In our fall 2022 catalog, we have an exciting lineup of new books that we can’t wait to share with you. God, Family, Country is Craig Morgan’s inspiring memoir of his life as an American soldier, a country music star, and a family man. Run Time, the highly anticipated new novel from internationally bestselling crime-fiction star Catherine Ryan Howard (56 Days), will release this season. In Run Time, former soap-star Adele steps in to replace another actress on the new psychological horror film Final Draft at the last minute. But something isn’t right about Final Draft … strange goings-on in the script start to happen on set too, and Adele begins to fear that the real horror lies off the page. Award-winning author James Wade, whose first two novels, All Things Left Wild and River, Sing Out, were praised as “rhapsodic” and “haunting,” delivers his most powerful work to date—Beasts of the Earth, a chilling parable about the impossible demands of hate and love, trauma and goodness, vividly set in the landscapes of Texas and Louisiana. Alex Temblador’s captivating first adult novel, Half Outlaw, is an immersive and heartfelt story that explores self-knowledge, acceptance, and the meaning of family, as a woman goes on one last ride with the motorcycle club that raised her and gets more than she bargained for … Matthew Betley’s gripping new novel, The Neighborhood is propulsive, brilliantly plotted, and packed with Betley’s trademark blend of gritty realism and edge-of-your-seat action, making this a can’t-miss read. River Woman, River Demon by acclaimed, award-winning author Jennifer Givhan (Trinity Sight and Jubilee) is a psychological thriller that weaves together folk magick with personal and cultural empowerment. New York Times bestselling author Charlie Lovett will take readers on an international thrill ride featuring a librarian, a professional assassin, and a code breaker, in The Enigma Affair. Valley of Shadows by Rudy Ruiz, the award-winning author of The Resurrection of Fulgencio Ramirez, is a visionary neo-Western blend of magical realism, mystery, and horror, and sheds light on injustice, isolation, and suffering along the US-Mexico border. Blackstone will release our first middle-grade book this season! Children’s advocate and legal commentator Amy Feldman’s Ezra Exposed will be a perfect resource for parents and teachers to help kids understand the meaning and consequences of sexting through ten-year-old Ezra’s relatable story. This fall, Blackstone will also launch the first novel under our new partnership with Weird Tales, the iconic brand known for innovative horror, science fiction, and fantasy. New novels publishing under our “Weird Tales Presents” imprint will be authored by some of the biggest names in horror and dark fiction and will also introduce compelling new voices. GOD, FAMILY, COUNTRY SOLDIER, SINGER, HUSBAND, DAD— THERE’S A WHOLE LOT MORE TO ME
Country music icon, Army veteran, father, outdoorsman—Craig Morgan shares all aspects of his life, revealing stories even his most avid fans don’t know. In 1989, as US news outlets declared an end to Operation Just Cause, Craig Morgan was part of an elite group of military operatives jumping into the jungle along the Panamanian border on a covert operation. Fans know the country music star from his hit songs and acclaimed albums, but there’s a lot more to him—a soldier who worked with the CIA in Panama, an undercover agent who fought sex traffickers in Thailand, and a dedicated family man who lives the values he sings. Craig details these many facets of his lifåe and more in God, Family, Country. An on-stage appearance with his father’s band at age ten may have planted the seeds for life as a country star, but first he trained as a paratrooper in the Army. After earning numerous distinctions, his path to sergeant major was all but assured. Then came a momentous decision: he left the active military to pursue music. With unwavering support from his wife and a pack of part-time jobs, he toughed out the lean years and achieved his first success with the poignant ballad, “Almost Home.” Other hits soon followed, from party songs like “Redneck Yacht Club” to the soul-rending “The Father, My Son, and the Holy Ghost.” Born from the anguish of his son Jerry’s passing, the song’s tribute has consoled and inspired millions across the world. Duty to country has been a constant throughout his life and globe-spanning career. In 2006, as “That’s What I Love About Sunday” topped Country radio charts, Craig was riding in a convoy of Humvees in Iraq. An avid outdoorsman, a former sheriff’s deputy who’s still a member of the auxiliary and always a husband and father first, Craig Morgan will inspire you with his life lived by the deepest values: God, Family, Country.
CRAIG MORGAN AND GOD, FAMILY, COUNTRY WILL BE FEATURED ON THE KELLY CL ARKSON SHOW APRIL 13th! CRAIG MORGAN has made a name for
himself as a country music icon, TV personality, celebrated outdoorsman, and patriotic Army veteran. One of country music’s best-loved artists, Morgan was inducted into the Grand Ole Opry in 2008 and has charted twenty-five songs on Billboard, thrilling massive crowds with signature hits like “Bonfire,” “Almost Home,” and “That’s What I Love about Sunday.”

