More land eyed as potential waste-plant sites Private and public land identified by Eastside committee
Kevin Laird/Victoria News
Dangling firefighters Victoria firefighters perform high angle rope rescue training exercises off the side of the CIBC building fronting View Street. Firefighters rappelled from the rooftop, performing a high angle “window washer” rescue from the 13-storey highrise. Both Victoria and Saanich firefighters participate in the Joint High Angle Rescue Team which serves the Capital Region.
A number of well-known Victoria sites such as Beacon Hill Park, the Inner Harbour and Ogden Point have been named as potential places for wastewater treatment facilities. The Eastside Select Committee, a sub-committee of the Capital Regional District tasked with finding solutions for wastewater treatment and resource recovery, has identified roughly three-dozen privately- and publicly-owned sites in Victoria, Oak Bay and Saanich as places for sewage treatment plants. Victoria Mayor Lisa Helps said the committee narrowed down the sites based on what municipal staff, mayors and councils have determined to be “technically feasible” for wastewater treatment. “Each municipality has shown leadership by bringing forward these sites,” said Helps, who is also the chair of the committee. “The decision around siting is an exciting opportunity for elected officials, technical folks and the public to work together so no one is making decisions in a bubble.” Holland, Topaz, Smith Hill, Royal
Athletic, Hollywood, Pemberton and Central parks in Victoria were also listed as potential sites. “We’re revealing the technically feasible sites before we’ve made any decisions so the public can help us by bringing their values, criteria and desired outcomes into a meaningful conversation,” added Helps. Some of the smaller sites could host more compact distributed plants, while others are large enough to hold a plant that could service the entire core area. The next steps are to review the locations and narrow down the number of sites. The committee will hold two sessions to give the public an opportunity to learn more and offer input into the site selection, the first is on May 30 at 10 a.m. at the UVic Cadboro Commons building and May 31 at 10 a.m. at the Victoria Conference Centre. The CRD’s sewage-treatment project has a budget of $778 million, of which the federal government has committed $253 million. Earlier this month, the Westside Select Committee, comprising of municipalities in Esquimalt, View Royal, Colwood and Langford, said there were at least 20 “technically feasible sites” in its area. editor@vicnews.com

The 117th annual edition of the Island Farms Victoria Day Parade is reinventing itself, sort of. “We’ve got a few surprises for everyone,” said Kelly Kurta, parade chair and general manger of the Greater Victoria Festival Society. This year’s parade, which starts at 9 a.m. Monday (May 18) and runs the length of Douglas Street from Finlayson to Humboldt streets, is dedicated to former parade chair Ron Butlin. Butlin died last year. There are 112 entries in this year’s parade, lower than previous years, but that’s by design, Kurta said. “We talked to the city and they felt a 3.5-hour parade was really long for children, for seniors

and the audience watching. It doesn’t really engage everybody for that long,” she said. “One of the things we wanted to do was make it a little bit smaller and more engaging, but a bigger experience.” Kurta expects the parade to last about 2.5 hours. New this year is a performance by the Greater Victoria Concert Band in front of City
Hall from 8 to 9 a.m. A CH-124 Sea King helicopter from Royal Canadian Air Force Squadron 443, based at the Victoria Airport, will lead the parade, flying 500 feet above the crowd. Other highlights of the parade will be a visit by residents of Morioka, Japan, which mark 30 years as a sister city of Victoria. Fifteen bands will take part in this year’s parade, including Lambrick Park marching band. It will be the first Canadian band in the procession as it is the last Victoria Day Parade for band teacher Bruce Ham. At the parade’s end, there will be music presentations and the Food Truck Festival at the Royal B.C. Museum. “This year’s parade will rock it to the end,” said a confident Kurta. klaird@vicnews.com

