Young Eagles claw to the top of B.C.

V

Members of the new youth project at the Vic West Community Centre gather around the three murals they created that now hang at the back of the community centre.

ictoria’s Mosquito ‘A’ (Red Eagles) and Mosquito AAA (Black Eagles) did Victoria proud this past weekend at the B.C. Provincial Baseball Championships, hosted in Cloverdale July 30 to Aug. 2. Each team, comprised of the top divisional players from five parks throughout the city, competed against nine other teams from around the province in six games to claim provincial gold. The ‘A’ Red Eagles, coached by Burke Stancil, Trevor Lines, Brent Yager and Daromir Rudnyckyj held a 5-1 record over the weekend, losing only one game to Abbotsford during tournament play. In their final game, the team rallied in the 6th and final inning, scoring six points to come from behind and beat Abbotsford 7-3 in the final game. The AAA Black Eagles, coached by Dave Swinton, Bob Finlay, Dan Carrier and Mario Biello went undefeated during the course of the weekend to beat Ladner 11-6 in the finals. It was a victory made all the sweeter for this team, which includes most of the same players and the entire coaching staff that was defeated in only one game last year – the provincial final.

The race is on in the federal election and results could come down to the wire in the Victoria and Esquimalt-Sooke-Saanich ridings, says a University of Victoria professor. “Both ridings will be interesting to watch for different reasons,” said Kim Speers, a professor in the faculty of human and social development at UVic. In Victoria (one of the few ridings that was not affected by the 2012 federal electoral boundaries changes), incumbent NDP Murray Rankin, Liberal candidate Cheryl Thomas and Conservative candidate John Rizzuti are in the running. However, Speers said the real challenge to Rankin’s seat comes from Jo-Ann Roberts, a former CBC host representing the Green Party. “I hope we have a very honourable campaign, I know we’ll be positive, persuasive and persistent. If we have that kind of campaign, I believe we’ll get a high voter turnout,” said Roberts, noting over the next few months she will focus on door knocking and kitchen table talks with residents. “In this riding, people have a voice and they don’t have to vote out of fear. In other parts of the country, people are voting out of fear of Stephen Harper being re-elected. We can vote for something in Victoria.” Rankin said he’s ready for the challenge. “My strategy will be simply to go to voters and tell them about my record — my record on the environment, my record

Prime Minister Stephen Harper officially announced Canada’s 42nd general election. Voters go to the polls Oct. 19. on social justice issues, my experience now as a person who has been in parliament,” said Rankin, adding he’s already signed up for five debates. “I’m proud of some of the things I’ve managed to do. I’m hoping people will look at that record and assess me worthy to represent them.” Another election battle will be fought in the newly-formed Esquimalt-Sooke-Saanich riding (formerly Esquimalt-Juan de Fuca), which includes some 113,000 people in Esquimalt, Colwood, Metchosin, View Royal, Sooke and parts of Saanich. According to Speers, after boundary changes, all parties believe they have a chance at winning the seat. “There appears to be the belief that when boundaries change, it is a free-for-all in terms of who is going to win, but it is important to look at how much the boundaries have changed,” she said. “In this case, the boundaries have changed where approximately half the

riding is now represented by different parts of Saanich.” Incumbent Randall Garrison, Conservative candidate Shari Lukens, Green Party candidate Frances Litman, Libertarian Josh Steffler and Liberal candidate David Merner are in the running. “It’s knocking on every door and shaking the hands of people and basically outworking everybody else in the race, that’s the key. If we can knock on every single door or telephone every single home, we have a chance of winning,” said Merner, adding they’ve had almost 10,000 contacts since January. On Sunday (Aug. 2), Prime Minister Stephen Harper dropped the writ launching politicians into 78 days of campaigning, one of the longest in the country’s history, eventually leading up to the federal election on Oct. 19. Speers added the biggest issue all candidates need to be aware of is not to bore voters over the 11 week campaign. kendra.wong@vicnews.com

