ZELLSTOFF CELGAR
If you’re new to the Kootenays, or are just visiting Castlegar you’ve likely picked up on the relaxed, easy going, outdoor recreation-loving vibe that is part of our community. But you might not know… that just minutes outside of town there is a long-standing, fast-paced industry leader working hard around the clock ‘24-7’, to provide two products essential to human needs; Pulp and Power. The pulp produced at Celgar is recognized as some of the best in the world and our customers; paper, tissue, toweling and hygiene product manufacturers all over the globe depend on it to add strength to their products. The power we generate fully supplies our own needs and also allows us to export enough Eco-certified Green Energy to the local power grid to supply approximately 20,000 homes. Celgar was British Columbia’s first interior pulp mill, and 56 years later we are one of the largest and most modern Kraft pulp mills in North America today. We use the best available technology for our environmental control devices and treatment facilities which puts us amongst the Canadian pulp industry best for environmental
performance. We are also at the forefront in optimizing full use of our valuable forests by utilizing smaller wood that would have previously been left on the forest floor or slash burned. As the largest employer in the area and the main economic driver of Castlegar, community involvement is very important to us. Our company and our employees contribute regularly to causes within the community including non-profit associations, charities, sports, annual scholarships and community events and projects. We are especially proud of our contributions to Castlegar’s tourist hot-spot; the Millennium Park. The Celgar Pavilion, Celgar Drive In… Drop In launching ramp at the bike skills park and the outdoor exercise equipment located there were all sponsored by Zellstoff Celgar. We also support Communities in Bloom and Sculpturewalk throughout Castlegar.
Working together to be the best for our communities, our environment… our future! PublicRelations@Celgar.com 250.365.7211 4 | CASTLEGAR 2017 VACATION GUIDE

It all starts here…. Welcome to Castlegar, your centre of adventure. This central community in the West Kootenays offers an abundance of culture and outdoor recreational lifestyle options. An attractive community located at the confluence of the Columbia and Kootenay rivers is where my journey begins. My name is Troy Pyett, proud co-owner of the Lions Head Smoke & Brew Pub. Our story begins when I moved to Castlegar to start work with the Ministry of Natural Resources working on an initial attack forest fire fighting crew. After the busy summer, if I wasn’t out skiing in the amazing mountains in the West Kootenays, I would travel to Thailand to go rock climbing where I met my partner Carly Hadfield. Carly moved to Castlegar to continue our relationship and being the daughter of craft beer pioneer Paul Hadfield of Spinnakers Gastro Brewpub in Victoria, we were inspired to bring a craft beer taphouse to the Kootenays. The business opportunity appeared in June of 2009 and we purchased the Lion’s Head Pub and began the journey. The journey, like any, has had many challenges, but with the amazing community support we have had the ability to overcome and thrive to become a destination pub. We appeared in Joe Wiebe’s thirsty writers book Craft Beer Revolution, the insider’s guide to BC Craft Breweries, as an “oasis of craft beer” in 2013. In 2016, acclaimed writer John Lee included the Lion’s Head in British Columbia magazine as one of the top ten pubs in B.C. The future of our journey is to become the first brew pub in the West Kootenays. We have no doubt that being in this vibrant, supportive, and growing community we will achieve this goal. We look forward to you enjoying Castlegar and all the opportunities in the area. Cheers and Welcome!