COMMUNITY NEWS IN BRIEF
Band teacher plays colourful tune
Input sought on North Park Village The City of Victoria, along with a number of local community associations, is looking for public input regarding possible improvements to the North Park Village along Cook Street. The pavement along Cook Street from Pandora to Caledonia avenues is deteriorating and requires new asphalt. The city, the North Park Association, the Greater Victoria Placemaking Network and the Fernwood Community Association are looking for feedback about how people travel along the street, the look and feel, village identity and business and social environment. The workshop is on Thursday (May 29) from 5:30 to 8 p.m. at the First Metropolitan United Church of Canada (932 Balmoral Rd.), or email engage@victoria.ca.
Voting open for design competition The future design of Esquimalt Village is now in the hands of residents. Voting has begun for the Esquimalt Living Community Design Competition. Four submissions have been selected as finalists in the design of the two-acre mixed use town centre next to Municipal Hall. Submissions can be viewed and voted on at the Esquimalt Recreation Centre until May 27. The winner of the design competition will be announced at the Growing Better Cities Conference on May 30 at University of Victoria.

Gordon Head middle school band teacher Andrea Blair holds a colourcoded, translated copy of Mozart’s Eine Kleine Nachtmusik she designed for student Daniel Davenport. He now plays in the Lambrick Park secondary band.

What started as an attempt to help a student read music has turned into a project that could open doors to thousands of would-be musicians. Even if Andrea Blair’s colourcoded adaptation of sheet music doesn’t catch on, it’s already done what it was intended to do: allow one of 200 students to join band. Blair was the 2014 middle school recipient of the Black Press-Staples Great Teachers award, for going beyond the call of duty as music director at Gordon Head middle school. Her efforts to help former student Daniel Davenport overcome dyslexia in the music room led to the creation of a colour-coded music scheme. He showed up in Grade 6 hoping to join the band, and Blair wasn’t going to say no, as long as Davenport put in the effort. Within a few weeks they began to sort out a solution, and nearly four years later Davenport still plays the clarinet. “I don’t have time to think about the position of each note on the staff,” he said. “The colour tells me where to put my fingers. When I was able to communicate that to Mrs. Blair, we got to where we are today.” As soon as she found he was relying on the colourized notes in the staff to find the position, he suggested it would be easier to simply do away with the traditional notation and go with colour

only. Throughout Davenport’s three years at Gordon Head, he met with Blair for a weekly one-on-one session. And now that he’s at Lambrick Park secondary, he continues to play in the band using the coloured music that Blair developed. “Daniel is performing well with Lambrick band and continues to use the colour notation. We meet two to three times a month for a clarinet lesson and continue to tweak the system,” said Blair, who also teaches strings programs at Torquay elementary. “I’m very excited about the software progress. When my second cousin was visiting last summer he reminded me he is a programmer and would love to be involved in the project. So he is now devel-
oping the software for the colour notation. Hopefully by summer it will be ready for a test drive.” Blair’s efforts to colour the music for Daniel started with a basic approach, attempting to add colours to his music, the same sheet that everyone else uses. It came from her desire to make the music room a supportive environment. “In my music room, a lot of kids consider it a safe place and feel they can really step out of their comfort zone,” she said. “They can develop that love of music. I’ll find kids who are not academically strong in here, and they shine.” It’s something she’s carried with her since she studied Grade 6 band with “Mr. Creswick” in Northern Alberta. “He was the one that inspired me and sup-

ported me in everything I did in music. We remained friends for 28 years.” Ironically, Blair teaches in the neighbourhood where Creswick grew up, and some of her students’ parents were in the same school band he was in at Mount Douglas secondary. If all goes well, Blair is hoping to submit an article to music educator journals as soon as the fall, regarding Davenport and the coloured music notation. Last year’s elementary school Great Teachers winner Marilyn Hodgson subsequently retired from Kelset elementary in North Saanich after 35 years of teaching. Great Teachers high school recipient Jamie Davis spurred the Spectrum Community School band to yet another big year. In nine years he has built the program from two dozen students to approximately 200. His band students end the school year with a full calendar of events, including marching band performances in the upcoming Victoria Day Parade on Monday, (May 18), the Oak Bay Tea Party Parade on June 6 and the Esquimalt Buccaneer Day Parade on June 13. reporter@saanichnews.com