Victoria’s Coen del Valle is gearing up to paddle his way to the top of the Western Canada Summer Games in Alberta in August. The 18-year-old is the only male sprint kayaker from Victoria to land on Team B.C. “I was really excited,” said Coen about being named to the team. “I knew it was going to be close for me making the team. But when I saw the announcement I was pretty stoked. It’s pretty much been my goal since 2013 to be on this team.” For the del Valle family, kayaking has become a family affair — his older brother also competed at the Canadian Sprint CanoeKayak Championships and his mother Rhys is his coach. “You’re bringing in a different dynamic. A 19-month-old toddler who was found dead in a Victoria hotel room last month has been identified. Saam Zohrevand (also known as Saam Darya) was found at Hotel Zed on Douglas Street around 4 a.m. on July 18, according to the B.C. Coroners Service. A preliminary autopsy indicates the toddler died of natural causes. Microbiology findings showed that Saam had developed both a lung infection and a type of meningitis, both illnesses became severe over a short period of time. The Victoria Police Department was originally called to the hotel for reports of a woman screaming. Saam was found with no vital signs and despite lengthy attempts at lifesaving measures, was pronounced dead on scene. A few days before the toddler’s death, police were called to Clover Point, near Dallas Road, by a citizen who was concerned about the loud praying and actions from a woman who had a three-year-old girl and Saam with her. Officers spoke with the women, children and the caller. The VicPD and the coroners service continue to investigate his death. Saam’s family has been made aware of his death. editor@vicnews.com

One of Crystal Dunahee’s favourite memories of her son Michael is when the family brought his sister home for the first time. “The best one was when Caitlin was born. He was her big brother, he always wanted to be helping out and doing what he could for his little sister,” said Dunahee. “He always wanted to hold her.” On Sunday, March 24, 1991, four-year-old Michael went missing from Blanshard Elementary School and was never found. “It was a hard day. OUR VIEW

Campaign of hope helps keep kids safe The family and friends of Michael Dunahee can never – and will never – give up hope. From a community dance, to a ball tournament or 5 kilometre run, these events help keep the memory of the young boy alive in our community, in the hopes that someday, someone will come forward with information that could solve a mystery that broke the hearts of his family along with those of an entire community. In the 24 years since the four-yearold disappeared from the playground of what was the Blanshard Street school, more than 11,000 tips have been received by police and the case has spawned one of the largest police investigations in Canadian history. But none of those tips has revealed any clue as to what happened to Michael. The day he disappeared was like any other, his mother, Crystal, was tying her cleats in preparation for a football game at the field, while his father, Bruce, was standing just metres away, checking the score of a previous game. Michael was playing on playground equipment within view of his parents. But when Bruce looked over, his son was gone. A half-hour later, police had swarmed the area to search for the boy. Hundreds of tips came in, but no trace of him was found. Crystal has turned the tragedy of her son’s disappearance into a lifelong commitment to advocate for other families of missing children. She served as president of Child Find B.C. and in 2011 was honoured with the Order of B.C. in recognition of her commitment to children and families. Her tenacity and ability to move forward and do so much for others along the way is more than admirable. A $100,000 reward is in place for any tip that leads to information about Michael’s whereabouts. Tips can be called in to VicPD’s designated tip line, at 250-995-7444 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.

It seems to me that was tried with aluminum ship fabrication, and it didn’t work out too well. For David Keane, president of the B.C. LNG Alliance, the question is how many large LNG projects, pipelines and all, can be managed at the same time as the Site C dam is being built. It was skilled labour shortages, and particularly a shortage of supervisors, that caused Australia to lose some of its proposed projects. Keane said all LNG proponents here want to use as much local labour as they can, because it’s less expensive and it builds local support. And he disagrees that B.C. is a sweet deal for the industry. Among other things, pipelines have to be built across two mountain ranges. Not only that, B.C. producers would pay an LNG income tax, which is a first in the history of the industry. Add to that PST, GST, payroll taxes, municipal taxes and federal and provincial corporate income taxes. Add aboriginal revenue sharing, and we have a deal. As part of the new youth project, Tré Thompson, Farah Diaz Graham, Naz Cemre Kalayci, Adam Milne, Eduardo Villasenor, Julissa Anthea Hernandez Ordez and Serene Krause spent the last 32 weeks creating a mural that reflects the community. The group worked together to gather ideas from residents about how best to create a project that would reflects Vic West. Ideas ranged from a skatepark, community garden, photo exhibit and marathon, before they eventually settled on a mural. “It’s kind of the first thing that comes to mind when you think of a community project,” said 16-year-old Milne.

Tower stands out on Victoria’s ‘front row’ Jim Zeeben Victoria News

Last week the Victoria Downtown Residents Association got its first chance to pore over a proposal to build a 12-storey tower at the historic Northern Junk site near the Johnson Street bridge. However, at least one Victoria councillor is already perplexed about why the City would consider a proposal that

goes against current thinking on development. “It’s unusual in that it violates pretty much every one of our priorities for developing downtown,” Coun. Pam Madoff said. The developer had not previously shared the proposal with council or city staff. After the meeting, the developer will likely consider the public feedback before deciding on next steps, Madoff said. Victoria’s plan for downtown

envisions the area as an “amphitheater,” with the waterfront serving as the stage and building height rising in step away from it. The “farthest seats” in the plan are at Blanshard, where buildings of up to 20 storeys could be considered, Madoff said. “The whole point is you protect certain areas to protect their character but still allow room for growth,” she said.

