A

young girl with long braids, ruby slippers and a scruffy-looking dog once said, “there’s no place like home.”

Though her words have since become somewhat of a cliché – finding themselves in album titles, songs and TV commercials of all sorts – the essence of the phrase is something almost everybody can relate to.

Just ask anyone who has ever spent a long period of time away from home.

Growing up, I lived in the same house from the time I was three until I moved into my own tiny basement suite at the age of 20.

I remember all through my childhood years and into my teens wishing my parents would sell our house so we could move.

Not that there was anything wrong with our house, I just hadn’t experienced moving and wanted to see what it was like to live in a new home.

Since I first moved out of my childhood house, I have moved countless times to apartments and houses all over the Lower Mainland.

Though I’ve lived in some nice places in recent years, I’ve never really found a place that gave me that sense of being

I

t’s a cloudy day in October, but the view of uptown Granville Street from the corner office on the fourth floor isn’t obstructed by the weather.

Former Vancouver Canuck Trevor Linden is seated at a large desk, surrounded by binders, notepads and filefolders neatly placed on the desk’s clean wooden surface.

It’s a corporate setting that his many hockey fans might find strange for the six-foot-four Alberta native, after being accustomed to seeing him on the ice, decked out in full hockey gear, chasing down pucks with the dedication and heart he was well known for in his 20-year career.

When Linden stepped off the ice after his last game with the Canucks on April 5, 2008 – in front of a thunderous home crowd – it’s likely many thought he wouldn’t stray far from the game he made a career of for more than two decades.

But he hasn’t laced up his skates since.

“The easiest thing would have been to go right into hockey. That would have been easy,” he says of his decision to part ways with the game. “But I wanted to give myself an opportunity to step back and take a couple years and identify with who I am, what I’m about, is there something else that I can do?”

It didn’t take long for Linden to find plenty of ways to keep himself busy outside of the hockey rink.

He has partnered with brother Jamie and developer Howard Airey on various real estate projects, and just last month announced the launch of a fitness club in Coquitlam, Club 16, in which he’s teamed up with South Surrey’s Chuck Lawson.

“I’m way too young to retire,” the 40-year-old says with a smile. “I never looked at it that when I quit hockey, I was going to play golf every day and hang out.”

While he admits he’s had many offers to partner in business ventures over the years, starting a gym is something he felt particularly passionate about, something he could connect with on a personal level.

“Fitness was a big part of my life when I played, and it continues to be a big part of my life now that I’m retired, maybe even bigger.”

His goal with Club 16 – set to officially open its premier location in January – is to make fitness accessible to everyone, regardless of age, income and physical capability.

“I think a lot of people have this idea that in order to go to a club, you have to be in shape to go.

We want to create that atmosphere where you’re accepted, regardless of where you are on your fitness path and make it so that it’s a really unintimidating place to be.”

I love the game, I love the competition, I love working with the best ... but I can never recreate that.

Much like launching a fitness club, real estate developing – with which Linden first became involved in 2007 – is also something that has piqued his interest for years.

“I’ve always been interested in real estate… from an investment standpoint, but also from an architecture and design standpoint,” he says. “I always felt that it was an asset class I was comfortable in – it’s tangible, you can touch it and feel it.”

Though he has a few projects under his belt – including a Point Grey condo development, single-family homes in Vancouver and a new condo project currently under construction in Victoria – he hesitates to label himself a full-blown “real estate developer.”

“I think I’m a bit of an apprentice, but I’m enjoying the process and learning daily.”

Although it’s been more than two years since he hung up his skates, Linden still spends time with his legions of fans, signing autographs and sharing memories from his career with the Canucks. And with popularity that eclipses that of the province’s most famous athletes – Lou Pasaglia, Bob Lenarduzzi, Stan Smyl – there’s no shortage of opportunity for Linden to connect with those who have cheered him on.

“The people of Vancouver and British Columbia have been so good to me. I always look at it as a real privilege to be able to chat… people always have a story.

I’ve never looked at it as a burden, ever.”

Between his many business ventures and public appearances, Linden manages to find time to squeeze in some recreation – he’s an avid cross-country and alpine skier, as well as a cyclist, recently completing the GranFondo road race from Vancouver to Whistler.

While he makes a point of signing up for at least one big race every year, he’s quick to point out that his involvement is not about the competition.

“I competed for so long, I really look at these cycling races… for experiences, to see parts of the world, just to go and have fun.”

That’s not to say he doesn’t miss competition – it’s one of the many things he loved about playing hockey for a living, something he admits he does miss, despite not having played in 2½ years.

“It’s the best job going – I love what I did,” he says. “I love the game, I love the competition, I love working with the best, whether it be the best coaches or the best players. But I can never recreate that.”

