Blackstone Publishing Fall 2020. The season many in our industry have fretted over for so long, and eyed with dread, is upon us. The gnawing question: Will readers be so swept up by the waves of breaking news this fall that they will stop reading and buying new books? In answer to this, we choose to place our trust in the belief that in these months of stormy, divisive political drama, a good book will be the perfect way to let in sanity and light. A good book can also unite us. In our Fall catalog, we offer a stunning collection of diverse, must-have fiction and nonfiction. We are proud of how much our list has grown this year, and we are excited to bring readers new releases from best-selling, award-winning authors, as well as works from notable, debut voices. If you are looking for a back-to-school season read, filled with hope and inspiration, Flying Free by Cecilia Aragon, is a memoir of how a bullied young daughter of immigrants overcame obstacles by combining math and logic with her passion for flying to become the first Latina pilot on the US Aerobatic Team. If escaping into an exhilarating thriller is the balm you seek, we have an exceptional offering of new mystery and suspense releases that will capture your undivided attention, among them New York Times bestselling author Brian Freeman’s riveting new Jonathan Stride novel Funeral for a Friend, James S. Murray (Impractical Jokers) and Darren Wearmouth’s spine-tingling Don’t Move, Edgar Award-finalist and Catherine Ryan Howard’s highly-anticipated, brilliant work of crime fiction, The Nothing Man, and many more. Discover fresh, new debut favorites this fall with Rudy Ruiz, author of The Resurrection of Fulgencio Ramirez, which Blackstone will publish in both Spanish and English editions simultaneously; Leila Rafei, author of Spring, a novel set during the 2011 Arab Spring in Cairo; and Ehsaneh Sadr, author of A Door Between Us, a gripping work of fiction centered around a wedding in Iran amid the highly controversial 2009 Iranian election. We have some terrific young adult fiction offerings this Fall too, including #1 New York Times bestselling author Kristin Cast’s Key to Fear, the first book in a new series, which imagines a future society consumed by fear of a deadly plague, touch is forbidden, and laws are made and enforced by the Key Corporation. We’re also proud to release new young adult fantasy novels in Jill Criswell’s Frozen Saga series and Coco Ma’s Shadow Frost trilogy, plus a remarkable new YA historical fiction novel, Nemesis and the Swan, by Lindsay K. Bandy, which captures an aristocratic nineteen-year-old girl’s fate during the French Revolution. Blackstone will continue our tradition of publishing outstanding adult historical fiction as well, transporting readers to Ancient Rome, bustling Gilded-Age New York City, treacherous colonial Jamestown, glittering Jazz-Age Paris, with new novels including Escaping Dreamland by New York Times bestselling author Charlie Lovett, Etiquette for Runaways by Liza Nash Taylor, Spindle City by Jotham Burrello, Brides of Rome by Debra May Macleod, and The Brief and True Report of Temperance Flowerdew by Denise Heinze. On June 23, 1911—a summer day so magni=cent it seems as if God himself has smiled on the town—Fall River, Massachusetts, is reveling in its success. The Cotton Centennial is in full swing as Joseph Bartlett takes his place among the local elite in the parade grandstand. The meticulously planned carnival has brought the thriving textile town to an unprecedented halt; rich and poor alike crowd the streets, welcoming President Taft to America’s “Spindle City.” Yet as he perches in the grandstand nursing a nagging toothache, Joseph Bartlett straddles the divide between Yankee mill owners and the union bosses who =ght them. Bartlett, a renegade owner, fears the town cannot long survive against the union-free South. He frets over the everpresent threat of strikes and factory =res, knowing his own fortune was changed by the drop of a kerosene lantern. Everything Here Is under Control A Novel By Emily Adrian

“Emily Adrian writes with deft assurance and penetrating insight about the intensities of motherhood, marriage, and female friendship.”

—Heather Harpham, author of Happiness: The Crooked Little Road to Semi–Ever After

“Warm, compassionate, funny, and lled with surprises, Everything Here Is under Control is an accomplished novel by a writer to watch.”

