nly into its third model year and Chevrolet is giving its legendary Silverado line a goodold facelift. The front end sees a taller grille, with squintier headlights replacing the “old” upright ones. Upscale models will get LED running and fog lights, while high-intensity-discharge (HID) headlights are available. The front bumper and lower fascia are reshaped too, but the rest of the truck still looks familiar. Behind the tailgate, the handy “Corner Step” bumper has

recessed footholds that, combined with built-in handholds inside the box, make accessing the bed much easier. All body styles -- regular, extended Double Cab (featuring front-hinged rear doors with outside handles) and four-door Crew Cab -- are attached to frames with lots of highstrength steel, extra bracing for stiffness and body mounts that help isolate road noise and vibration. You can order the Crew Cab with a longer 80-inch bed (the standard bed is 68 inches) and you’ll get a

choice of three all-aluminum engines. The entry point is a 4.3-litre V6 that has the same displacement as the previous V6, but output has significantly increased to 285 horsepower and 305 pound-feet of torque from 195/260. Optional is a 5.3-litre V8 with 355 horses and 383 pound-feet. An available 6.2-litre V8 is rated at 420 horsepower and 440 pound-feet and shares much of its guts with the Corvette engine, but for 2016 both V8s get the Corvette’s eight-speed automatic transmission. The

V6 carries over with a six-speed automatic. Although rough-and-tumble pickup truck, the Silverado’s model range also extends to include a premium “High Country” model to appeal to wealthy ranchers and city slickers. The best part about this truck is its highly optioned leather interior that places it above the previous top-of-the-line LTZ. Also for 2016 is an available built-in Wi-Fi hotspot to allow all aboard to access the Internet. There will also be support for both Android Auto and Apple CarPlay too.

2016 CAMARO

2016 MALIBU

W

A

ith the 2015 redesigned Ford Mustang and significantly updated Dodge Challenger models, what more could fans of old-schoolstyle American muscle wish for? Well, that would be an all-new sixth-generation Chevrolet Camaro to keep pace with the competition. The 2016 edition sticks with the same general look as the previous car, including a beltline as high as Steve Urkel’s pants. Inside, a completely modernized interior does away with the annoying tunnel-style gauge pods that weren’t all that popular when they were installed in the original car nearly a half-century ago. The new dash is clearly more user-friendly, with a 20-centimetre screen displaying vital info between the tach and speedometer, and another optional screen of the same size on the control panel for the navigation, communications and audio systems. The new car has a stiffer chassis and is slightly shorter and narrower than the 2015 model. The weight was also cut by as much as 175 kilograms. That amount relates to the base LT model equipped with a turbocharged 2.0-litre four-cylinder that

www.pentictonwesternnews.com

makes 275 horsepower and 295 pound-feet of torque. Of course the Camaro becomes heavier with the installation of either the 3.6-litre V6 (335 horsepower/284 poundfeet) or the Corvette-based 6.2-litre V8 (455 horsepower/455 pound-feet) that’s exclusive to the SS trim. All three powerplants are available with six-speed manual transmissions, or available eight-speed automatics. However the V8’s manual gearbox gets a rev-matching program that blips the throttle when downshifting. Matching the engine speed to the transmission keeps things nice and smooth at the back end. Regardless of which powertrain you select, you’ll still have a quick car on your hands; the slowest being the base turbo with the automatic that Chevrolet claims can get to 100 km/h from rest in 5.5 seconds (the quickest Camaro SS does it in 4.0). There’s no word yet whether or when the higher performing ZL1 or Z/28 models will show up, but given the racy Mustang GT350’s 2016 return with 526 horsepower, it shouldn’t be too long. The convertible version will join the coupe part way into the 2016 model year.

3

economy, while the slight power reduction likely won’t impact performance since the car is about 135 kilograms lighter. The 1.5 links to a six-speed automatic transmission, while an all-new eight-speed automatic is integral to the 2.0’s drivetrain. In the spring, a hybrid Malibu arrives that uses components from the 2016 Chevrolet Volt’s plug-in system. Output is estimated at 182 horsepower and fuel economy is about 4.9 l/100 km on the highway. The base Malibu S includes most expected features, but ascending to the LS or LT gets you additional premium kit. Along with the 2.0 turbo engine, the range-topping Premier has dual-zone climate control, navigation, Bose audio system, heated and ventilated front seats, wireless smartphone charging and 19-inch wheels (16-, 17- and 18-inch wheels are fitted to lower grades). Leather seat covers, sunroof and the latest in crash-mitigating interventions (forward collision alert, blind-spot monitoring, etc.) are optional.

t first blush, the new Malibu is attractively and intelligently designed, unlike the more bricklike 2015 edition. Designers increased the length by six centimetres, while holding the line on width. They also upped the distance between the front and rear wheels by over nine centimetres, of which 3.3 centimetres went to increasing rear legroom. Inside, the seven- and optional 20-centimetre tablet-style touch-screens controlling the entertainment and cabin functions are remarkable for their size and clarity. Both fit right in with an inviting dashboard that’s a far cry from the previous dash. The revised powertrain lineup starts with a new turbocharged 1.5-litre four-cylinder engine that makes 160 horsepower and 184 pound-feet of torque. It replaces the previous non-turbo 2.5-litre base engine rated at 196 horsepower and 186 poundfeet. Optional is a carryover turbocharged 2.0-litre four-cylinder that’s now rated at 250 horsepower and 258 pound-feet (previously 259/295). The base engine’s smaller displacement should improve fuel

2016 FOCUS

F

or decades, Ford has offered various versions of its small cars bearing the RS -- or Rally Sport -- badge, but unfortunately, those Escorts, Fiestas and Sierras never made it to North America. For 2016, that’s finally changing. The latest generation Focus RS follows much of the same recipe, including a wild body kit, stiff suspension, giant wheels and super-sticky tires. Also logical is the Mustang-sourced 2.3-litre turbocharged “EcoBoost” four-cylinder that produces an incredible 350 horsepower and 350 pound-feet of torque. The RS only comes

with a six-speed manual transmission and all-wheel drive. That means a zero-to100-km-h time of about 4.5 seconds and a top speed of more than 250 km-h. The AWD system includes four driving modes to suit location and conditions, including Sport, Track and a special Drift mode that allows for serious sideways driving. Its price of around $38,000 is nearly double the price of the base cars, but should be worth a look as it promises to be as much or more fun than a V8-powered Mustang. The remaining Focus range continues unchanged, including the 1.0-litre three-

