SCION FR-S
2016
SCION iM Toyota breathes new life into its Scion brand with the new iM wagon and sub-compact iA sedan. Drivetrain: A four-cylinder engine generates 137 horsepower; six-speed manual and continuously variable transmissions direct torque to the front wheels.
TECHNICAL SPECIFICATIONS
DL# 30382
Base price (incl. destination): $22,900 Type: Four-door compact wagon Engine (hp): 1.8-litre DOHC H4 (137) Layout: Front engine, front-wheel-drive Transmissions: Six-speed manual; continuously variable (opt.) L/100 km (city/highway): 8.3/6.3 (CVT) Weight (kg): 1,335
Based on the current Toyota Corolla platform and sold overseas as the Auris, the Japan-built iM could be just the right kind of vehicle that Scion’s youthful target buyers can get behind. The vehicle’s sportwagonstyling is easy on the eyes and looks considerably smarter than the retired xB and xD boxes and the also-history iQ pipsqueak. It also helps that the wagon/hatchback has been fitted with additional body cladding and a very cool set of 17-inch alloy wheels. The iM’s other claim to fame is its overall spaciousness. With the back seat folded, the load floor is perfectly flat and the large liftgate makes it easy to load/unload bulky gear. Inside, the premiumfeel cloth seats are particularly supportive in front and are complemented with generous legroom in back. The dashboard and control panel are clearly laid out and covered with soft-touch materials. Turning the key activates a Toyota-Corolla-based 1.8-litre four-cylinder rated at 137 horsepower and 126 pound-feet of torque. A six-speed manual transmission or optional continuously variable unit (CVT) directs power to the front wheels. Where the iM excels is traversing twisty backcountry roads, where the well-tuned suspension helps keep the car flat and stable in the turns while taking uneven surfaces in stride. The well-bolstered sport-style front seats are a big help, too. Right out of the box, all Scions arrive well trimmed out and the “mono-spec” iM is no exception. Aside from the cool alloy wheels, you get dual-zone air conditioning, backup camera, power folding outside mirrors and a 19-centimetre touch-screen display for the six-speaker Panasonic-brand audio system with iPod connectivity. Among the few dealer-installed options is a navigation system plus a number of additional dress-up items. A sunroof is not available, nor is the latest crash-mitigating safety features that are beginning to migrate onto the options lists of competing vehicles.
Scion’s fun rear-drive FR-S doesn’t change its playbook much for 2016, just adding a new radio and other driver technology. Drivetrain: A collaboratively produced 200-horsepower fourcylinder engine drives the rear wheels via a six-speed manual transmission or available six-speed automatic. The FR-S represents Scion’s flagship model that the brand has needed since its 2004 inception. The “Front-engine, Rear-wheel-drive Sport’s” long-hood-short-deck proportions are TECHNICAL right on the money and the low hood, muscular fenders and curvy roofline give SPECIFICATIONS it a poised, gimmick-free appearance. In only its third year, Scion made small changes, including adapting a shark-fin antenna and larger and flusher exhaust Base price tips. This is a real driving machine, so shift-indicator lights on the tach can be (incl. destination): set at 100-rpm increments starting from 2,000 rpm up to the engine’s 7,400$29,200 rpm redline. The driver can also engage a warning chime that goes off when the Type: engine’s max rev limit is about to be reached. As with Subaru’s BRZ, the FR-S employs a 200-horsepower 2.0-litre “flat” four-cylinder engine (one bank of two Two-door coupe pistons fires at 180 degrees to the opposite two pistons). A six-speed manual Engine (hp): transmission is standard with a six-speed automatic available as an option. 2.0-litre DOHC H4 The latter features steering-wheel-mounted paddle-shift controls, rev-matching (200) downshifts plus a “sport” mode that delivers faster shifts and throttle response. Layout: The powertrain sits well back of the front wheels to optimize distribution of the Front-engine, car’s svelte 1,275-kilogram front:rear heft at 53:47. A recent batch of updates rear-wheel-drive gave the FR-S a stiffer front suspension and re-tuned rear dampers to reduce Transmissions: body roll. Every FR-S is shipped from its Japan homeland with the expected Six-speed manual; load of standard gear plus aluminum sport pedals and Michelin Primacy rubber six-speed automatic (opt.) fitted to a neat set of 17-inch wheels. For 2016, there’s a new 7.0-inch touchscreen audio system with eight speakers that Scion figures is more powerful L/100 km and easier to use. Also, the FR-S now gets a standard backup camera. The host (city/highway): of available dealer add-ons includes a premium audio package, fog lights, rear 10.9/7.9 (AT) spoiler, sport exhaust system, 18-inch wheels, performance brake pads and Weight (kg): 1,275 a cold air intake for a richer air/fuel mixture and a bit more power and sound.

SUBARU OUTBACK Who says wagons are passé? The Outback proves the critics wrong with strength, stamina and impressive cargo-carrying abilities.
Subaru’s go-anywhere wagon is a great value at less than $30,000 with standard all-wheel-drive.
Drivetrains: Four and sixcylinder engines are connected to continuously variable transmissions, only; standard all-wheel-drive is the Subaru way, of course.

At one time, Volvo had the market cornered when it came to spacious, yet unpretentious all-wheel-drive wagons. They still know how to make ‘em, but now Subaru is solidly in the driver’s seat with the ever-popular Outback wagon. For the 2015 model year, the Legacy-sedan-based Outback received a number of critical updates. Visually, the car was given a revised grille, lightweight aluminum hood, reshaped headlights and door-mounted mirror. The upgrades continued inside, with a quieter cabin, a reshaped dashboard, larger front seats and a more cavernous floor console. The suspension was also retuned and Subaru added Active Torque Vectoring that applies slight brake pressure to the inside front wheel during a turn. The base 2.5-litre four-cylinder engine is rated at 175 horsepower and 174 pound-feet of torque. The optional 3.6-litre six-cylinder continues makes 256 horsepower and 247 pound-feet. The four-cylinder can be ordered with six-speed manual transmission, while a continuously variable transmission (CVT) is optional, but standard with the sixcylinder models. A driver-controlled X-Mode for the standard allwheel-drive system adjusts the transmission and engine output to reduce wheelspin. X-Mode also includes Hill Descent Control, which keeps vehicle speed to a crawl when traveling slowly down a step and slippery slope. Incline Start Assist briefly holds the vehicle when starting on hills, while a Hill Holder System prevents the Outback from rolling backward when stopped, until the accelerator is pressed. When combined with the Outback’s 22-centimetre ground clearance, X-Mode makes the Outback more fit for rugged off-road duty.
TECHNICAL SPECIFICATIONS Base price (incl. destination): $27,650 Type: Four-door wagon Base engine (hp): 2.5-litre DOHC H4 (170) Optional engine (hp): 2.0-litre DOHC H4, turbocharged (250) Layout: Front engine, all-wheel-drive Transmissions: Six-speed manual; continuously variable with opt. paddle shifters L/100 km (city/highway): 9.6/7.5 (2.5 non-turbo, CVT) Weight (kg): 1,510
On good roads and bad, the standard all-wheel-drive system operates virtually unnoticed. But when required, which is frequently in snow-belt regions, the vehicle’s mountain-goat capabilities make it a popular choice. The Forester’s platform offers sufficient distance between the front and rear wheels for plenty of legroom, while the tall roofline and low-rise load floor make for generous storage space with the split-folding rear seat folded flat. The base 2.5-litre four-cylinder engine produces 170 horsepower and 174 pound-feet of torque. For added punch, the 2.0XT uses a turbocharged version of the 2.0-litre non-turbo four-cylinder used in the BRZ sports coupe that’s rated at 250 horsepower and 258 pound-feet. The 2.5i Forester runs with a six-speed manual transmission or a continuously variable (CVT) option. The 2.0XT only comes with the CVT, but it has what Subaru calls an “engine performance management system” with Intelligent, Sport and Sport Sharp settings. In Sport mode, the throttle becomes more responsive and the steering-column-mounted paddle shifters mimic the action of a six-speed transmission. Throttle response is further heightened in Sport Sharp mode, but the CVT provides eight “speeds” to play with. This is possible because the CVT actually has no set ratios and can be programmed to act differently at different times. Standard in the 2.0XT and available in the 2.5i with the CVT is Subaru’s X-Mode control. When activated below 20 km-h, the system adds greater control on slippery surfaces by shifting torque specifically to the wheels with grip, either front to back or side to side.

HONDA CIVIC
What Honda vehicle seats up to eight passengers, has moving-van stowage capacity and comes with a standard V6 engine?
Honda classes up its compactcar act with sharp-looking 10th-generation sedan and coupe models, available with a plethora of high-tech gear. Coupe arrives mid-season; hatchback and Si versions arrive later, followed by potent Type R.
Drivetrain: The usual V6 is backed by six- and nine-speed automatic transmissions; front and all-wheel-drive.