Okay, I had to take off the front wheel, but I

‘‘

have been in coupes much bigger than the 500 and didn’t have the same luxury. Then there’s the engine. Its humble 135 horsepower and 150 lb-ft of torque being produced from its 1.4L, MultiAir Turbo four-cylinder might look mediocre on paper, but it brings this car to life. And of the three available engines offered, the base, naturally aspirated 1.4L MultiAir, the Turbo, or the Turbo from the Abarth version (160 horsepower and 170 lb-ft of torque), the 500 Turbo (middle child of engines) is my top pick. It is spirited, peppy and makes driving fun. It’s enough horsepower to play with, but not enough to get into too much trouble. Adding to the fun factor is the introduction of an all-new Aisin heavy-duty six-speed automatic transmission. A manual lover to the core, I quite liked the new addition to the fold. It also took the edge off in urban commuting. And for the times when you want a little more gusto, there’s a “Sport” mode. You’ll find this magical button on the instrument panel. What it does is change the throttle mapping for improved engine responsiveness. While I love the car as a whole, I still have a couple

of quibbles with it. The instrument panel (with the push buttons and all) looks archaic and is a headache to work with. Furthermore, the optional navigation also sits atop the dash, which eats up prime real estate with it comes to forward visibility. And it looks misplaced. But for the reasons I wrestle with the Fiat 500 Turbo, there are plenty more favourable features that put me at ease. The optional Beats stereo system sounds great in the cabin, the leather-wrapped sport steering wheel and shift knob feel nice between my fingers and the optional red leather seats make the interior pop. Then there’s the drivability. I love its competency in corners. It handles much like a decked out go-kart but doesn’t give you same kinds of aches and pains. I guess it’s no surprise why fellow Fiat 500 drivers wave at others. They’re excited about their car and want to share the love. The Fiat 500 Turbo Hatchback has a starting MSRP of $21,395. But with all the options, the price as tested comes out to $30,370. Visit www.fiatcanada.com for more information. Alexandra.straub@drivewaybc.ca

After putting her body through hell for more than 48 hours and falling just shy of a space in the record books, Alex Cape isn’t spending any time wondering about what might have been. Cape and Susan Simmons set out last Friday afternoon to conquer three lengths of Cowichan Lake, a 105-kilometre swim expected to take 50 hours. “We faced some pretty ugly waves right off the bat on Friday afternoon. Susan was feeling nauseous and not holding any food down,” said Cape. The physical exertion and choppy water eventually took their toll on Simmons, who pulled out after 44 km, but Cape kept on going. She made up a lot of ground on the calm waters early Saturday morning, but the winds picked up again Saturday afternoon. “We faced nine hours of brutal waves coming right at us, three and four-foot waves. We were just getting pummelled,” said Cape, who lives in Victoria. Sleep depravation may have been the only thing keeping Cape from packing it in.

It’s that time of year again. In a few weeks, thousands of kids on Vancouver Island will leave behind the dog days of summer to head back to the classroom for another school year. But those summer months of watching TV, playing video games and hanging out at the mall have jostled students out of their regular school routine. “September is the opportunity for a family to hit the reset button, to get all of the habits in place that are going to allow for the most productive and positive school year,” says Dr. Jillian Roberts, a registered psychologist and an associate professor of educational psychology at the University of Victoria. “So you’re getting into the habit of getting out of bed at a certain time, having breakfast at a certain time, you’re coming home from school you’re unloading your backpack, you’re getting your homework out …As a parent, you have to take the lead role in getting things set up to promote success

Parents should also think about having a family meeting a week or two before school begins to talk about the goals and activities children want to participate in this year. “Instead of making it a hassle or an obligation, you turn it into a pos-

itive to have really wonderful family times together,” says Roberts. “When parents show children how to be organized, show children how to think and plan ahead, children only need to be shown one or two years. Once it becomes internalized and they do it themselves.” Here are few tips for getting students out of their summer slump: 1. Get things in place the night before. Have school clothes laid out, get lunches pre-packaged and home-

