Watch them fly; ski racing at KAR Night Slalom Saturday, Super G, Downhill next week C AROLYN GR ANT Bulletin Editor
There is an elite group of skiers doing practice runs down the Dreadnaught at Kimberley Alpine Resort this week, in preparation for the Fidelity Cup Downhills and Super G’s, an event for U18 FIS athletes which begins on Saturday, January 30 with a night slalom. This is the fourth year for the event, which is put together by Dreadnaught Ski Racing, an umbrella group encompassing the Kimberley Disabled Skier’s Association, Kimberley Alpine Team and Kimberley Alpine Resort. They all chip in to produce a first class event, says Chief of Race, Lloyd Steeves. “The event week started with the Speed
Camp with 40 to 50 athletes spending three days (January 27 to 29) learning the dynamics involved in skiing speed events, like how to control air, gliding on the flats, absorbing compressions, and getting a great start and finish,” Steeves said. “Kimberley’s Dreadnaught Downhill race track provides the perfect developmental speed environment that allows athletes to learn in a safe environment while still being challenged with the features which can be found on most downhill tracks. To develop great downhill and super G skiers, events like this one in Kimberley are important confidence builders.” Both the Slalom and the Downhills and Super G events are attracting athletes from clubs all over BC and Alberta as well as some international participants from Chile, Eritrea, Finland, DEREK TRUSSLER PHOTO GBR, Japan, Macedonia and Switzerland, he says. The Night Slalom, popular with both skiers and spectators, goes Saturday on the Main at Kimberley Alpine Resort. It starts at 4 See RACE, page 4 p.m. and should wrap up by 8:30.
OCP update process goes on Still opportunity to have your say C AROLYN GR ANT Bulletin Editor
Last week’s Official Community Plan sessions held at the Green Door, the Timber Hitch and Kimberley Alpine Resort gathered some good discussion and input, but they are certainly not the only
chance Kimberley residents will have to put their two cents in. “I encourage people to get online and fill out the OCP survey,” said Councillor Kent Goodwin. “With all those events crammed into four days, people were just hearing about it when it ended.” The survey is available at kimberley.ca, just follow the links. Fill it out and you could win a one month Aquatic Centre pass.
Mayor Don McCormick says that it has been a great process so far, but the City needs to do a little education on exactly what kind of feedback they are looking for. “The OCP is not a rule book, its a road map,” he said. The City will consult with stakeholders and community organizations as they go through the process of updating the OCP.
Snow removal crews doing great job, Mayor says C AROLYN GR ANT Bulletin Editor
It’s a big snow year and the phones are ringing at city hall with the usual complaints. However, Mayor Don McCormick says that snow removal crews are doing a great job. “There’s a lot going on in town and they can’t be everywhere at once,” he