—Brian Morton, author of Starting Out in the Evening and Florence Gordon

Amanda is a new mother, and she is breaking. After a 5ght with her partner, she puts the baby in the car and drives from Queens to her hometown in rural Ohio, where she shows up unannounced on the doorstep of her estranged childhood best friend. Amanda thought that she had left Carrie 5rmly in the past. After their friendship ended, their lives diverged radically: Carrie had a baby the summer after high school, became a successful tattoo artist, and never escaped Ohio’s conservative grid of close-cut grass. But the trauma of childbirth and shock of motherhood compel Amanda to go back to the beginning and to trace the tangled roots of friendship and family in her own life. Compelling and engaging, Everything Here Is under Control is a raw, honest, occasionally hilarious portrait of the complexity, con6icting emotions, and physical trauma of both modern motherhood and the intense, intimate friendships that women forge in their youth. EMILY ADRIAN is the author of two critically acclaimed young adult novels, Like It Never Happened and The Foreseeable Future. She currently lives in Richmond, Virginia, with her husband, her son, and their dog, Hank.

Death Waits in the Dark The Arthur Nakai Mysteries, Book 2 By Mark Edward Langley In this second installment of the Arthur Nakai mystery series, Arthur must discover who killed his childhood love’s two sons, before the killer sets his sight on Arthur. It took all of thirty seconds for two shots to bring the world of Margaret Tabaaha crashing down around her. After losing her husband in Afghanistan during the rst year of Operation Enduring Freedom, her two sons were all that she had left. Now they had been taken from her violently, deliberately, plunging her into a whiskey bottle and stripping away her reason for living. When Arthur Nakai receives a call from Margaret, his childhood sweetheart, her voice pleading for his help, it comes as he is attending a wake for one of the men he considered a brother from his days in the Marines 6th LAR Wolf Pack Battalion. Feeling a deep and responsible obligation to help her, Arthur soon nds himself involved in the multibillion-dollar world of the oil and gas industry, coming face-to-face with an old adversary, Elias Dayton. Their paths had crossed when Arthur was a member of the Shadow Wolves, an elite tactical unit within US Customs and Border Protection. Now Dayton runs Patriot Security, a Blackwatertype rm that keeps the oil rigs, gas wells, and man camps secure from the Water Protectors, protesters pushing to stop the fracking and poisoning of Native lands. As Arthur works through the case from his end, Navajo police chief Jake Bilagody tackles it from another angle, looking into the strained relationship between the oil company and the Navajo people, all while searching for a missing Navajo man that may have unwittingly become a game piece on the reservation checkerboard. When Arthur learns the identity of the boys’ killer, he struggles to make sense of it. Because if the clues are right, he will be forced to make a decision that will haunt him for the rest of his life. MARK EDWARD LANGLEY was instilled with a love for the American West at a young age by his father. All she wants is stability, and that her dreams won’t be thwarted by the unrest sweeping a city she doesn’t belong to—a city that doesn’t even want her there. As the country revolts against the regime it has always known, Jamila, Sami, and Suad nd themselves caught in the whirlwind as they examine their own life choices and, in some cases, deal with the inevitable heartbreak that follows when revolution is not always what it seems. LEILA RAFEI grew up in the Washington, DC area and lives in New York. Spring is her rst novel.