Honda’s third-generation Pilot sheds its previous boxy structure that made it look the part of a proper boulder basher. The automaker has determined that a softened appearance will broaden the Pilot’s already broad appeal. That same approach has worked well with the Toyota Highlander, Nissan Pathfinder and Chevrolet Traverse, whose utility also caters to family life. The new Pilot grows by nine centimetres in overall length and by nearly two inches between the front and rear wheels. The roofline is slightly lower for improved aerodynamics. The changes mean a bit more passenger legroom plus slightly more room behind the third-row seat. The rear side door openings make third-row access a bit easier while pushbuttons on the outer edges of the second-row bench, or newly optional individual high-back chairs, make them super easy to slide and tilt forward. The engine is the latest rendition of Honda’s 3.5-litre V6 that makes 280 horsepower and 262 pound-feet of torque, up from the previous 250/253 rating. Base models come with a six-speed automatic transmission, while topend versions employ a nine-speed transmission. All-wheel-drive is optional with LX, EX and EX-L but standard with Touring. Unlike most competing systems, the AWD can direct 100 per cent of the rear torque to the outside wheel while turning, without applying braking force to the inside wheel. The resulting “torque vectoring” creates more corning control/stability with reduced understeer (the natural tendency for the vehicle to travel in a straight line when the steering wheel is turned). AWD-equipped Pilots also have “Intelligent Traction Management” that lets the driver vary torque delivery to the four wheels via Normal, Snow, Mud and Sand settings. Over the road, a combination of less heft, more power, and AWD improvements provide the Pilot with impressive acceleration with a noticeable crispness in the turns, which is a quality that many of its competitors lack. We’re not talking sports car-like by any means, but the Pilot’s sharpness is reassuring.
Among other small hatchback wagons, the HR-V is generously mid-sized.
TECHNICAL SPECIFICATIONS Base price (incl. destination): $22,400 Type: Four-door compact wagon Base engine (hp): 1.8-litre SOHC I4 (141) Layout: Front engine, front-/all-wheel-drive Transmissions: Six-/nine-speed manual, continuously variable (CVT) L/100 km (city/highway): 8.3/6.7 (CVT, FWD) Weight (kg): 1,315
Honda introduced the 2016 Civic coupe and sedan during a livestreaming press conference in September, only to leave out pretty much every significant detail, from power and options, to price. That info will come out in due course, but for now it’s known that a 2.0-litre fourcylinder will be the standard engine on Civic LX and EX models, while a turbocharged 1.5-litre four-cylinder (the first turbo engine in a Honda product to be sold in North America) will find its way inside the premium EX-T, Ex-L and Touring trim levels. A six-speed manual transmission and optional continuously variable unit (CVT) can be matched to the 2.0, while the 1.5 turbo gets its own unique CVT. The Civic sedan grows by 3.0 centimetres in wheelbase, is 5.1 centimetres wider and sits 2.5 centimetres closer to the ground. These changes will make the Civic the roomiest in the compact-sedan class, says Honda. The coupe’s dimensions should similarly increase, but Honda isn’t launching it until mid-way into the 2016 model year. At that time it’s expected that an all-new Civic hatchback will arrive and hot Si coupe and sedan will also return. Meanwhile, the sedan’s new platform is now 25 per cent stiffer while dropping a bit of weight. Among the list of available new features is a full range of crash-avoiding software that falls under the Honda Sensing label. These include forwardcollision and road-departure warnings and adaptive cruise control that slows down or stops the vehicle in stop-and-go driving situations.
HONDA CR-V Honda’s perennially popular compact wagon is a fan favourite for its comfort, roominess and available all-wheel-drive capability.
Drivetrain: A small-ish fourcylinder produces modest output, but shuns fuel pumps; manual or CVT transmission choices. Think of the HR-V as the middle child of Honda’s small wagon lineup. In length it’s exactly half way between the larger Honda CR-V and the smaller Fit. The vehicle’s sloping roofline is more hatchback than wagon, but in terms of cargo volume, the HR-V beats the Hyundai Tucson and Kia Sportage and is significantly ahead on volume compared to the Chevrolet Trax and Jeep Renegade. The HR-V shares the Fit’s chassis and is built at the same plant in Mexico. Among other things, it means that the fuel tank is located in the center of the vehicle beneath the front seats, allowing for a flat floor and ample legroom for rear-seat passengers. As with the Fit, the back seat-cushion folds up, which comes in handy when transporting tall objects. The HR-V’s 1.8-litre four-cylinder produces 141 horsepower and 127 pound-feet of torque. It connects to a six-speed manual transmission or optional continuously variable unit (CVT) with optional paddle shifters that control seven pre-set ratios. The optional all-wheel-drive stands ready to shift torque to the rear wheels if the fronts begin to slip. Note that models with AWD must have the CVT. The base LX trim arrives with an impressive level of content including climate control, heated front seats, seven-inch touch-screen display that controls the audio and communications systems, rearview camera, electric parking brake, 160-watt audio system and 17-inch alloy wheels. The EX adds dual-zone climate control, a power moonroof, push-button start, 180-watt stereo, fog lights and Honda’s camera-based LaneWatch system that displays side views of approaching traffic whenever the turn signals are activated. Atop the HR-V’s trims, the EX-L Navi has leather seat covers, roof rails, an autodimming rearview mirror, forward collision and lane-departure warnings and of course navigation. Even fully loaded, you can drive a HR-V home for about 32 grand, which is reason enough to scope one out.
Drivetrains: A non-turbo 2.0-litre four-cylinder is standard on lower trim levels; new turbo four-cylinder on up-level models makes more horsepower and torque and will also be the fuel-economy champ; six-speed manual, or optional continuously variable transmissions.
Drivetrain: A torquey 2.4-litre four-cylinder engine makes 185 horsepower; a continuously variable transmission is standard; all-wheeldrive available on all iterations.
TECHNICAL SPECIFICATIONS Base price (incl. destination): $27,700 Type: Four-door compact sport-utility vehicle Engine (hp): 2.4-litre DOHC I4 (185) Layout: Front engine, front-/all-wheel-drive Transmission: Continuously variable (CVT) L/100 km (city/highway): 8.6/6.9 (FWD) Weight (kg): 1,530
The CR-V has established itself as a can-do wagon that combines smart looks, lively performance and impressive fuel economy. For 2015, it received a new front fascia (grille, bumper and headlight pods), taillights and wheel designs. It was also given a new dash and floor console layout with more soft-touch materials for the door panels. Mechanically, an upgrade to direct injection (fuel sprayed under high pressure directly into the cylinders instead of through the intake manifold) for the CR-V’s 2.4-litre four-cylinder engine yielded a torque increase to 181 pound-feet from the previous 163, but without a horsepower increase. A continuously variable transmission replaced the previous five-speed automatic. These changes have helped keep the CR-V at the top of a category collective that encompasses the Ford Escape, Toyota RAV4 and Nissan Rogue. Undoubtedly, the CR-V’s passenger comfort and generous cargo capacity have also helped keep it at the forefront, as does a rear seat that folds by flipping a pair of levers located just inside the liftgate. Access through the rear makes it easy to load large/ bulky items onto a flat load floor that can be extended to more than five feet. Base models come with a centre console armrest, sliding sun visors and rear console ventilation ducts. The EX adds a power moonroof, fog lights and a few other niceties. Popping for the EX-L gets you leather seat covers, 10-way heated driver’s seat, up-level audio system and access to the optional navigation system. Honda’s top-line Touring trim level includes leading-edge safety aids such as Adaptive Cruise Control, Forward Collision and lane-departure Warning and Lane Keeping Assist. A navigation system and a power tailgate are also part of the Touring package.

