Naloxone prescriptions creating hurdles Health workers want opioid antidote available without prescription Pamela Roth Victoria News

The distribution of nearly 200 Naloxone kits in Victoria by AIDS Vancouver Island (AVI) during the past two years has prevented numerous drug-related deaths. But those who distribute the kits to opioid users would like to see them become available without a prescription in order to save more lives. According to Heather Hobbs, harm reduction services coordinator with AVI, the opioid antidote given to someone having a drug overdose on heroin, morphine, oxycodone and fentanyl, has been used at AVI at least 15 times in the past year. During the last two years, the agency has also trained close to 500 people on how to use Naloxone kits, and has received seven to eight reports of someone’s life

being saved because of them. Hobbs, however, suspects the numbers are much higher. The kits are mainly distributed to drug users who are at risk of overdosing and those who spend time with them, such as friends and family, since a drug user can’t administer Naloxone themselves. The medication quickly reverses the effects of opioids on the body by restoring breathing within two to five minutes. The effects last for at least 30 minutes, giving time for emergency responders to arrive. The problem, said Hobbs, is that a prescription is needed to access the kit, creating a regulatory hurdle for some agencies such as police. Paramedics have been using the kits for years, but Hobbs would like to see more first responders and community agencies

I think as many people as possible should carry it. It should be part of a standard first aid response.” So far this year,

there have been 26 overdose deaths from illicit substances on Vancouver Island – 12 of those are related to fentanyl. In Victoria, at least two people have died from fentanyl – a potent synthetic opioid analgesic that can appear in the form of pills or powder. The drug is often sold as OxyContin to unsuspecting

users or mixed into other street drugs, but it’s about 100 times more potent than morphine and 20 times more potent than OxyContin. Hobbs said drug overdoses in Victoria are an ongoing problem, and the introduction of fentanyl into the drug supply has only exasperated the

Matt Phillips, the founder of Phillips Brewing Company, stands in front of a cooler of beer in the brewery’s storefront on Government Street.

Local brewery opens malting plant Pamela Roth Victoria News

It’s been two years and 5,000 grey hairs in the making, but now local craft beer brewer Matt Phillips will be doing his own barley malting with the help of regional farmers. Next Friday, Phillips Brewing Company, located on Government Street, will mark the grand opening of its very own on-site malting plant – the first of its size in

Victoria and B.C. According to Phillips, the local facility is one of only a handful of malting plants across North America, and will partner with Vancouver Island farmers to use locally grown barley in its beer. “We were interested in looking at getting involved with local ingredients. We can take control of the process and start altering it in ways we’re interested in,”

said Phillips, who opened his brewery (the sixth largest in B.C.) in 2001, and now occupies most of a city block. “If we want to make a new beer with a new flavour, we can do that now.” Getting the barley (the main component in beer) is one thing, but getting it ready to go into beer requires a fair amount of infrastructure for the malting process to take place. Phillips

describes malting as a germination process, and at the end, the barely is heated to produce a variety of flavours. The on-site malting plant will do about 20 tons of barley at a time, which takes about a week to process. Phillips admits the malting process is quite technical, but it’s also a work of art. This year he expects to produce 72 different flavours of beer. “Every load of barley is really quite different, depending on where it was grown and what the moisture was where it was harvested,” said Phillips, who received help from an experienced maltster. “It opens up a whole new realm of creativity for us and we’ll definitely be playing with that.” Craft beer has become increasingly popular during the last two to three years, soaking up 22 per cent of B.C.’s beer sales, according to figures from the B.C. Liquor Distribution Branch. The province is set to boast more than 100 beer producers by the end of the year. Victoria now has approximately seven breweries and another three or four are located outside of the city. editor@vicnews.com

Family bands together to battle relentless disease

ALS taking the life of Victoria resident Arlene Underdown

IN BRIEF

Lt.-Governor of B.C. to celebrate Queen Elizabeth II

Lieutenant Governor of B.C. Judith Guichon is hosting a public garden party to celebrate her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II as Canada’s longest-reigning monarch. Members of the public are welcome to attend the event, which will include music and a tea service on the east lawn of Government House from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. On Sept. 9, Queen Elizabeth II surpasses her great-great grandmother, Queen Victoria as the longest-reigning monarch.

