Candidates will face electorate at forum

VOL 119 NO. 19

Rally Day! Page 16

DELLA MALLETTE Grand Forks Gazette

Candidates vying for the lone seat available on Grand Forks City Council will face the electorate at an allcandidates forum this Tuesday, May 17. The forum, hosted by the Boundary Country Regional Chamber of Commerce, will be held at the Grand Forks Secondary School auditorium. The doors open at 6:30 p.m., with the forum running from 7 – 9 p.m. Six of the seven candidates are expected to take the stage: Zak Eburne-Stoodley, Ken Johnston, Cathy Korolek, Kyle Piper, Brian Taylor and Bev Tripp. Candidate Patrick O’Doherty will not be attending, sadly due to a death in the family. Advance questions may be submitted for the candidates by emailing info@boundarychamber.com or calling 250-442-7263. The deadline for submissions is Friday (May 13). All candidates have been offered an opportunity to submit an article and photograph to the Gazette, which will be published in the May 18 issue. Because that is also the day for advance voting, those articles will be available online by Wednesday morning at the latest. No subscription will be required to view those articles. As stated, advance voting is available on Wednesday, May 18 from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. at City Hall Council Chambers. General voting day is Saturday, May 28, also from 8 a.m. – 8 p.m. at City Hall Council Chambers. On general voting day, special voting opportunities will be available to patients or staff of Phoenix Manor Retirement Home, Boundary Lodge Assisted Living, Silver Kettle Village and Boundary Hospital/ Hardy View Lodge/Cottages.

Colours light up the street Members of Grand Forks City Council put their best feet forward to cross one of two new rainbow crosswalks by City Hall—and while it certainly doesn’t compare to the iconic photo of the Beatles walking across the sidewalk in front of Abbey Road Studios, it’s just as legendary a sight for Grand Forks. The rainbow has long been considered the symbol of gay pride, and flags and crosswalks bearing brilliant colours are popping up all over the world to ensure the safety, acceptance, inclusion and dignity of the LGBTQ community.

Border Bruins re-sign coach

GRAND FORKS BORDER BRUINS Submitted to the Gazette

The Grand Forks Border Bruin Association is pleased to announce that the team has reached a multi-year agreement with head coach and general manager Emery Olauson. In his first year coaching the Bruins, Olauson led the 2015-2016 team to their first playoff appearance in 19 years. The Bruins had a season record of 23-24-5, finishing third in the five-team Neil Murdoch division. They went on to defeat Castlegar in the first round of playoffs in an exciting six-game series before falling to the Beaver Valley Nitehawks in five. Olauson was selected by his

peers as both the Neil Murdoch division and KIJHL Coach of the Year. Following the election of a new board of directors at the Bruins’ annual general meeting on April 8, President Dan Koftinoff said that resigning the coach was the first priority of the incoming board. “We recognized that there was a risk that other opportunities would present themselves to the coach if we didn’t act quickly. We feel that there’s plenty of room to advance the team, and based on last year’s performance that Emery is the man we wanted to lead the way. “Talks began within days of the AGM, and we’re very happy that the final terms were agreed to over

the weekend. Having a multi-year deal in place gives some stability to the whole organization, and we think that stability will also help immensely with recruiting players for upcoming seasons.” Preparations are already underway for a spring camp in Cochrane, Alta June 3-5. The Grand Forks Border Bruins (www.borderbruins.ca) are a community-owned Junior B hockey club. The team was an inaugural member of the Kootenay International Junior Hockey League, and has played in more KIJHL seasons than any other team, having missed only two seasons since 1969. Contact Dan Koftinoff at 250-442-1201, or dankoftinoff@ telus.net, for further information.
