Helping grow Business since 1893

The Mission Regional Chamber of Commerce has been working as the “Voice of Business” in the Mission area and a loyal advocate for members since 1893. Mission business owners’ unique needs can be met by the chamber’ s many resources and benefits, and the chamber’s ability to build member’s network at the many social events hosted by the chamber year round. When a business joins the chamber, it becomes part of Canada’s largest business network and helps build opportunities for the community. In fact, the Mission Chamber is the second oldest Chamber in B.C. and in 2018 will be celebrating its 125th birthday.

Along with assisting local businesses, the chamber’s job is building and maintaining relationships with all levels of government. This ensures the Mission Chamber advocacy efforts are heard and communication remains open and clear between members and government.

In addition to working with Missions business community the Mission Chamber also operates the Mission Visitor Information Center. Our friendly staff provide year-round services to tourists visiting the community. Our convenient location provides washroom facilities, picnic facilities, maps and guides for local and province wide destinations. Stop in and check out our retail products all sourced locally and Canadian made!

Ideally situated, Mission is just a 15-minute drive from the US border, and approximately 70 kilometres

estled on a southern coastal mountain slope, the District of Mission overlooks the lush valley of the mighty Fraser River.

The climate is warm in the summer and mild and wet in the winter. Flowers bloom most of the year, as the area is naturally hospitable to a wide variety of plant life and vegetation. If you are the outdoors type, then welcome to paradise. Fishermen will always find a challenge on the banks of the Fraser River (sturgeon, salmon) or the many nearby lakes (rainbow trout).

Miles of hiking and biking trails abound as well as 4x4ing and camping opportunities.

If you prefer a little culture and sophistication then the art gallery or theatre may be more to your taste. If you love to shop then check out the huge array of family-owned and franchise stores that call Mission home. Don’t forget to stroll downtown. So come, play, explore, experience and see for yourself why Mission is “the Jewel in the Valley.”

looking for an easy ride or mountain biking in the forest? Mission has trails for all levels of cyclists. • Bear Mountain is accessible from two areas, Saunders Loop (off of Richards St.) and Mill Pond (via

Backcountry Adventures

Dewdney Trunk Rd.). Both entrances have kiosks maps with barcodes for smartphones. If you park at Mill Pond there is a new climbing trail for both hikers and bikers alike called Big Trouble in Little Chainring (BTLC), this gets you to the top section of the mountain and a variety of additional trails. If you park at Saunders Loop you can access the mountain via a gravel road or climb any of the trails to the top. In total there are approximately 20 trails on the mountain. The majority of the trails on Bear Mountain are blues and blacks, the trails are very well built, drained, and maintained, and good in all weather conditions! • Red Mountain offers quintessential endurance trails like Crazy 8s and Mastodon that will keep you on your toes. Situated just across the road from Bear Mountain, off Dewdney Trunk Rd., Red Mountain has many diverse trail offerings. Those who frequent Red know that there are always new lines just waiting to be conquered. Superb single track, challenging techy climbs, and fall lines steep enough to scare your pants off – the trails on Red have it all! • Heritage Park has trails for any skill set and offer breath-taking forest and scenery to be enjoyed by everybody. The trails in-behind Heritage Park are all well marked, and have a wide variety of technicality – green to black diamond. If you are looking for natural corners with natural pumps, a trail that is so steep that you can barely walk down it, there is a trail for you. There are trails for any skill set with breath taking forest and scenery to be enjoyed by everybody. tourismMission.info t tourism Mission.info

Mission Bridge

he Mission Railway Bridge was originally constructed in 1891 for CP Rail and spans the Fraser River. At the time of its construction it was considered to be the longest wooden bridge in the world. The bridge would be the only western railway link to America at the time it was built and was only the second bridge to span the Fraser River. It was originally built on wooden pilings and remained the lowest downstream bridge for the first thirteen years. In 1903, the swing span was converted to steel. This change was followed by all spans being converted to steel in 1908 and 1910 and also all piers being

converted to concrete in 1908 and 1909. In 1927 the bridge was planked for vehicle traffic with one lane controlled by a traffic light with access from both sides. The bridge continued to be used in this way until July 7, 1973 when the modern Mission Bridge was opened for vehicle traffic and the planking was removed from the CPR bridge. The bridge is currently made of steel and is about 1,700 feet long. It is only used to carry rail traffic currently and has a 10 kilometer per hour speed restriction. The photo (above) shows the first train to cross the bridge.