2016 C-MAX

T

he C-Max and its plug-in Energi counterpart represent Ford’s first dedicated hybrid brand. The four-door hatch came in for a decent makeover for 2015. The front end saw a new hood with hidden washer nozzles, revised headlights and driving lights, all framing a sleeker version of Ford’s signature grille. The tailgate was also cleaned up and smaller taillights added. Under the skin, the C-Max is still based on the compact Focus architecture with the same overall length and distance between the front and rear wheels. However the C-Max is more than 10 cm wider and 15 cm taller, making it well suited for hauling people and their gear. Cargo space is about equal to that of the Toyota Prius v wagon, but with the rear seat folded flat the C-Max has nearly one-third more space than its chief rival. Note, however, that the C-Max Energi, with its more massive power system, reduces overall cargo volume by about 20%. The centre stack houses fewer buttons than before, focusing on the eight-inch touch-screen

for climate, audio, hands-free phone and navigation controls; it doubles as a backup camera-monitor, which is also standard. The most interesting addition for 2016 is the available 3rd-gen SYNC system that’s apparently much easier to use and learn. The gauge pod provides real-time fuel-economy readouts and driving efficiency as indicated by the number of green leaves displayed on an adjacent screen. There’s also a “Brake Coach” to help drivers maximize the regenerative braking system, keep the lithium-ion batteries topped up and maximize driving range. The powertrains consist of a 141-HP 2.0L 4-cyl that works in tandem with a 118-HP electric motor. The net system output is 188 HP, which is 54 more HP than the competing Prius v. A continuously variable transmission (CVT) sends the torque to the front wheels. Ford claims the Energi can run up to 135 km-h on battery power alone and has more than triple the Prius Plug-in’s maximum electric-only range (32 kms vs 10). The Energi plug-in lists for about $33,000.

cylinder turbocharged “EcoBoost” engine with 123 horsepower and 148 pound-feet of torque. Now playing the middle ground, the ST performance model is aimed at buyers who otherwise might be in the mood for a Volkswagen GTI. The 2.0-litre “EcoBoost” turbocharged four-cylinder produces 252 horsepower and even has an “overboost” with a giant slug of midrange torque added. The ST is still frontwheel-drive, but uses a stiffer suspension, bigger and stickier tires and a variety of electronic systems to make it a true backroad hero. The Focus Electric contin-

ues with its 143-horsepower motor and lithium-ion battery pack that can deliver a claimed range of about 120 kilometres. By Ford’s clock, recharging takes three to four hours from a 240-volt home station. Like other electric cars, the Focus isn’t inexpensive with an MSRP of $35,500 before tax rebates and other incentives, but there aren’t many downsides if you can afford it. The standard 2.0-litre four-cylinder engine is rated at 160 horsepower and is connected to a five-speed manual transmission. Optional is a six-speed automated manual gearbox with paddle shifters.

2016 FUSION

I

n just the few short years since the mid-size Fusion was introduced with its obvious star power, few remember its worthy-but-uninspired predecessor. The overly upright-and-blunt nose takes some getting used to, but the design with the sloped roofline is simply gorgeous. For 2016, the Fusion gets a redesigned centre stack that includes more buttons (thank you!) for the heating/cooling system and also includes a larger available third-generation “SYNC” infotainment system with a 16.5-centimetre touch screen. Ford claims the SYNC 3 is significantly easier to learn and use, taking many gestures and directions from smart phone systems. During the redesign, the Fusion abandoned its V6 options, but now there are no fewer than six distinctive engine picks, including two Prius-like gasoline-electric hybrid systems. It all begins with a 170-horsepower 2.5-litre four-cylinder engine, topping out with a 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder

“EcoBoost” engine with 237 horsepower. The latter is optional but a requirement for all-wheel-drive Fusions. In between is the 1.5-litre EcoBoost with 179 horsepower. It’s billed as the thriftiest of the bunch thanks to auto start-stop technology, but in terms of fuel savings, the Hybrid and Fusion Energi plug-in hybrid are really where it’s at. Both employ a 141-horsepower 2.0-litre four-cylinder combined with an electric motor to produce 188 net horsepower. The Hybrid’s system allows for maximum electric-only velocity of 140 kmh, and raises the fuel-economy bar to 5.4 l/100 km in the city and 5.8 on the highway. The Fusion Energi plug ‘n’ play model uses the same basic tech as the Hybrid, but gets a 2.7 l/100 km city/highway rating using a combination of gas and electric power. It can also travel up to 30 kilometres on electric-only propulsion and has a total estimated range of more than 1,000 kilometres.

Protect your vehicle from snow, ice and damage from the cold

W

inter can be an unf o r g iv i n g season. Freezing temperatures coupled with snow and ice can take its toll on people who live in climates where cold weather is a fact of winter life. While winter can test people’s patience, it also can be harsh on cars and trucks. Understanding what components of a vehicle can be compromised by dropping temperatures and snowy roads can help drivers take action to safeguard their automotive investments. While the Canadian Automobile Association notes that winter can wreak havoc on just about every part of a vehicle, there are some parts that seem to bear the brunt of Old Man Winter’s abuse. Properly servicing and caring for a car or truck can help. Drivers should take their vehicles for a tuneup and inspection before wintry weather arrives. A mechanic

will examine the car battery and check antifreeze levels and make sure that the thermostat, defroster, brakes, and even wiper blades are working effectively. Have the tires inspected for adequate tread, which can make navigating roads safer. If the treads are worn, replace the tires. In addition to visiting their mechanics, drivers can perform some inspections and fixes themselves. • Check that all of the vehicle’s lights are operational so your car can be easily seen during inclement weather. Exchange your existing windshield washer fluid with one that will not freeze in cold conditions. Check the nozzles on the windshield-washer system routinely and clear out any blockages of ice or debris. While addressing windshield washer fluid, also replace worn out windshield wiper blades with ones that can withstand snow and icy weather.

