Stabbing murder charges stayed Jimi Sandhu was accused of January 2014 slaying Vikki HOPES Abbotsford News

Charges have been stayed against the man accused of killing Red Scorpions gangster Matt Campbell one year ago. Jimi Sandhu, 25, of Abbotsford was charged on Jan. 31, 2014, with second-degree murder in the death of Campbell, 31, who had staggered into a business at the Fraser Valley Auto Mall four weeks earlier, on Jan. 2. Campbell was bleeding profusely from his

neck and was taken to hospital, where he died. Police later confirmed that he had been stabbed. Jury selection for Sandhu’s trial had been slated to begin this Thursday. Provincial Crown spokesman Neil MacKenzie said the Crown was unable to continue its prosecution of Sandhu and directed a stay of proceedings last Thursday (Jan. 29). “All that the (criminal justice branch) can say at this time is that on the currently available evidence, the Crown has concluded that there is no substantial likelihood of conviction,”

MacKenzie said. No details of what led up to the attack, including the motive, have been released by police. Campbell was a close friend of the Bacon brothers – who were also members of the Red Scorpions gang. He was among 10 people charged in 2006 after police broke up a gun-trafficking ring that sold handguns, rifles and machine guns to drug dealers across the country. Police seized more than 100 guns during a series of raids, and approximately one-third of Continued on A4

Baird has been outspoken both about the need to take a hardline stance on Russia regarding that country’s support for rebels in Ukraine, and on the need to confront the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria. A bus connecting Abbotsford, Chilliwack and Langley will launch on April 6. The Fraser Valley Express will make stops in Chilliwack at the Lickman Park and Ride, Vedder Road and Luckakuck Way, and downtown Chilliwack. In Abbotsford, the bus will stop at the McCallum park and ride and Highstreet Shopping Centre, and in Langley at Carvolth Exchange. Barclay Pitkethly, director of regional programs at the Fraser Valley Regional District (FVRD), spoke to council on Monday about the plans for the new bus. On weekdays, there will be 17 round trips, with the first westbound trip starting at 5:15 a.m. and the last eastbound trip at 9:05 p.m. On Saturdays, there will be four round trips, with the first westbound trip at 9 a.m. and the last eastbound trip at 6:30 p.m. Pitkethly said that as the population grows, people want access to regional facilities such as Abbotsford Regional Hospital, or the Abbotsford courthouses. The schedule is also hoped to target commuters between the cities, he said. The success of a shuttle bus between University of the Fraser Valley campuses shows a demand for the service, said Pitkethly. Originally, they did not plan to have a stop at Highstreet Shopping Centre “due to the fairly complex configuration of the road system there,” but there was a high demand from those who were surveyed about the project, he said. As the service continues, they will consider other stops, such as at Whatcom Road. The rate will be set at $5 for a ticket and free for people eight years and under. A book of 10 tickets will cost $45, and an adult monthly pass will be $100 and a student/senior monthly pass will cost $85. Abbotsford and Chilliwack will each pay for part of the service, with Abbotsford’s projected cost at $411,897 and Chilliwack’s at $233,709. BC Transit will contribute $704,813. Mayor Henry Braun said that when the proposal came to council last year, he voted against it – not because he didn’t like the service, but because Langley wasn’t paying into the program. He encouraged the FVRD to continue to encourage Langley to contribute to the cost. Pitkethly said the Township of Langley has expressed interest in the bus servicing areas such as Trinity Western University, and there is opportunity for those discussions in the future.

them were located in Abbotsford. Campbell, who was described as a “facilitator” in the ring, was sentenced in January 2008 to two years in prison. He allegedly took over leadership of the Red Scorpions following the arrest of two of the three Bacon brothers – Jarrod and Jamie – and the murder of the third brother, Jonathan. Jarrod is currently is prison serving a 14-year sentence for conspiracy to traffic cocaine, and Jamie is in prison awaiting trial for his alleged role in the Surrey Six slayings. Jonathan was killed in a targeted shooting outside a Kelowna hotel and casino in August 2011. Sandhu has several prior charges, but most have resulted in acquittals or stays. He faced weapon and assault charges after a person was shot in the wrist in January 2009 following a dispute at a home on Newcastle Drive, but those charges were later stayed. In March of that year, he was convicted of theft and was sentenced to seven days in jail. The following month, he went to trial on three charges of possession for the purpose of trafficking, but he was acquitted on all counts. In July 2009, he was again acquitted at trial – this time for possession of stolen property. In January 2011, Sandhu was among four people charged with a home invasion and abduction that involved two men being abducted from Homestead Crescent and then driven to a home on McCallum Road. There, the mother of one of the abducted men was taken from the home, and all three captives were later released on Highway 1 near Clearbrook Road. Charges against all four accused were quickly stayed due to a lack of evidence. However, in May 2012, Sandhu was found guilty of assault with a weapon, possession of a prohibited weapon and breaching his conditions. He received 31 days in jail followed by two years’ probation.

