T
his year marks Chesapeake Light Craft's 30th anniversary.
"And how things have changed," I wrote in the first draft of this page. But really, the mission hasn't changed, only the scale. 30 years ago, CLC was laser-focused on helping out first-time boatbuilders. Nowadays, there are two dozen of us helping out amateur boatbuilders. And we use real lasers. Chesapeake Light Craft was founded in 1991 by Chris Kulczycki, whose experiments in kayak building led to a series of well-received magazine articles, and to his first book, "The Kayak Shop." A deluge of mail requesting kayak plans and kits followed. Chris, a shrewd and creative marketer, saw a business opportunity. Chesapeake Light Craft was off and running. In 1994, I was a 22-year-old college graduate, skinny, hungry, bonkers about boats, and elated to be making $8/hour building wooden boats at O'Connell's Wooden Boat Shop. I'd been building boats, designing boats, and dreaming about boats, day and night, since childhood.
John C. Harris works on the prototype
Mill Creek 13 kayak in 1995 Shortly after I started, Chris subcontracted the job of cutting CLC's kayak kits to O'Connell's Wooden Boat Shop, over on Maryland's rural Eastern Shore. This is the moment when I should invoke celestial voices, or write something about stars aligning. The truth is, my first exposure to the feast-and-famine cycle of custom boatbuilding terrified me. Mass producing kayak kits was less romantic, but it offered stability and a way to make a living in small boats.
By April 1995, demand for CLC's kits outpaced capacity. I abandoned the bohemian boat shop and shifted to an 1800 square-foot shop in Annapolis, Maryland, just in time for an explosion of interest in kayaking. As I write this, the shops, machinery bays, showroom, and offices now spread over more than 12,000 square feet. Along with dedicated spaces for CNC machines, laser cutters, and a mill shop, there's a dedicated boatbuilding classroom, and a shop for custom boatbuilding and prototyping. I purchased the company in late 1999, when Chris was ready to move on to new business ventures. Then and now, it felt like working at a toy factory. Along with the perennially popular kayak kits, I could indulge my interest in the design of efficient rowing, sailing, and powered craft. I invited talented and like-minded boat designers to join forces, and invested heavily in CLC's educational outreach. Thousands of first-time boatbuilders have built a boat in one of CLC's one-week classes. As of this writing, we've shipped more than 40,000 kits to more than 70 countries, not counting kits cut by our dealerships in the UK, France, Germany, Australia, and Japan. There have been adventures with bigger and more complex boat kits, but I remained convinced that the smallest and simplest boats offer the most joy per hour...and per dollar. Such boats are CLC's past and future. Thank you for indulging my 50-year love affair with small wooden boats. See you in the shop, and on the water!

Many Ways to Build!
Whether you are a professional who has built a hundred boats, or a trembling beginner without a C-clamp to your name, or someone in between, we've got a boatbuilding project for YOU.
Build it From a Kit We've shipped more than 40,000 of our meticulously prepared wooden boat kits to every state and more than 70 countries around the globe. With comprehensive instruction manuals and everything you need right there in the box, this is by far the most popular option. Construction locations are flexible. We've seen boats built on back decks, in living rooms, carports, dormitories, and even on the deck of a yacht halfway across the Atlantic (this happened). Kits are a great choice. The best part of our job here at CLC is the relationships we cultivate assisting builders throughout their projects. Technical support is free and unlimited.
Build it From Plans
There's a particular satisfaction derived from converting raw materials into a work of art. For these builders, time is not a factor; the boat is a legacy. Detailed plans have been a priority at CLC since 1991, and they get better every year. Our boat plans have been featured in scores of magazines ranging from Popular Mechanics to WoodenBoat. Plans choices are wide-ranging in scope, with options for first-timers, to complex projects for builders who know their way around a scale-rule. Nearly all of our plan sets feature instruction manuals with step-by-step instructions and photos, and most sets include full-sized patterns for every part. Just as with your kits, Tech support is just an email or call away.

