While for some the opening of a new gas station in Sidney may not merit more than a cursory observation that it may increase competition and convenience in the area, for Peninsula Co-op’s General Manager Dave Hoy it is much, much more. After all, he’s worked within the co-op business model for his entire professional career and he’s a fervent supporter of that business model and the benefits that he believes arise from its operations. For Peninsula Co-Op, the move signals a return to the region that spawned the company back in 1977 when a group of local residents on the Peninsula went door to door promoting the co-op business model to their friends and neighbours. The result was the opening of the Food Centre on Keating Cross Road. After some initial setbacks, the Co-op expanded into the fuel business with the installation of pumps at the Food Centre in the early 1980s. PleaSe See: Station site cleaned up, page 6