More heat on hospital parking fees Mayor says city can’t force Fraser Health to make parking free

‘The city has no jurisdiction with any bylaw prohibiting pay parking,’ said Mayor Braun. tion with any bylaw prohibiting pay parking,” Braun said. Mission Memorial Hospital’s free parking stems from a memorandum of understanding signed between the district and Fraser Health following the redevelopment of the hospital. The agreement runs until 2018. Braun said he empathizes with emergency room patients. He recalled his one ER visit, for a hamstring injury: “My first thought was ‘Man, I don’t have time to go pay because my leg is killing me.’” Braun said that while the city may have been able to

make a case for free parking during negotiations for the hospital’s redevelopment, that time has likely passed. “If citizens are concerned about this, they should be discussing this with their MLAs and Fraser Health.” About a third of the $8 million Fraser earns from pay parking goes to maintain the lots and the rest flows into the authority’s budget for patient care. “Personally, I wish it could be consistent,” Fraser Health board chair Karen Matty told Black Press. “But we do not write bylaws in the various

Abbotsford investigate for itself whether a program would be effective. Council voted to bring a bylaw forward with restrictions similar to one in Langley, which was passed in 2013. It ensures blueberry farmers pay $125 per year for a cannon licence and post a notice on their property. It also regulates how often cannons can fire – one shot every five minutes for a single cannon and no more than 33 shots an hour when more than one cannon is being fired – and implements a 100-metre setback from horse trails. It also sets out fines for violating the rules at $150 for a first offence, $350 for a second and $500 for a third and any subsequent offence. Coun. Les Barkman expressed concern about taking on the province’s job of enforcing the regulations on propane cannons. The bylaw will return to council for consideration at an upcoming meeting.

While Delta and Mission have bylaws prohibiting Fraser Health from charging for pay parking at those hospitals, Abbotsford council doesn’t have the authority to make parking free at Abbotsford Regional Hospital, according to Mayor Henry Braun. Fraser Health’s policy – long denounced by hospital users as a heartless cash grab – came under fire again at a Jan. 29 meeting of Fraser’s board of directors in White Rock. Langley Township resident Harold Nagy demanded to know why Delta and Mission don’t have “this B.S. about pay parking” while patients and visitors must pay at other hospitals. Delta and Mission are the only two municipalities that have bylaws that prohibit pay parking at hospitals. “They should all be free,” Nagy said, adding the charges make some patients worry they’ll run out of time and be fined. “It’s a place of necessity when you go there. It’s not like going out for supper.” Not all councils have the power to prohibit pay parking at hospitals, Braun told The News on Tuesday. In Abbotsford’s case, the parking lot is on private property. “The city has no jurisdic-

communities.” The Canadian Medical Association Journal once likened pay parking to an unfair user fee that can add stress for patients and disrupt their care if they have to go out and feed a meter. Fraser provides free parking passes for renal dialysis patients and grants other financial hardship parking permits on a case-by-case basis. For everyone else, Matty predicts hospital pay parking is here to stay. “Having to pay for parking is something that people need to get their head around,” she said. “I don’t want to pay for parking. But parking seems to be becoming a premium here in B.C., especially the Lower Mainland. And I think we are all getting used to that fact.” Part of the rationale for pay parking is it spurs stall rotation, so some spaces are available when patients and visitors need them and aren’t occupied all day by users from surrounding businesses. Parking costs $3.50 an hour at most hospitals in the Fraser region, although that starts at $4.25 at Burnaby, Royal Columbian and Surrey Memorial hospitals, while hourly rates are lower in the eastern Fraser Valley – $2.50 in Abbotsford, $1.75 in Chilliwack and free in Hope.

