Two Communities in Bloom judges said they were quite impressed with the tidiness and “the passion for gardening and flowers” in Ponoka as they toured the town on Thursday, July 14 as part of their assessment for how many blooms the town will be awarded in this year’s quality of life rankings by the non-profit organization.

Judges Sherry Cote and Mohyuddin Mirza were given a guided tour of the town which included several visits to private residences, participants in the “Pride in Your Property” competition organized by the Town of Ponoka, and several key locations indicating how well the town was managing its facilities and how much the residents were able to make use of them to maintain a quality lifestyle.

Mirza, a second year judge, and Cote, who has been judging for four years, said they were also impressed by the attitude of the town staff and the pride they take in showcasing their efforts and achievements.

component of growth in any community, both in the economic sense of rising population and increasing commercial activity and in the wider sense of enhancing what the residents can take from their life in a specific community, including the pride of belonging there.

She said in the Communities in Bloom concept, three Ps were the key components: people, plants and pride.

The judges also took part in a community BBQ lunch at Fort Ostell museum, sponsored by Sommer Home Hardware, to mingle with residents and get information from them about the life in the community.

Cote said they would prepare their report and submit it to the provincial chapter of the organization and that the town would learn how many blooms it was awarded on Sept. 17, when a ceremony in Cold Lake will see the results announced.

Competition winners announced The community BBQ was also the scene for the announcement of the winners of the town’s “Pride in Your Property” competition.

Announcing the results, Wes Amendt, town’s director of community services, said despite the fact that there were fewer nominations in the competition this year, the judges had a more difficult time deciding the winners because of the high class of the entries. In order to be able to recognize more of the nominees, Amendt said the judges of the competition had decided to create a new category of awards, which they named “yard in progress.”

The winner in the business category was Service Credit Union, who will receive a $300 credit in their utility bills. Second place was Town and Country supplies. Reid Manor and Walrus and The Carpenter were recognized for special mention.

Marie Remyn was the winner of the residential category, earning a $300 credit on her utility bill.

She was followed by Jim and Marge Ashbaugh family with a $200 credit, and the third place went to Jac and Jeannette van den Broek with $100 utility credit.

In the new category of yard in progress, Sara Dreidger and Maryann Novotney tied for the first place.

PONOKA NEWS 3 Left lodged - A female driver and her infant were fortunately not injured in this collision early in the afternoon on Friday, July 15 at the intersection of Highway 2A and Township Road 432. Police, ambulance and East District fire crews responded when the vehicle allegedly attempted to avoid the leftturning semi-tractor trailer unit, but ended up lodging the front passenger side between the truck’s driver side wheel and the fuel tank. RCMP did issue at least one ticket to the female driver.

Sign was okay, driving pattern not - Judge Wells feels vindicated, appeal is possible

BY JORDIE DWYER PONOKA NEWS A Ponoka man is feeling some mixed emotions following the outcome of his court case.

Robert Wells, 67, stood in Ponoka Provincial Court on Friday, July 15 to hear the judge proclaim him guilty of the stunting charge from last fall. His sentence was a fine for $814 with the judge stating the higher amount was determined through the principles of equality in sentencing, since people who simply pay the ticket or plead guilty early are presumed to receive a lower sentence.

Wells was given a ticket after being pulled over following some complaints about the sign on his vehicle with an expletive statement regarding now former Prime Minister Stephen Harper.

Wells fought the ticket and represented himself during

the trial - ironically held on April 1, 2016 - where he challenged that his freedom of expression was being denied.

In his decision, Judge Bart Rosborough ruled that Wells was correct - that his rights to freedom of expression were violated and he would be acquitted - if that was the only factor he had to look at with regards to the charge.

Judge Rosborough, who provided a 28-page written judgment of his ruling, explained during sentencing that stunting is an act that constitutes performing stunts or other activity that distracts, startles or interferes with other users of the road.

“So, that includes both the sign and your driving behaviour. While I concluded that your rights were violated with regard to the sign, I did not believe your evidence about your driving pattern and accepted the testimony

of the RCMP officer and the one female witness,” said the judge.

Outside the courtroom, Wells stated that he believes he proved his case regarding his right to have the sign on his car and reiterated his testimony that he did nothing wrong and followed all of the rules of the road.

He will take a few days to pour over the written decision before deciding whether he will launch an appeal of the verdict.

Back on Aug. 16, 2015, Wells was given a ticket after being pulled over by RCMP after a pair of complaints about the big pink “F___ Harper” sign on his vehicle and refusing to take it down when requested. He took the issue to trial as he believed the ticket stemmed from what the sign stated rather than his driving.

A number of years ago, Wells was in the spotlight

for a similar sign about then Alberta Premier Ralph Klein though police in Edmonton determined he had done nothing illegal.

A few weeks ago I stumbled across an amusing and telling cartoon. It featured Snoopy and Charlie Crown.

Says Charlie to Snoopy (lying on his roof): “ I hear you are thinking of writing a book of Theology. I hope you have a good title.” Responds Snoopy, “I have the perfect title; ‘Has It Ever Occurred To You That You Might Be Wrong?’”

Funny and telling; ironic and challenging. And uncomfortably close to an embarrassing truth. Many religious folk, and religious organizations…Churches…have no trouble in telling others that they are wrong, but have a very difficult time imaging that they themselves might be wrong! Usually, the disagreement over who’s right and who’s wrong focuses on the content of what a person

or a group believes.

