// BUILDING AUSTRALIA SAFELY WITH WORKHORSE Understanding the risks associated with working through the night, Cahal Callanan Workhorse Workwear is proud to launch an all-white Bio Motion workwear range. WHAT IS BIO-MOTION WORKWEAR? Bio-Motion refers to the use of retro-reflective tape applied to garments in a way that allows the movement of a person to be amplified and thus increasing the persons visibility at night. Retro-reflective tape is applied in two separate hoops around the sleeves of a shirt, one above the elbow and the other closer to the wrist. For trousers, each leg has two hoops of retro-reflective tape, one hoop is above the knee and the other is below the knee. WHY ARE BIO-MOTION TAPED GARMENTS SAFER? These garments greatly improve the visibility of night workers, by reflecting light in a recognisable human form. By placing the retroreflective tape in a Bio-Motion
MSH179 BIO MOTION REFLECTIVE TAPED LONG SLEEVE
pattern, the combination of light and movement draws the attention of a driver or machine operator. The sooner a person is identified the sooner the driver can react and potentially avoid a collision.

WHY WHITE? White is naturally the most luminescent colour and provides the greatest contrast to a dark environment. A person wearing white becomes visible sooner than a person wearing any other colour. High Visibility colours like yellow and orange are best for day visibility and offer no improved visibility at night. WHO IS THIS RANGE IDEAL FOR? Road, rail and mining industry workers, plus anyone working around moving vehicles during the night. WHY WORKHORSE WORKWEAR? We pride ourselves on being the smart choice when it comes to workwear. Industrial quality workwear at an affordable price. Workhorse Workwear is manufactured to a high standard and its quality is backed by Blackwoods.

STAYING COOL WHEN THE HEAT IS ON Working in the heat can sometimes be hazardous, and without the right safety processes in place, employees are in harm’s way. The human body is comprised of over 60% water, so exposure to hot environments, or working or performing strenuous activities in these conditions can cause people to sweat up to 1 to 2 litres or more per hour. Sweating is the body’s natural way of cooling down, and maintaining adequate hydration is critically important to ensure workers avoid becoming dehydrated and feeling the effects of heat illness and heat stress. Dehydration severely affects an individual’s performance and general well-being. Just a 2% loss in fluid may impair the output of workers dramatically, and higher percentages of fluid loss can cause more severe effects. There are several options to mitigate the risk of incidences of dehydration, heat illnesses, and heat stress in the workplace. Firstly, sources of heat can be eliminated or substituted by scheduling work during the cooler parts of the day. Secondly, engineering and isolation controls can be used to remove heat, like using fans to circulate the air or erecting barriers to protect workers. When heat sources cannot be eliminated, substituted, or engineered away, then a suitable hydration program, work apparel, and PPE are of vital importance to managing the risk to employees. A supply of water to workers is the key to successful hydration programs. Various options exist to have water readily available, from individual carried bottles and cooler jugs, through to hydration backpacks. Hydration stations using 20L or 40L coolers are useful to administer water to multiple workers at once. 8
Safety Spotlight
Proper hydration does not merely mean drinking litres of water. While water is a key component, our body also needs certain amounts of electrolytes to stay adequately hydrated. Essential electrolytes such as Sodium, Potassium, Calcium and Magnesium are lost through sweat and must be replaced. Blood pressure, fluid balance and muscle contractions are some of the key functions that electrolytes help regulate in our bodies. Having an adequate supply of electrolytes is an important factor to consider when developing a hydration program, which is why Sqwincher® can play a vital role. Sqwincher® offers a range of drinks and concentrates, from regular, to frozen, to sugar-free options, and they come in all sizes to cater for every workplace. In addition to hydration, cooling products such as neckties, hard hat inserts, and cooling towels can help increase your body’s natural ability to dissipate heat through evaporation. For more extreme thermal environments, ice or cooling vests use frozen liquids to keep the body’s core cool.
So if your team is working in the heat, make sure you have a comprehensive plan of action to deal with any scenario. This will help ensure your workers stay safe, focused, and productive.

