Co-op plans new pumps in Sidney Peninsula Co-op’s latest move a return to roots Tim Collins News contributor

While for some the opening of a new gas station in Sidney may not merit more than a cursory observation that it may increase competition and convenience in the area, for Peninsula Co-op’s General Manager Dave Hoy it is much, much more. After all, he’s worked within the co-op business model for his entire professional career and he’s a fervent supporter of that business model and the benefits that he believes arise from its operations. That’s why he’s thrilled to confirm Phioto contributed that Peninsula Co-op Peninsula Co-op’s growth is in the process of in the region began in 1977. reviving the one time site of a now defunct gas station (Chevron during the 1960s and ‘70s), located at the corner of McDonald Park Road and Pat Bay Highway. The new gas station will include a 2,600 square foot convenience store, a state of the art touchless car wash and, of course, a series of gas pumps. For Peninsula Co-Op, the move signals a return to the region that spawned the company back in 1977 when a group of local residents on the Peninsula went door to door promoting the co-op business model to their friends and neighbours. The result was the opening of the Food Centre on Keating Cross Road. After some initial setbacks, the Co-op expanded into the fuel business with the installation of pumps at the Food Centre in the early 1980s. PleaSe See: Station site cleaned up, page 6

Tip of the Peninsula North Saanich business moves out

SAANICH — The brother and sister team behind emerging bioreactor manufacturing company Industrial Plankton has moved their company to Saanich. Industrial Plankton, owned by Ashley and Robert Roulston, builds high-tech algae incubators, helping large-scale fish farms produce their food in mass PNR file photo quantities. After Robert and Ashley about four years Roulston have moved of research and their high-tech development at a North Saanich site, company from North the company now Saanich into Saanich, offers its ingenuiseeking more room to tive 1,000-litre tank grow. for $32,000 U.S. and with a one-year warranty. The promising bioreactor concept has been widely recognized, earning prizes such as the $20,000 it won from the B.C. Bioenergy Network in 2013. Last week it was announced among a select list of companies to win a low-cost loan from the federal Western Innovation Initiative that provides repayable sums to small- and medium-sized enterprises in Western Canada.

weapons siezed after standoff Man arrested following three-hour negotiation Steven Heywood News staff

A former member of the Canadian Forces was arrested in Central Saanich Monday following a three-hour standoff with police. Central Saanich Police Service Deputy Chief Les Sylven says the region’s emergency response team and a crisis negotiator were called to a home on East Saanich Road after 4 p.m. They were called to the residence by the man’s wife, Sylven said, worried that her husband was distraught, suffering from Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and had weapons in the house. Sylven said with that knowledge, police had to follow its response protocol, which is to protect the public and its officers. “We deemed it to be a very high-risk situation.” The immediate area around the home was

The fact that there were weapons reported to be in the home, he continued, meant police had to take appropriate precautions. Sylven did not say if any weapons were actually used by the man, but police had to consider them in their response protocol. After the negotiator was able to convince the man, in his 30s, to come out of the house, Sylven said police

Mailboxes coming SIDNEY — Community mailboxes are coming to Sidney this fall. Canada Post’s Marnie Armstrong, director of municipal engagement, outlined the corporation’s plan at the Town of Sidney council meeting July 13. She said Canada Post plans to add 200,000 new addresses to its community mailbox system this year across Canada — including 3,300 residences and 59 businesses in Sidney. Armstrong said the installation of the mailboxes has already started and the switch from home delivery of mail will occur in the fall. — Steven Heywood/News staff

