Shopper takes down thief mid-break-in A man returning to his car at Tillcum Centre last Friday found a would-be thief sitting in his passenger seat and held the suspect until police arrived.

Around 7:30 p.m. in the upper parking lot, the victim returned to his unlocked vehicle to find a man sitting in the passenger seat and stuffing items into a bag.

The quick-acting car owner moved to the passenger side of his vehicle, removed the suspect and told him to sit on the pavement, where the suspect stayed until police arrived.

A 29-year-old Victoria man is facing charges of theft under $5,000. Police also discovered other stolen goods when they searched the suspect.

Saanich Police, once again, is reminding vehicle owners to lock their doors, “even if they are only going to be parked for short periods of time,” said Sgt. Steve Eassie.

Deliberate fires set on Shelbourne St. Saanich police officers now have a man in custody after two small fires were set around Shelbourne Street and Cedar Hill Cross Road on Sunday.

The first fire was started on a picnic table around 9:10 a.m. directly across the street from the A&W Restaurant. Another fire was reported burning on the street, a six-foot strip that appeared to have been started by an

accelerent, said Sgt. Steve Eassie.

“Witnesses were successful in dousing the picnic bench with water to extinguish the blaze prior to the arrival of emergency responders,” Eassie said.

Saanich Police have arrested a 38 year old male in connection with a series of small fire related incidents that occurred on Sunday, June 21.

Glass pieces were recovered from the centre of the road near the site of the second fire.

“It was believed that an accelerant would have been contained within the bottle prior to these incidents,” Eassie said.

A 38-year-old man was arrested later that day in possession of a partially burned Bible and police are recommending arson charges.

Rick Firestone holds a five-pound rock he found on the floor inside the Saanich Fusion clubhouse on Tuesday morning. The garden rock was launched through the window into the clubhouse hall, spraying shards of glass.

The incident is only the latest in a string of vandalism at Tyndall Park.

Man in stolen car caught while sleeping A man found sleeping in a stolen car with a stolen licence plate is facing charges after Saanich police nabbed him in the early hours on Tuesday.

Police received a call about a suspicious male in the 3900-block of Interurban Rd., near Grange Road. Just after 1 a.m., police discovered the car had been reported stolen from the West Shore June 20. The rear license plate of the vehicle was also stolen.

A 24-year-old man was taken into custody without incident in possession of a knife and bear spray.

He faces charges of possession of property obtained by crime under $5,000, possession of break-in instruments, possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose, and failure to comply with a probation order. editor@saanichnews.com

Vandals return to soccer clubhouse Travis Paterson News staff

The ongoing plague of petty vandalism at Saanich Fusion FC clubhouse has now reached 18 months and counting.

On Tuesday morning, longtime Fusion volunteer Rick Firestone was walking his dog past the clubhouse when he discovered two windows had been heavily damaged.

“I saw this (large) stone sitting (at the base) of this door and noticed the window (smashed up),” Firestone said. “It’s ridiculous, when is this going to stop? If it’s youth, then I’m just wondering when are they going to grow up (and stop doing this)?”

It was clear the window of the door had been repeatedly bashed by the stone, as many as eight times by Firestone’s estimate. The stone, which was removed by Saa-

nich municipal staff, weighed somewhere between 30 and 40 pounds and had blue ingrained on it from the door’s paint. Because it was safety glass it did not buckle or allow entry.

The second window, along the wall of the clubhouse, however, bore a hole about 35 centimetres in diameter where a rock had been launched through it.

Firestone found the rock about 4.5 metres inside the clubhouse.

Shards of glass were strewn in every direction.

“It’s frustrating that this is still ongoing,” said Fusion president Barrie Keefe, who’s been responding to vandalism at the clubhouse since Christmas of 2013.

On Monday night at about 11 p.m., six Saanich Police officers swarmed a nearby residence on San Juan Avenue in response to a live break and enter call that turned out to be a

false alarm. Sgt. Steve Eassie said police located a person who was not suspicious. However, the club is asking neighbours to keep their eyes and ears open to anything abnormal around the clubhouse.

Earlier this year, in March, a reward of $1,000 was posted by Sidney-based Scoremaster Goals to anyone who can offer information that leads to an arrest regarding Tyndall Park vandalism.

Since December of 2013, the artificial turf has been sliced, goal nets have been slashed, park signs have been defaced with foul language, garbage has been strewn around and, on one account, a clubhouse equipment room was entered and about 50 soccer balls were found spread across the grounds.

