Chesapeake Light Craft: Your Source for

Boat Plans, Boat Kits, Boatbuilding Supplies, & Gear Three Ways to Build One of Our Boats: Whether you're a seasoned pro with groaning shelves of highquality materials and a giant mechanized shop, or a total newbie without a C-clamp to your name, or something in between, we've got a boatbuilding project for YOU.

• Build From a Kit We've shipped more than 25,000 of our meticulously prepared wooden boat kits to every state and more than 70 countries around the world. With comprehensive instruction manuals and everything you need right there in the box, this is how most people build a boat in their garage. Or in their basement, carport, living room, or dormitory. Or even on the deck of a yacht halfway across the Atlantic. (This actually happened.) Tech support is free and unlimited. Our job at CLC is to make sure your kit goes together and that you make it to launch day.

• Build From Plans Want to build it from scratch? Detailed plans and instructions have been a priority at CLC since 1991. Our plans have been featured in magazines from Popular Mechanics to WoodenBoat Magazine and a score of others. They keep getting better every single year. We've got a little bit of everything, from plans suitable to first-timers, on up to big projects for people who know their way around a scale-rule. Nearly all of our plan sets feature instruction manuals with step-bystep photos, and most plans provide full-sized patterns for every part in the boat. And just as with our kits, tech support is free. Just call or email.

• Build Your Boat in a Class Since 1994 we've led more build-your-own-boat classes than any company on the planet. Hundreds of classes, thousands of delighted students. Most classes are a week in length, and you take your own boat home at the end! Instructors aren't just professional boatbuilders; they're professional teachers. With an average class size of seven or eight students, you'll get all the individual attention you want, and we won't let you leave with a crummy boat. Most students tell us: "We could have just built one of your kits at home. But we knew that taking a week off for a class would guarantee that the thing gets built, and built right." It's great fun.

Boatbuilding Supplies & Gear Here's the truth: There's never been a better time to build your own boat. Never in history have so many great designs been available to the amateur boatbuilder. Unless you've never picked up a boat magazine or logged onto the internet, you know that there are thousands of great boats out there. Chesapeake Light Craft's mission is to help YOU build a boat, no matter what design you choose. So a huge percentage of our business is the supply of high-quality boatbuilding materials to folks all over the USA and beyond. And we leverage our volume advantage in buying materials to offer great discounts on vital stuff like marine plywood, epoxy, fiberglass, bronze and stainless hardware, and literally a thousand other things. Let us help you with your boatbuilding project!

Wood Duckling: 8 ' x 2 4 " x 2 2 lbs $ 6 10

Whimsical creations by gifted boatbuilder (and CLC house designer) Eric Schade, the Wood Duck kayaks manage that trickiest of design briefs: great looks, ease of use, nice performance, and easy construction. The idea of a "recreational" kayak, as distinguished from the long, tippy, rail-thin Inuit seal-hunting kayak, is not new. These days you can buy a cheap, stubby rec kayak at any corner store. What you can't buy off the shelf is the Wood Duck's combination of cheerful good looks and excellent paddling manners.

Wood Duck 10: 1 0 ' x 3 0 " x 36 lbs $ 1, 0 4 9

The Wood Duck 12 startles everyone with its speed. In spite of a generous 30inch beam and huge cockpit opening, it will keep with the fast touring kayaks at cruising speeds. Stable enough to be a comfortable fishing platform, you can pack your tackle box. Or bring your camera and binoculars for birdwatching. A payload pushing 300 pounds will accommodate all sizes of folks, and lots of gear, too. The Wood Duck 10 is a pip, light enough to carry in one hand, but nimble and able on the water for folks up to 200lbs. A staff favorite, the Wood Duck 10 won't win a sprint race but it's effortless to manage on and off the water.

The Wood Duck 14 is the rec kayak for really big-and-tall paddlers, or for those who want to share the cockpit with a toddler or a big dog. The Wood Duck Double scales up all the qualities of the design to manage two adults and their gear; the Wood Duckling scales the features down for kids under 100lbs without giving up a bit of utility. Among our very easiest kits to build, the Wood Ducks benefit from all the refinements we've developed over the last twenty years, including computer-cut, puzzle-jointed panels for precise assembly, and pre-drilled stitching holes and location marks for bulkheads. Wood Duck kits include a flush-mounted hatch astern for watertight gear storage, and like all of our kayak kits, seats, footbraces, deckrigging, and all the sundries we can think of are included. Builders electing to work from plans will have full-sized patterns for every part.

Wood Duck 10 Hybrid: 10' x 30" x 36 lbs $1,175

The term "hybrid" to describe a kayak that combines a plywood hull with a cedar-strip deck actually predates the widespread use of the automotive term. For woodworkers with a bit more in the way of chops, a cedar-strip deck offers the opportunity for craftsmanship and expression without giving up any of the Wood Duck's great on-water qualities. You'll build the plywood hull in the conventional stitch-and-glue fashion, assembling computer-cut panels with temporary wire stitches and permanent epoxy and fiberglass reinforcement. Then you'll drop in curved deck molds, cut and fit your cedar strips in whatever design tickles your fancy, and glue the bead-and-cove strips together with ordinary carpenter's glue. Lift the deck assembly off, sand it smooth on both sides, and render it rigid and waterproof with layers of clear fiberglass and epoxy. Discard the deck molds and glue the deck to the hull, add a cockpit and hatch, and you're done.

It's a satisfying end to a bundle of bead-andcove cedar strips and plywood. The Wood Duck 10, 12, and 14 are available with the hybrid scheme, both in the form of a complete kit or as plans with full-sized patterns.