// W HEN GLOVES ARE
TOO HOT TO HANDLE We’ve all been there. Wearing a pair of gloves while working on a blisteringly hot day. Which, 100% of the time, leaves hands sweaty, smelly and feeling all-around uncomfortable.
Standard Glove Polyurethane/Nylon
MaxiFlex with ad-apt
The science behind this is relatively simple. Our skin contains an average of 155 sweat glands per square centimetre, but our hands have 83% more than that. In fact, the palms have a whopping 370 sweat glands per square centimetre. ATG® decided to tackle this issue and created AD-APT®, a revolutionary cooling technology that works in partnership with their glove innovation AIRtech. This combination of cooling and airflow keeps hands dry, and more importantly, productive, in harsh conditions.
We caught up with Dan Bircher, the lead technologist at ATG®, “Over 95% of glove wearers say their key challenge is keeping hands cool. We took this feedback on board and set out to create a product that not only cools the hands but is comfortable too.” ATG® have implemented a considerable amount of technology into what’s usually considered a simple product. Bircher says, “AD-APT® is activated not only by the hands moving, but also by the glove heating up. This releases a cooling agent that keeps hands dry and reduces their temperature.” And just when you think ATG®’s latest innovation couldn’t get any better, there’s even more impressive news. They worked with the Skin Health Alliance to ensure their AD-APT® technology is dermatologically accredited. “It was really important for our product to be tested in independent laboratories. When another organisation gives you a big tick, you know you’re on to a winner. This accolade is a reminder that the gloves are skin-safe, and the science and research meet international regulatory standards,” says Bircher.

WORKSITE COOL HOW WORKWEAR BRANDS ARE ADDRESSING HEAT STRESS IN 2020 WHAT IS HEAT STRESS? Heat stress occurs when your body cannot cool itself quick enough to maintain a healthy temperature. If left untreated, can lead to heat stroke which occurs once the body’s core temperature reaches 40.5°C. Heat stroke can lead to organ failure and even death. HOW CAN WE REDUCE THE RISK OF HEAT STRESS? Employers and workers can do several things to keep themselves safe during hot conditions, including taking regular breaks, increasing water intake, reviewing work targets/schedules to adjust to the conditions. Choosing the right workwear and footwear is also extremely important and can reduce their susceptibility to heat stress.
WHAT’S NEW IN WORKWEAR AND FOOTWEAR? KingGee have a number of exciting innovations, beginning with WorkCool Pro BioMotion; a light weight Ripstop stretch range, which features multiple ventilation points on the pants and shirts. A notable advancement to keeping the heat out is the segmented heat sealed retro reflective tape, because the tape is broken into segments it allows greater airflow to the wearer. A wearer would notice a significant difference if they were transitioning from traditional workwear styles. For industries that don’t require an all Cotton uniform the new Hyperfreeze Polo shirts from KingGee offers the coolest solution. Utilising a treatment with Xylitol (normally found in mint lollies) it transforms your polo shirt from holding sweat, to actively using your sweat to lower the temperature of the fabric in order to keep you cool, truly revolutionary and a great advancement in Polo shirts. Available in men’s and women’s styles, in multiple colours including High Visibility colours with segmented retro-reflective tape. Hard Yakka is also driving innovation with its ShieldTec range, it provides protection against flash fire and arc flash, while being lighter in weight and cooler than its competitors, feedback has been positive from our customers noting it’s more comfortable to wear than previous ranges.
Workhorse workwear offers great basics when it comes to addressing heat stress, a lighter weight drill range at an affordable price means this summer everyone should be in the right workwear. Lastly and not to be forgotten is footwear, if your team is working in the heat then review your footwear options. KingGee have launched a new work boot called Quantum which use KULKOTE® temperature regulating technology to keep your feet cool and expel heat, essentially it is like air conditioning for your feet.