Scrapers should only be used on windows and not on the body of the car.

• A new coating of wax can serve as a shield against road salt, snow, sleet, and rain. Try a polymer wax to protect the paint. Whenever possible, rinse off salt and grime so it does

Some drivers mistakenly believe that salt stops being a problem once it dries simply because moisture is the active ingredient for a corrosive reaction. But humidity in the air is enough to keep the salt eating away at the car’s paint, and that can con-

tribute to rust. Be sure to rinse off the undercarriage of the vehicle as well. • Have your tires’ alignment checked toward the end of winter or early spring. A season of traveling over potholeridden roads or hitting curbs buried under snow drifts can affect the alignment. Get ev-

• Try to park the vehicle in a garage or under a car port, each of which can protect cars and trucks from the often harsh elements of winter. Vehicles can be affected by the cold weather. Keep them running efficiently to prevent damage this winter.

Car battery care in extreme weather

F

ew things can be more frustrating than jumping into the driver’s seat on a frosty morning, turning the key in the ignition and failing to hear the engine roar to life. Frigid weather can cause trouble with a car’s battery. Some drivers do not understand why, but getting the facts can help people avoid having to deal with dead batteries on cold winter days. Cold temperatures wreak havoc on batteries because they slow the chemical reaction inside of the battery. Batteries work by combining lead plates with lead dioxide and sulfuric acid to create electrons. While batteries can function under myriad conditions, the cold weather tends to degrade high-quality batteries and may render subpar batteries useless. The cold weather can cause the fluid in the battery to freeze and lose function. A battery that is frozen will not hold a

charge, and, as a result, the car won’t start. There are various ways to protect a battery from failure in the cold, and some of them involve taking precautionary measures even before the arrival of cold weather. * Assess the age of your battery. If your battery is old, now may be the time to replace it. Batteries differ in how long they last, but many last anywhere from five to 10 years. If your car is still running on its original battery and your card is several years old, it may be a good idea to get a new battery before the arrival of winter. Battery size will not necessarily provide better starting. It’s important to buy the correct battery for the make of your car, which can usually be found inside of the owner’s manual. * Verify that there is no corrosion. Corrosion can prevent a car from starting just as much as a worn-out battery. Corrosion is caused by a faulty connection

that allows battery acid to escape and corrode surrounding areas. Regularly inspect the battery to keep abreast of issues that may cause corrosion. Carefully clean away any corrosive residue that has formed and make sure the battery is correctly seated. * Install a battery blanket. A battery blanket is used to wrap around the battery and fit inside of the battery cover. A cord with a plug runs from the blanket to a wall outlet. The blanket can produce enough heat to keep the battery fluid from freezing. A trickle charger can also be mounted on the battery. It will deliver enough power to the battery while the car is off to keep it from freezing. * Minimize the use of automotive accessories. Do not start the car with the heater and the radio on. They can use up the power coming from the car’s alternator and prevent the battery from charg-

Drivers should replace old car batteries before the arrival of winter weather.

ing. Do not leave the heat and the radio on while the car is idling. Otherwise the car will not be putting out enough power for the alternator to charge the battery and power the

electrical systems. * Disconnect the battery. If your car will be stored in a garage for the winter, disconnect the battery. Certain devices, such as clocks and alarm systems,

continue to drain battery power when the vehicle is off. If your car will not be driven enough to recharge the battery, keep it disconnected when the automobile is being stored.

Cold weather can sometimes wreak havoc on vehicles. Knowing how to skirt trouble with your car’s battery can keep your car on the road throughout the winter.

he importance of maintaining a vehicle cannot be understated. In addition to protecting their financial investments, drivers who properly maintain their vehicles are also protecting themselves and their passengers. Many elements of vehicle maintenance become second nature to drivers once they have a few months of driving under their belts. Oil changes, routine checkups and periodic vehicle inspections can keep cars running smoothly and safely on the road. But few drivers remember to maintain their headlights, a potentially dangerous oversight that can compromise the safety of drivers and their fellow motorists. Old or poorly maintained headlights can be hazardous for a variety of reasons. When coupled with inclement weather, outdated or dirty headlights can make it difficult for drivers to see pedestrians and other vehicles. In addition, drivers who struggle to see at night may find their visibility further compromised by older headlights that don’t provide the light they need to navigate their vehicles safely once the sun has gone down. Because headlights can have such a dramatic impact on driver

safety, it’s important that motorists take the following steps to maintain their headlamps. • Recognize when bulbs start to dim. As headlight bulbs age, their light output is reduced by the effects of humidity, electrical resistance, filament fatigue, and general usage. The result is dim bulbs that make it difficult for motorists young and old to see when driving at twilight and at night, when a driver’s visual acuity is naturally reduced by 70 percent. Drivers should pay attention to how their headlights are performing, replacing any bulbs that are no longer providing adequate light. • Don’t just replace but upgrade your headlight bulbs. Bulbs that have started to dim need to be replaced, but auto enthusiasts or maintenance-savvy drivers know they can upgrade their bulbs when replacing them. Industry experts recommend replacing headlamp bulbs every two years, and replacing them in pairs to make sure the vehicle’s lighting is equally balanced. But rather than sticking with the bulbs provided by the car maker, look for a bulb that makes it easier to see at night and during hazardous conditions. The Philips