Literacy gets some air

S

aanich Peninsula Literacy has come up with a great idea — well, they stole it, really, but in a very friendly way — to encourage youngsters to pick up a book and read. This month, the organization has started hosting Open Air Libraries in Sidney at Beacon Park. Volunteers with SPL roll in with decorated suitcases full of donated books. The program is free and the children can take a book home with them — and they do not have to bring it back. But if they do, great, and they can pick another. As the organizers say, they are trying to encourage people — especially children — to leave technology behind for a few minutes, and enjoy reading, or We think it’s being read to, in the great outdoors. important to And so far, SPL encourage better has had some of the best possible literacy weather for an open air book event. The level of support they have received for their Open Air Library is tremendous — from donors of books great and small, to the in-kind contributions of the Town of Sidney to help make it happen. As a community newspaper, we think it’s important to encourage better literacy and critical thinking among youth (and among adults of any age as well). After all, we would like to see strong generations of readers and thinkers as much as parents and groups like Saanich Peninsula Literacy do. The result is better opportunities for education and personal growth over a lifetime — even the chance for non-readers to get the skills they need to be able to open up a breadth of experience. Our society relies on literacy on many levels, and efforts to improve that among young children help to ensure adults know what’s going on around them, what to look for when they need help and how to approach many issues with a critical eye and the ability to ask questions. It also helps ensure people can read what passes their eyes on new technology. All of this, and it all starts with the opening of reading material and a turning of its pages. What do you think? Where will the shoppers come from? Re: Suggested Sidney Gateway retail centre (PNR July 22). It is foolish to think that a shopping centre at the highway and Beacon Avenue will enhance the Sidney business community. True it may infuse a few dollars into the Town’s treasury but that will be more than offset by the loss of tax income from existing businesses when they close. One must not forget the mandate of the Victoria Airport Authority is to maximize income and keep airport costs down. If that can be accomplished in lockstep with Sidney, all well and good — if not, so be it. There is only one beneficiary of this scheme — the Airport Authority. Where are the shoppers going to come from for this project? Not ferry arrival passengers who want to get home, or go to Butchart Gardens or wherever. Not the people going to the ferry. People from the Islands? That’s unlikely — why come here when they can go to Duncan more easily? People from Saanich and Victoria? I think not; they’ve got more choice where they live. So who’s left to patronize this new shopping facility — customers who currently shop in Sidney. With the so-called expansion of the shopping choices, what we really have is duplication of what already exists, which means dilution and spread of consumer dollars over a larger number of retailers. Canada is littered with small main street towns devastated by on the border shopping centres. Sidney should not be one of them. Have I got a vested interest in this matter? You’re darn right I have —

35 years of time and effort in creating Canada’s only Booktown and like most of the other retailers in Sidney, I’m not encouraged by the suggestion to expand outside our present ‘this side of the highway’ limits. Clive Tanner Sidney

Build more retail in downtown Sidney Greg Stevens is right (PNR letters, July 22), this project has misplaced scope and timing. It would benefit the VAA greatly, but would come at the expense of Sidney’s struggling business community. With another non-existent tourist

season, Sidney is struggling to bring in non-local shoppers, which is the back bone of our survival. Like Christmas is for some businesses, summer pays for the rest of our year. If we can’t pay for the year, the owners pay out of pocket to continue to support Sidney. If the VAA gets its way, that retail space will just be filled with nonlocal franchises. If they were smart, they’d just buy some retail buildings in Sidney. Noel Gagnon Sidney

Play nice together Re: Pickleball lines on tennis courts. I have never written a letter to a paper before, but feel strongly on this issue as I have been so surprised there is a controversy on adding pickleball lines on tennis courts in Sidney and North Saanich. I am amazed the councils seem to be allowing a small group of individuals who feel entitled to monopolize the courts dictate to them on this issue. To me it is an issue of fairness to all taxpayers. I hope the two councils will take another look at the situation and realize we are all taxpayers who paid for these courts and are deserving of equal access. We are all adults and can play on the same surfaces. Pickleball is a growing sport so this is not a new issue for communities. To suggest tennis players cannot play on a court with another different coloured set of lines is to insult their intelligence. Leslie Walts North Saanich