COMFORT FROM THE GROUND UP
TIRED AND SORE FEET INCREASE YOUR RISK OF SLIP AND FALL INJURIES It is important to understand that every part of your footwear contributes to the comfort of your feet; the sole composition, inner sole technology and materials used. The more comfortable your footwear the lower the risk of foot fatigue and workplace injuries. For comfort as well as performance and protection always work from the ground up. When providing a recommendation, Brendan Ryan our Technical Safety Specialist always starts by selecting the sole type first. The sole composition is determined based on the risks identified and the work environment. Sole types include PU (Polyurethane – dual density), TPU (Thermoplastic Polyurethane), PUR (Polyurethane Rubber), PVC (Polyvinyl Chloride) for gumboots, and EVA midsoles. For light industries e.g. warehousing and transport, styles with an EVA midsole work best providing excellent step rebound. They are the lightest sole option and are normally found in a jogger or hiker style. These styles also feature a composite toe cap for optimal lightweight comfort and protection.
For medium to heavy industries, a TPU or PUR sole is recommended, both provide slip and abrasion resistance. The PUR gives you improved grip/slip resistance and is ideal for wet or greasy environments, it also provides heat resistance to 300°C. Consider a higher style boot for added ankle support, and zip sides for easy removal. Consider the Oliver 55-332Z, this is a wearer favourite and for good reason. It has a PUR sole, high leg, premium impact-absorbing PORON® pads, linings that absorbs moisture and odour to keep your feet comfortable, and a footbed with extra cushioning that adds to the wearers comfort.

// WATCH YOUR STEP ARE YOU OR YOUR WORKERS AT RISK OF A FOOT PUNCTURE WOUND?
In many workplaces where sharp scrap metals, nails, screws and spikes are a hazard, the use of penetration resistant safety footwear should be considered. Historically, having the protection of penetration resistant boots came at a cost to the wearer, they were more rigid and less comfortable than standard safety boots. However, innovation in penetration resistant materials now means wearers get the added protection they require, without the discomfort. Advances in technology have enabled the creation of lightweight textile insoles that are certified to the same Australian Standard (AS 2210.3:2019) as safety boots using rigid metal plates to achieve penetration
resistance. The textile insoles are composed of multiple layers of woven and bonded materials. The textile insole becomes an integral part of the sole construction and sits directly under the footbed — most wearers would not know it was there.
Added protection without reducing comfort, a clear win/win. If you have identified foot puncture wounds as a risk hazard in your business, then consider, the latest release from Blundstone. Style #983 has been designed with all the much-loved features of their best-selling #992 but in a crazy horse leather and featuring a penetration resistant insole.

// S EE EYE PROTECTION
THROUGH A NEW LENS
What do miners, construction workers, and factory hands all have in common? At some point, they’re all required to wear eye protection. And it might come as no surprise that each distinct working environment requires a unique lens technology to ensure workers can perform tasks safely.
their innovations have paved the way for stylish protective eyewear.
For instance, engineers moving from warm environments to cool ones may need an anti-fog lens. Or a supervisor working on a construction site might need polarised lenses to help prevent light glare from hitting him/her directly in the eye and affecting their vision.
Thankfully, Bollé Safety has a legacy of stylish eyewear which they’ve been able to replicate in their safety range.
When it comes to the right eyewear for the right job, Bollé Safety has got all the bases covered. Not only do they have some of the most stylish designs on the market, but their safety range is specifically designed for harsh working conditions.
The Comfort Sensitivity Perception (CSP) range is an effective solution for jobs that involve alternate exposure to bright light and low light, while also withstanding extreme temperature environments. And their Polarized technology is perfect for outdoor activities where there is a high risk of glare or reflections.
We caught up with Jack Hansen from Ready Workforce, who manages staff from a wide range of industries. “Some days I’ll have a crew working in the mines who spend all day going from darkness to full-on sunlight. If these guys don’t use the right eyewear, they could end up with serious damage.” That’s why Bollé Safety has invested millions into creating products for the harshest environments – and
“It’s also really important to the team that eye protection isn’t ugly. The lads might get pretty grubby on the job, but they care about how they look. They can be a vain lot to tell you the truth,” laughs Hansen.
So what exactly do Bollé Safety offer in the way of protection? Their Platinum range has a permanent coating applied to both sides of the lens that’s highly scratch resistant and delays fogging.
“Bollé Safety really have come to the party and helped protect my workforce without sacrificing on style. Some of my guys wouldn’t wear anything else,” Hansen concluded. All of Bollé Safety’s eye protection innovations are designed to look after Australians who work in high risk occupations. ASSESS | INFORM | EQUIP