OUR VIEW
Controlling the elections The B.C. government and the courts are doing their best to keep participation in elections under strict control. The two big political parties are behind proposed legislation that would give political parties a complete list of everyone who voted in a provincial election. This is nothing more than an assault on privacy. In some ways, it is an attempt to use sophisticated technological means to go back to the era when people had to cast their votes in public. In those days, voters could lose their jobs, their homes and face assault and other criminal acts. Thankfully, Green Party MLA Andrew Weaver and the privacy commissioner are standing against this. The effort to coerce Elections B.C. to hand over this private information to political parties must fail. Meanwhile, the B.C. Court of Appeal has backed legislation which states groups or individuals must register with Elections B.C. if they plan to say or distribute anything that might be considered election advertising. The court’s decision, by a 2-1 margin, goes against the recommendations of the chief electoral officer, who said in both 2010 and 2014 that there was no problem in not registering those who spend a small amount in placing advertising during an election. While there is a need for some spending limits during campaigns, it is unlikely that spending $1,000 by either an individual or group will sway the outcome of an election. The B.C. Freedom of Information and Privacy Association says the court decision is an assault on freedom of expression. The organization launched the court challenge to try and overthrow the requirement to register with Elections B.C., on constitutional grounds. This law is far too restrictive, and it needs to be repealed.

Readers respond: Deer and development Humans are the invasive species Re: Cull only solution to get rid of deer (News, May 6) Deer, squirrels and rabbits are not an invasive species, but we are. These animals coexisted in the green spaces and woodlands of their natural habitat for centuries. But that habitat was taken from them over many years to build and build and build. Now that we have destroyed their habitat and natural sources of food, we complain about them being “pests.” They are not here because they wanted to be around people, noise and traffic. Mr. Forbes mentions that his family has lived in Victoria since the late 1800s. Well, I am sure his ancestors killed off more than a few of the ancestors of the “pests” and why? To survive, of course – just what the deer are doing. They are not “destroying” his produce and flowers – they are eating them to survive. They
are not a danger to humans, but we are a danger to them. To quote Mr. Forbes: “Left alone they will continue to expand their numbers and territory.” Those words could well be applied to us. Elaine Sheridan Saanich
Cookie-cutter approach doesn’t favour residents The responsibility for the issues relating to the proposed six-storey development for the Cook Street Village do not rest with the proponent, members of the community or city staff. They rest solely on the shoulders of mayor and council. Despite lobbing for more than 20 years, we have each been deliberately denied our own community plan, so council can continue to force on us their vision and decisions of what is best for our communities. Mayor and council spent years creating an Official Community Plan whose broad strokes and cookie-cutter approach leave the

communities of Victoria far more vulnerable than they were prior to its creation. Without any direct consultation with the individual communities on this topic, our villages were designated as Large Urban Villages that permit the construction of six-storey buildings to line both roadsides right up to the property line, where zero setbacks are acceptable. Why is it acceptable? Some years back mayor and council permitted an unwritten rezoning policy, which is used by almost all large rezoning involving residential and commercial, called an SSR (site specific rezoning). This allows developers to ignore existing zones and create their own personalized one. Under an SSR they can apply to build whatever height, size, use and appearance they desire. Policies be damned and mayor and council alone decide if it’s acceptable. Recently other property owners, accounting for a significant percentage of the
village, have been approached to buy and tear down and build (SSR) under the Large Urban Village designation. Should we just be a community by name only? What can you do? The answer is: do something. Tell a friend. • Email mayorandcouncil@ victoria.ca requesting another community mailout and meeting for Cook and Oliphant, so everybody has an opportunity to voice their thoughts on this and future developments for the village. • Request an immediate review of the cookie-cutter approach in designating the villages of Victoria, and ignoring the importance of their individuality. • Please, tell them why preserving the character of your village is so important. • For further information or supporting documents, email me at VictoriaBC@shaw.ca Your voice can and will make all the difference. It’s a fresh take on a timeless classic. That is what audiences can expect from the latest adaptation of Shakespeare’s classic tale of Macbeth on now at the Blue Bridge Repertory Theatre. Macbeth is the tragic tale of a Scottish general who receives a prophecy from three weird sisters that one day he will become the king of Scotland. He becomes consumed by his ambition and desire and jumps into action to take the throne for himself. Traditionally, the play involves more than 40 characters. But director Brian Richmond has adapted the tale to be told from the perspective of the three weird sisters rather than its traditional form and involves six speak-