And his new work schedule – a drastic change from that of a pro-hockey player – is one he has quickly grown to enjoy.

“When you play hockey... from September until the end of May, you’re kind of off the grid. It’s either a game day or a practice day. What I really like about my current situation is the flexibility.”

He points out, however, that despite the less stringent schedule, his new career provides him with plenty of challenges.

“Before, life was pretty simple. I go to the rink every day and I play hockey.

Now, I’ve got the real estate, I’ve got the fitness, I do corporate speaking.

“I’m enjoying what I’m doing now, there’s a lot of variety and I’m learning every day.

“Is this what I’ll do for the rest of my life? I don’t know. Will I ever be back in hockey? Possibly. I love the game, it’s a great community and I feel connected to it till this day. So, you never know. I wouldn’t rule it out.” i

hef Dan Close has matters of seasonal abundance down cold.

With winter just around the corner, his freezer is fully stocked with the fruits of summer: 50 pounds of freestone peaches, 70 pounds of strawberries, 60 pounds of blueberries, 25 pounds of raspberries and 15 pounds of blackberries sealed in for good measure.

All of it is local, much organic, and some gathered with his family from the Fraser Valley farms surrounding his Cloverdale home.

“Living where we do, there is such a great opportunity to get in the car with my family, especially on a rainy day and get out to the local farms and farmers markets,” says the married father of two young boys. “Picking blueberries with my two-year-old this year really said it all for me – this is what it’s all about.”

For Close, food and family are inseparable. That said, even for a pro who recently spent six years as the productdevelopment chef for Cactus Restaurants, there comes a time when life begins to pile up and the kitchen becomes a conundrum.

“When you cook for a living your free time just can’t be all about cooking,” says Close.

An avid triathlete with a lifelong passion for athletics, he completed the Ironman Canada in 2009 and takes to the golf greens with as much enthusiasm as the garden.

“My own personal experience with varied interests and commitments – both business and personal – gave me the inspiration for Dan Close Food Concepts.”

Time is the key ingredient that most of us lack.

Cactus Club Restaurants was to take the chain’s cuisine beyond the burger, so to with his self-named Food Concepts, Chef Close elevates the milieu of frozen-food offerings.

“It’s a matter of changing perceptions one meal at a time. If I’m a chef and I can’t find time to cook, I figured there would be plenty of others in the same situation. It turns out there are and they are loving it,” says Close, whose boil-in-a-bag solutions have found abundant appeal with new families and busy singles alike.

From the health-conscious options to the online ordering, Close has found a definitive niche that continues to grow.

“I was living the business before it launched, looking for quick, healthy mealtime solutions as a chef, father, husband and athlete. What has emerged is a pretty health-conscious line that serves my own family well and works for others too,” says Close who keeps a keen eye on the ingredients.

“Time is the key ingredient that most of us lack, so long slow braises and rewarding flavour is what I aim for. Using local product 12 OCTOBER 2010 INDULGE

is a natural choice for flavour and I am using organic whenever possible, primarily with the proteins.”

His aim is not a full-scale, meal replacement program, but something that delivers a readyin-minutes showcase accompaniment or main for any meal. With a few ready-to-go dishes on hand and some basic staples, Close’s goal is to bring some balance back to the kitchen.

Cooking, he agrees, can be a joy, especially in the cooler months, but a few simple things are required: a good, sharp 8” knife and a different perspective.

“We need to be purging our cupboards of herbs we haven’t used in months, taking stock of the on-hand essentials and making a habit of the quick, daily fresh shop,” says Close.

At the core of his home kitchen are fresh and dried herbs, a variety of oils (extra-virgin olive, grapeseed), a handful of local honeys and a spectrum of red, white, cider and fruit vinegars – in short, everything shy of the lettuce and a pinch of salt to get dinner started.

And this, Chef Close explains, is the most crucial step. “When it comes to the kitchen, the key is this: just do it.” i

here’s no question that windows can bring life to a room – by letting in sunlight and providing a view to the outdoors. But what goes around the windows – drapes, curtains or blinds – can have an equally strong impact on the room’s overall appearance.

From adding a splash of colour and vibrance, to creating an ambience of sophistication, elegance and style, the proper window treatments can make or break a room.

But with a plethora of options for size, style, fabrics, patterns and colours, how does one choose the perfect set of drapes or blinds that will give a room the perfect amount of character?

According to Joan Walker, owner of The Curtain Call Drapery & Decorating Co., there is plenty to consider when it

comes to window treatments for any room.

The size of the room is a major factor, Walker said, as well as the amount and type of furniture in the room. Most importantly, however, is the homeowner’s personality and the type of environment he or she wants to create, which Walker said can be influenced by the fabric selection.

