It is thanks to the Black Swan community and our partners, that we have had such a successful 2014 season, and why I believe our 2015 season will set a new benchmark. In particular, our partnership with Rio Tinto as Principal Partner has allowed us to provide even more opportunities to emerging artists and writers. Under the direction of Artistic Director Kate Cherry, we are very proud to have developed the Rio Tinto Black Swan Commissions. This program is dedicated to showcasing Western Australian stories, as well as providing access to professional development. It represents a sound investment in the creative future of Western Australia and nurturing the creative leaders of tomorrow.
success to our loyal audience and subscribers, thank you for supporting us and thank you for supporting theatre in Western Australia. The 2015 season is a celebration of everything we love about theatre. A wonderful mix of classic and contemporary, of local and international talent, and of course, gathering together as a community to celebrate art. Mark Barnaba CHAIRMAN
To our partners and stakeholders, I must extend immeasurable gratitude. Your continued support is what allows Black Swan to continue producing artistic work of a worldclass standard. Without the support of our donors, sponsors and, most of all, our audience, none of this would be possible. We owe so much of our

At Black Swan State Theatre Company we bring the ancient wisdom of shared experience to contemporary audiences through modern technology. Innovation is a process that can only flourish with the support and encouragement of our community. In this rapidly changing global environment, it is vital to foster strong creative communities by sharing our stories and seeking to understand the stories of others. Black Swan aspires to engage Western Australians in a diverse range of theatrical experiences as audience and practitioners. With your support, we have built a programme welcoming emerging artists into the Black Swan family, created a group of resident artists to teach and advocate for the values of the company, and recruited two Associate Directors to bring their talents, opinions and insights into company planning. We have continued to delight regional communities with our tours and simulcasts, and our education program is a thriving force throughout the state inspiring all those involved.
This year, we invite you in to a season of surprises. We offer three comedies: the delightful frothiness of Blithe Spirit; the sparkling dark wit of guests at the dinner party from hell in Dinner; and Venus in Fur, a gem of a play that veers between laughter, sex and fantasy at a thrilling pace. Dramas include Glengarry Glen Ross, a modern American classic glittering with prizes and the world premiere of Hannie Rayson’s topical play Extinction. Thanks to Rio Tinto, we also present our first ever play for children, The Red Balloon, starring children and a few lucky adults. Finally, we finish the year with Next to Normal, recently voted the top musical of the 21st Century. Join us for a sassy season of surprises; magic, murder, greed, laughter, music and mayhem. This season holds Black Swan’s trademark style, many faces you will recognise and a few delightful additions. Best of all, in uncertain times, it banishes fear with laughter and brings darkness into the light. Kate Cherry ARTISTIC DIRECTOR

VENUS in Fur BY D AV I D I V E S
A SEXY AND GRIPPING EXPLORATION OF DOMINATION AND POWER – PART COMEDY, PART THRILLER. The play follows Thomas, a New York playwright so fascinated with fiery actress Vanda, he confuses fact with fiction, and becomes her willing slave, or does he? Things take a turn for the strange when Vanda comes to enjoy and abuse her newfound power. Ives' sexually charged comedy was the most produced play in the US in 2014, lauded by Broadway audiences and the subject of a recent film. This quirky take on the intimate relationship between man and woman, is sure to ignite excitement. Can you respect those without power? Can you love those you cannot respect? Venus in Fur is a brilliantly written psychological strip tease that will keeping audiences enraptured until the thrilling conclusion.

