Central Saanich councillors have asked municipal staff to look into a traffic agreement with the operators of a business on a property on the neighbouring Tsartlip First Nation.

Last week’s District council meeting heard a lengthy discussion on the continued use of Hovey Road by large commercial trucks. The road is narrow, rural and has homes on one side and the First Nation on the other. A stakeholder meeting is set for this Friday, Feb. 26 with representatives from the Central Saanich neighbourhood, members of the Tsartlip First Nation, V.I. Pallet and Recovery Logistics Inc. and District staff to discuss the issue further.

The main issue has been safety on Hovey and Tomlinson roads as large trucks travel back and forth from V.I. Pallet.

“There is no question this [is] a frustrating issue,” said Central Saanich Mayor Ryan Windsor.

The District is considering an extraordinary traffic agreement wth the operator (V.I. Pallet).

Council has asked staff to see if there could be limitations placed on road use. What that would look like is unknown, Windsor said, adding there could be any number of conditions in such an agreement.

The District will also ask the Central Saanich Police Service if there are any eminent safety concerns.

While many residents voiced their concerns over the use of the road by large tractor-trailer trucks, they also voiced their concern on the company itself, claiming it was operating without a business license.

One individual by the name of John Cooper Jr. said he doesn’t want the company there at all.

“I want it cleaned up and I want it out of there,” he said at last week’s meeting.

Windsor told the PNR that from the District’s perspective, it’s simply a transportation issue.

Kevin Grey, owner of V.I. Pallet Recovery and Logistics Inc., said when it comes to the trucks, all are driven by professionals. He suggested the trucks are five per cent of the vehicle traffic on the road.

When asked about operating without a business license, Grey said he doesn’t require one on the current property which is located on Tsartlip land. He stated he asked the municipality and was told he would need an inter-municipal license and so made the application. That license, he said, has been on hold until the issue is resolved.

“I’m operating under the legal conditions of the property that I am leasing,” he told the PNR. reporter@peninsulanewsreview.com

own Crier, former municipal councillor, wedding practitioner and general man-about-town Kenny Podmore’s volunteering dates back to when he first came to Canada.

His first visit was in 1997 when he came to Sidney for the World Town Crying Championship. Podmore was a town crier where he was from in England at that time and had never been to Canada before.

“I came and I just fell in love with Sidney and I decided I wanted to come back and decided I wanted to settle here…”

In late 1998, he began to settle here and got his landed immigrant status

in 2001. Prior to that he began volunteering with what was then Peninsula Community Services, now known as Beacon Community Services, starting out as a volunteer driver and peer counsellor.

Podmore currently does a lot of fundraising and is always there if something comes up. He’s the co-ordinator for the community barbecue held for the Sidney Canada Day celebrations and is also involved with a project in South Africa, helping to fundraise for children orphaned by AIDS. He has also been involved in many town crier events — acting as an ambassador for Sidney.

Podmore currently works at the Sidney Pier Hotel and has done so since the hotel opened.

“So life is good. I took the philosophy that Canada was very good to

accept me so my volunteering is really a thank you,” he said, adding he likes to give back and loves people.

Podmore had volunteered as well in England and after coming to Canada, branched out. He has helped run or contribute to other fundraising efforts for people around the country — including for the people of Lac Megantic, Quebec, following a disastrous train explosion.

“It’s just ongoing. I have to say it’s all self-inflicted but I just love doing it.”

“I don’t golf, I don’t fish — I volunteer,” he added He said being a nominee for a Hearts of the Community award feels very special.

“All I do I couldn’t do without the people out there because I come up with the ideas and people support me.”

2016 Hearts of the Community Awards The annual Hearts of the Community Awards are handed out each year by Beacon Community Services, proudly supported by the Peninsula News Review.

The PNR and BCS combine efforts each year to recognize the youth, adults and service organizations that contribute a breadth of volunteer hours to the Saanich Peninsula.

Nominations from the community are taken throughout January and most of February and a panel of judges selects the six recipients of the Hearts awards each year.

The awards were given out yesterday (Tues., Feb. 23) at the Mary Winspear Centre. Pick up Friday’s PNR for profiles of the other 2016 honorees.

Jones currently does judging or works with other members of the local 4H club. She was the president of the Saanich Lamb Club, a position that just ended at the start of the new year.

That work saw her volunteering at most of the club events, working with the kids.