3. Establish relationships with other parents at school. Be active in a child’s social life — be involved in the school community, sign children up for extracurricular activities at the school or invite other families over for barbecues or dinners. “Shy children or children beginning at a new school might not yet have the skills to develop the kinds of friendships that will be good for them,” Roberts says. “Make it easy for a child to invite a friend to do something. If a parent buys an extra ticket to a hockey game, they can say to their child ‘invite a friend to bring to the game.’ It gives the child a reason or purpose to reach out when they might be shy to do so.” kendra.wong@vicnews.com

Fashion: going to the dogs this summer Susan Lundy In the dog days of summer, what better activity than having some fun with the dogs? For example, every once in awhile, when the girls were little, they’d decide it was doggie dress-up time. For some of these years, we had two dogs: Magic, a young, black German shepherd and Dexter, our aging chocolate lab. Both dogs proved useful in the dress-up arena. Dexter had already sashayed around the house in various fashions throughout the years,

and once Magic grew, it became time to view the effect of hats and coats and socks on a longhaired dog. So one afternoon, we settled in to relish some doggie fashion. (Dexter seemed to especially enjoy watching the show.) First, Magic emerged from the girls’ room prepared for winter in a hat, scarf, sweater and socks — tail tucked into one leg of stretchy gray pants. Next, she pranced out ready to exercise at the gym: sweats, sweatshirt and swimming medal around her neck. My personal favourite was her grandmotherly attire, complete with dressing gown, ribbons, hair band and glasses. Dexter always had an idea when we put clothes on him that we were joking around. He didn’t understand the humour, but

too rowdy. Even as Magic grew and surpassed Dexter in height and weight, she continued to consider him too big to take on. It turned out that German shepherds have the unique characteristic of attaching to their chosen human like a shadow.

he put his ears back in a happy, okay-I-sort-of-get-it look. Magic didn’t get it at all, merely looking at us blankly as we giggled away. Magic came to us one winter as a puppy, thrilling the girls, but leaving then 12-year-old Dexter less enthused. (Although I had

It turned out that German shepherds have the unique characteristic of attaching to their chosen human like a shadow. endlessly studied the literature on how to prepare a first child for a new baby, the books said nothing about preparing elder dog for new puppy.) Magic pranced around his feet, slept curled up between his legs and constantly begged him to play. Eventually, the two worked it out with Dexter proving his superior prowess by flipping Magic onto her back whenever she got

Magic quickly affixed herself to the girls’ dad, trotting along beside him like a mobile glue stick as he worked in the yard; watching him as he drove away in the jeep, and remaining at the top of the walkway until he returned. When Derrick mowed the lawn, Magic trotted along right behind him — up one side of the lawn, down the other. Then she discovered

the joy of retrieving. Sometimes in the dog days of summer, I’d be sunning on the deck and suddenly feel a presence nearby. A stick would land at my fingertips. Moments later, I’d feel a greater presence and look up to see Magic’s black face within inches of mine. Just staring at me, ready, waiting. But back to dress up. Dexter so loved the activity, one day he decided to do it all on his own. There we were driving in Victoria, Dexter in his usual spot in the back of the station wagon, laying with some camping equipment we’d just picked up. Suddenly, he sat up with a dish rack firmly attached to the top of his head. We hooted with laughter. The girls in the backseat tried to pull it off, but it was stuck, and outside the car, fellow drivers and

passengers joined in our amusement, laughing just as hard as us. It was a memorable moment, and makes me realize that without children in the house these days, our current dogs have never experienced doggie fashion. Hmmm. How would a dachshund look in a bikini?

Its humble 135 horsepower and 150 lb-ft of torque being produced from its 1.4L, MultiAir Turbo four-cylinder might look mediocre on paper, but it brings this car to life. And of the three available engines offered, the base, naturally aspirated 1.4L MultiAir, the Turbo, or the Turbo from the Abarth version (160 horsepower and 170 lb-ft of torque), the 500 Turbo (middle child of engines) is my top pick. It is spirited, peppy and makess driving fun. It’s enough horsepower too play with, but not enough to get into too much trouble. Adding to the fun factor is w the introduction of an all-new uAisin heavy-duty six-speed auual lover to tomatic transmission. A manual the core, I quite liked the new addition to the fold. It also took the edge off in urban commuting. And for the times when you want a little more gusto, there’s a “Sport” mode. You’ll find this magical button on the instrument panel. What it does is change the throttle mapping for improved engine responsiveness. While I love the car as a whole, I still have a couple of quibbles with it. The instrument panel (with the push

