Jakubeit says now is time to walk the talk Steve Kidd

Penticton’s newly minted mayor says lakefront and downtown revitalization remain priorities for city hall in 2015.

With the majority of councillors and himself new to their roles, Mayor Andrew Jakubeit said it’s early to be setting out long-term goals for 2015.

He thinks this council came in on a very strong mandate. The community wanted to see change, they wanted to see some younger blood on council.

“I think council wants to get their feet a little bit more wet before they brand or expand any priorities to be our own,” said Jakubeit. “I think almost all of us platformed on some element of economic vibrancy and that is probably going to be our No. 1 collective priority.”

There have already been signs of that focus on council, with conditional support being given to Colleen Pennington’s $803,000 economic development budget, more than double the projected $304,000 for 2014.

“You can’t just talk about it, say it’s a good idea without investing in it. And if you want to get people who are working up north to have Penticton as their home base, you have to tell them somehow,” said Jakubeit.

Part of that money will go to hosting the GoMedia conference, which is coming to Penticton on Sept. 27.

“These are the movers and shakers in the tourism world. It’s actually a little stressful. If one of these writers does not have a positive experience, that’s all they write about,” said Jakubeit. “We want to wine, dine and wow them.”

Jakubeit said that Penticton needs to put on its Sunday best, and give visitors a realistic and authentic

experience of what the city and region has to offer.

“We have always had a reputation for lots of volunteers, lots of enthusiasm. We want that to resonate when, not just GoMedia, but all the festivals and events are going on,” he said.

Looking back at 2014, Jakubeit said the city’s economic investment zone program was an important factor. Though the zones have been in place for a few years, Jakubeit said they started to show results this year.

Mount Baldy to reopen Joe Fries

Skiers will be able to carve fresh tracks at Mount Baldy sometime in January, according to the head of the hill’s new operating company.

Baldy Capital Corporation announced Monday it has reached a deal to run the site this season while awaiting court approval to purchase the resort out of receivership.

“It’s a bit of a complicated process, but it’s quite typical,” said Fred Johnston, president of the Calgary-based corporation, which he described as “a small group of investors,” including himself.

Adult day passes will cost $29, while a season’s pass will be just $249.

Johnston said those prices are down “considerably” from when the resort last operated in 2013, partly because only one quad lift and magic carpet will be open, and also “to make sure that people who are not familiar with Baldy get an easy opportunity to

learn about it.”

The former Kelowna resident hopes to announce a firm January opening date soon.

“The thing we’re waiting on is confirmation of necessary insurance coverage.

Once we have that, we will announce a date,” explained Johnston, a project manager for private development firms.

“It would be closer to the start of the month, we hope.”

Previous resort manger Matt Koenig has signed on to run the hill’s day-to-day operations.

Assets of the former Mount Baldy Ski Corporation were put up for sale last summer after a creditor successfully sought a foreclosure order in B.C. Supreme Court to recover $4.4 million.

Vancouver-based G-Force Group was then appointed to market the assets, and on Dec. 19 was named receiver in order to strike the interim operating agreement with Baldy Capital Corporation.

Johnston expects it to take

three to four months for the court to approve the final purchase for “many millions of dollars.”

G-Force Group managing director Gary Powroznik said he came close in October to lining up a deal with another group that wasn’t able to secure financing to complete the transaction, but feels the arrangement with Johnston’s group is an even better match.

“I think there’s good chemistry here and a good resource base,” he said.

Powroznik added, though, that public support is crucial to ensure the resort’s longterm survival.

“You really need the community to come out, because I think it’s a real need for Oliver and Osoyoos,” he said.

The hill, with two chair lifts serving 30 runs, is located about 35 kilometres east of Oliver.

Assets included in the sale range from lift equipment to development lots and land tenure agreements with the B.C. government.

“They are starting to pay us some dividends. In terms of creating job opportunities or investment in our community, they are pivotal,” said Jakubeit, adding that the rules for the industrial economic development zones were modified in 2014 to provide added job incentives.

After the initial five-year tax hiatus on improvements, a company that provided full-time employment for 20 or more employees is now eligible for another five years.

“If you can show that you have

created more jobs, then we will give you further incentive. And of course, that is great for our local economy, to have a bunch of new, good paying jobs,” said Jakubeit.

Jakubeit said he also got a lot of compliments on the Lakeshore walkway. Though the bulk of the work was done in 2013, the project was completed in early 2014, with an official opening in July.

Though the makeover of the walkway along Okanagan Lake from the Peach to the SS Sicamous was a contentious issue at times, Jakubeit said everyone seems to approve of the result.

“It is getting a lot more use,” he said. “It is something the community is proud of and city hall should be proud that we were bold enough to push that through.”

Likewise, Jakubeit said downtown revitalization is having a positive effect.

“I am happy that downtown revite is still a priority. It’s moving along, we are starting to see more development downtown as well, not just beautification,” said Jakubeit, referring to the construction of Bad Tattoo Brewery and the relocation of the Cannery Brewing Company to the downtown.

“There is a new industry potentially starting to blossom with distilleries and craft breweries. That will help augment our burgeoning wine industry,” said Jakubeit, adding the renewed interest in the downtown area is a good sign.