n 1861 Father Fouquet, a young Oblate Priest from France, chose the site for St. Mary’s Indian Residential School beside a small creek entering the Fraser River just east of the present downtown core of Mission. Living quarters, a church, workshops, a barn and grist (grain) mill were built along the Fraser River. The advent of the Canadian Pacific Railway forced the Oblates to rebuild their school on the plateau above the original site. A railway station was opened in 1883 just below the new school. The arrival of the first train in 1885 caused great excitement. This new mode of transportation plus the opening of a bridge across the Fraser River (1891), connecting the east west line to destinations south, rapidly changed and expanded the settlement patterns. Small communities were forming in the outlying areas. Silverdale

was settled by mostly Italian settlers and Silverhill by Swedish.

James Welton Horne, a real estate broker saw a potential boom town ahead. He purchased a large tract of land surrounding the bridge and railway line. He had it cleared and surveyed into streets for a townsite. He built stores, offices, and a hotel for prospective buyers. On May 19, 1891, he held his “Great Land Sale” and 300 city lots were offered for sale as well as farm land.

The townsite which called itself Mission City and the region surrounding it grew overnight.

Corporation of the District of Mission

The Board of Trade (today Mission Regional Chamber of Commerce), established in 1893, played a large role in the development of the townsite into the commercial hub of the community. It was home to the first bank, hotel, theatre, newspaper office, retail stores and more. The CPR station was relocated in 1891 into the townsite and situated

dangerous for the farmers crossing with on the trains. The problem was resolved with the building of a new station in 1910 on the north side of the tracks. In December of 1922, the townsite incorporated as the Village of Mission and held its first elections in 1923. The area from the Stave River to Hatzic Lake was incorporated in 1892 as the with John McLean elected as the first Reeve.

arly settlers knew the value of an education. They donated land and helped build some of the first schools themselves. In

1886 a one-room public school opened on Second Avenue and Murray with an enrollment of 25 students. Other schools followed throughout the area. tourismMission.info

he first Protestant church was the Trinity Methodist and it opened in 1892 on James and 2nd Avenue. A year later St. Andrew's Presbyterian and St. Stephen’s Anglican (Hatzic) churches were in operation. The Fraser River was the lifeline for the early settlers, bringing in supplies and taking out their fruit to markets in New Westminster. The river brought disaster in 1894 when it overflowed its banks flooding all the land up to the CPR tracks. As a result, the merchants moved north of the tracks where Hori Windebank had his hotel, the Masonic Hall was located and two general merchants, Trethewey and Plumridge were already established. Sternwheelers worked the Fraser until the turn of the century. They were able to manoeuvre in very shallow water making it easy for them to pull in to the shore anywhere along the river. By 1920 they were used mainly for pleasure excursions. From the dawn of the new century the expansion of the townsite and municipality brought an influx of people to the area. A new business opened every week. The farms were producing large quantities of fruits and vegetables and everyone was prospering. 32

Mission Visitor Guide 2017

An Agricultural Society formed in 1895 and established an annual fair where farmers displayed their fruits and vegetables and livestock. Storage plants and jam factories were in operation to serve markets outside the community and take care of the surplus fruit not shipped to other destinations. Mission became known as “The Home of the Big Red Strawberry.” The Japanese played an important role in the development of the fruit and berry industry. They arrived early in the 1900s and by the end of the 1930s they owned most of the berry producing farms. When they were evacuated in 1942, the farms were left with no-one to operate them. The two world wars, the importation of fruits at lower prices, along with crop failures due to weather and disease brought the decline to the fruit industry in the mid-1950s. The need for more electricity prompted the building of the Stave Falls Dam and electric plant which began operating in 1912. The construction of this and the Ruskin Dam in 1930 brought new people into the area, created employment, and boosted the economy of the community. Mission’s first source of electricity was in the townsite. It was made from a homemade generator built by Hori Windebank in the basement of his cement block building on the corner

of Grand and First (today Power House Apartments). Telephone service began in 1907 with a line running from Mission to Hatzic. Catherwood and Northcote took over the service and in 1909 established the Mission City Telephone Company with their offices on First Avenue. In 1929 the business “affiliated with BC Telephone” (although continuing to operate as a separate company) and changed its name to Mission Telephone Company Ltd. This name was retained until the company amalgamated with BC Telephone in 1952.