Thanks for offering such an amazingly good, hard-to-screw-up kit that produces such a beautiful heirloom. We're already tickled by the attention this thing gets, whether on the roof of the car or in the water. – Rich S., Wood Duck 12, Rockville, Maryland

Shearwater 14: 14' 6-3/8" x 23" x 39 lbs $1,089

We commissioned Eric Schade to design the Shearwater series of high-performance sea kayaks in 2005, following on 10 years of kayak work he'd done under his own shingle, Shearwater Boats. The result is singular refinement and polish in handling–and in the ease of construction. With nearly a thousand of these darkening the waters worldwide, the Shearwaters have racked up glowing editorial reviews, innumerable race trophies, and legions of fans delighted by a kayak that really sparkles on the water.

Shearwater 16: 16' 1-3/4" x 23" x 42lbs $1,149

Anyone who's tried out a bunch of kayaks (much less attempted to design one) knows that it's a game of millimeters. Just a touch more rocker here, a pinch less volume there, and you can alter the handling completely. Eric has navigated a minefield of competing design features: too much rocker and the boat is great in waves but lousy in wind; too much bow and stern volume and you never submarine but your cruising speed is too slow; too big a cockpit and everyone fits but you lose that vital feel and feedback as the kayak moves under you.

Shearwater 17: 17' x 22-1/4" x 44 lbs $1,149

For the athletic or experienced paddler, the Shearwaters will dance in the waves. For new paddlers, there's enough stability to enjoy the boat while leaving lots of

performance to grow into. Shearwaters run a little small, and we meant it that way: think of them as sports cars with a low roof and deep bucket seats. The Shearwater Tandem deploys a lot of nifty design voodoo to retain speed and capability in a surprisingly compact package. Shearwater construction is state-of-the-art. Computer-cut panels fold together with uncanny speed and accuracy. Dark red sapele decks are standard in every kit, the reddish-brown swirling grain of the decks contrasting with the honey-colored okoume sides and bottoms. Watertight bulkheads, flush hatches fore and aft, and complete deck rigging are standard.

Shearwater Sport - Rico Pagliei

Thanks for your patient help during my build. My Shearwater is in the water, and I love it! Tracks like a bullet, fast, snug yet comfortable cockpit. The Sapele deck may be the most beautiful wood I've ever seen-pictures don't do it justice! – James D., Shearwater 17, New London, CT.

Shearwater 14 Hybrid: 14' 6-3/8" x 23" x 39 lbs $1,275

Shearwater 16 Hybrid: 16' 1-3/4" x 23" x 42 lbs $1,275

Is it gilding the lily? The Shearwater kayak's lovely proportions can stand some embellishment, thus the popularity of a "hybrid" option, which substitutes cedar strips for the stock model's sapeleand-okoume plywood deck. We'll supply the interlocking bead-and-cove strips and computer-cut deck molds, and you'll piece them together to form your own elegant deck design. Hybrid decks require a bit more time and patience to design, assemble, and finish, but someone with a bit of cabinetwork experience can turn out an absolutely unique kayak. We’ve seen wild free-form designs, intricate “parquet” checkerboards, inlaid wildlife, and some that defy description. We default in the kits to a third dark strips, a third medium, and a third light, but you can specify the exact mix in advance. Just let us know!

The Shearwater Hybrid’s hull and cockpit are identical to the stock model. Of the several we built here at CLC, we were surprised to find the hybrid versions coming in a few pounds lighter than the plywood-decked Shearwaters. Hybrid decks are available on the Shearwater 14, 16, 17, and Shearwater Sport Models.

The Shearwater Sport is the most versatile kayak in the catalog, and maybe anywhere. A smart synthesis of everything good in the Shearwater and Wood Duck line, this is probably the one boat that does it all–and well, too. Eric Schade’s Shearwater Sport is a great combination of kayak virtues. The Shearwater Sport’s shorter length makes it more maneuverable and easier to use than the long, fast Shearwater 17. Settling on a length of 14’6”, we added just enough beam (25”) to support paddlers well north of 200 lbs. Refinements to the underbody, the bow, and the stern allowed Eric to retain the crisp handling that has sold upwards of a thousand of the Shearwater kayaks. The compact Shearwater Sport gives up nothing in cruising speed to its longer, narrower Shearwater sisters, though it won’t be quite as fast in a sprint. It’s still more than fast enough to accelerate onto waves for surfing. Indeed, many paddlers will build the Shearwater Sport just for surfing. Choose from three variations of the Shearwater Sport: First, there's the stock Shearwater Sport, a quick-and-easy-to-build paragon of virtues with a lovely sapele deck that's

standard in the kit. There is a Hybrid option, of course: keep the great handling, but show off your wood butchery skills with a cedar strip deck. And then there’s the Shearwater Sectional option. Spin loose five sturdy stainless bolts at the water-tight bulkheads and the Shearwater Sectional packs down to fit in a hatchback car. Or in your garage. Or in your apartment. Or in the hold of an Alaska-bound de Havilland DHC-3. It weighs a few pounds more than the stock model, but retains every quality that has made the Shearwater Sport a huge hit with paddlers.

Chesapeake 14: 14' x 21" x 36 lbs $899 Legitimately iconic in the paddling world, the Chesapeakes are the original, essential touring kayaks. With more than 7000 kits shipped since 1996 and an unknowable number built from plans, the award-winning Chesapeake designs are admired, cherished, imitated, and most of all enjoyed by paddlers who have someplace to go in a kayak.