Jones also volunteers with the Queer Straight Alliance at Stelly’s Secondary School, a group designed to help make the school a safer place for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) youth. They take part in projects like a day of silence against bullying, suicide awareness projects and give presentations to Planning 10 classes, psychology classes and social justice classes to educate them on gay rights.

“It’s something that I just ended up doing and then I realized that I really enjoy doing it and the things that I volunteer for are things that I really truly care about,” she said.

Those things she truly cares about include volunteering

at her school to raise awareness for mental health issues — which are faced often by LGBT students.

She said she also really cares about working in the 4H club with the kids.

“I remember being a young kid just joining 4H and how much I wanted to have an older member really help us along and help us have a great experience in 4H,” she explained, “and so it’s really important to me to give that experience to the younger members, because I’ve been there before.”

Jones said it was pretty exciting to be a nominee this year for the Hearts of the Community Awards.

“It’s really nice that somebody has nominated me and noticed that I’ve been doing this volunteer work. It’s nice to be appreciated for doing that work.”

Following high school, Jones said she plans on attending the University of Kings College’s foundation year program and will continue with her volunteer work no matter where she lands.

Steelhead LNG pressing on with Saanich Inlet plans Carlie Connolly News staff

Liquified natural gas, or LNG, facilities are not new to the province — or even Vancouver Island, says Alex Brigden.

Brigden is the project director for the proposed Malahat LNG facility being floated

by Steelhead LNG, the company working with the Malahat First Nation on the plan.

Brigden and Steelhead LNG CEO Nigel Kuzemko presented information about the project to a small crowd at the Quality Inn Waddling Dog in Central Saanich Feb. 17, hosted by the Saanich Peninsula Chamber of Commerce.

“Let’s understand that LNG and LNG production is not new to B.C and the reason we are proposing an LNG plant to be able to get the product to the far east is because you can’t put a pipeline all the way across the pacific.”

He added an LNG plant liquifies the product, enabling it to be transported via ship to markets in places such as northern Asia.

So why the Bamberton site?

One of the key reasons is access to deepwater port facilities.

Saanich Inlet is very steep sided, he said, meaning that would require building jetties to accommodate LNG transport vessels.

The jetties proposed, he said, are very short with no dredging of the

inlet required. An existing landing area at the site, he continued, is ideal for LNG shipping.

Brigden said the site is very close to international shipping lanes, where there are around 10,000 vessels moving through the Juan de Fuca Strait between Vancouver, the U.S. and other international ports.

The Bamberton site itself, he added, has been industrialized for about 100 years.

“So we’re not taking a green field site and [proposing] an LNG plant like some of the proponents are up north.”

Steelhead LNG is currently only starting their engineering studies and are calling this the concept phase.

They have looked at several different layouts, all of which are floating facilities.

During the discussion, the public had the opportunity to ask questions. When asked about accoident potential, Brigden replied there has never been an incident leading to loss of containment in the cargo tanks of an LNG carrier.

“Firstly, LNG carriers have a lot of passive protection inherent in the design. The key feature here is a double hull ...” said Brigden.

Brigden said the company has not yet completed ongoing heritage or socio-economic studies. They are also engaging with First Nations to understand title and treaty rights.

Mark Loria of the Centre for the Salish Sea had a few concerns with the project.

“You’re really looking at the entire Salish Sea here, there’s 20 First Nations (in the region),” Loria stated.

“It seems a bit surprising to me that you mentioned one nation where you’re located but you’re actually going through the Salish Sea.” Loria added that his concerns are with a proposed underwater pipeline and the potential for leaks. His other concern was of big ship movements.

“It seems really surprising to me that you would come into the

Saanich Inlet with such a big boat, with such floating devices in such a small area.”

Sylvia Olsen, a member of the Tsartlip First Nation, said her concern was with consultation, stating she hasn’t heard about what’s going to be good for First Nations in this project.

Kuzemko said the company will have to consult with many more people for a better understanding.

On Oct. 2, 2015 Steelhead LNG announced National Energy Board approval for a license to export up to 30 million tonnes of liquified natural gas per year over a 25-year period from two proposed sites.

Steelhead had previously announced proposals to build export facilities on each Vancouver Island coast: a $30 billion facility at Sarita Bay, about 75 kilometres southwest

of Port Alberni, and a smaller floating terminal at the Bamberton site just south of the Mill Bay ferry terminal.

The Sarita Bay proposal is being explored with the Huu-ay-aht First Nation, while the Mill Bay project is proceeding in conjunction with the Malahat First Nation.