It started with a slur in her speech, then progressed to losing the strength to be able to walk up the stairs. In the months leading up to the day Arlene Underdown was diagnosed with ALS (amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease) in June 2014, her husband Jerry knew something was wrong, but didn’t know what it was. “We didn’t know anything about ALS until she got the diagnosis,” said Jerry, adding Arlene already had diabetes and some mobility issues before the diagnosis. “In one way knowing is better than not having the knowledge, but when you find out there’s no cure for it, it’s pretty rattling. It was very hard.” ALS is a terminal illness that involves the death of neurons that control voluntary muscles. The illness is characterized by stiff muscles, muscle twitching and gradual weakness due to muscle wasting, that results in difficulty speaking, swallowing and breathing. According to Jerry, Arlene has two to five years to live, but in the last 15 months he’s seen his wife’s health deteriorate significantly. Arlene, 65, has progressively been losing her voice and is now difficult to understand. She went from using a walker to a power wheel chair, and now needs a lift to go to the washroom. She also uses an oxygen mask at night to help her breath. Eventually her body will shut down

Despite support from the community, watching the health of their loved one slip away has been tough for the Underdown family. “My daughters are playing different roles. Right now, we’re sort of managing,” said Jerry, adding Arlene is booked to go into a hospice Sept. 10 at the advice of her doctor. He’s not sure when or if she will return home. “It’s a relentless disease. You just sort of come to grips with one issue and then there’s another.”

with her mother. “The diagnosis of ALS in our family has brought us closer because we are aware of the time we have left to spend with our mom and as a family together,” said Shannon.

“Losing her will leave a big hole in our family, however, her love will always be with us.” Registration for the walk takes place at 11:30 a.m. at the University of Victoria parking lot 10. Taking the stairs in the Bastion Square and Centennial Square parkades is about to get more fun. At the Centennial parkade, artists and local youth have been selected to create a series of murals featuring contemporary Canadian and First Nations Imagery. An interactive musical railing for Bastion Square will also be created, along with sensors to create a different sound and light effect on each of the six floors.

Input wanted on marijuana-related businesses

The City of Victoria is looking for public input on how medical marijuana-related businesses effect local businesses and residents. Over the course of the last year, there has been a significant increase in the number of marijuana-related businesses, which has lead to a number of complaints to the city and police regarding increased foot traffic, odour and infiltration of organized crime. Preliminary input will be collected until Friday, Sept. 18, followed by a townhall meeting this fall. To take the survey visit victoria.ca.

She even built a greenhouse nestled in the back right corner to grow tomatoes. “It’s one place in my life that I feel I can be a producer, not just a consumer,” said Cook, adding she hasn’t bought green beans, potatoes, garlic and basil from the store in years. “It’s a creative thing for me. I just love it. I like growing it and watching it grow. There’s nothing like pulling food from your backyard and putting it right on your table.” It is definitely a labour of love for the mom of two. She spends several hours a week — first thing in the morning and late into the evening — harvesting, hand watering and planting. But the benefits far outweigh the time spent tending to the garden. “It’s become a lifestyle and I couldn’t imagine not doing it,” said Cook, noting in one year they picked

There isn’t much room for Tracey Cook’s children to do cartwheels in their backyard anymore. The Fairfield resident has transformed her backyard, roughly the size of a school basketball court, into a year-round urban food garden. “When we moved in, there was a little vegetable plot in the back and the rest was grass,” Cook said. “It was a good place to start. I soon discovered it was something that fed me on all sorts of levels and the garden just grew and grew every year.” For the last 15 years, Cook has expanded the garden, which now grows garlic, basil, summer squash, lettuce, kale, potatoes, green beans, leaks, cabbage and summer char, raspberries and strawberries, among other things.

“The numbers are steadily increasing, but they’ve also remained somewhat stable. I do know that it’s high proportionally for a city of our size. It’s definitely concerning,” said Hobbs, adding resources for various treatment options are inadequate on the island. “Obviously people that use drugs are criminalized for their drug use so people hesitate calling 911 because they don’t want the police to show up. The fact that it’s (Naloxone) being put out into the community is really important.” In 2014, approximately 350 deaths in the province were due to illicit drug overdoses. Since B.C.’s take home Naloxone program was launched in 2012, officials say more than 260 overdoses have been reversed. editor@vicnews.com

VIU grad fundraises to send refugees back to school Kendra Wong Victoria News

A Victoria woman has raised enough money through an online fundraising campaign to send eight youth refugees back to school in the Middle East. Vancouver Island University graduate Alexandra Dawley has raised just over $1,100 in 10 days through a GoFundMe campaign called Lanes for Learning to raise awareness of increased need for international support for refugees in Amman, Jordan. “We see words in the media like ‘migrant’ and can disassociate ourselves from the humanity of refugee situations. Every human being that is facing the struggles of being a refugee is first and foremost that: a human being. When it comes to education, a little can go a long way,” said Dawley, adding it only costs $130 to cover all education expenses for a refugee child for a full year in Amman. Dawley’s passion for refugees began while she was pursing her masters at the University of Sussex in England, studying international social development in 2013. This led her to take three trips to Jordan to complete

dissertation research about the experience of Iraqi refugees in the region. It was here that she began working with a grassroots organization called Collateral Repair Project, which works to provide emergency aid and community development opportunities for refugees and marginalized communities in Amman. “After completing my degree, I found myself constantly thinking about the youth and teens I had gotten to know while in Jordan, and decided to share some of their stories and engage with the local Vancouver Island community,” Dawley said. She put on a fundraiser in Nanaimo and raised roughly $2,500 for the project to put towards heaters and blankets for the winter months, art supplies and for teens to participate in a leadership program. She quickly wanted to help more Amman youth. “The vast majority of refugee children and youth are unable to attend school and are therefore stripped of the sense of stability, personal development, and essential skills that come with receiving