We’ve also put it into a timeless environment . . . and the original score is very contemporary. It’s this interesting meld of old and new that we’re attempting to accomplish,” said Richmond. Tourism Victoria offers up staff in unique online auction In an effort to support the local tourism industry, Tourism Victoria is putting its own staff services up for auction during the Spring Travel Auction which begins today (May 15). The auction, in its 20th year, includes travel packages, such as a seven-night Rocky Mountaineer Canadian Rockies experience, a three night pamper package at the Fairmont San Francisco, and a VIP day at the Butchart Gardens, among other things. This year, Tourism Victoria has also added human capital to the auction, including two hours of a content marketing special-
ist's time to consult on improving social media strategies, two hours of a visitor councillors's time to consult with guests of a hotel or B&B helping them make the most out of their stay and two hours of a chief marketing officer's time to brainstorm with a business. “The tourism industry in Greater Victoria and beyond has been very generous with offers of great tourism product to support Tourism Victoria’s spring online travel auctions,” said Paul Nursey, CEO of Tourism Victoria. “All funds raised go right back into marketing Greater Victoria to potential visitors. There are

They have met with governments, First Nations, community groups and local businesses to learn more about what matters most to the people who live and work in the province. They have also hosted open houses to provide information about their projects and opened community offices where the public can meet their teams and have questions answered. Our goal is to ensure that local voices help shape LNG in B.C. The BC LNG Alliance is the voice of British Columbia’s new LNG export industry. Meg Sugrue Royal B.C. Museum
This spring the Royal B.C. Museum launched Transcribe, a crowdsourcing website that allows the public to transcribe valuable historical records. This exciting project is improving the museum and archives’ public accessibility by turning handwritten, audio and video records into searchable data. By donating their time to transcribe letters, diaries, journals and other materials, volunteers are helping to share B.C.’s history, all from the comfort of home. Crowd-sourcing is an increasingly popular
way for museums to harness audiences and improve the accessibility of their collections. The concept behind Transcribe is simple – we provide digital photographs of archival materials alongside a blank text area, and volunteers type exactly what they see. Anyone with access to the Internet can participate; visitors simply visit the website, choose a collection and start transcribing. Once the finished transcriptions have been approved by Royal B.C. Museum staff, the data becomes searchable on the Transcribe site. The project was initiated by the New Archives and Digital Preservation department and archivist Ann ten Cate as an innovative way to reach the huge, untapped pool of talented and enthusiastic digital volunteers around the world. Visitors are not
obligated to transcribe work; they can also view the collections as an online exhibition or browse existing transcriptions. There’s no need to create an account, and visitors can contribute as much or as little as they like. Plus it’s fun to use. The site currently features thousands of pages of diaries, letters and other materials from the First World War. As the project continues to grow, new collections, themes and media will be introduced. The first batch of images includes the letters of Victoria lawyer Arthur Douglas Crease, who described the war in letters to his family. In one particularly poignant letter, Crease writes, “it seems doubtful if I shall ever be able to write or talk about what we have been through on the Somme. You know I came out the only officer in our company out of six. The battalion is covered with glory
and wounds.” Arthur survived the war, and his correspondence became an important part of B.C.’s history. Another notable collection presents the lively letters of Deborah Florence Glassford. Between 1914 and 1919, Deborah received hundreds of letters and memorabilia from more than 20 friends and acquaintances involved in the war effort overseas. Many of these friends came from Vancouver’s elite and most of the men were officers, with notable names including Francis Egerton Grosvenor, 4th Baron Ebury, Arthur Hussey Fitzgerald, James Pemberton Fell and Clarence Marpole. Interested in volunteering online? Visit Transcribe today and help us tell the stories that matter. Transcribe. royalbcmuseum.bc.ca. ••• Meg Sugrue is a web specialist at the Royal B.C. Museum.

Victoria’s Filipino community is rallying in support of victims of the two Nepal earthquakes that have devastated the region over the past two weeks. Locals are hosting a $15 eat-in or take-out dinner at the Philippine Bayanihan Community Centre (1709 Blanshard St.) this week to raise funds for the Canadian Red Cross to help victims.

