Elizabeth May is the only member of a federal opposition party to have made the journey to the Conference of Parties in Lima, Peru, this week but the member of parliament for Saanich-Gulf Islands says she is glad to have made the trip. “It’s important that we have someone here to see what Canada is actually contributing to the process,” said May in an interview from Lima. “What we’re being told in Canada isn’t always what is happening in Lima.” She cites as an example a government press release dated December 9 announcing that the Federal Environment Minister, Leonna Aglukkaq, was hosting a discussion to “highlight the importance of incorporating traditional knowledge into environmental decision-making.” “What that press release didn’t say was that the ‘discussion’ wasn’t part of Elizabeth May the conference,” said May. “Nor was it open to delegates. It was a private affair, by invitation only, hosted at the Canadian Embassy.” May said that she was not invited to the ‘Canadian’ event. “Certainly as the only other Parliamentarian here, I should have been invited.,” May said.