OUR VIEW

Naloxone needed to save more lives Three years ago, not many people knew what Naloxone was. If you still don’t today, you’re not alone, and why would you, unless you’re a drug user or know someone that uses drugs. The drug, also known by the trade name Narcan, reverses the side effects of drug overdoses for opioids, such as heroin, morphine, ocycodone and fentanyl. It’s similar to an EpiPen, and one injection restores normal breathing and consciousness within three to five minutes. The effects last for at least 30 minutes, giving time for emergency responders to arrive. The key is getting the antidote to the user before it’s too late. In 2012, take home Naloxone kits became available in B.C. to those with a prescription. Since then, the province claims at least 260 overdoses have been reversed – and that’s just the number reported to officials. Last year, there were approximately 350 deaths in the province due to illicit drug overdoses. That number is sad given the number of resources available to battle drug addiction. Paramedics have Naloxone to administer when they’re called to a suspected overdose, but police do not, which seems odd since officers are often the first to respond to something that doesn’t seem right. The more hands these kits get into, the more deaths can be prevented, which is why it doesn’t make sense that a prescription is needed in order to obtain a kit. Obviously someone experiencing an overdose can’t give themselves an injection, which is why health officials encourage people who use drugs not to use alone. Family and friends of known drug users are also encouraged to get trained on how to use the kits. Some people might not have much sympathy for drug users, but they are still someone’s child, parent or sibling. Naloxone gives drugs addicts a second chance at a life that could some day become healthy and free of addiction.

Readers respond: Crosswalks, technology and Stephen Harper Rainbow Crosswalks too costly While pleased the Fort Street Business Association is paying for the latest street art efforts, I take issue with the costs provided of the City of Victoria rainbow crosswalks. The costs provided by Coun. Jeremy Loveday are inaccurate and incomplete. The rainbow crosswalks cost $14,750 to install, plus maintenance costs of $4,250 every subsequent year (or until the administration changes), according to figures from the engineering department and obtained through a Freedom of Information request. It would have been better to maintain existing white crosswalks properly, than to play politics with the taxpayer’s hard-earned money. Stan Bartlett Victoria

We no longer need costly sewage treatment plants built with obsolete technology and which serve only to partially mitigate the problem at best while still wasting billions of liters of water. All of the technology to create such an environmentally sound and resource conserving system already exists. It is available now. What we lack is the vision to stop trying to address this problem using conventional technology; to leapfrog instead into the future now rather than 30 years from now when the problems will be multiplied. Sadly there does not appear to be a single politician in this entire region who is willing to take off their blinders long to recognize what a magnificent future they could create for this generation and those who follow by initiating such a program now. What’s up with the new bridge? Can anyone explain to us common folk how the builder of our beloved new bridge can be asking for more money? I heard the reason was the cost of the steel from China was hard to source properly? The contract has no set price? Specs weren’t set before the order was placed? And something about the our standards were really high and that might be costing more? I don’t understand how a bidding process for our municipal projects can be fair or legitimate if the lowest bid gets the contract then drives the price up with impunity! Is this just the way thing have always been done? I know this would not work in the business world. We gave up the art, the lights, our future light light rail connection. Lisa! BC Transit changes service BC Transit is making several seasonal service adjustments to meet the demand for back to school service. This will include the reinstatement of post-secondary and secondary school services that were reduced over the spring and summer months. Several routes have also been adjusted in order to service the new Royal Bay and Belmont schools.

To facilitate the seasonal adjustments, some routes will be temporarily discontinued through the fall and winter. The most notable is Route 53 Atkins, which included stops at Thetis Lake. The seasonal adjustments allow BC Transit operations to conserve hours during summer months in order to maximize service hours during peak ridership times when schools are in session.

Fairfield’s Julius Maslovat (left) and Vancouver’s Robbie Waisman at the University of Victoria Wednesday. The two holocaust survivors shared their stories at a three-day conference at the university.

Robbie Waisman remembers the holocaust like it was yesterday. He was just 11 years old when he was separated from his family and taken to Buchenwald, a Nazi concentration camp near Weimar, Germany to work in the munition factories. Waisman, who was from Poland, was responsible for looking after the machines that produced bullets, but every now and then a bullet would get stuck in the machine. “I was given a screwdriver to dismantle it very

quickly, dislodge the bullet and make it go again,” Waisman said. “The SS (Schutz-Staffel) that saw me do this thought that I was somebody special and in turn, they allowed me to live.” For the next three years, Waisman and some 426 teenagers worked 12-hour days for a one-inch piece of bread, margarine and a bowl of soup made from potato skins. “People died of hunger. I don’t know how I made it,” said the 84-year-old Vancouver resident. “My incentive throughout was to go home, be reunited with family and show off because I was the baby of the family.”

