You have the opportunity to spend time in our resort-style setting with an abundance of worldclass scenery, many recreational amenities at your fingertips and a community with unparalleled friendliness. Although your tastes may be very specific I might suggest a visit to the world famous Othello Tunnels, a hike on our many beautiful trails, a visit to our stunning Memorial Park in the center of our District or if the weather is not cooperating with you‌ a swim or a relaxing hot tub session in our amazing recreation centre. I wish to issue a cautionary note however, the beauty and friendliness of our community and area is addictive. Many before you have come to visit and have stayed a lifetime. The quality of life that the residents and businesses of the District of Hope and the surrounding areas enjoy is second to none in the opinion of many. 150 YEARS OF HOPE As Canada prepares to celebrate its 150th anniversary, it’s time for Hope, Cascades & Canyons to look back on our last 150 years. By the time British Columbia joined confederation (1871), Hope had been a thriving settlement for thousands of years. Our place at the confluence of the Fraser and Coquihalla rivers and the edge of the Fraser Canyon makes Hope a natural stopping point along the journey for anything travelling between the interior and the coast. The town of Hope sits on traditional StĂł:lĹ? territory. Prior to European settlement, the thriving StĂł:lĹ? village of Ts’qo:ls existed on the current town site.

As this area represented the “best hopeâ€? for finding such a route, the Hudson’s Bay Company established Fort Hope at the proposed trailhead in 1848. In the years following the fur trade and the 1858 Fraser River Gold Rush, mining continued to support Hope and its residents. At the close of the 19th century, logging was rising to prominence and would continue to be our primary industry for the better part of the 20th century. As has always been the way of the people who live at natural junctions, we continue to welcome visitors to our community and share in the abundance we get to call our own. The last 150 years has been good to the people of Hope and this book helps to highlight that history and introduce the best we have to offer. Hope Visitor Guide 2017

RIDERS’ PARADISE

HOPE BIKE PARK Photo by: AdvantageHOPE

Regardless of the bike you have or your experience, Hope has a place for all visitors to ride. For cross-country cyclists, Hope is a popular destination to stop for the night as it offers some respite before the mountains to the Interior. For local and single-day riders, the steep hills outside of town offer some of the most challenging (and rewarding) riding in the area. Our mountain bike community has been growing over the last five years and new trails are being built all the time. With the addition of the Bike Park (behind the recreation centre), riders are now able to work on their skills before undertaking some of the more challenging trails in the mountains around town.

encounter a six per cent grade as soon as they reach the highway and do not stop climbing until they reach the Hope Slide rest area. This portion of Highway 3 offers relatively wide shoulders. Airport Distance: 10 km (one way) Beginner/low-intermediate Cyclists can either leave from downtown for a longer ride that includes Richmond Hill (Flood-Hope Road) or can drive to the airport and enjoy a three kilometre loop with no hills or traffic. The 20 kilometre loop from downtown is an easy introduction to road-riding that offers spectacular views of gliders around the airport.

Families, beginners, and those looking for a restful day on the bike will also find a variety of rides to do in and around Hope. Below you will find some of the local favourites for all types of riders and experience levels. For more information on trails and maps of the area, visit the Hope Visitor Centre. Note that all routes are multiuser and cyclists must adhere to the rules of the road.

Town Bike Route Distance: 7 km Beginner The marked bike path around town leads riders of any skill level past Memorial Park, Christ Church, the confluence of the Fraser and Coquihalla rivers, and the Hope Recreation Complex.

ROAD Hope Slide Distance: 18 km (one way) Advanced The ride to the Hope Slide is a great training ride for anyone endeavouring to do long-distance riding as well as a fun challenge for those who enjoy the climb as much as the descent. Cyclists