Chesapeakes are built to endure a lifetime of rough handling with 4mm okoume plywood hulls and decks, entirely sheathed with fiberglass. Watertight bulkheads are standard, as are hatches, deck rigging, adjustable footbraces, and a comfortable seat. Mill Creek 13: 13" x 29" x 40 lbs $999

Mill Creek 16.5: 16'6" x 33" x 62 lbs $1,149

Kayaks took a long time to catch on as recreational watercraft. There were the sealskin hunting kayaks of the aboriginal north, and there were the beamy canoes descended from native birchbark craft, and not much in between. It took early sportsman-artisans like John MacGregor (born 1825) and L. Francis Herreshoff (born 1890) to fuse the two, and what they came up with looks a lot like the Mill Creek. Properly called a "double-paddle canoe," the Mill Creek 13 and 16.5 combine the stability of a canoe with the low-windage profile and water-shedding decking of a kayak. The low freeboard allows the use of an efficient double-paddle, while the stability and large cockpits offer great comfort and versatility. The Mill Creek 13 has appealed to fishermen, photographers, bird-watchers, and casual paddlers since its launch in 1995. The big and dry cockpit is married to a hull offering excellent speed and tracking. This may be a stable and easy-touse single kayak, but don’t expect it to be slow and dull to paddle. Outfitted with a simple sailing rig, it’s a little gem.

Frustration with the plasticky, bulbous, toy-like, sit-on-top kayaks that speckle the waterfront led Nick Schade to design this elegant and sophisticated stitch-and-glue sit-on-top. Ideal for fishing or paddling off beaches, the Sea Island Sport’s roomy cockpit will fit big and tall folks—up to 275 pounds or more. Any water that comes in will drain right back out through the self-bailing cockpit. Nothing confines the paddler. In the hot months, you sit in the open air so your legs won’t broil. The Sea Island Sport is identical in construction to other CLC kayaks. Convenient features include puzzle joints for rapid assembly of computer-cut hull panels, and computer-drilled holes for the wire stitches used in assembly. Premium dark sapele decks, flush hatches, a comfortable tall seat, and a profusely detailed instruction manual are standard in the kit.

The Matunuck is designed expressly for surfing. Nick Schade has applied his formidable skills in flat-plate-geometry design to the Matunuck, with thrilling results. Even sturdily built—for survival in violent conditions—the Matunuck weighs only 21 pounds. The Matunuck has the speed to catch the big waves, and the low moment of inertia means terrific responsiveness for spinning and cutting. Construction is straightforward, with our CNC cutter taking care of puzzle joints and holes for the copper stitches. It’s suggested that you carve your own seat for a custom fit. Hulls are marine okoume plywood; you can varnish, paint, or even stain your Matunuck in whimsical patterns as you can see from the photos.

We first teamed up with artist, artisan, designer, and paddler Nick Schade and his company Guillemot Kayaks back in 2007. Enchanted by Nick's gift for drawing performance kayaks with beautiful lines and sophisticated performance, we set out to make kits for his boats accessible to a wider audience. While Nick's talent for design extends to stitchand-glue types (see the Petrel Play and Night Heron SG), most of his oeuvre comprises stripNick Schade planked kayaks. Nick makes his living designing boats, building boats, and writing about this singular art form. Such is his esteem as a designer-builder that one of his completed boats hangs in the permanent collection of the Museum of Modern Art.

The 17' Guillemot was Nick's first major foray into sea kayak design; the 25-year-old original resides on display in our showroom, a prized example of wood-epoxy durability and the genial on-water handling that typifies these boats. The Night Heron series features edgier, high-performance designs, a bit harder to build and requiring more skill to really wring out on the water. The 17' Petrel is typical of this evolution, and we ship more of those than almost any other stripplanked design. Simply marvelous to behold, the Night Heron series kayaks will be neither your first boat to build nor your first boat to paddle, but will reward patient craftsmen and skilled paddlers in equal measure.

Strip-Planked Construction A strip-planked kayak is a more involved project than a stitchand-glue design, but a CLC kit makes it a rewarding process. Strip kits are comprised of computer-cut molds, a strongback, precisionmilled bead-and-cove wood strips, and everything else you’ll need except for varnish and a paddle. Many builders start with complete kits, Strip-Planked Kayak Kit giving them everything they need. Others will just order our mold kits (see our website for pricing), choosing to mill their own strips and track down other supplies. And of course, many will start from plans as scratch-builders. Working from a kit, you’ll assemble the mold and strongback right out of the box, then staple (or clamp) cedar strips to the molds. The bead-and-cove feature of the strips means that each strip interlocks with the next, so you’ll build up your design on the molds somewhat like laying bricks. Ordinary wood glue holds the strips together in the early stages. Sketch out your own patterns of contrasting strips (we send you light, medium, and dark wood in whatever proportions you request), or work off one of many patterns suggested in Nick’s books: The Strip-Built Sea Kayak and Building Strip-Planked Boats. You are limited only by chops, patience, and creativity. Are strip-planked kayaks a good first boatbuilding project? If you have some background in woodworking, yes. Newbies to wood shavings might want to try a stitch-and-glue kayak first. A fiberglass skin on the inside and outside makes the structure rigid, followed by coats of varnish for gloss and durability. Guillemot builders are given broad latitude to interpret elements like hatch and cockpit design. Complete flush hatch systems are included in kits.

Nick Schade’s line of strip-planked Greenland-style sea kayaks are renowned for sophisticated performance on the water, beautiful lines, and sculptural hull details. But strip-planked boatbuilding is not for everyone. Novice woodworkers and weekend hobbyists with limited free time may be reluctant to take on the complex original Petrel kayak design. Thus the new plywood version of the Petrel, designed with great deliberation to retain the strip-planked original’s point-and-shoot handling. In the Petrel SG, computer-cut plywood panels for the hull and deck are stitched together with temporary wire stitches, then reinforced with epoxy and fiberglass. The simplified plywood hull has its own sculptural qualities, and gives away none of the performance of the original. CLC’s Petrel SG offers features not found in any other kayak kit. Airtight, recessed SeaLect hatches fore and aft AND a recessed SeaLect day hatch are standard. The cockpit is recessed to make rolling easier. A retractable skeg is standard in the kit. Trickier than our other stitchand-glue kayaks, the Petrel SG probably isn't for impatient first-timers. But it's got stacks of features and mountains of performance that make its 100-120 hour build-time a bargain for someone who has mixed a batch or two of epoxy before.