Build it in a Class
Since 1994 we've led more build-your-own-boat classes than any company on the planet. Hundreds of classes, thousands of delighted students. Most classes are a week in length, and you take your own boat home at the end! Instructors aren't just professional boatbuilders; they're professional teachers. With an average class size of seven or eight students, you'll get all the individual attention you want. Most students tell us: "We could have just built one of your kits at home, but we knew that taking a week off for a class would guarantee that the thing gets built, and built right. It's great fun."
These days, builders working from plans for most of our designs receive full-sized patterns for evey part of the kit, as with the Teardrop Camper shown here
CLC’s Exclusive LapStitch™ Construction Our system combines the elemental and ancient grace of lapstrake hulls with proven stitch-and-glue construction. The strength of LapStitchTM joinery is such that these designs require relatively little structural fiberglass work, making them especially easy to build.
Guider Expedition Cruiser
No one debates the beauty or utility of lapstrake hulls. The long laps accentuate the lines of the hull, while the overlapping seams double the strength, essentially adding longitudinal stringers to a monocoque assembly. Old-fashioned lapstrake planking requires prodigious skill on the part of the boatbuilder, however, and little about this has changed for a thousand years. In 1997 Chesapeake Light Craft developed LapStitchTM to build lapstrake boats without molds, and without complex “rolling bevels” on the lapstrake planking. Using sophisticated computer design software, we design hulls that have a round-bottomed shape. Software “peels” the planks off the hull. A special joint is computer-milled where each strake meets the next. The strakes are wired together just like a stitch-and-glue kayak. When these joints are filled with epoxy, the resulting hull is remarkably stiff and strong and indistinguishable in strength or appearance from a traditional lapstrake hull. Thousands and thousands of completed CLC LapStitchTM hulls have proven the method.
Strip-Planked Construction Strip-planked boat designs require more woodworking and joinery compared to stitchNymph Canoe Kit
and-glue projects. We've done everything possible with our kits to make strip-planked projects accessible and fun. Strip-planked kits are comprised of computer-cut molds, a strongback, precision-milled bead-and-cove wood strips, and everything else you’ll need except for varnish and a paddle. Many builders start with complete kits, giving them everything they need. Others will just order our mold kits, choosing to mill their own strips and track down other supplies. Many will start from plans as "scratch-builders." Working from a kit, you’ll assemble the mold and strongback right out of the box, then staple (or clamp) cedar strips to the molds. The bead-and-cove feature of the strips means that each strip interlocks with the next, so you’ll build up your design on the molds, somewhat like laying bricks. Ordinary wood glue holds the strips together in the early stages. A fiberglass skin on the inside and outside makes the structure rigid, followed by coats of varnish for gloss and durability. Builders of our strip-planked boats are given broad latitude to interpret elements like hatch and cockpit design. Sketch out your own patterns of contrasting strips (we send you light, medium, and dark wood in whatever proportions you request), or work off one of many patterns suggested in Nick Schade's books: The Strip-Built Sea Kayak and Building Strip-Planked Boats. You are limited only by chops, patience, and creativity. Are strip-planked kayaks a good first boatbuilding project? If you have some background in woodworking, yes. Newbies to wood shavings might want to try a stitch-and-glue kayak first.

See us on the road, try out one of our designs! We have demos and events in Annapolis scheduled regularly. We’re also the only boat kit company with a busy travel schedule. Our ”big rig,” which can haul up to two dozen completed boats, is on the road about twenty weeks of the year, visiting shows and demo spots from Maine to Florida to Washington to California, with many stops between. Check our website for the latest shows and demos, and come try before you build. clcboats.com/news-and-events
Specifications Hull Specs “Hull Weight” is not the weight of an empty, stripped hull, but the weight you can actually expect to have to lift onto your car. This weight includes deck rigging, footbraces, seat, and other typical fittings. The lugubrious fine print: your results may vary. Boats can be lighter or heavier depending upon options, construction techniques, wood density and other variables. Cockpit Size refers to the opening in the cockpit coaming that is provided in the kit as standard equipment. Recommended Paddler Weight This should be considered a rough guide. The weight ranges shown will be comfortable, but as you reach the high and low limits other variables like height and shoe size become important considerations. Maximum Shoe Size This is expressed in men’s sizes and assumes the paddler is shod in the preferred neoprene booties. Larger shoe sizes are sometimes possible for more athletic paddlers. Custom cockpits are available on some boats; call for details. Maximum Payload This is the safe total load of the boat and differs from “Paddler Weight.” A paddler whose weight approaches the “Max Payload” will have a high center of gravity. Properly stowed gear, however, does not affect stability.

