A FEW WORDS FROM THE EDITOR-IN-CHIEF

Welcome to our Black 2 Business Commemorative Issue

Instead of putting out another traditional Black History Month issue, this month and celebrating the accomplishments of those who came before us during the shortest month of the year, we decided to celebrate our Black-Owned Businesses in Westchester County and surrounding areas that we can use all year long. Westchester County is touted among America’s wealthiest counties. But they don’t talk about the poverty, homelessness, systematic racism and injustice. Black Westchester’s purpose is not only to address the political process that affects the everyday lives of communities of color in Westchester County. BW’s mission has also been to shine a light on the brilliant culture, morals, values and elegant lifestyle of Black people. It’s time to change the narrative on how Black people are perceived in media. And so we composed this Black 2 Business issue to spotlight and list many of the Black-Owned Businesses is Westchester, especially the small Black Businesses and Entrepreneurs!

Black Dollars - Every Chance You Get, Put Your Dollar In Another Black Hand

This Black 2 Business Commemorative Issue is an economic call-to-action for the Black community to Reduce, Recycle, Reuse, and Reclaim resources in our community. Recycle The Black Dollar ecosystem allows us to embrace the brilliance of us, the excellence of us, the creativity of us, the strength of us, and the power of us.

We can shout at the top of our voices that Black Lives Matter, but if we are not talking about economic development of the African American community by encouraging the support of Black businesses, we are just talking to hear ourselves talking. Protesting is important! Fighting for justice is Important! Fighting systemic racism is important! But what they do not want you to know, what they do not want you to talk about and realize is the importance of Recycling Black Dollars and Supporting Black Businesses.

While we complain about the economic conditions, we have to take a long hard look at our in- volvement as we give our money to those who take our money out of the community. Willingly giving away our money who do not invest in our communities and in many cases do not care about us. We have the power to change that by finding and supporting our Black Businesses and Recycling Our Black Dollars.

Many people often contacted us looking for a Black Attorney, a Black Accountant, a Black Real- tor, a Black Restuarant, Black Event Planner, Photographer, etc. So we put together this issue as sort of a Black Business Directory so we can all patronize Black Business in Westchester County and the surrounding area. While this is far from a complete directory of every Black- Owned Business, we also started a new section called Black To Business on the website following the shutdown during the pandemic. In this section, we will highlight many Black-Owned Businesses (BOBs). We decided to releases this issue listing as many Black-Owned Busi- nesses in one place

While it was impossible to list every local Black-Owned Business (BOB) in our Black 2 Business edition of the newspaper, we reached out to the staff and several supporters and readers to let us know their favorite BOBs. Our goal was to list as many black-owned businesses, located in Westchester County and surrounding areas for the holiday season. Our hope was to offer a free listing of many Black Businesses to spend your hard own dollars. Especially our smaller BOB’s and entrepreneurs that are not known and who do not have the advertising budget to market themselves to the community on a larger scale.

Black people in the United States make up one of the biggest consumer markets in the world. Black people spend over $1 trillion a year. This is huge. We spend so much money and still are seen as less than human by so many. But why do we continue to spend our money with those who do not care about us? What they do not want you to know is we can literally change the economics by recycling our dollars in our communities like other communities do. But its going to take all of us.

Our money has made people rich over and over again. That is power. We have more power than we understand and our dollar is the biggest tool. With such a tremendous spending power we can change the climate of the world towards us if we use it. We need to use our dollars to empower ourselves economically. There are tons and tons of black businesses that we need to funnel our dollars into and support.

We shout Black Lives Matter and fight to put an end to police brutality, qualified immunity, healthcare inquality, led poisoned water, discrimination in the workplace, or being called racial slurs. But we need to also stop making other people rich who don’t care when little black chil- dren are killed by the police in the park and instead make someone who uplift us in our community rich. The more money we have and keep in our community the more we will be able to do. By recycling our Black Dollars we can help support candidates who have our cares and concerns in mind and use that same Black Dollar to help get out of office those who are not concerned with our issues

Do you know there are Black Farmers, Black-owned hair care product lines, Black-owned restaurants and personal chefs, Black-owned clothing lines and stores, Black Owned fitness centers and personal trainers, Black-owned auto repair shops and mobile auto glass repair companies, Black-owned printers and graphic artists, Black-owned marketing and consultant firms etc. Every type of business you can think about, there is one owned by a black person. It is important for us to not only buy from these businesses, but to tell people about them. Brag about them. Show people they can switch over to a new place to get their smoothies or blue jeans from. We have to empower each other and the best way to has always been through word of mouth. We need to start with those in our cities and in Westchester County, then work our way to our surrounding areas.