LIGHT TRAILS Kettle Valley Railway: Hope-Othello Distance: 8 km (roundtrip) Beginner This portion of the Kettle Valley Railway offers beginner trail riders an easy introduction to the KVR. This abandoned railway bed is now used for biking and hiking,

and entrances to the trail can be accessed at various points along the route. More adventurous cyclists may want to under take the multi-day journey from Hope to Midway along the old railway bed, but day riders will enjoy the nearly flat, double-wide trail that passes through the Othello Tunnels. Rotary Nature Trails Distance: 2 km (roundtrip) Beginner With a few more twists and turns than the Kettle Valley Railway, the Rotary Nature Trails is a fun place to ride with kids and anyone who is new to trail riding. The trail follows the Coquihalla River, so it is a good place to see salmon spawning. It also connects to the Town Bike Route. Thacker Regional Park Distance: 1 km (roundtrip) Beginner Thacker Regional Park is an old stretch of railway bed, so it is flat and suitable for families. The trail follows the marsh and is a good place to see a variety of wildlife. Riders can connect with the Kettle Valley Railway at the end of the Thacker Regional Park to make a longer ride. MOUNTAIN BIKING Hope Bike Park Beginner-advanced The skills park is the newest addition to the mountain biking scene in Hope. Opened in 2015, the park allows riders of all skill

adventure & adrenaline

levels to practice their skills for the more advanced trails in the mountains. Elements include pump tracks, a wall ride, and dir t jumps. For more information on the bike park, see page 30. Mt. Hope Lookout Distance: 3 km (roundtrip) Advanced The mountain bike trails on Mount Hope star t just below the hikers’ trail-head and at points crosses the hiking trail. The advanced trail has some man-made features and follows the Joan Greenwood Loop. HBC 1848 Heritage Trail Distance: 12 km (return) Intermediate The HBC Trail from Peers Creek is open for mountain biking to the first campground (below Manson’s Ridge). The trail is mostly double-track. There is a shor t stretch of rock-slide near the beginning of the trail (25 metre) that riders may have to hike past. BMX Hope Skateboard Park The skateboard park continues to be a popular spot for BMXers. Located behind the Hope Recreation Complex, it is close to the Bike Park. An expansion is being planned for the park, so veteran riders will have new features in the coming years. Hope Visitor Guide 2017

HOPE BIKE PARK Part of the Coquihalla Community Park project, the Hope Bike Park is the perfect place for riders to learn new skills before hitting the trails in the mountains. Set in the forest adjacent to the Fort Hope Trail and behind the Sports Bowl on Kawkawa Lake Road, the bike park boasts pump tracks, dirt jumps and other features for beginner, intermediate and advanced riders. Logzilla, a 91-metre-long log ride, awaits those who dare! Not ready to ride the skinnies yet? Have no fear: a beginner loop around the park and along Fort Hope Trail will introduce you to light trail riding. We’re confident you’ll be hooked! Picnic tables and seating areas allow parents and non-riders to watch the action. Fort Hope Trail is stroller and wheelchair accessible and helps connect downtown with Thacker Regional Park.

WHITEWATER RAFTING & PADDLING

COQUIHALLA RIVER Photo by: Wayne Desjardins

The story of British Columbia cannot be told without the story of its rivers. And the story of your trip should not be told without the story of a river. Hope, Cascades & Canyons has some of the best rafting and paddling in the province. For white-water kayakers with experience and their own gear, adventure awaits on the Coquihalla River, Skagit River, and Silver Creek. Depending on snow pack and river levels, commercial rafting in the area typically starts in early June on the Coquihalla and Nahatlatch rivers. Like the season in which they are run, these rivers are fast and fun. Rafting on the Coquihalla and the Nahatlatch typically ends July 1.

Motel of choice for a good night stay

A paddle or power trip down the Thompson River is the adventure you have been waiting for. Hot sun, pristine swimming holes, and roller-coaster-sized waves characterize a day-trip on the Thompson. For those wanting a chance to paddle through history, power trips down the mighty Fraser River run all summer. The Fraser is designated by the Canadian Heritage River System as a Canadian Heritage River and is one of the longest in Canada (1,375 km). The best time to run the Fraser is late July to early September. Year-round rafting is offered on the Chilliwack River. Family-run rafting companies with experienced guides are here to help visitors of all skill and comfort levels find a suitable trip.

HBC (1849) HERITAGE TRAIL

“Learn some history through the soles of your feet” -Harley Hatfield.”

HBC HERITAGE TRAIL Photo by: Hope Mountain Centre

In 2016, the 74 kilometre Hudson’s Bay Company (HBC)1849 Heritage Trail joined the ranks of the West Coast Trail, Juan de Fuca and Stein Valley as epic, multi-day, bucket-list hikes in British Columbia. The trail was the Hudson’s Bay Company’s first overland route connecting B.C.’s coast and interior. Prior to HBC use, First Nations had been traversing the Tulameen Plateau for centuries. The HBC Trail crosses rugged wilderness and hikers should have previous experience with mountain travel. Some trail-specific information to keep in mind: • Very few bridges exist on the trail, so be prepared to wade across streams and rivers • July to September is the best time to hike the trail • Water purification system (tablets and/or pump) is recommended The HBC Trail can be hiked over several days or in a series of day trips. Trail distances (traveling east: Hope to Tulameen). Access points: Peers Creek, Sowaqua Creek, and Jacobson Lake. Camps have bear caches, pit toilets, and water sources.

