Introduction: Can a small island make a big impact on a global issue? A warm welcome to our 2021 Annual Convention, which will explore the global issue of sustainability and how integral it is to Guernsey’s global brand and economic prosperity. I am delighted that, ahead of his participation in COP26, Tom Rivett-Carnac will be speaking about one of the most pressing sustainability issues of our time – climate change – and the role that Guernsey can play in the race to net zero. The core of this event will discuss the opportunities we have locally to make an impact. Three years ago our keynote speaker, Simon Anholt, discussed Guernsey’s place in the world as a ‘Nation Brand’. This year, we are further developing this concept by applying a sustainability lens to the six key elements of his ‘Nation Brand ’ Hexagon. This comprises: Investment, People, Tourism, Culture & Heritage, Governance and Exports. All six elements contribute to the overall economic health of a nation and, when explored together

through a sustainability lens, have the potential to move the dial on climate change and turbo-charge Guernsey’s future prosperity. We also have an inspiring keynote speaker – leading environmental economist Dr Matthew Agarwala – who will be discussing the ‘Wealth Economy’ project. This looks beyond GDP to identify and measure the wide range of assets that will be the key determinants of a nation’s future prosperity. This approach will be essential to measuring whether we have achieved the goals we have set out above. Making a real impact will only be possible if every one of us plays a role in achieving these goals. We will therefore be asking all attendees to create their own personal – and professional – manifesto, drawing on the three ‘asks’ that will be presented at the end of each hexagon segment. The challenges of climate change have never been more pressing, and just a few actions from every one of us can make a real difference. Finally, I would like to thank the support from an incredible line-up of sponsors. Carey Olsen has kindly been the headline sponsor for this event for the past 16 years, and we are delighted that so many other local organisations are helping the IoD hold this flagship event where we will be debating such an important topic for Guernsey’s long-term prosperity. Headline Sponsor Message After an absence last year, it is great to see the IoD Convention is back in 2021, as one of the business highlights of the year. The world is now a very different place since we last got together in 2019. No one could have predicted what 2020 would bring and few can be sure how the world will recover from the pandemic as we approach the dawn of 2022. As we know, Guernsey is exceptionally good at reacting and dealing with the challenges it encounters and has a well-earned reputation for punching above its weight. Our handling of the pandemic has put us in the spotlight for being a great place to live and work, something all of us in this room have known for a long time. We are all exceptionally lucky to call Guernsey home, and it is up to us to ensure our island remains a viable and sustainable place to live for future generations. It also probably explains why Simon Anholt and his ‘Nation Brand’ concept produced such a lot of discussion around what Guernsey could become or do to make its mark in the world. After all, with everything the world has recently been through, the timing could not be more appropriate for us to revisit and examine the six key areas of his Index. Let us also not forget that environmental, social and governance (ESG) issues are now firmly on the corporate agenda, with the mandate for change in this area being supported by a growing number of global investors who want their investments to create a positive difference as well as profit. At Carey Olsen, we support many grassroots projects and global impact investors. We also work with asset managers, fund managers, institutional investors, investment banks, private equity houses, family offices, charities, sovereign wealth funds and HNWIs on a range of sustainable initiatives. We therefore have a real appreciation of the implications around governance and compliance processes associated with sustainability projects. It is why we are very pleased to once again to be the lead sponsor of the IoD Annual Convention in Guernsey. The organising committee has come up with an impressive speaker line-up who will cover a lot of ground this evening. Congratulations to them for putting on this event which will tackle such important issues. We hope you all have an informative and enjoyable evening. Russell Clark, Carey Olsen

Speaker Sponsor Deloitte is committed to creating a more sustainable, responsible and lasting future. Today’s climate crisis urges us to rethink and reinvent our economy. Business needs to change to meet higher expectations of sustainability and Deloitte is well equipped to guide organisations through this transition. To do our part to help the world achieve the goals of the Paris Agreement, Deloitte has launched WorldClimate, our strategy to drive responsible climate choices within our organisation and beyond. We recognise that change starts within. Deloitte must set and meet higher standards for itself, empowering our professionals and connecting with our broader ecosystem to create solutions that facilitate the transition to a low-carbon economy. Deloitte LLP has the broadest and deepest range of skills of any business advisory organisation. The company provides audit, tax, consulting and financial advisory services, bringing world-class capabilities and high-quality services to clients. In Guernsey, Deloitte delivers audit, tax and advisory services to many leading businesses in the jurisdiction and beyond. Deloitte’s offices in the Channel Islands, Gibraltar and the Isle of Man have recently joined forces to create a single audit and advisory offering across the four jurisdictions. Deloitte is unique in that all four of these offices are part of Deloitte UK, meaning that the firm’s clients have always been able to tap into over 22,000 professionals. The Guernsey firm is also committed to Deloitte’s 5 Million Futures initiative which aims to help five million people get to where they want to be, through access to education and employment. Locally, Deloitte has made a three-year commitment to GROW Ltd, whose function is to provide training and a sheltered work environment in horticulture for people with a learning disability.

Programme In a break from the format of previous Conventions, we will be delivering a series of short TED-style talks that explore the six key areas of Simon Anholt’s ‘Nation Brand’ index through a sustainability lens: Governance This session will focus on the critical role that data and disclosure will play in underpinning our credibility on the journey to net zero. Transparency – and the provision of clear and comparable data – must be the foundation upon which a nation builds both its key policies and its climate change strategy. How can we ensure we are capturing – and acting on – the right data? Culture & Heritage This ‘soft power’ is at the core of a country’s brand and is an area where Guernsey has much to offer. Guernsey is a place where we can truly integrate government, business, community and outcomes, and where we have a blueprint opportunity that is relevant beyond our shores. How can we bring all of this together to help Guernsey punch above its weight in this area? Exports We attach financial values to many assets in the Bailiwick but are yet to assign a value to our finite natural resources - which our economic activity and wellbeing depend on. Viewing nature as an asset and putting it on the same balance sheet as other resources is essential to ensuring their protection and longevity. So what natural resources could Guernsey take advantage of – and how can we audit, quantify, protect and conserve them?