Chesapeake
Chesapeake 17: Jason Dique
The Chesapeake series, which includes six singles, two tandems, and a triple, has spent more than two decades earning a reputation as highly capable wilderness cruisers. In skilled hands the Chesapeakes cope easily with ugly combinations of wind and wave and inhospitable shorelines. For beginners they are easy-going, comfortable, and startlingly fast. Chesapeakes have won their class in the Everglades Challenge, and are a go-to choice for serious expeditions. Photos show them above the Arctic Circle, traversing the Sea of Cortez, and in fleets of a dozen on overnight paddling tours. Trips of 2500 miles or more are recorded. The genial combination of handling, speed, capacity, comfort, and ease of construction explains why Sea Kayaker Magazine gave the Chesapeake 17 the readers’ choice award for “Best Kayak Kit.” The Chesapeake 14 is perfect for kids or small adults. The Chesapeake 17 and 18 are cargo-haulers, best for people over 200lbs or very large camping loads or both. The Chesapeake Double and Triple share a hull, with different deck layouts. In spite of their volume and enormous payloads, the low wetted surface of the Double and Triple have resulted in numerous race victories, often embarrassing more pretentious

multi-cockpit designs. For full-on sprinting or adventure racing, there is the 22-foot by 22 -inch Chesapeake Sport Tandem, a kayak for athletes. Some of the Chesapeake’s appeal after all these years of evolution in stitch-and-glue kayak design is that anyone who can read a set of plans can easily lengthen, lower, raise, or extend the hull or modify the deck. Some of our newer kayaks are easier to build, but their intricate slot together designs don’t allow customization.

Canoe/Kayak SailRig
8' x 48", 86 lbs, 250 lb max capacity (shown here, adapted to the Chesapeake 17)
Sailboats benefit from being light and easily-driven. Kayaks are light and easily-driven. Thus the enduring popularity of sailing kayaks, and trimaran-conversions like this one. Crossbeams and outriggers may be adapted to any design in this book 33 inches wide or less. (Just don’t forget to add a sailing rudder capable of handling high speeds.) Installation is quick and easy, with three sail sizes available for performance ranging from "relaxed" to "hairy." The crossbeam spacing allows a full paddling stroke. One especially valuable feature of the CLC SailRig design is that once removed, little to none of the apparatus remains behind to sully your nice kayak. You can paddle or sail as the spirit, and the wind, moves you.

Mill Creek 16.5 Hybrid: 16' 6" x 33", 62 lbs, 230-400 lbs combined
Mill Creek 13: 13' x 29", 40 lbs, 125-250 lb paddler
The first Mill Creek appeared in 1995. Based on the double-paddle canoes of the 1930’s, the design has a timeless quality that explains why the series has remained in production and unchanged for 25 years. At around 40 pounds, the Mill Creek 13 is a pip to throw in the water for casual paddling, fishing, and photography.
Flush Hatch Kit These hatch kits eliminate webbing hold-downs and allow an
unbroken woodgrain pattern on your deck. Kit includes all hardware and support structure for two hatches; you’ll use the wood from your own deck. Shearwaters, Wood Ducks, and all Guillemot kayak kits include flush hatches.
The tandem Mill Creek 16.5 has a huge following thanks to its versatility. Like the Mill Creek 13, a simple sailing rig may be added. With a drop-in sliding seat unit and a pair of 9'6" oars it rows handsomely as an open-water single wherry. And of course, it seats two for comfortable day paddling. Construction is slightly more complex than the Mill Creek’s 21st-century descendants, the Wood Ducks, but most Mill Creek builders are first-timers. A “hybrid” option substitutes a strip-planked deck and tickles the woodworkers.
Complete Kit Includes Computer-cut and drilled BS1088 okoume, bead-and-cove cedar strips in an array of colors (hybrid option), deck forms (hybrid option), epoxy kit, fiberglass for inside and out, hardware, traditional wooden seats (upgrade to a Creature Comfort Seat), and Keepers footbraces. All kits include a complete step-by-step instruction manual. Sailing Component Kit Includes Leeboard, mast step and partner, thwart, 10-foot aluminum mast tube (in sections), and hardware. You’ll need our Double Rudder and a sail to complete this sailing kit.