Despite gains, domestic violence still plagues society

ESTATE PLANNING 101

Stats put Abbotsford-Mission in line with national numbers Tyler OLSEN Abbotsford News

Abbotsford-Mission’s rate of domestic violence may be in line with other urban areas in Canada, but those numbers only tell part of the story, according to those who regularly work with victims in the community. Newly released numbers by Statistics Canada put the Abbotsford-Mission Census Metropolitan Area’s domestic violence rate at 205 cases per 100,000 people in 2013, slightly above the average for Canadian census metropolitan areas, but below the national average when smaller cities and rural areas are factored in. A total of 361 cases were reported in 2013. Those figures, though, only reflect those cases reported to police, noted Betty Johnston, the interim executive director of the Women’s Resource Society of the Fraser Valley (WRSFV), which is based in Mission and provides support services to Mission and Abbotsford families dealing with domestic violence. “I think there is an awful lot of domestic violence that is going

unreported still,” Johnston said. “The incidence of domestic violence is still a challenge in our community and one that we don’t see any decrease in.” At the same time, there have been positive signs. Asked if women have become more likely to report domestic violence over the past decade, Johnston said: “I would say yes. I think there’s more awareness for the kinds of services that you can expect to find in the community.” Those services are based out of transition houses that can be accessed by women in violent relationships simply by calling the police, or at the WRSFV’s website at www.wrsfv.ca, which includes information on other services the organization provides. Lukhvinder Aujla, the supervisor of Abbotsford Community Services’ specialized victim assistance program, agreed that services have improved for the issue. She pointed to the Domestic Violence Unit, which sees a social worker, a probation officer, ACS personnel and an Abbotsford Police Department officer working together to address high risk situations.

PROTECTING YOU, YOUR MONEY,

“When you have that co-ordinated approach, you definitely get better results,” Aujla said. ACS workers also interact with women who have chosen not to report violence to police, but who are looking for information. “Sometimes they just want to know, ‘If I decide to leave, what’s going to happen?’” Aujla said. APD Const. Ian MacDonald said that while domestic violence continues to be underreported, police departments have become better educated, and the public has become more comfortable confronting the issue. He cited the annual Purple Light Nights campaign, which sees purple lights lit up around the Fraser Valley aimed to raise money and awareness of the issue. “It’s a devastating thing for not only the victims, but for families to go through,” he said. He also says that it’s important for the community to acknowledge that domestic violence continues to be a problem in the community. “It’s still a work in progress,” he said.

Tackling the cannon issue An attempt to at least partially muzzle propane cannons in Abbotsford will once again be undertaken by council. Civic politicians have repeatedly tried to build a set of local rules regulating the use of the anti-bird blasting devices, and each time failed to pull the trigger. After multiple attempts in 2013, council passed a set of stringent rules, which were eventually rejected by the provincial government, saying they contravened the Right to Farm Act, which protects agricultural practices – even some as invasive as berry cannons. A year later, the same council could not agree on a less strict set of local regulations, and left it to staff to look into a regional starling management program. It was a reasonable concept. If city hall couldn’t control cannons, then perhaps it could get regional help in controlling the bird species representing a major part of the problem of crop destruction. However, the regional district stepped

back, citing costs, potential ineffectiveness and indicating other communities were facing the problem to a lesser extent. This city now has a “new” council, with four fresh faces and a new mayor. They have three tasks in front of them. One: Get a firm grasp on this issue and hammer out a local bylaw to strictly enforce firing frequency and setback restrictions, such as what Langley has passed. Two: Research and initiate a local starling management program, regardless of the regional district’s interest, or lack thereof. Three: Undertake a major effort to bring together the mayors and councils of numerous other B.C. communities suffering from cannon noise pollution. Create a strong, united group to lobby the provincial government to find the courage to modernize the farming act and reflect the realities of the contemporary interface between agriculture and urbanization. Lock and load, council.