KIA SOUL SX
2016
KIA FORTE SE In a world awash in automotive conformity, the compact Forte sedan and the Forte5 wagon derivative are distinctive in their styling and performance.
The Soul’s popularity stems from its unique design, extra-roomy cabin and cargo area and an affordable price tag.
Drivetrain: A 145-horsepower 1.8-litre four-cylinder serves as the sedan’s base offering; Forte5 hatchback starts with a 173-hp 2.0 (optional in the sedan), or available 201-horsepower 1.6-litre turbo.
Drivetrain: Base 1.6-litre fourcylinder shared with the Rio; 2.0 option adds passing power; six-speed transmissions; Soul EV’s maximum battery range approaches 150 kms.
The Forte sedan and hatch models were redesigned for 2014 and sail into 2016 unaltered. Kia star TECHNICAL stylist Peter Schreyer, who has a knack for creating organically SPECIFICATIONS shaped sheetmetal that clicks with buyers, oversaw the design for both vehicles in addition to the sporty Forte Koup. The base sedan Base price (incl. destination): runs with 1.8-litre four-cylinder that pumps out 145 horsepower and $17,500 (sedan); 130 pound-feet of torque, while an optional 2.0-litre four-cylinder $21,100 (Forte5) produces 173 horsepower and 154 pound-feet. For Forte5 hatchback Type: Four-door, front-wheelbuyers, the 2.0 is standard while a turbocharged 1.6-litre four cylinder drive compact sedan/hatchback is optional. It spools out 201 horsepower and 195 pound-feet of torque. A six-speed manual transmission is standard for all, while a Base engine (hp): six-speed automatic is optional. Spending time aboard the Forte or 1.8-litre DOHC I4 (145) Optional engine (hp): 2.0-litre Forte5 will prove comforting for passengers and especially pleasing for the driver who faces a clearly legible, intuitively laid-out dashboard DOHC I4 (173); 1.6-litre DOHC and control panel. He or she also has command over the level of I4, turbocharged (201) steering effort with the Forte’s optional Flex Steer system. With it, Layout: Front engine, the electric power steering can be adjusted to Comfort, Normal and front-wheel-drive Sport settings, with the latter offering the least amount of assist. The Transmissions: Forte comes in three trim levels in Canada. The starting-point LX leans to the simpler side of the ledger with its smaller engine, 16-inch Six-speed manual; steel wheels, basic audio system and the lack of air conditioning. Six-speed automatic; Both models top out at the SX that features climate control, larger L/100 km (city/highway): front brakes pushbutton start and 18-inch alloys. Luxury packages for 8.8/6.1 (1.8, MT) both models add a navigation system, heated front and rear leatherWeight (kg): 1,270 covered seats, sunroof and a heated steering wheel.
The Soul is one of those hard-todescribe cars that owes its popularity to the way it looks as much as how much it can carry and how much is TECHNICAL costs. In its most-recent 2014 updating, the cabin was slightly enlarged in SPECIFICATIONS front to create additional head and shoulder room, while similar alterations in back contributed more legroom. In addition the dashboard was revised Base price to accommodate an available 20-centimetre touch screen. The platform (incl. destination): was made 29 per cent stiffer and accommodates a suspension that was $18,700; $36,700 (Soul EV) reengineered for improved ride and handling. Outside, design details Type: Four-door, front-wheel- inspired by the Soul-based Trax’ster concept provided the basis for a drive compact tall wagon front and rear facelift that makes the Soul much more appealing. The rear liftgate was made six centimetres wider and is now flanked by one Base engine (hp): of the coolest set of taillights ever installed on any vehicle. The entry1.6-litre DOHC I4 (130) level LX Soul is equipped with a 1.6-litre four-cylinder that produces 130 Optional engine (hp): 2.0-litre DOHC I4 (164); 90- horsepower and 118 pound-feet of torque, while the optional 2.0-litre four-cylinder in the EX and SX models delivers the same 164 horses kilowatt electric motor (109) and 151 pound-feet. The 1.6 uses a six-speed manual transmission or Layout: Front engine, an available six-speed automatic, while the 2.0 is only available with the front-wheel-drive automatic. FORD ESCAPE
2016
FORD EDGE The second-generation Ford Edge makes all the right moves, especially in Sport trim.
Given how popular Ford’s small and tall Escape has proven to be, is there any wonder they haven’t been altered much for 2016?
Drivetrain: Four-cylinder and V6 turbo engines plus a non-turbo V6 give you a wide choice of power options; all with six-speed automatic transmissions and available all-wheel-drive.
TECHNICAL SPECIFICATIONS Base price (incl. destination): $33,650 Type: Four-door tall wagon Base engine (hp): 2.0-litre DOHC I4, turbocharged (245) Optional engines (hp): 2.7-litre DOHC V6, turbocharged (325); 3.5-litre DOHC V6 (285) Layout: Front-engine, front- /allwheel-drive Transmission: Six-speed automatic L/100 km (city/hwy): 11.5/7.8 (2.0) Weight (kg): 1,780
The sexy 2016 Edge arrives with a 245-horsepower 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder as the base engine. It can be had with all-wheel-drive and can muscle up to 1,590 kilograms of trailer weight. Also on board is a twin-turbocharged 325-horsepower 2.7-litre V6 that’s standard in the appropriately named Edge Sport, and optional in the premium Titanium trim level. The Sport’s previous 305-horsepower 3.7-litre V6 gets the boot. Sandwiched between the two turbo engines is the returning (and now optional) 285-horsepower 3.5-litre V6. All three are mated to sixspeed automatic transmissions with paddle-shift controls. A sport setting lets the engine rev to a higher limit in each gear for more spirited driving. Normal and Sport modes are also part of the Edge’s adaptive-steering system. It makes it easier to park in a tight spot while being more responsive during high-speed maneuvering. The optional all-wheel-drive system can direct up to 100 per cent of the torque to either the front or rear axles, as needed. The engine lineup might be the Edge’s major drawing card, but there are additional obvious and unseen changes to report. A hexagonal-shaped grille softens the Edge’s look while the roofline is more swept and the LED taillights are narrower and extend into the liftgate. The body panels are attached to an equally new platform that originated with the current Ford Fusion and is considerably more resistant to bending and twisting. The passenger space has been designed with more supportive seats, more storage bins and cubbys and an eight-inch touch-screen for the audio, infotainment, navigation and climate controls. The most basic of the Edge’s four trim levels has plenty of comfort content. Among the more intriguing is a 180-degree front camera that scans for unseen crosstraffic at intersections. Ford should pat itself on the back for how well embraced its latest compact Escape has been. The radically different sheetmetal is another reason why it’s easier to spot. The interior is inviting, with an attractively segmented gauge/ control panel with asymmetric air vents. The floor shifter’s position at the base of the dashboard partially blocks the heating/ventilation controls, but it makes the area designated for cupholders and armrest/storage more accessible. The up-level Titanium model features well-bolstered front seats that are a major advancement over that of earlier Escapes. The base front-wheel-drive S model runs with a 168-horsepower 2.5-litre four-cylinder, while the front- and all-wheel-drive SE designation uses a 178-horsepower 1.6-litre turbocharged “EcoBoost” four-cylinder. A 237-horsepower turbo four-cylinder (also from Ford’s “EcoBoost” engine lineup) is standard in the SEL and Titanium trims. A six-speed automatic transmission (with a detent for manual gear selection) is the sole choice. The optional all-wheel-drive system continually assesses road conditions and driver inputs “about 20 times faster than the blink of an eye” and can shift up to 100 per cent of the available power to either the front or rear wheels for maximum grip. The Escape was the first Ford to offer both Torque Vectoring Control and Curve Control to help distribute the correct amount of power to each wheel when cornering so that the vehicle maintains its intended path. The new-tech gear extends to the option sheet, which is understandably lengthy. But the most unique option is the power liftgate that automatically opens and closes when you shake your foot hokey pokey-style beneath the bumper (great when your hands are full of kids and/ or groceries). For 2016, Escape can be ordered with Ford’s third-generation SYNC infotainment system, which includes a 6.5-inch touch screen that uses the swipes and pinches that will be familiar to smart-phone users.

FORD F-150
Drivetrain: Plenty of engine choices, all of the four-cylinder variety in the name of fuel economy.
After being retooled from top to bottom for 2015 to be stronger, faster and lighter thanks to an aluminum body, the F-150 will now make it easier than ever to park like a pro.
Ford’s updated mainstream compact is now available in a, rally-ready, all-wheel-drive RS super hatch; fuel-sipping threecylinder engine, ST performance and electric powertrains continue.
Drivetrain: The V6 and V8 engines are joined by two turbocharged “EcoBoost” V6s; all receive six-speed automatic transmissions; four-wheeldrive optional, of course; dune-jumping second-generation dune-busting Raptor is on the horizon.
Drivetrain: 160-horsepower 2.0litre four-cylinder connected to a fivespeed manual transmission or optional six-speed automated manual; 1.0-litre three-cylinder turbo with a six-speed manual; ST still uses big turbo and extra gear to handle 252 horses; optional all-electric drivetrain with 143-horsepower motor; Mustang-sourced turbo-four gives amazing 350 horses for the AWD in the new RS.
Ford’s switch from steel to more dent- and ding- and rust-averse aluminum body panels saved as much as 320 kilograms (Ford claims), depending on whether you’re talking about regular-, extended SuperCab or four-door SuperCrew versions. All are Base price perched on a new ladder-type frame that’s also stronger and actually lighter by a (incl. destination): $26,900 few kilograms. The reduced heft allows properly kitted-out F-150s to tote and tow Type: Two- /four-door pickup bigger payloads, which is what pickup trucks are all about, right? For 2016, a new Base engine (hp): 3.5-litre optional Pro Trailer Backup system combines a revised rear-view camera with more helpful lines on the display and a standalone knob that drivers can twist back and DOHC V6 (283) forth to guide the truck exactly where it needs to go. The system is similar to Ford’s Optional engines (hp): self-parking technology, which means you don’t have to use the steering wheel. 2.7-litre DOHC V6; Under the hood, base trucks come with a 3.5-litre V6 with 283 horsepower and 255 turbocharged (325); 3.5-litre pound-feet of torque, while a twin-turbo 2.7-litre V6 that’s rated at 325 horsepower DOHC V6, turbocharged (365); and 375 pound-feet of torque is optional. Carried over from last year are two of 5.0-litre DOHC V8 (385) Ford’s workhorse powerplants: a 3.5-litre twin-turbocharged V6 producing 365 horsepower and 420 pound-feet of torque; and a 5.0-litre V8 worth 385 horsepower Layout: Front-engine, and 387 pound-feet of torque. The old 6.2-litre V8 that was standard in the wayrear- /four-wheel-drive off-road-capable SVT Raptor has been dropped, with the second-gen Baja bruiser Transmissions: getting a version of the all-new 600-horsepower 3.5-litre twin-turbo V6 found in the Six-speed automatic stunning Ford GT supercar. Inside, the cabin, or “office” for many truck owners, was L/100 km (city/highway): completely transformed and in up-level models approaches luxury-car standards, 12.2/9.2 (3.5, 4x2) particularly the Lariat and King Ranch trims. The FX4 off-road option package (firmer Weight (kg): 2,045 suspension, skid plates and a locking rear axle) can be added to most 4x4 models.
TECHNICAL SPECIFICATIONS Base price (incl. destination): $18,500 Type: Four-door sedan; four-door hatchback Base engine (hp): 2.0-litre DOHC I4 (160) Optional engines (hp): 1.0 -litre DOHC I3, turbocharged (123); 2.0-litre DOHC I4, turbocharged (252); 2.3-litre DOHC I4, turbocharged (350) Layout: Front-engine, front- /all-wheel-drive Transmission: Five-speed manual; six-speed manual (1.0; ST; RS); six-speed automated manual (opt.); L/100 km (city/hwy): 9.3/6.7 (1.0.MT) Weight (kg): 2,910
The latest generation Focus RS follows much of the same recipe, including a wild body kit, stiff suspension, giant wheels and super-sticky tires. Also logical is the Mustang-sourced 2.3-litre turbocharged “EcoBoost” four-cylinder that produces an incredible 350 horsepower and 350 pound-feet of torque. The RS only comes with a six-speed manual transmission and all-wheel drive. That means a zero-to-60-mph (96 km-h) time of about 4.5 seconds and a top speed of 160 mph. The AWD system includes four driving modes to suit location and conditions, including Sport, Track and a special Drift mode that allows for serious sideways driving. Its price (estimated to be in the mid-$40,000 range) is about double the price of the base cars, but should be worth a look as it promises to be as much or more fun than a V8-powered Mustang. The remaining Focus range continues unchanged, including the 1.0-litre threecylinder turbocharged “EcoBoost” engine with 123 horsepower and 148 pound-feet of torque. Now playing the middle ground, the ST performance model is aimed at buyers who otherwise might be in the mood for a Volkswagen GTI. The 2.0-litre “EcoBoost” turbocharged four-cylinder produces 252 horsepower and even features “overboost” with a giant slug of mid-range torque added. The ST is still front-wheel-drive, but uses a stiffer suspension, bigger and stickier tires and a variety of electronic systems to make it a true back-road hero.