A Door between Us By Ehsaneh Sadr The dissident, the soldier, the bride: will the Green Wave save them or drown them all? Weddings always have their fair share of drama, but this one comes on the heels of the highly controversial 2009 Iranian election and ensuing Green Wave protests. When the matriarch of Sarah’s family arranged her marriage to Ali, it was with the intention of uniting two compatible families. However, as the 2009 election becomes contentious, political differences emerge and Sarah’s conservative family tries to call off the wedding. Sarah and Ali, however, have fallen in love and, against the wishes of their parents, insist on going through with the marriage. Sarah’s cousin, Sadegh, is a staunch supporter of the government and a member of the Baseej, the volunteer militia tasked with arresting protestors and shutting down speech against the regime. Meanwhile, Ali’s sister, Azar, is an activist, a divorce attorney, and a passionate Green Wave supporter, trying to enact change in a way that many Iranians see as in ammatory. When Sarah impulsively shelters a protestor in their car on the drive home from her wedding, she sets off a chain of events that can either unmask the government’s brutality or ruin them all. Sarah, Sadegh, and Azar’s stories weave together in an un inching, humorous, and at times terrifying story that demonstrates that, even as the world is falling apart around us, life goes on. EHSANEH SADR is an Iranian American novelist and social justice activist with a PhD in international relations. She has worked, in various capacities, on campaigns related to biking advocacy, Palestinian human rights, Iranian sanctions, access to credit for rural villagers, and safe spaces for children in crisis. She currently works with the Silicon Valley Bicycle Coalition to create the cultural and infrastructure changes needed to support a shift away from carbon-based modes of transportation. Ehsaneh lives in Northern California with her husband and two children but also considers Washington, DC; Salt Lake City; and Tehran to be home.

But when Siren goes missing, Muck ?nds himself drawn into a world of dirty cops, drug lords, and conspiracies that trace back to the war itself. The only person he can trust isn’t even human. Angel, Siren’s personal AI, was ripped from the singer’s mind the night Siren disappeared. With no idea what has happened to her human host, and pursued by a killer virus, Angel @ees to Muck for answers. Together they struggle to comprehend the conspiracy that entangles both their lives. Tim O’Connor is paid to be violent. He plays for the El Paso Storm in the West Texas Hockey League. People call him Oak. He’s been an enforcer for longer than his hip or shoulder or back have been able to hold together. He is a broken machine of gristle and rage. And he has been away from home for too long. He’s called back to Boston by his mother’s death. There he confronts a life he failed to live, a daughter he doesn’t know, and a body that is quickly breaking down. Still, he can’t conceive of a future without hockey, even as he chews oxycodone and Adderall to numb his injuries and steady his brain. When a brutal encounter with the police places him in the path of Joan Linney, a haunted public defender, and Kip, a boy with a brave face, Oak and his chance companions roam cold streets from Castle Island to Quincy Point, struggling to believe in a different future. In spare, potent language, Jeff W. Bens builds a remarkable character from the skates up. The Mighty Oak is a visceral and emotional experience. The fact of Oak’s physical existence is powerfully rendered, and the bone-deep transformation of his character is one you will not soon forget. JEFF W. BENS is the author of the novel Albert, Himself. He teaches at Manhattanville College in Purchase, New York.

Kingdom of Ice and Bone The Frozen Sun Saga, Book 2 By Jill Criswell In her veins, the blood of gods. In her heart, a thirst for vengeance.

“Sweeps the reader into a lush and vivid world of magic and betrayal…An amazing debut.”

—Erin Beaty, author of the Traitor’s Circle trilogy, on Beasts of the Frozen Sun

Lira and Reyker have lost everything. Including each other. Lira of Stone watched her home burn and her clan fall beneath the sword of the warlord known as the Dragon. She believes the man she loves, a warrior who defected from the Dragon’s army, is dead. Alongside her exiled brother and his band of refugees, she will <ght the forces that conquered her island. But the greatest danger may come from Lira herself—with the blood of banished gods running through her veins, she’s become a weapon, and no one is safe from the power of her wrath. Reyker Lagorsson thought he was done being a Dragonman. That was before he saw Lira leap from a cliff and vanish into the sea. Determined to honor her memory by protecting her people, Reyker must feign loyalty to the warlord, undermine him at every turn, and seek alliances with renegade soldiers—without succumbing to the battle-madness that threatens to possess him once more. When the Fallen Ones offer Lira a chance to defeat the Dragon, her quest leads her to a place she never expected—Iseneld, the warlord’s homeland. Her journey into the heart of the Frozen Sun will put her on a collision course with Reyker, costing both of them more than they ever imagined, and leaving her with a terrible choice: to save their countries, she must forsake everything she loves. JILL CRISWELL is a writer of young adult historical fantasy. Born and raised in the swamps of northeastern Florida, she earned degrees in English and psychology and an MFA in creative writing from the University of Central Florida. Her greatest passion, besides reading and writing, is traveling the world; she’s visited <fty countries across six continents, falling in love with places like Iceland, Namibia, and Cambodia. She works as a university English teacher and lives in South Carolina, near the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains, with her husband and daughter (who is named after a volcano in Iceland). FUNERAL FOR A