“We identify with their loss and pain. It is our turn to help,” said Laila Pires, spokesperson for the Bayanihan Cultural and Housing Society. The first 7.8-magnitude earthquake — becoming known as the Ghorka earthquake — struck on April 25, and has claimed the lives of more than 8,000 people. Pires noted that the second deadly 7.3-magnitude earthquake, which struck on Tuesday 150 kilometres from Kathmandu near the town of Namche Bazaar, makes the recovery effort more urgent and the need for donations more dire. The dinner is tonight (May 15) from 5 to 8 p.m.

the TDI cruised effortlessly at over 120 km/h. After a lunch break of traditional paella, the group headed out again into the canyons and rugged landscape – very similar to Utah – with carved cliffs. The most memorable part was the smell of wild Rosemary bushes and the wild Jasmine filling the air. Not just a hint, rather a wonderful aroma that occupied the entire valley floor. As we pulled into Malaga after 12 hours behind the wheel of the 2015 Touareg, I have come to appreciate it all over again. This is a premium VW offering, starting at $53,965. The TDI is the one to get. Not that the regular gasoline is a bad choice; rather, the TDI diesel is a better choice. The TDI version delivers amazing power; it uses up to 25 per cent less fuel and has amazing resale value. The 2015 model gets a slight facelift, so slight I’d have a hard time pointing out the changes, but this SUV is about what it can do, not how flashy it is. Toyota introduced a completely redesigned and more upscale Highlander in 2008 (its mid-sized utility vehicle) that was bigger with three rows of seating, more powerful and more expensive. Bad timing, as that very same year the world`s economy took an unexpected and spectacular nosedive, which sparked a major consumer trend to scale down. This model offers has a more rounded shape with pronounced wheel arches and there’s a flip-open rear door window. It`s a handy feature that allows you to drop stuff into the cargo area without opening the large rear door. The V6 engine versions of Highlander came with four-wheeldrive plus extra goodies like a back-up camera, a power driver’s seat and fog lamps. Above base, the higher trim levels were Sport, Limited and SR5 (only for 2008). A four-wheel-drive Highlander Hybrid with a gas/electric powertrain was also offered and came in base and Limited trim levels. Hybrid power is provided by a 3.3 litre V6 engine coupled to an electric motor and they have a combined power output of 270 horsepower, which is roughly the same as the regular 3.5-litre V6. The hybrid`s city/highway fuel economy, however, is rated (new five-cycle method) at 8.6 / 9.5 L/100km compared to 13.8 / 10.4 km/100km for the 3.5 litre V6. Reacting to the new economic reality, in an impressively quick way, Toyota introduced a substantially lower priced and more basic, front-drive Highlander, midway through the ’09 model year. It came with two-row seating and a 2.7 litre 4-cylinder engine mated to a 6-speed automatic transmission. This engine can provide 187 horsepower and 186 lb-ft of torque at 4,100 rpm and its city/highway fuel economy rating is 11.8 / 8.7 L/100km. Highlander is a ‘Top Safety Pick’ according to the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, based on its front, side and rear crash tests. Highlander was included in a series of safety recalls (see list), including the famous “floor mat recall”, in response to mysterious defect that supposedly caused unin-
tended acceleration. No changes were made to the 2010 Highlander, but for 2011, it got revised front and rear styling, with slimmer headlights, a new front grille and new taillights. The Sport model was discontinued and the hybrid version got a (combined 280 horsepower) 3.5L V6. A third-row seat also became standard on all models. No significant changes were made for the 2012 or 2013 model years, which were the last of this generation Highlander. The completely revised 2014 Highlander, a sleeker family-friendly seven passenger cross utility, recorded its best sales year ever. A comfortable and secure all-weather family cruiser, the Toyota Highlander is a low risk purchase with a history of solid reliability and excellent resale value retention. Cracking the curber code…
New equipment would help catch breast cancer earlier The Victoria Hospitals Foundation is fundraising to upgrade a critical piece of equipment that can help diagnose breast cancer earlier and give patients a greater chance of survival from the dreaded disease. The foundation launched its campaign recently at Victoria General Hospital to raise $420,000 for the purchase of a new mammography and stereotactic biopsy machine, which will help medical teams diagnose the smallest cancers in their earliest stages. Dr. Brent Lee, a radiologist and clinical section head of the breast imaging program at VGH, said the machine will have a significant impact on outcomes for women
with breast cancer. “It offers women two procedures in one: digital mammography to detect cancer and a minimally invasive biopsy in the same appointment to confirm the diagnosis,” he said. “By pinpointing and biopsying even the smallest of cancers quickly and accurately, we can immediately begin lifesaving treatment and rule out serious problems with confidence.” The foundation has mailed out campaign letters to Greater Victoria homes asking for help with the campaign, but donations can also be made by calling 250-519-1750 or online at victoriahf.ca.

