Zumba instructor Josee Bergeron led the crowd in musical warm-up prior to the start of the 13th Walk for Multiple Sclerosis, starting from Baker Park in Cranbrook, Sunday, May 3. Every year more than 40,000 Canadians in more than 160 communities, including Cranbrook, lace up at the MS Walk to raise funds for people living with MS. Thousands of dollars were raised for the East Kootenay MS support Group. See later in the Townsman for details.

Gun owner sentenced to six months for shooting death TOWNSMAN STAFF
A Jaffray man was sentenced to six months in jail to be served in the community in connection with the death of a tragic gun accident that killed a teenaged family friend. George Phillips was sentenced in Cranbrook Provincial Court on Tuesday morning, as Judge Grant Sheard added other conditions such as a oneyear probationary period and a two-
year firearms ban as part of his ruling. Phillips was charged with careless storage of a firearm and storage of firearm contrary to regulation. On June 16, 2011, Michael Voth died in a residence in Jaffray from a gunshot wound after friends were handling a shotgun that was not properly secured in a gunsafe.

Local couple aiding with Nepali recovery Alex and Tricia McLeod stay on in Kathmandu after quake experience TREVOR CRAWLEY
Though it wasn’t the trip they envisioned, Alex and Tricia McLeod are safe in Nepal as they have moved from a small rural community to the national capital of Kathmandu. Following extensive damage to the country’s infrastructure due to a massive earthquake a
week ago, the McLeods had stayed in rural parts of the country before reaching Kathmandu on Monday. They aren’t in any particular hurry to get home, and have been helping out wherever they can. The couple had been helping clear debris at a hospital in Lukla and also trekked up to Namche