Upgrade Headlights put more light on the road, helping to make up for poor weather, dimly lit roads, aging headlights, and even the loss of night vision many drivers experience as they age. Capable of providing up to 100 percent more light than the standard halogen bulbs found on the majority of vehicles today, Upgrade Headlights create a better beam pattern that is dramatically longer than the standard bulbs, vastly improving driver vision and safety. • Buy the bulbs that match your driving habits. Some drivers spend a significant amount of time behind the wheel while others use their cars or trucks only to run errands or make short trips. When replacing bulbs that have dimmed, be sure to choose a bulb that fits your driving habits. Philips makes a headlight bulb for every type of driver, be it the daily commuter, the soccer mom or those drivers who only rarely take to the highway. Philips even makes a special headlamp for motorcycles that creates a unique orange reflection that helps distinguish the motorcycle from other vehicles on the road. Numerous studies have shown that roughly one-third of

auto accidents occur at night, when driver visibility is most compromised. So in addition to maintaining their headlights, drivers should take the following steps to improve their visibility. • Keep wiper blades fresh. Wiper blades should be changed every three months, as they can become brittle over time and, depending on their frequency of use, can wear out, especially on older vehicles with pitting on the windshield. When inspecting the wiper blades, remember to inspect your windshield washer as well, making sure that the washers are operating effectively and that the washer fluid basin has been refilled. • Avoid hanging items that compromise visibility. Many drivers like to hang trinkets, fuzzy dice or personal photos from their vehicles’ rearview mirrors. Avoid hanging such items, which can prove distracting and restrict your view of the road. • Clean the interior glass and mirrors. Dirty interior glass and mirrors make it difficult for drivers to see fellow motorists, so make removing any film buildup on such surfaces part of your routine vehicle maintenance.

fter a few years of the macho Ram 1500 trumpeting its excellent fuel economy, the pickup has been given a couple more traditional pickup topics to crow about. First is the return of the Laramie Limited, which has fewer cowboy-themed bits than the equally luxurious Laramie Longhorn and is aimed at Ford’s Platinum and GMC’s Denali. There’s special materials, silver pinstripes, dark wood and (gasp!) berber carpets. The second model is the Rebel, which has a

can’t-miss RAM badge across the front and similar treatment on the tailgate. There are also lots of black powder-coated bits, along with some additional skid plates, tow hooks and new 17-inch wheels. For 2016, you’ll find the same trio of engines. Chrysler’s ever-popular 3.6-litre V6 offers 305 horsepower and 12.9 l/100 km in the city and 9.3 on the highway. Its eight-speed automatic transmission also helped and it can now also be attached to the 395-horsepower 5.7-litre “Hemi” V8. The most unique

am must feel confident in its heavy-duty strategy, since there have been few changes to the model run in recent years. For 2016, whatused-to-be-known-as-Dodge continues to offer its optional Cummins turbo-diesel in bad, badder and back-alley-brawl baddest grades. The tamest of the 6.7-litre inline six-cylinder powerplants is rated at 350 horsepower and 660 pound-feet of torque, while the intermediate version pushes those numbers to 370/800. For maximum thrust and grunt, the 385-horse diesel lays down 900 pound-feet for 2016, which very

lightly, and likely insignificantly, outshines Ford. The Cummins can be matched to a six-speed manual transmission (the only shift-it-yourself in its class), or a six-speed automatic. The result is a truck that can haul and tow up to 1,730 kilograms of trailer weight and up to 820 kilograms of tongue weight using a conventional Class V hitch. The turbo-diesel has a standard exhaust brake that uses the engine’s compression to help decelerate the vehicle. That means shorter stops and less brake wear. Another Cummins bonus is that the interval between oil changes is 24,000 ki-

engine is the optional 3.0-litre “EcoDiesel” V6, which makes the Ram 1500 the only light-duty full-size diesel pickup in North America . . . so far. Using 240 horsepower and 420 pound-feet of torque with the eight-speed automatic, it can tow 4,175 kilograms. The regular V6 can tug 3,380 kilograms. As for body styles, regular-cab models are available with a six-foot, fourinch box, or an eight-footer, while Quad Cabs get the shorter box only. The larger four-door Ram Crew gets you a 5’7” bed,

or the 6’4” bed option. There are also available locking storage compartments built into the rear fenders that can each hold up to 120 355-millilitre cans that can be specified with centrally controlled power locks. When it comes to four-wheel-drive, buyers can choose between a part-time system and an on-demand setup that automatically engages when road conditions warrant. Other neat touches include a capless fuel-filler system and a front-park assist that’ll parallel park the beast into incredibly tight spots.

lometres. Still available is Chrysler’s venerable 383-horsepower 5.7-litre “Hemi” V8 with a seemingly light 400 pound-feet of torque. The optional 6.4-litre V8 delivers 410 horses and 429 pound-feet. For maximum towing, a coil-sprung rear suspension with air bladders is available for 2500 models, while the 3500 uses optional air springs integrated into the existing leaf-sprung suspension. In English, you can tow up to 14,160 kilograms. Of course four-wheeldrive is available, but for the HD it has a disconnect feature that disengages the forward driveshaft from the transfer case when

not needed, thus fractionally increasing fuel performance. Inside, owner/operators will also appreciate the cab design, with a dashboard that has available touch-screen controls (with redundant switches) for the communications and climate control systems. The center console features two-tier storage space. Regular, Crew and Mega cab models return, with a variety of box sizes and equipment levels that would make your head spin. New for 2016 is an available Laramie Limited model, which is aimed at the Platinum and Denali models from its immediate Ford and GMC competitors.