“A lot of people gauge the downtown as the dipstick of a community’s vitality,” he said. “Development is an ongoing theme.”

Former pro hockey player puts criminal matters on ice Joe Fries

A former professional hockey player who hit rock bottom in Penticton should skate away from jail early in the new year after settling a handful of court matters.

Quinten Levi Van Horlick, 39, pleaded guilty to five counts of theft under $5,000 and a single count of breach of a court order and was sentenced Tuesday to 120 days in jail. The new time will run concurrent with a 147-day sentence he received in September for similar offences related to shoplifting at local stores last summer and fall.

“I went through a bad spell there. Not proud of myself,” Van Horlick told a provincial court judge in Penticton via video conference from the Kamloops Regional Correctional Centre.

Van Horlick admitted to stealing booze from the Government Street and Westminster liquor stores in August, and shoplifting at Whole Foods Market and The Bay in September, when he was also caught in the Real Canadian Superstore, contrary to a previous court order.

Court heard Van Horlick’s criminal record prior to Tuesday contained 18 convictions for theft and 10 for breaches, all

of which he accumulated after 2010.

“Here’s a guy that’s clean until he’s 35, and now he’s 39. What the heck?” asked Judge Gale Sinclair.

Defence counsel James Pennington said his client is addicted to alcohol and cocaine, plus served as an minor-pro hockey enforcer and likely suffered longterm damage as a result.

“He’s a good guy, but he’s punch drunk,” said Pennington, recalling what Van Horlick’s father told the lawyer about his son.

An online hockey statistics database shows Van Horlick, who was born in Kamloops, suited up for 12 minor-league teams over 10 seasons, before his career ended in 2004-05 with St. Georges CRS Express of the Quebec-based Ligue NordAmericaine de Hockey.

His best campaign was 2004-05, when he collected five points and 232 penalty minutes in 59 games with the Missouri River Otters of the United Hockey League.

“I didn’t play in the NHL, but I got as close as you can get. I used to be proud of myself,” Van Horlick said, adding he hopes to work on his family’s Pentictonarea farm and find a way back into hockey when he’s released from jail.

Roadblock turns up drugs, gun Joe Fries

Switching seats with his female passenger within view of an RCMP roadblock near Princeton has cost a man almost half a year of freedom.

Mounties watched Rene Michael Charles Cherot swap places with the woman in her Jeep at a Highway 3 rest stop on Nov. 2, 2014, court heard at the sentencing hearing Tuesday in provincial court in Penticton.

An officer walked over to the Jeep and soon spotted a can of bear spray inside, and a further search of the vehicle turned up a shotgun, one pound of marijuana and suspected cocaine and ecstasy.

Cherot, 38, pleaded guilty to operating a motor vehicle while disqualified, possession of a controlled substance and occupying a vehicle in which there is a firearm.

He was sentenced to a total of five months in jail, which will start in March when he finishes serving what had been a conditional sentence of house arrest for prior offences.

The lawyer added that Cherot’s female companion, who owned the vehicle in which they were travelling, did most of the driving but became ill, so Cherot took over not long before the roadblock west of Princeton, and tried to switch seats before the roadblock because his driver’s licence was suspended.

“We might all have done that, given his circumstances,” said Judge Gale SInclair with a grin.

Besides the jail term, the judge also handed Cherot a three-year driving ban and a five-year weapons prohibition.

Rare finds at bird count Steve Kidd Western News

A peregrine falcon is getting the spotlight in this year’s annual Christmas bird count, spotted in both Naramata and in downtown Penticton.

“Our counters in Naramata, Jim and Diedre Turnbull saw a peregrine falcon first thing in the morning, which is quite a rare bird in the count. We’ve only seen one a couple of times before,” said Dick Cannings, co-ordinator for the Canadian Christmas bird counts. The falcon was later spotted and photographed by another group in downtown Penticton.

Two other species, the European starling and the Bohemian waxwing, topped the list for sheer numbers, however.

“We had 11,000 starlings in that count, which is probably double what we normally get. A lot of those are on the Naramata Bench,” said Cannings.

Unlike the starlings, which were introduced to North America in the 19th century, the waxwing is a native species, which also travels in large flocks.

“They nest in the boreal forests of Western Canada. They are often one of the commonest birds on our count, we often get 2,000 to 3,000,” said Cannings. “This year we had over 7,000, which is the highest number we have ever had, and we have been doing this for over 50 years.”

On the down side, diving ducks seem to be disappearing from the area. Numbers of canvasbacks and redheads, two prized hunting duck species, have seen substantial drop in numbers.

“Redheads were declining through the 50s, 60s and 70s, but seemed to be coming back up,” said Cannings. “Our numbers seem to be going down. We used to have 3,000 redheads down

here in the southern end of the lake every winter and this year we only had about 500 off Three Mile Beach.”

And canvasbacks have dropped to zero, where normally 50 to 100 were spotted.

“We have missed them in two of the last four years and only had two and three in the others,” said Cannings. “The other species that associate with them, the ring-necked duck, we have missed for the last three years in a row.”

The Christmas bird count was started as a social and sporting event, and still is to a large degree, though it has also grown into an important record of North American bird populations.

“It’s done in over 2,000 locations across North America, so that when people like me wonder what is happening to these ducks, I can look at the overall results and see if they are declining everywhere,” said Cannings.