Other Hand Jeff Nagel’s story in The News last week relating to the enforcement of bridge tolls brought a smile to my face. Just before Christmas I received a letter from TReO announcing they had placed a refuse-to-issue order on me with ICBC. I would not be permitted to re-insure a vehicle or renew my driver’s licence without paying my delinquent bridge toll fees. Whaaattt??? I’d signed up for automatic preauthorization payments on my credit card long before the new Port Mann even opened, so how could I now be delinquent? Fortunately, before embarrassing myself with a lengthy rant containing naughty words to whoever picked

up the phone at TReO, I looked at my VISA card, and realized that it had been renewed last May. The authorization date on my tolling account had expired. I owed 33 dollars in crossing fees which meant, oddly, that I’d travelled over the Port Mann an uneven 11 times since the card expired. How I managed that is anyone’s guess. On top of the $33 I was charged a further $20 for being negligent, and to get the refuse-to-issue notice lifted. Of course, and as the person at the other end of the phone pointed out, they had been sending me emails with the subject line “Your TReO bill is available online” informing me that my credit card had expired. But since I knew my bill was being paid automatically I never bothered to look online or pay any attention to the emails. While I felt a bit stupid about my oversight, it was not deliberate as I knew each time I crossed the bridge it was costing me $3. So how I wonder, as detailed in Nagel’s story, can someone rack up

$8,000 in unpaid bridge tolls and not be aware of it until ICBC refuses to renew his insurance. Even with all the late fees and interest, that driver must have been one busy boy back and forth across the

What many people fail to understand is that ICBC is a most effective collection agency for unpaid fines, PST on vehicles bought out of province, bridge tolls and I’m sure many other fees that are delinquent. Fortunately, my quickly remedied skirmish with TReO averted any embarrassment with the sweet ladies I visit a few times a year to renew insurance on my vehicles. As to the expense of using the Port Mann, it is more than made up in time saved. I no longer feel a trip into Vancouver is going to take hours off my life. I will agree however, that a $6 return trip for someone who has to commute daily could be a little onerous on the budget, but a least there are no longer any time-stealing traffic jams to deal with on a regular basis.

PLEASE RECYCLE THIS NEWSPAPER

Whomever wrote that article on Jan. 28, I disagree with you with extreme prejudice. You act like we had a choice, we did not. You say the tolls were debated, yes, by politicians who make $100,000 a year and will never pay a toll. That toll is a bloody joke, the hardship it produces financially is inexcusable. Once again, our fat cat leaders who couldn’t manage a paper route, forced upon us a tolled bridge, and this is on top of all the taxes, levies, carbon this, greenhouse gas taxes we pay, as well as a gas taxes that the government puts into general revenue. That toll hits the average Joe right where it hurts: in the pocketbook. We are already overworked, under paid, overtaxed, pay too much for gas and food, live in the most expensive area in Canada, and due to again, our government not having housing ownership laws, we have outsiders buying up our real estate at an alarming rate and forcing ownership costs to “unobtanium,” so we have to buy further away from work, thus having to cross the bridge everyday. Consider this, the average worker probably crosses that bridge around 250 times a year, that’s $1,500 and not sure if tax applies? That’s highway robbery and that’s no laughing matter. Not sure about you or me but I didn’t get a $1,500 raise so where does that money come from? If you must toll, use some common sense and charge $1. Once more thing: how did the provincial government get a federal highway tolled? You can travel Route 1 all across Canada yet the only toll is the most expensive city in Canada, go figure. While we are on that subject, why didn’t the Sea to Sky have a toll? Oh yeah, the rich want to travel from Vancouver to Whistler free of charge. Last thing, who made ICBC god? They have no right to be stopping drivers from driving for not paying tolls and other payments. They already have too much power. It’s time to bring back competition. I didn’t realize how bad they are until a friend of mine with a 16 year old told me how much her insurance is, I damn near fainted. She has to pay $250 a month and can only get a maximum of three months? Sorry, but something is wrong here. Simon Field, Abbotsford