Dr. Muirhead I don’t want to but I think I need a tooth pulled. What are my options? Nowadays we seem to have lots of options for everything in our lives and the same is true for your tooth. Just a quick walk through Sidney gives you plenty of choices to grab “a bite”. Some of my favourites these days are “No. 15” at Sabhai Thai, Peruvian Empanadas at Jumping Bean Express, and the Dill Roast Beef Sandwich at Stonestreet Cafe. In fact, we’ve never had more options at our disposal for saving or replacing missing teeth. This is good news because when you lose a tooth there are several consequences—the bigs ones being loss of digestive chewing power, jaw bone loss, and problems with the neighbouring teeth. What problems you say? Eventual cavities on the now exposed roots of the neighbour teeth, moving and shifting of the teeth into empty tooth space, and bone/gum loss around these teeth. The shifting alters your bite, makes the teeth harder to clean and a domino effect ensues. Many people who lose one tooth tend to lose additional teeth. Sensitivity and your appearance changing are common. Sometimes we might be tempted to think, “But I’ve got lots of teeth!” But would you forego a finger or toe permanently?

In terms of saving your existing teeth we now have materials and techniques that allow us to keep more teeth than we previously thought possible. You may be pleasantly surprised when you come in that we can save some of the blackest and snaggliest looking of teeth and turn them into pearly whites again. But if your tooth can’t be saved then what? Fortunately there are now several predictable options for tooth replacement. The best option is to replace the tooth, the same day as the tooth comes out, with a tooth implant. This method has been proven to minimize bone loss, not to mention your future appointments and overall costs—and not just your immediate implant related costs but your lifetime costs in that area of your mouth. Why is it often the best biological and financial option? Because an implant closely replicates your tooth, tends to last a lifetime, and is totally immune to cavities. My observations and research have shown that an implant placed the same day as the tooth is taken out also significantly reduces healing time and pain. Why? Because we have filled the hole left by the tooth the same day we made it. This just works too well. There are other time honoured options as well which we will discuss in the next two articles— bridges and dentures. Butchart Gardens unveiled a large bronze and granite dragon in its Waterwheel Square in June, a gift from the People’s Republic of China and Suzhou, Victoria’s sister city. The gifting of the sculpture was done in conjunction with the 35th anniversary of the sister-city relationship between Victoria and Suzhou. There to unveil the sculpture was Butchart Gardens owner Robin Clarke, Sheng Lei, vice-mayor of the City of Suzhou and Liu Fei, consul general of the People’s Republic of China. Many government officials were also there from Suzhou along with the Mayor of Victoria and Central Saanich and lieutenant-governor of B.C., Judith Guichon to witness the unveiling with many others, during a private ceremony. “It’s a fabulous honour for us to have received this gift,” said Dale Ryan, Butchart Garden’s director of public relations, sales and marketing. “We’ve always had a very close relationship with the people from the country, from the People’s Republic of China and so we were very, very honoured to receive this gift.” Sitting atop a carved granite base, the granite and bronze fountain measures two metres high by three meters long, weighing in at around 2,700 kilograms. The dragon is in a temporary garden that will stand until the end of summer. A new, permanent location is being looked at in the Gardens next year. reporter@peninsulanewsreview.com

On the Gardens’ stage

Butchart Gardens has a big summer entertainment lineup in July and August. Some of the artists include David Vest on July 27, Chris Millington & Dancin’ on July 29 and The Dungarees on the 30th. In August, a performance by Jann Arden on Friday, Aug. 7 (online pre-sales are sold out) and Spirit of the West on Thursday, Aug. 20, are highlights. Every Saturday, following the performances, crowds can enjoy fireworks, beginning at or after 9 p.m. For details, visit butchartgardens.com/ ent. Or call 1-866-652-4422.