“Fabric has a way of creating an ambience – it can really set a tone,” she said.

“With colours, textures, patterns, or if they want something more upbeat or more functional.

Personality is very important.

“Also, you gauge the style of the house – is it contemporary, transitional, are there a lot of family heirlooms?”

Aside from personal taste and overall style, the type of window coverings will likely also vary from room to room, depending on its function.

“Living rooms can have two personalities – formal, or casual and comfortable,” Walker said.

“A bedroom is generally more tranquil, but again, it comes down to lifestyle.”

When it comes to selecting the fabric and creating an ambience, Walker suggests fabrics that are tonal with plenty of texture, as opposed to a heavily patterned fabric, which instead can be used as an accent, for style she describes as “transitional.”

“You don’t need to go crazy with a lot of pattern, when you can add that in with accessories and pillows and things that will give you that long-term style.”

To the untrained eye, picturing the various fabrics, textures and

patterns on the pieces that go into creating a beautiful room can be challenging, even overwhelming.

For Leanne Zanatta, who recently worked with Walker and her team on window treatments and accents in her custom-built White Rock home, having a professional opinion was a huge help. “(Walker) brought so many options and so many materials, and didn’t make me feel pressured, either,” Zanatta said. “I definitely had a vision, but she also knew what was timeless as far as pleating on fabric, and what kind of fabric would drape nicely.”

Once fabric and hardware have been selected, it’s time for Walker and her in-house seamstress, Diane, to get down to work.

This is where Walker says attention to detail is imperative, and having an on-site workshop is beneficial so she and her team can oversee every step of the process.

“We are very hands on, going down to the manufacturing details – hand-sewing, cutting out a pattern, or figuring out how it’s going to be installed, if it’s a tricky window or an odd shape.”

While the drapery’s fabric can help set the tone of a room, furniture has an equally large impact on its overall flow and ambience.

“Size and scale are very important in a room,” Walker said.

“Too much furniture can be overpowering, while to little can be understated. You have to marry the furniture, window coverings and accessories together.”

Walker has worked on her share of unique pieces of furniture in her 15 years as a decor specialist.

From creating a king-sized bed in a spare room, with a custom upholstered headboard that can be separated into two twin-sized beds, to transforming an upstairs mezzanine into a study by way of custom furniture, build-in shelves and small windows cut out of the walls, Walker said there’s always a way to make any room functional and stylish.

T

here’s something spooky going on in Surrey that has thousands of Fraser Valley residents jumping out of their skin.

For the past eight years during the month of October, Potter’s Nursery on 72 Avenue has been transformed into a scream-inducing labyrinth of terror, and this year is shaping up to be more frightening than ever.

With more than 9,000 square feet of dark, twisting hallways, spine-tingling digital sounds and eerie actors, the Potter’s House of Horrors is what organizers call, “not for the faint of heart.”

The annual Halloween event has grown steadily since its first frightening year in 2002, and last year saw close to 18,000 terrified people take a walk through the display.

Though the haunt only runs for a little more than two weeks each October, Potter’s staff have been busy preparing for this year’s festivities for several weeks.

“We start setting up the haunted house well in advance, about two months ahead of time. Late August is usually the start date,” said manager Chris Pershick.

“Some aspects are worked on yearround, such as some of the fancier light shows and sound programming.”

This Halloween, the haunted house has been divided into two themed sections – Scary Tales, which will forever change the way people think about Mother Goose; and Hell Pen, described as a “penitentiary gone very wrong,” complete with evil wardens, deranged prisoners and ruthless guards.

Each horrifying display is meticulously designed with plenty of gory details – blood and bodies galore – and if that’s not enough to induce goose-

bumps, dozens of actors are scattered throughout, decked out in costumes and waiting in the dark for their next “victim.”

Potter’s has teamed up with New Image College of Fine Art this year, who have provided not only talented and terrifying actors, but skilled makeup artists to add even more horror.

“We usually have about 20 to 25 actors per night,” Pershick said.

“Add in another 20 cashiers, parking attendants and security, and you have a good 40 people working each night.

Organization is paramount.”

Though a lot of work goes into running the House of Horrors each year, Perschick said for many staff at the nursery, “it’s the highlight of the season.”

“The House of Horrors really gets the creative juices flowing,” he said.

The House of Horrors runs daily through Halloween night from 6 to 10 p.m., and although it is recommended for teens and adults, younger fans of all things frightening have an opportunity to see a toned-down version.

From 6 to 7 p.m. is known as “family hour,” when the house is free of actors, and the sound effects are at a lower volume. Once the clock strikes 7, however, “all hell breaks loose,” and participants enter at their own risk.