“We’re just hoping neighbours can be vigilant and report anything suspicious they see,” Keefe said. reporter@saanichnews.com

Police watchdog closes file on Atwell’s complaints Daniel Palmer News staff

B.C.’s Police Complaint Commissioner is closing the books on Saanich Mayor Richard Atwell’s complaints about a spyware investigation and allegations of his own municipality’s police department leaked information about a 911 call.

Commissioner Stan Lowe issued a statement Tuesday that revealed former B.C. Attorney General Wally Oppal had been brought in to oversee a dispute resolution process between Atwell and Saanich PD that lasted four months. Talks ultimately broke down on May 15.

Atwell’s complaints related to Saanich PD Chief Bob Downie’s conclusions in December there had been no criminal wrongdoing with the installation and use of Spector 360, an employee monitoring software tool installed on Atwell’s computer when he assumed office.

Atwell asked the OPCC to investigate whether a conflict of interest existed in that investigation, as Downie’s wife and Atwell’s executive assistant, Jennifer Downie, used a computer targeted by the spyware.

Atwell had also filed a complaint through his lawyer after media reports emerged from a Dec. 11 incident in which Atwell called 911 and Saanich Police responded.

Atwell had hoped the OPCC would recommend an outside police force review the incidents.

“In arriving at our determination, it is important that the public understand that the complaint made by Mayor Atwell was treated no differently than any other complaint received from a member

of the public,” Lowe said in a statement.

“The Commissioner regrets the lengthy delay in arriving at our admissibility determination in this case as the complaint by Mayor Atwell was made on January 12, 2015, through his legal counsel.

It is important that the public is made aware that a substantial portion of this delay can be accounted for by a prolonged attempt to resolve this matter between the parties through voluntary Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR).”

Lowe reveals that Oppal oversaw a dispute resolution process over a four-month period, and that the process came to “an unsuccessful end” on May 15.

On May 19, the OPCC continued with its admissibility assessment, “in which we sought further information from Mayor Atwell, and examined materials received from a number of sources, including the investigative findings of the Information and Privacy Commissioner on a related matter,” Lowe continued.

“Based on the information we have received to date, we have determined Mayor Atwell’s complaints against members of the Saanich Police Department are inadmissible as they do not constitute misconduct as defined pursuant to the Police Act of British Columbia. Mayor Atwell has been provided a more detailed written explanation of our decision.”

Monday: We’re off with a bang as a one-vote majority on council snuffs out the possibility of letting its regional partners take even a momentary peek at what many considered a viable sewage treatment site. It was Watkiss NO Way for several politicians who had sat on the zombie-like CRD committee that helped flush $60 million down the sewage pipes of a failed plan at McLoughlin Point.

Tuesday: the Office of the B.C. Police Complaint Commissioner reveals that even mediation rockstar Wally Oppal can’t get Mayor Richard Atwell and Police Chief Bob Downie singing kumbaya over a burning stack of failed complaints. A review? No one needs a detailed review. Wally Oppal’s got this ... or uh ... never mind. Case closed!

Meanwhile, Atwell and the other bigwigs get gussied up for a summertime dip down at the ol’ swimming hole.

Wednesday: Now we’re into the stuff of legend. Saanich’s interim CAO Andy Laidlaw finally releases his in-house report on the spyware scandal, providing an incredible twist for employees who find themselves in a sticky situation. Laidlaw’s consultant, Brian Simmons, re-introduces the term “corporate decision” into the lexicon of local government. This bold new decision-making approach goes something like this: If everyone thinks and acts equally incompetently, then no one’s to blame! It’s too simplistic to point fingers. Sewage site rejection ‘paternalistic’ Re: Saanich council rejects Watkiss Way sewage site in tight vote, saanichnews.com (June 23) Monday night’s Saanich council meeting displayed, yet again, how long term, entrenched councillors, are not interested in public participation in important decisions because they think they know best.

A proposal to add a possible sewage treatment site for consideration by the core group was voted down.

Councillors expounded at length on matters for which they had no expertise.

They insisted they did know better than an engineer who was present.

One councillor even stated that “the pipes would be so big you could drive a Smartcar through them.

Absolute nonsense.

All that was asked was for the site to be put to the engineering tests that other proposed sites will be put to. But they denied that possibility because of their paternalistic ideas that “We know best”.