RAM 1500
2016
2016
DODGE JOURNEY Dodge’s flexible and clever Journey tall wagon gets simplified and better equipped for 2016.
Ram offers the most attractive and clever touches in the light-duty class; two new models aimed at the ultra-lux and desert-running set. Drivetrain: Chrysler’s 3.6-litre V6 and 5.7-litre “Hemi” V8 still joined by 3.0litre “EcoDiesel” V6; eight-speed automatic transmission and other countermeasures help Ram reduce fuel consumption to respectable levels.
Drivetrain: An older 173-horsepower four-cylinder engine and a significantly more impressive 283-horsepower V6 carry over; automatic transmissions all around and all-wheel-drive offered in V6 versions.
TECHNICAL SPECIFICATIONS Base price (incl. destination): $21,200 Type: Four-door tall wagon Base engine (hp): 2.4-litre DOHC I4 (173) Optional engine (hp): 3.6-litre DOHC V6 (283) Layout: Front-engine, front/all-wheel-drive Transmission: Four-speed automatic; six-speed automatic (3.6) L/100 km (city/hwy): 19/26 (2.4, FWD) Weight (kg): 1,730
The Journey scores a hole-in-one as a practical, efficient and affordable carrier. It has just-right sizing going for it, which means it’s bigger than the Mitsubishi Outlander but more compact than a Chevrolet Traverse or Ford Explorer. The latter offer standard or optional third-row seating, but all are considerably more expensive than the $21,200-base-price Journey. In Canada Value Package trim, it provides seating for five people, although there’s an available two-place third-row 50:50 split bench on other trim levels. There are also some other clever interior storage options such as a front passenger seat with a flip-forward hinged cushion that’s ideal for concealing cameras, purses and other valuables. And all models have two in-floor storage compartments with removable plastic liners behind the front seats that are large enough to hold a dozen beverage cans each, plus ice. And don’t forget the available chilled storage bin inside the glove compartment that can keep a couple of cool beverages at the ready. The Journey uses a 173-horsepower 2.4-litre fourcylinder with four-speed automatic in base models. Optional is a 283-horsepower 3.6-litre V6 with a six-speed auto. For 2016, there are a grand total of eight trim levels, which means there’s likely a Journey for every taste, need and pretty much every budget. Base Journey equipment includes air conditioning keyless remote entry, power windows, locks and mirrors and a complete range of safety gear. Up-level models offer leather seating surfaces, roof rack, backup camera, navigation system, 19-inch wheels and a flashlight stored in the cargo area. Most Journeys are now front-wheel-drive with all-wheel-drive exclusively in the top-line R/T and the Crossroad. The system automatically kicks in to direct power to the rear wheels when needed, including slippery mud and snow conditions as well as when the vehicle is accelerating up to 110 km-h. The new Crossroad model is easily recognizable with its blacked-out wheels and trim.
TECHNICAL SPECIFICATIONS Base price (incl. destination): $25,700 Type: Four-door compact tall wagon Base engine (hp): 2.5-litre DOHC I4 (168) Optional engines (hp): 1.6-litre DOHC I4, turbocharged (173); 2.0-litre DOHC I4, turbocharged (237) Layout: Front-engine, front- /four-wheel-drive Transmission: Six-speed automatic L/100 km (city/highway): 10.9/7.6 (2.5, FWD) Weight (kg): 1,590
After a few years of the macho Ram 1500 trumpeting its excellent fuel economy, the pickup has been given a couple more traditional pickup topics to crow about. First is the return of the Laramie Limited, which has fewer cowboy-themed bits than the equally luxurious Laramie Longhorn and is aimed at Ford’s Platinum and GMC’s Denali. There’s special materials, silver pinstripes, dark wood and (gasp!) berber carpets. The second model is the Rebel, which has a can’t-miss RAM badge across the front and similar treatment on the tailgate. There are also lots of black powdercoated bits, along with some additional skid plates, tow hooks and new 17-inch wheels. For 20016, you’ll find the same trio of engines. Chrysler’s ever-popular 3.6litre V6 offers 305 horsepower. Its eight-speed automatic transmission also helped and it can now also be attached to the 395-horsepower 5.7-litre “Hemi” V8. The most unique engine is the optional 3.0-litre “EcoDiesel” V6, which makes the Ram 1500 the only light-duty full-size diesel pickup in North America . . . so far. Using 240 horsepower and 420 pound-feet of torque with the eight-speed automatic, it can tow 4,180 kilograms. The regular V6 can tug 3,390 kilograms. As for body styles, regularcab models are available with a six-foot, four-inch (1.8-metre) box, or an eight-footer (1.9-metre), while Quad Cabs get the shorter box only. The larger four-door Ram Crew gets you a 5’7” (1.7-metre) bed, or the 6’4” (1.8-metre) bed option. There are also available locking storage compartments built into the rear fenders that can each hold up to 120 12-ounce (350-ml) cans that can be specified with centrally controlled power locks. When it comes to four-wheel-drive, buyers can choose between a part-time system and an on-demand setup that automatically engages when road conditions warrant. Other neat touches include a capless fuel-filler system and a front-park assist that’ll parallel park the beast into incredibly tight spots.
Simple DEFENSIVE DRIVING techniques anyone can employ Driving defensively is a great way for motorists to reduce their risks of accident, maintain their vehicles over the long haul and save money on their auto insurance. But driving can be habit-forming, and over time many drivers develop habits that can compromise their safety on the road. No driver wants to make roads less safe, and many may just need to reacquaint themselves with the following defensive driving techniques they learned way back when they first started driving as teenagers. ■ Avoid distractions. Older drivers didn’t have too many things to distract them from the road, but nowadays it’s easy to be distracted whether you’re driving alone on an empty road or sitting in rush hour traffic with dozens of your fellow commuters. That’s because today’s vehicles may be equipped with televisions, smartphone hookups and high-quality sound systems that can take drivers’ attention away from the road. Drivers may even be bringing additional distractions with them into their vehicles.
When getting behind the wheel, keep your stereo speakers low and turn off all of your devices so you aren’t tempted to check emails or text messages while driving. ■ Don’t be in such a hurry. Perhaps the most effective defensive driving technique is to slow down when on the road. That’s easier said than done, especially for commuters who are running late and trying to get to the office on time. But making a conscious effort to slow down, even if you are a few minutes late for work or running late for an appointment, can mean the difference between getting into an accident or staying safe on the road. If you know you are running late, don’t try to compensate by driving fast. Instead, call ahead to let whoever might be waiting for you know that you will be a few minutes late. ■ Don’t lane hop. Frequent switching between lanes can make other drivers nervous, increasing the risk of an accident. In addition, sudden or frequent lane changes can make it difficult for drivers to maintain their focus on the
road and see more than a few cars ahead of them. Drivers who have been on the road for a long time may feel confident in their abilities to quickly switch between lanes, but fellow motorists may find such shifting distracting and begin to drive erratically as a result. Stay in one lane as long as possible, and only pass cars on the left. ■ Don’t respond to aggressive drivers. If a fellow driver is driving aggressively, slow down and let them pass or pull over and let them get far away from you before you return to the roadway. Studies have indicated that road rage incidents escalate when drivers make eye contact with one another. Even if you are not at fault, it’s up to you to avoid a potentially dangerous situation and protect yourself and your passengers.
Defensive driving techniques reduce the risk of accidents and help to keep cars running strong over the long haul. Drivers can benefit from periodically revisiting such techniques and practicing them on roadways.