2016 200

T

hankfully, only the name carried over between the old 200 and the new. It competes in the highvolume mid-size bracket that’s the bread, butter and jam for Toyota, Ford, Honda, Nissan, Hyundai and other major manufacturers. There’s some roofline similarity with the Ford Fusion and a passing resemblance to the Dodge Dart that shares the same basic platform. The interior features easy-to-view primary gauges, plussized control knobs and optional 8.4-inch touch-screen display (a five-inch screen

is the base car). The usual floor shifter has been replaced by a console knob like the one in the Ram 1500 pickup. Under the hood, a 2.4-litre four-cylinder produces 184 horsepower and 173 pound-feet of torque. It connects to a nine-speed automatic transmission, as does the available 3.6-litre V6 that makes 295 horsepower and 262 pound-feet of torque. All-wheeldrive is available with the V6. Under normal operating conditions, the rear axle disconnects from the AWD system to cut parasitic power losses, which helps maxi-

2016 CHEROKEE JEEP

A

lthough contentious with some critics, the Cherokee has some seriously modern sculpting going on. All by itself, the pinched and pointy-nose grille says plenty about the risk that Jeep’s designers took. Then there are the eyelet headlights that would have been impossible to imagine on any production car, Jeep or otherwise. The interior is also as modern as the outside, although now includes reshaped front seats, a revised instrument cluster and tilt steering column that’s easier to use. All but the most basic Cherokee models feature 12.5- or 21.5-cm touch-screens that operate climate, communications and infotainment systems. Base models get a Fiat-designed 184-HP 2.4-litre four-cylinder. Optional is a 271-HP 3.2-litre V6 that’s a subset of Chrysler’s 3.6-litre V6 that’s the base engine in the larger Jeep Grand Cherokee and the Ram pickup. In the Cherokee’s case, ordering the V6 provides a 2,045-kg towing capacity. Both engines are connected to nine-

speed automatic transmissions, which is the first use of that gear changer in any Chrysler product. Front-wheel-drive is the norm, but buyers can choose from three different fourwheel-drive setups, depending on trim level. Active Drive I, optional in the Sport, North and Limited editions, is a single-speed unit that kicks in automatically whenever tire slip is detected. Active Drive II, also available in the same models, comes with a two-speed transfer case that’s designed for off-road use with either the four- or six-cylinder engines. For rock crawling and boulder hopping, Active Drive Lock, as the name implies, locks up the rear differential in low range. This system is standard in the Cherokee Trailhawk, which is a “Trail Rated” rig outfitted with an off-road suspension, skid plates, unique alloy wheels with all-terrain rubber, blacked-out trim and a full-size spare tire. All 4x4 systems include Selec-Terrain traction control with five different settings to match the kind of ground you’re covering.

mize fuel economy and likely saves wear and tear on various drivetrain components. When road conditions are slippery, the rear wheels can receive as much as 60 percent of the engine’s torque. AWD is also permanently engaged when the driver selects Sport mode. Then throttle and transmission shift responses become sharper and the electronic stability control becomes less nanny-like. The starting-point 200 LX includes numerous power-operated and comfort features plus keyless pushbutton start. The remaining

Limited, S and C levels are where most buyers will likely shop since they include plenty of extras and are necessary for ordering the V6 and AWD. To celebrate Chrysler’s 90th birthday, an option package is available on the Limited trim level that includes the larger 8.4-inch screen, sunroof, all the upgrades included in the convenience group (power driver’s seat, leather wrapped steering wheel, vanity mirrors) and new floor mats featuring the special 90th anniversary logo.

2016 RENEGADE JEEP

D

espite being sold alongside the Compass and Patriot, the Renegade is the smallest of Jeep’s miniscule off-roaders, and by a quite a bit. It was designed here, but it’s built at a Fiat plant in Italy and sold in more than 100 countries. The front and rear body overhangs are practically non-existent and there’s plenty of space between the tires and the fenders. The vehicle’s narrow width does place a premium on elbowroom, but the dash and control panel are well laid-out, the oversized knobs are clearly marked and the meaty steering wheel closely replicates what you’ll find in the larger Grand Cherokee. Base Renegades run with a 1.4-litre turbocharged four-cylinder that produces 160-HP and 184 pound-feet of torque. It’s connected to a six-speed manual transmission. The non-turbo 2.4-litre option puts out 184-HP and 177 pound-feet and is matched to a nine-speed automatic. Front-wheel-drive is standard on all but the top-line 4x4 Trailhawk, while Active Drive four-wheel-drive is

optional. The system’s Auto, Snow, Sand and Mud modes are augmented by an exclusive Rock setting for the Trailhawk. Additionally, the Trailhawk comes with a low-range 20:1 crawl-ratio gearing, unique wheels with all-terrain tires plus other off-road goodies. Renegades equipped with either drivetrain should prove reasonably thrifty with just 1,400 kgs to move around. A gas-saving automatic-axle-disconnect feature for 4x4 models will reengage the rear wheels when maximum traction is required. The base Renegade Sport includes only the bare essentials, while the Latitude adds air conditioning, roof rails, fog lights, touch-screen audio, Bluetooth connectivity and now rain-sensing wipers. Buyers of the “Limited” model get dual-zone climate control, heated leathertrimmed seats and 18-inch wheels (16- and 17-inchers come on lower trims). The optional MySky dual roof panels can be removed to maximize the open-air experience.

Penticton Western News AUTO PREVIEW 2016 Wednesday, October 28, 2015

2016 OUTBACK

A

t one time, Volvo had the market cornered when it came to spacious, yet unpretentious all-wheel-drive wagons. They still know how to make ‘em, but now Subaru is solidly in the driver’s seat with the ever-popular Outback wagon. For the 2015 model year, the Outback received a number of critical updates. Visually, the car was given a revised grille, lightweight aluminum hood, reshaped headlights and door-mounted mirror. The upgrades continued inside, with a quieter cabin, a reshaped dashboard, larger front seats and a more cavernous floor console. The suspension was also retuned and Subaru added Active Torque Vectoring that applies slight brake pressure to the inside front wheel during a turn. The base 2.5-litre four-cylinder engine is rated at 175 horsepower and 174 pound-feet of torque. The optional 3.6-litre six-cylinder continues makes 256 horsepower and 247 pound-feet. The four-cylinder can be ordered with six-speed manual transmission, while a continuously variable transmission (CVT) is optional, but standard with the six-cylinder models. A driver-controlled X-Mode for the standard all-wheel-drive system adjusts the transmission and engine output to reduce wheelspin. X-Mode also includes Hill Descent Control, which keeps vehicle speed to a crawl when traveling slowly down a steep and slippery slope. Incline Start Assist briefly holds the vehicle when starting on hills, while a Hill Holder System prevents the Outback from rolling backward when stopped, until the accelerator is pressed. When combined with the Outback’s 22-centimetre ground clearance, X-Mode makes the Outback more fit for rugged off-road duty.