Any possibility of public input, discussion, or comment was shut down by this decision. So much

for openness, accountability and transparency.

Saanich failed region on open dialogue promise

A month ago some concerned residents questioned the objectivity of information presented in the Eastside Technically Feasible Site Profiles released for discussion at roundtable meetings. Officials reassured us “that interrogating this information in a public setting, is the best thing that can happen. ... it happens at the table, in real time, in front of the public.”

We were encouraged by this bold response, participated in the discussions along with many others and provided our feedback – believing once again in the integrity of the process. Now a majority of Saanich council has voted against a motion to consider a potential site on Watkiss Way put forward by its owner. This rejection is unfathomable! The reasons for denying the public its say flying

in the face of the arguments made earlier for open and honest dialogue.

While I am opposed to a large single regional treatment plant, I believe this site should have been considered for the multitude of other opportunities it offered. This did not have to be a centralized facility with large pipes coming from downtown Victoria – it could have been a smaller distributed facility receiving sewage just from the Craigflower and Marigold pump stations; it could have been the site for a gasification and energy conversion site receiving residual solids from other treatment plants as well as organics; it could have been a demonstration site for the reuse of reclaimed resources from tertiary treatment facilities and a profitable vegetable operation.

Unfortunately this ill-considered decision by a few Saanich councilors has again denied the residents of this region the opportunity to consider innovative, forward-looking, broadscope, outside-the-box solutions to our sewage problems.

Spyware was ‘corporate decision,’ says report News staff

An in-house report released Wednesday into the use of spyware at the District of Saanich admits senior staff failed to consider privacy concerns, but stops short of blaming any individual staff members for its improper use.

The report, completed by interim CAO Andy Laidlaw, used findings from Brian Simmons, a contracted labour relations consultant, to answer questions put forward by Saanich council about the use of Spector 360, an employee monitoring tool.

The software was covertly installed on the computer of Mayor Richard Atwell and on 12 other workstations at the District on Dec. 2, 2014 and was disabled on Jan. 21 after B.C.’s privacy commissioner launched an investigation into its use.

Simmons concluded that there was no evidence to “support a claim that Atwell’s computer was targeted” by the employee monitoring software, and said he found “no evidence that would single out any particular individual in this matter,

rather it was a corporate decision.

“Finding no evidence of malfeasance, I find no cause to terminate or discipline any employee,” Simmons wrote in his June 20 report.

Privacy Commissioner Elizabeth Denham released a scathing report into the District’s improper use of Spector 360 on March 30, in which she said senior staff failed to consider privacy standards before approving its use. Denham also found senior staff failed to notify Atwell about the software’s installation on his computer, and noted “the District’s submissions to my office demonstrate a deep lack of understanding about the most basic tenets of the (Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy) Act, such as what constitutes the collection of personal information.”

Denham also concluded that Director of Corporate Services, Laura Ciarniello, gave the express approval to install the spyware.

In a statement, Laidlaw said his report is intended to bring closure to the spyware scandal for both council and staff.

“Decisions were made by the

senior management in the best interests of protecting Saanich’s information and technology system,” Laidlaw said.

“The implementation lacked a review through the lens of (the Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act) because the software was being viewed purely as an additional security installation.”

Laidlaw agreed that Denham was right when she called out the municipality for failing to complete a “privacy impact assessment,” which should have led senior staff to reconsider Spector 360’s invasive functions like keystroke logging and screenshot recordings.

“In my opinion, there was a systemic disconnect within the organization on the issue of personal privacy,” Laidlaw said.

“I recognize that Council has a need for accountability, however, it would be simplistic and inaccurate to point to some decision or event.”

The internal report also reveals five IT staff resigned and one retired between December 2014 and May 2015.

“Judy Brownoff seems to be a big advocate of not doing anything in Saanich, but she was all in favour of cramming McLoughlin down the Esquimalt mayor’s throat. Now, she can’t even put up her site in a public process. That, to me, is not what you’re elected for.”

The CRD’s $788-million Seaterra program came to a halt in April 2014 after Esquimalt council rejected rezoning for a wastewater treatment facility at McLoughlin Point along the Inner Harbour entrance.

After last November’s municipal elections, the CRD established the Eastside Select Committee, a regional group comprised of regional CRD directors and staff from Victoria, Oak Bay and Saanich who are responsible for evaluating the most publicly acceptable and technically feasible sites for sewage treatment. A similar Westside Committee is comprised of officials from Esquimalt, Langford, Colwood, View Royal and the Songhees Nation.