The skirl of the pipes and the scent of whisky will be in the air as the 2015 Victoria Highland Games and Celtic Festival takes over Topaz Park May 16 to 18. New events and exhibits include a strongman competition, a sheaf toss competition, the Celtic Cup – a three-day Gaelic football tournament – sheep dog herding demonstrations, hurling demonstrations, blacksmithing and more. Although the weekend, now three days long, is strong on athletic competition, music, dance and entertainment is also high on the list of things to do, including a crowd favourite, highland dance. One local performer to watch out for is provincial champion Sarah Bryan, 14. Inspired by her older cousins to take up highland dancing, her work ethic has taken her to the top of her class. “I just like how energetic it is and how I can learn new things – it makes me happy,” she says. The Arbutus middle school student finished in the top six in Canada and in the top five in international competition last year. She won her first championship at age nine and has been consistently in the top 10 in her age group since. “She’s a very driven child,” says her mom Triena. “She’s the same in school. She’s starting to pick up the chanter, plays violin, flute, field hockey – she gives everything 100 per cent effort.”
Don Denton/Victoria News
Dancer Sarah Bryan will perform at the Victoria Highland Games in Topaz Park this weekend. The teen has set herself a goal to dance at the World competition in Scotland one day. “You meet a lot of new friends and really nice people and you get to accomplish things you didn’t
know you could do,” says the talented youngster. For a full list of events and entertainment go to victoriahighlandgames.com. editor@vicnews.com

Not hearing clearly when many people are talking? Many people find that they are no longer able to understand everything, particularly when in the company of others. Engineered in Switzerland, System Audéo V has been designed specifically to understand in group situations.
The majority of those surveyed stated that when exposed to considerable background noise they are able to hear that something is being spoken, but can no longer discern precisely what is being said. The words seem blurred and indistinct. But why is that? The effect tends to manifest itself in company, or in the restaurant. It is the high-pitched tones perceived at the entrance to the cochlea that are decisive when it comes to hearing things accurately. In the majority of cases these parts of the inner ear are the first to be affected by noise or aging. As the high-pitched tones are no longer perceived well, the auditory center of the brain begins to struggle to decode language. It’s a bit like an image that doesn’t have enough pixels.
Hearing sensation! Swiss researchers: Audéo V is superior for conversation.
Without Audéo V
With Audéo V
The New Audeo V hearing aids provide considerable reduction in noise allowing you to focus on speech.
New hearing chip developed Swiss audiologists have developed a new hearing aid chip that is designed to improve speech comprehension in noise, particularly with hearing loss in the high-frequency range. People can test the new Audéo V system by Phonak simply by calling now to do so. The test phase in particular is designed to clarify how speech comprehension can be improved in various situations and what role a new technology called “Autosense OS” plays. The chip recognizes where the person being spoken to
is located and amplifies only his or her voice, while ambient noise is lowered and the optimum hearing programs are seamlessly adjusted. Thanks to several synchronous microphones, the hearing system can detect sound in all directions and select the direction that speech is coming from within milliseconds. According to Swiss researchers, this significantly augments speech comprehension, especially in conversation. Interested people can register for a no-obligation demonstration of the Audéo V by calling 888.408.7377