Paddlers are demanding versatility AND performance from their sea kayaks these days. Little by little, designers like Nick Schade are squeezing huge performance out of compact dimensions. The Petrel Play is just 14 feet long, a length once reserved for recreational kayaks. But Nick’s ingenius shaping of plywood panels yields a design that offers world-class handling in the surf AND a comfortable cockpit for recreational paddling AND can be built by an intermediate woodworker. The Petrel Play will appeal to paddlers of all shapes, sizes, and skill levels. Like the Petrel SG, the front half of the Petrel Play is multi-chined, for an efficient balance of low-drag buoyancy and minimal resistance. The aft half of the kayak has a firm single chine, perfect for carving turns and surfing, and for excellent secondary stability. Large paddlers will find generous knee- and footroom. The cockpit has been recessed to make rolling easier in expert hands. While easier to build than a strip-planked kayak, we don’t recommend the Petrel SG or Petrel Play as first-time projects. One or two simpler stitch-and-glue designs are suggested before jumping in.

Kayak Specifications Kayaks Are The Original “Personal Watercraft”

Recommended Paddler Weight

Like bicycles or running shoes, they need to fit YOU, or you won’t enjoy the performance advantages. That’s why Chesapeake Light Craft offers more than 50 kayaks of all shapes and sizes, from racing boats to stable recreational craft. Pick your kayak by height, weight, shoe size, and intended usage.

This should be considered a rough guide. The weight ranges shown will be comfortable, but as you reach the high and low limits other variables like height and shoe size become important considerations.

Hull Specs “Hull Weight” is not the weight of a stripped hull, but the weight you can actually expect to have to lift onto your car. This weight includes deck rigging, footbraces, seat, and other typical fittings.

29 29

The lugubrious fine print: your results may vary. Boats can be lighter or heavier depending upon options, construction techniques, wood density and other variables. “Cockpit Size” refers to the opening in the cockpit coaming that is provided in the kit as standard equipment.

Maximum Shoe Size This is expressed in men’s sizes and assumes the paddler is shod in the usual neoprene booties. Larger shoe sizes are sometimes possible for more athletic paddlers. Custom cockpits are available on some boats; call for details.

Maximum Payload This is the safe total load of the boat and differs from “Paddler Weight. A paddler whose weight approaches the “Max Payload” will have an uncomfortably high center of gravity. Properly stowed gear, however, does not affect stability.

J. Henry Rushton was a canoe builder during the "Sportsman Movement" of the late 19th century who helped promote a class of ultra-light sporting canoes. In this way he might have done as much to invent our sport as Inuit seal hunters did. Rushton’s most famous “pack canoe” was called “Sairy Gamp,” and it weighed just 10 pounds. Nick Schade’s thoroughly modern interpretation, the Nymph 10, is ten times easier to build and can weigh as little as 20 to 25 pounds built with quarter-inch bead-and-cove cedar strips. Some builders have really pushed the weight savings, using thinner strips and exotic fabrics like carbon fiber to yield boats as light as 15 pounds. Nick has drawn a 12-foot version as well, which will manage a payload of up to about 240lbs. The Nymph canoes are a more advanced project than something like the Sassafras 12, but will reward the patient carpenter with an heirloom.

New from the board of designer Nick Schade is the 17-foot Mystic River Tandem canoe. It’s a handsome, comfortable boat for protected water exploration– and a great embarkation point for builders looking to try their hands at the art of boatbuilding with cedar strips.

$1,599 Mystic River: 17'2" x 34" x 42 lbs

With classic lines, graceful recurved stems and nice tumblehome, this strip-planked canoe design would be at home drifting along the shore in the Adirondacks, or across a harbor in Maine. The long waterline and fine entry allows this canoe to cover the miles with speed and efficiency. It has good stability and the capacity to carry a decent load. While it does not have the huge payload of a cargo canoe or the water-shedding and turning ability of a whitewater canoe, it is a good all-around canoe for fast, lightweight touring. Canoes are the original cedar strip boatbuilding project, going back forty years or more. Canoes are easier than kayaks to build as there is no deck or cockpit coaming, and the gentle hull shapes make stripping over the molds quick and easy. The Mystic River Tandem is a great first wood strip project.

The Sassafras 12 first made its appearance in our catalog in the late 1990's, one of our early LapStitchTM creations. Thanks to the fast, easy assembly, ultra-light weight, and versatility on the water, the Sassafras 12 has been a perennial favorite. After fifteen years of production, the design was been completely overhauled in 2013 with a deeper sheerline, a more shapely bow and stern, and a much updated and quicker-to-assemble kit. You'll snap together the hull planks with puzzle joints, then stitch the planks together with copper wire. Bulkheads drop onto marks indicated by the computer cutter, then rails are added. Expect a build time of as little as 70-80 hours by the time you've built up a few coats of varnish. Then hoist the 28-pound hull in one hand, your paddle in the other, and head for the water.

Today we often think of wooden canoes as being strip-built, but lapstrake canoes have an even longer history. The legendary Rushton lapstrake canoes are considered the pinnacle of the canoe builder’s art. Unfortunately, traditionally-built lapstrake canoes require some seriously hairy craftsmanship. Enter CLC’s revolutionary LapStitchTM building method, which allows lapstrake canoes to be built by someone with no previous woodworking experience. All the planks and other parts are pre-cut. No strongback, molds, frames, or steam bending are required. Like the Sassafras 12, the Sassafras 16 has enjoyed a recent overhaul. Extensive beta-testing for several years preceded the rollout of the new model, which features a higher payload and more stability without a performance loss, and faster and easier hull assembly from a computer-cut kit.