NEWS REVIEW

Music in the Park bringing together great, live talent Brentwood Bay performances in July and August Carlie Connelly News staff

Music in the Park, which is offered seven Wednesday nights in July and August from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m., offers a wide variety of music, attracting audiences of all ages along with musicians of all ages. Performances take place in Pioneer park in Brentwood Bay and are put on through the Brentwood Bay Community Association — previously known as the Brentwood Bay Revitalization Committee. The Association also puts on a festival the first Saturday of June, which they have done for a cou-

ple years. Organizers at one point looked at the park and thought that it wasn’t getting used to its full potential, so decided it would be a great place to put on Music in the Park. In the evenings, patrons of the music performances bring a picnic supper with them to enjoy the evening, but many can also enjoy food from the vendors on site. Some of the bands set to perform are Pretzel Logic on July 29, the Tom Lang Band on Aug. 5, Jets Overhead on Aug. 12 and the final performance on Aug. 19 with Shaky Ground. Information can be found at www.brentwoodbay.info or by calling 250-652-1758. reporter@peninsulanewsreview.com

DrivewayCanada.ca

Beauty of a Hybrid gets more than a C Statements about the 2015 Toyota Prius c that I’ve heard before: The Toyota Prius c is boring to drive. Wrong. The Toyota Prius c doesn’t have enough power. Wrong, but not 100 percent inaccurate. The Toyota Prius c Even when I looks like my granddecided to put my ma’s shoes. foot down (and Again wrong, but that was often) also funny. I still averaged Say what you want 4.9L/100km about the smallest combined. iteration of Toyota’s Alexandra Straub phenomenally fuelefficient hybrids, but it doesn’t lack personality or the ability to shine on the road. Here’s why. Since the last time the c and I rendezvoused, I forgot how decent the handling actually is. That’s not what I’d say about all Prius family members. When passing a German sports car in a tight bend, I still had some leftover give from the tires and suspension. Body roll was surprisingly kept to a minimum GAS GAS so you know EV EV Toyota’s doing something right. Granted, I wasn’t on a racetrack (we both know who would win) and I wouldn’t say I was pushing it, but it does hold its own. It even garnered a thumb’s up from said driver. Prius: 1. Sports car: 0. So what if the drone of the engine and CVT combined sound like a lovesick walrus? It’s irrelevant.

The car has to work hard if you want it to accelerate quickly. After all, it’s not a performance vehicle in the traditional sense. The Prius c will, however, give you incredible fuel results. That’s thanks to the combination of a 1.5 litre, 4-cylinder gasoline engine, an electric motor and a sealed

Nickel-Metal Hydride (Ni-MH) battery pack. There’s a whopping 99 net horsepower produced, but again, the c is all about efficiency. PLEASE SEE: Drive the pants off this Prius, page 12

Drive the pants off this Prius

and left room for my cycling gear and a passenger up front. On the subject of size, around town, it pretty much fits into any parking spot. Even those annoyingly small spots that are the direct result of people not considering others and awkwardly placing their vehicles at just the right distance so a “middle” car can’t fit. You know the violators I’m talking about. Prius: 1. Parking: 0. The particular trim of c I had was deemed the “Technology.” That includes the aforementioned navigation system, SMS-tospeech and email-to-speech capability, a backup camera, a leather wrapped steering wheel, a power moonroof, 15-inch aluminum alloy wheels, and more. The takeaway at the end of the day is that the Prius c is my favourite Prius in the lineup. You can drive the pants off it and you’ll still get amazing fuel economy results. There’s room for five, a road bike in the back – but in that case you’ll have to fold the rear seats down and kick three people out – fuel economy is stellar and it’s wrapped into a shapely package. C might stand for City, but it stands for “winner” in my books. Visit www.toyota.ca for more information.

NEWS REVIEW

Estimated fuel results come in at 4.5L/100km in the city, 5.1L/100km on the highway and a combined number of 4.8L/100km. I could have driven it responsibly to try to beat those results, but that was not my goal. And there’s no fun in that! I wanted to drive it like I would any other car. Even when I decided to put my foot down (and that was often) I still averaged 4.9L/100km combined. Of the Prius vehicles available, I’d say it’s the least like a grandma’s shoe. In fact, I think it’s the cutest. Not because of its size, but because it has some nice lines to it. For 2015 there’s a restyled front end with standard single LED projector low and highbeam headlights, two new exterior colours and new “light pipe” taillights. Inside, you get quite a few tech features, a 6.1-inch (155mm) Touch Panel Display Audio with Navigation, and more. The front SofTex seats are heated, and if you happen to spill anything on them, they wipe off with minimal effort. Furthermore, there’s 484L of cargo space with the rear seats up. With the rear seats folded down, there was enough storage to fit my road bike inside (without having to take off the front wheel)