Out of his four older brothers, sister and parents, only his sister and him survived. “They say ignorance is bliss. If I had known the enormity of the holocaust, that I had lost all my loved ones, I wouldn’t have survived. I wouldn’t have the desire, nor would I want to,” he said. “One should never give up on life.” Fairfield’s Julius Maslovat’s memory of the holocaust is not so clear. The 73-year-old was just under three years old when he was liberated from BergenBelsen, a concentration camp in northern Germany, in 1945. The rest of his family was

killed in the holocaust. “My memories are virtually nonexistent. [Robbie] is fortunate because he can remember the birth family that he had. I don’t have any recollection of them,” said Maslovat, adding that most of the information he discovered about his family and being transported to two concentration camps has been through research. While he can’t remember much, Maslovat did find a five second clip of him as a two-and-a-half year old getting his hair brushed when British troops liberated the camp in 1945. Waisman and Maslovat spoke at a three-day conference at the University of Victoria recently. The conference also coincides with the 70th anniversary of World World Two. “I realized that we represent a very small six and a half per cent of jewish children who survived. One-and-ahalf million of the six million were children and they were brutally murdered,” Waisman said. “We, as survivors, have a sacred duty and obligation to inoculate the world against hatred and discrimination. When we do that, we honour the memory of those who weren’t as lucky as we were.” Maslovat said there is also a lot of ignorance about the holocaust in the Canadian school system and hopes it will never be forgotten. kendrawong@vicnews.com

Terry Fox has a special place in Doug Lamb’s heart. Although he never had the chance to meet the Canadian icon, there was something about Fox and his mission to run across Canada to raise money and awareness for cancer research as part of the Marathon of Hope that caught his attention. “I had gotten interested in Terry’s run and took up running when I heard he had decided to run across Canada. I said ‘well, if he could do it, I’ll train myself up to be a marathon runner,’” said Lamb, a Fairfield resident. At the time, Lamb’s mother was also diagnosed with breast cancer, but it was so progressive that treatment would not have helped. “I told my mother when she was going through her cancer. That’s what kept me wanting to run and help out the Terry Fox Run,” Lamb said. Lamb’s mother passed away at the age of 51 in Ontario on June 28, 1981 — the same day that Fox eventually succumbed to cancer in New Westminster. He was a few days shy of his 23rd birthday. “He was probably the most admirable person I’ve ever really read about. Just watching him the way he was so determined to keep running, the hardships he went through and his goals and principles to try and help people, more so than looking for help for himself. That’s what made me feel this was somebody I wanted to tell more people about,” said Lamb, adding he has organized Terry Fox runs in Ontario and the United States. Lamb is also the organizer of the free Terry Fox Run on Sunday, Sept. 20, which

Victoria’s most creative, artistic and innovative minds are gearing up to participate in the annual Thinklandia festival this month. The free seven-day festival is transforming the Yates Street parkade into a hot bed of innovative ideas

“We try and create the best possible platform and forum for ideas to be expressed and elevated.” — Joey MacDonald

where creative speakers, artists, CEOs, physicists and storytellers can share their ideas. “It was a way to give speakers a platform, creative speakers a

platform, local entrepreneurs, non-profits a platform to talk about the kind of work that they do and really engage people on a different level,” said Joey MacDonald, creative programming director with Rifflandia. “We try and create the best possible platform and forum for ideas to be expressed and elevated.” Each day of programming has a different theme, ranging from illegality, storytelling, and edge of knowledge that focuses on everything including traditional native knowledge, and the idea of public. This year’s speakers include Victoria Mayor Lisa Helps, Senior Editor of Pitchfork Jessica Hopper, activist and musician Bif Naked and science educator Derek Muller. Last year, they saw

roughly 300 people. But this year, MacDonald estimates there will be anywhere from 750 to 800 people. “I think it really is the accessibility of the idea, that it’s a creative festival with as many opportunities for engagement as possible and as many access points as possible,” he said. “It’s a proof of concept for next year when we get to try bigger, better things.” Thinklandia was started by Viatec and Rifflandia three years ago. It runs from Sept. 11 to 17 at the Yates Street parkade. For more information visit thinklandia.ca. kendra.wong@vicnews.com

t’s what B.C. performance car enthusiasts have dreamed about for years – a first class, high-speed track. And that dream will become a reality next spring with the opening of the Vancouver Island Motorsport Resort, just north of Duncan, in the picturesque Cowichan Valley, less than an hour from Victoria. The centre, developed by the Island-based GAIN Dealer Group, promises up to 350 driving days a year, thanks to the area’s temperate climate. “This is not aimed just at people with very expensive, new high performance cars,” explains GAIN chief executive officer Peter Trzewik, who expects to announce membership details within a month. “We hope to see people with older model cars, who want to get out on a good track. We could sell out the membership immediately overseas but instead we are encouraging Canadians and people from over the border in Seattle and Portland. It’s important that this track is used daily.” And for around half of each month, Trzewick expects to see new car product launches, driving school courses and community charity galas and events. The circuit, designed by internationally renowned Tilke GmbH & Co, will provide the novice an opportunity to gain proficiency, while challenging the more accomplished drivers. Phase One comprises 19 corners and elevation changes of more than