It’s taken many years and more prototypes than we care to count to refine the Kaholo SUP boards. Working with surfer and paddleboard guru Larry Froley in California, we’ve created two boards with that rare quality of being fast enough to race, but stable enough for first-timers. Tracking is great and a fine bow with kayak-derived shaping lifts the Kaholo 12-6 and 14 up and over waves. With their uncanny speed, the Kaholo 12-6 and Kaholo 14 have found a following among racers. The 14 is better for larger paddlers (or those who might carry along dogs or small kids). The 12-6 is more compact, better for smaller-statured paddlers, and it fits in several increasingly popular racing classes. There are no other standup paddling boards in the world that are easier for a first-time boatbuilder, or better-looking.

Construction is fast and simple, with a grid of bulkheads and stringers inside to make the board stiff and light. Many builders opt to add colorful fabrics beneath the fiberglass sheathing for a truly custom look.

After kayaking I find the view from my paddleboard eye opening, I can't tell you how many sting-rays I saw. Do I like my board? I have paddled 8 times so far and can only feel sorry for my kayaks. – Phil T., Kaholo 14 SUP, Watertown, NY.

The CLC Cradle Boat is an exact 50% replica of the Eastport Pram, 47 inches long. The dinghy and cradle boat are identical in nearly every way, especially the hull shape, and construction is similar. We’ve tweaked the interior to better suit the little ones, who won’t need a rowing seat and daggerboard trunk just yet. The CLC Cradle Boat shifts into first place for “easiest kit in our catalog.” We’ve gone to great pains to limit the number of hours and the skill required. We’ve drilled the holes for you where temporary “stitches” of copper wire hold the boat’s handsome shape while you epoxy the planks. Bulkheads drop into slots, so no measuring. No need for fiberglass, so you’re spared that step during construction, though the Cradle Boat is sturdy enough to get banged around the way things do in houses with kiddies.

Cradle Boat: 47" x 26" x 13 lbs $469

A popular option converts the Cradle Boat into a coffee table, with a clear acrylic top that drops into place and a solid base. We estimate about 30 hours to do a first-class job of construction. You’ve got plenty of time before Christmas.

The urge to sail is a widespread affliction. Let's say you have a light, easilydriven kayak in your possession and you want to go sailing. What to do? A good kayak is usually too narrow to stand up to an upwind rig, so you need outriggers. Makeshift or clumsy outriggers are usually worse than nothing. So over many years we have developed and refined a system that can be dropped onto any kayak (ANY kayak–plastic, wood, or otherwise), and that is anything but makeshift.

$1,150 CLC SailRig: 10' x 120" x 30 lbs

This elegant system attaches to your kayak with four eyebolts. Add a rudder and a hole for the mast and that's it! Attach the rig and you've got a really fast and fun trimaran. Take it off and you get your kayak back, unsullied by extraneous hardware. The whole thing packs up small enough to transport atop a compact car. It's easy to imagine mounting serious coastal expeditions. Load up a touring kayak with three weeks' stores, and slice along for hours at a time at 6 or 8 knots, making 60 or 70 miles per day. Many people have done it with this rig. In 2012 we added a 70-square-foot sail to the existing 40- and 55-square-foot options. This will really turbo-charge a single or tandem kayak!

The Oxford Shell is a fast rec shell that’s suitable for rowers of all skill levels, and it's quick to build. Simplicity was the guiding principal; traditional riggers and sliding seats are deceptively difficult for a home builder to fabricate. So, we designed the Oxford Shell to accept the excellent self-contained Piantedosi and Alden sliding seat units. These clip into the cockpit in seconds, making it easy to transport the lightweight hull. Plenty of rocker lowers the wetted surface and improves handling in waves. The cockpit coamings are high enough to knock down spray from wind chop up to a foot or so. A removable aluminum skeg is standard in the kit for solid tracking. With a build time of under 80 hours, you could outfit a boathouse with a fleet of these in a couple of months!

The world needs more simple, honest skiffs like this. A hundred years ago, small skiffs of these proportions would have been everywhere and used for everything from transport to fishing to recreation. Nowadays, a good skiff like this is hard to find, having been replaced by fiberglass and aluminum and optimized for outboard power, not oars and sail. The Jimmy Skiff rows with a nice long glide and is stable enough for a fisherman to stand and cast. A sailing rig may be added from the start, or retrofitted at any point after the boat is complete. With a traditional Chesapeake "leg o' mutton" sprit-boom sail, the Jimmy Skiff is peppy and fun without being tippy. Construction is "two sides and a bottom," stitched and glued together, with a fiberglass sheathing for durability. The Jimmy Skiff is perfect for exploring lakes, learning how to sail, fishing, or just knocking around. Everyone needs a nice, good, all-around plywood skiff like this one.

Marine Lumber – Selected by Boatbuilders for Boatbuilders You can order the same superior lumber we use in our kits and display models, from the same stacks we pick over for our own projects. Order lumber in any quantity– no order too small–and in a wide choice of species. Your order will be hand-picked by our boatbuilders. We have worked very hard to keep the prices low, and we have sorted out how to ship small or large quantities. For larger orders, or lengths over eight feet, we have arranged to have the lumber shipped directly from the sawmill. Most shipments under eight feet will ship very affordably via UPS. Please allow a couple of weeks for your order, as lumber doesn’t grow–and isn’t stocked–in convenient multiples of 8 feet. We may have to mill the timber to your specs, and/or wait for those sizes to come in.

CLC has developed a specialty in shipping plywood all over the United States. Okoume, aucoumea klaineana, is a fast-growing, plantationgrown tropical hardwood. Okoume’s clear, beautifully-figured grain has a golden, honey-colored hue beneath epoxy and varnish, while its low density yields ultra-lightweight hulls. Chesapeake Light Craft’s okoume is manufactured in Europe’s finest FSCcertified mills to British Standard 1088 and Lloyd’s of London rules.