eird Tales is one of the greatest brands in existence. Our delivery of the dark and mythical spans over 100 years and thousands of stories. Our work has been to expand Weird Tales far beyond our iconic magazine, and this relationship with Blackstone is an important step in this mission. They are a committed and supportive partner that we are excited to ride into the future with.
—JOHN HARLACHER, Weird Tales Publisher and President
ABOUT WEIRD TALES: Weird Tales is the place where two storytelling concepts meet: speculative and alternative. In 1923, when the magazine was originally founded, those two ideas amounted to the same thing. Weird Tales was launched to showcase writers trying to publish stories so bizarre and far out, no one else would publish them — stories of unearthly dimensions and dark possibilities, gothic seductresses and cosmic monstrosities. Today, Weird Tales carries that mission forward into the 21st century, finding the most talented new writers, artists, and creators whose visions are too incredible to fit within the comfortable little boxes of everyday experience.

May 1941. German paratroopers launch a blitzkrieg from the air against Crete. They are met with fierce defiance, the Greeks fighting back with daggers, pitchforks, and kitchen knives. JOHN J. JACOBSON
CALIFORNIA FEVER SoCal surfer Dolphin Smoote just wanted to earn quick dough for a date with the browneyed beauty… what he got was G-men (and G-women), ghosts, and a Colt-45. John Jacobson’s California Fever is the compelling fusion of mystery, crime, and Southern California beach charm. Top surfer Dolphin Smoote gets more than he bargains for when he works up the nerve to ask out a brown-eyed beauty on a date. The search of quick coin without having to work will always lead a surfer to precarious places, and Dolphin is no exception. With the help of his lovable surfer crew—who often have more to say about stylishness than anything else—Dolphin finds himself between con men, ghosts, an impending storm from the coast of Mexico … and still no money for a second date. Along the ride, Dolphin finds in himself capacity for storytelling that would make P. G. Wodehouse himself chortle with laughter. Though JOHN J. JACOBSON didn’t join the French Foreign Legion after being jilted by a girlfriend, or over his displeasure of missing the last great cattle drive, he has, borrowing Churchill’s phrase, lived a rather variegated life. He was born in Nevada, grew up in the West, surfed big waves in Hawaii, circled the world thrice, survived the sixties and seventies, corporate America, and grad school. Among other degrees he has an MA in Renaissance literature from Claremont Graduate University.

The Cold Hard Light By Christopher Amenta
The Cold Hard Light is a spare and bracing literary debut that tells the story of a new father who falls into the grip of obsession.
“Resonating with a dark disturbing vision, The Cold Hard Light is an ambitious novel. The story, Andrew Harrison’s psychological struggle, is told with insights and nuances. An impressive accomplishment.” — Ha Jin, National Book Award–winning author of Waiting
The novel begins when the man who assaulted Andrew Harrison’s sister is released from prison. Benjamin Williams was barely more than a kid when he was sentenced to eleven years, but it is impossible to know what he has become since. Andrew, nicknamed H, is compelled to learn for himself when his uncle Billy hands him a gun and says to go 5nd the man. As H’s interest in Williams grows, he struggles to keep his world in balance. His hockey career has stalled, his girlfriend suffers from postpartum depression that is neither understood nor diagnosed, and the allure of vengeance threatens to erase his moral self. Set in present-day Boston, The Cold Hard Light explores the drama of modern American urban life, where the poor work gig jobs that cater to the rich, where race can be weaponized, guns are treated like toys, and the desire to blame others trumps the need to understand them. These forces and more weigh upon the characters in this crystalline novel, hurtling them toward an irrevocable conclusion.