Give technology a break and read a book Open Air Library opens in Sidney’s Beacon Park Steven Heywood News staff

One of life’s joys is finding the time to get outside on a lovely day and reading a good book. And lately, there have been a lot of good days to do just that on the Saanich Peninsula. Taking advantage of the warm, sunny weather, Saanich Peninsula Literacy has started hosting an Open Air Library every Tuesday in Sidney’s Beacon Park. Spokesperson Marlene Dergousoff says she got the idea while on a recent trip to New York. “Our guide there showed us a large outdoor library program in a park,” she explained. “I thought to myself, I would really like to have one here.” Saanich Peninsula Literacy is a local group working to address the needs of people whose needs are not being met in a traditional setting. They seek to raise the profile of literacy and learning needs. Dergousoff said the Open Air Library is trying to reach families with a variety of reading materials. “One of our goals is to encourage people to give technology a break,” she said. “To bring them back the joy of reading.” To that end, the 18 or so volunteers with Saanich Peninsula Literacy bring to each Open Air Library decorated suitcases full of donated books and more. Dergousoff said they have reading materials donated to them by School District 63 (Saanich), the Canadian Federation of University Women and other groups. She added they are still short of books for teen or young adults, but their collection is growing. She said the Town of Sidney has been very supportive of the small Open Air Library, as it is in its first year. As well, the numbers of people dropping in has been growing and Dergousoff said they get visitors from the local area, as well as folks from around the world. Books are free, she continued, and people can take one and bring it back later — or not. The whole idea, she said, is to promote literacy and “the joy of reading.” The Open Air Library takes place in Sidney’s Beacon Park every Tuesday from 10 a.m. to noon until August 25. For more details about Saanich Peninsula Literacy, visit saanichpeninsulaliteracy.ca. editor@peninsulanewsreview.com

genres, from mysteries and memoirs to poetry, novels, short stories, non-fiction, children’s literature and everything in-between. “We started meeting last fall and the planning began shortly after,” explained Sharon Hope, President of the Sidney and Peninsula Literary Festival, which became a society earlier this year. “We have a wonderful group of people on our executive as well as about 10 or 12 people who work closely with us. Things have gone extremely well in terms of the planning and there already seems to be a lot of buzz around the festival already,” Hope said. The festival will also feature two writing contests — a children and youth contest and an adult short writing contest. “We’re calling it a postcard contest and participants will write a 50 word vignette and submit it for judging,” Hope explained. Festival organizers have also put an important emphasis on youth this year, and events will be held for students at both North Saanich Middle School and Parkland Secondary School, she said. “There will also be an event for elementary school-aged children at the library in Sidney on the Saturday,” she added. Hope said the prefestival events and fundraisers began earlier this year, with monthly readings at the Red Brick Café and some larger readings at the SHOAL Centre. Most recently folk singer and storyteller Tim B. Rogers did a reading at SHOAL. “Our next event is coming up next week at

the Star Cinema,” Hope said. “We are hosting the film Far From the Madding Crowd, a new film adaptation of Tom Hardy’s classic novel. We chose this film for the fundraiser some time ago, I have no regrets. It has gotten great reviews and we are excited for the showing,” she said. Partial proceeds from the ticket cost ($9 and available at the Star or at Tanner’s Books in advance and at the door) will go towards the festival, Hope said. The show begins at 2 p.m. on Monday, July 27 at the Star Cinema. “We are so appreciative of Sandy at Star Cinema for hosting this event and we’re really looking forward to Monday,” she added. An early bird weekend pass for the main festival ($99) is already available for purchase on the festival website at sidneyliteraryfestival.ca. Hard copies will be available at Tanner’s Books and Munro’s Books. The full weekend schedule and an updated list of writers attending the event is also available online. Hope said that although much of the planning for event is complete, the society will be in need of volunteers during the actual festival weekend. “We will need help with ticket sales, set up and take down, and even things like introducing authors during the readings at the Pier Hotel,” she explained. Anyone interested in volunteering during the festival can contact organizers through the website under the ‘contact’ tab. editor@peninsula newsreview.com