The latter band received a jolt earlier this month with the announcement three top economic development officials had been dismissed as part of an ongoing review of governance and finances initiated by new Chief Caroline Harry and her

council shortly after they were elected in November.

Previous chief Michael Harry resigned last summer amidst allegations he was receiving a consulting fee from the owners of a controversial contaminated soil treatment facility near Shawnigan Lake.

Kuzemko said Steelhead is continuing to work with the new chief and council to iron out any concerns they may have.

“Every organization goes through this, particularly after a political change,” he said. “The deal that we signed is

still in place.”

The Mill Bay plant has come under fire from some neighbours around Saanich Inlet, who say it comes with too much environmental risk. The Cowichan Valley Regional District last week formalized its opposition due to those environmental concerns.

“We should make it clear that the Cowichan Valley, or anywhere else in B.C. for that matter, is not the place for this kind of project,” Shawinigan Lake Director Sonia Furstenau said.

It’s our job to be seen

T

he death of a pedestrian on Mt. Newton Cross Road on Friday, Feb. 12 will forever be in the thoughts of residents.

The news of the collision and the woman’s death has continued to circulate around the community. Bouquets of flowers line a roadside post near the scene of the incident, in respect to the victim.

Central Saanich resident Megan Turpin Ereiser even started a petition — garnering hundreds of signatures from those in the community — in hopes of creating a safer, brighter place to walk.

To improve For drivers, it’s pedestrian safety about slowing down along Mt. Newton Cross Road, she and staying alert is asking for sidewalks and lighting from the municipality and is currently looking for donations of reflector vests for pedestrians who use the route.

It is this type of action we as a community should be taking — creating a better and safer place to live and doing everything we can to protect ourselves and one another. It’s our job to be safe.

Our job as pedestrians is to be seen at night, to wear reflective vests or clothing so we can be seen by cars. It’s our job to be alert and stay off the road as much as we can, taking sidewalks or trails. We must protect ourselves from danger.

We can come together to protect one another by helping to make our roads are safe and try to prevent such accidents from happening again.

For drivers, it’s about slowing down and staying alert when traveling along those roads with only a narrow walkway and little to no lighting.

As people drive by the accident scene, they must remember life is short and it could have very well been one of us or one of our loved ones who were hit.

We need, as a community and as individuals, to make out streets safer each day by doing our part to be seen and taking a step forward to voice our concerns to the community leaders responsible for making those much-needed improvements.

he Feb. 9 public hearing on the Fourth Street development drew way more people than have been seen at public hearings in many years. I usually think it’s a good thing when residents turn out to express their views, but I was troubled by what happened.

The decision we had to make was whether to approve an additional four units as bonus density. However, almost everybody spoke about it being a four-storey building. This makes it challenging for council, because (1) most people didn’t seem to understand that the land was already zoned to allow four-storeys, (2) most people didn’t say anything about what they thought about a density of 11 units vs. seven units, and (3) several people were misinformed about various matters such as thinking it was contrary to the OCP. Only a handful actually spoke about the bonus density (all in opposition).

Obviously the majority that night were opposed to the development. But would they have been any happier if the development went ahead with seven units instead of 11? It was pretty clear that some would have been happier. They

I can understand how rumours like this might appeal because some people are unhappy and willing to believe the worst. However, this isn’t fair and it needs to stop. If you have any actual evidence to support such allegations — great, bring it forward. I assure you that appropriate action will be taken. But, if you don’t have any evidence, then what in the world gives you the right to repeat allegations like

Readers respond: PNR readers weigh in on the proposed four-story building on Fourth Street in Sidney Density is a tool Re: Hundreds pack meeting, PNR Feb. 12.

Don’t be fooled, folks. Passing the bonus density amendment for the Fourth Street condo plan was not about saving Sidney from death, as Mayor Steve Price wants you to believe.

Nor was it because “the numbers simply don’t work” otherwise, as the developer, Mr. Verbrugge claims in the article. It is about efforts to maximize the density allowed in

any proposed development without carefully considering its social impact or other alternatives.

Prior to writing to the Town in support of a three-storey development on the same property, we met with a developer who laid out a plan demonstrating the profitability of a three-storey, mixeduse building, which included affordable units on the same property. The plan did not require million dollar condos and, most importantly, it better fit

the neighbourhood.

This controversy is about using bonus density as a tool to blindly achieve one policy goal, creating maximum density for a given project, while disregarding neighbourhood wellbeing, the “overarching goals” of the Strategic Plan of Sidney and even the planning principles to guide such decisions (see OCP 5.3.3).