BEAR AWARE

TIKWALUS TRAIL Photo by: AdvantageHOPE

The Hope Mountain Black Bear Committee is a local volunteer organization that works to keep our bears wild. Remember that a fed bear is a dead bear, so keep your campsites free of garbage and pack out whatever you packed in. To avoid bear encounters: • Hike in groups • Make noise on the trail • Keep dogs on a leash If you encounter a bear • Stay calm and do not run • Back away slowly • Talk to the bear in a calm voice • Avoid eye contact

SPAWNING SALMON

TOP 3 PLACES TO SEE SPAWNING 1. Sucker’s Creek 2. Rotary Trails 3. Othello Tunnels

Salmon spend their early life in rivers and streams before migrating to the Pacific Ocean. Adult salmon later return to the same area where they hatched, guided largely by smell, to spawn and die. Seeing thousands of fish fight their way up-river is a truly incredible experience. Though the exact dates vary considerably, the major salmon run typically starts in Hope in October. Late September: Chum Late October: Coho June, July, and August: Steelhead October: Kokanee Interpretive signs at Thacker Regional Park (Sucker’s Creek) explore the unique challenges facing salmon in our rivers and streams. The first bridge in Coquihalla Canyon Provincial Park is the best place to see the summer Steelhead run.

FISHING Hope, Cascades & Canyons is world-renowned for its salmon and sturgeon fishing. But there are more species in our rivers and lakes than those iconic fish.

Fraser River sturgeon fishing is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. Book a guided trip on the Fraser between April and October to have a chance to battle the largest freshwater fish in the world.

There is no question when the salmon run opens in Hope: anglers from all over converge on the region when the sockeye, spring, and pink are running. Public access points on the Fraser River include:

AERIAL VIEW Whether from land or sky, the views around Hope are unbeatable. Hope offers some of the best conditions for gliding in the province. When westerly winds from the Fraser Valley hit the local mountains they create strong upward columns of air that can keep gliders in flight for hours. From April to October, visitors can catch a glimpse of the gliders soaring by the mountains over town. The Vancouver Soaring Association, which is based out of the Fraser Valley Regional District’s Regional Airpark in Hope, offers introductory flights and training courses. Check them out at vancouversoaring.com. For visitors who prefer an engine, Valley Helicopters offers incredible tours. OTHELLO TUNNELS

COQUIHALLA CANYON PROVINCIAL PARK: Open dawn-dusk, year-round Hope-Nicola Valley Trail: Open year-round Othello Tunnels: Open May-October (weather dependent) Peak Hours (July/August): Weekends from 11 a.m. – 2 p.m.

Designed by Andrew McCulloch, the Othello Quintette Tunnels were built through solid granite between 1911 and 1916 to complete the Kettle Valley Railway. The Othello Tunnels in Coquihalla Canyon Provincial Park are a must-see when visiting Hope. Coquihalla Canyon Provincial Park (and the Hope-Nicola Valley Trail) are open year-round; however, the Othello Tunnels are closed during the winter as a safety precaution. While visitors cannot walk through the tunnels in the winter, the short walk from the parking lot to the mouth of the first tunnel is well worth the stop. In the summer, visitors can walk the length of the tunnels and loop back over the Hope-Nicola Valley Trail. Flashlights are recommended for those with mobility issues (or anyone

who is scared of the dark). The ground can be uneven in the tunnels due to erosion caused by dripping water. The park has picnic areas, benches, and pit toilets. The tunnel trail is wheelchair and stroller accessible, as well as dog friendly (on-leash only). Othello Tunnels Fun Facts: • McCulloch – a fan of Shakespeare – named the stations along the Coquihalla Subdivision after the Bard’s characters • Though called the Quintette Tunnels, there are only 4 tunnels in the Coquihalla Canyon. Can you spot the ‘window’ that makes one tunnel feel like two? For more information on park closures, contact the Hope Visitor Centre or BC Parks.