Valley of Shadows
SEPTEMBER 20, 2022
By Rudy Ruiz
Award-winning author of The Resurrection of Fulgencio Ramirez A visionary neo-Western blend of magical realism, mystery, and horror, Valley of Shadows sheds light on the dark past of injustice, isolation, and suffering along the US-Mexico border. Solitario Cisneros thought his life was over long ago. He lost his wife, his family, even his country in the late 1870s when the Rio Grande shifted course, stranding the Mexican town of Olvido on the Texas side of the border. He’d made his brooding peace with retiring his gun and badge, hiding out on his ranch, and communing with horses and ghosts. But when a gruesome string of murders and kidnappings ravages the town, pushing its volatile mix of Anglo, Mexican, and Apache settlers to the brink of self-destruction, he feels reluctantly compelled to confront both life, and the much more likely possibility of death, yet again. As Solitario struggles to overcome not only the evil forces that threaten the town but also his own inner demons, he finds an unlikely source of inspiration and support in Onawa, a gifted and enchanting Apache-Mexican seer who champions his cause, daring him to open his heart and question his destiny. As we follow Solitario and Onawa into the desert, we join them in facing haunting questions about the human condition that are as relevant today as they were back then: Can we rewrite our own history and shape our own future? What does it mean to belong to a place, or for a place to belong to a people? And, as lonely and defeated as we might feel, are we ever truly alone? Through luminous prose and soul-searching reflections, Rudy Ruiz transports readers to a distant time and a remote place where the immortal forces of good and evil dance amidst the shadows of magic and mountains. RUDY RUIZ is an award-winning author. His novel, The Resurrection of Fulgencio Ramirez, received two Gold Medals at the 2021 International Latino Book Awards. It was also a finalist for the Western Writers of America Silver Spur Award for Best Contemporary Novel. His shortstory collection Seven for the Revolution captured four International Latino Book Awards, including the Mariposa Prize for Best First Book. In 2017, he garnered the Gulf Coast Prize in Fiction. A bilingual native of the US-Mexico border, he earned his bachelor’s and master’s degrees at Harvard and now resides in San Antonio, Texas, with his wife and children. “A vast panorama of people and places... dramatic moment after dramatic moment in a throbbing tempo.” —New York Herald Tribune on Armageddon
Gideon Zadok arrives in Israel with every intention to research a new book, mend a broken marriage, and improve his dysfunctional family. But as political tensions escalate and his family is evacuated, Zadok asks to follow Israeli paratroopers to secure Mitla Pass and finds himself in the midst of one of the largest global crises of the twentieth century. A sweeping novel of love, passion, and freedom, Mitla Pass stands as an epic look at modern Middle Eastern history and is quite possibly Uris’s most autobiographical work.

“Good Uris beats the best of John Grisham or Tom Clancy any time.” —Fort Worth Star-Telegram, praise for the author
Originally published in 1953, Leon Uris’s Battle Cry is the raw and exciting story of men at war from a legendary American author. This is the story of enlisted men—Marines at the beginning of World War II. They are a rough-and-ready tangle of guys from America’s cities and farms and reservations. Led by a tough veteran sergeant, these soldiers band together to emerge as part of one of the most elite fighting forces in the world. With staggering realizm and detail we follow them into intense battles—Guadalcanal and Tarawa—and through exceptional moments of camaraderie and bravery. Battle Cry does not extol the glories of war but proves itself to be one of the greatest war stories of all time.

“It’s terrific...Don’t miss it.” —Kirkus Reviews (starred review) on Battle Cry
Israel is a land of contrasts—of modern hotels and ancient olive trees; of young girls in slacks and elders with traditional beards. It is a country of harsh desert, lush farmland, sandy beaches, and sun-dappled seas. Israel is the common homeland of the Jew, the Christian, and the Muslim. It is a nation with a living history, a memory of violence and pain, a hope for the future, and a promise in its people. In Exodus Revisited, Leon Uris returns to the scene of his famous bestselling novel, Exodus, which has sold over five million copleis. With power, compassion, and love, he writes a revealing commentary to accompany the sensitive and haunting photographs of Dimitrios Harissiadis.

IRELAND
A Terrible Beauty
The story of Ireland, the Irish, and the Troubles, told by Leon Uris and Jill Uris Jill and Leon Uris came to Ireland looking for answers. Why has Ireland been bled by one internal war after another? How can one country contain such greatness and grief? What they discovered was more than the Ireland of peat fires and pubs, of fabled Irish wit and the haunts of the banshees. What they found was a people— trapped in mutual mistrusts, but with a a courage and kindness that brought them through centuries of bitter occupation and civil dissension, in a land as complexly beautiful as the people themselves. This then is the Urises’ “love song” to the Irish and to Ireland.

RIVER WOMAN, RIVER DEMON A Novel
by Jennifer Givhan When Eva’s husband is arrested for the murder of a friend, she must confront her murky past and embrace her magick to find out what really happened that night on the river. Eva Santos Moon is a burgeoning Chicana artist who practices the ancient, spiritual ways of brujería and curanderisma, but she’s at one of her lowest points—suffering from disorienting blackouts, creative stagnation, and a feeling of disconnect from her magickal roots. When her husband is taken into custody for the shocking murder of their friend, Eva doesn’t know whom to trust—least of all, herself. She soon falls under suspicion as a potential suspect, and her past rises to the surface, dredging up the truth about an eerily similar death from her childhood. Struggling with fragmented memories and self-doubt, an increasingly terrified Eva fears that she might have been involved in both murders. But why doesn’t she remember? Only the dead women know for sure, and they’re coming for her with a haunting vengeance.