FRIEND BY BRIAN FREEMAN

Seven years ago, an out-of-town reporter disappeared while investigating anonymous allegations of rape against a prominent politician. Back then, the police believed that the reporter drowned at a dangerous swimming hole called the Deeps … but the discovery of the body changes everything. Now Stride’s partner, Maggie Bei, is forced to ask Stride an uncomfortable question: Did you kill him? Stride is obviously hiding things. He was the last person to see the reporter alive. And he admits lying to Maggie about that meeting, but won’t tell her why. With suspicion in the murder pointing at him, Stride finds himself off the case and on leave from the Duluth Police. Someone was willing to kill rather than let those long-ago secrets come out, and the suspect with the strongest motive … is Stride.

Robert Parrish’s childhood obsession with series books like the Hardy Boys and Tom Swift inspired him to become an author. Just as his debut novel becomes a bestseller, his relationship with his girlfriend, Rebecca, begins to fall apart. Robert realizes he must confront his secret demons by ful lling a youthful promise to solve a mystery surrounding his favorite series—the Tremendous Trio. Guided by twelve tattered books and an unidenti ed but tantalizing fragment of a story, Robert journeys into the history of the books that changed his life, hoping they can help him once again. His odyssey takes him to 1906 Manhattan, a time of steamboats, boot blacks, and Fifth Avenue mansions, but every discovery he makes only leads to more questions. Robert’s quest intertwines with the stories of three young people trying to de ne their places in the world at the dawn of a new and exciting century. The Brief and True Report of Temperance Flowerdew A Novel By Denise Heinze

The remarkable story of America’s original colony, Jamestown, through the lens of two pioneering women who ensured its survival during those early treacherous years. Determined to set the historical record straight, and clear her conscience, Temperance Flowerdew—the wife of Virginia’s rst two governors—puts quill to paper, recounting the hardships that nearly brought the Jamestown colony to its knees, and the extraordinary sacri ce of her servant girl, Lily. When she stepped aboard the Falcon in 1609, Temperance is utterly illequipped to survive the wilderness; all she knows is how to live inside the pages of adventure and philosophy books. Michelle and Cliff Stage bought their isolated vacation cabin in the mountains of North Carolina with hopes of repairing their eighteen-year marriage. But when Cliff disappears one night searching for the source of a mysterious light in the woods, Michelle’s life will change in unimaginable ways. After the sheriff’s department fails to :nd him, Michelle scrambles down the same dark mountainside alone, the strange, beckoning light her only guide. What she discovers is a cabin, identical to theirs, housing a life she barely recognizes—and a husband she hardly knows. Cliff is a changed man. Now caring and considerate, no longer a manipulative womanizer, he is also missing a :nger. He claims that Cassie, their teenage daughter, is dead, killed in a car accident over a year ago. Michelle knows that’s not possible—Cassie had phoned her from Atlanta only hours before. Even when shown Cassie’s grave, Michelle refuses to accept she’s gone. Michelle wants her daughter and her life back, and the only clue to what has happened is a man named Pink. A real estate agent and the man who years earlier built Michelle and Cliff’s cabin, Pink was rumored to have killed his wife and buried her on the property then vanished never to be seen again. But in Michelle’s new reality, Pink and his wife still reside in town and Pink’s smile-splashed billboards are everywhere. To get back to the world where her daughter exists, Michelle must unravel the mystery of Pink while questioning her very reality—and her sanity. Flying Free My Victory over Fear to Become the First Latina Pilot on the US Aerobatic Team By Cecilia Aragon A woman’s exhilarating journey from shy, fearful daughter of immigrants to champion pilot for the US Aerobatic Team The daughter of a Chilean father and a Filipina mother, Cecilia Rodriguez Aragon grew up as a shy, timid child in a small midwestern town during the 1960s. Targeted by school bullies and dismissed by many of her teachers, she worried that people would <nd out the truth: that she was INTF. Incompetent. Nerd. Terri<ed. Failure. This feeling stayed with her well into her twenties when she was told that “girls can’t do science” or “women just don’t know how to handle machines.” Yet in the span of just six years, Cecilia became the <rst Latina pilot to secure a place on the United States Unlimited Aerobatic Team and earn the right to represent her country at the Olympics of aviation, the World Aerobatic Championships. How did she do it? Using mathematical techniques to overcome her fear, Cecilia performed at air shows in front of millions of people. She jumped out of airplanes and taught others how to =y. She learned how to fund-raise and earn money to compete at the world level. She worked as a test pilot and contributed to the design of experimental airplanes, crafting curves of metal and fabric that shaped air to lift inanimate objects high above the earth. And best of all, she surprised everyone by overcoming the prejudices people held about her because of her race and her gender. Flying Free is the story of how Cecilia Aragon broke free from expectations and rose above her own limits by combining math and logic with her passion for =ying in unexpected ways. You don’t have to be a math whiz or a science geek to learn from her story. You just have to want to soar. CECILIA ARAGON is an author, air-show pilot, and the <rst Latina full professor in the College of Engineering at the University of Washington in Seattle. She coauthored Writers in the Secret Garden, has worked with Nobel Prize winners, taught astronauts to =y, and created musical simulations of the universe with rock stars. Her major awards for research, and a stint at NASA designing software for Mars missions, led President Obama to call her “one of the top scientists and engineers in the country.”