AUG. 11-13, 2017 The Fat Dog 120 Trail Race through Skagit Valley and the E.C. Manning Provincial Park is considered the most scenic ultra race in Canada. Racers gain 8,673 metres in elevation, which is only 175.3 m less than Everest!

SKAGIT VALLEY

SILVER LAKE Photo by: AdvantageHOPE

Skagit Valley Provincial Park was born when Seattle City Lights, an electric public utility company supplying power to Seattle, attempted to raise the Ross Dam and flood the Skagit Valley. A herculean international effort followed as loggers (led by Curly Chittenden), environmentalists, and outdoor enthusiasts opposed the project and lobbied government to preserve this pristine region of British Columbia. For more information on the history of the park, check out the Gateway to the Skagit kiosk on Silver Skagit Road. Silver Lake Provincial Park and Ross Lake are the most popular recreational areas in the Skagit Valley. Ross Lake is a reservoir and water levels fluctuate throughout the year, but it is typically at full pool by July 1. At low-water, there is no water on the Canadian side. Visitors to Ross Lake should remember their passports, as Ross Lake straddles the Canada/USA border. In the spirit of the park’s inception, Friends of the Skagit was created in 2014 to educate visitors on the impact visitors can have on the park. They also support a long-standing garbage removal initiative.

Garbage cans throughout the Skagit Valley are emptied by a single volunteer. Friends of the Skagit supports that initiative by handing out garbage bags to users on weekends and reminding them to pack out what they pack in. Skagit Valley is one of the most popular camping destinations in the area. Four campgrounds (Silver Lake, Silver Tip, Whitworth Horse Camp and Ross Lake) offer basic amenities (well-water only and no hook-ups). Whitworth Horse Camp also offers corrals and hitching rails. Campers at Ross Lake require a reservation. In addition to camping, the park boasts amazing swimming, paddling, hiking, and wildlife viewing. Visitors looking for a multi-day hike or epic trail run should check out the Skyline II and Skagit River trails. See Trails of Hope or the map on page 34 for directions.

FILMING BACKDROP

Thirty-six years ago (1981) Sylvester Stallone and his film crew took over Hope to film Rambo: First Blood. Join us on Oct. 7, 2017 for a celebration of the 35th anniversary of the debut of the cult classic and the birth of ‘Hollywood North.’

Our diverse history has also made Hope a popular location for documentary filming. In 2009, local filmmaker Eva Wunderman chronicled the 1858 conflict between First Nations and European gold seekers in Canyon War.

Since then, more than 15 feature films (including Shoot to Kill, Hope Springs, The Stickup, Far from Home: The Adventures of Yellow Dog, and War for the Planet of the Apes) have been filmed in the area. Most recently, the crew of Sweet Virginia was in Hope to film the majority of that production in the summer of 2016.

Our rugged terrain is perhaps best highlighted in the Discovery Channel show Highway Thru Hell. The series follows Jamie Davis’ crew as they work to keep local highways open for truckers during unpredictable winter weather.

RAMBO SITE TOUR In 2017, First Blood will be celebrating its 35th anniversary. The map on the facing page highlights some of the most iconic filming locations. Below is a description of the scenes. 1. Sheriff Teasle picks up Rambo on Water Avenue, near Gardner GM. 2. Trying to escape police, Rambo – on a stolen motorcycle – jumps the train tracks at Third Avenue. 3. With the police in hot pursuit, Rambo rides along Hudson Bay Street, passing the H-tree at the corner of Fifth Avenue and Hudson Bay Street. 4. The sheriff ’s station is located in front of District Hall, at the corner of Wallace Street and Third Avenue. It has since been moved (see #8). 5. The current location of Treehouse Health Foods was transformed into Mountain State Savings. Across Third Avenue from the bank, a Coke billboard was placed on the building’s roof to provide cover for the cameras.