Abby father killed in highway crash Ravinder Atwal was ‘excellent driver,’ employer says An Abbotsford man has been identified as the victim of a fatal truck crash in Delta last Wednesday. Ravinder Singh Atwal died when his truck crashed and burst into flames on Highway 99 in Delta. While police have not yet released his name, his employer, Shimmy Walia of Mid-Valley Sand and Gravel, identified Atwal as the victim of Wednesday’s collision. Walia said Atwal was “an excellent driver” and had a wife and two kids. CTV reported that witnesses saw Atwal’s southbound truck wobble and lose control before lurching upward and jack-knifing over a median. They said it then struck a van heading in the opposite direction, causing an unbelievable explosion. CTV reported at the time that Good Samaritans tried to pull the truck driver of from the wreckage but were unsuccessful after the flames consumed the vehicle’s cab. “They had fire extinguishers and they were trying to extinguish the fire,” said Darlene Ward. “They did their best to get the guy out, but they had to give up.” The drivers of two other vehicles were injured in the crash and taken to hospital with non-lifethreatening injuries.

Hit-and-run kills bicyclist

A bicyclist is dead after a hit-and-run on Mt. Lehman Road late Thursday night. Police say they were notified of a severely injured bicyclist in the 2000 block of Mt. Lehman Road around 11:20 p.m. Thursday. Abbotsford Police Department (APD) officers and paramedics arrived, but were unable to save the man, who was pronounced dead at the scene. The victim has not yet been identified, but is believed to be between 40 and 60 years old. Police say the bicyclist was travelling south and was struck by an unknown vehicle driving in the same direction. “Given the amount of traffic in the area, it is likely that the collision took place only minutes before the APD received the call from the passers-by,” APD Const. Ian MacDonald said in a press release. The driver of the vehicle did not remain on the scene, and while investigators have gathered some evidence, police are appealing to witnesses and the driver to come forward. Anyone with information is asked to call the Abbotsford Police Department at 604-859-5225, text at 222973 (abbypd), or call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.

A new program in Mission will bring technology and agriculture together to support entrepreneurs and create jobs in B.C. The 13th BC Agri-food Venture Acceleration Program was officially launched last week at the Sumas Regional Consortium for High Tech (SRCTec) in Mission. Local dignitaries joined BC Minister of Agriculture Norm Letnick and Minister of Technology, Innovation and Citizens Services Amrik Virk as they announced $844,000 in funding from the provincial government.

Technology will also help farmers produce better crops, said Letnick, such as solving problems like keeping birds away from berry fields. Letnick said farmed salmon, B.C.’s top export, wouldn’t be possible without technology. There are currently four clients using the program at SRCTec, but six can be accom-

The funding will allow SRCTec to bring in dedicated executives-in-residence who will provide coaching and mentorship to companies in the program. Virk said 296 B.C. companies have benefitted from early-stage mentoring since 2011 and 850 jobs have been created as a result. B.C.’s technology sector is the third-largest producer of the province’s gross domestic product, generating $23.2 billion in revenue each year. Traditionally, techies and folks in agriculture have worked separately, but that’s not the way it is anymore, said Virk, noting they

modated at one time. Intakes will happen quarterly and up to 16 clients can be mentored annually. Ray Szabada, CEO and chairman of SRCTec, said the current four businesses have plenty of potential and he’s excited talent from the Valley can stay in the area. One company is creating a machine that removes the “stubble” from a field after the crop has been harvested, said Peter Briscoe, executive-in-residence. The machine will remove the fibres from inside the stalks and gather it for disposal. Traditionally, farmers have either had to burn the field or turn it over. Another business is developing new instruments to monitor soil and air quality, and to detect issues like crop disease. Briscoe will be training clients how to market, sell, and build their businesses. Other ideas being worked on are computer applications, including a farm safety application geared towards farmers whose first language isn’t English to help them keep track of the regulations and procedures required for safety certification on a farm. Another is an automated greenhouse system application for consumers, hobby farmers and small greenhouse operators. With the app, growers can use their tablet or smart phone to control light, moisture, and heat in their facility. Even after clients finish the eight-week program, staff at SRCTec will continue to offer support, advice and networking opportunities, said Briscoe. Szabada, who has worked in the information technology industry for more than 20 years, formed SRCTec in 2006 to develop the region’s strengths by providing resources for entrepreneurs. It focuses its work in the three main industry sectors in the Fraser Valley, agriculture, manufacturing and aerospace. The centre, originally located in Abbotsford, moved to Mission last year.