The committees have already shortlisted sites across the CRD, but had asked private land owners to submit property for evaluation before June 24. The Eastside group required private landowners to get approval from their local council before forwarding land for consideration; no such submission restriction existed at the Westside Committee.

Responding to some of Young’s criticism, Brownoff said it was “unfortunate” Langford’s mayor had spoken out on the matter. She said the Watkiss Way site had already been rejected by the CRD board prior to last November’s election after a “high-level analysis” was done. (Saanich News could not immediately confirm when this CRD decision was made.)

“Some of the challenges around this site is you have to collect all the raw sewage from the harbour area where we collect it and pipe and pump it up to this site,” Brownoff said.

“One of our Official Community Plan policies is if we want to open the (Urban Containment Boundary), we must go to referendum or plebiscite of our residents,” she said.

Young said the CRD has already spent around $100 million on the sewage treatment project and achieved very little. He said the Westside and Eastside committees were established “to get the professionals, not politicians, who know what they’re doing to evaluate the site and then bring it forward.”

“The site may not have merit or be picked, but the public has the right to know. You don’t get five politicians together and say, ‘This is no good,’” said Young, referring to the majority vote at Saanich council to reject the site.

“Sure it’s ALR, but it’s in the middle of a forested area, it’s near an interchange, we have residual use for green initiatives right there, and it’s not too small like McLoughlin. This site could do everything on that site and virtually nobody would even see the building.”

Peter Ferguson, an engineer who did preliminary evaluative work on the Watkiss Way site for Vandekerkove, told council the site contained ample space for both wastewater treatment and biosolids processing facilities. Ray Parks of BIM Consulting, also speaking in the interest of Vandekerkove, said VGH had expressed interest in harvesting recovered heat and gas from the sewage treatment process. Parks added that a greenhouse operator had also expressed interest in partnering on the project to use recovered heat.

Coun. Colin Plant noted at the council meeting that sewage treatment sites have already been built on ALR land in both Sooke and on the Saanich Peninsula, and said council should keep an open mind until it has more information. The CRD voted in 2006 to not consider ALR land for the core area sewage treatment facilities.

Young said rather than use the “lame excuse” of protecting ALR land, Saanich should analyze the site “from a viability option.”

“Why would you make a decision that takes out a site with good partners like the hospital for heat recovery and greenhouse production. It does have some merit. If it fails the test, at least the public won’t ask the question about it later. Then we as politicians are very transparent,” he said.

Before the vote was taken on Monday, Atwell had the final word in council chambers: “I think this site has huge potential and this will be a watershed moment in the creation of our sewage project. … This council will essentially be responsible for eliminating an option for the public.”

Voting in favour of the Watkiss Way site for consideration were Atwell, Haynes, Plant and Wergeland.

Great Teachers honoured Three local teachers are getting an ‘A’ for their unique teaching styles and dedication to education.

Karen Oraas from Doncaster Elementary, Caroline Shuh from Bayside Middle School and Parker Jolliffe from Esquimalt High School were the recipients of this year’s Black Press/Staples Great Teachers program recognizing outstanding teachers in the community.

Colleagues, friends and families of the recipients plus representatives from Black Press and major sponsors Staples, Thrifty Foods and Drivewise celebrated the three teachers and their accomplishments at the Staples store on Tolmie Avenue Tuesday night.

“It was inspirational to meet with our honourees face to face and hear about all the wonderful things they’re doing to give back to the kids in our communities,” said Oliver Sommer Associate Group Publisher, Black Press.

Each honouree received a plaque and an iPad courtesy of Staples.

If you were to attend any of the major manufacturer media launches, you would hear journo after journo complain about the audacity of carmakers who use CVT. In the old days, CVT deserved its poor reputation with power lags, high revving, uneven gearing and unedifying and unexpected lurches forward! The technology has evolved. And, the fact is the average consumer has no problem with it, liking the smoother transitions.

My first test route was in the Whistler area and showed off its hill climbing skills and the smoothness of the ‘dreaded’ CVT. It’s no gazelle but it is sure-footed and the CVT did not fail even when the driver behaved like a lead foot!

I found the ride to be smooth and highway passing no challenge. Cornering at sensible speeds keeps the vehicle firmly planted. It’s darn quiet too.