A century ago, the tradition was to go out on Christmas Day and do what was called a side hunt. Men would meet, break up into teams, and, in Chapman’s words, “hie them to the fields and woods on the cheerful mission of killing practically everything in fur or feathers that crossed their path — if they could.”

By 1900, the practice was dying out, and Chapman wanted to speed up the process, proposing counting birds on Christmas Day rather than killing them.

“I think there were 25 counts that year. And now there is over 2,000. It has been growing steadily, especially in the last 20 years,” said Cannings. “When I took over the co-ordination of Canadian counts, about 15 years ago, we had 250 counts and now we are at 450. It’s really gaining in popularity still.”

College looking for WiFi partner Joe Fries

Providing quality, uniform wireless Internet service at four campuses and other satellite sites has proven difficult for Okanagan College, which is looking for a partner to help address the issue.

Besides the fact it operates over a large geographical area, the college’s buildings also present challenges for WiFi, according to director of information technology Laura Eagen.

“It’s hundreds of little, concrete rooms, basically, so it is a difficult environment,” she said.

The college earlier this month issued a request for expressions of interest from groups that might be able to tackle the problem at minimal cost to the institution.

Eagen said deficiencies in the school’s WiFi service, such as holes in its coverage areas and a requirement to log in and out when changing locations, were highlighted in results from a recent student engagement survey.

The system already in place, she added, has been tweaked, but “it really wasn’t designed for teaching and learning, or to meet the demands of multiple de-

vices and expectations around levels of service.”

What she envisions is a service similar to Shaw Go WiFi, which gives Shaw customers free Internet service in thousands of public areas, including much of downtown Penticton, after logging in once.

Eagen stressed, however, that Okanagan College isn’t looking to give one company a monopoly or free access to its staff and students’ eyeballs.

“We certainly aren’t in a situation where we want anybody going out advertising to students or anything like that, but if there was some kind of complementary service that we could get into from an investment perspective, we’d be interested in having that discussion,” she said.

There isn’t a lot of money available for the project, however.

In March 2014, the college’s board of governors approved tuition fee increases and staff layoffs to close a $3.2-million budget gap, so Eagen said if WiFi improvements can’t be done cheaply, they’ll instead be done slowly.

“If it comes down to not having available budget and not being able to find anyone to kind of partner with us, we’ll just make incremental change and keep hacking away at it,” she said.

Take special care on the roads It’s a familiar refrain this time of year.

No, not the holiday wishes. Rather, the plea to motorists and pedestrians to take special care while they’re on the streets.

You may be rushing off to that special holiday party, but how are you getting back?

Local police detachments have already geared up for the CounterAttack program to combat impaired drivers, but it isn’t always drunk drivers that are involved in accidents.

Every December in B.C., an average of seven pedestrians are killed and another 269 are injured.

The dark rainy weather, slippery streets and poor visibility all conspire to make driving more difficult.

There’s little we can do about that. But what we can do is make the extra effort to see and be seen.

ICBC has a few suggestions. They’re made every year, but they’re worth repeating.

To motorists, remain attentive at all times.

Not only is it illegal to use a hand-held device while driving, the consequences can be deadly.

Pay particular attention around intersections where 75 per cent of all pedestrian incidents occur. Watch while turning left or right for pedestrians who have already begun to cross.

For pedestrians, never assume that just because you see the vehicles, their drivers see you. Headlights, traffic and other distractions compete with your visibility. Fight back by ensuring you are dressed to be seen; wear PENTICTON WESTERN refl ective clothing, a reflective arm band, or carry a light.

The holidays are a hectic time of year.

We all have places to be and things to think about.

But they’re also meant to be a happy time; don’t let an accident or injury spoil that.

Climate talks end 2014 in disarray

In case you missed the outcome of the latest United Nations climate change conference in Lima, Peru, it was another costly, embarrassing failure.

This one is likely to be remembered mostly for a staggeringly stupid stunt by Greenpeace employees, who were threatened with prosecution for defacing the Nazca Lines, a world heritage site in the Peruvian desert.

These vast 1,500-year-old petroglyphs, visible from space, are among the great mysteries of archaeology. “Time for a change!” blared huge yellow letters dragged across the sacred site by paid protesters trampling the delicate terrain. I’ll say it’s time for a change, starting with scratching Greenpeace off your Christmas card list.

Earlier there was the spectacle of Canada’s national media, reflexively denouncing Ottawa’s supposed inaction on greenhouse

gases after U.S. President Barack Obama unveiled a surprise climate agreement with China in advance of Peru.

“Over to you, Mr. Prime Minister,” chirped CBC anchor Wendy Mesley, joining other TV networks in falsely portraying the U.S. deal as a breakthrough.

This non-binding gesture soon produced many cartoons, one of which shows Obama stripped to his underwear in a poker game with Chinese President Xi Jinping, who is surrounded by a pile of chips and an American flag.

The U.S.-China announcement served as a preview of Peru, where developing countries would again refuse any substantive restrictions on their fuel use. China graciously agreed to continue ramping up its world-leading greenhouse gas emissions until 2030, while lameduck Obama pretended he could commit the U.S. to further reductions.

