Conconi Family Matching Donations to BC Cancer Foundation up to $1 Million Supporting a Monumental Leap in Cancer Treatment B.C.’s Conconi family is matching gifts made to the BC Cancer Foundation up to $1 million in support of an innovative new cancer treatment for B.C. patients. Robert Conconi believes he owes his life to cancer research and the hard working scientists and clinicians at the BC Cancer Agency after successful cancer treatments years ago. It was his eldest son Alex who drew the family’s attention to immunotherapy, an emerging area that’s been hailed as the most promising advancement in cancer care since chemotherapy.
The approach is to enhance the body’s natural potential to eliminate cancer in much the same way it wards off the common cold or flu. “We believe immunotherapy is the most promising and highly personalized new cancer treatment in development,” said Alex Conconi of the family’s commitment to match donations to the BC Cancer Foundation dollar-for-dollar up to an incredible $1 million. Dr. Nelson explained: “Each patient involved in the Agency’s immunotherapy clinical trial will have a custom treatment developed using T cells from their own body. The end goal of T cell therapy is to launch a massive attack that destroys every remaining cancer cell in the patient’s body.” The clinical trials rely on significant philanthropic funds to support the de-
velopment of each custom T cell therapy. Over 25,000 British Columbians will be diagnosed with cancer this year, and many individuals will face advanced or recurrent disease for which immunotherapy could one day provide a new treatment option. Dr. Anna Tinker, medical oncologist at the BC Cancer Agency will be running the Adoptive T Cell Therapy clinical trial. She said, “The hope for all of us is to be able to offer highly effective treatments to help people live better and longer.”

The Town of Sidney earned one of a halfdozen 2015 Open for Business awards at last month’s Union of British Columbia Municipalities (UBCM) conference. The award credits the recipient for having done the most to encourage and facilitate a thriving business community. Now, the Town will use that as a springboard for its new Economic Development Commission. “We worked very hard to earn that award,” said Mayor Steve Price. “It’s really an acknowledgment of the work of a lot of people, right across the community and their commitment to making Sidney a good place to do business.” But Price and the business community do not intend to rest on its laurels. “We’re going to use the $10,000 prize that goes along with the award to help with the newly formed Economic Development Commission,” he said. “That’s another new initiative that we’re very excited about and the prize money will give them a bit of a leg up in being able to accomplish their work.” The Commission was established by council as an outflow of the Mayor’s Downtown Revitalization Task Force — a task

The commission won’t just be bound to ideas that have already come forward. “We have a great group of people who will be charged with thinking outside the box … to be imaginative and innovative.” It’s a sentiment that’s shared by one of the newly formed Commission’s members, Brad Edgett. He served on the Mayor’s Task Force and is the Executive Director of the Mary Winspear Centre. They, according to Edgett, drove about $10 million into Sidney’s economy
last year. “We did what we could to increase our numbers. We booked bigger acts and managed to draw people into Sidney from all over. They were coming from Langford and beyond and while they were here they saw what a great place Sidney is.” Edgett said he sees business in Sidney as strong and getting stronger. “Look at what’s happening at Viking Air now where they’ve signed some new contracts … and the other big players are doing well too.” But Edgett acknowl-

Questions to the candidates:
WHY WAIT? WE CAN HELP NOW! Home & Hospital Visits Happiness is
Federal candidates weigh in on refugees, retirement Black Press newspapers the Peninsula News Review and Saanich News posed a series of questions to the candidates in the riding of Saanich-Gulf Islands — a riding that both publications share. Today, the PNR continues a series with the second and third of five questions and how each candidate in the Oct. 19 federal election answered. What should Canada’s role be in dealing with international refugees? Robert Boyd Conservative Party Our Conservative government is following a balanced, compassionate approach while safeguarding Canadians’ security. The Prime Minister has stated the crisis must be addressed at all three levels: confronting ISIS militarily, providing humanitarian aid and through refugee resettlement. Canada has also contributed more than three quarters of a billion dollars to humanitarian relief in the region. And we announced early in the campaign our commitment to bring in additional persecuted religious and ethnic minorities.
Alicia Cormier NDP Canada should be a force for peace and development. The human tragedy unfolding in Syria is horrifying and unacceptable. Lives are hanging in the balance, our focus must now be on saving lives and Canada must act, now. The NDP will work to: Get 10,000 government-sponsored refugees out of harm’s way and on the way to Canada by the end of this year through appointing a Syrian Refugee Coordinator, pulling resources from various departments including Foreign Affairs, Citizenship and Immigration and other departments; Increase presence of Canada’s diplomatic and immigration officials in the region to accelerate processing of refugees; Work with Turkey and other affected countries to remove bureaucratic obstacles to resettlement and end Canada’s policy of discrimination, to treat all refugees equally. We will also fast-track private sponsorship, with no cap, to bring as many people as possible to Canada and increase Canada’s contributions to humanitarian assistance agencies, including the UNHCR, based on