Then I spent a week tooling around

the city putting it through its shopping paces. Parking on the street was a little challenging but I’ll put that down to impatient drivers behind, not prepared for the Murano’s wide swing needed to get into that tricky spot. On the supermarket lot, it glided into spaces forwards or backwards with ease.

It’s a fine long-distance vehicle but would serve well as a commuter where longer distances are the norm. I can see it being used in the suburbs but it’s a bit large for the centre of the city.

The Murano is not too thirsty for its size – 11.2/8.3 L/100 kms. That’s about two litres per 100 klicks better than its main rivals.

Premium brand Infiniti will unveil its first-ever compact car at the International Motor Show in Frankfurt in September this year (September 17 to 27).

Two years after the Infiniti Q30 Concept debuted at the 2013 Frankfurt show, the production version of this segment-spanning compact car will be revealed at the show this year.

Infiniti is in the final stages of preparing the launch. Dynamic testing and ultimate validation is currently taking place across the UK and throughout mainland Europe where development of the vehicle has been completed at

the company's Engineering Centre in Cranfield, in north-east England, since 2014.

The Q30 will go on sale in Europe towards the end of 2015 with other markets to follow subsequently. More news on the Infiniti Q30 active compact will be released closer to the Frankfurt show in September.

The road to production for this much-anticipated car has been rocky though not for what might be expected reasons. Its design and engineering development has the fingerprints of four-times F1 Champion Sebastian Vettel all over it.

Then Infiniti President Johan de Nysschen announced the car alongside Vettel, who was wearing his Infiniti-Red Bull F1 team shirt for the occasion. Since then the president has headed over to GM to run Cadillac and Vettel has joined the Ferrari F1 team.

After chatting to Vettel, there’s no doubt in the mind of yours truly that he will want to get a turn at the wheel of a Q30 production car to see just how much of his advice was accepted.

Local businesses launch Think Local rewards What is the value of shopping locally?

Plenty for the greater community – and starting tomorrow there’ll be even more rewards for shoppers.

The Think Local First program asks local consumers to allocate a portion of their spending to independent local businesses. Starting Saturday, June 27, those shoppers can also sign up to receive rewards as a thank you.

Saturday – Join the Shift Day – is designed to boost consumer awareness about the Ten Percent Shift and the brand new Think Local First Rewards.

The Ten Per Cent Shift asks people to start by shifting just 10 per cent of their household spending to local, independent businesses; the spin-offs from that will help support and grow a thriving and vibrant local economy.

Twenty-six businesses are currently participating in the rewards program, ranging from bakeries and breweries to outdoor adventure stores and chiropractors, with more joining weekly.

“It very much reflects our values of supporting local and independent businesses,” says Russ Benwell, from Red Barn Markets, which is launching the rewards program in its Vanalman location but expects to expand to its other locations in the next few weeks.

“With the rewards program, we really like the fact that we can promote each other, too,” Benwell says, noting that the program will also allow member businesses to work together to create special promotions and value-added initiatives.

“I’m really excited that we can support local businesses and keep tax dollars here that continue to support the community.”

This Saturday, businesses will have stations to help people get started with their card or download the app. The Q will also be on location at Capitol Iron downtown, signing people up and giving away prizes.

Gayle Robinson, president of Think Local First and owner of Robinson’s Outdoor Store, says Think Local First isn’t about telling people not to shop at large chain stores, but rather to think about the local option more often. “The 10 per cent shift is about supporting local businesses when it makes sense for you. We are launching TLF Rewards to make this shift fun and rewarding.”

So how does it work?

Each time consumers shop at a participating local business they earn ‘Merits’ which can be redeemed for local products or services from any of the businesses on the program. Consumers can

pick up a TLF Rewards Card at any participating business or download the app. The app and website features a map showing all the independent businesses and keeps track of how many merits have been earned.

The program is powered by Supportland, a Portland-based organization whose mission is “to strengthen neighbourhood business districts that lead to thriving local economies.”

Simply visit Supportland.com to sign up and create an account with your first name, email and password. Once enrolled, start collecting: • Pick up a Think Local First (TLF) card at a participating business and add it to your account, then give the number to store clerks when making a purchase; • Download the Supportland app and “check in” when you make a purchase to let the staff know who you are; • or add your cell phone number to you account and give that to the clerk.

Super Saturday at Uptown centre The Superheroes of Victoria children’s charity is hosting its fifth annual Superhero Kids’ Day tomorrow (June 27) at Uptown Shopping Centre from 11 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

The Superhero-themed children's carnival is geared towards teaching kids about true local heroes such as police, fire fighters, ambulance, search and rescue, healthcare professionals and many more.