8. The new location of the sheriff ’s station. It now serves as the Canyon Golden Age Society’s clubhouse at 560 Douglas St. 9. The intersection near exit 170 (Highway 1) is where Rambo walked under Hope’s original “Welcome to Hope: Gateway to Holidayland” archway. Remnants of the archway can be seen at the Hope Station House and Coquihalla Campground. 10. Location of the gas station that Rambo blew up as a diversion. The station was built specifically to be destroyed. 11. The sheriff drops Rambo on the bridge to Portland. Ore. at the beginning of the movie. The original bridge was taken down in 2011. 12. Othello Tunnels – known in the movie as “Chapman’s Gorge” – is where Rambo hangs precariously on the rock wall (between tunnels one and two) and the police officer falls out of the helicopter. *Note: the Othello Tunnels are open from the May long weekend until the end of October.*

6. Rambo rides his stolen motorcycle along the sidewalk on the north side of Wallace Street (between Third and Fraser avenues).

13. When evading capture on the stolen motorcycle, Rambo passes through the Chevron parking lot. The distinctive roofline of what is now Hope Pizza Place can be seen in the background of the scene.

7. The Outpost gun shop was built at the intersection of Commission Street and Third Avenue. It was built specifically to be destroyed during filming.

14. In the movie, Station House was still at the corner of Hudson Bay Street and Fifth Avenue (see #3). The building was moved in 1985.

BRIGADE DAYS

DEMO DERBY Photo by: XY Zeng

In 1967, a local service station owner named Ken James decided that Hope deserved to celebrate the end of another successful summer season. Named in honour of our fur trading history, Hope Brigade Days and its mascot, Briggie Pete, have signalled the end of summer for the community ever since. Today, Brigade Days is one of the most popular weekends of the year. Residents and visitors alike flock to Sixth Avenue for a line-up of events that include:

• Parade

• Briggie X (more information on page 59) • Boondock Bike Jam • Ball hockey and two-pitch tournaments • The Hope Hustle • Brigade Trail Race (more information on page 14) Brigade Days takes place the weekend after Labour Day (Sept. 8-10, 2017).

• Demolition derby

Wristbands provide access to the weekend’s events and are available at participating retailers.

• Outdoor concerts

GOLD PANNING The 1858 gold rush forever changed the lives of the First Nations and Europeans who called the Fraser Canyon home. Today, visitors can relive a part of history by gold panning on the banks of the Fraser River using much of the same equipment that they used in the 1800s. Public Panning Reserves Hope – from the confluence of the Fraser and Coquihalla rivers to the Fraser River bridge (the bridge that crosses the Fraser River on the Trans-Canada Highway north of downtown Hope) Yale – at the bottom of Albert Street, visitors can also experience the life of a gold panner at Yukon Dan’s annual Fraser River Gold Panning Championships (Aug. 17-20, 2017). The competition – which attracts panners from around the world – takes place at Anderson Creek Campground in Boston Bar. Yale Historic Site and Hell’s Gate Airtram also offer on-site panning.

CHRIST CHURCH

DID YOU KNOW... Hope has 6,181 people and at least a dozen churches!

Christ Church National Historic Site has housed a congregation since its consecration in 1861. This makes it the longest operating church on mainland British Columbia. The Anglican parish was established in Hope in 1859 by the Rev. Alexander Pringle. When construction of the church began in 1861, it was designed by the Royal Engineers to create a stronger British presence in Fort Hope. The Fraser River Gold Rush had brought an influx of American gold seekers to the community and British colonists were eager to maintain supremacy. With its dark wood interior and leaded glass windows, Christ Church is an excellent example of an Anglican parish church in the Gothic Revival style. Interpretive signage on the exterior allows visitors to explore the building’s history during the off-season. Guided tours are available during the summer months. The grounds offer a classical labyrinth, old-growth trees, and a peaceful garden.

HOPE SLIDE

HOPE SLIDE Photo by: AdvantageHOPE

The Hope Slide was one of the largest recorded landslides in Canadian history. In the early hours of January 9, 1965 – a mere 16 years after it opened – Highway 3 was abruptly closed when a slab of rock fractured away from the face on Johnson Peak, resulting in the Hope Slide. The force of the slide was such that the debris travelled 60 metres up Mt. Coulter (on the opposite side of the valley) before settling over the Hope-Princeton Highway. The resultant debris was 85 metres deep and 3 kilometres wide. The debris that slid from the mountain was enough to obliterate Beaver (Outram) Lake from the topography of the valley. The impact of the