the needs on the ground and help coordinate the response of the international community to the Syrian refugee crisis. Tim Kane Liberal Party Like other Canadians, I have been shocked and disappointed by the Harper Conservative government’s lack of compassion for families fleeing Syria. Canada was once known around the world for our civility, our integrity and for our generosity. Individual Canadians and many groups and associations are responding to the crisis and it is deeply shameful that our federal government is resisting the international call to action. I am proud that Justin Trudeau has committed to accept 25,000 refugees from Syria through immediate and direct government sponsorship. Certainly we must be sure that the people who arrive to build new lives here do not pose risks to our security, but the procedures and protocols exist. All it takes to protect our security while providing a constructive solution to this humanitarian crisis is political will.

OUR VIEW
Still time to participate
I
t’s getting down to crunch time as general voting day looms. The advance polls have passed over the long weekend and now the final opportunity to cast a ballot in this fall’s federal election is Monday, Oct. 19, between the hours of 8 a.m. and 8 p.m. We encourage all of our readers who are eligible to do so, to get out and vote. Check those official Elections Canada voter registration cards carefully (don’t trust ones sent out by the political parties) and, just in case, bring your photo ID in case you’re not on the list — and should be. We here at the PNR are not going to endorse any one candidate over another — it’s your job to determine who will represent the interests of the Saanich Peninsula and Gulf Islands the best in Ottawa. It’s also your job to think about which party is going to do the best work for Canada. And that’s going to be based entirely on your own world view, how you see your own role in this country and how you wish to see Canada as a nation. We’ve done what we can to present some of the issues the local candidates have had to address — from local seniors concerns to how their parties are aiming to govern should they win the day. In fact, there is a lot of information out there on all issues, big and small, the candidates and their parties. Democracy requires a lot of participation to run effectively. So, taking part in this or any election demands work. Will all that hard work make a difference? You bet it will. Take the last provincial election, for example. In this area, the top three candidates were separated by only a couple hundred votes, at most. A few more percentage points in voter turnout here, and that race could have gone any one of three ways. The Saanich Peninsula traditionally has a good level of voter turnout, so in some respects, we are preaching to the choir here. So, we reach out to undecided or non-voters: there’s still a little time to participate in the federal election. Give it a try. Or be prepared to face the music on Oct. 20. What do you think? Give us your comments by e-mail: editor@peninsulanewsreview.com or fax 250-656-5526. All letters must have a name and a telephone number for verification. The Forest Practices Board has found these plans often aren’t good for much, although results are generally good when they follow up with on-the-ground audits of actual timber harvest areas. The investigation found that many of the plans cover “vast and overlapping areas of the province, and were written using legal language that makes them very difficult for public understanding or review.” Little has changed since a similar finding in 2006. During that time, the forests ministry was turned into Forests, Lands and Natural Resource Operations, with greatly increased responsibility over wildlife, mining, gas drilling and so on. Columbia River-Revelstoke MLA Norm Macdonald, who traveled the province as NDP forests critic in recent years, says the problem now is there just aren’t enough people on the ground to assess what’s going on in our huge expanse of Crown land. CANADA VOTES! Questions to the candidates:
Federal candidates weigh in on refugees, retirement Continued from page 5
What should Canada’s role be in dealing with international refugees? Elizabeth May Green Party The current system for bringing refugees into Canada is wholly inadequate to deal with the worst migrant crisis since the Second World War. Greens believe that special measures, like temporary resident permits, should be utilized to meet the scale of this crisis and that we must work together to fix our broken refugee process. Recent changes have unconstitutionally terminated health benefits for refugees, detained record numbers of refugees and their children in prison, arbitrarily for “irregular arrival” by boat, or sometimes for years without charge. The Green Party will overhaul Canada’s refugee protection system. We will end the shocking practice of detaining refugees, restore funding for refugee health care, and commit to taking in tens of thousands more refugees. Canada should immediately increase the number of Syrian refugees welcomed to Canada to 25,000 while committing to bring in 40,000 over the next five years, conditional on security clearance. We will also strengthen human rights protections for prospective immigrants and repeal recent changes that encourage rapid deportation, to restore Canada to a safe and inclusive society for new Canadians.