Buying a home is a complex and sometimes trying experience, and there are lots of mistakes to be made. But the same can be said of the listing experience. Selling a home can be just as complex and convoluted, according to Michele Holmes, the president and owner of Holmes Realty in Sidney. Here are seven tips that may help guide you should you be considering the listing of your home. • Don’t choose a realtor based on the price they give you. Anyone can promise you a high price and then come back with a more realistic figure later, but according to Holmes, that trap can be deadly for a seller. “You don’t choose a realtor based on the price that they quote you, no matter how attractive that price might look,” she said. “What you need is a realistic pricing at the get-go. Place your trust in the realtor’s expertise.” • Make sure that you are provided with a strong marketing plan. “Your realtor should be able to tell you how they are going to market your property,” said Holmes. “Who will take the photographs and on what web sites will those photos be listed?” According to Holmes, you should also be informed of how often your realtor will be checking back with you

your home. “Smart renovations can have their costs more than recovered at point of sale, and can make your home

much more attractive to buyers.” PLEASE SEE: A properly prepared, page 18

and how they intend to stay in touch. • Don’t rush to get your home listed. Do a walk through with a home inspector and/or your realtor to get fresh eyes on items like cracked window seals, broken light fixtures and other small items that can be repaired before listing. “My experience is that a $1,000 repair that needs to be done and is noted by a prospective buyer will cost you three or four times that much in the price you get for your home,” said Holmes. • Consider larger renovations. The most effective renovations to increase the value of your home occur in the kitchen and the bathroom(s). Outdated fix-

Opera returns to the Star Steven Heywood News staff

Tickets go on sale today (July 24) for a new season of Metropolitan Opera broadcasts at Sidney’s Star Cinema. For the last four years, the Star Cinema has been offering live simulcast performances from the New York-based opera company. Cinema owner, Sandy Oliver, says the idea was first raised by a group of about 15 local opera lovers. They approached Oliver and the idea took hold. “It has been a steadily growing group ever since,” she said. Already, 24 people have committed to the entire season of performances, viewed on the

begin on October 3 this fall, Oliver noted. They start at 10 a.m. and they continue throughout the winter and into spring, 2016. “People are always still discovering we present the Met Opera performances here in town,” Oliver said. “And when they learn of it, they are delighted they can stay close to home and see this incredible opera (company).” For show times and more details, visit starcinema.ca. • • • • Sidney’s Star Cinema is honouring competitor coupons for a free children’s’ admission to the movie Minions, with the purchase of an adult ticket. A properly prepared home is a sellable home Continued from page 17

• Stage your home. “Prospective buyers should be given free access to your home and be able to envision how they would look in the home, instead of seeing how you live,” said Holmes. You want to de-clutter inside and out and stage the home so that buyers see your home in the best light. • Get rover out of the picture.

Pets are great, but your cat, dog or cockatoo — while loved by the family — may not do much to impress prospective buyers. You may be accustomed to the smell of that litter box, but your potential buyers may not be. Finding an alternative home for your pets during the marketing period is probably a good idea. • Deal with the big issues. If you have an oil tank on the property that is more than 10

years old, it should be removed or replaced. Environmental issues of that kind can severely limit the marketability of your home. With all of this in mind, Holmes said that a good realtor can sell your home, regardless of the season. “There are some seasons where home sales are more active,” she said, “but if the home is properly prepared and priced right, it will be sold by any good realtor.”