JEEP CHEROKEE Even three years in, Cherokee basks in its glorious return as Jeep hasn’t needed to change anything yet; still top-notch at navigating difficult on- and offroad terrain. Drivetrain: A Fiat-based 2.4litre four-cylinder is supplemented by a 3.2-litre-V6 option; standard ninespeed automatic transmission helps reduce fuel consumption.
TECHNICAL SPECIFICATIONS Base price (incl. destination): $27,100 Type: Four-door sport-utility vehicle Base engine (hp): 2.4-litre DOHC I4 (184) Optional engine (hp): 3.2-litre DOHC V6 (271) Layout: Front-engine, rear- /four-wheel-drive Transmission: Nine-speed automatic L/100 km (city/hwy): 10.9/7.7 (2.4 FWD) Weight (kg): 1,640
The Cherokee interior is as modern as the outside, although now includes reshaped front seats, a revised instrument cluster and tilt steering column that’s easier to use. All but the most basic Cherokee models feature 5.0- or 8.4-inch touch-screens (depending on the trim level) that operate climate, communications and infotainment systems. Base models get a Fiat-designed 184-horsepower 2.4-litre four-cylinder. Optional is a 271 horsepower 3.2-litre V6 that’s a subset of Chrysler’s 3.6-litre V6 that’s the base engine in the larger Jeep Grand Cherokee and the Ram pickup. In the Cherokee’s case, ordering the V6 provides a 2,045-kilogram towing capacity. Both engines are connected to nine-speed automatic transmissions, which is the first use of that gear changer in any Chrysler product. Front-wheeldrive is the norm, but buyers can choose from three different four-wheeldrive setups, depending on trim level. Active Drive I, optional in the Sport, North and Limited editions, is a single-speed unit that kicks in automatically whenever tire slip is detected. Active Drive II, also available in the same models, comes with a two-speed transfer case that’s designed for off-road use with either the four- or six-cylinder engines. For rock crawling and boulder hopping, Active Drive Lock, as the name implies, locks up the rear differential in low range. This system is standard in the Cherokee Trailhawk, which is a “Trail Rated” rig outfitted with an off-road suspension (increases ride height by 2.5 centimetres), skid plates, unique alloy wheels with allterrain rubber, blacked-out trim and a full-size spare tire. All 4x4 systems include Selec-Terrain traction control with five different settings to match the kind of ground you’re covering (snow, sand, mud, etc.).

The basics of driving with trailers in tow Active adults and busy families understand that one perk to owning a pickup truck or an SUV is the ability to tow items behind the vehicle. Many of these trucks already come equipped with trailer hitches that make it possible to tow boats, RVs, snowmobiles and more. But safe and successful towing requires knowledge of the basics of hitching a trailer and some special rules of the road. The following are a few safety tips for drivers unaccustomed to towing. Know your vehicle’s tow weight capacity. The owner’s manual will list the maximum weight a vehicle can tow safely, but this is just a simplified estimation of data. To tow successfully, it’s important to know your vehicle’s gross combined weight rating, or GCWR. This includes the vehicle itself, its passengers and cargo, as well as the trailer and the trailer’s cargo. More passengers on board reduces the amount of weight you can pull. Another weight factor is the tongue weight, or how much of the trailer’s weight rests on the hitch, which should be around 10
percent of the trailer’s weight. This helps reduce trailer sway and can improve steering. Practice proper weight distribution. Distribute the weight of the item being towed to make towing smoother and safer. The cargo’s center of gravity should be low, and most of the weight should be toward the front. Weight on either side also should be even. These steps will help prevent the trailer from fishtailing or flipping over. Use the right hitch equipment. Adjust the hitch so that the trailer being towed is relatively level to your vehicle when attached. Connect lights to your trailer through the hitch system so that brake lights and other indicators work properly. Make sure the hitch ball is the right size for your trailer, otherwise the trailer might disconnect during towing. Use a pin and safety chains to keep the trailer secure. Check if extra brakes are required. Many states require a separate braking system on towed vehicles with a loaded weight in excess of 1,000 pounds. Newer trucks may have a built-in
controller for brakes or you may need to have a system installed. Experts from Popular Mechanics advise using a trailer brake output system that Safely and successfully matches the driving with a trailer takes practice and patience. trailer brake output to the and not tip over. tow vehicle’s deceleration. The mere mention of winter driving brings to mind blizzard conditions, cars in ditches and unexpected engine problems. Preparing an emergency kit is a great way to ensure your peace of mind when heading out to tackle those icy roads. Make sure you keep a complete winter-driving emergency kit in your car trunk. It should contain the following items: • A shovel, scraper and snow brush • Bottled water and non-perishable foods (energy bars) • Matches stored in a watertight package • Booster cables • Blankets • Flares • A warm change of clothes for all family members • Windshield washer fluid • Salt, sand or non-clumping cat litter • A tow cable • A knife (to cut a jammed seat belt) • A fire extinguisher designed for
gasoline and oil fires • An up-to-date and illustrated first-aid manual • A whistle (to signal your location in low-visibility conditions) • A candle in a deep metal can • A hand-crank flashlight or battery-powered flashlight with extra batteries • A first-aid kit containing antiseptic swabs, compresses, gloves, bandages, scissors, safety pins and tweezers. This long list may seem rather extreme right now, but if a breakdown or accident happens, you’ll be glad you were so well organized. And don’t forget that you can also use this emergency kit to help other people who are in trouble.

HYUNDAI SANTA FE
2016
HYUNDAI TUCSON
This mid-sized tall wagon is available in regular- and extended-length versions, with five- or seven-passenger capacity, respectively.
The Tucson is poised to go from contender to leader in the compact tall-wagon class. Drivetrain: A choice of non-turbo or turbo engine, the latter comes with AWD.
TECHNICAL SPECIFICATIONS Base price (incl. destination): $26,200 Type: Four-door, sub-compact wagon Base engine (hp): 2.0-litre DOHC I4 (164) Optional engine (hp): 1.6-litre DOHC I4, turbocharged (175) Layout: Front engine, front-/all-wheel-drive Transmissions: Six-speed automatic; seven-speed automated manual (opt.) L/100 km (city/highway): 10.1/7.6 (2.0, FWD) Weight (kg): 1,635
In a field dominated by the Honda CR-V, Ford Escape, Nissan Rogue, Mazda CX-5 and Toyota RAV4, buyers aren’t lacking for choice. The Tucson’s design mimics that of the larger Santa Fe, especially when it comes to the trapezoidal grille. The Hyundai gains 7.6 centimetres in overall length while the front and rear wheels are set 2.5 centimetres farther apart. Interior volume with the split-folding rear seat in place also increases by an impressive 20 per cent, but falls short of the league-leading Honda CR-V. The rear seat now reclines 37 degrees and the dashboard/control panel is now cleaner and more business-like. The base SE gets a 2.0-litre four-cylinder that makes 164 horsepower. Optional is a turbocharged 1.6-litre four-cylinder that delivers 175 horsepower. It replaces the previously optional non-turbo 2.4-litre four-cylinder rated at 182 horses. A six-speed automatic transmission connects to the 2.0, while a segment-exclusive seven-speed automated manual transmission is hooked to the turbo 1.6. All-wheel-drive is optional with the 2.0, but included with the turbo powerplant. The unit has an AWD lock control switch that lets you “hold” the torque split equally between the front and rear wheels for maximum traction on rough terrain. AWD can also direct extra torque to the outside rear wheel when the Tucson is turning, while at the same time applying light braking to the inside rear wheel. This “torque vectoring” makes for more stable cornering. For improved ride comfort and control, Hyundai has stiffened the front and rear suspension attachment points, upgraded the engine mounts and bushings and increased the amount of sound insulation. All Tucsons come with the usual poweroperated features plus air conditioning. Depending on the trim level you can outfit the Tucson with heated and leather-covered front and rear seats, dual-zone climate control, panoramic sunroof and the latest collisionmitigating/avoidance technologies.
Drivetrain: The regular-length Santa Fe Sport uses a 2.4-litre four-cylinder or an optional turbocharged 2.0-litre fourcylinder; a 3.3-litre V6 is exclusive to the extended-length Santa Fe; six-speed automatics are standard for all versions, along with AWD availability.
TECHNICAL SPECIFICATIONS Base price (incl. destination): $29,500 (Sport); $33,000 (Santa Fe) Type: Four-door tall wagon Base engine (hp): 2.4-litre DOHC I4 (190) Optional engine (hp): 2.0-litre DOHC I4, turbocharged (264); 3.3-litre DOHC V6 (290) Layout: Front engine, front-/all-wheel-drive Transmissions: Six-speed automatic; L/100 km (city/highway): 11.7/8.7 (2.4, FWD) Weight (kg): 1,570
The Santa Fe tries to be all things to all families by offering both two- and three-row seating capacities. To accomplish this, the automaker makes the shorter-wheelbase Santa Fe Sport or the longer (by 21.6 centimetres) seven-passenger Santa Fe XL. The elongated version is heftier than the Sport by a good 1,820 kilograms, which explains why it’s only available with a 290-horsepower 3.3-litre V6. Conversely, the Sport comes with a base 190-horsepower 2.4-litre four-cylinder, or the optional 264-horsepower 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder. In all cases the sole transmission is a six-speed automatic with manual shift controls. Hyundai lets you add its latest all-wheel-drive setup with any Santa Fe you select. The system includes Torque Vectoring Corner Control (TVCC) that monitors driving conditions and can instantaneously direct the correct amount of power or braking force to any single wheel. TVCC assists in slippery conditions and provides added precision when negotiating turns. The Santa Fe comes with plenty of standard content plus unexpected treats, including Driver Selectable Steering Mode with Normal, Comfort (reduces steering effort by 10 per cent) and Sport settings (increases effort by the same amount). Turbo models add performance suspension components (stiffer shocks and thicker stabilizer bars), 19-inch wheels (17s are standard), fancier gauge cluster, push-button start and heated front seats. The up-level V6 Limited comes with a wider selection of available content over the base XL model, such as dual-zone climate control, leather seat covers, second-row captain’s chairs and blind-spot detection that alerts the driver if another vehicle is approaching the Santa Fe from either side.