2015 HOME & GARDEN EXPO BRIAN MINTER

A recipient of the ‘Order of Canada’ and an ‘Honorary Doctorate of Technology’, Brian Minter, B.A., is a horticulturist, entrepreneur and co-owner with his wife, Faye, of Minter Country Garden, an innovative destination garden center and greenhouse growing operation in Chilliwack, British Columbia, Canada. Brian is well known from his magazine articles, syndicated newspaper columns and TV and radio programs. Brian is in demand internationally as a speaker by industry and by gardening and tourism groups. Brian has sat on the boards of many community organizations. He has recently served two terms as the first Chancellor of the University of the Fraser Valley.

KATHY VAN GOGH Kathy van Gogh has been a decorative artist since 2001. Her formal training began in the USA and in Canada. To further hone her skills, she travelled to Italy and France to learn from the authentic Masters of techniques including ornamentation, marbles, woodgrains, gold leafing and just about every other branch of what is generally referred to as decorative art. Initially, she opened her design company called FAKE IT, so-called because her work includes making walls look 2000 years old or transforming drywall into beautiful marbles, exotic woods and jawdropping finishes. Kathy has completed hundreds of projects in some of Vancouver’s most prestigious homes and businesses, and she has been featured in many renowned publications. Eventually, after rendering thousands of square feet of gorgeous walls, ceilings and floors, Kathy opened the only teaching studio for this ancient art form in all of Western Canada, STUDIO VAN GOGH. Now, as a recognized leader and innovator in the industry, Kathy is invited to travel all over the world teaching her methods and artistry to others. The next natural evolution of her business and art acumen lead her to create a line of products designed specifically to refinish old, abused furniture and turn them into works of art in the French Provence or Shabby Chic style. Her line of VAN GOGH FURNITURE PAINTOLOGY includes FOSSIL PAINT, BEESWAX, a tough-as-nails TABLETOP FINISH and her bling products called VAN GOGH FURNITURE MAKEUP. These products are all designed to live and play happily together so the DoIt-Yourselfer as well as the professional can create their own artistic pieces with confidence and ease. Essentially, Kathy has taken all her knowledge from the once exclusive world of decorative painting and made it accessible to everyone. BERT PULLES Bert Pulles has been controlling moles for more than 20 years. He has been studying and researching the creatures for just as long – he even wrote a book about moles and their habits. He learned the trade from a farmer and began his business with just one trap. Now, Bert makes more than 10,000 traps a year and sells them to pest control companies as well as individuals across Canada and the United States. His traps, called Mole Busters, are popular because they are easy to use. “Any trap on the market will catch a mole, but it’s the ease of use that makes my traps special,” said Bert about his product, which is manufactured in Mission. The traps are based on a European design that has been around for 300 years. He demonstrates the mole buster and happily shares his knowledge at local garden shops and trade shows. Bert is a familiar face at the Fraser Valley Home and Garden Expo in Abbotsford. He returns to the Tradex stage every year to share his knowledge.

Storage options include pull-out wet spice shelves, pull-out waste bin, large pantry with rollout shelves, glass display cabinetry, and pots and pans drawers. We will be showcasing interior storage options that hark back to the old adage… ”a place for everything, everything in its place”.

Other features include unique corner storage options, glass display shelving, a custom wine rack, recycling bins, and textured laminate backsplash. The appliances chosen include a dishwasher drawer, under-counter oven, built-in refrigerator, and smooth top cooking surface with custom-designed hood above. The community can explore creative depictions of weather at The Reach In her Maps of Weather exhibition, artist Willa Downing shows a recent body of mixed media artworks that combine mapping, scientific phenomena and artistic imagination. Rational, grid-like structures are contrasted with the much more organic shapes used to describe natural phenomena. Downing, who has a PhD in biochemistry and a diploma in painting, combines her passion for both art and science in this exhibition, which runs from Feb. 5 to March 1 at The Reach. There will be an opportunity to meet Downing in person on Feb. 17 at 10:30 a.m. in Abbotsford as part of The Reach’s Culture, Coffee and Cookies program. Pre-register in person at The Reach, call 604-864-8087 or visit online at www.thereach.ca/events-programs.