So lets stop just celebrating the accomplishments of the Greenwood District in Tulsa, Oklaho- ma known as Black Wall Street and honor their sacrifices and recycle our Black Dollars today? We complain about what we do not have, how about supporting what we do have and empower others to build Black-owned businesses in our community. And history has shown us when we support OUR businesses, others outside OUR community will too.

Everyone has a part to play, this is us playing our part!

So lets get BLACK 2 BUSINESS!

While it was impossible to list every local Black Owned Business (BOB) we reached out to the staff and several supporters and readers to let us know their favorite BOB, our goal was to as many black owned businesses, located in Westchester County and surrounding areas for the holiday season. We hope this issue offers a free listing of many Black Businesses to spend your hard own dollars. As a Black Business ourself, we believe it is important to our community that we support Our Businesses and recycle Our Dollars as many times as possible before it leaves the community like others do. So while we think it is very important to Our Economy to support all BOBs, Black Westchester worked hard on this issue to provide a list of businesses we suggest you check out and support. So to celebrate Black History Month we created this BLACK 2 BUSINESS commemorative edition to help circulate the Black Dollar by patronizing businesses that you find in our February 2022 issue of Black Westchester.

Black History Month may be celebrated in the month of Febraury but Black History is 365/24/7 and one way we can celebrate is by supporting Black-Owned Businesses all year long.

Did you know there are about eight million minority-owned businesses in the United States, according to the Census Bureau. Of these, about 2.5 million are owned by African-Americans. African-American-owned firms account for about 10% of the approximately 27 million in total of U.S. businesses. Here’s a comprehensive shopping guide of some of the Black-Owned Businesses (BOB), personal services, entreprenaurs, consumer goods that are all black-owned and operated in Westchester County and the surrounding area, that we feel you should know about. We created an issue, you can hold on to and use all year around. The one thing we want you to get from our issue is “Never stop supporting black business owners.” Make your dollars and your voice heard by supporting locally owned Black Businesses.

“Black-owned business have long been a staple in the Black community providing jobs, economic security and somewhere for us to go and feel seen and safe,” Black Lives Matter co-founder Patrisse Cullors said in a statement. “In these uncertain times, we need these places more than ever.”

Mother Jones reported on a study that found that the 100 richest U.S. citizens control about as much wealth as all of the nation’s 42 million plus African-Americans.

One of the African-American owned businesses I thought of when, I came up with the idea to do this Black 2 Business Edition, was Harmony Designs. Located on South Fourth Avenue in Mount Vernon, but when you walk in the door you feel like you are in the Village or maybe even Beverly Hills.

It’s hard to believe this is in the city of Mount Vernon. As a Mount Vernon resident, this is in no way a knock against my city, but Robin transformed this shoppe on the southside into something you would expect in a much more affluent community. It brings just a touch of class on a two-block urban shopping area ‘The Ave’ that was once the desired place to shop for urban fashion for the rest of the county but now contains mainly hair and nail salons, barbershops, urban eateries and a few 99 cent stores. This small boutique type establishment could be anywhere else, but it was important for Mrs. Myers to do business in the heart of the city of Mount Vernon. That is why I selected Harmon Design to be the first spotlight.

Kelly Denise Events is an event planning & design company based in Mount Vernon. The company specializes in weddings and social events, and offers a wide array of services. Weddings, baby showers, retirement parties, even dinner parties and corporate events are all within the scope of this dynamic company.

Kelly Denise Gardner, Founder and Chief Executive Officer of KDE, grew up in Chesapeake, Virginia and started coordinating hair shows with Nesta Felix while she was in college. That led to fashion shows, homecomings and later, about three years ago, Ms. Gardner opened her own company to help people bring their event visions into reality.

Kelly has been in the event planning business for over 10 years. She brings to your event an extensive network of vendors, a depth of sponsors and a background in planning everything from baby showers to lavish weddings and large conferences. Event planning is her passion, and this shows in her attention to details and cares for your vision and budget.