B.C. Views Between them, the U.S. and China account for about half of global human-caused carbon emissions. Due mostly to the surge from China and India, Canada’s share has fallen from two per cent to 1.5, which should help put all those “tar sands” protests into perspective.

Days later, Environment Canada released its latest national emission statistics, an event ignored by most media.

“Between 2005 and 2012, total Canadian GHG emissions decreased by 5.1 per cent, while the economy grew

by 10.6 per cent over the same period,” the report states.

B.C. Environment Minister Mary Polak joined the throngs who jetted to Lima.

There she met officials from California and other U.S. states to reannounce their modest efforts to put a price on carbon emissions. TV anchors and other wideeyed innocents might have been left with the mistaken impression that the huge U.S. petroleum industry is cutting back, when in fact it has grown enormously thanks to shale oil and gas production.

And California continues to produce, by its own state government measure, the most carbon-intensive heavy crude in North America.

Overshadowing all of this is the drop in the world price of oil, mainly the result of Saudi Arabia flooding the market in an effort to push competitors out of business. In the latest sign of the U.S. public’s lack of interest in reduc-

ing emissions, sales of larger vehicles immediately spiked up as gasoline prices fell.

I’m still receiving criticism for a recent column in which I declared myself an “agnostic” on human-caused global warming. Agnostic means searcher, and my search has continued for real signs of climate change and its potential causes.

Our glaciers are receding, no question, but the current trend started around the 1850s, when a sport utility vehicle had one horsepower in leather harness and B.C. was about to be declared a British colony.

But amid the noise, there is serious evidence being put forward that our province is undergoing a climate shift with major consequences.

And there are calls for action.

I’ll discuss that next week.

Proof Site C not needed This summer, I took the initiative and installed 24 solar panels on my property. The panels worked on overcast days, when the sun wasn’t shining, producing more power than our two-family, seven-freezer home could use, and sent the extra power back to the grid.

I was surprised that the solar panels work on light; as long as there’s daylight, my panels are producing solar power.

Since installing my panels, my hydro bills have been slashed by more than 50 per cent. I expect even greater savings because my hydro supplier, FortisBC, recently installed a smart meter that measures how much excess power I send back to the grid and will credit future bills.

I figure I am paying three to four cents per kilowatt hour on solar. Fortis charges nine to 13 cents per kilowatt hour. What will be the cost per kilowatt hour in 10 years, if and when the Site C dam is built?

A new solar panel has already been developed and is entering the manufacturing stage that will substantially lower the cost of solar by reducing the amount of silicon needed in the panels. Another new solar panel is being developed that has a battery system embedded in each panel. The batteries charge during the day, when the solar panels are powering your house, and then the batteries power your house at night.

This is cutting edge technology that no hydro dam, no coal, no oil and no gas can price match. Once solar panels are paid for (I estimate mine will be fully paid for in

about seven years), your solar power is free.

Consider Germany, a nation of 81 million people, which has 500,000 homes producing solar power. One third of their power needs come from solar. The projected Site C dam would supply power for 450,000 homes, but would also put hundreds of kilometers of beautiful river valley under water.

Construction of the dam also requires the relocation of roads and the building of homes for well over 1,000 workers, all of which the consumer must pay for in higher hydro prices. How much will the power cost: 15 cents, 20 cents, 30 cents a kilowatt hour? They don’t tell us. It’s just corporations making money at consumers’ expense.

China and India, which comprise 35 per cent of the world’s population, are on the fast track to developing the solar industry. China already has the second largest amount of solar capacity and will double its gigawatt output by 2020.

China is also the largest producer of solar panels in the world, selling the panels worldwide. India is beginning a massive program that will see hundreds of millions of homes, businesses and manufacturing plants powered by free solar.

In the U.S., solar is being embraced in a big way. Plans are to train 50,000 solar installers to add to the 30,000 installers and 1,000 instructors who are already trained.

You have to ask yourself, what energy source is solar power replacing around the world? Is it coal, gas or oil?

All of these are produced in Canada.

Our future markets for coal, gas and oil will only shrink, simply because solar power is clean and free, once the solar panels have been paid for. No other source of energy on the planet can compete with it, be it hydro dams, coal, oil, gas or wind farms. Corporations are hush about solar power because they know if it becomes widespread, they can’t compete with owner-produced energy.

We should be embarking on a future powered by solar here in B.C. and Canada.

Lots of immediate, sustainable jobs could be created in a solar industry. For less than the price of a new car, I created a “solar plant” on my property that pays me every day and will produce clean, cheap energy for the rest of my life.

Do we need a Site C dam that will cost $8 billion to build and force hydro companies to charge a lot more for power to recoup their investment and make a profit?

No! What we need is for the Province of B.C. to embrace solar energy and promote it aggressively and widely.

Make it a part of all public buildings; lower or remove the PST on solar panels; encourage the production of solar panels in B.C. as a new industry; provide incentives for installation of solar panels by businesses and homeowners.

This could lead to a new era of plentiful, clean energy in our Province and save our northeast for agricultural use to provide food for us now, and in the future.

Why were the electric cars that GM developed years ago only leased and when their success was established, were pulled from the market and crushed. One tends to believe that the power elite of this world deliberately forces us to use technologies that are a detriment to the well-being of our planet, because it serves their greed for money that they extort from the rest of us and make us into dependent slaves.