25 metres, with a length of 2.3 kilometres. Speeds of up to 200 km/h will be possible on the high-speed sectors of the circuit in the first phase. When Phase Two is completed likely a couple years later, a total of 4.21 kilometres of track will be available Trzewik says driver safety is a priority so there are state-of-the-art run-off areas providing an opportunity to make a correction, with tire barriers and guard rails in reserve, enhancing the protection of both car and driver. Members travelling to Vancouver Island will be able to choose the convenience of leaving their performance car at the VIMR in a secure and temperature-controlled storage facility. With this add-on option, cars stored at the resort will be maintained to track-ready condition by specialists, providing the member full use of their car when their schedule allows, with minimal personal effort for repair and maintenance. Factory trained technicians representing Alfa Romeo, Audi S-Line, BMW M, Mercedes-Benz AMG, MINI JCW, and Porsche will be available to provide the expertise in keeping modern track cars in perfect running condition. Repairs and maintenance will be completed in the time between member visits to maximize their time driving. Members who enjoy vintage sports and racing cars will be able to have their cars maintained and repaired by Rudi & Company, a worldrenowned specialist in the restoration and repair of the world’s great

cars. Assistance with the delivery of a member’s car to the resort may also be arranged with trusted transportation partners. A 14,500 square foot clubhouse will offer a complete range of services to its members and house a restaurant featuring the very best of Vancouver Island ingredients. keith.morgan@drivewaybc.ca Quick Track Facts Length: 2.3 kms (Phase One), 4.3 kms (Phase Two) Track width: 10 m Track layout: 19 turns, 7 left turns and 12 right turns Top speed: 211 km/h (street legal sports cars) Maximum incline: 12.5 percent Maximum slope: 11.5 percent Track layout combinations: 6 Track characteristics: Extremely lively topography, hanging and banked corners in all sections, run off areas designed with the newest technology and standards preventing damages to cars and bikes and offering the chance to correct and return safely on to the track. Celebrate LABOUR DAY Picnic moves to Legislature lawn

T

he lawn of the B.C. Legislature will be packed with families celebrating Labour Day, Sept. 7. Victoria Labour Council’s 27th annual Labour Day Celebration includes musical entertainment from The Timebenders plus food and beverages and lots of entertainment for the children. The Timebenders’ exhilarating show covers almost every musical genre from the vocally-charged harmonies of the ‘50s, the British Invasion, California and Motown sound of the ‘60s, Glam Rock and Disco beats of the ‘70s, the New Wave of the ‘80s, Divas of the ‘90s and even some surprises from this past decade and hits of today. Bring along a blanket or lawn chair and enjoy the music and camaraderie of friends and coworkers. As always, the Victoria Labour Council welcomes donations to offset the cost of holding the celebration. Unions and community allies will be invited to set up displays. Monday, Sept. 7 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. on the B.C. Legislature Lawn.

BCGEU member Pam Desjardine with dogs, Sissy and Spirit, listen to the live music at the annual Labour Day picnic. The event features information booths, family activities, entertainment and lunch for the kids. Desjardine says she never misses the picinic rain or shine because she (and the dogs) enjoy the music. This year’s picnic is on the lawn of the B.C. Legislature and includes music from the Timebenders.

happy labour day! Olga is one of 46,000 HEU members united around your care. Today, and every day.

Labour Day weekend in Victoria is no time to stay at home and binge watch Netflix. If you’re not the type to escape to the quiet of the countryside, the city will be hopping with a multitude of events for everyone to enjoy. From the free Labour Day picnic hosted by the Victoria Labour Council on Sept. 7, to the Fringe Theatre Festival, the Saanich Fair to Blues Bash, you can dance, eat and be entertained every waking minute of the weekend. The Victoria Classic Boat Festival is a tribute to our maritime heritage. Wonderful craft, both yachts and workboats converge on the Inner Harbour for three days of events and festivities. It all begins at noon on Sept. 4 with the arrival of Honorary Commodore, John Horton, in the Inner Harbour aboard HMCS Oriole. On Sept. 6, enjoy a sailpast of boats beginning at 11 a.m. and a classic sail race along the waterfront from

Ogden point to Clover Point (weather permitting). For more information go to classicboatfestival.ca. The Victoria Fringe Festival, produced by Intrepid Theatre, is back for the 29th year and features 11 days of uncensored, live comedy, drama, dance, magic, music, one-man shows and physical theatre during more than 300 performances from 58 companies from around the globe. Classic fringe favourites will entertain the crowds, along with show-biz heroes, and performers from across Canada, Australia, Japan and the United States. Twentythree of the 41 Canadian companies featured this year are local entertainers. The Victoria Fringe Festival takes place Aug. 26 to Sept. 5 at 11 venues throughout the city. Weekday show times start at 4:30 p.m. and weekend performances start at 11 a.m. For more information go to victoriafringe. com.