2016 FORESTER

Q

uite simply, the Forester is Subaru’s best-selling model and continues to receive praise for its tough-whenit-needs-to-be attitude, passenger comfort and reliability. On good roads and bad, the standard AWD system operates virtually unnoticed. But when required, which is frequently in snow-belt regions, the vehicle’s mountain-goat capabilities make it a popular choice. The Forester’s platform offers sufficient distance between the front and rear wheels for plenty of legroom, while the tall roofline and low-rise load floor make for generous storage space with the split-folding rear seat folded flat. The base 2.5-litre four-cylinder engine produces 170 HP and 174 pound-feet of torque. For added punch, the 2.0XT uses a turbocharged version of the 2.0-litre non-turbo four-cylinder used in the BRZ sports coupe that’s rated at 250 HP and 258 pound-feet. The 2.5i Forester runs with a six-speed manual transmission or a continuously variable (CVT) option. The 2.0XT only comes with the CVT, but it has what Subaru calls an “engine performance management system” with Intelligent, Sport and Sport Sharp settings. In Sport mode, the throttle becomes more responsive and the steering-column-mounted paddle shifters mimic the action of a six-speed transmission. Throttle response is further heightened in Sport Sharp mode, but the CVT provides eight “speeds” to play with. This is possible because the CVT actually has no set ratios and can be programmed to act differently at different times. Standard in the 2.0XT and available in the 2.5i with the CVT is Subaru’s X-Mode control. When activated below 20 km-h, the system adds greater control on slippery surfaces by shifting torque specifically to the wheels with grip, either front to back or side to side. Base Foresters arrive reasonably well equipped including a rear vision camera, while upgrading to the Premium adds a better audio system and heated front seats with 10-way power driver’s chair. Limited models include the CVT and leather-covered seats, with the Touring edition topping out with touch-screen navigation and a 440-watt Harmon-Kardon audio package.

and new taillamps. Less obvious is the distance between the front and rear wheels that has grown by about eight centimetres. The increase amounts to a bit more cargo space, whether the secondand optional third-row seats are folded (almost) flat or are left in their upright positions. Second-row legroom has also increased, as has access to the optional third row. The dashboard now appears less cluttered, with easier-to-use/find (larger) knobs and dials and bigger fresh-air vents. The Sorento uses a modified platform that’s more rigid by 14 per cent and is built using more laser welds in key spots. There’s also greater use of industrial-strength adhesives, which provides added stiffness. More sound insulation means a cabin that is almost devoid of outside road and wind noise. For 2016, the Sorento’s base powertrain is a 2.4-litre four-cylinder that makes 185 horsepower and 178 poundfeet of torque. That’s a bit less than the previous 2.4’s 191/181 numbers, but the new engine gets better fuel economy. A newly available turbocharged 2.0-litre four-cylinder increases performance to 240 horsepower and 260 pound-feet of torque, while returning unchanged is a 3.3-litre V6 that delivers 290 horsepower and 252 pound-feet. Note that the V6 is mandatory if you want to outfit your Sorento with the thirdrow seat. Regardless of engine choice, the gears are shifted via a sixspeed automatic transmission. The frontwheel-drive Sorento LX is the price leader, but as with the EX and SX, it can be had with all-wheel-drive that splits the torque 95:5 (front:rear) when roads are flat and dry. When tire slip is detected or during hard acceleration - front-to-rear torque split is 50:50. Additionally, depressing a “Lock” button on the control panel holds the split at 50:50 at low speeds for maximum traction.

fuel efficiency’s sake and now makes 185 horsepower and 175 pound-feet of torque, slightly less than the previous 192/181. Newly optional is a turbocharged 1.6-litre four-cylinder that’s rated at 178/195. At the top end, a turbocharged 2.0-litre fourcylinder produces 245/260, down from the previous 274/269 ratings. The 2.4 and 2.0 powerplants are mated to six-speed automatic transmissions, but the turbo 1.6 receives its own seven-speed automated manual. Note that the hybrid hasn’t been included in the makeover process, but that will likely happen sometime in 2016. With numerous trim levels, the Optima cuts a wide swath to satisfy a variety of budgets.

ntil recently, the top dog in Kia’s sedan kennel was the Optima, but this mid-size sedan now finds itself sharing quarters with the larger Cadenza and larger-still K900 luxury models. Still, the Optima more than holds its own with buyers, especially so now with a new-generation model hitting the showroom floor. Exterior styling, an Optima strong suit, hasn’t been drastically altered, but the car’s overall dimensions have increased slightly due to a new platform that gives it a bit more length and width. The most important changes have taken place beneath the hood. The base 2.4-litre engine has been tweaked for

The style and proportions are right on the money and it’s devoid of superfluous curves and angles. The interior is as clean and uncluttered as the exterior and it abounds in handy touches. There’s room for up to eight people with the standard second-row bench seat, or seven with the optional second-row lounge chairs (with retractable leg rests) that can be positioned facing the front or the rear. Either mid-row arrangement slides fore and aft over a wide range and both the 60:40

split bench or chairs stow against the front seats to maximize cargo space. Mounted within the Sedona’s stiffer platform is a 3.3-litre V6 with 276 horsepower and 248 pound-feet of torque. It’s pretty decent on fuel with a rating of 12.9 l/100 km in the city and 9.5 on the highway. Expect the seven trim levels to run a very broad range, from practical family transporter to full-on luxury machine, to compete with the Chrysler Town and Country vans of the world. Base equipment in the L includes seven-passenger seating, front and rear air conditioning, keyless remote and the usual power goodies. At the top is the SXL+ that nudges the $48,000 mark.

mall boxes that offer all-wheeldrive are being directed toward singles, young couples and empty nesters alike, and for the same reasons. They’re relatively inexpensive, a breeze to maneuver in congested urban and extra-urban environs, can navigate poor weather/ roads and can carry more gear than similarly sized small sedans or hatchbacks. And don’t forget they can be nattily attired in fancy accoutrements plus the latest in crash-mitigating safety technologies.

