DIP INTO TEXAS’ LAID BACK BEACH CULTURE Beach hopping isn’t always the first thing that springs to mind when thinking about Texas. But with 600 miles of sparkling coastline, dotted with quaint seaside towns, incredible views, and of course soft sand beaches and warm waters, it’s a little slice of beach paradise. One of the States most iconic beach hubs, Corpus Christi is located in the southern region of Texas’ gulf coast and is a mecca for beach-goers and nature lovers alike. The city’s main stretch of sand - North Beach - is located right in the heart of town and is home to some of the freshest seafood joints in Texas. To get away from the hustle and bustle, head to Padre Island National Seashore and behold one of Texas’ natural wonders and the largest remaining natural barrier island in the world. Covering 130,000 acres, this spectacular expanse is home to a variety of wildlife such as the endangered Ridley turtle or the rare Mango hummingbird. Barbecuing in Texas isn’t just a way to spend a soggy summers evening, it’s a way of life, a mastered art, and a passion that’s worth discovering on its infamous BBQ trail. Veggies be warned, when it comes to Texan cuisine ‘carne’ is king. And with each region offering up a staggering range of curing, smoking, and grilling methods it can be mind-boggling to know where to start in the quest to find the ultimate Texasstyle barbecue. Luckily that’s where the Texas Barbecue Trail comes in. The trail is a semi-loop, starting an hour’s drive northeast of Austin and making your way southbound that takes in four sleepy, picture perfect towns; Taylor, Elgin, Luling and Lockhart. BBQ traditionalists claim that the state’s best barbecue comes from central Texas, an area settled in the 19th century by European immigrants who brought their oldcountry meat-smoking and sausage-making traditions with them. We won’t argue with that. With so much on offer, it’s hard to pick one joint to dine in. We recommend that you try a bit of everything at a selection of our favourites...

Louie Mueller’s Barbecue in Taylor still stands just as it did in back in 1906. The beef brisket is served swaddled in butcher paper with Texas-style accompaniments of spongy white bread, pickles and onion slices.
for something different Southside Market & Barbeque in Elgin is renowned for its “hot guts” — an all-beef sausage, best washed down with a Big Red soda.
for flavour Black’s Barbecue in Lockhart is famed for its garlic and jalapeño cheese that enhances the flavour of its sausages.
for no frills The City Market in Luling serves only two meals mastered to perfection: brisket and pork ribs.

TEXAS COUNTRY AND HONKY TONK A sub-genre of American Country music, the outlaw Cowboy tunes mix with the smooth tones of Folk, with guitar providing the main ingredient to Texas Country. Piano, fiddles and harmonicas also give the music its upbeat tonality, not to mention the vocals, with lyrics leading the song through the vagaries of outlaw life. Live performances are a real treat, and really easy to find in Texas. Pull on your Texan wares (Cowboy hats and boots at the very least), and join in at one of the specialist Honky Tonk bars for an experience that is wholly and uniquely Texan.

ROCK AND ROLL In the 1950s, one of the most exciting singers the world has ever seen emerged from Lubbock in the northwest of Texas – Buddy Holly. The day one of the pioneers of Rock and Roll passed away is often referred to in popular culture as ‘the day the music died’, but this monumental loss certainly wasn’t the end of Texan Rock and Roll. Soon to come were musical luminaries like Roy Orbison and Janis Joplin to make sure the music kept rocking and rolling out of Texas.

CADILLAC RANCH
A state as large as Texas (it’s bigger than France don’t you know?) has a lot to offer even the most seasoned of travellers. So once you’ve feasted upon its unique cuisine and delved into Texas’ distinguishing cowboy culture take a look at its artsy side, its surfing meccas, and of course no trip would be complete without a real Texan football game.
Not only confined to the museums and galleries of Texas, art has been popping up in some unusual locations across the state. If you happen to find yourself making your way across Route 66 heading west of Amarillo, be sure to keep your eyes peeled for the Cadillac Ranch, an impressive installation piece on the side of the highway. Built by a group of hippies from San Francisco who go by the name of The Ant Farm, Cadillac Ranch is said to pay tribute to the evolution of the Cadillac tail fin and was designed to baffle the locals. Back in 1974, ten Cadillacs were driven into the middle of the desert, half-buried, nose-down, in the dirt, supposedly at the same angle as the Great Pyramid of Giza. Today the art instalment has become a ritual site for those who travel the ‘Mother Road’. It sees art-anarchists from across the globe make their mark on the bizarre art form, so come armed with a can of spray paint and get ready to create your master-piece (that is, until someone else sprays over it). blacktomato.com

SURFING IN GALVESTON
A city that rarely does anything by halves, Dallas plays host to one of the USA’s biggest sporting teams, The Dallas Cowboys. One of the most iconic teams in the NFL, the fans are die hard and The Cowboys Stadium is one of the most opulent in the country. Costing over a billion dollars to construct, it served as a super-bowl venue in 2009, as well as hosting boxing, basketball and rodeo events and Dallas’s biggest concert events. Imbibe the true sporting finesse of Texan life by taking a look at what’s on at the stadium.
When you think of ‘hanging-ten’ stateside, it’s usually the strong swells of California’s Pacific Coast that first springs to mind. Think again. Galveston - or G-Town as it’s affectionately dubbed - is tucked away in the northernmost corner of Texas’ coastline, and is known for its surf scene both in and out the water. Thanks to the winds from the gulf-coast and a system of sandbars and shallow waters the waves are usually small and gentle: perfect for beginners. To unearth the best surf spots it’s best to ask the locals. Or to get started, head to one of the many board-rentals that line the shore and make your way to Flagship Hotel Pier, a spot where the waves are consistent and there’s always an audience to cheer you on.