Victoria triathlete tops podium in Penticton Emanuel Sequeira Black Press

Victoria’s Brent McMahon is the new Valley First Challenge Penticton half distance champion. McMahon, former Canadian Olympian, crossed the finish line at Okanagan Lake Park Aug. 30, completing the 1.9-kilometre swim, 90-km bike and 21.1-km run in three hours, 50 minutes and 38 seconds. McMahon bested the time of last year’s champion, Alistair Eeckman of 4:40.

“I had goals set for myself. I wanted to go out and I wanted to win this event,” said McMahon, who came out of the swim third in 22:04, then clocked a time of 2:14:08 on the bike and 1:14:28 on the run. “It takes a lot of hard work to do that. There was great Canadians and great international athletes here. They didn’t make it easy on me.” In second was Kelowna’s Trevor Wurtele at 3:53:52, followed by Boulder, Colorado’s Davide Giardini in

3:57:23 and Penticton’s Jeff Symonds in fourth at 3:58:50. McMahon said he worked hard to stay ahead on the bike and

had no intentions to let up on the run with Wurtele on his tail. “It’s Trevor, I can’t give anything right now,” he said.

Jennifer Spieldenner of Ohio claimed the women’s championship. In second was Carrie Lester and in third was Lesley Smith.

Winning the full distance triathlon on the men’s side was Penticton’s Dave Matheson coming in at 9:36:33. Kamloops’ Yvonne

Riders make a mountain out of a hill climb Duo climb 2.2 km Observatory Hill 68 times Travis Paterson Black Press

Clay Webb and Fabian Merino were still realizing what they had done a few days later. It’s called ‘Everesting,’ when cyclists turn a local hill climb into an ascent that matches that of Mount Everest.

Last month, 27-yearold Webb and 23-yearold Merino took the Observatory Hill climb to new heights, conquering the already popular training ride for local cyclists by ascending it 68 times. The popularity of the local Observatory Hill climb was already becoming something of a legend before the duo put their permanent mark on it. The GPS documentation of their ride is now forever posted beside other attempts made world

wide on the website Everesting.cc. “The response I’ve received from people has definitely been bigger than I thought it would,” said Webb, who lives in Fairfield. “We did it without really talking about it beforehand and a lot of people have commented on it who I didn’t realize knew about it. Family members and other cyclists, they’re all stoked on it.” The ride took 19 hours and 10 minutes, one of the faster times

according to Everesting.cc Sixty-eight is the amount of repeats needed to turn the 2.2-kilometre entry road to the Dominion Astrophysical Observatory at 5071 West Saanich Rd., which climbs 130 metres in altitude, and makes it equal to the 8,848-metre altitude of Mount Everest. It meant a total distance of 149 kilometres up, and down, for a combined ride of 300 kilometres. It’s an extreme feat that started in Victoria, Australia, a hilly province that is home to the Hells 500 — a group of hill climbing cycling Aussie nutters who bear the mark of either climbing 10,000 metres in two days, or Everesting. Both cyclists race for Broad Street Cycles in Victoria and were joking about the attempt one day with some other cyclists in early July, said Merino, who works at Still Life clothing and lives on the border of Victoria and Saanich near Mayfair

Travis Paterson/Black Press

Clay Webb and Fabian Merino atop Observatory Hill, which they climbed 68 times on July 11 — a feat known as “Everesting,” in which cyclists climb 8,848 metres of altitude in a single ride. shopping centre. “We looked at all the climbs [nearby] and the observatory was the only one mellow enough, but with enough elevation.”

Little did Merino realize, Webb had been eager to attempt the feat of Everesting. The adventure-seeking curriculum co-ordinator for Power 2 Be’s wil-

derness school had wanted to “Everest” since he learned about it during the 2014 cycling season. And that was it. By the end of that week, the pair had the logistics together. On July 11, with what they thought was a “ton of food” packed, Merino’s girlfriend dropped them off at the bottom of the observatory at 5:40 a.m. Within five minutes, they were nearly finished their first loop. The ride took 19 hours and 10 minutes, ending at 1 a.m. on July 12. “We had a lot of support. Throughout the day people came to do a few climbs with us. It helped mentally and gave us a distraction,” Merino said. “Clay and I are good friends but at times we were just quietly staring at our handle bars.” The climbs weren’t torturous but it was tedious. They anticipated finishing by nightfall, at least Merino did. Luckily, Webb brought a second light which Merino borrowed. After it was over, the two were only sore for one day. However, both felt the knock of exhaustion. Merino will continue road racing and, like Webb, will hit the upcoming fall cyclocross season in full swing, staring with the Island-based Cross on the Rock series and hopefully provincials. editor@vicnews.com