According to the West Coast Environmental Law group, bonus density works to give the developer an

increase in density not normally allowed while providing the municipality with an amenity to further public policy goals.

Comments from the Mayor and Mr. Verbrugge in the article do not address the merits of this project with respect to its furthering any public policy other than to attempt to justify maximizing allowable density. With a little more imagination and thought, the bonus density tool can be used to increase density in cases which

merit it, while protecting neighbourhoods and achieving other critical community goals. Aren’t those the outcomes we should expect from the decisions of our public officials?

Vitality ahead I attended the public hearing with Town council Feb. 9. I had no plans to speak, but ended up voicing my support of the project on Fourth Street

because I had not heard a good reason for the project to be stopped.

I had read every bit of information on the Town website and I had walked to the Fourth and Oakville area before attending. Going from seven condos in a four-storey building to 11 seemed to make sense to me and apparently to Town staff and Council and to many of the silent majority that don’t write letters or come to meetings.

There will be projects that should not be developed for one reason or another, but there should be good, specific, objective reasons. I am very impressed by the work done by the Town staff and by the Advisory Planning Commission.

Their work appears to be objective, well researched and compliant with established laws, bylaws, rules and long term objectives.

I believe the vast majority of Sidney residents want the Town to flourish. What that looks like is of course subjective.

I for one would like to see the density increase downtown via attractive new buildings from three to six stories per the OCP, built over time that add a few hundred people per year.

I believe such growth will help establish and maintain the vitality of our town for the benefit of valuable visitors, our essential local businesses and our dedicated residents.

Readers respond: NAVCAN appeal; Gateway Land values do vary I am the person who formulated and ran the appeal for BC Ferries when I was employed

by Altus Group in Vancouver. As such, I have intimate knowledge of the BC Ferries appeal which was run against Horseshoe Bay Ferry Terminal first, after which appeals were to be run against Swartz Bay, Departure Bay and Tsawwassen.

My review of your editorial “Tower ruling has got legs,” PNR Feb. 19 is interesting as it does not relate the facts of BC Ferries as opposed to the NAV Canada appeals. The two appeals do not have the same facts.

I was not involved with the NAVCAN appeal but followed it closely.

The comments in the editorial are simplistic in that it is possible for land and improvements to have a negative value, or minimal value — this is technical and I will not go into it here.

You are correct that the Court found the cost to valuation should be used. However, this in its self will not get the assessment back to $1.4 million as there will be legitimate argument on depreciation under the cost method that may well result in the assessed value still being $10 for the improvements.

There will also be good arguments to substantiate that the land is also $10.

The NAVCAN Court decision was a victory for North Saanich, but this could be short lived, and most importantly, does not automatically mean that BC Assessment could be successful in overturning the PAAB decision on Horseshoe Bay Ferry Terminal, which would also impact Swartz Bay Ferry Terminal.

There is argument that both NAVCAN and BC Ferry terminals are part of the Federal/Provincial transportation system. That being the case, BC Ferry terminals are simply part of the property tax free highway system.

The comment on farms, interesting, but farm land/ALR land already has significantly reduced assessed values and

property tax. So who is getting the deal now?

Certainly not residential.

Finally, NAVCAN and BC Ferry terminal land cannot be sold, the improvements cannot be used by anyone else — as such where is the market? When comparing ALR land, this land can be sold to anyone and the market will determine the value — there may be restrictions on use, but the land never the less, as stated, can be sold to anyone.

Take Gateway to referendum Don Enright’s letter (PNR, Feb. 10,) clearly states the alarming facts that surround the proposed Sidney Gateway retail development at the corner of Beacon Avenue and the Pat Bay Highway — a development that will change the nature of the small town of Sidney forever.

I am concerned that, despite any protest voiced before this council, this project will go ahead, accompanied by the common device of inviting public comment as a matter of record, thus demonstrating the “open” nature of the process, but with little intent to react to the opinions expressed.

The people of Sidney should not be deflected by another pointless gathering where they will be allowed to ventilate to no purpose, as was demonstrated in the recent meeting on the issue of a zoning change for a condominium development.

As was reported in the PNR, a crowd gathered before council, with the majority opposed to the development.

Yet council proceeded to vote in favour of the development.

The Gateway Project will have a direct impact on the residents of Sidney and North Saanich. I have yet to meet anybody who thinks that it is a good idea. Thus far, it would seem that the developers, and some enthusiasts on Sidney town council, are pushing ahead with their plans, while paying lipservice to the importance of listening to the

posed change to the format of our communities. I believe this will clearly show that there is massive opposition to this proposal. If I am wrong, and the support is there, then the community will at least have been consulted in an honest and open way.