A unique cultural destination Welcome to Castlegar, the halfway point between Calgary and Vancouver, and home to the West Kootenay Regional Airport, making it an ideal starting point to unwind and explore. Biking, hiking, camping, golfing, boating, skiing, snowmobiling and world-class fly-fishing are all accompanied by a diverse arts-and-culture scene, outdoor festivals and markets. A rich Russian Doukhobor heritage has influenced Castlegar’s deep agricultural and industrious roots. With so much to explore, you’ll soon understand why Castlegar is a must-see! Several thousands of years ago, the Lakes Salish people first fished and built their winter pit houses in the area. Over 200 years ago in 1811, David Thompson canoed down the Columbia River, and over 100 years ago, between 1908 and 1913, Canada’s largest internal migration took place when the Doukhobor migrants moved from the Prairies to the West Kootenay area.
They arrived at the confluence of the Kootenay and Columbia Rivers, a historic transportation area, bringing their peaceful, agricultural lifestyle. By 1913, 5,000 Doukhobors had arrived, developing basic agriculture, orchards, lumber mills, irrigation projects, roads, bridges, apiaries and the construction of over 90 communal villages. Castlegar’s spacious, beautiful valley became a new place of refuge and was named “Dolina Ootishenie,” the “Valley of Consolation,” by Peter V. Verigin, the Doukhobors’ leader. The legacy of the Doukhobors has informed Castlegar’s unique culture. Today, an active Doukhobor community holds Russian language classes, maintains publications and Internet sites, organizes Sunday prayer meetings, youth activities, festivals, talent shows, fundraisers for worthy causes, and is active in peace groups and other benevolent endeavours. With such a rich history, Castlegar is a community that cares about living better, not just more. CASTLEGAR 2017 VACATION GUIDE | 7
Highlights Located in a scenic landscape and inspired by a distinctive culture, Castlegar’s down-toearth feel has fostered an active arts-and-culture community that hosts an abundance of appealing attractions that will educate and entertain you. Come learn about the area’s early settlers, enjoy local works of art, and take in one of the many festivals and fairs. Not sure where to start? Here is a list of possibilities to inspire you!
City of Castlegar
Zuckerberg Island
Take a walk around Zuckerberg Island and discover the unique Columbia River Valley history. You will be transported back several thousand years when the Lakes Salish Indian people first fished and built their winter pit houses here. Almost 200 years ago, in 1811, David Thompson canoed down the Columbia River past the island, and 60 years ago, Alexander Zuckerberg built his unique Russian Orthodox Chapel House. With over eight hectares of woods, a variety of paths to explore and many picnic tables and benches for lunching and relaxing, the island is connected to the mainland by a 473-foot suspension bridge. 8 | CASTLEGAR 2017 VACATION GUIDE
Highlights
Brilliant Suspension Bridge At 15 metres high and 100 metres long, the Brilliant Suspension Bridge majestically spans the Kootenay River just downstream from the Brilliant Dam and is part of the Trans Canada Trail. The Brilliant Suspension Bridge, built in 1913, connected the Doukhobor villages with their agricultural land and was used for about 50 years. Public outcry saved the historic bridge from demolition in the 1970s, and in 1995, it was declared a National Historic Site after years of community perseverance. In May 2010, after it was restored, the bridge was opened to foot traffic and stands as a proud testament of Doukhobor craftsmanship.
Kootenay Gallery of Art With a colourfully painted floral exterior, the Kootenay Gallery invites you to explore a diverse collection of exhibits and gift shop. The grounds are gorgeous too, with a working sundial, butterfly and xeriscape gardens and a habitat restoration project overlooking the Columbia River. Featuring works by local and international artists, this gallery is a treasure well worth discovering.
Canadian Pacific Railway Station Museum One of the best-preserved stations in the province, the Canadian Pacific Railway Station (CPR) Museum is housed in a building over a century old. Once inside, you can envision the hustle and bustle of the passengers who used to board the trains between Castlegar and Nelson. Now this remarkable museum displays antique treasures, local memorabilia and an authentic caboose, and the station agent’s residence on the upper floor is a wonderful example of the early 1900s. It also houses Castlegar’s news archives, a delightful gift shop and has beautifully maintained grounds.

Over 1,000 artifacts showcase the culture’s pioneering spirit, fascinating arts and crafts, customs and religion. Stroll the spacious grounds where a statue of Leo Tolstoy, a Doukhobor sympathizer and benefactor, gazes down upon you. The audio-visual room has an exceptional photo and documentary archive and the gallery for books, music, film and souvenir items.