CHEVROLET CRUZE
2016
2016
CHEVROLET CAMARO Chevrolet’s answer to the newfor-2015 Mustang is more power in a smaller and slightly lighter package.
Chevy’s second-generation compact is larger, lighter and sleeker. And if you choose, it can also be made more secure with the latest in active safety systems; a hatchback version will follow later.
Drivetrain: Base models are motivated by a turbocharged 2.0-litre four-cylinder; both the V6 and V8 return in beefed-up form; six-speed manual transmissions, or optional eight-speed automatics for all.
Base price (incl. destination): $31,700 (est.) Type: Two-door sports coupe/convertible Base engine (hp): 2.0-litre DOHC I4, turbocharged (275) Optional engines (hp): 3.6-litre DOHC V6 (335); 6.2-litre OHV V8 (455) Layout: Front-engine, rear-wheel-drive Transmissions: Six-speed manual; eight-speed automatic (opt.) BUICK ENCORE
Chevrolet’s two-year-old Silverado gets a mid-life facelift and continues to improve with better transmissions and more technology.
Buick wants the little Encore to resonate with more drivers, so the company is adding a more powerful engine in its new Sport Touring trim.
Drivetrain: Line of “Ecotec3” engines has direct fuel injection and variable valve timing for broader power range and improved economy; sixspeed automatic transmissions for base V6 engine, but both the middle 5.3-litre V8 and top-end 6.2 now use the eight-speed automatic.
TECHNICAL SPECIFICATIONS Base price (incl. destination): $29,750 Type: Full-size pickup Base engine (hp): 4.3-litre OHV V6 (285) Optional engines (hp): 5.3-litre OHV V8 (355); 6.2-litre OHV V8 (420) Layout: Front-engine, rear- /four-wheel-drive Transmission: Six-speed automatic; eight-speed automatic (5.3; 6.2) L/100 km (city/hwy): 13.4/9.9 (4.3) Weight (kg): 2,250
Only into its third model year and Chevrolet is giving its legendary Silverado line a good-old facelift. Chevrolet is giving its legendary Silverado line a good-old facelift. Upscale models will get LED running and fog lights, while high-intensitydischarge (HID) headlights are available. The front bumper and lower fascia are reshaped too, but the rest of the truck still looks familiar. Behind the tailgate, the handy “Corner Step” bumper has recessed footholds that, combined with builtin handholds inside the box, make accessing the bed much easier. All body styles -- regular, extended Double Cab (featuring front-hinged rear doors with outside handles) and four-door Crew Cab -- are attached to frames with lots of high-strength steel, extra bracing for stiffness and body mounts that help isolate road noise and vibration. You can order the Crew Cab with a longer 80-inch bed (the standard bed is 68 inches) and you’ll get a choice of three all-aluminum engines. The entry point is a 4.3-litre V6 that has the same displacement as the previous V6, but output has significantly increased to 285 horsepower and 305 pound-feet of torque from 195/260. Optional is a 5.3-litre V8 with 355 horses and 383 pound-feet. An available 6.2-litre V8 is rated at 420 horsepower and 440 pound-feet and shares much of its guts with the Corvette engine, but for 2016 both V8s get the Corvette’s eight-speed automatic transmission. The V6 carries over with a six-speed automatic. The best part about this truck is its highly optioned leather interior that places it above the previous top-of-the-line LTZ. Also for 2016 is an available built-in Wi-Fi hotspot to allow all aboard to access the Internet. There will also be support for both Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, along with more active safety technologies too.
The 2016 Chevrolet Cruze has tightened its belt to the tune of nearly 115 kilograms. That includes a 20-kilo reduction in engine weight from switching to aluminum from cast iron for the engine block and an 11-kilogram-lighter automatic transmission. The car’s basic architecture and suspension components have also slimed down. The Cruze’s sheetmetal is now among the more elegant in a compact-sedan class that includes some heavy hitters from Ford, Toyota, Nissan and Subaru. The interior is also roomier, especially the rear seat that adults won’t view as a penalty box. The rest of the cabin has extra soft-touch material covering the dashboard, door panels and floor console. The engine lineup has been reduced to just a single offering for now; a turbocharged 1.4-litre four-cylinder that puts out 153 horsepower and 177 pound-feet of torque. That’s an increase of 15 horsepower and 29 pound-feet from the previous 1.4 turbo. Combined with the lighter structure, the Cruze should prove a peppy small car. Handling the shifting duties is a six-speed manual transmission and optional six-speed automatic. While it’s sad to see the muscular turbo-diesel depart, an all-new version is slated to arrive for the 2017 model year. Meanwhile, the previous non-turbo 1.8-litre four-cylinder base engine won’t be missed. The Cruze comes in four trim levels, starting with the L that includes air conditioning, rearview camera plus a fair assortment of convenience items such as a 19-centimetre touch-screen. At the opposite end the newly designated Premier is prepped with heated front and back leathercovered seats and a full range of infotainment, communications and crash avoidance features. A Premier-based RS package adds a unique grille and nose, fog lamps, chin spoiler, rocker panels, rear spoiler and 18-inch wheels.
2016
TECHNICAL SPECIFICATIONS
The 2016 edition sticks with the same general look as the previous car, including a beltline as high as Steve Urkel’s pants. Inside, a completely modernized interior does away with the annoying tunnelstyle gauge pods that weren’t all that popular when they were installed in the original car nearly a half-century ago. The new dash is clearly more userfriendly, with a 20-centimetre screen displaying vital info between the tach and speedometer, and another optional screen of the same size on the control panel for the navigation, communications and audio systems. The new car has a stiffer chassis and is slightly shorter and narrower than the 2015 model. The weight was also cut by as much as 175 kilograms. That amount relates to the base LT model equipped with a turbocharged 2.0-litre four-cylinder that makes 275 horsepower and 295 pound-feet of torque. Of course the Camaro becomes heavier with the installation of either the 3.6-litre V6 (335 horsepower/284 poundfeet) or the Corvette-based 6.2-litre V8 (455 horsepower/455 pound-feet) that’s exclusive to the SS trim. All three powerplants are available with six-speed manual transmissions, or available eight-speed automatics. However the V8’s manual gearbox gets a rev-matching program that blips the throttle when downshifting. Matching the engine speed to the transmission keeps things nice and smooth at the back end. Regardless of which powertrain you select, you’ll still have a quick car on your hands; the slowest being the base turbo with the automatic that Chevrolet claims can get to 100 km/h from rest in 5.5 seconds (the quickest Camaro SS does it in 4.0). There’s no word yet whether or when the higher performing ZL1 or Z/28 models will show up, but given the racy Mustang GT350’s 2016 return with 526 horsepower, it shouldn’t be too long. The convertible version will join the coupe part way into the 2016 model year.
Drivetrain: A new turbocharged four-cylinder engine is rated at 153 horsepower; former non-turbo base and optional turbo-diesel four-cylinders are gone; six-speed manual and automatic transmissions carry over.
TECHNICAL SPECIFICATIONS Base price (incl. destination): $31,100 (2015) Type: Four-door sub-compact tall wagon Engine (hp): 1.4-litre DOHC I4, turbocharged (138; 153, Sport Touring) Layout: Front-engine, front- /all-wheel-drive Transmission: Six-speed automatic L/100 km (city/highway): 6.5/7.5 (FWD) Weight (kg): 1,470
Drivetrain: Updated version of Buick’s turbocharged 1.4-litre fourcylinder now delivers 153 horsepower in the Sport Touring; 138-horsepower version carries over in the rest; six-speed automatic transmissions for all: front- or optional all-wheel-drive. The practical Buick Encore body gets a winged rear spoiler, uniquely finished 18-inch wheels and body-colour door handles. From its oval-shaped “waterfall” grille to the tip of its two-tone bumper, the Encore features a neat blend of stylish design cues with just a hint of ruggedness. It actually uses the same platform as Buick’s Verano sedan and Chevrolet’s Cruze and Sonic small cars, however it’s about 17 centimetres longer and 13 centimetres taller than the Sonic hatchback, which gives it far more cargo room with the rear seat in place or folded flat. The front passenger seat folds flat so that stuff like ladders and building materials can be more easily accommodated. The cabin is also on the receiving end of one of Buick’s more fashionable interiors. It has active noise cancellation that uses ceilingmounted microphones to detect engine sounds, then a special computer dishes out counteracting sound waves through the audio system. Standard is a 1.4-litre turbocharged four-cylinder engine that generates 138 horsepower and 148 poundfeet of torque, while the Sport Touring uses direct injection and other tweaks to bring those up to 153 horses and 177 pound-feet. Both engines use the same six-speed automatic transmission and available all-wheel-drive system. Base cars arrive with the usual air/cruise/tilt/power accessories plus 10 airbags and 18-inch wheels. From that point, depending on the designation, you select dual-zone climate control, power sunroof, navigation system, leather-trimmed interior, power-adjustable driver’s chair, heated steering wheel, premium Bose sound system, to name just a few. There is also standard OnStar-based 4G LTE mobile Wi-Fi hot spot, which means all your wireless devices have Internet connectivity while on the go.