With such torture, you will always get the desired results, if the answer is true or not does not matter much as long as the answer fits the imaginary grand picture of those behind the scene.

How a nation with such a record can preach human rights to other nations, is beyond my imagination.

A big shout and kudos to the people whom paid it forward to my daughter and I for the gifts and bicycle for my daughter for Christmas.

Forcing technology for money

Big government has done it again. This approved mega project, costing nine billion dollars to B.C. residents will negatively impact on the environment as it takes another big chunk of good, arable land out of production.

The argument that the dam will provide us with a renewable resource smells of incompetence and lacks the will to explore alternate power sources. I had a friend here in Penticton, who 10 years ago had developed a machine that converted magnetic power into electric power – free and unlimited.

He tried to patent the invention and get it manufactured, but all he received is empty promises and an attempt by the big players in the energy world to trick him into surrendering his invention so that they could mothball it and prevent the public from benefiting from it. My friend was not alone in this field and he had contact with others who were developing similar technology, some of which had “accidents” when they

Torture is an old tactic

To me, stealing organs (Re: letter Informative and shocking, Western News, Dec. 17), is no shocking news anymore. One only has to type into the search engine, “Illegal organ trade” and the search result may shock everyone. One does not have to go all the way to China to find out about that.

Looking to Kosovo, Israel and even the USA will do. Collecting organs legally and selling them illegal is common practice.

Just a few years ago, the police arrested 44 People in New Jersey. I originally wanted to write about the “torture report” enhanced interrogation. The report on torture of detainees forgot to mention, or better blacked out, the real torture, which probably includes the organs as well.

It is common practice by certain people, to torture prisoners until they sign a prewritten statement, just to stop the torture.

It is now well known by historians, that the prisoners of Nuremberg signed their own death sentence, just to make the torture stop.

Idea is off the rails

Surely I am not the only one to think that ripping out the Kelowna and beyond train tracks for scrap price to make a walking trail is a terribly short-sighted idea.

I see no reason why a trail and the tracks could not exist to serve the athletic, the less mobile and tourists alike. Yes, it would require the co-operation of the different governing bodies and volunteers of all stripes.

People love trains, take note of the often sold out traffic on the short KVR ride in Summerland.

I see opportunities for the wine industry to become involved in such a project like the dinner and wine train in Napa. As a past member of the B.C. Railway society I know that people will travel long distances to ride trains. Count me as one.

Were such an idea come to fruition, a huge powerful locomotive would not be needed for this almost level track. Our country is littered by unused rolling stock easy to convert to the type of daily summer run I envisage.

I urge all involved with the purchase of this track to look to the future. Consider not destroying the asset, but instead have vision for the future and build upon it.

As the clock ticks down on 2014 there will be plenty of places to count down to midnight. Whether you are taking in a dinner with some dancing, or indulging in some holiday spirits, there’s sure to be a party for you as we ring in a new year.

A cash drop from the roof, taking in the fireworks at the Lakeside or heading up to the mountains are all options available around Penticton as we enter 2015.

Mule Nightclub The 3rd Annual Make It Rain New Year’s Eve Bash will feature champagne, complimentary party favours and a surprise special guest DJ. As the night comes to a close the Mule will literally make it rain cash with $1,000 being dropped from the ceiling at the stroke of midnight.

The Copper Mug Pub The Copper Mug Pub will be serving up dinner and opening up the dance floor for the rest of the year on Dec. 31. Tickets are $20 and available at the Copper Mug. A ticket gets you party favours and your choice of a prime rib, stuffed chicken or seafood pasta dinner.

Music will be provided by Hard Hitting Games.

Firehall Brewery Five-piece band the Great White North will help bring 2014 to a close with the folk-rock stylings of Michael Szalay, Sid Ruhland, Sean Petersen, Polo Veintimilla and Carson Ruhland. The band will cover songs spanning from the 50s to today including everything from classic tunes from Neil Young and Elvis Presley to Kings of Leon and the Black Keys.

The celebration takes place at the Pappa’s Firehall Bistro, which is under new ownership, on Main Street in Oliver.

Tickets are $15 each, or two for $25, and are available at the Firehall Bistro. Tickets include champagne and the Firehall Brewery draught will be on special with a special release cask being tapped for one night only.

Penticton Lakeside Resort Take in the fireworks display in the Grand Ballroom at the Penticton Lakeside Resort with a dinner buffet, music by DJ Russ, a champagne toast and party favours.

Recipes to kick off the new year

Here are a couple of our favourite recipes for

the new year.

Cassandra’s recipe: Blue Cheese and Pecan Stuffed Dates Wrapped in Prosciutto.

Makes 20, takes 30 minutes-ish.

• 20 pitted Medjool dates • 10 slices Prosciutto cut in half lengthwise • 4 oz. crumbled Blue Cheese (we suggest Upper Bench King Cole Blue) • 10 pecans halved • 1/3 cup Balsamic

Vinegar • 3 tablespoons Honey • Toothpicks Directions: Program your oven to hit 375 degrees.

Cut dates lengthwise to the pit — don’t go all the way through and remove pit. Stuff with a small chunk of the blue cheese and half a pecan.