For years the kayak arms race was about long, narrow, tippy kayaks. Comparison to the spear-like aboriginal West Greenland hunting kayaks was a sort of purity test, and we have lots of those if you need to flee a charging walrus or win a sprint race. But the Wood Ducks represent the kind of paddling most of us do: pottering down the creek, tackle box or camera in our lap, fishing or birding as the spirit moves us. The softening of the classical Inuit kayak’s hard edges into a more well-rounded, everyday sort of kayak is fraught with compromise. Will the result be tubby and boring? Not in the hands of longtime CLC designer Eric Schade. The Wood Ducks offer brisk, responsive handling with a sharp, compact design that is easy to transport.
Wood Duck Double: 14' x 30", 60lbs, 200-400 lbs combined
Choose from four singles and a tandem. The kids revel in the 8-foot Wood Duckling, while plus-sized paddlers are well matched to the super-high-capacity Wood Duck 14. The Wood Duck 12 fits just about everybody from 80 to 250 pounds, probably the closest thing to an all-things-to-everybody kayak in this corner of the universe. These are easy kayaks to build. Wood Ducks are a perennial favorite in our one-week build-your-own classes, in which basic assembly is complete in about 45 hours, ready for sanding, coats of varnish, and outfitting.

Wood Duck 10 Hybrid: 10' x30", 36 lbs, 60-200 lb paddler
Wood Duck Hybrid Take the cheerful Wood Duck design and swap the standard sapele plywood deck for narrow strips of wood, and you have the Wood Duck Hybrid. It’s a hybrid of plywood stitch-and-glue construction and the slightly more demanding strip-planking method. The upshot is an extra grace-note of beauty. Best of all, the deck design is up to you. Artful sweeps of light and dark strips, herringbone patterns, understated pinstripes: your choices are limited only by your imagination.
Wood Duck 12 Hybrid: 12' x 30", 40 lbs, 80-250 lb paddler
The combination of plywood and strip-planked construction is a great stepping stone to more complex boatbuilding projects. The hull goes together in hours. Computer-cut molds are placed in the hull, and the strip-planked deck is assembled atop the molds. The strips provided in the kit are machined with a “bead and cove” feature, allowing you to cut and fit strips to the desired pattern rather like laying a tongue-and-groove floor. The assembly manual holds your hand through a simple strip deck design; wood butchers with more skill might escalate. No performance is sacrificed in opting for a hybrid deck. Hybrid and standard Wood Ducks weigh the same, are equally durable, and offer the same lovely handling on the water.
I just completed my first kayak...Building this kayak was the fulfillment of a lifelong dream. I can’t wait to open the boxes that are sitting in my shop, and start on the second one. Wood Duck 14 hybrid (not shown): 13' 9' x 30", 52lbs, 200-350 lb paddler