I recently finished a book dealing with just this problem. The book, The Sin of Certainty by Peter Enns. Enns makes the point that people who make a big deal about “what you believe” to be called a ‘legitimate’ Christian, is mostly a mental exercise involving the adding up of crucial beliefs to make a proper list of “beliefs.” It’s that list of beliefs, firmly held, that makes one a good Christian.

Enn’s book points out that the word translated “believe” by many English Bibles, is also properly translated to the word “trust,” and that word does not involve a mental exercise, but rather a total human response. “Trust” is like what you do when you sit down in a chair. You ‘trust’ that the chair will be there,

and that it will support your body. No mental exercise is involved. It is the response of the whole human in action that counts.

Enns makes the point that Christian “believing” is about trusting God in the way we trust a chair. Believing that God “Is”, and acting on that trust, is what Christian life is about.

Trusting God…trusting in any way…is much more demanding than believing a whole bunch of statements that make you “right” and therefore “saved.” If one’s ultimate security is based on the statements one “believes,” then your trust is in your beliefs, rather than on God, or anything else. If you are confident because of your “beliefs”, then you really don’t need God at all.

You have your beliefs!

The message of Holy Scripture, from beginning to end, is that our Creator is also our redeemer, and loves everything that is created, including human beings – you and me. All through both Hebrew and Christian scripture, we hear the word of love from the God of Israel, Isaac and Jacob. Granted, in many places, the prophets tell us of God’s frustration and anger that humans manage to ignore the love of the Creator, and go their own foolish and mostly self-destructive ways.

But always that call is to respond to, and return to, the love that God lavishes on us.

Reflections of Ponoka

We will never forget our childhood up at the hospital grounds

BY MIKE RAINONE AND YVETTE STACK FOR THE NEWS Once again it is a pleasure, especially for those of us who grew up so many years ago in a neat little red brick house with our parents on the very palatial and busy grounds of the Provincial Mental Hospital (now Centennial Centre) near Ponoka, and to bring back some of the countless memories and names through the wonderful and touching stories of Yvette Stack and friends. Here is some more of her nostalgic journey, which she always loves to share with family, friends, and many others as a special tribute to the countless hospital patients, staff, and families of then and now: I don’t think any of us realized how fortunate we were to be growing up in such a protected environment, in good sturdy houses with running water (the town still didn’t have water utilities), and the acres and acres of fields and gardens to roam in.

Because many patients worked around the grounds, we regularly saw what outsiders would consider bizarre behaviour. We sometimes saw people talking to themselves, introducing themselves as celebrities, wearing unusual outfits and hairstyles, and

sometimes having grand mal seizures. We were friends with many of these patients, and I know that this exposure to different personalities during my formative years has helped me and I suspect all of us who shared this unique childhood, to be comfortable and respectful around people who may be a little “different”.

As to the school bus, we must have been on it together for at least one year. I went to boarding school at the convent in Morinville for grades 10, 11 and 12 starting in Sept. 1950, but I fondly remember the kids around my age on the bus were Mary Stokes, Miriam Scott, Stan Clapp, Margaret Byers, and Betty Lou Smith, who had bright red hair and was Shirley Eileen’s younger sister. From the farm, there was Marge Seagrave and the Liddell girls, Judy and Lois and Dorothy, but they were quite a bit older, and then from the chicken farm was the Ames girls, Bev and Marilyn.

I don’t remember any family named Thompson at all, but I do recall those little houses back there, especially going to them all on Halloween. The Mollers lived there, too, and I think their little girl was named Patsy. Next to JA Smith before the Uylletts, I think it

At some point Dr. Schofield and his little family lived there, too.

Clarence and Georgina King, who had no children, lived in that little house as you said,

and he always had a fantastic garden. He was the baker at the hospital, and she worked in the business office. We always went to her to get our paycheques.

We lived in three different houses along our road. We lived downtown until I was in Grade 4, then moved to

one of the two big houses that weren’t duplexes. We were there for six years, then the duplex at the very end, next to Sitters for one or two years, then the little house next to JA Smith, after the other Smiths moved away. Mom loved that funny little house and lived there for ten years.

I also think about the neighbourhood. This is how I remember the row of houses: Bailey, Oness, Thom, JA Smith, Richie and Flo Smith, G.A.F. Jones (a very kindly older couple who moved away while we were there and I can’t remember who replaced them), us, Thorn, Bedard, Chandler (then Watson) Gordoniere, Ayers, you (meaning Mike Rainone), Scott, Bowdens, Stokes, Hughes, Kitchen, Sitters, and one family who had lots of kids.

There were the Mayleds in the little brick house at the top of the hill across from the top of the row, and then there was that row of wooden houses on the other side of the water tower where Roberts, another Watson family and the McGeachies lived, along with others who I can’t remember.

This is really a nostalgia trip.

It’s been ages since I thought about all those people. My kids are always fascinated when I talk about our life there. We didn’t realize how different our lives were. In general, I think we were pretty lucky kids. Did you take music lessons from Mrs. Byers? She was so nice, such a good teacher, and loved directing us for the Christmas pageants.

We will share a few more of Yvette’s favourite memories later in Reflections.

Our world is being invaded by Pokémon Go! There was no such thing as a Nintendo game around our house when my brother and I were growing up, but much later I do remember buying the popular Nintendo game box for our kids which plugged into the television. I believe some of the games included Donkey Kong, Super Mario, Legend of Zelda, and on and on as this new video craze soon went ballistic.

Yours truly, who grew up around the arena, the ball diamond and the pool hall, was never really good at playing those fancy electronic games and still continue to lose to my grandchildren, but now I just love to sit back and chuckle at the totally wild and wacky invasion of electronic games and gadgets.