Wrap Prosciutto around the date and secure with a toothpick. Line a baking sheet with foil or parchment to catch drips as this gets messy.

Place an oven-safe wire rack atop baking sheet and place dates on rack to bake for 20 minutes.

While baking dates, reduce balsamic vinegar and honey by 75 per cent (leaving 25 per cent) and then drizzle over dates once arranged on a platter. Can make all ahead and bake whenever you need to as guests arrive.

Crostini

Crostini is so easy and versatile. Toast some baguette rounds and then top with delicious combinations like this fig tapenade with Carmelis Goat Cheese.

Ingredients: • 1 cup chopped, stemmed dried figs

OYSTERS Motoyaki will make a great New Year’s treat.

• 1/3 cup chopped pitted kalamata olives • 1 tbsp balsamic vinegar • 1 tbsp drained chopped capers • 1.5 tsp. chopped fresh thyme • 1/4 cup chopped toasted walnuts or pine nuts If the figs are hard, steep them in boiling water for an hour until soft. Mix all ingredients together in a bowl (can be kept in fridge for a few days).

Oysters and bubbly always scream celebration – so head to your local fish shop and grab some oysters to make this delicious dish. Pair with a bottle of any of

our local sparkling wine.

Oysters Motoyaki This delicious recipe comes straight from the sea from my friend, Brent “The Oysterman” Petkau, an Oyster Farmer on Cortes Island.

Serves 12 — 1 oyster per person Prep time: 20 minutes. Cooking time: 10 minutes Ingredients: • 12 medium to large Oysters, rinsed and scrubbed • 1 cup Mayonnaise • 1/4 cup Green onion or chives, finely chopped • 1 Tablespoon Shiro or Light Miso (Nature’s Fare will have these) • 1 Tablespoon of Chili Garlic Sauce (Sam-

bal Oelek) • Juice from 1 lemon Directions: Shuck the oysters and lay out on a baking dish. You can use either the top shell or rock salt as a stabilizer. Make sure to keep as much of the oyster liquor in the oyster shell. Heat oven to 400 degrees Farenheit. Mix together the mayonnaise, miso paste, chives, chili sauce and lemon juice.

Slather each oyster with approx two tsp of miso-mayo mixture per oyster. Bake for 5 to 6 minutes. Serve immediately with wedge of lime or lemon.

Exploring Sweetland

People often ask me for book suggestions, but I usually find that only a few titles stick with me over the year. One of those, and one of the best reads of 2014, is Sweetland

by Newfoundland author, Michael Crummey. From the first sentence, I knew I was going to love the story and the experience of reading it.

Sweetland opens with fisherman, Moses Sweetland, navigating through dense fog when he happens upon a drifting boat of half-frozen refugees. He tows them to the shore of his remote Newfoundland island,

also called Sweetland, named after his Swedish ancestors.

Time skips forward from that fateful day when Moses rescued the Sri Lankans. The lighthouse he tended has been automated, and the fish stocks devastated. There is nothing much on the island for the remaining aging residents, but still, it’s their home and their community.

When a government man takes the ferry in to offer those remaining island residents a resettlement package, it brings sorrow and strife.

They all agree to move — except for Moses Sweetland. The problem is that no residents get money for the move unless they all agree to go.

Sweetland is an amazing exploration of the concept of relocation. It looks at it from all angles and points of view. From the rough necks working in Fort McMurray, who fly back to jump at the unexpected windfall, to an aging rancher who is broken by the decision to leave.

Although set in a remote Newfoundland outpost, Sweetland made me consider all kinds of relocations — from the closing of a neighbourhood school to a community transfer such as Davis Inlet — and the lasting effects on those who are forced to go.

It’s not always a wrong choice to pick up and move a community. It’s just that it’s never simple. Breaking apart the soul of the community and turning neighbours into strangers can have ramifications that last for generations.

Sweetland is stuffed with beautifully humorous language and wonderfully odd characters – a barbershop owner who has never cut one head of hair, and an old woman who hasn’t left her house since she was a child, except to smoke and pretend to read books while sitting on her front stoop.

Moses Sweetland doesn’t want to abandon everything he has built up on this island because, as an old man, it makes it too difficult to answer the questions: “Did my life have meaning? And what has any of it meant?” I hated to reach the last pages of the book – feeling complicit in leaving Moses Sweetland behind, closing the cover on his island and relegating it to the past.

It’s no wonder this darkly comic novel was on this year’s short list for a Governor General’s award for literature.

• 2 ounces (40ml) Aperol • 3 to 4 ounces (60ml-90ml) Prosecco or any local sparkling wine (I recommend local 8th Generation Frizzante) • Sparkling water • Orange slice Directions: Fill glass generously with ice cubes.

Pour in Aperol then add Prosecco.

Add a splash of sparkling water and a slice of orange. Cheers!

Local writer and social media maven Alison Markin on what she likes to drink on New Years Eve: “Honestly, my favourite NYE “dish” is a shot of good Russian vodka, followed by a chaser of the following: a tiny sliver of lemon (with rind), with a tiny bite of hard cheese (like a strong white cheddar), wrapped in a piece of butter lettuce.

Wrapped tight like a little bite-sized package. It’s a Siberian thing and is the BEST way to enhance cold vodka. And also, I

Pulse mixture until blended and walnuts are still a bit chunky.