Shearwater
16 & 17: Mark Alavosius, Emerald Bay, Lake Tahoe, CA
Shearwater For me, 2005 is an interesting deflection point in sea kayak design. The almost hysterical growth of the sport had eased. Whereas in the 1990's kayak outfits like CLC had marched out traditional sea kayaks as quickly as we could draw them, by 2005 just about everything had been tried, for good or ill. Now there was less new design and more contemplative refinement. The Shearwater kayaks and their derivatives are a case in point. Nothing new by 2005 standards, but finely polished descendants of a thousand homebuilt kayaks, incorporating every evolutionary good idea designer Eric Schade had compiled, and quite a few of our own. Tests of the first Shearwater 17 were a delight to all. The 17 was fast without being skittish, tracked strongly without being hard to turn, and had a cockpit that fit like a Recaro racing seat: supportive enough for aggressive handling, comfortable enough for long days. Eric nailed it, and the 17's design was never modified. I recall the thrill of pushing the Shearwater harder and harder in surfing conditions, yet the stern wouldn't break loose and dump me in a nasty broach. It was challenging, fun, and inspired great confidence.
Shearwater 14: 14' 6" x 23", 39 lbs, 100-150 lb paddler
Shearwater 16: 16' 2" x 23", 42 lbs, 120-190 lb paddler
Shearwater 17: 17' x 22", 44 lbs, 150-220 lb paddler
Available in a variety of sizes, Shearwaters are for athletic paddlers who might do anything from light touring to playing in waves. They run a little small, that much less to lug around or spin on a wave crest. Shearwater Double: 18' 6" x 27", 68 lbs, 300-500 lbs combined
I’m very pleased with the construction & performance of the Shearwater 17 kayak - handled great and carried all my gear. I’ll make another one this winter. Maybe a Shearwater 16 for my wife? Thanks for providing great boats! – Mark A., Reno, NV

Shearwater 16 Hybrid: 16' 2" x 23", 42 lbs, 120-190 lb paddler
Shearwater Hybrid Just as the Wood Duck Hybrids substitute strip-planked decks for plywood, Hybrid Shearwaters give builders with a little woodworking experience the opportunity to augment and personalize their boats. Since the plywood hull and the CNC-cut temporary forms serve as the mold for the deck, many hours are saved compared to building a strip-planked kayak.
17Hybrid: Lewis Blakely
Since you’ll be cutting and fitting the strip-planking, some familiarity with edge tools is assumed. The Shearwater Hybrid assembly manual, however, assumes nothing; it is as complete and detailed a guide to this style of construction as has ever been set to paper. The Shearwater 14 is best for kids and small-statured adults. The Shearwater 16 is great for folks around 150lbs, while the Shearwater 17 will take paddlers of average build up to 220lbs.

Shearwater Sport/Hybrid/Sectional
Sectional Shearwater Sport: 14' 6" x 25", 48 lbs, 100-240 lb paddler
Which kayak for you? Will it be something sleek and edgy and challenging to paddle, or a beamy and benign day-cruiser? A cargo-hauler or a sprinter? Some paddlers have fleets of kayaks to suit all occasions. The rest of us should take a long look at the Shearwater Sport. Eric Schade has threaded the needle in designing a kayak that is a jack of all trades. Master of most. There’s enough beam and stability to be welcoming to beginners. Helmeted experts showing off for the cameras enjoy the Shearwater Sport’s agility in the surf. There’s enough speed to keep up with any gaggle of touring kayaks. The 14'6" length is more consonant with limited storage (and construction) spaces. Rugged scantlings and voluminous storage make this an ideal back-country expedition machine. Builders ready to sharpen planes and unsheathe their pull-saws can opt for the Shearwater Sport Hybrid, with a strip-planked deck.
Shearwater Sport: 14' 6" x 25", 45 lbs, 100-240 lb paddler
A most interesting option is the Sectional, which unbolts at watertight bulkheads for transport inside a small hatchback car and for storage in an apartment, garage, or garden shed. If anything, the sectional is sturdier than the standard, with the same cockpit and storage, opening up delightful possibilities for small-footprint adventuring.