What would your party do to ensure Canada’s seniors are able to live comfortably in their retirement? Robert Boyd Conservative Party Canadian seniors have worked and saved their entire lives. They know what’s best regarding their financial decisions and retirement. Seniors at all income levels are benefitting from enhanced benefits and tax cuts introduced by our government, such as:
• Tax-Free Savings Accounts have provided 2.7 million seniors with a secure and flexible savings option that protects their money from being eroded by taxes. • Pension Income Splitting is providing significant tax relief to over one million senior couples. • Increases to GIS benefits are helping Canada’s most vulnerable seniors. • And increases to the Age Credit and the Pension Income Credit are providing signifi-
cant tax relief to eligible seniors. A re-elected Conservative government will also establish a $2,000 Single Seniors Tax Credit extending additional annual tax relief to nearly 1.6 million single and widowed seniors in Canada who have pension income. When combined with the existing $2,000 Pension Income Credit that is claimed by 4.6 million seniors already, this new measure will double the tax relief available to single seniors annually, beginning in

Sidney puts call out for surplus parking spaces Steven Heywood News staff
Parking in Sidney is still top of mind for the municipality and this month, they are reaching out to owners of private parking lots to
consider adding their spaces to the parking pool. Chief Administrative Officer Randy Humble said the Town has started talking to people about opening up their spaces to employees looking for downtown
parking. Called Sidney ParkLink, Humble said the idea is to find new spaces for workers and free up existing ones for customers and visitors. Humble added this will look at local businesses, strata organizations and others that own
their own lots or stalls, tapping into surplus parking spaces. The Town is seeking interested people, willing to rent out their parking stalls to sign up online at sidney.ca. The website will be updated with a map, showing
where the spots are available. Humble added he doesn’t expect residents close to the downtown core to open up their yards for extra parking as a result of this initiative, as the Town has bylaws against that.

CANADA VOTES! Questions to the candidates: Seniors and retirement in Canada Continued from page 7
b) Work with the provinces to expand long-term and home care services and to launch a neurological health strategy. Specifics include investment in home care for an additional 41,000 seniors, 5,000 more nursing home beds and $300 million to help build 200 clinics across Canada and help provinces hire over 7,000 doctors, nurses and other healthcare professionals, and $40 million to create a national Alzheimer’s and dementia strategy. c) Canada urgently needs a national housing strategy. The NDP will pass the Affordable Housing Act to recognize housing as a right and restore longterm, stable investment in social housing. Provide incentives to build 10,000 affordable and market rental units. We’ll also renew
co-op housing operating agreements that are set to expire. d ) Launch a tax benefit to support the two million informal caregivers who are looking after loved ones at home and provide an overdue boost to the compassionate care benefit available through Employment Insurance. e) Introduce a national plan for universal public drug coverage. Tim Kane Liberal Party Liberals are committed to ensuring Canadians have an adequate pension when they retire. Canadians should be able to retire with dignity, but many seniors are facing a retirement income crisis. If we do not find solutions to this problem now, Canadians will pay with higher costs later on. A Liberal govern-
ment will restore the starting age for Old Age Security (OAS) and the Guaranteed Income Supplement to 65 and work with the provinces and territories, with workers, and with employers to enhance the Canada Pension Plan (CPP) for future generations. Pension experts have said there is no crisis in OAS and that it is sustainable. Liberals will not end pension income splitting for seniors. We do support voluntary deferral of CPP and OAS pensions until age 70 in return for higher pensions. We support the recent changes to the RRSP withdrawal schedule, raising the age for mandatory withdrawal. Liberals believe that employers must honour their commitments to retirees. Elizabeth May Green Party Retirees are
diverse, vital and growing population within Canada. The Green Party fundamentally believes in providing our retirees with the independence, well-being, and dig-
nity they deserve. We will work to develop a National Seniors Strategy, including Pharmacare, a Guaranteed Livable Income, a housing plan, and pension protection, to ensure
seniors’ basic material and health needs are taken care of. We cannot be complacent about the economic struggles of seniors. The Green Party will enhance and
protect the Canada Pension Plan (CPP) — the most reliable and predictable pension plan — and introduce reforms to keep the Continued on page 10