Character homes offer different opportunities History a big selling feature for potential buyers Katherine Engqvist Black Press

While many new buildings are springing up like dandelions around the West Shore and Victoria, there is a small niche market that is often overlooked. Heritage or older character homes are rare, but the wealth of history and character they bring often attracts buyers’ attention. Although, buyers be warned, they can have their share of potential problems. Jenn Raappana, a realtor with DFH Real Estate Ltd., said that older character homes require a lot more research before they go on the market. She likes to know as much as possible about a home’s history and anything that could come up during an inspection. An example of this is her listing for a home built in 1902 on Happy Valley Road in Langford. “It’s one of the original houses on the Galloping Goose,” Raappana said. Before listing that home, she had a number of inspections done so any problems could be addressed before potential buyers saw it. “In this case the house didn’t need a lot of work,” she said. With older homes she said it is important to check for any plumbing, electrical, or foundation issues that could be flagged by insurance companies and cause a headache for potential buyers. She said many older homes often have knob and tube electrical wiring that needs to be updated. By doing pre-inspections, sellers can be aware of anything a buyer might refer to as a “problem” and have it fixed before the house goes on the market. But Raappana doesn’t want to

Older homes also have a lot of benefits, she said. “They built houses really, really well back then.” The fact they have been standing for over 100 years is a true testament to that. They also have a lot of character and quirks that draw in a number of buyers. “People like to buy into the history,” she said, about another reason she likes to do extensive research on an older home before listing it.

“In the West Shore we don’t have a lot of them.” Older homes occupy a niche for those buyers looking for a house that can be customized with modern finishing but still have the charm of a heritage-style build. “I think people are taking that on as a project,” she said. “It’s a good investment.” Character houses with modern upgrades, such as granite countertops, tend to hold their value well on the market, Raappana said.

However, properties officially designated as heritage come with their own cup of tea. Often that designation means the homeowners are required to follow multiple regulations imposed by the municipality when doing any work or upgrading. Her prelisting research on heritage homes includes making potential buyers aware of those bylaws and exactly what they will or won’t be able to do to the home. editor@vicnews.com

Save-on-Foods’ celebrates with 100th anniversary Travelling Road Show

The Overwaitea Food Group and Save-On-Foods rolled 100 years of history to the Fort & Foul Bay Save-On-Foods location Friday as it wrapped up its 100-day Travelling Road Show. The innovative travelling display is designed to share the B.C. company’s 100year history using information graphics, museum displays, in-store events and even a 1915 Model-T Ford. Store managers from each of the Victoria Save-On-Foods gathered at the Fort & Foul Bay location Friday afternoon to celebrate with shoppers, suppliers and area residents. Guests enjoyed a great day filled with live entertainment, vendor demos, a hot dog sale benefiting BC Children’s Hospital and lots of fun for the entire family. “It’s great to be a part of a company that has cared about its customers for the past 100 years and this Road Show allows us to really showcase how we’ve continued to adapt to our customers’ changing needs through the decades,” says Darrell Jones, Save-On-Foods President. “We’re thrilled to have been able to welcome the community to come and celebrate this milestone with us and we can’t wait to be around to serve them for the next 100 years and beyond!”

Midget rep Ice Hawks to join Saanich Minor Hockey Jennifer Blyth Black Press

Due to low numbers, Victoria Minor Hockey Association will not run a midget rep program this year, sending its Oak Bay, Victoria and Esquimalt players to neighbouring Saanich Minor Hockey instead. It’s not simply a matter of demographics, but also that more choices are available to those 15- to 17-year-old players today. “There has been a lot of opportunity for midget-age players to go to academies (and) major midget,” said Chris Atchison, Victoria Minor Hockey president. Discussions have been going on in the background for several years between Victoria, the Victoria Racquet Club and Saanich, Atchison said. When the Racquet Club collapsed its midget program last year, some players went to Victoria and others to Saanich. “This is something I do think the executive at Saanich and the executive at Victoria have talked about for a number of years and we think it’s a necessary evolution of minor hockey in the south (Island),” Atchison said, noting he doesn’t see any change coming for either association at the recreational level, where both have healthy numbers of players who enjoy playing the game. It’s only at the elite or competitive level where the draw on players has created challenges. Over the years, Victoria had also accepted a number of Saanich players who needed a place to play because Saanich was full.