Today’s new vehicles boast more amenities than ever before, making for a more comfortable and enjoyable driving experience. Today’s automobiles come with more gadgets than ever before. New car buyers can now choose from a host of amenities geared toward making roads easier to navigate and long trips more comfortable. Whereas nonessential amenities once cost buyers a substantial amount of money, nowadays many auto manufacturers include options once considered luxuries in their standard packages, meaning more drivers have the chance to enjoy their new vehicles in style. While not all amenities are free, and some may still cost drivers a considerable amount of money, the following are a handful of features drivers may find too irresistible to ignore. ✶ Satellite radio: Satellite radio has been around for awhile, but only recently did it begin to become a standard offering in new vehicles. Drivers who buy a new car may find a deal where their initial satellite radio subscription, whether it’s a few months or a full year, is included in the cost of the vehicle, while others may need to foot the fill for their subscriptions from jump street. But many new cars are satellite-compatible, which is good news to drivers who want to expand their musical horizons beyond the offerings of their local terrestrial stations. ✶ Television: The vehicles of today often mimic mobile entertainment systems, and no such system is complete without television. Built-in televisions are nothing new, and many a parent has expressed gratitude that in-car televisions
and DVD players can serve as mobile babysitters when taking the kids on long road trips. But some auto manufacturers have begun to offer broadcast television in their vehicles, which is made possible by a built-in television antenna that is capable of picking up nearby channels. ✶ Massaging seats: Heated seats have a reputation of being a luxury well worth the extra investment when buying a new car. But motorists with some extra cash to spend may want to consider massaging seats. Such seats are typically limited to the backseats, but they work in similar fashion to massaging armchairs. Passengers or even drivers taking a break on a long road tip can jump into the back of their cars, recline the backseat and then enjoy a massage to iron out all those aches and pains that developed over the last several hours traversing the highways. ✶ Adaptive lights: If you’re the type of driver who prefers his or her amenities be more about function than luxury, then adaptive lights might be the perfect feature for you. Adaptive lights may swivel as an automobile turns a corner, making it easier for drivers to see. Some adaptive headlights also can sense darkness, protecting drivers who may be distracted by the amenities inside their vehicles and forget to turn their lights on the moment twilight arrives or the sun sets. Today’s automobiles are a testament to innovation, and drivers may find that certain amenities make driving more enjoyable than ever before.
Is it time to replace your winter tires? Many drivers put themselves at risk by using worn car tires during the winter months. To avoid skids, flats and crashes on snowy roads, you should learn how to detect signs of tire wear. All winter tires come with tread-wear indicators. Those are the small bands of rubber between the tread blocks of a tire that become increasingly visible as the tire wears. For a tire to be safe and provide optimal mobility, the tread depth should never fall below four mm. A depth gauge, a small tool sold for a few dollars at hardware stores, can be used to get an accurate measurement. If the result is at the minimum acceptable measurement, you should consider changing your tires, as they’ll inevitably continue to wear during the coming weeks and months. Your tires may also have potentially dangerous cracks over their entire surface. These are caused by dryness from exposure to the sun or by the presence of foreign objects (metal, rocks, broken glass). Cracks should always be taken seriously. Have your winter tires installed by a professional in order to avoid premature
wear. A specialist will ensure that your tires are inflated to the manufacturer’s recommendations and that they are balanced and rotated. A good set of climate-suitable tires will take you a long way in safety.
Make sure your tires are in good condition before you do any winter driving.

Warning signs a tire is about to go flat Few drivers will be fortunate enough to go their entire driving lives without encountering at least one flat tire. Flat tires range from the inconvenient flats, which may interrupt a road trip or make drivers late for work or an appointment, to more dangerous blowouts, which can compromise the safety of drivers, their passengers and anyone else on the road when the tire gives out. But as inconvenient or dangerous as flats or blowouts can be, they also can be prevented more often than not. Tires often produce warning signs that a flat or blowout is about to emerge, so drivers who want to avoid such unfortunate developments can inspect their tires for the following signs.
• Varying wear:
Tires should exhibit the same type of wear. The wear on front tires and back tires may differ, but one front tire should have the same amount of wear as the other and the same goes for the back tires. Uneven tread on tires indicates that the tire with more wear could be about to go out.
• Worn tread:
Even drivers who know little about cars can typically recognize when tire tread has worn down to the point where the tire is a safety risk. But drivers who are unsure can employ the quarter test. Insert a quarter into the tread of the tire, with George Washington’s head upright. If you can see the hairline of the United States’ first president, then you need to replace the tire. Perform this test on each of your vehicle’s four tires.
• Low pressure:
Drivers who do not routinely check their tire pressure are more likely to endure a flat or blowout than those who regularly make sure their tires are at the manufacturer-recommended pressure, which can be found in a vehicle owner’s manual or by calling the tire manufacturer or visiting their website. An underinflated tire is under stress that can cause the tire to blowout. In addition, poorly inflated tires force engines to work harder, which negatively affects a car’s fuel efficiency.

Sometimes tires exhibit physical damage like bulges or cuts, and such signs could mean a flat tire or blowout is just around the corner. Tires that exhibit such physical damage need to be replaced immediately. Flat tires and blowouts can prove both scary and inconvenient. Drivers who want to avoid such problems should routinely inspect their tires for indicators that a flat or blowout is likely to occur.
Routinely checking tire pressure and inflating underinflated tires is one way drivers can reduce their risk of flat tires and blowouts.
Four fluids to check before winter Winter is practically on our doorstep, so it’s time to prepare your car for the rigours of freezing temperatures. The first step is to make sure your vehicle’s fluids are topped off and are of winter-grade quality. Listed below are the four major automotive fluids you should have checked by a service professional this fall.
2. Brake oil

too thick can cause problems, especially when starting the engine. If necessary, have it replaced in order to reduce the risk of problems occurring and to prevent wear on mechanical components.
4. Antifreeze
It’s essential that you have your antifreeze checked before winter arrives. If levels are low, your vehicle’s cooling system could freeze up completely during spells of extreme cold.
Experts recommend having your engine oil changed at the same time that you have your winter tires put on. During the winter, brakes are put to the test on a regular basis. Check the level of your brake fluid in the fall, before you start driving on icy roads. If it’s below the recommended amount, it’s probably because the brake pads are worn. However, if it’s very low, it could be a sign of a leak in the braking system.
3. Transmission oil
In freezing temperatures, old transmission oil tends to lose its fluidity. Transmission oil that’s
Why a clean air filter is important in your vehicle Air filters need to be changed regularly to maintain the right flow of air into the engine and to protect the engine from debris.
Motorists routinely check their tires for proper inflation, top off engine fluid levels and maintain oil change schedules. But some drivers do not understand the importance of keeping engine air filters clean. Engine air filters are a relatively inexpensive vehicle part, but they perform a very important job. For every gallon of gas a car burns, it uses the equivalent of 12,000 gallons of air, and that air must be filtered to help keep an engine clean. Air filters catch all of the dust, grime, insects, sap, leaves, and any other debris that may get sucked up past the air intake of the vehicle’s grill and into the engine itself. Without the air filter, those contaminants may compromise the engine, causing corrosion and abrasion. If the air filter in the engine becomes too dirty and is not changed regularly, the engine is starved of air. Clean air filters allow just the right ratio of air to fuel to enable the engine to function properly. Engines need adequate air for the combustion process
to take place. Without the proper combustion levels, vehicles cannot perform properly or efficiently and the engine may burn more gas or get fewer miles to the gallon. A dirty filter also can rob an engine of power. Drivers may notice sluggish acceleration. Air filters also can get so dirty that the engine stalls completely. But such a problem only develops after considerable neglect. Air filters may not need to be replaced at each and every oil change service call. Many technicians advise replacing the filter every 8,000 miles. However, drivers who live in particularly dry and dusty regions may need to replace filters more frequently. Mechanics can often detect when an air filter needs to be replaced. If he or she notices the air filter is particularly dirty, then it’s probably time to replace it. Replacing the filter is a relatively inexpensive repair for the amount of performance and peace of mind a new filter provides.