Dobber Classic reunites old friends Travis Paterson Black Press
When former CFAX 1070 sportscaster Ken Dobson started an invitational golf tournament, he wanted it to be fun and inexpensive above all else. Twenty-one years later, the Dobber Classic is sticking to Dobson’s vision with its June 5 tournament at the Cedar Hill Golf Course. “Dobson was a devoted communityminded person who supported all the amateur sports groups,” says Greater Victoria Sports Hall of Fame director John Bate, who chaired the Dobber Classic for 20 years before passing on the role. “If anyone asked, he would show up and speak. He was committed that way.” Ken Dobson (1923 to 1995) was a colourful and much loved sportscaster and sports director at CFAX. After his death, CFAX initiated the Ken Dobson Athletic Scholarship in his memory for graduating Grade 12 students who are active in sports. Before he retired, Bate managed the old Memorial Arena and was the director of Parks and Recreation at the City of Victoria. His family lived in Saanich, two doors down from Dobson’s family. “We got to know Ken quite well and really see what he was about,” Bate says. While the tournament entry price has slowly grown – it’s up to $110 per person – Bate points to the loyalty of the tournament players and the number of goodies that come with each registration including tickets
to the Victoria Shamrocks, Victoria Royals and UVic Vikes, among other items. “This is one of our two annual fundraisers and it’s a big deal to us, as our goal is to produce a new display (for the Hall of Fame) at Save-On-Foods Memorial Centre each year, usually on that year’s inductees,” he says. “The tournament still a great deal for what you get. You don’t find golf tournaments as fun as this where you come out with as many sponsored gifts for the price.” And the same players keep coming back
each year, Bate adds. Organizers see a return rate of about 85 to 90 per cent from the previous year. “It’s an annual reunion with a core of players who’ve been coming out since it started,” he says. “Even the foursomes are the same, slowly changing one player at a time.” Among the big draws is an impressive sports auction with autographed Vancouver Canucks sticks and Toronto Maple Leafs memorabilia, as well as a prized Jose Bautista bat, signed by the Toronto Blue Jays slugger.
It’s safe to say a bat like that would fetch an auction price in the thousands of dollars in Vancouver. “Sometimes we need to remind ourselves there are other perks of being in Victoria. Though, all it takes is two bidders,” Bate says wryly. Registration is open now for the 2015 Dobber Golf Classic. The entry fee includes golf, roast beef buffet dinner and a quality prize for every golfer. To register, please go online to gvshof.ca or raceonline.ca/events/ details/?id=921.

BUYER’S TIP | Include the duplex category when doing an online search for homes
Don’t discount duplexes in home searches Infill-style “semis” offer another option for buyers Don Descoteau Black Press
When Susan and Nick Taylor were looking for a home in Greater Victoria about a year ago, they were shown upwards of 30 properties. Coming from Orangeville, Ont., about an hour northwest of Toronto, they weren’t fixated on any part of the Capital Region. Given the budget they were working with, they did have options, but neither seemed appealing, Susan recalls. “What it seemed to boil down to was, in the price range that we were in, we were going to be in a close-knit subdivision where everyone else looked into your yard,” she says. “Or conversely, a property that needed a new roof, new furnace, new windows.” Then their agent showed them a Colwood home they would have referred to as a “semi” in Ontario. That was short for semi-detached home, or in Victoria parlance, a half-duplex. But with no strata fees to pay for shared maintenance, a full 2,000 square feet of living space and a sizeable yard, it fit the bill for the couple. “I didn’t hesitate, because of what it offered over everything else we were looking at for the same price,” Susan says. “It was kind of a no-brainer, and it didn’t hurt that we were only about six houses up from the water.” After they moved and friends back home were trying to find their new digs on MLS, the searchers had a hard time, since this full-sized home – essentially the equivalent of a townhome – was listed in the strata duplex category, along with old-style duplexes normally associated with being rental revenue properties. The couple, now looking to move again, feared their home wouldn’t be seen by as many people who might be interested in such a setup. Listing agent Cheryl Laidlaw with Royal LePage Coast Capital Realty calls it a “bit of glitch” in the way MLS works. She says many potential buyers aren’t searching for a halfduplex because of the duplex stigma, or they may not understand how many variants of that configuration are available. Newer style duplexes on large city lots offer an alternative to townhomes, Laidlaw says, for those people who aren’t interested in being part