// A LWAYS USE
YOUR HEAD
You wouldn’t replace a Toyota’s drive shaft with one made by Mazda. And you wouldn’t chuck a Ryobi battery on your Makita drill. Well, as strange as it sounds, the same logic applies to your helmet. Head protection may be the crucial difference between life and death in hazardous environments. That’s why all the parts and accessories need to work together with the right connectors. Because if they don’t, the fit may not be secure, and the wearer’s overall safety could be compromised. To help choose the right safety helmet and accessories, employers should undertake a comprehensive risk assessment. This will establish the need for head protection within specific work areas, as well as determine how a solution can be implemented. The risks identified in the assessment may include vertical impact, lateral
impacts and sound hazards if noise is present. It’s important to note that when PPE is provided by employers, appropriate health and safety training must be arranged. The 3M™ Interchange boasts a range of helmet-mounted face shield carriers which use one attachment mechanism, allowing a number of face shield materials to be connected. The interchange system also offers brow guard head-mounted carriers that fit the same face shield, so you can get an entire face protection solution from one supplier.

Another bonus of using accessories that work together is the comprehensive range of 3M™ hearing protection. There’s passive hearing protection for short or long duration noise or active protection for improved communication between workers in noisy workplaces. You can also attach sweatbands, chin guards, and shaded visors, so you’re prepared for any job. With such a wide range of additions available from 3M™, you might never have to deal with any other head protection supplier. The best addition to your helmet, however, may not be a safety accessory. It’s the ability to brand your gear with company logos and high visibility images. There are various logo and printing positions and colours available, and you can print on orders as low as 20. 3M™ can help you design and create a bespoke visual solution, so now you can stand out from the crowd in more ways than one.

OF THE FUTURE to present symptoms. And by then, it’s too late.”
The next evolution of hearing solutions has arrived, and it’s a massive leap forward from what you might use today. By combining existing knowledge with new technology, Honeywell have created a connected headset with cloud software and a range of advanced features.
Honeywell’s VeriShield Smart Hearing Solution consists of a protective headset that reduces background noise to safe levels within the earpiece, allowing workers to communicate more clearly and easily. The headsets can even alert workers when they are nearing and surpassing their daily noise dose limits.
Heather Torrey, president of Honeywell’s Industrial Safety business explains the inspiration behind the innovation. “Noise induced hearing loss is a subtle, often progressive occupational risk that can take a long time
Torrey says, “With our VeriShield Smart Hearing Solution, we provide immediate feedback to inform workers and empower
companies to proactively prevent exposure to unsafe noise levels, at every moment.” But perhaps the most impressive feature is the headset’s ability to continuously record and transmit noise-related data to Honeywell Safety Suite. This is a cloud-based service that collects and reports critical safety data and can be viewed and interpreted from a range of devices. Supervisors and workers can monitor and view noise exposure data, including noise peaks, patterns and unusual occurrences. Generated data can now help safety managers improve their company’s hearing programme by developing a personalised approach to worker safety. “The visualisation software can motivate staff to take part in preserving their hearing because they can actually ‘see’ the hidden hazard,” explains Torrey. It’s fascinating to see the technological advancements in hearing protection, and the entire industry is excited to see what Honeywell will develop next.