Millennium Park
The City of Castlegar’s Millennium Park is a 23 hectare green space built with the vision of it being a premier, regional destination park with a strong connection to the water. The park saw the opening of the natural swimming ponds in the summer of 2014. The recreational space consists of a series of three ponds adjacent to the Columbia River designed to bring residents and visitors to the river’s edge and provide a comfortable, fun swimming area. Created in early 2000, the paved 1.8 kilometre long Millennium Walkway follows the Columbia River past sandy beach, lookout points, gorgeous flower gardens and picnic tables. Interpretive signs explain the area’s ecosystems and history. The park already includes two full size soccer fields, and the GreenGym which is a Rotary project that includes 12 pieces of outdoor fitness equipment. Watch for more progress in the park as a set of sand volleyball courts and an off-lease pet area connected by the well-used Millennium Walkway are future enhancements to the park. The Castlegar business community and its Rotary clubs have also come together to provide an exciting new covered multi-use facility for the park which was completed in the summer of 2015. The Celgar Pavilion features an indoor kitchen, covered picnic table area with seating for 150 people, a concession stand and storage facilities for the soccer association. It is a gathering place sheltered from the elements while still enjoying the scenic park area for everyday family gatherings, special events and picnics.

Getting Here Castlegar is located within a region referred to as the “Kootenays,” which is located in the southeastern corner of the province of British Columbia in Canada, roughly halfway between the cities of Vancouver, British Columbia, and Calgary, Alberta, and three hours’ drive north of Spokane, Washington, USA. We are a half-day drive from British Columbia’s popular Okanagan region and a full-day drive to BC’s Pacific Northwest. The Kootenays are roughly the same size as Switzerland, and the mountainous area itself is encircled almost entirely by the Kootenay and Columbia Rivers. Ed Chernoff photo
Castlegar is well serviced by transport carriers and easy to get to by car, bus or air. For driving times and distances as well as general carriers and US border information, please call the Castlegar Visitor Information Centre at 250-365-6313. CASTLEGAR 2017 VACATION GUIDE | 27

Festivals and Fairs Winterfest:
The first weekend of December hits, and you feel like doing nothing but hibernating. That is, of course, until you realize that Castlegar’s Annual Winter Fest is going on. You put on your hat, mitts, jacket and boots, grab the kids, and head to downtown Castlegar in the gently falling snow. The parade is a delight for kids both on the floats and on the sidelines, and the festivities are capped off with the arrival of Santa Claus himself. The tree in Spirit Square is lit up and kids have the chance to sit on Santa’s knee and tell him what they want for Christmas.
24th Annual Pass Creek Fall Fair:
Whether young or old, there’s something for everyone at the Pass Creek Fall Fair. The fair features a dog agility show, baking, arts, crafts, woodwork, a wide variety of poultry, and of course, fruits and vegetables from local gardens. The Pass Creek Regional Exhibition Society hopes that the experiences offered at the fair will serve to educate the public and raise awareness about agriculture and rural lifestyles. The fun and slower pace of fall fairs is embedded in our memories, so be sure to bring the family out so you can provide your children with wonderful memories of their own. The fair runs September 23-24, 2017 at the Pass Creek Fall Fairgrounds.
Spring Fling:
Each April the Castlegar’s Spring Fling shuts down the streets of downtown for a one-day, family festival. Events that day include a very popular street hockey tournament and a show n’ shine for car enthusiasts. There are lots of carnival-style games for the kids and music fills the air with two stages of entertainment. Visit www.castlegarspringfling.ca for details on this year’s festivities.
Bluegrass Jamboree:
The Castlegar Bluegrass Jamboree is held on the idyllic Pass Creek Fairgrounds and runs the second week July each year and offers bluegrass lovers and players three days packed with nothing but sweet bluegrass music. The Jamboree is formatted so that musicians play three songs and then the next group takes the stage. This is repeated throughout the day and helps keep the musical landscape fresh. Proceeds from the event go toward the Pass Creek Fall Fair.
Castlegar Sunfest:
A popular family-oriented event held annually on the first weekend in June so mark June 2-3-4, 2017 on your calendar and get ready for fun. You will be treated to three fun-filled family activities including a parade, talent show, pancake breakfasts, music, food vendors, vintage cars, skateboarding, dances and the Miss Castlegar pageant, all topped off with a burst of fireworks.
Kootenay Festival: LET’S CELEBRATE!
A multi-faceted event encouraging the recognition and appreciation of our community diversity through entertainment, cuisine and interactive educational activities, displays and performance. The festival provides an opportunity to experience and celebrate the heritage, culture, ethnicity and artistic expression that enriches the Kootenay region and makes us proud to call it our home. The festival happens at Millenium Park and will be held on July 22, 2017. Admission is free! 30 | CASTLEGAR 2017 VACATION GUIDE