Sapele

Sapele is a beautiful reddish-brown African wood with a richly detailed, swirling grain. We stock thicknesses from 3mm to 18mm; call or email for availability.

Bead & Cove Strips

Precision Milled Bead-and-Cove Strips

As kits and plans for cedar-strip boat construction grow more accessible to aspiring boatbuilders, we have invested in elaborate machinery. In 2010 we had a $30,000 milling machine built for us. It produces miles and miles of bead-and-cove strips in clear cedar–and at reasonable prices. Our strips are made to very tight tolerances, always of uniform thicknesses and with precisely centered beads and coves for smooth hulls. These are the same strips we use for our display boats. Cedar strips are 3/4" wide and 1/4" thick.

Strip and hybrid builders will use these strips. Stock strips come in 6-8 foot lengths, and may simply be butted or scarfed to length as required by the design. We can produce strips up to 20 feet as a special order, though shipping those can be a challenge. We will try to accommodate special requirements for colors upon request. No two trees are alike so colors will vary wildly along a spectrum from very dark to very light–even in the same board! Like a fish market, what we have depends on what the truck unloads each week. For very light colored strips, we are currently using Alaskan yellow cedar.  LIGHT: 1/4" x 3/4" White Cedar Strips $.60 per lineal foot  MEDIUM: 1/4" x 3/4" Western Red Cedar Strips $.60 per lineal foot  DARK: 1/4" x 3/4" Peruvian Walnut Strips $.60 per lineal foot Please call us for bead-and-cove shipping rates or request a shipping quote via email: info@clcboats.com Not sure how many strips you need? 105 Epoxy Resin 105 Epoxy Resin® is the base material on which all West System 105 System epoxy compounds are built. The resin is a clear, pale yellow, low-viscosity liquid epoxy resin. Formulated for use with West System hardeners, it can be cured in a wide temperature range to form a high-strength solid with excellent moisture resistance.

West System - Epoxy and Hardeners

WEST System pretty much invented the idea of wood-epoxy composite boatbuilding. Their vast range of products emphasizes ultra-high strength and the most outstanding technical support in the business. We especially like their 207 Hardener for blush-free coating and clear fiberglass work, and their Six10 adhesive for filleting and bonding work. Like "Band-Aid" and "Kleenex," "WEST System" is synonymous with epoxy in most places, and you'll find it everywhere from spacecraft to America's Cup boats.

HOW WE SHIP BOAT KITS: Boat kits and oars and plywood and things are bulky! The packaging varies from one boat to the next, but most comprise one or two large cartons the shape and size of an eightfoot-tall door, accompanied by one or two smaller boxes with your epoxy kit and peripherals. The largest carton is rarely more than 60 pounds. We use a freight company for kit shipping. In most cases, a UPS-sized step-truck will pull up to your house to unload the boxes. We will email a tracking number so you can follow the progress of your kit in transit. On the website you’ll find tools that allow you to type in your zip code and calculate kit shipping prices, and more information about how we ship. Unlike Amazon, which mainly ships small things, we have to grapple with big, awkward things! Less bulky accessories ship via UPS, and ship free if they total over $275. Accessories will be shipped separately from your kit packages, so a boat kit and accessories may arrive at your home in several waves.

The Cocktail Class Wooden Boat Racing Association is sponsoring racing in this ridiculously nifty 8-foot racer. It’s powered by a 6hp or 8hp outboard, depending on how much the skipper weighs. Less than 200lbs and you are limited to a used two-stroke 6hp Johnson or Evinrude outboard–which are ubiquitous and inexpensive. Over 200lbs, and you may use an 8hp of any vintage. Needless to say, you can pack a huge amount of fun racing into a small space. Fleets are popping up all over North America and beyond. This is a 1939 design by Charles MacGregor, originally published in The Rudder Magazine as an example of what could be done with a novel new material called “plywood.”

At CLC, we have revised and updated the design to make it ultra-easy to build, and simultaneously stiffer and safer. Precision-cut frames slot together like an eggcrate. A simple jig–included in the kit–makes accurate setup easy for first-timers. The 143-page manual is lavishly illustrated and detailed. We offer a full range of accessories to equip this fun little racer.

Please thank everyone at CLC for all of the help over the last many months. I really can’t speak more highly of how professional and friendly each and every member of your staff has been. Most places I deal with have one or two bad apples who aren’t very friendly (especially tackle stores) and not much fun to buy from. CLC doesn’t have that, and it’s refreshing. We couldn’t be more pleased with how the whole partnership worked. – Gary R., Annapolis, MD.

There are, the last time we counted, about a million small powerboats in this category. Intended for fishing, crabbing, and casual utility use, the Peeler Skiff offers a range of incremental small improvements over other boats of the type. Added together, all this refinement yields a lightweight powerboat of amazing capability for the money. John C. Harris's Peeler Skiff design was optimized for smaller outboards. 8hp yields 11.5 knots with two adults and 13.5 with one. A 15hp showed 15 knots with 560 pounds of payload aboard, and over 20 knots with one person. This is not, however, a speedboat; you can stay on a plane in typical wind chop but you're not going to be jumping waves offshore. We think that a 10hp is probably about perfect for the typical Peeler Skiff candidate, who will be looking for efficient transport to the fishing grounds, or just an easy-to-launch, easy-to-retrieve family boat. The lines of the boat descend from New England dories. The combination of a narrow bottom and strongly flared sides make the boat dry, safe, and stable in bumpy water, and simultaneously benign on the helm and easily-driven.