Bringing the art world together on the Saanich Peninsula Sixth annual ArtSea Festival will include Fall Studio Tour and Sidney Fine Art Show Carlie Connolly News staff
F
rom Oct. 16 to 25, the Saanich Peninsula will be the place to be, bustling with more than 400 artists from across Vancouver Island celebrating arts and culture. The Festival will be commencing with the Sidney Fine Art Show from the 16th to the 18th with almost 400 art pieces on display and 242 artists filling the Bodine Hall at the Mary Winspear Centre. And it will be ending with the Fall Studio Tour on the 24th and 25th with 18 locations to choose from and tour the studios of various artists ranging in age from as young as 12 to 92 years old.
More than 40 businesses will also be participating during the Festival, hosting many local artists as they give various demonstrations and display their artwork. The artwork will range from weaving to painting to woodwork. The event, run by the Community Arts Council of the Saanich Peninsula (CACSP), is said to be even bigger than last year with more artists on the list along with a few new elements. “It’s an exciting year because we have added a few new elements to the ArtSea Festival, more so to make it more participatory, that’s kind of a direction we would like to move with it…” said CACSP Executive Director, Frankie Allen. In making the Festival more participatory, organizers will be adding two paint and wine nights on the 17th and 24th in the evening with instruction from artist and art instructor, Odette Laroche. The first twoand-a-half-hour night will be at the Shaw Ocean Discovery Centre and the second at
Brentwood Bay’s Empourium coffee shop. Tickets are $40 (wine is extra) with all art supplies included with the cost and a takehome canvas at the end. Tickets are available for purchase at the Artisans Gift Gallery. The Festival is also working with Star Cinema, who will be doing a special benefit film for the Arts in the Schools Program. The film will be a documentary about music and will be a by-donation affair. Star Cinema is a new addition to this year’s festival and their fundraiser is for area schools. The ArtSea Gala, which will take place on Oct. 21 at the Mary Winspear Centre (tickets $10), will have a new approach in that all of the performers will be from the Saanich Peninsula’s local school systems, with every penny going to the Arts in the Schools Program. In the last two years, they have raised $10,000 for that program, for things such as hiring a local artist to come in and enrich the arts curriculum in local schools.
“It’s wonderful for local artists as well as for the students and helps support the school district and what they’re doing.” This year, the Gala’s special guest is the Deep Cove Folk Society who had received a grant from the Arts Council years ago. Society musicians have been performing to sold out shows ever since. They recently donated $2,000 to the Arts Council’s Arts In The Schools Program, which Allen says will help the next generation of musicians. “It was such a perfect fit with our Arts in The Schools because we’ve been working on funding more performance art in the schools. They’re going to be our special guest at the gala for that donation.” Allen said the Peninsula and the Gulf Islands have the densest concentration of artists in Canada. “I think when you live with something, you don’t realize how important it is, so getting out and actively celebrating how very fortunate we are with that I think is very important.”

his year’s Sidney Fine Art Show will feature 383 pieces of original art — juried out of 1,100 submitted works. It’s a large undertaking for the organizers of the juried show, taking place Oct. 16 to 18 at the Bodine Hall at the Mary Winspear Centre in Sidney. They also put invitations out to 242 artists, representing the bulk of the people whose works will be on display. Paintings, carvings, pottery and three dimensional items will be just a few of the magnificent pieces displayed and for sale at the event. An awards night will take place on Oct. 15 before the show opens to the public. It’s for all of the artists plus the 200 volunteers with the Community Arts Council of the Saanich Peninsula (CACSP). That night they will
have awards for Best in Show, Best Photograph, Best Art Under Glass and more. Patrons, individuals who have gone out to raise money for the show and have paid for the privilege, will get a first viewing along with the first chance to purchase the art. The Sidney Fine Art Show itself has a $6 admission fee for each day or $10 for a three-day pass. Again this year, CACSP organizers begin the event with local wine tastings on Friday night. Called ‘Celebrate Local Night,’ it runs from 7 to 9 p.m. on the Friday with local wineries. On Saturday from 7 to 9 p.m., there will be a meet-the- artist session, where the artists will stand by their artwork for members of the community to stop by and ask questions. President of CACSP, Richard Julien, said there will be a dozen master artists in attendance. These are artists who have received awards at the Sidney Fine Art Show twice (the requirement to qualify). Last year, the Fine Art Show brought in around 8,000 individuals over the three day period and it’s expected to be a good turnout again. reporter@peninsulanewsreview.com

