A-Dress-ing the big day A bridal gown, the splendour of which relies on a skirt trimmed with multilayered flounces, recalls the feminine fashions of the years 1845 to 1860. But the bride of 2010 wears the volume, the shape and savoir-faire of that era with style, marrying absolute femininity with today’s confidence and independence. The visual impact of the multilayered dress, with its cascading effect in the skirt, is a major theme in bridal salons this year. Designers propose romantic gowns adorned with foamy fabrics of voluminous proportions. These outfits are reserved for modern women who have no fear of the great classics. An absolute monument of fabric, the skirt is often independent of the bodice, which is a whalebone corset, low-cut and of simple design.
So the skirt is what makes the gown. However, as all the volume is over the underskirt rather than underneath, the preferred fabrics are light and filmy. Transparent voile is often used as well as tulle for an even more exaggerated effect. And, since this cascading effect is found in the lower part of the bride’s silhouette, many designers have been tempted by graduated colours; provocative glimpses of pink and black The dress, of course, is white, but the border of each flounce is coloured. This inspiration probably comes from the gown designed by John Gagliano for Dior and worn divinely by Gwen Stefani for her wedding in 2003. But, celebrity or not, the 2010 version of the bicoloured skirt, is a rustling, divinely feminine work of art.

important role. If you prefer creams, you will have the choice of vanilla cream, a pastry cream or a whipped cream in your favourite flavour: coffee, hazelnut, mocha, orange blossom, raspberry, ginger, amaretto, Grand Marnier and more. You may also prefer chocolate, white or dark, or a succulent fruity mousse. If you are the more adventurous type, you can also try different fillings with flavours that complement each other. Finally, the icing on the cake. This can be made with sugar paste, creamy vanilla or almond paste. Or, for a more decadent touch, you can opt for a white or dark chocolate ganache.
t is never easy to choose your wedding cake. Here are some suggestions to guide you. The first step — and probably the easiest — should be deciding what style of cake you want to have. You can select the classic tiered cake, which is certainly the most popular choice. You can also opt for individual-sized portions, perhaps a pyramid of small cream puffs or little cupcakes on platters. Next, for the choice of flavours, you must rely on your tastebuds. If you want to stay with traditional flavours, you will have the choice of pound cake, classic vanilla or sponge cake. The very popular chocolate cake or carrot cake are also guaranteed to make you salivate. There are also some non-traditional selections, such as tiramisu, cheesecake or charlotte cake. Why not let yourself be tempted by more exotic flavours, such as a Polish lemon or chocolate Baba? How about a tiered cake with a different flavour for each layer? Now for the filling. It is important to choose this carefully. In this, as well, your tastebuds will play an

Real or silk: Flowers are essential Flowers always play an important role in wedding decoration. They lend romance, colour and joy to the celebration. As the main decorative accessory, it’s important to select them with care. You must first decide if you want to go with real flowers or silk. The wedding colours will set the tone for the type of flowers used in the bouquet. White with green foliage is usually the main colour, but sometimes there’s also a harmonious assortment, especially when using wildflowers for a country look. Secondly, establish what you need by making a precise inventory. For members of the wedding party, plan one bouquet to carry and one to throw for the bride, bouquets for the flower girl and bridesmaids, corsages for mothers and grandmothers, boutonnieres for the groom, best man and ushers, fathers and grandfathers.
For the different sites, identify which decorations are for the ceremony at the church, and which for the reception hall. Don’t forget about the cars. Flowers come in many different forms: baskets, centrepieces, arches, a strand of flowers wrapped around a column, cascading, etc. More and more, you can find arrangements in clear glass vases which show the stems, and even flowers floating in a bowl of liquid. Basically, it’s creativity in flowers. It’s up to you to find the florist who can create the atmosphere you’re dreaming of. Make sure he or she has no other commitments that day, and that your needs are understood. Get information about the cost, the deposit required, if any, and the method of payment. A strand of flowers curls around the column, leading up to a superb bouquet.
Come in and experience the Ànest in bridal and formal fashions.

Online registry
D
ifferent stores offer many different types of gift-registry services for your wedding. However, since the services they offer can vary, take the time to shop around before finalizing your choice. The main services you can expect are giftwrapping, delivery, updating your registry on the Internet, etc. The advantage of Internet service is that it operates 24 hours a day, seven days a week, from everywhere around the world. Your guests can access your gift registry and choose a gift that suits their budget from
your selection. In addition, the registry is updated automatically. Determine your needs and make your list to get a better idea of the type of store that offers what you want. Even if you plan to include gifts in different price ranges to accommodate different budgets, always select quality items in a classic style that will last longer. Once you have selected the store, make an appointment to register about six months before your wedding. Check to see if the items can be crossed off by telephone and if the store offers Internet service.