// WORKING ON THE EDGE
FOR MORE INFORMATION CONTACT THE BLACKWOODS TECHNICAL SAFETY SPECIALIST TO ARRANGE A SITE ASSESSMENT
In many work environments, edges at height are more common than you think. Look around any construction site and you’ll notice the many materials that make up the edges of a floor, roof or formwork. Falls over an edge are more hazardous than other falls, because the edge can sever or damage the lifeline which increases the force upon the worker as the fall is arrested. Honeywell has recognised these hazards and taken the opportunity to introduce a new suite of Self Retracting Lifelines called the Turbolite Edge, Turbolite Extreme Edge, and Falcon Edge. The Honeywell Turbolite Edge SLR range are compact, lightweight, durable SRLs that are simple to use and available in a multitude of configurations. They come in a range of lengths across cable and web options, and there’s a variety of connection options too.
18
Safety Spotlight
Perfectly suited to your personal profile, the SLRs have the capacity to support user weights up to 140kg in all connections at foot-level and above. // L OOKING AFTER
VALUABLE ASSETS BECAUSE WHEN EVERY JOB RELIES ON YOUR EYES, IT PAYS TO LOOK AFTER THEM.
Whether you’re checking the factory floor for hazards or tightening a 10mm bolt, we rely on our eyesight to get the job done. Regardless of our role within an organisation, our vision is integral to completing everyday tasks. So when you’re working in an environment that requires eye protection, it’s paramount to choose the right pair. But picking the right eyewear isn’t merely a case of grabbing the first one on the rack. Contrary to popular belief, one size doesn’t fit all. Research shows that if you don’t have the correct fit for your face shape, you’ll increase the chances of injury.
Head and face shapes vary considerably, so what should you do when shopping for new eye protection? Well, firstly make sure the style and frame suit the environment you’re working in. Secondly, ensure the glasses are aligned with the shape of your face, the gaps between the frame edges and your skin should be as small as possible. And lastly, try on as many styles as you can, some models feature lens angle and sidearm adjustments to improve the fit and position of the frame.
FITTING GUIDE CHECKLIST
5 1
Please check out the checklist below for reviewing the fit of your eyewear 1. No uncomfortable pressure points on the side of your head or behind the ears 2. Nose piece is comfortable and contacts your nose without pinching. Do you prefer a fixed or adjustable nose piece? 3. You should be able to see in all directions without major obstruction. 4. Overall weight of safety eyewear is evenly distributed between your ears. 5. Frames fit close to your face without hitting your eyelashes. The space around the frames and your face should be less than or equal to 6-8mm. Gaps between the frame and the face are as small as possible. 6. Lenses cover your eyebrow and any soft tissue around it. 7. Safety glasses stay in place when you move your head front to back and tilt your head side to side.

Sourcing protective gear often seems straightforward. Need hand protection? Buy a pair of gloves. That all sounds simple enough, but it soon becomes a challenge when you see how many products are available. Not just in quality, but price too.

“Since July 2014, our recommendations have reduced injuries by an average of 65%, we’ve decreased customer’s product styles by an average of 25%, and saved organisations a total of $148m, which is something I’m really proud of,” says Keith. It’s easy to see why Keith is so passionate about his job. It not only saves customers money, but reduces product waste while keeping workers safe on-site. Which is a great result, any way you look at it.
Depending on the busines objectives, one or more of the following solutions will be deployed
S
Ansell even has a clever piece of software connected to a database of over 30,000 chemicals. The software cross-references chemicals with the type of job (and how often the job’s performed) then produces a list of appropriate products. Although this sounds complex, Keith knows how simple it is, especially from a user’s perspective.
With 12,000 assessments conducted since 2010, it’s fair to say Ansell really know what they’re doing, and the numbers speak for themselves.

Head of the Guardian team at Ansell, Keith Chui, explains why their service is so valuable. “We know customers want value for money. But sometimes they can focus too heavily on reducing costs, which can compromise workers’ safety. That’s why our Ansell Guardian program helps businesses optimise their hand protection needs. We can come on-site and do a full inspection to assess what products are appropriate for their workplace.”
“Our expert will sit down with the customer to get all the details of the job and workplace, then take a tour of the site. We do all the hard work upfront to make sure the software knows what it’s dealing with. We can then formulate a plan to determine which gloves are needed to complete jobs comfortably, and productively,” says Keith.