She says the key is having a plan. “I become a part of their planning process.” says Gardner, “We talk about what they are trying to accomplish, we talk about having a budget and then we figure out how to make it happen. One of those recent clients was the daughter of Bishop W. Darin Moore, President of the AME Zion Church Board of Bishops. She called on Kelly Denise Events to plan her wedding with 250 guests. This was a fairly elaborate affair, involving location scouting, sketching designs for decor items, catering, seating arrangements, travel arrangements and extensive logistics. Gardner’s team delivered it all, even greeting out of town guests at the airport to absolutely guarantee a smooth transition to overnight accommodations.

Not every event is a blockbuster. Gardner will take small events and make them fabulous too. “The glamour is fine, but you really don’t need ALL of it to have a great wedding or any other kind of event,” says Gardner. “I would rather have clients leave with some money left in their pocket.” Whether the budget is modest, or bold, Kelly Denise Events will be creative, take away your stress and make your event into a blast.

FROM PRISON TO PLATINUM – THE STORY OF JOHNNIE BUNTING JR.

Johnnie Bunting Jr., is the proud new owner of the Platinum Hand Car Wash located at 40 W. Lincoln Avenue in Mount Vernon New York. His story leading up to this is quite an interesting and very inspiring one.

Like many inner-city youth, Johnnie ran the streets in his younger years. His youthful indescretions caught up with him but he did not allow that to be the end of his story.

Johnnie was arrested at the age of seventeen, in 1989 for murder, and served 25 years ans was incarcerated for seven months and five days before being released on January 6, 2015, with Life parole supervision.

Since his release, he has been on a tireless mission to help educate, guide, and mentor the youth. He has spoken at schools all around Mount Vernon: Mount Vernon High, Mandela, Thornton, AB Davis, Benjamin Turner, and Grimes.

He has also spoken at Fordham University and Hunter college concerning the subject of solitary confinement and it’s affect on the human psyche. He received his Associates Degree in Paralegal Studies from TCI college in June of 2016 with a 3.8 GPA (magna cum laude).

He started his first business, Krhyme Publishing, while in prison and published two of his own novels, Son of Solomon (won an editor’s choice award) and Enterprise Corruption.

He has formed more businesses since his release, and his corporation, Bunting Enterprises, Inc. purchased Platinum Hand Car Wash on June 1 and had his Grand Opening on Sunday, June 24, 2018.

Johnnie has been hiring young people from the community in hopes that having them earn an honest living will keep them from facing the temptation to go to the streets for money. He has also done work with NewFlex Youth, Inc. in Mount Vernon as a coach and mentor to the children in our community.

Johnnie has been discharged from parole supervision after serving three years because of his numerous accomplishments and his stellar behavior. He serves as an example to inner-city youth everywhere, how one can turn their life around and to not have to let mistakes of the past, dictate their future.

About the Short Film: Grants have long been a critical source of capital for businesses, but Blackowned businesses are not gaining access to them at the same rates as other businesses. What led to this distribution inequality and how does it impact the financial opportunities of business owners? How are the next generation of Black-owned businesses in New York overcoming this challenge?

These are the questions that will be explored in a SBD Digital Media short documentary called “Ownership: Free Money” featuring Black business grant recipients. This is episode 2 in the Ownership short documentary series about the next generation of Black-owned businesses in New York.

About the Director & Executive Producer: Sayidana Brannan-Douglas is a 24-year-old documentary director and producer based in Yonkers, New York. For the last 3 years, she has honored Black History Month by highlighting Black-owned businesses through a video produced by her business SBD Digital Media.

In 2019 and 2020, she created individual video spotlights on Black student entrepreneurs at her university, who were starting a business while in college, like she did. In 2021, she took it to the next level with a short documentary called Ownership. Episode 1 was about why it actually makes a difference to buy from Black-owned businesses and the 3 things they need to grow economically.

This year, she is turning Ownership into an annual series, and “Free Money” will be Episode 2.

Featured Businesses: The short film will feature Alfonso and Jamila Wright, the owners of Brooklyn Tea, Karl Franz Williams, the owner of 67 Orange Street, and Tammeca Rochester, the owner of Harlem Cycle. It will also feature the grantor perspective of the Director of the Columbia-Harlem Small Business Development Center.
