Ain’t life amazing? Canadian rocker Kim Mitchell finds himself balncing his music, a career in radio and his leaf-blowing, snow-piling neighbours Steven Heywood News staff

hands-free phone system going (we hope) and the sound of his turn signal ticks away on a couple of occasions during the interview. The Canadian rocker is heading for home — and has a few choice words for his neighbours, or at least the people they hired to blow leaves and grass out of their yard. And right onto his car. Hence the trip to the car wash. It reminds him of the time when another neighbour was pushing snow from their yard and it ended up in front of his driveway. It’s a little slice of Mitchell’s life these days and, he says, he really doesn’t mind his neighbours at all. After all, he’s got the guitar and the amp and he’s not afraid to seek revenge at 11 o’clock at night — if it’s absolutely necessary.
But where were we? Oh, yes. Mitchell is coming to Sidney’s Mary Winspear Centre’s Bodine Hall on June 4. It’s one of only three western Canadian shows he has on his plate at the moment, as he balances his music, a 10-year career on a Toronto radio station and family life. “I have a busy life,” he told the PNR. “There’s a radio show, my dog and I’m raising my children, and I’m just a single guy trying to look after my house.” Taking a back seat to that, somewhat, is writing music. Mitchell says he’s at the point in his music career where he wants to enjoy himself on stage and put on some great live shows in smaller venues across Canada. He says he’s not writing much new material — noting he has a backlog of songs that have never seen the light of day. “I have a ton of stuff that I’ve never recorded. There’s some acoustic stuff in there, some if it’s pretty mellow.” Mitchell says music can be a tough job and the game has changed so much these days.