n Oct. 24 and 25, the public has the opportunity to go on self-guided tours of Saanich Peninsula artists’ studios and venues for the Fall Studio Tour. These local studios will display many things, from painting and glass, to woodwork and more. Ninety-two-year-old Elizabeth Rollins is one of those artists that will display her work in her very own home in Sidney, giving people the opportunity to view her work. The Tour will run throughout the day from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Rollins has had a passion for art since she was a little girl — and that’s a long time. “When I was a child I was always drawing. People had big knees and tiny heads because I was just a little kid,” she told the PNR in an interview at her home overlooking the sea. She has had the opportunity to live in many places, including Malaysia, England and Virginia, just to name a few, as her husband travelled for work. She painted and took care of the family. “Of course one is influenced by everything that one sees and experiences,” she said about her travels. Her work includes portraitures, landscape, still life and abstract. She uses oil, charcoal and acrylics and will be doing a
“I don’t want the idea to jump away, and with the acrylics I can go along with the idea as it develops.” When she lived in Malaysia, Rollins did a lot of batik work, which is a fabric using wax. She had worked for a friend that had a batik factory in the jungle, doing fabrics for her which she said was a wonderful experience.

Sidney tenor returns with Palm Court Light Orchestra Carlie Connolly News staff
Sunny Shams will be returning to his hometown of Sidney this Friday, Oct. 16 to perform with Shadan Saul in the Palm Court Light Orchestra’s Romantic Encounter. Shams began singing as a child, later learning the piano. “They (his parents) forced me into piano lessons, which I hated for the longest time,” he said with a laugh. When he was 12, that turned into fascination as he watched Michael Kaeshammer, a jazz pianist, perform. “I saw him do his boogie woogie blues and I said ‘that’s what I want to do.’” After taking jazz piano in college, he fell in love with the voice lessons he was taking on the side and decided to pursue that. “Opera stared me straight in the face.” While attending UBC’s opera program, he met and fell in love with Saul. This will be Shams’ third performance with the Palm Court Light Orchestra. “What’s nice about it this time is that it’s also with my girlfriend who’s a soprano. Any opportunity to work with her is amazing. We kicked it off as friends right away at our first year at university and we did a lot of productions together and we’ve done a lot of concerts in and out of the university and on our

Directed and conducted by Charles Job, the performance is at the Charlie White Theatre on Friday at 2 p.m. The Orchestra performs whenever they can and are a popular draw in Sidney.

Buffleheads Day kicks off Nature Canada project SIDNEY — When the punctual Bufflehead ducks return to Roberts Bay this month, they will be greeted by B.C.’s Lieutenant-Governor and representatives of the Friends of Shoal Harbour and Nature Canada. The return of the Bufflehead is an annual event, representing one of the many migratory bird species that call Shoal Harbour their home. This year, a ceremony will be held on Thursday, Oct. 15 at 11 a.m. at the beach
access at the east end of Ardwell Avenue in Sidney (at Resthaven Drive). The welcome will not only welcome the ducks back for the winter, but kick off a series of events. Lt.-Gov. Judith Guichon and representatives of Nature Canada will, on Friday, Oct. 16, announce the official start of a Naturehood initiative in Sidney. In brief, NatureHood encourages people to recognize, to enjoy and to protect the natural spaces and their

larly keen on engaging young people and helping them develop a broader understanding of environmental issues. The public is invited, however seating may be limited. That evening, at 7 p.m., there will be an illustrated public lecture at St. Paul’s United Church on Malaview Avenue in Sidney. The topic will be the life and times of John Macoun (1831 -1920), a potato-famine Irishman who by means of hard work and a passion for botany, boot-strapped
his way to become Dominion Botanist to the Canadian Geological Survey. Macoun retired to Sidney, where he continued to botanize. He was buried initially in the cemetery of Holy Trinity Church in North Saanich but because of his service to Canada, he was reinterred in Ottawa.
The lecture will be given by Macoun’s biographer, Professor of History Emeritus W.A. Waiser of the University of Saskatchewan. For more details, visit shoalharbour.wordpress.com. — with files from the Friends of Shoal Harbour