The citizens of Sidney should demand this accommodation by their council and should demand it now.

he birthing process got a lot more creative with the idea of birth photography. Capturing those special moments of a new born entering the world is what professional photographer Shea Long loves most about her job. Long specializes in birth and story telling photography, meaning she tells the whole story for couples before the baby is even born.

“So I’m kind of a fly on the wall in the background and I want to tell the story how it is. I don’t want people posing and fake smiles, I want to get them in their honest, raw state and how they’re feeling at that time,” she told the PNR. Born in Saskatoon, Long began her adventure into the world of birth photography last July. After working in veterinary medicine for 17 years, she determined that work was stressful for her and often times there just wasn’t the happy results she had wanted.

Her birth photography can begin with a family-to-be well before delivery. photography, and decided that would be her next path.

“When I had a day off or when I wanted to chill out, I would take my camera out for a walk and just take pictures and so I decided that I needed a career change and I needed to start doing something that I really loved and photography was it.”

Later moving to Vancouver to take a one-year program at a media college, Long met professional birth photographer Morag Hastings and the rest was history.

When Long graduated from school, she moved to Vancouver Island and has since photographed seven births.

“I can’t have children so this is why it’s extra special for me.”

Couples can hire Long for sessions from when they are getting ready to have a child.

Long said one couple asked her to take photos of them getting the nursery ready, preparing for the baby while still pregnant and even taking photos at home of the pair with their pets.

Long said she enjoys telling the whole story and is on call from around week 38 of a pregnency, to the time of delivery to capture all of the emotions of birth.

St. Elizabeth’s Church got a huge makeover this past week with a colourful glass display, more than 20 feet tall, representing the journey of life.

Designers Tom Mercer and Ed Schaefer of Mercer and Shaefer Glasstudios were given the suggested theme representing a Christian’s relationship with God as he or she grows and matures throughout their lifetime.

Work began at the end of October, 2015 on the contemporary stained glass window. It was completed just last week.

One of the church’s committee members, Lucy Clark, said the congregation wanted to aesthetically enhance the church and make it more beautiful.

She said with it representing the journey of life, as you get closer to it, you can see footsteps going up the display.

The footprints, which begin from the bottom as an infant’s, go up to the top, ending as an elderly person’s tracks. It’s suggestive of a journey and the time humans have to expe-

Clark added the display can also mean many things, such as human DNA. “This is all for you to see every time something different,” she told the PNR. The design elements described by Mercer are as follows: “The main design element, the path with it’s twists and turns, was inspired by the DNA molecule, suggesting not only Man’s journey as a species, but our shared ances-

try with all life on earth. It spirals around the central clear cross formed by the arms of the upper windows.

It’s colours and forms suggest life’s struggles and triumphs; birth, growth, and death, from and back into the Mystery. The cross refers to Christ, while the colour purple to God the Father, both always with us on our journey. The golden path represents Life, and separation from sins, while the red implies passion and the sins

we inevitably commit. The image of the earth reminds us both of our place here on our lovely and peaceful island and of our shared responsibilities to others less fortunate than us. The sundial and phases of the moon remind us again of the passage of time, while the galaxy suggests a wider view of our place in the universe, and the Mystery of God’s Creation.”

Traditional leaded glass, hand-blown and imported from Germany, was used for the window, Mercer said.

“Someone over there takes a blob of molten glass and blows a big, long three-foot bubble. They’ll flatten it and open it up in a kiln and there’s a sheet of glass,” he said.

As for the bright colours on each piece of glass, Mercer referred to it as “flashed antique,” meaning most of the glass is clear with the blobs of molten glass dipped in a specific colour.

People can view the completed glass display at St. Elizabeth’s Catholic Church at 10030 3rd St. in Sidney.

She even photographs the day after the event to show the excitement of going home.

Long said birth photography is becoming a real trend, with nobody having even heard of it until five years ago.

Now having gained so much popularity, there are organizations getting out there and being known, supplying information on birth photography — where people can find it, what it entails and so on.

Long recently entered three photos in an international competition put on by the International Association of Professional Birth Photographers (of which she is a member).

One of her images was chosen out of a little more than 300 entries, to be featured in a bunch of international publications.