slide set off seismographic readings at a monitoring station in Penticton, which led to the belief that the slide was caused by an earthquake. However, geologists today note that the Hope slide was caused by weak layers of rock covered in heavy snow simply giving way to gravity. Four people were killed in the slide. Visitors travelling along Highway 3 are driving 55 metres above the original highway surface. At the Hope Slide viewpoint, visitors can see the scars that were left on Johnson Peak by the slide. SUNSHINE VALLEY Today Sunshine Valley is a pleasant mountain community that is home to full-time and seasonal outdoor enthusiasts. Its shallow lake offers paddling in the summer and skating in the winter. Hundreds of kilometres of snowshoe, ATV, snowmobile, hiking, and biking trails wind their way through the forests of the Sumallo and Nicolum River valleys. From its roots as a traditional First Nations hunting and berry picking area to its time as a home for wayward boys in the 1950s, Sunshine Valley has had a history worth exploring. In 1942, the Canadian government created a coastal exclusion zone and Japanese-Canadians living within that zone were interned in camps across the country. Between 1942 and 1946, approximately 2,600 people were interned at Sunshine Valley, then called Tashme. The name Tashme is derived from the last names of the men responsible for the camp: Taylor, Shirras, and Mead. Many of the interned men worked at a sawmill in the camp or on construction crews that helped build the Hope-Princeton Highway (Highway 3 was completed in 1949). 2017 marks the 75th anniversary of Japanese-Canadian internment. Today, a number of buildings from that era still exist. More information on the camp can be found at the Sunshine Valley Tashme Museum.

TIKWALUS HERITAGE TRAIL

The trails in Hope, Cascades & Canyons are unparalleled in their diversity, majesty, and history. Tikwalus Heritage Trail (35 minutes north of Hope along Highway 1) is a portion of the original Nlaka’pamux First Nation trail that connected the village of Kequeloose (Alexandra Lodge) to Nicola Lake (Merritt), Kamloops, Boston Bar, and Lytton. Today, the trail ends at a backcountry camp at Lake Mountain, complete with bear cache, picnic table, pit-toilet, and water source. In addition to allowing the Nlaka’pamux (and later HBC Fur Brigades and gold seekers) to bypass the more treacherous route through Hell’s Gate and Black Canyon, Tikwalus was an important area for resourcegathering. Culturally Modified Trees (CMTs) are visible along the trail and provide evidence of the ways in which Red Cedar bark was harvested by Aboriginal users. In 1847, Hudson’s Bay Company chief trader A.C. Anderson was looking for a route to the interior. Nlaka’pamux Chief Pahallok led him over the Tikwalus Trail to Fort Kamloops and was later hired to improve the trail for horses. E.C. Manning Provincial Park - home of Manning Park Resort - is a four-season playground. The western edge of the park is 20 minutes from downtown, while the resort is a 45 minute drive from Hope (along Highway 3). Manning Park Resort’s year-round hotel (with cabins and chalets) complements the four summer-only campgrounds and makes Manning Park truly a place for everyone.

Summer During the summer months, Manning Park is home to some of the best hiking, camping, and swimming in the area.

Lightning Lakes Chain This chain (Lightning, Strike, Flash, and Thunder Lakes) is one of the most popular spots in Manning Park. At the Lightning Lake Day-Use Area, visitors can rent canoes, kayaks, and stand-up paddleboards. Fishing on the shores of Lightning Lake is a popular family afternoon activity.

Explore the history of the most profitable community of the 1858 Fraser River Gold Rush and camp along the banks of the river where 25,000 men bound for the gold fields passed through in 1858-1859. Pre-1858: Emory Creek was integral to the families who made their living hunting, fishing, mining, and trading 1858: Edward Hill’s prospecting party finds considerable gold at Hemhemetheqw (later renamed Hill’s Bar) and the Fraser River Gold Rush starts in earnest. Five hundred men wintered at Emory Creek that year. 1879: Canadian Pacific Railway (CPR) chooses Emory City as its western terminus. The city grows to 13 streets, 32 blocks, and 4000 homes and businesses. 1880: The Inland Sentinel is established in Emory City as the first newspaper on the mainland. Emory City sawmill produced 21 000 feet of timber in a 24 hour shift. 1881: CPR abandons Emory City in favour of Yale (5 kilometres north). 1890: Little trace of the once bustling city remains 1930: Dominion Provincial Mining Training Project establishes a camp at Emory Creek to train unemployed men in mining methods 2017: The remains of Emory City’s glory days include: the Hope River General Store, two campgrounds, a small exhibit about local First Nations and Chinese miners, and a portion of the historic Cariboo Wagon Road.