P

eople were now demanding better roads and more roads. Farmers complained the rough roads damaged their fruit on the way to the factory or shipping point. In 1910 the first automobile arrived in Mission, creating new businesses – dealerships and the “service station.” The Mission Auto Club formed in 1915. By 1916 Dewdney Trunk Road, a chief artery on the north side of the Fraser, was completed through to Nicomen Island and in 1922, another section was finished between Steelhead and the townsite. In 1927 the CPR bridge was planked for vehicle traffic, eliminating the long waits for the ferry. Mission’s Main Street (now First Avenue) was paved in 1929.

The first issue of the Fraser Valley Record (today Mission City Record) was published in 1908. Initially located in a small room at the back of George Abbot’s new building on the corner of James and First, the newspaper moved into its own building on the north side of First Avenue between James and Welton. In 1940 they moved into their present location. The threat of fire was always a worry. In 1911 the Anglican Church offered the use of its new bell to summon the volunteer fire brigade equipped with a chemical wagon on two wheels and a hose. In 1914 a waterline was laid along First Avenue with a pipe and a length of hose housed in a box in each block. A volunteer fire brigade was formally organized in 1927. The first fire hall was located on the site of the present Museum. In 1934 they expanded on a lot behind the present Scotiabank and relocated in 1974 to its present location on 7th and Murray. In 1920 Mission’s first official hospital opened in a rented house on the corner of Birch Street and Third Avenue through the extraordinary efforts of the Mission Memorial Hospital Society and the Auxiliary. Land was then secured on the corner of 5th Avenue and James Street and in 1925, Mission’s first built hospital (today Mission Memorial Centre) opened

debt-free. This hospital was dedicated to the memory of First World War servicemen and it served the community until the present facility on Hurd Street opened in 1965.

located constructed on Welton and 2nd (1945), then on Grand and 7th Avenue (1963). The present Public Safety building on Oliver Street was opened in 1984.

eterans from the First World War formed an organization called the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 57 (Mission) in 1927. They met in various locations until 1930 when they purchased property at the corner of First and Lougheed Highway. They secured the Acme House sitting on the road allowance for the new Lougheed Highway which the provincial government moved to the site. In 1936 they had raised enough money to construct a building adjacent to Acme House and later enlarged it, serving members until its sale in 1989. Since then, the Legion has relocated twice (1993 and 2004) to serve the changing needs of its membership.

The first circulating Library was started by Mrs. P. Vogel and Mrs. H. Abercrombie in 1912, located above James Plumridge’s store. The first steps towards a public library were taken in 1930 when Mission was selected to participate in the Carnegie Trust Fund five year library initiative that resulted in the establishment of a valley-wide system known as the Fraser Valley Union Library (today Fraser Valley Regional Library). Through the efforts of Tony Taulbut, the former Bank of Commerce building was donated for a library in 1947 and moved up Welton to 2nd Avenue. It became the home of the Mission Museum when a new library was constructed on the corner of Second and James in 1972. Today’s library facility opened in 1994.

V

Arthur W. Lane was the first Provincial Constable in Mission, serving from 1896 to 1910. The Provincial Police patrolled the townsite and the unorganized territory while Municipal police patrolled the District. The RCMP took over all policing duties in the Village of Mission in 1950 and the Corporation of the District of Mission in 1967. The first police station was on the north side of on First Avenue. Later, buildings were

The forest provided warmth, shelter and a livelihood for the settlers. Ten years later, the Municipality of Mission was granted a Tree Farm License (TFL 26) which provided the rights to plan and manage the local forest. During the early post-World War II period in Mission (1946-1959), the community experienced both growth and setbacks. The Board of Trade organized the first annual Strawberry Festival (1946-1956) to promote Mission’s fruit-growing industry. The following year, local boys raced in the first internationally affiliated soapbox derby in Mission (1947-1973) which grew into a major amateur racing event for youth aged 11 to 15 years old from all over western Canada. An outdoor heated swimming pool on 2nd and Horne and a Junior/Secondary school on 7th were opened in 1952 and Westminster Abbey was built on the hill overlooking Hatzic in 1954. There were also disasters that seriously impacted the community. In 1948 the Fraser River broke through the dikes flooding the whole valley paralyzing the community until the water subsided. 34

Mission Visitor Guide 2017

Seven years later (1955) when a span of the CPR bridge battered by the spring freshet collapsed, it took over a year before it was repaired. The 1960s gave Mission a new Court House on 7th Ave., Mission Oaks Shopping Mall, and Turners Building Products, (took over the old Eddy Match factory). This decade also marked a new era in the governance of community when the Town of Mission City and the Corporation of the District of Mission amalgamated in 1969 to form the present day local government. In the 1970s we saw a new City Hall, a new four lane bridge across the Fraser River and the Leisure Centre built. The Welton Tower Apartments for senior citizens opened on 2nd and Welton. The Downtown Business Association formed to meet the growing needs of the store merchants.