They were great hosts. The University of the Fraser Valley men’s wrestling team held its first-ever Canada West tournament on Sunday — dubbed the Cascades Classic — and dominated, taking seven individual medals and the aggregate title. Currently ranked No. 1 in the Canadian Interuniversity Sports (CIS) national rankings, the Cascades earned 51 points to take the tourney, with Winnipeg placing second with 43 points and Saskatchewan third with 40. Cascade wrestlers Aso Palani

(61 kg), Chanmit Phulka (100 kg) and Manheet Kalhon (130 kg) won gold, while Aman Kaler (65 kg), Devin Purewal (72 kg) and Brad Hildebrandt (90 kg) earned silver and Amrit Benning, wrestling with an injured knee, claimed bronze at 68 kg. The tournament was hosted at the Envision Athletic Centre. “It was time-consuming, but it was well worth it since we won,” said Raj Virdi, who co-coaches the Cascades with Arjan Bhullar, about staging the Cascades’ first home tourney.

“As a coach, it’s a great feeling, especially when your athletes wrestle really well. We lost some close matches that could have gone either way, but as a team, we wrestled very well.” On the women’s side, the NCAA Div. 2 Simon Fraser Clan finished first with 43 points, ahead of Winnipeg (19 points) and the Alberta Pandas (18). The Cascades ended up in sixth place with three points, and Shae Corwin registered the top finish for the women’s team with a fifth-place result at 51 kg.

Alex Kong made 26 saves in the loss against the Kodiaks. It was Kong’s fourth start in the last five games. was called off, and after much confusion, it was ruled that the net was off its moorings. The officials had blown two other plays dead in the third period because the net was dislodged, but this time it cost the Pilots the tying goal. “Our guys played well in the third, but to have a call like that, it’s frustrating,” Cowden said. Abby didn’t give up, but failed to find the net again. Grieve had the best opportunity, but was robbed in the slot on a rebound attempt with 15 seconds

remaining. Alex Kong made 26 saves in the loss, his fourth start in the last five games. Saturday, at Harry Jerome Recreation Centre the Pilots again had a shaky start. North Van’s Daniel Tait scored two goals in a four minute-span, and the Wolf Pack took a 3-0 lead into the first intermission. Jacob Crawford got the start in net but was pulled after the first, stopping 10 of 13 shots. Kong mopped up, allowing one goal on 17 shots. Brady Lawlor scored a power play goal at

18:46 of the second, giving him a team-high 23 goals on the season, and Cole Methorst added a man-advantage goal of his own within the final three minutes of the game, but it was too little, too late. Just four games remain on the regular season schedule. The Pilots will visit Aldergrove Community Arena for a rematch with the Kodiaks Wednesday night. The Ridge Meadows Flames will then cross the Fraser to take on the Pilots at the MSA Arena Friday night.

The Abbotsford Pilots took a step backwards last weekend, losing twice against teams with better records. On Saturday, the Pilots lost 4-2 to the North Vancouver Wolf Pack, the owners of the Pacific Junior Hockey League’s top record. However, it was Friday’s 2-1 loss to the Aldergrove Kodiaks at the MSA Arena that stung the most. Abbotsford (20-18-02) had an opportunity to close the gap on Aldergrove (21-12-2-5), who sit in first place in the Harold Brittain Conference standings. The visiting Kodiaks got off to an early lead, with Cameron Davitt jumping on a rebound just 97 seconds into the game. Then, Davitt assisted on Eric Callegari’s second-period power play goal, giving him 11 points in his last four games, and putting the home side down by two goals with no momentum. The Pilots came alive in the third, outshooting Aldergrove 11-7. “As far as us coming back, you saw in the third period, we were all over them, we outshot them, we were in their end about 80 per cent,” said Pilots head coach Jim Cowden. The Pilots finally got on the board at 10:39 of the third. Defenceman Devon Becker – who has six points since returning from injury – fed Kolton Grieve from the point, and Grieve’s backhander from the slot made its way through a screen and past goalie Ben Giesbrecht. Colton Cowden was credited with a deflection for his eighth of the season. “The top line was great in the third period,” said coach Cowden. “They were awful in the first two.” With all the momentum in their favour, it looked as if the Pilots had tied the game at 13:45. In a tremendous individual effort, Grieve rolled off a check along the right boards, cut to the net and whistled a backhander past Giesbecht’s blocker. However, the goal
