Wild winning ways the wave of the future MBSS students take home medals in robotics and film ARNE PETRYSHEN

Last week, a number of Mount Baker Secondary students joined others from all over B.C. at the Provincial Skills Canada competition, and students took home a number of medals. The competition is a showcase for trades and technology skills and took place April 15 in Abbotsford. Medal winners from Mount Baker include Devon Kennedy and Brandon Ouillette, who won gold in TV/Video Production; Ravindu Ranasinghe, Adam Webster and Joshua Zamora won gold in Robotics; and Cam Wilson, Noah Marasco, Brennan Weaver and Ryley Holliday won silver in robotics. Some of the robotics students competed last year as well as this year. The robots were designed around the competition guidelines.

Advocacy group for the aging launching Kootenay chapter TRE VOR CR AWLEY

An organization advocating for all matters relating to an aging society is opening up a chapter in the Kootenay region. CARP—the Canadian Association of Retired Persons—is a national, non-partisan, non-profit organization that promotes social change to bring financial security, equitable access to health care and freedom from age discrimination. The launch of the new chapter, which aims to cover the East and West Kootenay, will launch at the College of the Rockies on Monday, May 4, 2015, in Room 205.

Cranbrook house consumed by fire FOR THE TOWNSMAN

The investigation into the cause of a residential fire Tuesday afternoon was set to begin Wednesday morning. Firefighters with Cranbrook Fire & Emergency Services responded to a structure fire Tuesday afternoon at 2505 4th Street South. The call for response arrived approximately 2:50 pm and upon arrival crews found the home fully involved. No one was home at the time. Crews got the fire under control within 20 minutes and salvage and overhaul operations are ongoing. The cause of the fire is yet undetermined. The home was a rental and the renters, Sara and Scott McKay, have two six year old boys and a nine year old daughter. They lost everything in the fire.