As a companion to the CX-5 small wagon, the CX-3 is about 25 centimetres shorter, eight centimetres narrower and has 13 centimetres less distance between the front and rear wheels. It’s also at least 180 kilograms more svelte than the 1,455-kilogram base CX-5. The CX-3’s cabin purposely exudes an MX-5 (Miata) sports-car-like feel that’s interrupted only by a pop-up-style touch-screen display. The straightforward control-panel layout includes a trio of oversized knobs and a dashboard gauge pod

A

t long last (10 model-years, to be exact), Mazda has introduced the fourth-generation of the world’s all-time best-selling roadster. Compared to the outgoing Miata, the 2016 edition is considerably sleeker from grille to trunk lid. The fenders now bulge aggressively out from the body, the grinning air intake has thankfully been toned down, and the truncated rear deck evokes thoughts of BMW’s Z4 two-seater. The headlights appear influenced by Siamese cats’ eyes. Mazda stylists cut the overall length down by nearly eight centimetres

and reduced the distance between the front and rear wheels by about 2.5 centimetres. A full-court press aimed at weight reduction has also yielded a not-insignificant 68-kilogram decrease, with the help of aluminum body panels and lightened components. The completely revamped cockpit is as clean as they come, including a trio of clearly marked gauges, oversize control knobs for the ventilation system and an available seven-inch touch-screen with voice command for the audio and communications units. The slick non-power softtop (a power-operated retractable hard-

flanked by twin info screens. There’s not an excess of leg or headroom in back for adult-sized passengers, although the doors are at least wide enough for easy entry and exit. For storage, the CX-3 is about as spacious as most of its peers, whether the splitfold back seat is upright or flattened. A 2.0-litre four-cylinder engine delivers 146 horsepower and 146 pound-feet of torque. It’s uncommon for a non-turbocharged powerplant to produce that much twisting force, relative to horsepower, but Mazda’s

high-piston-compression “SkyActiv” design makes this possible. The sole available transmission is a six-speed automatic with optional paddle shifters. The on-demand all-wheel-drive system that’s available in all trim levels is linked to the vehicle’s antilock brakes, stability control and on-board ambient thermometer. It’s designed to “predict” front-wheel slippage and divert power to the rear wheels. Note that due to the space needed for the rear differential, AWD models lose some of their stowage capacity.

top is not offered) takes only one hand to unlatch or secure it in place. The MX-5’s 2.0-litre four-cylinder engine is identical in displacement to the previous 2.0, but its peak horsepower is less (155 versus 167 horsepower), but 148 pound-feet of torque tops the older engine’s 140 rating. The engine can be matched with a six-speed manual transmission or available six-speed automatic. The base MX-5 GX arrives with air conditioning, a six-speaker stereo, push-button start and an aero wind blocker, while the GS adds a sport-tuned suspension with Bilstein-brand shocks, limited-slip

differential, front suspension brace (manual-gearbox-models only), front and rear spoilers, Bose audio system with headrest speakers and 17-inch wheels (16-inchers are standard). The top-level GT’s upgrades encompass climate control, heated leather seats, navigation system and an insulated cloth-lined top. Extra GT safety features include lane-departure warning (for the inattentive driver) and blind-spot monitoring with cross-traffic alert (warns when other vehicles are approaching from behind on the highway and when you’re backing up).

How to stay safe on winter roads

n o w y weather can be a time for fun, especially for avid skiers or children who relish spending days off from school tossing snowballs and building snow forts.

Many adults, however, do not look forward to the snow as much as youngsters do. Snow can be hazardous when driving, but putting snow tires on a vehicle can improve vehicle safety.

According to information from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, roughly 115 people die every day in vehicle crashes in the United States. Each winter, snowfall compounds treacher-

ous road conditions, increasing the risk of accidents. It is important to know how to drive when weather conditions are dangerous. It is also wise to outfit a vehicle to reduce its risk of slipping and sliding on icy, snowy roads. Here are some tips to follow. • Limit time spent driving in the snow. Avoid driving during snowstorms or directly after whenever possible. Snow not only makes roads slick, but falling flakes can impair a driver’s visibility and reduce his or her response time. Try to wait until snow-clearing teams have salted, plowed and sanded roads before venturing out. • Be sure you can see clearly. Clear off the snow from the windshield, side mirrors and windows so it does not compromise your view. Also, top off the windshield fluid so you will be able to clear snow and salt kick-up from your windshield. Look for a washer fluid that has an antifreeze component, otherwise, your washer jets and wiper blades could be rendered useless. • Drive slowly. Reduce your speed when driving in inclement weather. It can be more difficult to stop or maneuver around a potential obstacle when conditions are less than ideal. Traveling at a high speed will increase the risk of accidents. • Leave enough room

Driving in the winter time, especially during or after snowfall, can be dangerous.

between you and other motorists. Tailgating is responsible for many accidents, even when there is no snow on the ground. In inclement weather, it can take longer to slow or stop the car after pressing on the brakes. Having an additional space between your car and the one in front of you helps you avoid a collision. • Be aware of black ice. Black ice gets its name from its veritable invisibility. It is so thin and hard to spot, it just looks like the black asphalt of the road. Black ice tends to form in areas that have had snow or ice melt, which then refreezes at night when temperatures drop. Be extra cautious on turns and on highway exit

and entrance ramps, where black ice frequently forms. • Steer your car into the skid. Remain calm and do not panic and jam on the brakes if your car starts to skid. Slamming on the brakes will only exacerbate the skid. Rather, take your foot off the accelerator, allowing the car to naturally slow down as you turn your wheels into the direction the car is skidding. This should help right the car and get you back on track. • Invest in snow tires. Those who live in especially snowy climates and do a lot of driving would be wise to purchase snow tires. Snow tires, also called winter tires, have special tread

patterns that offer better traction in snow and ice. They also are made from softer rubber compounds than regular tires that retain their flexibility in cold weather, allowing the tire to conform to the surface of the road. Although many vehicles come with technology to prevent accidents, they cannot do their jobs if tires are not maintaining their grip on the road. All-season tires are not a replacement for snow tires. All-season tires are designed to work in all sorts of conditions, from rainy weather to dry roads. Therefore, it is better to invest in a set of snow tires that will offer you better protection. When putting snow tires on a car or truck, be sure to do so on all the wheels -- not just the driving wheels. Otherwise you may still risk spin outs or uneven gripping of the road. It is not a good idea to keep snow tires on all year. Because they are softer, snow tires tend to be more noisy and can wear out faster in warmer weather. Therefore, switch out the tires at the beginning of the snowy season and then before the spring arrives anew.