buttons and all) looks archaic and is a headache to work with. Furthermore, the optional navigation also sits atop the dash, which eats up prime real estate with it comes to forward visibility. And it looks misplaced. But for the reasons I wrestle with the Fiat 500 Turbo, there are plenty more favourable features that put me at ease. The optional Beats stereo system sounds great in the cabin, the leather-wrapped sport steering wheel and fee nice between my fingers shift knob feel th optional red leather and the seats make the interior pop. They’re excited about their car and want to share the love. The Fiat 500 Turbo Hatchback has a starting MSRP of $21,395. But with all the options, the price as tested comes out to $30,370. The 2015 Volkswagen Golf TDI Clean Diesel, part of the family of vehicles that won the 2015 North American Car of the Year, has set a new Guinness World Record. The award is for achieving the “lowest fuel consumption—48 U.S. contiguous States for a non-hybrid car” with an impressive 81.17 miles per US gallon of diesel (2.89 L/100 kms). Travelling 13,250.53 kms (8,233.5 miles) around the United States in 16 days on $294.98US of Shell Diesel fuel, the Golf beat the previous mark of 3.01 L/100 kms. “Covering 8,233.5 miles on just 101.43 gallons of Clean Diesel fuel is a remarkable accomplishment, and solid proof of the efficiency and fuel economy of Volkswagen’s TDI Clean Diesel vehicles,” said Michael Horn, President and CEO, Volkswagen Group of America, Inc. “Whether on a long road trip, or even in daily commuting, the great mileage and long range of our TDI models is a pure convenience factor that few other vehicles on sale can match. It’s a simple formula: Less Stop, More Go!” The record-setting Golf TDI departed

from Volkswagen of America’s headquarters in Herndon, Va., and returned there to claim the record. Wayne Gerdes, automotive journalist and founder of cleanmpg.com, was the primary driver. His co-driver was Bob Winger, an electronics engineer long involved in energy and conservation projects. Gerdes is an expert hypermiler who has set mileage records in more than 100 vehicles. In 2013, Gerdes set the previous record in a 2013 Volkswagen Passat TDI. “Volkswagen’s TDI Clean Diesel engines are just amazing,” said Wayne Gerdes. “I don’t think people realize the potential mileage you can get from

them. In our experience, it is possible to get truly impressive mileage results by using just a few simple fuel-saving techniques.” The 2015 Golf TDI uses Volkswagen’s advanced turbocharged and direct-injection Clean Diesel engine to achieve an EPA estimated highway fuel economy of 45 miles per gallon when equipped with the six-speed manual transmission. For the attempt, the Golf TDI used Shell ultra-low-sulfur diesel fuel and Goodyear Assurance Fuel Max tires which feature a fuel-saving tread compound to help increase fuel efficiency and offer confident all-season traction.

Sooke does have bats in its belfry Kevin Laird Sooke News Mirror

A plea by the Habitat Acquisition Trust urging residents from Sooke to Port Renfrew to help identify where bats roost and keep hidden during the day has produced an overwhelming response. “Thanks to the [Sooke News Mirror] article we got a huge response,” said Jill Robinson, coordinator of HAT’s bat stewardship program. “We’re really encouraged by the community involvement in contacting us. We’re also glad to hear that there are roosting sites around the Sooke area. It’s really promising to hear.” Researchers with the B.C. Community Bat Project Network say they know “almost nothing” about the local bat population. Residents are reporting bats in

houses, garages, sheds and other structures. A number of bats have been found in abandoned mine shafts in the Sooke area. Dead bats have also been given to HAT for identification. Many of the sighting in Sooke have been found along Otter Point Road, which shouldn’t be a surprise due to the number of wetlands in the area. The most common bats identified are little brown, yuma and big brown. Of the 16 species of bats in B.C., over half are red or blue-listed, meaning that their populations are declining and they could become endangered. The B.C. Community Bat Project Network was established in many regions of B.C. in 2014 to support bat conservation. The goals are to raise awareness about bats, provide information to homeowners dealing with bat

issues in buildings, promote the installation of bat-houses, and develop a citizen science program to monitor bat populations. Bats are an incredibly valuable part of our ecosystem. They play an important role in controlling insect populations, pollinating flowers and dispersing seeds and yet, researchers know very little about them. “Identifying where they are living will give us a better idea on how we can protect their habitat and more about what’s limiting in their habitat,” said Robinson. Robinson said she’s been encouraged by the number of people who have indicated they want to install bat-boxes on their property, which encourages bats to roost. For more information about bats, please go online to hat. bc.ca or call 250-995-2428.