Jubilee By Jennifer Givhan She should’ve been a college sophomore, a budding poet working toward her writing career. She should not have been bleeding. Not yet, not this much. When Bianca appears late one night at her brother’s house in Santa Ana, she is barely conscious, though not alone. Jubilee, wrapped in a fuzzy pink romper, is buckled into a car seat. Jubilee, who Bianca feeds and clothes and bathes and loves. Jubilee, who Bianca could not leave behind. Jubilee, a doll in her arms. Told in alternating points of view, Jubilee reveals both the haunting power of our lived experiences and the surreal possibility of the present to heal the past. The :rst thread, “Before Jubilee,” follows Bianca in her girlhood home on the Mexicali border as she struggles with her high school sweetheart, Gabe, and a secret they’ve shared since she was :fteen. The second thread, “With Jubilee,” is told from the point of view of her new love, Joshua, who along with Bianca’s family helps her cope with a mysterious trauma by accepting Jubilee as part of the family. As Joshua’s love for Bianca grows, he fears that Jubilee has the power to tear his tiny family apart. Alternating chapters give readers a unique perspective on Bianca’s present and on her relationship with Jubilee as her past life with Gabe comes to a catastrophic end. Jubilee is at once a darkly suspenseful psychological drama and a luminous re;ection on how beauty emerges from even the most traumatic of experiences. JENNIFER GIVHAN, a National Endowment for the Arts and PEN/Rosenthal Emerging Voices fellow, is a Mexican American writer and activist from the Southwestern desert. It’s a power that runs in his bloodline: the ability to see beyond this world and into another, a realm of magic populated by elves, gnomes, and spirits of every kind. But for much of Adam’s life, that power has been a curse, hindering friendships, worrying his backwoods family, and fueling his abusive father’s rage. Brides of Rome A Novel of the Vestal Virgins The Vesta Shadows Series, Book 1 By Debra May Macleod

“Very intelligent and well-researched Roman historical ction, populated with very strong female lead characters…A ne start to a promising series.”