I know that I will never take part in this new virtual reality experience of Pokémon Go, but me and my senior coffee buddies will be out and about watching the masses roaming around, checking out the ‘pokestops’, while trying to find those cute, colorful, and elusive so-called ‘pocket creatures.’ Believe it or not this new Pokémon adventure already has 729 revealed species who are blessed with

Opinion Nice and Turkey, how much do we really know?

How much truth is there to the widely used quote “Perception is everything”? Are we blinded by our prejudices, misconceptions or by simply what we are led to believe without questioning, thanks mostly to official information and social media?

Last week, the world was shaken by two events, first the death of 84 people in Nice, France by a truck driven onto them by a man of Tunisian origin and the failed coup attempt in Turkey that came some 24 hours later.

In the Nice incident, French President Francois Hollande was quick to label it a “terrorist attack”, implicitly associating it with Islamic terrorism, a link that ISIS was quick to jump on to claim the responsibility for the crime.

As the investigators kept working on the profile of the perpetrator of the massacre, however, the picture that emerged was somewhat different from the one Hollande painted in the immediate aftermath of the incident. French police said they couldn’t find any convincing evidence that the driver was radicalized by Islamic extremism and that he was more a man of mental health issues and a lot of family troubles. Political instability and violence, coupled with the economic instability and the widening gap between the wealthy and the poor throughout the western world is the recipe for the socio-economic order that has prevailed since the end of the Second World War coming perilously close to collapsing.

While the phrase has been used for as long as I can remember and wherever I have lived across the province, I’m not certain it continues to apply given the rapidly changing states of our weather patterns in recent years or the changes we see in how the climate seems to be moving.

Whether that is good or bad, I can’t say for certain since I’m not a scientist, a weather specialist, climatologist or even a farmer since everyone knows they are just as good at predicting the weather as those ones on television.

What I do know is that the weather has been changing at a faster pace than what I was used to seeing growing up on a farm in northwestern Alberta three to four decades ago or in the intervening years from then to now.

I’m going to start with winter, since that is where the biggest difference is that I can quantify through words.

Okay, for all of you wondering if I’m advocating climate change or for those that say all of this can be explained by some phenomenon with ocean waters, I’m like the rest of the regular people.

I too am struggling to gather what information I can about it all, disseminate the goofy and the absurd, figure out what to make out of studies that conflict more often than those on which diets work or don’t, and make sense of what governments keep telling us about what we need to do to change what is happening or not happening depending on who is talking.

What I do know is the weather is getting less predictable, more intense and is changing the manner and places where certain plants used to grow well and for how long.

I also know there are no easy answers and there will never be consensus on what and why this is taking place as well as what to do about it. The only thing, us, regular people can do is whatever we think is necessary - from recycling to lobbying for change to doing nothing.

It’s a choice you can make. I, and my family, for one will do what we can for as long as we can and for what we can afford.

But that is…just an observation.

New 50 Avenue Bridge is Nearing Completion The new 50 Avenue bridge and realigned roadway are just weeks away from being opened to traffic and pedestrians.

The only work remaining for contractors to finish is the final grading and paving of the roadway, installation of guard rails and approach rails on the bridge, painting crosswalks on the roadway, installing a four-way stop at the bottom of Chicken Hill (46 St. and 50 Ave.), and landscaping on the side slopes of the 50 Ave. roadway.

Rain Delays Due to rain delays over the past week and depending on upcoming weather conditions, all paving and final roadwork on the new bridge and road realignment are expected to wrap up by early-to-mid August. The Diamond Willow Trail route that was closed to the public during the bridge construction will reopen at the same time.The old 50 Ave. bridge is expected to be removed by the end of August.

“Work has progressed smoothly and on schedule with no delays throughout construction of the new bridge. It has only been the recent rainy weather that has held up the paving process,” says Justin Caslor, the Town of Ponoka Engineering Technician who is overseeing the bridge construction project.

Caslor explains that flooding at a Husky plant near Lloydminster, which supplies much of the oil used by paving contractors in Alberta, resulted in a delayed start to the grading and paving work on the new bridge and realigned 50 Ave. roadway last week.

Alberta Transportation Approves Temporary 3-Way Stop To help ease traffic flow over the next few weeks until the new bridge opens, Alberta Transportation has given the Town approval to install a temporary three-way stop at 50 St. and Highway 53. The new three-way stop took effect on Monday, July 18. The speed limit along that stretch of highway remains unchanged at 60 km/hr.

“We received a positive response from residents and law enforcement officials to the temporary four-way stop that was installed at that intersection during Stampede week.

This three-way stop should improve increased traffic flow and safety at that intersection until the new bridge opens, making it easier for traffic to turn east from 50 St. onto Highway 53 during peak traffic hours,” says Ponoka Mayor Rick Bonnett.

A ribbon cutting ceremony and community BBQ will be held to mark the opening of the new 50 Ave. bridge and to commemorate the old bridge. the opening of the new bridge and to commemorate the old 50 Ave. bridge – which at 107 years old, spans almost the entire history of the Town of Ponoka. A long-time Ponoka resident will be invited to speak to the history of the old bridge from a personal perspective at the opening ceremony and to participate in the ribbon cutting.

Bridge Naming Contest A naming contest for the new bridge will also be announced at the ribbon cutting ceremony. The public will be given details on how to submit suggested names for the new bridge. A panel of judges appointed by Town Council will select the winning name for the new bridge later this fall, based on the geographic and historical significance of the name to Ponoka and the bridge. The winner will receive a $200 Town of Ponoka gift certificate that can be used toward a Ponoka Aquaplex membership or as a credit toward the winner’s utility bill.