FUN FACT Old Yale Road was once part of the original wagon road that ran from New Westminster to Yale.

The small town of Yale – established by the Hudson’s Bay Company in 1848 – was once the largest city north of San Francisco and west of Chicago. Yale grew to an estimated 30,000 people during the 1858 gold rush. With the construction of the Cariboo Wagon Road in the 1860s, Yale became the terminus for one of the largest sternwheeler routes in North America and bustled with the building of the Canadian Pacific Railway in the 1880s. Today, the booming gold rush town has given way to a beautiful village on the banks of the mighty Fraser River. Yale Historic Site is home to a number of original buildings and is well worth the stop. Creighton House – an original home built in the 1870s – houses the museum’s collection. On the grounds, visitors can explore the Living History Tent City. Life from the 1860s comes alive in the general store, jail, saloon, Chinese Boarding house, gold commissioner’s

tent, medical tent, and blacksmith shop. Built in 1863, St. John the Divine is one of the oldest surviving churches in BC. Regular services are no longer held here, but it is available for weddings, special events, and daily tours. It is home to ‘Enduring Threads,’ a collection of textiles hand-stitched by the students of All Hallows Girls School (1884-1920). The historic Ward Tea House is open June to September. You can also try your hand at gold panning, either on-site or on the banks of the Fraser River. Guided and self-guided walking tours of old town sites and the Pioneer Cemetery are available. HELL’S GATE HELL’S GATE AIRTRAM Photo by: Fraser River Raft Expeditions

A trip through the Fraser Canyon would not be complete without a stop at Hell’s Gate. In 1808, explorer Simon Fraser described this section of the river as a place “where no human being should ever venture, for surely we have encountered the gates of hell.” Aboriginal guides led Fraser and his crew over rope ladders strung from the cliffs above the turbulent river. Known primarily for its breathtaking gondola ride, Hell’s Gate is a fun, interactive, and educational stop for the whole family. Each year, millions of salmon battle insurmountable odds on their upriver journey to spawn and die at their various spawning grounds. One of those overwhelming odds is Hell’s Gate. Blasting during the construction of the Canadian National Railway in 1913 resulted in a landslide that wiped out millions of salmon and seemed to permanently block their upriver path. In 1937, Canada and the U.S worked together to create the International Fishways. The fishways are a series of ladders which allow salmon to navigate the rapids at Hell’s Gate. The Fraser River’s entire flow of water from its 135,185 square

kilometre watershed rushes through the narrow gorge at 757 million litres per minute. At 40 kilometres per hour, water twice the volume of Niagara Falls roars through during spring run-off in May/June. At Hell’s Gate, Highway 1 passes 244 metres above the Fraser River and it is here where your family’s adventure begins as you board the airtram. The lower terminal features an educational exhibit showcasing Simon Fraser, the Fraser River Gold Rush, and the life cycle of the salmon. There is also gold panning, observation decks, and a suspension bridge. Simon’s Cafe offers homemade salmon chowder, while the Fudge Factory serves up ice-cream in fudge-dipped waffle cones and 30 different flavours of fudge made on site. Gifts, souvenirs, and a great selection of BC history books can be found in the Gold Panner Gift Shop. In addition to all that you expect to experience at Hell’s Gate, there is a belief that the property is haunted. Information about these friendly spirits can be viewed throughout the site. Hell’s Gate Airtram is a 40 minute drive northeast of Hope (Highway 1). Parking is free and pets are permitted. The attraction is open daily April 12 – Oct. 9, 2017.

FRASER CANYON The Fraser Canyon Highway is a scenic route rich in human history. First Nations traversed the canyon walls using ropes, ladders, and bridges. They built a trail network that connected their villages, enabling trade, hunting, and resource gathering. The Tikwalus Trail (north of Spuzzum) is a First Nations trail that provides spectacular views of the canyon (more info on page 45).

upgrade the mule trail to a proper wagon road.

Transportation networks – trails, roads, and railways – have long signalled the success of communities in the canyon. From the earliest villages to the communities today, travel through the canyon has connected residents physically and spiritually. The route through the Fraser Canyon is meant to be savoured.

The crowning touch of the Cariboo Wagon Road was Alexandra Bridge. The original bridge is now part of Alexandra Bridge Provincial Park (south of Hell’s Gate) and is a 15 minute walk from the main parking lot.