The Superheroes will be joined by a list of special guests from various charity groups, emergency services and mayors for the opening ceremony.

“We have superhero-themed games and activities, a cape and mask making station, face painting, relay races, a bouncy castle and special prizes for sharing a story about your favorite local hero,” said spokesperson Elizabeth Hall.

New this year is an Uptown Funk sing and dancealong with the Arthur Murray Dance Academy, an arts and crafts station courtesy of Michael’s, and a dunk tank featuring Victoria HarbourCats players.

A ballot will be drawn to win a Taylor Swift Package including hotel for two, meals, and two tickets to see Taylor Swift live at BC Place Stadium in Vancouver on Aug. 1.

The pain drivers feel at the pump from high gas prices may soon also come with a jolt of shame for helping destroy the planet.

A proposal gaining momentum with civic leaders in B.C. would see guilt-inducing climate change warning labels slapped on all gas pump handles.

The non-profit group Our Horizon has been advancing the concept on the basis that warnings that graphically show the damage from climate change could nudge motorists to cut their emissions.

It’s inspired by cigarette package

warnings that are credited in the decline of smoking and the example warning labels circulated by the group are similar in design.

“Warning: Use of this fuel product contributes to ocean acidification which puts much marine life at risk of extinction,” states one label that comes with images of thriving and dead coral.

West Vancouver council will bring a resolution before the Union of B.C. Municipalities in September asking the province to make the pump labels a requirement provincewide.

City of North Vancouver council voted to endorse the idea June 15 and it doesn’t want to wait for a provincial government decision.

“We’re going to try to go it alone,” Mayor Darrell Mussatto said, adding North Vancouver still must investigate the

Our Horizon B.C. campaigner Matt Hulse said he believes any municipality could make gas pump labeling a condition for gas stations in its local business licence bylaw.

But West Vancouver Mayor Mike Smith, a longtime petroleum distributor in the region, said he doesn’t want to take the risk that a unilateral municipal requirement gets challenged in court.

“I personally hate spending public money on legal fees,” he said, adding his city will wait for provincial policy.

Smith said he will vote in favour of his council’s resolution at UBCM. “It’s just a way of reminding the public that there’s a cost to be borne for using petroleum products,” Smith said.

“Nobody’s advocating banning them. But you should be aware when you fill your car up that there’s an effect on the climate and on the environment of doing that.”

He called the suggested labels innocuous and doesn’t believe the oil industry would object.

No jurisdiction in Canada has yet made pump warning labels a requirement.

Hulse said the labels would help make the routine act of filling up the tank a choice to be considered more carefully.

A Victoria condominium strata council is one of the first on Vancouver Island to install solar panels on its building’s roof – all out of residents’ pockets.

Residents of Central Park Strata (909 Pembroke St.) recently voted to spend their own money to install 60 solar electric panels on the roof of the four-storey apartment building, which started generating power for some 100 residents this month.

“We wanted to join the solar revolution. There’s clearly a need for more local energy generation. It’s a beautiful building for solar panels because it has a flat roof and absolutely no shade,” said Bruce Mackenzie, president of the Central Park Strata.

As part of the $48,000 project, each suite pays on average $735.

The electricity generated from the grid-tied panels feed into the strata’s electrical panel and have a maximum capacity of 14.7 kilowatts.

On the first day of testing, the panels were already generating 11.2 kilowatts.

“I’m very excited that it’s working, it’s been several months of planning and it’s lovely to have it running,” he said.

It was Mackenzie who originally brought forward the idea of installing solar panels at a strata annual general meeting three years ago.

“I just asked for a show of hands if anyone would be interested in solar power and almost everyone said, ‘We’re interested. Find out more’,” he said.

But the idea really took off in October, when the price of solar panels dropped, making it more economical.

“Quite a lot of the owners in this building are environmentally conscious. They are green, they are looking for a sense of what can we do to reduce or bills, but at the same time look after the environment,” she said.

“The consensus of the owners was that it’s just the right thing to do.”

Mackenzie noted there aren’t any major downsides to switching to solar power and hopes other con-

dominiums will consider switching too.

“There are dozens of similar buildings all over Vancouver Island and the (Lower Mainland) too, which could do just the same thing,” Mackenzie said.