She is determined to have everything perfect and has gone to great lengths to prepare the menu, even hiring a waiter just for the occasion. GLENGARRY GLEN ROSS BY D AV I D M A M E T
A MASTER WORK OF MODERN THEATRE ABOUT GREED, DESPERATION AND RUTHLESS AMBITION. Internationally acclaimed and the subject of a critically admired film, David Mamet’s Pulitzer Prize-winning story of salesmen struggling to stay afloat in the cut-throat world of Chicago real estate, is not to be missed. Equal parts snappy dialogue, black humour and verbal abuse, Glengarry Glen Ross follows four real estate agents presented with a dilemma: sell undesirable property to unwilling buyers or find a new job. Ricky Roma is the smooth talker, Shelly "The Machine" Levene is on a bad run, George Aaronow suffers from low self-esteem and Dave Moss is the bigmouth with dreams and schemes. With the office manager, John Williamson, selling prime leads for cash, the four men go to any lengths — including bribery, threats and burglary — to close the deal. BLITHE SPIRIT WARRING WIVES, LAUGHTER, MAGIC AND MAYHEM – YOU’LL NEVER GET ENOUGH OF IT IN THIS FARCICAL PLAY FULL OF SPECTRAL ACTION. While researching his next novel, Charles Condomine employs the services of a clairvoyant to see whether it is possible to contact souls in the afterlife. Unfortunately for Charles, the psychic summons the ghost of his dead wife, Elvira. It’s soon clear that the morally untidy Elvira wishes to reunite with her husband, much to the dismay of Charles’ new (and living) wife, Ruth. Widely considered to be Noël Coward’s greatest work, Blithe Spirit treats its grim subject matter with gratifying frivolity, offering a playful look at what lies beyond the grave, and what happens when love comes back to haunt us. Extinction BY H A N N I E R AY S O N
THE DEATH OF AN ENDANGERED TIGER QUOLL IS THE CRITICAL BACKDROP TO AN AUSTRALIAN STORY ABOUT OUR VERY SURVIVAL. Andy Dixon is a vet who believes strongly in preserving the environment and our natural resources. When his lover, the determined conservation biologist Dr Piper Ross, agrees to undertake research paid for by the CEO of a mining company, he begins to question her methods and his feelings toward her. Little does she know that Andy has been diagnosed with a rare illness, and his life is in as much danger as the species she is trying to save. From the mind of Helpmann Award-winning Australian playwright, Hannie Rayson (Hotel Sorrento, Life Without George), comes the world premiere of Extinction, a unique drama with a timely and important message of environmental awareness and conservation. NEXT TO NORMAL is presented through special arrangement with Hal Leonard Australia Pty Ltd on behalf of Music Theatre International.
A PULITZER AND TONY AWARD-WINNING ROCK MUSICAL THAT HAS ENTHRALLED AUDIENCES ON BROADWAY AND WILL BE A FIRST FOR PERTH. Meet Diana Goodman, loving wife and mother who wants nothing more than for her husband Dan and their two children to get along like one big happy family. But in a seemingly perfect suburban neighbourhood, their struggles, like most families, are anything but normal. They test and mock each other at every turn – but how are they meant to cope when one of them suffers from hallucinations? Filled with music, fun and pathos, this play revolutionised the genre and is the most critically acclaimed musical since Rent. Featuring songs like “My Psychopharmacologist and I”, “Didn't I See This Movie?”, and “Superboy and The Invisible Girl” – this world-class production is the prescription you need for the ultimate in contemporary music entertainment. EMERGING ARTISTS
We have programmed two exciting and ambitious artistic collaborations as part of our second year of the Black Swan Lab. Venus in Fur by David Ives, part of the FRINGE WORLD Festival 2015 and The Red Balloon by Albert Lamorisse, with a stage adaptation by Hilary Bell, part of the 2015 AWESOME Festival.
A critical component of our creative agenda is to provide professional pathways for emerging artists, including high potential directors, designers, writers, composers and actors. Black Swan supports them as they work towards establishing themselves on the national stage.
The Black Swan Lab allows emerging artists to work with us in a comprehensive and supportive environment. It allows us to develop works that may be suitable for future regional touring.
This program provides access to training, mentoring and state-of-the-art theatre practice, to facilitate professional development within the realms of a state theatre company. It gives emerging artists the opportunity to work with Artistic Director Kate Cherry and our experienced creative teams, who mentor them throughout the year.
If you have an appetite for new plays and are a theatre lover keen to witness emerging artists grow and flex their muscles, then these Black Swan Lab productions are perfect for you.
RESIDENT ARTISTS IO TINTO BLACK SWAN R COMMISSIONS This program, supported by our Principal Partner Rio Tinto, enables Black Swan to commission Australia’s leading playwrights to develop new works. These works will reveal to Western Australians, stories about ourselves and showcase our work to the world. Commissioned works presented in 2014 included The House on The Lake by Aidan Fennessy and Dust by Suzie Miller. In 2015, we will present another commission in the adaptation of The Red Balloon by Hilary Bell.
The Resident Artists Program targets a range of experienced artists, including directors, designers, writers and composers, looking to advance their careers. The program provides opportunities for mentoring and interaction with Artistic Director Kate Cherry and our artistic team, as well as significant profiling and showcasing opportunities. Resident Artists also provide support and mentoring to the emerging artists.

EDUCATION We are committed to supporting educators in developing an appreciation of the performing arts. Our aim is to be accessible to all school communities with selected performances, workshops, quality resources and value adding experiences that support and complement the Western Australian and Australian curriculum. Heavily subsidised student ticket prices and school subscription packages are offered in addition to work experience internships and high school and tertiary student ambassador programs. Each year, we also develop a special inschool and regional touring production with an accompanying workshop. Local artists Ella Hetherington and Marko Jovanovic will develop Shadowboxing, for presentation by Black Swan in the second half of 2015. Shadowboxing explores what happens when we define ourselves by the opinions of others rather than who we are. In a digital landscape full of answers to unasked questions – Shadowboxing offers questions truly worth contemplating. Suitable for ages 11-17 years, Shadowboxing will tour schools and regional areas in Western Australia in 2015. PRINCIPAL PARTNER

REGIONAL ENGAGEMENT As part of our regional engagement strategy, we aim to develop long-term, reciprocal relationships with regional and remote Western Australia, embed theatre in the lives of all Western Australians, regardless of location, and support vitality, pride and strength in regional and remote communities. Underpinning this strategy is the appointment of regional ambassadors, who act as a conduit between the company and their communities in the delivery of live broadcasts, regional tours and other community engagement activities. The 2015 Live Broadcast will be Noël Coward’s Blithe Spirit in late July.