no. 29 The Texan cowboy is symbolic to the state’s image: a distinctive social subculture, a unique style of dress and a lifetime’s worth of acquired riding skills – on both horse and cattle.
R T E G D N I A ,
CLOTHING Spending five minutes in the scorching Texan sun can take its toll, let alone a whole day on horseback, so it is important to be correctly dressed. Aesthetics meets ergonomics with the cowboy hat. There are many different styles, but the popular wide rimmed, pastel coloured hat will keep a cowboy shaded from the baking midday sun, as well as setting them apart in the world of cowboy fashion. Cowboy boots, known for high heels and high rise sides, are also designed with practicalities in mind: the heel stops the shoe from slipping out of the stirrups, and the high top protects against the elements. The boots may also feature detachable spurs on the heels, made infamous by the wild west on the silver screen. Finally, denim is de rigueur, with sturdy jeans and a thick comfy jacket needed to keep the dust off and protect from the elements and animals. A couple of optional extras are the belt with a chunky buckle, some deer skin gloves and a red patterned neckerchief to protect a cowboy from breathing in too much dust.

DANCING AND MUSIC Country and Western music and dancing are synonymous with cowboy culture, and are the best ways of socialising in Texas. “Kicker dancing” as the locals call it occurs in many of the bars. Another common style is square and line dancing, ideal for anyone too shy to dance with a partner. The musical themes often feature references to cowboy culture, and the style has also taken influence from the genres of big band, boogie, bluegrass, jazz and rockabilly, leading to an amalgamation of sounds that can only be experienced by visiting an authentic bar. Glide your way onto the dance floor and follow the lead of the others as they scoot and shimmy with effortless elegance.
RODEO Rodeo cowboys are now professionals in their own right, but the original working cowboys (as they are now known) would work on ranches and then display their skills at the rodeo show. Despite all the clichés, attending a rodeo is one of the most exhilarating and authentic events you can experience in Texas. Most large towns in the state will hold regular rodeos that take place in the town’s bull ring. The rodeo activities include a number of tasks that cowboys need to know for working on the ranch. Competitions like calf roping, where the cowboy on horseback chases after a calf, lassos it, and ties it up are key skills needed for working on the ranch, but others like barrel racing (where riders race a slalom course between barrels) and bull riding (where the Cowboy attempts to cling on to a bucking bull) are just for a bit of adrenalin-pumping fun. During the intermission there will be a heap of western themed entertainment acts, music and even trick riding to keep the audience occupied.

THE ESSENTIAL FACTS TO GET YOU TO TEXAS
Whether it’s outdoor or indoor pursuits you’re seeking, there is no bad time to visit Texas, as each season brings certain draws. During fall (September – November), the sometimes oppressive heat of summer is gone, making outdoor activities much more pleasant. It’s the perfect climate for festivals and events, a number of which are held across the state. For nature lovers, spring (March – May) is the best time to head to Texas, when the state blossoms with an abundance of flora and fauna. Although hot, summer (June – August) is a great time for all types of water sports, and we recommend heading to Texas’ coastal resorts for some beach time.
For non-US citizens planning to travel to the United States travel authorisation is required as part of the Visa Waiver Program (VWP). Not to worry, this is simple and can be done online through a registration system known as ESTA. It will be valid for a period of two years or until the date on which your passport expires, whichever comes first. Without an ESTA you could be refused travel.

no. 34 A FEW FUN FACTS TEXAS IS POPULARLY KNOWN AS THE LONE STAR STATE. DR PEPPER WAS INVENTED IN WACO, TEXAS IN 1885. THE ARMADILLO IS THE OFFICIAL STATE MAMMAL. THE WORD “TEXAS” COMES FROM THE HASINAI INDIAN WORD “TEJAS” MEANING “FRIENDS” OR “ALLIES”. THE FIRST WORD SPOKEN ON THE MOON WAS “HOUSTON” ON JULY 20TH 1969.
PLANE
MORE SPECIES OF BATS LIVE IN TEXAS THAN IN ANY OTHER PART OF THE UNITED STATES.
Due to the state’s size, air travel within Texas is advised if you’re tight on time. Several airlines such as United Airlines offer cheap inter-Texas flights between cities at competitive rates.
THE WORLD’S LARGEST (AND OLDEST) RATTLESNAKE ROUNDUP IS HELD EVERY MARCH IN SWEETWATER, TEXAS.
CAR The ultimate way to see the state is via Texas’ roads and highways that weave between its main cities made for intrepid road trips. All major cities and large towns have car rental facilities on offer. For those looking to carry on their stateside adventure, Texas’ central location means it is well-served from other points in the U.S. by the United States Interstate Highway system. BUS For the more adventurous (and more frugal) passengers, the Greyhound bus is a cheap and convenient way to travel around Texas. Bus routes serve all but the tiniest towns, though it may take several transfers and twice as long as it would by car.
As with the rest of the US, tipping is a part of life throughout the state of Texas. As a social custom it is heavily practiced, and for that reason it is expected. Restaurants expect a minimum of 15% gratuity, with 20% sufficient for truly great service.