Further details about the bridge naming contest, the ribbon cutting ceremony and the community BBQ will be announced in the coming weeks on the Hometown Weekly News page, and on the Town website and social media pages.

digital recording equipment and a process by which anyone can request access to the recordings.

Chief administrative officer (CAO) Albert Flootman explained that other municipalities that employ the system Ponoka is considering find it quite effective with good reviews about the quality and ability to manage it along with the audio files created.

The system, recommended by the town’s information technology department, consists of a portable digital recorder and two microphones that allow for sound to be picked up in a 60x60 foot range.

Flootman added the fact its portable makes it perfect for council’s current situation, with not having a permanent meeting location, as well as the ability for it to be used elsewhere or for something else if/when council has a permanent set up.

Recordings will be held for 30 days following the approval of those meeting’s minutes, which typically occurs at the following meeting. After that time, the recordings will be deleted.

Permission to listen to the recording before the minutes are approved would only be allowed for town staff and members of council, though staff would need CAO approval while council members would simply have to submit a written request with a reason stated for wanting access.

Councillor Marc Yaworski expressed concern about having to provide a reason to listen to the recording prior to the minutes being approved. However, both Flootman and Mayor Rick Bonnett believed there would be no reason to deny that type of request

and councillor Teri Underhill stated one could simply state they wanted to listen to it as a reason since the policy doesn’t state what could or could not be listed.

Bridge celebration A formal opening of the new bridge, complete with a ribbon cutting and community barbecue, was approved by council. The party on the bridge will take place the day prior to it being opened to traffic - expected to be sometime during the first two weeks of August - and will see two locals, one youth and one long-time resident, perform the ribbon cutting alongside the mayor with speakers to talk about the history and significance of the old bridge.

Sandra Smith, the town’s communication manager, presented the idea along with a contest to name the new bridge at the meeting, both of which were accepted unanimously.

More details about the event will be decided upon when the paving and other finishing touches are completed.

Meet the ministers Council has decided that getting together with Brian Mason, Alberta’s Transportation and Infrastructure minister, is the highest priority they have when they head to the Alberta Urban Municipalities Association convention in October.

Pay for town councillors’ extra functions finalized

A motion was presented at their regular meeting on Tuesday, July 12 to approve the latest revision of the town’s council, board and committee remuneration policy that was changed and passed last October and then reviewed three times prior to being formally approved last week.

“We have to pre-read and deal with a lot of information.

Council members do give lots of time, effort and money for this job and it starts to chip away at people’s livelihoods. We want people to run and ensure good people run and are here to do a good job.”

wanted to move forward and expects to be active in all sorts of committees, but the perception of council deciding their own pay just looks bad.

Bonnett agreed, but added when it comes down to it, they need to decide and can’t keep tossing it back on administration.

But before the motion could reach a vote, councillor Teri Underhill came up with a few amendments that were necessary - which included further changes to the claim form, plus adding committee of the whole as a paid meeting in addition to reducing the number of meetings missed back to three from the suggested five before pay is docked.

Council approved the amended motion unanimously, councillor Tim Falkiner was absent.

One denied, one deferred after questions give rise to concerns

Previous development decisions are now placing pressures on Ponoka County with how to move forward with new development applications.

Four public hearings on separate rezoning applications were held on Tuesday, July 12 as part of Ponoka County’s regular meeting with two requests to subdivide portions to country residential hobby farm being approved.

The other two applications - which involved rezoning land for multi-lot country residential divisions - ended with one denial and one being deferred to council’s next meeting on Aug. 23.

The issue at the top of the list regarding both applications was about vehicle access in and out of the two proposed projects as well as what the potential increased traffic would do to surrounding roads if those issues aren’t addressed. However, it wasn’t the only issue regarding each application.

Daryl and Roberta Renaud put forward a proposal to rezone 52 acres that is presently bordered by three developments in the Meridian Beach area Meridian Country Estates, North Shores and Lone Tree Estates.

While the residents that showed up for the hearing and those in the written submissions weren’t opposed, all of the concerns expressed were about access.

Ponoka County chief administrative officer Charlie Cutforth explained the three previous subdivisions were approved with one access point, via either Range Road 284 or through Meridian Beach, something that now poses a problem for the county. It was added that traffic and an incident that blocked the road in Meridian Beach left part of the area with no access if an emergency took place, something residents are extremely concerned about.

Annual agricultural fair focuses on pulses Entry for public will be free this year

BY MUSTAFA ERIC PONOKA NEWS United Nations General Assembly has declared 2016 as the “International Year of Pulses” and Ponoka Agricultural Society has taken note of that and decided to organize this year’s Home, Hobby and Horticultural show around that theme.

Pulses are dried legumes, which play a major role in nutrition of not only human beings, but also in the enrichment of the soil they grow in.

With a view to raising awareness on the benefits and use of pulses in addition to its overall mission “to promote, support and encourage agriculture opportunities in our urban and rural community”, the ag society is introducing a major change to its annual show this year: Entrance will be free to public

viewing of the show through the August 19-21 weekend. But they will appreciate donations of non-perishable food items to go to Ponoka Food Bank.

Amanda Carleton, urban assistant taking the lead for publicity in this year’s event, said this year they would be particularly focusing on expanding the participation of youth in the fair and that the competition in junior garden division would have a special focus attached to it in this year’s show.

However, entries for this category will have to be submitted earlier than other categories and judging will also be scheduled for earlier than the general competition divisions.

