Partnership with the Fred Hollows Foundation Blackwoods longstanding support of the Fred Hollows Indigenous Australia Program has been bolstered by donations generated via sales of the Prosafe Safety range of eye and face protection products. 10% of sales of these products are donated to The Foundation. So far, Blackwoods donations directed toward improving Indigenous health exceed $1,300,000, including over $600,000 in FY18 alone. Many customers are delighted to learn that not only are they receiving quality safety equipment tested to comply with Australian standards, but a portion of their purchase is directly assisting The Foundation with their work within the Indigenous community. Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander adults are three times more likely to go blind than non-Indigenous Australians, yet 94% of their vision loss is preventable or treatable. The Fred Hollows Foundation works to put an end to these alarming figures by focusing on education, screening and treatment. The Foundation’s Indigenous Australia Program supports increased investment in an access to culturally appropriate eye care services for remote and under-serviced Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities.

Avoiding eye hazards

Bump Caps

Moving from indoors to outdoors, cleaning and mixing are daily tasks in the food industry. All of these and many more food manufacturing related activities can create exposure to eye hazards like: • Particles in the air (flour, glass, dust)

• Water and chemical splashes

• UV light

• Sunglare

• Solvents

Bump Caps are lightweight head protection devices designed to guard the wearer from specific hazards that can cause certain nonserious injuries. Bump Caps reduce exposure to lacerations and abrasions caused by minor bumps to the head. They are ideal in locations where hard hats are not required but mild head injuries could still occur.

BLACKWOODS.COM.AU/FOOD-AND-BEVERAGE

––– protecting workers head to toe against hazards in the food and beverage manufacturing industry The food and beverage manufacturing industry is comprised of over 30 different industries. These range from abattoirs, sugar refineries and grain mills to food manufacturing, bottling plants and distilleries. This industry has many hazardous operations that can include worker exposure to physical, chemical and biological hazards.

Operations need to be assessed for risks and appropriate controls instigated. Often, due to the changing nature of the tasks in these workplaces, personal protective equipment is needed to provide suitable worker protection. 3M has a wide range of personal protection equipment for the food and beverage manufacturing industry. Respiratory

Eyes

Organic Dusts: "Dusty" elements like grains, flour, coffee and sugar are sources of high levels of organic dusts. There are also flavouring chemicals in concentrated form added to food processes which can be irritating or worse, to the respiratory system. Exposure to these components can lead to an inflammatory response in the mucous membranes and respiratory tract or an immune response to allergens contained in the dust. Allergic conditions can include upper airway allergic symptoms as well as asthma. High levels of dust and associated moulds can occur with activities like loading and unloading grain bins.

Dusts and fine particles can be released from food handling and processing operations hence eye protection for workers in these areas is important. Well fitting safety spectacles or goggles can protect the eyes from accumulation of dusts and from flying particles. They can also help with protection from liquid spray or splash as well as from sun glare.

Spills There is the potential to spill liquids in many manufacturing operations – product in process, raw materials, processing equipment and storage areas can have spills at any time. These are normally unplanned and a quick effective response is needed to prevent spread and contamination into other areas and drains etc.

Infectious Micro-organisms: There are a number of micro-organisms that can occur in the food and beverage industry that can cause respiratory issues e.g. workers in abattoirs are at risk of exposure to brucellosis from the aerosols released during the slaughtering process and there can be bacteria, fungus and moulds associated with grains and storage areas. Q-fever and Leptospirosis exposure are also associated with animal handling activities.

Hearing Bottling and canning lines, processing equipment, sorting and packing operations can all create high noise areas requiring protection for the workers. If noise levels cannot be controlled in other ways (e.g. enclosures, distance), use of suitable hearing protection devices (e.g. earmuffs or metal detectable earplugs) for all those working in high noise is important to get exposures below the recommended eight hour average limit of 85dB(A).

minimise the risk of cross contamination and keep your business running safely Minimising risk of cross contamination in a Food Manufacturing Facility should be at the centre of any business' commitment to Food Safety. Implementation of colour coded equipment and a skin care program can help meet your HACCP requirements and keep your business running safely and efficiently.

Colour Coding Guide The colour coding of cleaning equipment is a simple yet effective tool that can be utilised to make a large difference to hygiene standards. The identification of cleaning equipment for use in different areas will reduce the risk of cross contamination and infection in the work environment. There is no industry standard guidelines for the colour coding. They may be different based on the industry.

This hardwall hose is used for suction and delivery of milk, dairy products, fruit juice, beer, wine and others alcohols up to 96%. (With exception of fatty foods and oils.) It is suitable for hot air on tank trucks up to 140°C.

Blackwoods working to improve hose safety and product loss Blackwoods and Dixon Asia Pacific teamed up to provide a safe, cost effective solution to failing hose assemblies at a leading wine and spirits label located in the world famous Barossa Valley. The solution involved a new one piece "wine" crimp system to replace the old method of retaining hose tails with clamps. These clamps would often fail, resulting in fittings being pushed out at the end of the hoses, leading to product loss. In addition, when not handled correctly, the sharp edges of the clamps would cut cellar staff, leading to lost-time injuries. The tested and certified crimped assemblies from Dixon helped to eliminate product loss and staff injury and provide the manufacturers with peace of mind, especially where hoses are left unattended such as cross-flow filtration. Using Dixon’s one-piece stainless-steel crimp hose tail range, Blackwoods can provide Australian wineries and beverage manufacturers with a market leading fitted hose assembly solution. Available in almost any size, length or configuration as required.

––– one-stop for all your metal fabrication needs Blackwoods offers a comprehensive range of metal fabrication equipment, including leading welding, abrasive, tool and consumable brands. From versatile welding machines toheavy duty grinding discs, we can help you find the right product for the task at hand.

Clear the air on welding safety The International Agency for Research on Cancer has recently classified Group 1 elements, found in some welding fumes, to be carcinogenic to humans. When welding must be performed in enclosed or other areas where it is difficult to provide effective ventilation, it is recommended a fume control measure be used. PAPR (Powered Air Purifying Respirator) welding helmets and portable fume extractors are systems that deliver filtered air and gives portability and flexibility to easily move around the job.

Since fumes and gases can be dangerous to your health, what three steps should you take to protect yourself? 1. Keep fumes and gases from your breathing zone and general area 2. Keep your head out of the fumes 3. Use enough ventilation or exhaust at the arc, or both, to keep fumes and gases from your breathing zone and general area

What is the employers Duty of Care to their employees in the work place? Under the Work Health & Safety Act 2011, if you are an employer or business then you have a primary duty of care to ensure your workers and others are not exposed to a risk to their health and safety. Welding fume is a potential risk if it is not managed appropriately.