—Historical Novel Society

It is a world of power and privilege, secrets and sacred duty. It is the world of ancient Rome. And it is the esteemed Vestal Virgins—priestesses of Vesta, goddess of the home and hearth—who protect the Eternal Flame that protects the Eternal City. Dedicated to a thirty-year vow of chaste service, Priestess Pomponia :nds herself swept up in the intrigue, violence, wars, and bedroom politics of Rome’s elite—Julius Caesar, Antony and Cleopatra, Octavian and his maneuvering wife, Livia—all the while guarding the secret affection she has in her heart. But when a charge of incestum—a broken vow of chastity—is made against the Vestal order, the ultimate punishment looms: death by being buried alive in the “Evil Field.” In Brides of Rome, Book One in the Vesta Shadows series, Debra May Macleod skillfully recreates the world of ancient Rome with all its brutality and brilliance, all its rich history and even richer legend. A true page-turner that is as smart as it is compelling, this must-read novel brings the Vestal order to life like never before. DEBRA MAY MACLEOD is an author of historical :ction that focuses on the ancient Roman religion of Vesta and the Vestal Virgins. She lives in Canada with her husband and son, but visits Italy often for research (and sun).

From her prison cell in revolutionary Paris, nineteen-year-old aristocrat Hélène d’Aubign recalls the events that led her to choose between following in her parents’ unforgivable footsteps or abandoning the man she loves. Despite her world of privilege, Hélène is inspired early on by the radical ideas of her progressive governess. Though her family tries to intervene, the seeds of revolution have already been planted in Hélène’s heart, as are the seeds of love from an unlikely friendship with a young jeweler’s apprentice. Hélène’s determination to nd true love is as revolutionary as her attempt to unravel the truth behind a chilling set of eye-shaped brooches and the concealed murder that tore her family apart. As violence erupts in Paris, Hélène is forced into hiding with her estranged family, where the tangled secrets of their past become entwined with her own. When she nally returns to the blood-stained streets of Paris, she nds everything—and everyone—very much changed. In a city where alliances shift overnight, no one knows who to trust. Faced with looming war, the mystery of her family’s past, and the man she loves near death, Hélène will soon will nd out if doing one wrong thing will make everything right, or if it will simply push her closer to the guillotine. She lives in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, with her husband, two daughters, and two cats, and currently serves as the co–regional advisor of the Eastern Pennsylvania region of Society of Children’s Book Writers and Illustrators.

Our Story In 1987, in a small garage in southern Oregon, Blackstone was born. With a fresh perspective on the reading experience, founders Craig and Michelle Black, and their trusted team, found new and innovative methods to not only produce and distribute audiobooks but also pioneer creative ways to collaborate with publishers, booksellers, and the audiobook listening community. Today we have over 14,750 audiobooks in our catalog and publish over 1,500 audiobooks a year. On the foundation of this thirty-plus year enterprise, we launched a print and e-book venture in 2015. In that first year, we published a handful of titles. In 2020, we will publish over eighty titles, and our list of projects continues to grow. This year also marks the opening of Blackstone Publishing’s New York City office, located in the Film Center Building, in Hell’s Kitchen. We’re thrilled to be working with bestselling and award-winning authors like Joe Kenda, James S. Murray and Darren Wearmouth, Meg Gardiner, Eric Rickstad, Steve Hamilton, Reed Farrel Coleman, Catherine Ryan Howard, P.C. and Kristin Cast, Don Winslow, Adrian McKinty, Brian Freeman, and Charlie Lovett, as well as launching new, talented debut voices like Rudy Ruiz, Emily Adrian, Ehsaneh Sadr, Jotham Burrello, and Leila Rafei. As we continue to build the audiobook business and grow the print venture, Blackstone has strengthened its sales, marketing, production, library, and editorial teams, as well as increased its presence at BookExpo, BookCon, ALA, regional library conferences, and independent bookseller trade shows. Our goal is to publish groundbreaking books, both fiction and nonfiction, by the most talented writers and to forge long-term connections with readers, booksellers, librarians, and the overall publishing community. We are committed to bringing entertaining and thought-provoking stories to as many people as possible in the most creative and innovative ways imaginable.