Ray Rogers of North Saanich nominated a large Arbutus tree, which he calls the Cloake Hill Colossus, and it recently placed in the top 10 of largest Arbutus trees in B.C. “I’ve been looking at it for 30 years and thinking, that’s the biggest arbutus I’ve ever seen,” he told the PNR. The tree, a 10 minute walk from Rogers’ home, was determined one of the largest Arbutus trees on not only the Island, but in the province.

The determination was based on three measurements: the height of the tree, its circumference and the crown. All are then totalled in a final score which determines the overall largest Arbutus — that title officially held by an Arbutus on Thetis Island.

Rogers said all of the measurements had to be verified by a registered forester and he happened to know a retired forester by the name of Gordon Joyce, who agreed to help Rogers in measuring the tree.

The result came out to a score of 388, based on the three factors.

The tree’s height and its crown spread placed first among all Arbutus trees in the province. The Colossus placed fifth in the circumference measurement. Overall, it made the top 10 list.

Giant Sequoia trees are some of Nature’s best efforts A

few days ago there was something written about Sequoia trees but, unfortunately, I no longer have the column in front of me.

I wonder how many

of us are aware that there is at least one magnificent specimen still standing beside a road on the Saanich Peninsula.

These are truly one of Nature’s better efforts.

Many years ago my husband and I drove through the trunk of a Sequoia which had been killed and a tunnel cut through the trunk (just to prove it could be done). This was in

Northern California where these beautiful trees used to be a dime a dozen and I hope they are still there. It seems a terrible sin to destroy anything that is one of Nature’s miracles.

What costs LESS than a daily cup of coffee and will CHANGE YOUR LIFE?

This reminded me of another act of uncalledfor destruction that took place here.

Someone who loved beauty had planted a long, wide row of yellow crocus alongside a little-used road in Sidney. They were a joyful sight!

One day, to my horror, someone who must have been sick of life, had driven his or her car over the whole lot of their sunny yellow blooms, leaving a mass of churned-up earth

Residents’ association meeting March 1 NORTH SAANICH — The role of community advocacy groups will be the topic of the night at the North Saanich Residents’ Association meeting on Tuesday, March 1.

NORTH SAANICH — A youthful Peninsula Panthers squad had two goals at the start of the 2015/16 season and have nailed down the first one.

Club management knew the first part of the schedule would pose a huge learning curve but they felt that with the talent on board, second place in the South Division was attainable.

And after a second- half run, the Club did, in fact, capture second place are now involved in a heated playoff battle with the Westshore Wolves.

The Panthers opened the series on Monday night at home as the PNR was going to press.

The two Clubs were back at the Q-Centre in Colwood for the second game of the series and game three will be back home at the Panorama Recreation Centre this Friday — puck drops at 7:30 p.m.

Game four will go Sunday evening in Colwood at 5 p.m. If a fifth game is needed, the venue will be back at Panorama at 7:30 p.m. next Monday night.

On Saturday, Feb. 20, the Panthers held their annual awards banquet. Four of the 11 awards were captured by 20-year-old Captain Spencer Loverock.

When Ron Buschgens began looking around for a business opportunity on Vancouver Island while he was still living in Australia, he had no idea that his future would land him in Sidney.

Or that a former neighbour in Queensland, Australia would be the one to get him here.

Buschgens is the new owner of Lolly Gobble Sweet Shop in downtown Sidney. He purchased the business in September of 2015 and officially took over the candy store on January 1, 2016. Turns out, he knows the previous owner — Ann Roche — quite well.

A native of Calgary, Buschgens moved to Australia in 1994 to work as an institutional designer right out of university. He would meet his future wife, Kaylie there and move to a neighbourhood on Magnetic Island in Queensland.

It was there that he met a neighbour — Roche — who even helped them design a new home. The two families would eventually move away

from each other and it wasn’t until Buschgens, who was now working in the construction industry, began contemplating a move to B.C. and Vancouver Island that they would be reunited.

He said he was looking to buy a business for his wife, figuring he could remain in his field after a move back to Canada. That’s when he discovered Lolly Gobble listed for sale — and lo and behold, it was owned by their former neighbour.

“She also sold us on Sidney,” Buschgens said of Roche. “It’s a wonderful place to live.”

He added Roche has been helpful with the transition, as well as in planning for some updates to the shop later this year. He said he is enjoying a different career, running the shop until his wife can join him (they have a daughter who is finishing school in Australia). Buschgens said he might even stick with the candy shop after all.

“I’ve never had a shop before, but I’ve always thought that it would be fun to have a retail store. It’s a very positive environment here and I enjoy going to work again.”