Place in a bowl or spread in a small platter and serve with veggies or pita chips.

This can also be used as a sauce for BBQ kabobs or tofu.

Two make Small Business B.C. Awards cut Steve Kidd

Two of the five Penticton businesses nominated for this year’s small business awards have made it to the second round.

Topping the public voting portion of the Small Business B.C. Awards were SOCoun-

try Radio, nominated in the People’s Choice category, and White Kennedy LLP, nominated for Best Workplace.

Both received enough votes to make it into the Top 10 semi-finalists in their category.

White Kennedy LLP, an Okanagan accounting firm, strives to provide a supportive environ-

ment for its employees on many levels including education, community involvement, staff training, social events, fundraiser matching, mentoring and promoting from within.

SOCountry was started by Dennis Walker as an Internet streaming radio station two years ago. Walker said it’s

because of his listeners that he made it this far in the competition, describing their comments on the Small Business B.C. awards website as “heartfelt.”

“I have worked very hard, so that feels good.

Any shortfalls I have, business-wise, I have tried to make up for with added effort,” said

Walker. “I am just looking at it as hard work that will pay off down the road, and that’s whether I win this award or not.”

Both businesses now move forward to face a panel of judges, who will review their applications, and based on the award criteria, narrow down the competi-

tion to the Top 5 finalists in each category. Those will be announced Jan. 30, 2015, and invited to give a Dragons’ Denstyle pitch in front of a panel of judges on why they should be named the best in B.C. Winners will be announced at a gala dinner in February.

Crossfit Penticton was also nominated

for People’s Choice, along with Burger 55 and Karoleena Inc, in the Best Company category. Burger 55 made it through to the final round last year in the same category.

The Penticton Vees’ newest defenceman got in touch with his former teammates Connor Chartier and Dakota Conroy, asking them to put in a good word with coachgeneral manager Fred Harbinson.

Prior to joining the Vees in mid-December, Gwinner had played a couple of junior B games with the Three Hills Thrashers in the Heritage Junior Hockey League.

“I just kind of wasn’t into hockey, then realized I made a big mistake,” said Gwinner. “Freddy gave me this opportunity to get out here. I’m just planning on making the most of it.”

With three points in five games, the Drumheller, Alta. product is showing he can put up points and brings physicality, and is not afraid to stand up for teammates. In his second game against the Chilliwack Chiefs, he fought Eric Roberts. With fighting being a part of his game, Gwinner said he feels that’s a reason Harbinson added him.

“There is not too many fighters on the team to begin with,” said Gwinner, adding he likes to contribute in any way.

“He’s been great,” said Harbinson, who added the defenceman to fill in a gap when Dante Fabbro and Gabe Bast played for Canada West in the World Junior A Challenge Dec. 14-20 in Kindersley, Sask. “For someone to come in mid-season while everyone is in mid-season form and he only played a couple of junior B games, I thought he has fit in real well.”

“It’s awesome,” said Gwinner of the chance to play in the BCHL. “Compared to junior A in Alberta, I find it a little more skilled here. That’s my style of game.”

To add Gwinner, 20, the Vees placed injured forward Matt Serratore on injured reserve.

Penticton Speedway’s biggest weekend is getting bigger.

The Gordie Mannes Memorial Invitational weekend in August will be part of the Tri-City Race Series, which includes drivers from Quesnel, Williams Lake and Prince George. Penticton partners up with a series that reignited two years ago with the rise of the sport.

“It’s going to be a huge weekend for us,” said Penticton Speedway owner Johnny Aantjes, adding spectators can enjoy a late model invitational, hit-topass and Eve of Destruction over two days.

What led to this was the support the series received from South Okanagan drivers, who Aantjes said performed well. A press release stated that Tri-City officials got together and decided that they needed to thanks southern drivers in a special way. Tri-City Race Series vice-president Bill Klugh Jr. mentioned that the series should show

What people witnessed was Jordan Kober, new to the national team, place fifth on Saturday then claiming silver on Sunday. Kober’s brother Joshua placed 14th on Saturday, while Noah Spence was 15th and Kyle Parker was 16th. On Sunday, along with Kober, Koleton Phipps finished 12th on Sunday and Parker was 13th. On the women’s side, Mason Barzilay was the lone athlete to crack the final round finishing 10th.

“They were awesome,” laughed Kuroda. “That’s all I can say. They were totally awesome. Not only was it great for them, but it was great for the team.”

Kurodo said Phipps and Parker did really well and praised Barzilay’s performance.

“It’s only going to boost their egos,

boost their self confidence,” said Kuroda, of all the athletes, adding that those who compete with the club in the Timber Tour have “a lot more will to do well.”

“They are up against the best in Canada,” said Kuroda. “For them to pull off the placings that they did is just unbelievable.”

Canada’s Luke Ulsifer took gold on Saturday, with teammate Laurent Dumais taking silver and bronze going to Brenden Kelly. On Sunday, Ulsifer repeated his gold performance with Kober taking silver and bronze for Dumais.