Great apps drivers can use
Smartphones are a convenient tool that few people can now imagine living without. Now drivers also can benefit from smartphones thanks to the following apps. ▲ Waze: Commuters who download Waze to their smartphones may wonder how they ever navigated their daily treks to the office without this useful app, which allows drivers to share real-time traffic and road information with their fellow motorists. Drivers can use Waze to save time and gas money and make their commutes less stressful. Drivers who use Waze can actively report accidents and find the least expensive gas prices posted by fellow drivers in their community. ▲ GasBuddy: While fuel prices dipped in late 2014 and stayed low into 2015, today’s drivers are still conditioned to find the most affordable gas prices around. The GasBuddy app makes it easy to do just that, as users can share gas prices in their community, which fellow drivers can then peruse to find the most affordable filling stations along their driving routes. Drivers can even enter their city, ZIP code or postal code to find the

TOYOTA TACOMA Many adventure seekers and working folks alike have an inclination for smaller pickups, which is a niche that the Toyota Tacoma has dominated for years. Drivetrains: Both four-cylinder and V6 engines return, the former with a standard automatic transmission; optional 4x4 for those not wanting to be stuck-in-the-muds.
TECHNICAL SPECIFICATIONS Base price (incl. destination): $29,700 Type: Two-/four-door mid-sized pickup Base engine (hp): 2.7-litre DOHC I4 (159) Optional engine (hp): 3.5-litre DOHC V6 (278) Layout: Front-engine, rear- /fourwheel drive Transmissions: Five-speed automatic (2.7); six-speed automatic (4.0) L/100 km (city/hwy): 12.0/10.0 (2.7, MT, 4x2) Weight (kg): 1,780
The 2016 Tacoma redesign displays a bolder hexagonal grille and the fenders show more flare/flair. Without the regularcab Tacoma in the lineup the extended Access Cab and four-door Double Cab are your only choices. The restyled interior environment benefits from a soundabsorbing headliner, a “floor silencer pad,” thicker door seals and multi-layer acoustic windshield. Returning for base-engine duty is a 2.7-litre four-cylinder that makes 159 horsepower and 180 pound-feet of torque. Optional is a new 3.5-litre V6 that produces 278 horsepower and 265 pound-feet of torque, which replaces the 4.0-litre V6 with its 236 horsepower and 266 pound-feet. The four-cylinder Tacoma is paired with a five-speed manual transmission, while the V6 gets a sixspeed unit. An available six-speed automatic is common to both powerplants. Four-wheel-drive can be added, regardless of engine or cab choices, however manual-transmission-equipped Tacomas will automatically come with 4x4. The base SR Access Cab -- the work truck of the bunch -- is understandably thin on comfort/features, but does include air conditioning, a six-inch touch-screen, six-speaker audio system and a windshield mount for your GoPro-brand video camera. The SR5 adds a sliding rear glass panel, cruise control, remote keyless entry and an enhanced audio/communications package while the TRD (Toyota Racing Development) Sport and Off-Road trims put a rough-and-tumble spin on the Tacoma. You’ll get sport-tuned or off-road Bilstein-brand shocks, a MultiTerrain Select system (that regulates the transmission, throttle and brakes for mud, rock or sand conditions), locking rear differential and a crawl control for taking it slow and easy for extreme trail conditions. The Limited lives it up with, literally, a truckload of luxury items ranging from leather-covered seats, navigation system and a power moonroof to chrome trim with 18-inch polished wheels.
It’s the standard in small tall-wagon category and carries into 2016 with few faults and no big changes. Drivetrain: A 2.5-litre fourcylinder engine and six-speed automatic transmission, which falls in line with competitors such as the Ford Escape and Hyundai Tucson.
TECHNICAL SPECIFICATIONS Base price (incl. destination): $26,100 Type: Four-door sport-utility vehicle Engine (hp): 2.5-litre DOHC I4 (176) Layout: Front-engine, front- /all-wheel-drive Transmission: Six-speed automatic L/100 km (city/highway): 10.0/7.6 (FWD) Weight (kg): 1,545
Four years into its fourth generation and Toyota is making sure the compact RAV4 brings more than just perceived reliability to the table. To do this, its design is rather impressive with all sorts of swoops and curves and an angry-looking nose. The RAV4 is similarly sized to the old third-gen model, but Toyota says there is more cargo room. Despite this, there is no option of the third-row seat or the V6 engine that was required when that seat was ordered. In fact, where the competing Ford Escape offers three different four-cylinder engines, the RAV4 only provides the carryover 2.5-litre four-cylinder rated at 179 horsepower. Fuel economy is good -- 10.0 l/100 km in the city and 7.6 on the highway -- largely due to a six-speed automatic transmission with tall overdrive gearing to cut highway revs. The all-wheel-drive option is has Auto, Lock and Sport modes to suit specific traction and driving situations. Lock mode keeps half the power going to the back wheels as long as you’re driving slower than 40 km-h. Sport mode allows wider transfer of torque between the front and rear wheels (as much as half to the rear) than the Auto mode. That’s all well and good, but the real battleground these days is in interior fit and finish as well as technology. The RAV4 is awash with “soft-touch” materials and silver trim bits, which is pretty standard for this class. There are also eight standard airbags and a 16-centimetre screen that doubles as a monitor for the back-up camera, which is also standard. RAV4 is offered in the usual LE, XLE and Limited trim levels. Oddly perhaps, the LE comes with 17-inch steel wheels, which probably helps keep the starting price around 26 grand, but you do get air conditioning and some power features. The XLE adds a moonroof, roof rails and new 17-inch Superchrome wheels, while the Limited comes with 18-inch alloy wheels and opens up the door to a 576-watt JBL-brand audio system.
PROTECT YOUR VEHICLE from snow, ice and damage from the cold Winter can be an unforgiving season. Freezing temperatures coupled with snow and ice can take its toll on people who live in climates where cold weather is a fact of winter life. While winter can test people’s patience, it also can be harsh on cars and trucks. Understanding what components of a vehicle can be compromised by dropping temperatures and snowy roads can help drivers take action to safeguard their automotive investments. While the Canadian Automobile Association notes that winter can wreak havoc on just about every part of a vehicle, there are some parts that seem to bear the brunt of Old Man Winter’s abuse. Properly servicing and caring for a car or truck can help. Drivers should take their vehicles for a tuneup and inspection before wintry weather arrives. A mechanic will examine the car battery and check antifreeze levels and make sure that the thermostat, defroster, brakes, and even wiper blades are working effectively. Have the tires inspected for adequate tread, which can make navigating roads safer. If the treads are worn, replace the tires. In addition to visiting their mechanics, drivers can perform some inspections and fixes themselves. ➠ Check that all of the vehicle’s lights are operational so your car can be easily seen during inclement weather. Exchange your existing windshield washer
fluid with one that will not freeze in cold conditions. Check the nozzles on the windshield-washer system routinely and clear out any blockages of ice or debris. While addressing windshield washer fluid, also replace worn out windshield wiper blades with ones that can withstand snow and icy weather. ➠ A new coating of wax can serve as a shield against road salt, snow, sleet, and rain. Try a polymer wax to protect the paint. Whenever possible, rinse off salt and grime so it does not dry on the car and gradually wear away at the paint. Some drivers mistakenly believe that salt stops being a problem once it dries simply because moisture is the active ingredient for a corrosive reaction. But humidity in the air is enough to keep the salt eating away at the car’s paint, and that can contribute to rust. Be sure to rinse off the undercarriage of the vehicle as well. ➠ Have your tires’ alignment checked toward the end of winter or early spring. A season of traveling over pothole-ridden roads or hitting curbs buried under snow drifts can affect the alignment. Get everything back on track. Similarly, inspect tires routinely, as weather changes can affect tire pressure and strength. ➠ Use a soft snow brush or a foam brush to clear snow off of the car. Avoid hard plastic scrapers you might use on your windshield, as they can scratch painted surfaces.
➠ Try to park the vehicle in a garage or under a car port, each of which can protect cars and trucks from the often harsh elements of winter. Vehicles can be affected by the cold weather. Keep them running efficiently to prevent damage this winter.
Scrapers should only be used on windows and not on the body of the car.

Five common mistakes made by car owners during the winter 1. Waiting until the first snowfall to think about having your winter tires put on is definitely not a good idea. Not only do you risk having an accident while driving without the proper tires, but it’ll also be hard to get a timely appointment at the garage. 2. Desperately trying to start a frozen engine by turning the key for too long can cause engine damage.
Any single attempt to turn over your engine should not exceed 20 seconds. If it doesn’t start, wait two minutes before trying again. 3. Installing only two winter tires out of four is a risky way to try and save money — not to mention that it’s illegal in certain provinces. You may not be aware of just how dangerous this can be. In winter driving, the difference in traction between winter and summer tires can cause a drastic skid and an accident. 4. Keeping a spare container of windshield

washer fluid in your vehicle is always a good idea. On a highway, when your windshield is being continually sprayed with wet, dirty snow from other vehicles, run ning out of washer fluid greatly reduces your visibility and your safety. 5. When their car lock is frozen, many people be come impatient and use too much force when turning the key, which can end up breaking. To avoid this dou bly frustrating situation, get yourself an alcohol-based de-icer and keep it in your purse or backpack.