The Chester Yawl is a design that's impossible to walk away from without one last look to take in those beautiful lines. From the plumb bow with its fine entry, to the delicate sweeps of the lapstrake planking, to the neatly proportioned wineglass transom, the Chester Yawl is a thoroughbred pulling boat that will beguile classic rowing boat snobs. Based on the Boston Whitehalls, the water taxis of the 19th century, rowing performance and excellent ergonomics are the focus of this John C. Harris design. Recalling overnight expeditions aboard a small rowing boat in his youth, Harris has left the interior open. This allows sleeping aboard, or just sprawling for an afternoon nap alongside a shady riverbank. A movable seat and footbraces eliminates shinbarking thwarts and allows perfect adjustment for all oarsmen.

The open interior also allows the addition of a drop-in sliding seat unit, transforming the Chester Yawl into an ocean-capable racer/cruiser, fast and dry in waves. Construction uses CLC's exclusive LapStitchTM process. Planks are glued to length with puzzle joints, then stitched together. Bulkheads are dropped in, and epoxy and fiberglass reinforcement added throughout. The Chester Yawl is within reach of a patient first-timer; most will spend around 120 hours building this lovely rowing boat.

Finally launched the boat today. It was very windy, but I couldn't wait any longer. It looked & felt great - in fact it exceeded my expectations in the way it handled. Thanks for a great boat - I really enjoyed building it and equally enjoyed getting it wet. – Kevin W., Chester Yawl, Trevor, WI.

One of the most popular small dinghies in the world, the Eastport Pram is a little pearl, a classic lapstrake yacht tender that ranks with the best. Great looks, stand-out performance, and ease of construction are hallmarks of this John C. Harris design. Among our easier-to-build boats, all Eastport Pram kits have the holes for the temporary copper stitches drilled in all of the hull parts by our computerized machinery. Bulkhead locations are indicated by drill-holes and machined “mortises” so there’s no need for measuring, and the parts fit exactly every time.

Eastport Pram: 7'9" x 48" x 65 lbs $999

The Eastport Pram's diminutive size belies startling performance. It rows great with a payload up to 375 pounds, and unlike many small dinghies, it sails beautifully with two adults aboard. This is an outstanding sail-trainer, or just a compact boat for exploring lakes and harbors. It’s simple to add the sailing rig later if you just want a rowing boat to start with. The standard kit includes the daggerboard trunk, to make the conversion quick and easy months or years after launch.

A “nesting” version of the Eastport Pram has been massively popular. In this edition, the boat comes apart at a sturdy watertight bulkhead. The bow piece nests neatly in the stern, leaving you with a very compact 57” x 50” cube to stow on the mothership, or in your apartment, garden shed, RV, or in the back of a small pickup.

This beautiful Norwegian-style pram weighs less than 100 pounds yet offers a 650-pound payload, enough to ferry three adults and their gear between dock and mothership under oars or outboard power. Originally commissioned as a high-class tender for the readers of Passagemaker Magazine, which caters to big yachts, this sensationally popular design has been taken up as an ideal family daysailer and exploration craft. Deep and stable, you can pile adults and kids and dogs and gear aboard and proceed comfortably. Rigged as a “gunter” sloop or with a simpler balanced lug, the Passagemaker is fast and stiff and will outsail virtually any other tender her size. Her crews will sneak away to explore bays and rivers and lakes. It’s a terrific platform for teaching the kids to sail. The spars stow inside the hull for transport. With its deep skeg the Passagemaker can be towed in all conditions. The editors of Passagemaker Magazine suggested that a version with a removable bow would improve storage solutions, and this has been a very successful option.

The very first stroke in an Annapolis Wherry results in a rush of acceleration, ruffling your hair and leaving a smooth, flat wake astern. You'll leave a lot of other rowing boats behind, too. The Annapolis Wherry offers exciting performance on the water combined with breathtaking good looks. Solid stability, seakindly lines, excellent tracking, a buoyant bow, and ample flare make the Wherry a natural choice for rowing in choppy conditions. The open design allows for plenty of sprawling and a picnic basket when beach cruising. Intended only for sliding seat rowing, a good oarsman will cruise at 5 knots, with sprints of 7 knots or more. The single will easily accommodate a big and tall oarsman, up to 300lbs. The Annapolis Wherry kit was updated in 2013 to include puzzle joints, pre-drilled wire holes, and bulkheads located with mortises and tenons for rapid, accurate assembly every time.

The Annapolis Wherry Tandem retains the essential qualities of the single. With double the horsepower (two rowers) but only 20% more wetted surface, it's fast enough to win races just as the smaller single Wherry does. It also functions as a single with an adult passenger, and of course you can row it all day solo if you don’t have a skilled sliding seat mate. Switching between tandem rowing, passenger, and single rowing modes takes just moments: wing nuts hold the sliding seat rigs in place. An optional cane seat drops into place in seconds for a passenger sitting astern: parasol and picnic basket optional.

This fast, shapely wherry is for serious sliding-seat rowers who are looking for open-water ability and enough payload for camp-cruising. A “wherry” is a pulling boat that falls somewhere between needle-thin racing shells and wide, sailboat-like rowboats. Wherries are the ride of choice for rowers who want speed but don’t want to confine themselves to the placid rivers that are the natural haunt of a racing shell. CLC's Expedition Wherry came about as a solution for fitness-oriented rowers who want to go out in cold or rough water, perhaps with camping gear. Designer John C. Harris, who has been designing, building, and enjoying sliding seat boats for 28 years, spent a lot of time tinkering with the hull lines to find the best compromise between speed, payload, and stability. The boat has lots of rocker, which gives the boat a nimble feel in waves, and as an added bonus keeps the wetted surface to a miminum. Most of the boat is decked in, with only a small "sump" area beneath the oarsman's heels to gather bilge water. There are four separate watertight compartments, all accessible through hatches for gear storage. The boat has enough stability, and the compartments provide enough buoyancy, that it's possible to climb back into the

cockpit after a capsize, bail out, and continue on your way. The official max payload is 423 pounds. Thus, a 200-pound oarsman could carry the equivalent of three infantry-sized backpacks worth of camping gear. (Of course, the lighter you pack, the faster the boat goes.) The standard flush deck hatches are large enough for tents, sleeping bags, and kitchen sinks of modest size.