Carleton said they were inviting everybody interested to showcase their involvement with soil and nature, be it growing vegetables in their garden or flowers in pots. She said she would love to have the entries in the town’s “Pride in Your Property” competition showcased in their annual

County approves request to pay for maintenance services Annual payments to be made to Meridian Beach community

BY JORDIE DWYER PONOKA NEWS One way or the other, Ponoka County was going to have to pay.

That was the consensus of council at their meeting on Tuesday, July 12 regarding a request from the Meridian Beach Homeowners Society to fund the operation and maintenance of several public facilities at the resort.

Ponoka County chief ad-

ministrative officer Charlie Cutforth explained to council that when the area was being developed, with the blessing of the council of the day, the developer would build a number of community facilities that would eventually be absorbed by a homeowners association and that the county would be expected to contribute to maintaining these facilities.

quest, so this isn’t a surprise,” he said.

The request is for an annual amount of about $17,200 to operate and maintain a community hall, boat launch, two beaches, a beach volleyball area, two playgrounds and three washroom facilities.

Cutforth added that the community presently allows the public to use these facilities and if the council decided not to go through with the request, it’s quite likely the society would turn it all back to the county who would then be obligated to provide those services and likely more.

Council approved the contribution although they also decided it would be looked at each year through its budget process instead of simply placing it in as something that would be expected each year.

Tax struggles Cutforth informed council that the county, as of the end of June, has outstanding tax arrears of around $2 million a figure that in normal years is about $400,000.

“Of that amount, $900,000 is from 2015 and about half of that number is from the

two oil and gas company bankruptcies we are dealing with,” he stated.

A majority of remaining outstanding amount is from other oil and gas companies that are struggling with their cashflows, he added, explaining that the county is looking at continuing to work with those that are trying to make payments and will accommodate them if they come to them with a schedule to complete those payments.

“Unfortunately, that approximately $450,000 will likely remain with us until the bankruptcy issues are resolved,” Cutforth said.

However, the overall budget outlook remains good with one bonus being that drilling permit revenue is triple the $25,000 that was originally projected. One other positive is that the two county fire departments are generating some significant dollars after a large capital spending spree this spring.

Up to June 30, revenue received was about $142,000 with the majority of that figure coming from Alberta Transportation and

Infrastructure for attendance at motor vehicle collisions.

The West District (Rimbey) department - which has responded to 67 calls in the first six months - has invoiced about $67,000, while the East District department - that has responded to 43 calls invoiced about $47,000 since they began operations on April 28.

Roads moving forward Contractors and county crews are doing well on completing road work in spite of the rainy weather lately, according to the public works report from superintendent Herb Schwingel.

Grade work is done on three projects so far - including the major widening of Menaik Road (Township 442) - while chip sealing has been completed on four roads with others planned to start soon if the weather holds and more than one third of the road upgrades planned for the year are now finished.

Paving has been delayed especially the Westlake Road turning lanes project and boat launch - because of the rain pushing back several of the

contractor’s other projects.

Schwingel stated they expect that project to be done around the end of August or early in September.

He added the county will exceed the number of dust abatement treatments done last year, as they have already done 200 applications with a third set slated to be done this month.

Meanwhile, the work on Dakota Road (Range Road 273) is waiting on wetlands approvals from Alberta Environment with Schwingel stating it’s questionable whether it will move forward this year as a result.

Cutforth added that the province requires compensation be paid to the department if any work is done in or will disturb a wetland with that money being used for whatever project the department deems necessary.

“Instead, we would like to see us be able to use our own projects - such as the plan we have to turn the Anderson gravel pit into a lake at the end of its life - to offset or be used as compensation,” he said.

Western art auction continues to see growth

BY JEFFREY HEYDEN-KAYE PONOKA NEWS A range of diverse and original artworks were up for grabs during this year’s Ponoka Stampede western art auction held on Canada Day. Organizers Inge Sybrandi and Ponoka Stampede vice-president Blair Vold were pleased with increased interest, especially considering the Calgary Stampede’s western art auction has changed in recent years.

For Vold the auction is another addition of the western heritage that makes the Ponoka Stampede week so popular.

“I think there was a great crowd and it’s just part of the Ponoka Stampede.”

“Inge’s done a great job, she’s a local artist, and she’s brought these people to Ponoka,” he added.

For Sybrandi’s part there is much trepidation before the beginning of the sale. Her biggest worries were that the sale wouldn’t go as well as planned or some unforeseen event would make the sale difficult. Despite those worries, the sale exceeded her expectations with strong bids and a large crowd to watch it unfold at the Stagecoach Saloon.

Sybrandi’s goal is to bring quality work to Ponoka that has a balance of new and established artists with work

that can meet the expectations of buyers. “Every year the quality is getting better.”

Among the submissions, including the original painting of Jake Vold riding Mucho Dinero by Lacombe artist Kim Penner — which sold for $3,900 — were submissions by rodeo entertainers Ash (Crash) Cooper and Dr. Lynn Phillips. While most people know Cooper and his hijinks in the Stampede grounds, not many know he is also an accomplished artist.

“Entertainers crossover into artists and vice-versa because what Dr. Lynn does and what I do is creative, just in a different medium,” said Cooper.

He enjoys the fun that comes along with rodeo entertaining but also enjoys taking a different pace with artworks.

“You’ve got creativity and you’ve gotta let ‘er go.”

Phillips said his biggest challenge is actually staying focused on whatever project he is working on next. From hosting radio shows to rodeo announcing to painting and writing, Phillips enjoys all of it.

“The hardest thing is focusing,” joked Cooper.

Both admit that sometimes their best ideas come when driving or travelling from one location to the next.