Guillemot Kayaks The ordinary progression of the kayak builder is to start with relatively simple plywood designs, then move on to more elaborate strip-planked shapes. Hull planking comprised of narrow, flexible wooden strips allows freeform shapes without compromise in looks or performance. This niche, of the high-performance strip-planked sea kayak, has been the domain of Nick Schade’s Guillemot Kayaks for almost thirty years. A singularly talented paddler, designer, and builder, Nick has brought the strip-planked kayak to such a pitch of refinement that one of his boats hangs in the permanent collection of the Museum of Modern Art. Not content to win beauty contests, he wrings every drop of performance from his designs through exhaustive on-water testing. The descendants of this long and careful evolution are on these pages, ready to be built at home from kits or plans.

We’ve corralled Nick’s current designs into four marques: the Auks, the Guillemots,
Guillemot: 17' x 21", 41 lbs, 150-220 lb paddler
The Auks are the easiest of the Guillemot Collection to build, and most are aimed at recreational paddling. The 10-, 11-, and 14-foot versions are excellent analogs to our Wood Duck kayaks, while 17-, 18-, and 21-foot models appeal to cruisers.
Guillemot S: 16' x 20", 40 lbs, 100-175 lb paddler
the Night Herons, and the MicroBootleggers.
The Guillemot series includes many of Nick’s popular sea-touring kayaks, in a variety of shapes and sizes to fit paddlers of every description. The original 17-foot Guillemot is probably one of the most-constructed strip-planked kayaks of all time. Guillemot Play: 16' 5" x 22", 38 lbs, 110-190 lb paddler
The Night Herons are a more recent development and are intended for athletic paddling, playing in waves, or light, fast touring. Broad interpretations of the West Greenland kayaks of antiquity, these designs will reward careful builders and energetic paddlers. The lithe and slippery Petrel is especially notable for its acrobatic ability and is the goto kayak for many serious “narrow boat” paddlers. A thoughtfully detuned version, the Petrel Play, retains the longer boat’s charms but is more accessible to new paddlers. If you’re looking for more of a challenge either in the boatshop or on the water, a stripplanked kayak is a worthy and rewarding project. CNC-cut molds, precision-machined bead-and-cove strips in your choice of colors, and unlimited tech support guarantee success for patient woodworkers.
Expedition Single: 19' x 21", 42 lbs, 150-250 lb paddler
Guillemot L: 18' x 23", 40 lbs, 190-275 lb paddler

11' Little Auk: 11' x 28", 31 lbs, 120-200 lb paddler
The kayak is more than beautiful, it’s fast, quick to steer, easy to keep straight, and just a lot of fun to paddle. We’re happy to be done with pure glass boats, and look forward to getting a lot of use from these [wood] boats. – Clyde R., Shoreview, MN

Tandem microBootlegger
Solo microBootlegger
Baby Bootlegger was a race-winning wooden powerboat of the 1920’s, designed by George Crouch. The design is so iconic and beautiful that to this day it’s a touchstone for the fusion of sculpture and naval architecture. Riffing on Baby Bootlegger’s unforgettable retroussé stern and rounded decks, Nick Schade designed the microBootlegger as a curvaceous decked canoe. Whereas the priceless original racer now resides in a million-dollar boathouse, you can build your own kinetic sculpture for a couple grand. microBootlegger Sport (not shown): 14' x 26", 33 lbs, 175-200 lb paddler Solo microBootlegger: 14' x 26", 33 lbs, 175-200 lb paddler

The popularity of the tandem microBootlegger led, logically enough, to the Solo microBootlegger for single paddlers. A skin-on-frame version of the Solo microBootlegger is in the works.

Petrel SG-L: 16' x 25", 40 lbs, 250-350 lb paddler
Petrel Play SG: 14' x 23", 40 lbs, 100-220 lb paddler
Critical acclaim and widespread popularity of the gymnastic Petrel design led to calls for a much easier-tobuild plywood version, featuring Nick Schade’s instantly-recognizable sense of line and proportion. While faster and simpler to build than the original stripper, this is still a stitch-and-glue kayak with a fairly high parts-count, requiring a little more experience and patience to assemble. The Petrel SG and the shorter, less-demanding Petrel Play SG are unique among stitch-and-glue kayak designs in combining a multi-chined forward section, for buoyancy in waves, with a hard-chined aft section for tracking, stability, and carving turns. Such treats as recessed airtight hatches, recessed cockpit, and a retractable skeg (Petrel SG only) are standard in the kits.