The art of selecting perfect stationery
B
efore you meet with a stationery supplier, establish your guest list; you can expect a 55 to 80 per cent response rate. Note who will be invited to the ceremony to know how many wedding announcements are required, and who will attend the reception to determine the number of invitations to be sent. You must also determine the number of response cards and stamped return envelopes required, unless you prefer to ask your guests to e-mail their response. After the wedding, just add the gifts you have received to determine the number of thank-you cards you must send. Consult online catalogues for inspiration about the style, model, colour, design and even the texts you would like for your stationery. When you meet with your sup-
plier, you will be ready to select the stationery that best suits your taste and the level of formality you
want to impart to the event. Prepare the information you must provide: date, times, and addresses for the ceremony and the reception, travel information, e-mail address and the text for the announcement. Next, contact a few stationery suppliers and enquire about payment methods, including any advance deposit requirements. Ask for estimates from the ones who seem capable of fulfilling your needs in a professional and dependable manner. Meet with your chosen supplier in the store or, if the service is available, in your home. Anticipate a two- to three-hour meeting to select the stationery. Make sure that the final product conforms to your order, and that the supplier assumes full responsibility for any mistakes that may occur in the order or the printing.

Make room for the brown tuxedo
T
he brown tuxedo, which first appeared in 2007, is Freeman’s big novelty. With its tone-on-tone stripes, the chocolate brown tuxedo is all the rage with grooms who want to stand out. The trendy new brown tuxedo, with pleatless trousers and a matching vest, has given rise to a style that is superbly polished. For a groom who is looking for an alternative to traditional black, chocolate brown is tremendously popular. This year, Classy offers more “fashion” models that will please modern grooms. The tuxedo takes on a new “fashion” look with a longer jacket and tone-on-tone fabric to enhance the groom’s physique with refinement. Because they are always popular with grooms, Classy is committed to offering only high-end tuxedoes that are well-cut and made of quality fabrics. The trends for the groom are always based on the classic look, sometimes with a touch of eccentricity. Among the current trends, we also see fine tone-ontone or contrasting stripes, for an original and refined look. The classic cut is always popular. While black and brown are the top choices, we also find tuxedoes in blue tones and the ever practical white for summer.

Making the big day kid’s play
F
or all those brides and grooms who are already parents, the idea of inviting very young children to their wedding can be something of a headache — even more so when all the children get together. With all the excitement, the situation can quickly get out of control, but don’t panic because there are solutions! This situation can be tackled in two different ways. On the one hand, you could choose the option of organizing a separate party for the younger generations, with a different menu and special entertainment and activities. This option, however, calls for a good deal of planning, a generous budget and a certain amount of preparation. But if this scenario appeals to you, why not ask someone you have confidence in to become an animator for the occasion? If you decide to go this route, it would be preferable to reserve an area dedicated to all the children and to hire a magician. This surprise is a guaranteed success with children. You could also organize things in a completely different way and integrate the children into the celebrations. Children need to feel they are useful, to feel they are
part of the grown-up world. To do this, they could give a helping hand when it’s time to serve the cocktails or the wine. Once the dancing has started, they could be given the task of going around the tables asking the guests to write down their favourite songs on a piece of paper which the children would then give to the DJ. In other words, it doesn’t need much imagination for them to be very helpful.
Children need to feel they are useful, to feel they are part of the grown-up world.

Making memories are a snap Wedding photographers must be discreet during those intimate moments, be sensitiveto your feelings and love the spontaneity of the moment. Finding the perfect photographer can be a real headache for the bride and groom. A crucial choice indeed, as the photograph album is always a precious souvenir. Whatever you do, never accept the services of a distant family member who happens to have a reasonably good camera. In fact, few people have enough experience and knowledge to deliver a final product capable of reproducing the magic of a wedding. Looking for a photographer is a little like finding your future partner; you need to discover that rare pearl, the one just right for your style and your personality. It is vital, therefore, to organize a first, informal meeting where general questions can be discussed regarding the
photographer’s methods and how he or she intends to recreate your special day in pictures. Some offer eccentric, modified or sepia photographs, others will talk about a photographic wedding story while some will offer to take the photographs when the light is ideal . .. even when this is not on the day of your wedding! Whatever is suggested, if it captures your interest always ask to see examples of the photographer’s work, although any professional would have taken care to bring a portfolio to the meeting. This promotional tool should be able to speak for itself: No fake expressions, an atmosphere faithfully captured, natural colours. It’s always a bad sign if, from the first encounter, the photographer spends a lot of time trying to sell you a package deal in an insistent manner. Think quality rather than economy.