Stampede bucks off economy, sets new record 80th annual event draws more than 80,000 through the gates

BY JORDIE DWYER PONOKA NEWS The numbers seemed to work out wonderfully for the 2016 Ponoka Stampede.

This year’s 80th edition drew more than 80,000 fans through the gates, setting a new alltime attendance record.

Blair Vold, Ponoka Stampede director, stated that while numbers seem to be going down elsewhere, the fact the Stampede was able to grow was very pleasing to see.

“Seeing another 2,000 people come to the Stampede this year, given the economy Albertans are still dealing with, was good for us to see,” Vold said in an interview on Monday, July 11.

“I think a lot of people chose to stay close to home and take in the good family entertainment we offer at a reasonable price with the free camping

being a draw as well.”

One more positive Vold explained was the new addition to the pre-Stampede line up - the Ride, Rock & Roll professional bull riding competition that also included a concert from a pair of rock bands from the 1980s and 90s.

“The idea behind the event was to bring in a different demographic of people that might not be rodeo fans and introduce them to it, hoping they would stay around for the rest of the week to take in some other performances,” he said, adding they are looking at some way to possibly incorporate the event into Stampede Week.

“I think that event certainly helped and the Clint Black concert was definitely a success. Meanwhile, the Dallas Smith concert was spectacular and came on such a beautiful evening. There were lots of

people at both and the fact that KG radio selfie went viral along with the huge walk up crowd that packed the infield made it even better than we could’ve hoped.”

Vold added the tornado scare that same evening where a confirmed tornado touched down in a couple spots on the town’s north end - was a concern, but their evacuation plan was in place and ready though it wasn’t implemented.

As for next year, Vold explained that planning is already underway with each director going over their notes of what they thought worked and didn’t while ideas to improve

things are being discussed.

“There will always be little things, little tweaks, but what we are looking at for sure is possibly paving the midway area, constructing some new washrooms and adding some more seating for the contestants and their families,” he said.

“As well, we are also working on making sure our performances remain snappy and first class since it’s hard to make people sit for more than two and a half hours.”

On the entertainment side, Amanda Payne’s horse act was a big hit among the fans and Vold stated it was something special to watch, while also

maintaining the tradition and heritage of what the Stampede is all about.

“I know we want to see how much more we can grow, though I don’t know how much bigger we can get for a seven-day event,” Vold said, who will be running for president when the Stampede association holds its annual general meeting in October.

“We have a great group of directors and we listen to everybody, so with 14 people and all of the volunteers and tremendous support Ponoka provides, the Ponoka Stampede is very fortunate.”

Next year’s Ponoka Stampede will run from June 27 to July 3.

Rain kept at bay for annual slo-pitch event

BY JORDIE DWYER PONOKA NEWS The threats were there all weekend, but the rain somehow stayed away.

The sixth annual Ponoka Lions Stan Baliant Slo-Pitch tournament felt a few drops and was nearly blown away by the wind on opening night, but otherwise the 18-team event went off without a hitch over the weekend at the Riverside diamonds.

Tournament organizer Irene Baliant, who along with her

daughters took over running the event four years ago after her husband Stan who started the event passed away, said everyone was pleased the rain missed the event that began Friday, July 15 with the finals going Sunday, July 17.

“The only concern we had was on Friday night with the wind, it nearly blew our big tent away,” she said.

The Big Valley Stealers won the event by defeating the Free Agents from Clive in the A-final, while the B-final went to Ponoka’s Asylum who beat Red Deer’s Konfusion with another Ponoka squad, Alkabolics, winning the C-final over top of Giant Midgets from Rocky Mountain House.

A total of eight local teams - six from Ponoka and one each from Crestomere and Maskwacis - participated, but many of the out-of-town teams had some sort of representation or affiliation with Ponoka.

At least two of the three Red Deer teams had some local players or former residents as did the pair of squads from Leduc and Edmonton as well as the team making the longest trek - Peace River.

Baliant stated this was the fourth straight year a now former Ponoka resident - who lives and works in the province’s far northwest - has brought a team down for the tournament.

Local hockey player moving up among the elite group

BY JORDIE DWYER PONOKA NEWS One product of the Ponoka Minor Hockey system is starting to make a big name for himself, although he doesn’t quite see it that way.

Reagan Rabbit, who is from the Montana First Nation and played his minor hockey locally until heading off to play Bantam AAA in Leduc the past two seasons, has found himself among the elite players in Alberta.

The 15-year-old, five-foot 10, 163pound defenceman played on Team Central in the Alberta Cup this past March in Canmore and then was selected to participate in the Top 80 camp held July 8-10 in Camrose as just one of 24 defenceman with a chance to play on Team Alberta and possibly on Team West at the annual Under-17 World Hockey Challenge - slated to go this winter in Sault Ste. Marie, Ont. from Oct. 30 to Nov. 5.

“It was a long and hard weekend, but I learned a lot,” Rabbit said in a phone interview last week following the camp.

“We all knew each other and played with or against each other the past two years. To be picked among the top 24 defencemen was definitely a shock. You do compare yourself to those at the top,

but only to show where you are and what you need to work on.”

Rabbit has played the past two seasons with the Leduc Bantam AAA Oil Kings - earning 11 points and 62 penalty minutes in 36 games last season. He also played nine regular season and five playoff games, grabbing six points in that time, for Leduc’s minor midget AAA club.

His size along with the continued improvement of his game got him noticed, not only by Hockey Alberta, but by scouts from the Western Hockey League in this, his draft year.

“Getting invites to several WHL camps was a big shock for me,” he said.