The residents expect panels will generate about 16,000 kilowatt hours per year and save them $2,100 off the strata’s $6,000 electrical bill every year as well. editor@saanichnews.com

In local lacrosse action, the Saanich Tigers midget A lacrosse team hosts Campbell River this Saturday, June 27 starting at noon at Pearkes Recreation Centre. On Sunday, the Tigers’ midget B boys play host to Juan de Fuca starting at 12 p.m., also at Pearkes.

The Sailors Field Hockey Club is also hosting drop-in sessions all summer long at the University of Victoria turf field. Anyone 14 years of age or older is welcome to come tryout field hockey with some of Victoria’s best coaches and players. Dropins cost $5 per session for 90 minutes of skills and drills.

The Victoria Horseshoe Club is hosting an open house today (June 26) from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m., a chance for players to come see what the sport is all about and try out horseshoes, with games for many different age groups.

In swimming action, Saanich Commonwealth Place hosts the 2015 SwimBC AAA LC Championships Thursday, July 2 through Sunday, July 5.

Local baseball action heats up with Saanich’s Victoria Eagles junior premier squad taking on cross-town rivals the Mariners, Tuesday, June 30 at Henderson Park. First pitch is 6 p.m.

The midget AAA Eagles are also in action this week, hosting Cowichan Valley at Lambrick Park for a doubleheader. The games will start at 12 p.m. and 3 p.m.

At the Premier Baseball League level, the Mariners

lace up their cleats against the White Rock Tritons on Saturday, July 4. The games will start at 1 p.m. and 3:30 p.m. at Henderson ball park.

White Rock will head to Lambrick Park Sunday for a match-up with the Eagles on Sunday, July 5.

In college-age baseball, the Victoria HarbourCats will be hosting the Wenatchee Apple Sox this coming weekend at Royal Athletic Park.

The ‘Cats start at 6:35 p.m. on Friday and Saturday, and 1:05 p.m. on Sunday. Coming up, the HarbourCats will also play host to the Langley Blaze premier boys in exhibition play June 30. First pitch will be 6:35 p.m.

One local cricket game on the calendar for the Victoria and District Cricket League this week, when United will host Metchosin for a 12:30 p.m. start at Beacon Hill Park.

“It’s actually the second time (winning then Denver Shootout),” said Reisig, “we have won it unofficially years ago during the tourney’s earlier days, before it had a trophy.”

Claremont also sent a “grad 2017” team made of Grade 10 and 11 players, though the results were less than desirable.

“The (junior) results were not quite the way they planned but a really good experience for them,” Reisig said.

“Honestly, the Grade 12 group that just won had the same experience two years ago as this junior team, so we expect them to grow just like anyone else.”

Denver is the latest from a strong season of touring success. In November the Spartans enjoyed an incredible tour of Baltimore and New York,

going 7-1-1 over the nine games played. In December they went undefeated at the Space Needle Championship, going 6-0. In March they repeated as provincial champions for 2015 with McCulley earning the provincial tournament MVP award, winning the final in overtime over New Westminster, 4-1.

Nine of the graduating Claremont lacrosse players will play in the NCAA next year on scholarships: Marshal King and David Byrne (Drexel University), Eddie Smith and Brad McCulley (Robert Morris University), Tyler Mace and Braylon Lumb (University of District of Columbia), Pascal Coombs (Mercer University), and Danny Smith and Alec Molander are soon to commit but yet to be confirmed. reporter@saanichnews. com

Saanich’s Falcon Gymnastics sent 13 gymnasts to Kelowna earlier this month to compete in the 2015 Ogopogo Invitational and Trials for the Western Canada Summer Games.

The Falcon crew earned 15 medals in what capped the end of their competitive season.

Saanich results: Junior Olympic Level 6 (Jr. B): Jaidyn Olynyk earned Silver medal for Vault, Silver on Bars and Silver Floor. Junior Olympic Level 6 (Jr. A): Leonie Solomons earned Bronze on Bars and Silver on Beam.

Playing year round in Saanich’s conditions benefited the team as the tournament endured stormy conditions.

Some games were limited to 30 and 40 minutes.

The Spartan senior team won all three round robin games, outscoring the opponents 43-7 (by Reisig’s recount). Some of the games were chopped down to 30 or 40 minutes due to the rain.

Regulation games are four 15-minute quarters.

The Spartans won a shortened semifinal 5-2 over Colorado Elite, then handled Colorado 3D All Star team in the final only to give the game away.