This year, some of those players opted to go back to Saanich or play elsewhere, leaving Victoria without enough players to form a midget rep team. Not wanting to leave the remaining players without a place to play competitive hockey, “we looked at ways to co-operate with Saanich.” While preliminary discussions had also included the possibilities of working with other local organizations, such as Juan de Fuca and Peninsula minor hockey associations, the logistics of getting Oak Bay or Victoria players to those locations could prove challenging for families. “Every single one of our families came back to us and said we hope it’s Saanich otherwise we don’t know what’s going to happen,” Atchison said. The change does not affect the midget recreational players or rep players at the younger levels, who will continue to skate with the Victoria Ice Hawks, Atchison said, noting about 15 players are affected. “Victoria is just so appreciative of what Saanich has done,” he said. Karen Strange, Saanich Minor Hockey vicepresident of administration, welcomed the new families to the association’s midget rep program. “Saanich Minor Hockey is proud to be working with Victoria Minor Hockey in order to provide opportunity for midget rep players in our greater community. We are excited about the upcoming season and welcome the players and their families to SMHA.”

The boost in numbers pushes Saanich from Tier 2 to Tier 1 status at the midget level, along with other Island associations with a larger player

base to draw from, such as Juan de Fuca, Nanaimo and the Comox Valley. Saanich will run three competitive teams at the midget

level from its home at Pearkes Recreation Centre, however Victoria will also be providing ice time through its rinks at Oak Bay, Saveon-Foods and Archie

Browning recreation centres, Atchison said. Rep assessments for the merged group of midget players began Saturday and continue this week. Victoria play-

The sixth-generation Chevrolet Camaro made its Canadian debut today at the 17th Annual St. Catharines Powertrain Show & Shine event in front of hundreds of Camaro owners and GM Powertrain fans. The popular annual event is open to all “GM Powered” vehicles and includes a tour of the St. Catharines Powertrain facility, allowing Camaro owners and fans to see firsthand how an LT1 V-8 engine is assembled. “We’re proud that GM Canada continues to play an important role in the sixth-generation of the Chevy Camaro, with the LT1 V-8 small-block engine being built right here at St.

SOMETIMES ADVENTURE CALLS. E CALLS. SOMETIMES IT SHOUTS.

FUEL ECONOMY The 2015 Subaru XV Crosstrek is the most fuel effi cient AWD crossover in North America. That’s because we built it with an ingenious Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT), advanced aerodynamic styling, and an effi cient SUBARU BOXER® engine.

SAFETY The 2015 XV Crosstrek comes standard with Symmetrical Full-Time All-Wheel Drive. This means every wheel drives the car, and every wheel provides invaluable control. Also, an available EyeSight® Advanced Driver Assist System‡ helps the XV Crosstrek avoid accidents in the fi rst place, leading to an IIHS Top Safety Pick+ designation†.

Catharines Powertrain,” said Steve Carlisle, president and managing director, General Motors of Canada. “Everything about the 2016 Camaro is focused on a fun, engaging driving experience, and the Canadian built V8 at the heart of the SS model delivers on that promise.” The Camaro powertrain lineup includes an Ecotec 2.0L turbo, a next-generation 3.6L V-6 and the LT1 6.2L V-8. The new 2.0L turbo delivers

the most efficient Camaro ever, with SAE-certified 275 hp (205 kW) and 295 lb-ft of torque (400 Nm) – and has a GM estimated fuel consumption rating of 7.8 L/100km highway and 0-96 km/h (60mph) acceleration well under 6 seconds. The 3.6L offers an SAE-certified 335 horsepower (250 kW), giving it the segment’s highest specific output of any naturally aspirated V-6, while the LT1 is certified at 455 horsepower (339 kW) and 455 lb-ft of torque (617 Nm) – for the most powerful Camaro SS ever. The new engines are matched with six-speed manual transmissions and all-new eight-speed automatic transmissions. keith.morgan@drivewaybc.ca

New self-advocacy group eyed for Sooke Building Bridges plans first meeting Sept. 15 Kevin Laird Sooke News Mirror

Building Bridges Community Support is starting a self-advocacy group this fall. There’s a number of selfadvocacy groups across Canada. One of the biggest is People First of Canada. Self-advocacy allows a person, usually with a disability, to represent their own views or interests. BBCS is opening the group to anyone interested in self-advocacy. “The idea is to teach people what it means to be a self-advocate and how to be a self-advocate,” said Astrid Koenig, a spokesperson for BBCS. “People with diverse abilities (disabilities) don’t always know their rights. It’s about being able to speak up for yourself and not

It’s about being able to speak up for yourself and not have other people tell you what you should be doing.” – Astrid Koenig have other people tell you what you should be doing.” Koenig hopes to have at least 10 people attend the first meeting where the group will decide on a name and what it will be doing. The meeting is Sept. 15 at 7 p.m. in the downstairs suite at 2236 Tara Pl. Building Bridges Community Support is a small agency that supports people with diverse abilities from early intervention with kids with autism, children’s social groups and support for adults in the community. For more information on the selfadvocacy group or BBCS, please call Astrid Koenig at 250-634-3020.