As fine a small boat as you could ever transport on roof racks, the Skerry design combines elements of traditional working craft of the British Isles and Scandinavia, with a little bit of American Swampscott Dory thrown in. The genial blend of historical antecedents yields excellent performance under sail or oar, along with good looks and ease of construction in LapStitchTM plywood. Unusual in its competency both as a sailboat and as a rowing boat, you'll switch seamlessly between modes as the conditions suit. We can and have rowed this boat all day. "Beach cruising"–sailing and rowing by day, camping ashore by night–is the ultimate application for such a solid, weatherly, fun little boat. The Skerry's 450pound payload will accommodate two adults, with kids and/or dogs. The stock sprit rig is quick to assemble and set up, and all spars fit inside the boat. Also available are sloop and balanced-lug rigs, for racers and cruisers, respectively. With all three available rigs the Skerry is a great pleasure to sail, nicely balanced, and fast on all points.

There is not an ugly line on this boat. The sheer is beautiful and accented by the lines of the chines. They add interest and eye candy to an already appealing boat... I see myself in a Skerry, Piper perched in the Bow, Three Nuns smoldering in one of my vintage Dunhills, silently sailing down the shoreline on a reach trolling for cut-trout. Bliss would be mine.

If it's the most boat for the money you want, you can't beat a dory. Our Northeaster Dory, with just nine planks and a transom, manages to cram in more performance per dollar than any 17-footer has a right to deliver. The low parts-count makes this an ideal first boatbuilding project, without compromising on looks or ability. The Northeaster Dory's lovely proportions mimic the round-sided lapstrake dories that were ubiquitous in New England a hundred years ago. Like the hard-working long-line fishing dories, this hull has a narrow waterline for easy rowing, but sharply flared sides that add to the payload and offer strong secondary stability for sailing ability. Like the smaller Skerry, the Northeaster Dory is the rare smallcraft that excels at both sailing and rowing. It's small enough to be rowed by one person, but big enough for tandem rowing with two. A sliding seat can be added to all versions, or even two sliding seats if you leave the sailing components off. Under sail, the Northeaster Dory accelerates fast and sails dry, thanks to the flared bow and natural spray deflection of the LapStitchTM sides. A traditionally-proportioned, low-aspect sloop rig offers the most power for straight-line speed, but the simpler lug

If there's a guiding principal behind John C. Harris's energetically whimsical designs, it's "Small boats are the most fun for the least money." Fast is fun, too, and amply demonstrated by the new Outrigger Junior. Designed in 2003 for a proposed youth sail-training program that never gelled, Harris kept the original design name but tinkered with the lines for more than a decade before perfecting the concept and launching the first prototypes in 2013. "The result," he says, "is like catnip." Docile to handle yet blazing fast, the Outrigger Junior is outrageous good fun on the water. The Outrigger Junior is best described as a "Tahitian Outrigger," which is to say a finely proportioned sailing canoe that's asymmetrical, but tacks conventionally. The famous Malibu Outrigger of the 1950's and 1960's also gets a nod here, though the Outrigger Junior is a much more sophisticated boat. The outrigger layout enjoys many advantages in weight and engineering. It's less work to build and less weight than a catamaran of the same size and payload, yet the righting moment is higher. This means more speed for less money.

Lots and lots and lots of speed. Providing the motive force is a lateen sail of 165 square feet. A big sail, sure, but with a low center of effort, and simpler, cheaper hardware compared to the more common jib-headed sloop. Speeds will mount well into the teens with the right crew and conditions. Even with the outrigger layout's economy, there's quite a bit of boat to build and we've made it as easy as we can with a really tight-fitting kit, or full-sized plans. We offer several separate packages – hulls, rig, etc. – that plans or kit builders can purchase in any combination to suit their budget. Count on about 200 hours to put one of these together, followed by endless curiosity, admiration, and jealousy at the beach.

A quart in a pint pot, PocketShip has the legs to take you on real adventures. Drawn by John C. Harris expressly for his own use, PocketShip has become a surprise hit, with examples sailing on four continents and more than 50 under construction as of this writing. Perhaps it is because nothing quite like her can be bought, in fiberglass or any other material. Possessed of furious sailing ability on all points, PocketShip has startled more pretentious designs with her speed and agility. Yet comfort was paramount in the design brief, with a huge, dry cockpit, vast stowage (including a proper anchor well) and secure handling in all conditions. The spacious cabin, far bigger in person than the photos suggest, generates universal praise. Two adults may lounge and sleep below or wait out a twoday gale. A portable head stows beneath the cockpit, sliding forward into the cabin for use. The enclosed area of the cabin is identical to an average four-man tent, but drier, more private, and more secure.

page manual and a very tight kit. (We still recommend starting with a dinghy or kayak before diving into this one.) The feedback suggests that 600-700 hours is typical for construction, which adds up to something like nine months of weekends. Not bad for a real sailboat capable of serious coastal passagemaking. "PocketShip passes a crucial test for projects of this size and scope," says Harris. "And that is that it costs a LOT less to build this boat than it would to buy a production fiberglass pocket cruiser of equivalent ability." On our website you’ll find excellent videos, photography, and even a site devoted entirely to PocketShip and her many fans.

Go simple, and if that appeals to you then there is no more simple way to cruise than this design from John C. Harris. ...This is one dandy looking little boat. It's shapely, with lots of sheer, a pugnacious bow profile and sweet overall hull lines. – Robert H. Perry, Sailing Magazine, June 2009