On the women’s side, taking gold was Valerie Gilbert of Quebec with Ontario’s Aimee Hewat taking silver and bronze went to Berkley Brown on Saturday. On Sunday, Gilbert repeated her golden performance with Julie Bergeron of Canada taking silver and teammate Myriam Leclerc taking bronze. AFC was also represented

Senior boys basketball was not friendly to Kohl Linder last year.

The Princess Margaret Mustang, not in Grade 12, discovered he needed to bulk up his six-foot-five frame.

“I was getting pushed around a little bit by the bigger Grade 12s,” said Linder, who knocked in 13 points, including a bucket from long distance range, while grabbing eight boards, to help the Mustangs thrash the George Elliot Coyotes 86-46 on Dec. 17 and improve to 2-0 in Okanagan AA league play.

Entering his final year of high school basketball, Linder wants to use his size to his advantage. Early signs point to that not being a problem as the Coyotes couldn’t contain him in the key.

Mustangs co-coach Andrew Sexton has seen the improvement. He said the added strength has helped Linder attack the basket more. He’s also more confident offensively after struggling in that area last season. Along with being able to work in the tough areas under the basket for points, Linder is showing a touch from three-point range.

“Last year he didn’t take any,” said Sexton. “His shooting has gotten better. He is not forcing shots like he was last year.”

Linder is also playing a smarter game, which Sexton attributes to him playing during the spring.

“It has definitely improved his game,” said Sexton.

All the effort is for one reason: He wants to play at the university level.

“Sports is a really important part of my life,” said Linder, who wants to be a leader for the Mustangs and help them reach provincials while getting noticed by universities.

Linder feels he has been shooting better, making free throws, while playing a cleaner game.

He gets inspiration from NBA star Kobe Bryant and former Mustangs teammate Jas Sahota, who played a smart, skilled game.

“I have always liked Kobe Bryant because he puts in

the work,” said Linder, who collected 14 points in a 62-55 win over the Summerland Rockets Dec. 10.

Sherwood Trophies Vees Express steamrolls into break get edged in overtime Western News Staff

The KVR Express Grade 8 boys basketball team is off to a hot start with a 15-4 record (3-0 in league and 12-4 in tournaments) good for first. The Express earned a 45-23 win over Skaha Lake, a 51-32 victory versus Osoyoos and a 58-19 win against McNicoll Park.

It’s the first time in six years that the Express has been undefeated after three games.

The Penticton Sherwood Trophies peewee AAA Vees settled for second in a West Kelowna tournament after losing 2-1 to North Delta in overtime.

It was a rematch of the Vees’ final round robin game, as the two teams battled to a 5-5 draw. North Delta buried the winner at the three minute mark.

The Vees opened the tournament with a 5-2 win over Kelowna.

Ben LeFranc and Kai Espenhain each scored twice. In their second game, the Vees blanked Prince George 4-0 on goals from Espenhain, Sam Togyi, Marty Aantjes and Finn Halladay.

In the semifinal, the Vees defeated the hosts 4-1 to advance to the final.

Scorers were LeFranc with two, Levi Carter and Brennan Nelson.

Defensively, the Express are led by Austin Afonso and Jacob Oh. Afonso averages about seven steals a game and Oh has such good defensive technique that he is hard to get around.

Following the Christmas break, the Express travels to Vernon for a competitive tournament then hosts one.

They will also play in the Penticton Middle School Championship.

“This group has all the tools to be very successful,” said Haddrell. “They have the desire to be good and the work ethic to match.”

Née: Margaret Eldora Alexandra Orr Tim Hortons lost a loyal customer on December 7, 2014. Peggy passed peacefully in her home at The Concorde Assisted Living in Penticton.

Her husband Jack predeceased her in 1982 and she is survived by sons Dean of Penticton and Lowell (Karen) of Tucson, AZ. Grandsons Waylon and Harley Thomas live in North Vancouver while grand-daughter Christa Moser and great-grandkids Tyler Spray and Jayden Nichol are from Saanichton.

Peggy was born in Hanna, Alberta in 1927 and followed her parents to British Columbia. After Business School, she was working in Prince George as the first-known female lumber buyer when she met her future husband, Jack Thomas of Smithers Planer. Jack, recognizing a charming woman who could also be an asset to his business, charmed her with a first date which ended up at a romantic view point under the stars. Peggy later learned that the viewpoint was a sanitary land fill, but the romance took hold.

Simultaneously starting their own family and both working to build the family business, Jack and Peggy’s time in Smithers was surrounded by their parents, brothers, a sister, in-laws and the many associated children, all within a few short blocks.

After a short stint in the lower mainland of British Columbia, Jack and Peggy bought a vineyard and settled in Penticton in 1968 for the long haul. She became comptroller for Casabello Wines for many years. Some might say that she was a connoisseur of the fine wines of that era. The family denies all reports of inventory leakage during Peggy’s tenure.

Peggy’s house was always full of the neighborhoods juvenile delinquents and some of which called her Peggy and many which called her Mom. Simply put, Peggy loved and cared for just about everybody who came in contact with her and, in mostly every case, that love was returned to her until her final day. If Peggy had a message for those that remain, it would be, “I have been blessed”.

Special thanks to the staff and management of The Concorde, Dr. Killian and Dr. Clouatre, Interior Health and the wonderful staff of Penticton Regional Hospital. You succeeded in giving us all our greatest gift, more time with Peggy!