“Being in my second year, my goal was to get one invite and maybe selected in the draft. I got a number of calls during the season and the night before the draft I was told to keep my phone on and ready to hear back.”

Well, that didn’t happen - and according to his parents Jason and Darrilynn he was somewhat disappointed, though he feels the fact he wasn’t selected was not a huge deal.

“It really wasn’t that big a deal as I didn’t expect it, but then the calls started to roll in with invites to a number of camps. That certainly made me feel better, brought my confidence up and

showed that I could still compete so that really felt good,” Rabbit said.

In fact, he received seven invitations to WHL rookie camps and one main camp, which father Jason understands is huge for such a young player. Rabbit is planning on going to the rookie camp of the Lethbridge Hurricanes and then next week taking part in the main camp for the Kootenay Ice. “He played in Ponoka from novice up until it was suggested he try out for (Leduc Bantam AAA) and then made it as a first year. Reagan doesn’t think he’s elite but the fact he was chosen among the best 80 players is a big accomplishment and the experience he will get this fall is something most 18 year-old players don’t get,” stated Jason.

“The difference there is now is it only gets harder from here and Reagan has basically done this flying by the seat of his pants, but you do the right things and doors begin to open.”

His dad added the disadvantages of being from a small town and not having the same opportunities players from larger cities have hasn’t really hurt, instead allowed Reagan to remain a kid with friends and being able to do other things.

“We are still happy he’s been able to still be a kid,” Jason stated, “though this

Pirates sit on top Longest undefeated streak in team history SUBMITTED BY TODD LEWIS The Central Alberta Buccaneers have secured first place in the AFL with a victory over the Calgary Gators.

On the rainy Saturday, July 16, the Bucs travelled south to take on the third place Gators in Calgary. The playoff implications of this game were significant – a Buccaneer loss would mean that they, the Gators, and the Fort McMurray Monarchs would be in a three-way tie for first place.

The seedings for playoffs would then be decided by score differentials (which the Bucs would have likely lost). The pirate crew had to win against the Gators if they wanted to clinch first place (and the favourable playoff schedule that comes with first place).

The Bucs kicked off their game well. The defense was able to hold off the Gators’ tandem-quarterback team of Jordan Heather and Darryl Leason. Numerous Gator passes were knocked down, incomplete and even picked off by the talented Buccaneer secondary. The Gators run game was eaten up as well. In addition to the defense, the Bucs special teams were tenacious; the so-called “Spades” flew around the field and played a very physical game. Going into the first half, the Bucs led 27-7.

The pirate offense was sharp as well; despite heavy Gator pressure and blitzing, QB Brandon Leyh found his receivers downfield (for both short and large pass-

ing attempts). In the fourth quarter, Leyh went down with an ankle injury and was unable to continue playing; team offense slowed in the final quarter. The Gators made a final push and managed to narrow the gap with a few quick touchdowns (and short kickoff attempts). Regardless, the Bucs held on for the victory, 43-32.

With this win, Central Alberta is now 6-0 on the season. Not only does this secure first-place, it marks the first time the Bucs have gone undefeated this far into the regular season. The team will be striving to hold on for the two remaining games of the regular season.

The next matchup for the Bucs is at home against the Airdrie Irish. The Irish were the league expansion team in 2015; while they are still building, they have some talented players that will definitely challenge the Bucs. Additionally, both teams are continuing their new Pink Game tradition; both charge their players and fans to raise pledges and dress in pink for the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation. The team that raises the most pledges earns the Pink Game title and holds it until the following year (the Irish were the victors in 2015). Golf is a hard game to master, so that makes growing the game more difficult.

That’s one of the reasons, Rob MacPherson, the head professional and general manager at the Ponoka Community Golf Club, instituted a junior golf camp about three years ago.

“It’s an intensive three-day program to help the youth golfers get better,” MacPherson said in an interview during the camp, which ran from July 4 to 6 and attracted some local golfers along with youth from as far away as Calgary.

“In order to get better, you need to work hard on your game. Playing golf is difficult and if you don’t feel like you are improving then you tend to get discouraged quickly.

It can be lots of fun, but if you are struggling at it, then the more likely it is you will back off or stop altogether.

“With this program, the aim is to peek the kids’ interest, to help them improve their game so that they are still playing golf in 20 years, which keeps the sport growing.”

The camp is kept small intentionally - just seven students - in order to provide a lot of one-on-one instruction.

The students focused on learning a variety of skills - from bunker shots to reading greens to placement of their shots - during the mornings they got to have some fun by playing a round in the afternoon.

“The idea of the camp is for kids that want to progress their game and are a bit more serious about improving their skills in order to take their golf game to another level,” he added.

REED, Marcella Marcella Zella Reed was born July 22,1929, to Lloyd and Ruby Wilkins at Mainesburg, Pennsylvania. She married her high school sweetheart on July 7, 1949. They moved to Three Hills, Alberta to attend Prairie Bible Institute. While there they had three children Gordon, Tim, and Ruth. They moved to Kentucky in 1953 to work at a children’s home.

While there they had two more daughters Tamara and Sharon.