Programme continued... Investment This segment will address how important the sustainable investment sector is in the race to net zero. We will hear from Keith Driver of Sustainable Development Capital LLP, which finances and develops clean energy and decentralised energy infrastructure projects globally, and Jeremy Alun-Jones, Group Chief Operating Officer at ADM Capital, whose Cibus Fund was the first Guernsey Green Fund to be launched. Josephine Bush, ‘We Are Guernsey’s’ strategic adviser for green and sustainable finance, will explore how Guernsey can further develop its role as a leader in green and sustainable finance. People This segment will examine the importance of human behaviour and ’people power’ in creating a sustainable, resilient economy. Matthew Bell OBE will discuss the tangible benefits for businesses of incorporating a sustainable approach into their culture and business model. Lindsay de Sausmarez will look at how individuals can move the dial on sustainability and climate change, specifically in relation to the Bailiwick’s top three carbon emitters: energy, waste and transport. Lindsay will explore where we should be focusing our efforts in these areas in order to create a more sustainable ‘circular’ economy. Tourism This segment will view the island’s tourism brand through a biodiversity and sustainability lens. How can Guernsey benefit from an eco-tourism boom whilst treading lightly on the island’s environment? Is carbon-neutral tourism possible, and are we closer than we think to becoming a popular destination for anyone wanting to explore nature whilst preserving our fragile world?

Menu Care has been taken to provide seasonal, local produce (wherever possible) to support local growers and meet our sustainability objectives. The celeriac and parsnips in the vegetarian option are both locally grown. Due to limited local supply, the beef will be a mixture of Guernsey and UK-sourced meat from small farms that have outdoor-reared, grass-fed cattle to minimise its carbon footprint. The potatoes and cream are all locally produced.

Sustainability Considerations The IoD organising committee has taken great care to ensure the sustainability theme of this year’s Convention has been carried through into the organisation of the event. This includes: • A ’10-mile meal’ menu that focuses on local and seasonal produce to support local growers and suppliers and reduce travel miles. • Where UK beef has been used to supplement the local beef supply, it has been sourced from small farms with a low-carbon footprint that have outdoor-reared, grass-fed herds. • A wine list sourced from the UK, France and Italy to reduce travel miles, and from vineyards producing wine sustainably and/or organically. • Provision of only one wine glass per person reducing the need to wash an additional 484 glasses and minimising water use. • The still water is being supplied by Guernsey Water in refillable and recyclable glass bottles. • No printed material on the tables and the table plan is being displayed on a plasma screen to reduce waste from the event. • One speaker has travelled to Guernsey solely for the purpose of attending the event; all others have been pre-recorded or are already on-island to fulfil other work commitments. • We have encouraged our sponsors and table hosts to consider the environmental impact of any gifts they have chosen for this evening’s event. • Where possible, we have reduced single-use branding items and we thank all of our event sponsors for their understanding and cooperation as we strive to minimise the impact of our annual flagship event.

The IoD Director of the Year awards celebrate leadership talent, success and achievement. This year, Guernsey is searching for its first Directors of the Year who will then be entered into the 2022 national IoD awards. The combined impact of the Covid pandemic and Brexit meant that 2020 produced exceptionally tough operating conditions for our local businesses. This forced directors to reassess their business models and respond at speed with bold, innovative decisions. These monumental efforts deserve recognition. Entries were welcomed from all sectors and organisations, from directors in established companies and innovative start-ups, to family businesses, SMEs, NEDs and the third sector. The judges were Stuart Falla MBE, Carol Goodwin, Roy McGregor, Gordon Wilson and Charlotte Denton. All are experienced directors across a variety of sectors. The winners of this prestigious award will be announced at the beginning of the second half of the Annual Convention. Sponsored by

GROW Ltd GROW, Guernsey’s Rural Occupational Workshop, has been training and mentoring adults with learning difficulties or disabilities at its St Sampson’s vinery site for 37 years. This month marked a momentous occasion in the charity’s history when they relocated to temporary accommodation while their permanent site is completely redeveloped. Whilst training has, to date, focused on horticulture and some woodworking and carpentry, the redevelopment will provide additional facilities to train the crew, as attendees are known, in retail and hospitality, equipping many of them to move with skills and confidence into employment in commercial sectors. GROW’s ambitious plans come with a price tag of between £2.5-£3m. Having achieved their target of reaching the half way point by this month, demolition work has begun. However GROW still needs to raise over £1m to complete the work. Please support their ‘Be a Pane’ campaign or talk to Marguerite or Eddie about becoming a COG – Champion of GROW. Directors of Tomorrow The Directors of Tomorrow initiative is sponsored by the Ana Leaf Foundation. It aims to inspire young people to become the island’s future leaders and provides unique experiences to help motivate students to achieve their goals, including management shadowing and student tables at the mid-term debate and Annual Convention. Ten students from the island’s sixth forms and College of Further Education with an interest in business and current affairs are selected by their teachers to attend the Annual Convention. Following tonight’s event the students will each author a review in any written, visual or audio media (blog, vlog, infographic, etc.) summing up the evening and expressing their views on the topics discussed. These reviews are then judged by the IoD committee and trustees of the Ana Leaf Foundation, with the winner announced in the local media. Education is very close to the Ana Leaf Foundation’s heart. The foundation supports a number of philanthropic initiatives across the Channel Islands focused on enhancing the future for younger people through educational opportunities.