BEASTS OF THE EARTH BY JAMES WADE
James Wade, whose first two novels were praised as “rhapsodic” and “haunting,” delivers his most powerful work to date—a chilling parable about the impossible demands of hate and love, trauma and goodness, vividly set in the landscapes of Texas and Louisiana. Beasts of the Earth tells the story of Harlen LeBlanc, a dependable if quiet employee of the Carter Hills High School’s grounds department, whose carefully maintained routine is overthrown by an act of violence. As the town searches for answers, LeBlanc strikes out on his own to exonerate a friend, while drawing the eyes of the law to himself and fending off unwelcome voices that call for a sterner form of justice. Twenty years earlier, young Michael Fischer dreads the return of his father from prison. He spends his days stealing from trap lines in the Louisiana bayou to feed his fanatically religious mother and his cherished younger sister, Doreen. When his father eventually returns, an evil arrives in Michael’s life that sends him running from everything he has ever known. He is rescued by a dying poet and his lover, who extract from him a promise: to be a good man, whatever that may require. Beasts of the Earth deftly intertwines these stories, exploring themes of time, fate, and free will, to produce a revelatory conclusion that is both beautiful and heartbreaking.

In the dirty war of covert operations, they were the government’s most deadly secret weapon—the CIA trained them for one thing and one thing only—to kill swiftly, silently, and mercilessly. Then it turned them loose on the battlefields of Asia, sending them out on missions so ugly that not even the army could be told. But now the war was over. Beak, Rosie, Cowboy, Harry, and Runt were in limbo until their old CIA control sent them back into the hell of Vietnam in search of a man who should be dead. Could five shell-shocked vets become a combat-honed killing machine again? And, if they could, how long would it be before the CIA acted to stop them, to shut them down—for keeps.

Wells to investigate the mysteries of the future. He devised a Jules Verne–worthy method to hibernate in 1899. When accidentally awakened and his life saved by Dr. Amy Winslow in today’s San Francisco, the egoistic, uberBritish, cocaine-addicted, sexist genius is a century out of sync, so his still-astonishing deductions are sometimes laughably or dangerously incorrect. Amy reluctantly becomes his new Watson, perilously involved in a series of bizarre murders being committed by a descendant of Holmes’s late archenemy, Professor Moriarty. The tone is classic, suspenseful Holmes, with refreshing twists of sh-out-of-water humor plus a surprising spark of romance.
KENNETH JOHNSON, creator of iconic, Emmy Award–
winning projects The Bionic Woman, The Incredible Hulk, Alien Nation and his original landmark miniseries V, the highest-rated work of science ction in television history. He received excellent reviews on his previous novels: V: The Second Generation, The Darwin Variant, and The Man of Legends—which was selected by Publishers Weekly as “One of the most anticipated new novels” and became an instant Amazon bestseller ranking Johnson number two on Amazon’s Most Popular Author list, garnering more than four thousand reviews, and selling over one hundred thousand copies in less than a year.

THE WAR MAGICIAN THE MAN WHO CONJURED VICTORY IN THE DESERT
“A RICHLY ENTERTAINING READ.” —SUNDAY TIMES (London)
Based on an extraordinary true story and soon to be a major film produced by and starring Benedict Cumberbatch, The War Magician is the remarkable tale of the man who used the powers of illusion to fight the Nazis.
*COVER ART NOT FINAL
When England went to war against Hitler in 1939 it mobilized its entire military, but there was no place in that army for legendary magician Jasper Maskelyne. Maskelyne was determined to fight using his only weapon: he intended to apply the techniques of popular magic to the battlefield. Initially ignored by leadership, he eventually cajoled his way into the Camouflage Corps and created a new type of warfare. With his small group of artists, he designed and developed ingenious weapons, tricked the Desert Fox into believing there were tanks and battleships where there were none, concealed the Suez Canal, and even successfully “moved” Alexandria Harbor. But it required all his skills to pull off the largest and most complex magic trick in history. soon to be a major film starring

No Gods, No Monsters By Cadwell Turnbull
“Riveting...[A] tender, ferocious book.” —NEW YORK TIMES One October morning, Laina gets the news that her brother has been shot and killed by Boston cops. As creatures from myth and legend come out of the shadows, seeking safety through visibility, their emergence sets off a chain of seemingly unrelated events. Members of a local werewolf pack are threatened. A professor follows a missing friend’s trail to a mysterious secret society. And a young boy with unique abilities seeks refuge in a pro-monster organization. Meanwhile, more people start disappearing, suicides and hate crimes increase, and protests erupt globally.
