Message from the Mayor Chilliwack is quickly becoming known as an outdoor recreation capital in British Columbia. Most of our residents spend the spring and summer months playing outside on our mountains, and in our lakes, rivers, parks, sports fields, playgrounds, bike parks and spray parks. In addition to spectacular outdoor recreation opportunities, we’ve also delivered an excellent program lineup in this Leisure Guide, offering something for every age and interest.
of the community school associations. Each contributor to the Leisure Guide brings with them an expertise that collectively addresses the needs and interests of the residents of our community. Likewise, many of our facilities are operated by an independent contractor with the expertise and knowledge best suited for daily operations. They help shape the recreational programming we all enjoy.
The upgrade of the Landing Spray Park this year was made possible in part thanks to a grant from Western Economic Diversification Canada of $225,000 in celebration of Canada’s 150 birthday this July. I can’t wait to celebrate our nation’s birthday together as a community and look forward to watching my grandkids use the brand new spray park this summer.
On behalf of Chilliwack City Council, I encourage you to take a moment to read through this guide, see what it has to offer and take advantage of all the amazing ways you can get active in Chilliwack. Don’t forget to visit us online at chilliwack.com for updates on projects, events and celebrations within our community. You can also stay connected by liking us on Facebook at facebook.com/Chilliwack, or by following us on Twitter at twitter.com/City_ Chilliwack.
The programs in our Leisure Guide are made possible thanks to strong relationships between many different stakeholder groups. This guide is the result of partnerships between the City of Chilliwack, the Association of Community Programmers and School District No. 33, who assist in the support

Outdoor Sports Venues
The City of Chilliwack has more than 58 sports fields and 95 ball diamonds available to the community for recreational and league play. All groups and organizations wanting to play on any of these fields must first obtain a Facility use Agreement from the Recreation & Culture Department. Regular sport groups should contact their league scheduler for times and fields available. FIELD STATUS: An “OPEN” sports field is available for current permit holders as designated by the City of Chilliwack. However, when sports fields are designated open, pre-game field checks still must be completed by the officials and/or coaches to verify the safety and playability of the surface at that time. City of Chilliwack fields that have become unsafe or are in a position to sustain significant surface damage should be “closed” by the officials and/or coaches.
Exhibition Field
Exhibition Field is considered one of the premier artificial turf facilities in the lower mainland. This outdoor facility is designed to accommodate football games for both CFL and NFL rules. The layout of Exhibition also allows it to be used for either one full,
three mini or twelve micro soccer pitches. With the large Grandstand, four team change rooms and an official change room, Exhibition is ideal for any premier sporting event hosted with in Chilliwack.
Townsend Park
Townsend Park is a 15 hectare park west of Downtown Chilliwack. The Park earns its name from Harold Townsend who lived and farmed this land until 1946, the City purchased it and then began the process of developing a major public sports facility for ball sports and general leisure. The park is equipped with a Kinsmen Ability children’s play area, change rooms, concession, washrooms and other amenities. This outdoor facility also has a walking trail around its perimeter which is approximately 2.3 km in length This complex contains 5 multipurpose pitches, three of which are lit and six lit softball diamonds. Diamonds one to six all radiate out from the centrally located washrooms, concession and a pavilion capable of seating 80 people. These facilities are all easily accessible from the large parking lot located at the west end of the park. Pitch A is an all-weather turf field correctly lined for football, soccer
and field hockey. It is available for both competition and for practice. Complete with a scoreboard and an announcer’s viewing tower- Pavilion, fixed bleachers are provided and there is excellent lighting available. Pitches B through D are well positioned off of Wolfe Road and have a concession and washroom/change facility centered amongst them. These soccer fields do not have available lights.
PORTABLE DISPLAY SCREEN The City of Chilliwack’s portable display screen is 10 feet high, 17 feet long and contains more than 245,000 LED lights. Just like the screens you find in major sporting venues, the City’s portable screen has the capability of displaying DVD/video presentations, cable TV or live camera feeds.

Dog owners are asked to adhere to the following guidelines when using the off-leash park: • Dogs must be under firm voice and visual control • Dog owners must be in attendance • Dog owners must have a leash visible • Dogs must display a current dog license and be up to date on their vaccinations • Dogs owners are required to pick up after their dog and dispose of the droppings • Dog owners are asked to repair any damage such as holes that are the result of your pets visit to the park • Please avoid bringing toys and food to the park when other dogs are present
WaterFowl in the Parks We get it! Feeding the ducks and the geese in the park seems like a kind and compassionate thing to do. But did you know it is actually the opposite and below are a few reasons why. When feeding waterfowl you: • Disturb natural migration patterns leading to overcrowding which can lead to disease and fighting amongst the population. • Destroy the birds ability to forage and find food themselves • Deprive the bird of essential nutrients and can cause serious nutritional problems and even death • Create less usable park area do to the high level of bird droppings left by the increasing waterfowl population. • And lastly…………….
• RUN THE RISK OF BEING FINED $2,000! That right; there is a large fine under Bylaw 2974 which prohibits the feeding of waterfowl in Chilliwack.

There’s a new Y coming to Chilliwack The Chilliwack YMCA serves more than 6,500 people each year—4,000 at the Hocking Avenue location alone. But the needs of the community are growing. That’s why we are working to create an expanded and updated YMCA centre of community—a place to continue building resilient kids and strong families. While the dream of a new Y is very exciting, we must temporarily close the centre starting July 1st in order to construct the new Y which is scheduled to open in Summer 2018. All Y members as of June 30th will be enrolled in our Honorary Hold program to honour their commitment and keep them engaged. All membership payments will be paused for the duration of the temporary closure. With a membership on hold, you will have continued access to any YMCA health and fitness centre in Greater Vancouver and Canada, as well as member discounts on programs like YMCA Camp Elphinstone and day camps. Your 2016/2017 membership fee rate is also guaranteed until January 1, 2020. All of these benefits are at no risk to anyone joining before June 30, 2017. Cancel your Honorary Chilliwack Membership at any time without penalty. Any questions? Please contact us at 604-792-3371 or drop by our membership centre at 45844 Hocking Avenue.

BUILDING COMMUNITY
one neighbourhood at a time! Did you know that building relationships in your community can help improve your sense of well-being, quality of life and neighbourhood safety? The City of Chilliwack’s Neighbourhood Grant Program was developed to support residents and organizations that have small but powerful ideas that will bring people together and enhance neighbourhoods. If you have an idea, such as a block party, BBQ or enhancement project for your neighbourhood, the City of Chilliwack may be able to help through funding and/or resource assistance. Let’s work together to make every neighbourhood a little more vibrant and full of friends! Visit chilliwack.com/community for more information.