Nick and Susan Taylor stand in front of their half-duplex that is currently on the market. They say their home, which is nearly 2,000 square feet and offers a good-sized yard, is not like many duplex properties found in that category on the MLS. of a strata corporation and all that entails. The construction of half-duplexes is more solid, she adds, with soundproofing elements that drastically reduce the amount of noise transferring between the two units. “The benefit is, you get much more house for the price.” While newer duplexes on single lots can be found in various places around the West Shore, duplexes in which the two owners do not function jointly as a strata complex are not exactly rare, says Wendy Moreton, an agent and president-elect of the Victoria Real Estate Board. “Anecdotally, I’d say about half of the duplexes you come across don’t comply with the Strata Act,” she says. “The reason a duplex might have more appeal than a strata (townhouse) is that it’s less complicated. Some people like the idea of living in a strata and leaving the maintenance to someone else. In that regard, something like this would be simpler.” Even if there is just one duplex on a property, there are still joint expenses that come up, such
as house insurance – it is a combined structure – roofing, and any common landscaping areas. Moreton says any grouping of four or less homes is not required to complete a depreciation report, as other traditional stratas must do, condos or townhomes. While potential buyers of a half-duplex would be expected to have a house inspection done as with a detached family home, the lack of strata fees isn’t necessarily the selling feature it once was, Moreton says. “Low strata fees used to be promoted as way of attracting buyers, but it was found that those complexes were often not as well maintained,” she says. “It’s changing the way people look at stratas.” While marketing a home like the Taylors’ may mean a little more legwork by agents, the fact such homes are available is encouraging for buyers looking for more home than what it might first appear they can afford. editor@vicnews.com

the TDI cruised effortlessly at over 120 km/h. The V6 engine versions of Highlander came with four-wheel-drive plus extra goodies like a back-up camera, a power driver’s seat and fog lamps. The hybrid`s city/highway fuel economy, however, is rated (new five-cycle method) at 8.6 / 9.5 L/100km compared to 13.8 / 10.4
km/100km for the 3.5 litre V6. Highlander was included in a series of safety recalls (see list), including the famous “floor mat recall”, in response to mysterious
defect that supposedly caused unintended acceleration. A comfortable and secure all-weather family cruiser, the Toyota Highlander Continued on page 6

Safety Recalls: 2008 to 2013 Toyota Highlander: 2008: The driver's side power window master switch could stick or become inoperative. Dealers will inspect the driver's power window master switch and apply special grease that inhibits heat build-up, or replace the power window master switch circuit board, as necessary. 2008: Side curtain airbag roll angle sensors may fail. If one roll angle sensor malfunctions, the airbag warning lamp will illuminate and the roll detection system will be suspended. If both roll angle sensors fail simultaneously, the curtain shield airbag and the seatbelt pre-tensioner could inadvertently deploy. Dealers will replace the airbag sensor assembly. 2008: The seatbelt mechanism for the third row seat may revert from its Emergency Locking Retractor (ELR) mode to its Automatic Locking Retractor (ALR) mode, while installing a Child Restraint. Dealers will install a newly designed seatbelt component free of charge. 2008: The seat track, located on the inboard side of the left second row seat, may not fully lock in the forward first and second adjustment positions. Dealers will affect repairs. 2008 – 2010: Electrical circuitry in the steering wheel assembly may become damaged and the driver's airbag may not function as intended and the instrument panel airbag warning lamp may illuminate. Dealers will replace the spiral cable assembly. 2008 - 2010: If a Toyota optional accessory "tray-type" 2104 GMC TERRAIN AWD SLT floor mat is not secured by retaining hooks, or is placed LEATHER, LANE DEPARTURE on top of an existing floor mat, it may move forward WARNING, FRONT COLLISION and interfere with the accelerator pedal. Owners were ALERT AND MORE notified to remove the "tray-type" floor mats and given a reimbursement. SAVINGS $$11,386 2008 - 2010: The accelerator pedal may become stuck in the wide-open position due to an unsecured or incompatible driver's floor mat. Dealers will reconfigure the shape of the accelerator pedal, modify the floor underneath the STK# GT4577 accelerator pedal and/or install a brake override system.