They moved back to Three Hills in 1957 and were on staff at Prairie Bible Institute. They then moved to Gull Lake and the Ponoka area until the present time. Mom suffered from Parkinson’s disease and was in the Northcott Long Term Care Facility for the past three years. Marcella was welcomed to her heavenly home on Sunday, July 17, 2016. Left to mourn her passing while yet celebrating a life well lived is her loving and faithful husband Bob; son Gordon and his wife Betty, their children, Don and Karen (Tulston and Braxton), Tracy and Paddy (Dakota and Shelby), Chris and Deena (Colter, Baret, and Hayden), Jolene and Kyle Miller (AJ and Nichole); Tim’s children Jenni and Adrian Bright (Natalie, Matthew and Daniel), Charlie, Sandi and Filippo Falcone (Miriam, Benjamin and Ryan); Ruth and Doug Sept, their children Ben and Rachel (Mason, Arden and Reed), Ryan and KaraLyn (Molly, Henry, Tilly and Hattie), Jeremy and Krista; Tamara and Frank Roe, their children Kimberly and Will Hill (Ethan, Alaina and Giana), James, Jessica and Ryan Peachey, Stan and Amy, Sharon and Tess Gilchrist-Reed (Chris and Zach); sister Gloria Marple as well as many nieces and nephews. Florence Duke Florence Edith Duke was born on April 10, 1929 in Clive, Alberta to parents Helen and Earl Barnes and passed away on July 12, 2016 in Ponoka, Alberta at the age of 87 years. Florence will be lovingly remembered by her son Lyle Duke (Tita) and her daughter Carol Duke (Dolney Neal); her granddaughter Sherri Herman (Kelly), their daughter Amber and their son Brandon (Abigail Bouzane) and their children Maddox and Ana; her granddaughter Tammy Duke-Gauthier (Marc Gauthier) and their children Kaylen and Cody; her grandson Sheldon Duke (Michelle) and their children Faith and Sieanna Lou; and her grandson Joseph Duke; as well as many brothers and sisters. Florence was predeceased by her husband Leslie and her great-granddaughter Brianna Herman.

This past year has been challenging with her care and without the following persons it would have been impossible to allow her to remain in the comfort of her home. In our beliefs continued from page 4 It has always puzzled me that so many Christians focus on God’s frustration and anger, and frame their message as a warning about “damnation”, rather than on the call of the Creator that urges humans to turn their love and trust to God, and live fully as we are meant to live. It seems to me that the more conservative and rigid the Christian community is, the more the message is about threat and condemnation, and the less it is about the love and care of the Creator, who seeks our redemption, rather than our destruction.

The message of scripture, as I have read it all my life, is that we are invited to embrace the love that surrounds us, and live a life of justice and righteousness as God’s children. “Justice” and “righteousness” are about living this life in such a way that the outcast and the poor are treated with generosity in this life, rather than pretending that our “believing” makes us better than those who are rejected and impoverished in this world.

One of the basic instructions from God in the Hebrew scriptures is that we are to “welcome the stranger” – the outsider, the outcast, the refugee – and make room for them in our communities. Living as a Christian is not primarily about what one “believes”, but about how we belong in our faith community and how we behave in our day-to-day life.

“Belonging” is about how we live together in our communities.

Are these communities exclusive, rejecting, mean spirited? Or are they open, welcoming and intent on breaking down barriers and bringing people in?

“Behaving” is about the quality of our righteousness and our justice. Do we erect walls to keep people out? Do we hold our religion as superior to all others? Do we turn our back on the pain and distress of others?

Or do we behave as Jesus did, welcoming, healing and caring for those whose lives are crippled and damaged?

It’s all worth thinking about, especially if you are reading a book entitled ‘Has It Ever Occurred To You That You Might Be Wrong?’”

County rezoning continued from page 11 There potential second access options were presented, though Cutforth explained that the option of a road east through into the Lone Tree Estates wasn’t really feasible as a previous council promised that would not be done and it would dramatically affect both developments.

The other options were to upgrade and extend the road that leads to present waste water treatment facility or construct an access to Range Road 284 that would run along the north edge of Lone Tree Estates. Though Cutforth warned that last option would only be appropriate if council thought there would be no more development to the north, a possibility that he explained as “not realistic” given the amount of development going on around the lake and the expectation that it will continue to be busy.

His recommendation, which was accepted, was that council defer a decision on the rezoning until discussions about a reasonable second access option can be held, which is timely now since the resistance the county met in developing the road allowance to the west might not be as much now.

“Even if this development doesn’t proceed, there needs to be talks about another access to these developments. We don’t want to affect existing, but we can’t leave it alone again as it’s not acceptable to the area’s residents either,” he said. “(The county) needs to take responsibility for the piece meal decision-making and look at the potential if plans continue to the north.”

For the application by Battle River Carpentry, owned by Allan Vandenbroek, the 80 acre parcel

located along Range Road 252 southeast of Ponoka was proposed to be developed into a 10-lot subdivision split between six lots suitable for upscale homes housing of horses with the other four set at the east side of the property currently filled with trees.

During the hearing, Vandenbroek spoke of the interest there is in those kind of properties especially so close to town and his hopes to use the development for his family’s future and that of his business. He added the land is not good for agricultural purposes - which the county’s planning consultant agreed with.

However, a couple of adjacent landowners were on hand and told council that access is an issue, something council agreed with considering the potential for issues similar to what was discussed with the Renaud application. In addition, council worried about the proximity of the proposal to the nearby dairy farming operation, which may make it subject to provincial restrictions, as well as the fact there are no subdivisions presently in that area.

“The difference here is (with this application) is this the right location?” stated Cutforth.

“This would be a typical one for 10 lots if the adjacent land is similar - such as near the lakes - and what planning do we need if nearby owners want to develop their land. The challenging component with this application is that we are close to the dairy, will this have a negative impact on farm activity in the area and that these developments likely attract a different type of resident so you do run a risk here.”

Those challenges proved to be too much for council to accept and the proposed rezoning was denied.