Transportation in the canyon accelerated with the discovery of gold in 1858. The traditional ladders on the granite cliffs were no longer suitable for the massive influx of people. Mule trails were built through the canyon to allow for overland travel of miners and suppliers. A section of the original mule trail is visible near the southern entrance to Hell’s Gate Tunnel. www.nestle-waters.ca

Completed in 1863, the Cariboo Wagon Road was built by hand and linked the 600 kilometres between Fort Yale and Barkerville. At a pullout south of the Yale Tunnel, a section of the Cariboo Wagon Road is still visible. Also from this spot is an excellent view of Lady Franklin Rock.

Travel through the canyon changed immeasurably when the Canadian Pacific Railway was completed in 1885. The Canadian National Railway (on the opposite bank of the Fraser) was completed in 1915. The first automobile road came in 1926, but the modern highway wasn’t completed until the early 1960s. The highway today passes through seven tunnels that were blasted through the sheer rock face by road engineers in the late 1950s. These tunnels range in length from 57 to 610 metres (11th longest tunnel in Canada).

The Fraser River Gold Rush of 1858 and the Canyon War were instrumental in the foundation of British Columbia as a colony. Nlaka’pamux First Nations had been pulling gold out of the river for nearly a decade prior to the European ‘discovery’ of gold. At the time, access to gold (along with furs and salmon), superior knowledge of the land, and a higher population led to the Nlaka’pamux holding significant political power in the Fraser Canyon.

In the early 1850s, the Hudson’s Bay Company and territorial leaders wanted to keep the existence of gold a secret in order to stop American miners from flooding the region. When word eventually spread in 1858 that First Nations were trading in gold, miners from the United States started to venture north. Localized disputes regarding disruption of the salmon run and violence perpetrated by miners against First Nations nearly led to an all-out war on the banks of the Fraser River in 1858. The Canyon War was characterized by violent skirmishes between the Nlaka’pamux and the Miner’s Militia. In late summer, Nlaka’pamux Chief David Spintlum negotiated peace between the parties and stopped the war from escalating further. As a result of the Canyon War, British authorities acted quickly in establishing a company of soldiers in the region and lobbying London for full colony status.

BOSTON BAR & NORTH BEND In the heart of the Fraser Canyon (50 minutes north of Hope) lie the twin communities of Boston Bar and North Bend. The original settlement on the west side of the river was a Nlaka’pamux village called Koiaum. In what has become a familiar story in the canyon, the Fraser River Gold Rush changed the people and place forever. American miners chasing the mother lode settled in the area and renamed the village Boston Bar in the 1860s. When the Canadian Pacific Railway was completed in 1885 Boston Bar moved to the east side of the river and the western town was renamed North Bend. From 1940-1986, an aerial ferry connected the two communities. When the ferry was replaced with the Cog Harrington Bridge, it was moved to Francis Harrington Park in downtown Boston Bar. Visitors can now explore the history of the aerial ferry and the two communities it served through a series of interpretive signs. The Heritage Room at the Old North Bend Primary School has a number of exhibits about the history of Boston Bar and North Bend. This facility is operated by volunteers.

Tuckkwiowhum (Tuck-we-ohm) Village – adjacent to Anderson Creek Campground – offers visitors an opportunity to experience a traditional Nlaka’pamux village. • Guided tours • Self-guided tours • Museum and gift shop • Cultural classes and events • Teepee camping

NAHATLATCH VALLEY

Boston Bar-North Bend is the gateway to adventure in the Nahatlatch Valley. Waterfalls, pristine lakes, lush forests, and a wild river are waiting for you in the heart of the Nahatlatch. One of the main attractions in the Nahatlatch Valley is its world-class whitewater. Rafters and kayakers come from all over the globe to paddle its near-continuous Class III-V rapids, which are among the most exciting and challenging in western Canada. There are 37 rapids in the 14 kilometres from Francis Lake to the Fraser River. The river is commercially rafted in the early summer. Camping along the upper Nahatlatch River in Nahatlatch Provincial Park is a true BC experience. There are no hook-ups in the park. There are three lakes in the Nahatlatch Valley that offer boating, fishing, and relaxation. • Frances Lake (25 kilometres) is the first of the jade-green lakes • Hannah Lake (26 kilometres) • Nahatlatch Lake (29km) is the largest of the three lakes NAHATLATCH LAKE Photo by: Nate Brown