2016 TACOMA

T

he Tacoma remains the automaker’s top-selling pickup, out-doing the full size Tundra by a fair margin. The 2016 redesign displays a bolder hexagonal grille and the fenders show more flare/flair. The available Tacoma lineup is offers an extended Access Cab or four-door Double Cab. The restyled interior environment benefits from a soundabsorbing headliner, a “floor silencer pad,” thicker door seals and multi-layer acoustic windshield. Returning for base-engine duty

is a 2.7-litre four-cylinder that makes 159 horsepower and 180 pound-feet of torque. Optional is a new 3.5-litre V6 that produces 278 horsepower and 265 pound-feet of torque, which replaces the 4.0-litre V6 with its 236 horsepower and 266 pound-feet. The four-cylinder Tacoma is paired with a six-speed automatic transmission, while the V6 gets a six-speed manual or a sixspeed automatic. Four-wheel-drive can be added, regardless of engine, however manual-transmission-equipped Tacomas will

2016 SCION FRS

T

he FR-S represents Scion’s flagship model that the brand has needed since its 2004 inception. The “Front-engine, Rear-wheel-drive Sport’s” long-hood-short-deck proportions are right on the money and the low hood, muscular fenders and curvy roofline give it a poised, gimmick-free appearance. In only its third year, Scion made small changes, including adapting a shark-fin antenna and larger and flusher exhaust tips. This is a real driving machine, so shift-indicator lights on the tach can be set at 100-rpm increments starting from 2,000 rpm up to the engine’s 7,400-rpm redline. The driver can also engage a warning chime that goes off when the engine’s max rev limit is about to be reached. The FR-S employs a 200-horsepower 2.0-litre “flat” four-cylinder engine (one bank of two pistons fires at 180 degrees to the opposite two pistons). A six-speed manual transmission is standard with a six-speed automatic available as an option. The latter features steering-

wheel-mounted paddle-shift controls, revmatching downshifts plus a “sport” mode that delivers faster shifts and throttle response. The powertrain sits well back of the front wheels to optimize distribution of the car’s svelte 1,275-kilogram front:rear heft at 53:47. A recent batch of updates gave the FR-S a stiffer front suspension and re-tuned rear dampers to reduce body roll. Every FR-S is shipped from its Japan homeland with the expected load of standard gear plus aluminum sport pedals and Michelin Primacy rubber fitted to a neat set of 17-inch wheels. For 2016, there’s a new 7.0-inch touch-screen audio system with eight speakers that Scion figures is more powerful and easier to use. Also, the FR-S now gets a standard backup camera. The host of available dealer add-ons includes a premium audio package, fog lights, rear spoiler, sport exhaust system, 18-inch wheels, performance brake pads and a cold air intake for a richer air/fuel mixture and a bit more power and sound.

automatically come with 4x4. The base SR Access Cab -- the work truck of the bunch -- is understandably thin on comfort/features, but does include air conditioning, a six-inch touch-screen, six-speaker audio system and a windshield mount for your GoPro-brand video camera. The SR5 adds a sliding rear glass panel, cruise control, remote keyless entry and an enhanced audio/communications package while the TRD (Toyota Racing Development) Sport and Off-Road trims put a rough-and-tum-

19

ble spin on the Tacoma. You’ll get sporttuned or off-road Bilstein-brand shocks, a Multi-Terrain Select system (that regulates the transmission, throttle and brakes for mud, rock or sand conditions), locking rear differential and a crawl control for taking it slow and easy for extreme trail conditions. The Limited lives it up with, literally, a truckload of luxury items ranging from leather-covered seats, navigation system and a power moonroof to chrome trim with 18-inch polished wheels.

2016 SCION iM

B

ased on the current Toyota Corolla platform and sold overseas as the Auris, the Japan-built iM could be just the right kind of vehicle that Scion’s youthful target buyers can get behind. The vehicle’s sportwagon-styling is easy on the eyes and looks considerably smarter than the xB and xD boxes and the iQ . It also helps that the wagon/hatchback has been fitted with additional body cladding and a very cool set of 17-inch alloy wheels. The iM’s other claim to fame is its overall spaciousness. With the back seat folded, the load floor is perfectly flat and the large liftgate makes it easy to load/unload bulky gear. Inside, the premium-feel cloth seats are particularly supportive in front and are complemented with generous legroom in back. The dashboard and control panel are clearly laid out and covered with soft-touch materials. Turning the key activates a Toyota-Corolla-based 1.8-litre four-cylinder rated at 137 horsepower and 126 pound-feet of torque. A

six-speed manual transmission or optional continuously variable unit (CVT) directs power to the front wheels. Where the iM excels is traversing twisty backcountry roads, where the well-tuned suspension helps keep the car flat and stable in the turns while taking uneven surfaces in stride. The well-bolstered sport-style front seats are a big help, too. Right out of the box, all Scions arrive well trimmed out and the “mono-spec” iM is no exception. Aside from the cool alloy wheels, you get dual-zone air conditioning, backup camera, power folding outside mirrors and a 19-centimetre touch-screen display for the six-speaker Panasonic-brand audio system with iPod connectivity. Among the few dealer-installed options is a navigation system plus a number of additional dressup items. A sunroof is not available, nor is the latest crash-mitigating safety features that are beginning to migrate onto the options lists of competing vehicles.