Through the efforts of the Friends of the Hatzic Rock Society, this ancient site was saved and is officially recognized as a National Heritage site, to be preserved in perpetuity. The site is currently closed to the public. estminster Abbey attracts thousands of visitors each year to its serene perch high above the Fraser Valley.

Westminster Abbey is a Benedictine monastery of priests and brothers who dedicate their lives to God. The iconic bell tower can be seen and the bells heard from across the Fraser Valley. The monks ring many of the 10 bells daily before Mass, and for 15 minutes before Mass and Vespers on Sundays.

The church is 162 feet long by 110 feet wide and contains 64 stained glass windows. The rainbow coloured glass creates windows that stand 22 feet high around the perimeter of the church. The dome of coloured glass rises 50 feet above the altar, allowing shafts of light to stream into the church. Visitors are welcome, and asked to follow the dress code of no shorts or overly exposed skin, when entering the Abbey Church.

WEEKDAY SERVICES Sung Mass 6:30 a.m. Midday Prayer 11:55 a.m. Vespers 5:30 p.m.

SUNDAY SERVICES Sung Mass 10:00 a.m. Midday Prayer 11:55 a.m. Vespers 4:30 p.m. No cycling, picnics or dogs are allowed on the grounds.

Candlelight Parade The Mission Candlelight Parade has become a holiday tradition not to be missed. The annual event, brought to the community by the Mission Regional Chamber of Commerce is one of the largest night time parades in Western Canada. The parade attracts an estimated crowd of more than 15,000 spectators and contains around 80 floats that range from school marching bands to businesses and non-profit organizations. Highlights of the parade include beautiful floats, flamboyant marching bands, lovely vocal performances, dancers, a lot of great giveaways, classic cars, fire trucks and police vehicles. Floats are illuminated with thousands of lights that impress the audience in the dark. Of course, the highlight of the evening is the arrival of Santa himself. Kids cheer and yell as the jolly old elf makes his appearance. This years marks the 34th annual parade which takes place on Dec. 1, 2017. The parade runs right through Downtown Mission on First Ave.

Year-round tax service provided. You don’t have to wait until tax time to get answers to your tax questions.

Mission First Mission’s Downtown core has changed with time. You can see the growth on First Avenue (from top to bottom) in1910, 1924 and 1946. First Avenue, originally named Washington Street when it was constructed in 1890 by James Welton Horne, was re-named Main Street in 1932. Shortly after the amalgamation of the District of Mission and the Town of Mission City (in November, 1969), a bylaw was passed renaming the street First Avenue.

Soapbox Derby

T

he Mission Soapbox Derby was first run in 1946 as part of the inaugural Strawberry Festival, held on Main Street from Grand Street to Horne Street. The first year of the derby was a huge success as onlookers enjoyed watching the cars zoom down the course in their makeshift soap box cars. In 1947 the race landed Mission in some hot water when the All-American Soap Box Derby Association discovered that Mission’s Soap Box Derby was infringing on their copyrights. Luckily however, instead of quashing the small-town event, an agreement took place which gave the Mission District rights to an American Soapbox Association franchise, meaning that the winner in Mission would go on to compete

in the All-American Soap Box Derby Championship Finals in Akron, Ohio. By 1950 the Derby was a provincialwide contest. To accommodate the Derby’s increasing popularity, the city of Mission build a new track in 1953 at the Fairgrounds. In 1956 the Strawberry Festival was dropped to handle the Derby exclusively, which subsequently attracted 20,000 visitors to Mission that year. In 1958 the Derby had over 200 contestants representing over 40 different communities. Although the Soapbox Derby had a multitude of sponsors, they did not provide sufficient monetary contributions to offset the costs.

In 1999, sponsored by the Mission & District Lions Club, the derby was started again. It was taken over in 2002 by the Mission & District Soap Box Derby Association and has taken place annually ever since.

Due to declining local interest, the derby was cancelled in 1974 after GM withdrew their sponsorship.

The 2017 Mission Soapbox Derby is set for June 24, For information visit missionsoapbox.com.