Thankfully, Ansell Guardian provides a solution. Their service helps customers select and use the correct hand protection to improve safety and productivity without breaking the bank.

// WORKING AT HEIGHTS MANDATORY INSPECTIONS
We all have a duty of care to prevent injury or harm to staff, contractors, and visitors in the workplace. The identification of workplace hazards and implementing controls to reduce or eliminate them form the basis of many workplace Standards, Regulations and Government Acts.
All inspection data is entered into the Bullivants Electronic Asset Management system which can be accessed via a secure web portal. This system provides improved traceability of your valuable assets and advises you of your due or overdue inspections.
With the significant increase in the installation of permanent ‘Working at Heights’ equipment, such as safety lines (or static lines), anchor points, rigid rails, vertical/ladder lines or fall protection equipment, there is a responsibility to maintain this equipment in a good and serviceable condition.
Bullivants capabilities exceed far more than just inspecting and testing. As approved and accredited installers, their experienced Installed Systems Team can provide a complete service, from the initial enquiry, including design, supply and installation, through to handover training and annual inspections. You can be 100% confident you’re getting a reliable and trusted solution with Bullivants.
It’s an Australian Standard AS1891.4:2009 requirement that this apparatus is inspected and, in some cases, tested, by a qualified professional at a specified interval – and more often if site conditions or state regulations dictate. Height safety systems are also generally required to be inspected and tested with recertification, 10 years after the installation date.
With an extensive network of branches across the country, Bullivants can service any area in Australia. Ensure your workers are safe and their equipment is fit for purpose by giving Bullivants a call.
If you’re unsure about your workplace regulations or whether certain equipment requires inspection, contact Bullivants. They have skilled, authorised, and professional height safety personnel who can ensure your ‘Working at Heights’ gear meets or exceeds Australian Standard requirements.

// STAYING SAFE UNDER PRESSURE If people are working around high pressure fluids in your business, it’s important to identify all aspects of safely managing a high-pressure fluid system. This includes the emergency response and treatment of any injuries that may result from interaction with the system. For example, the speed of fluid forced through a pinhole break in a hydraulic hose can reach 250 metres per second – almost the same muzzle velocity of a rifle. At this speed, fluids can be driven through protective clothing, including gloves. This can cause a very small puncture wound, and if left untreated can lead to amputation. While this may sound alarming, wearing the right PPE gear can help mitigate a lot of the dangers associated with high-pressure fluids and gases. One of the protections available is the HexArmor Pointguard Ultra range. These incredible gloves can withstand fluid injection resistance up to 700 bar, and they’re designed for increased dexterity and comfort. Now your team can complete jobs efficiently while staying safe.

Safety Spotlight
So whenever your crew are working with high-pressure fluids or gasses, think about how quickly fluid can exit a hydraulic hose. It’s probably all the motivation you need to ensure they’re wearing the right protective gear.

When considering unique designs, custom fabrics, or highly personalised uniforms, you may need to consider local manufacturing. Local manufactures can give you greater flexibility when it comes to customising your uniform, however finding them is not so easy, as most brands have shifted their production abroad.
Tuffa Workwear is one of the few workwear brands that manufactures workwear both locally, and abroad. Established in the late 70’s the brand specialises in highly technical apparel and their Melbourne factory has the ability to personalise styles to meet their customers unique needs. Samuel Yap, Blackwoods Senior Account Manager shares with us how his large electrical industry customer needed a fire retardant and ARC flash protective uniform for its 500+ Australian workforce, and why Tuffa FR was the best solution. “Once we understood their specific FR uniform requirements and how they intended to place orders, we realised an Australian made product would deliver the best results. So, we turned to Tuffa Workwear. Tuffa, have provided exceptional service and are constantly evolving their offering to keep up with the latest innovations, we have found them to be reliable, flexible, and accommodating regarding small orders and made to measure sizes, on occasion we have even sent people to be personally measured at their factory for their uniform.”