Much of the popularity of SUPs is a result of their accessibility. Anyone can enjoy a good paddleboard on the first day, whereas traditional surfing requires years of practice. We think the best paddleboards should grow with the paddler, should be able to manage a bit of bumpy water, and should fit a broad range of body shapes and sizes. We’ve brought our kayak expertise over to the Kaholos, giving them a wave-slicing nose that contributes to speed without turning them into submarines. Just the right touch of rocker and bearing aft makes them forgiving to paddle and easy to keep on track. Kaholos have won many races in various classes, yet most builders are new to stand-up paddleboards. Construction is simple, readily approachable for first-time builders. Stop by the fabric store and pick out some fun patterns to embed beneath the fiberglassed deck; the instructions tell you how.
I recently finished my Kaholo 14 paddleboard. We held a launching party at Jordan Lake near Apex, NC this past weekend. It was exciting to build and big fun to paddle. I look forward to the many hours of enjoyment my family will get from the board in the years to come. – Tim B., Apex, NY

23 years ago, the Sassafras Canoe designs were among our early experiments with LapStitch , the new boatbuilding technology. With more than a thousand built, we gave the designs a top-to-bottom overhaul between 2012 and 2014. The new Sassafras 16 features more stability and a larger payload without any reduction in speed. The Sassafras 12 has a springier sheerline and a finer entry at the bow. Both are easier to build than ever, and rank with the easiest of all our kits for the first-time boatbuilder. TM
Throw the whole family in the Sassafras 16 for casual outings, or load it with gear for overnights. The ultralight Sassafras 12 is a classic “pack canoe,” light enough to carry in one hand while you carry your fishing rod and tackle box in the other.

Nymph 12 Canoe
Nymph Canoe J. Henry Rushton was an early character in the late 19th-century Sportsman movement, urging the new middle class to get outdoors and go exploring in his fantastically light and beautiful little canoes. The Nymph 10 and 12 are 21st-century variations on the theme. The 10-footer can be built as light as 20 pounds! These canoes are meant for exploring backwaters or hidden fishing holes. Their extreme lightness translates into frequent, impulsive use: you can throw them on the car even when you’re tired, whereas a heavier boat might find you debating between an evening on the couch or an evening on the water. I know which one I’d choose.

Peeler Skiff with Center Console
Peeler Skiff There have been motor skiffs as long as there have been motors. Innumerable designs for dory-skiffs, flatties, modified dories, and on and on, too many to list them all. What, then, could we bring to the world of outboard skiffs that hadn’t already been done a thousand times? I found there was a wide gap in the field for a stable skiff with fast, easy construction, durable enough to live outdoors for a lifetime, and light enough for towing with small cars. Technically the Peeler is a “dory skiff,” a type distinguished by relatively narrow, flat bottoms and sharply flaring sides. The bottom shape is easy to build and fast through the water even with smaller outboards. Flared sides make her seaworthy, stable, dry, and a cargo-hauler. The design exceeded all expectations, making 22 knots with a 15hp four-stroke outboard while passing stringent US Coast Guard tests for safety. A great many have been built, most with the optional center console. She’ll plane with 8hp; 15hp is max. 9.9hp is probably close to perfect.

Oxford Shell II
Oxford Shell II CLC’s Oxford Shell dropped in 1996 and did not waver in popularity for 22 years. In 2018 we introduced the Oxford Shell II, an evolution of the original. Intended for rec-racing, workouts, or ocean rowing, the Oxford Shell II is pitched a bit more towards speed and performance compared to the original. Reasonably athletic rowers will use it for training. Experienced rowers will find it a competitive shell for “masters” regattas. Without sacrificing smooth-water speed, we went to a lot of trouble to design a hull that can handle waves and chop. A thoroughly modern rec shell, elegant and worthy. Effortless, startling speed. I’ve been rowing the Annapolis Wherry for 24 years and it still surprises me every time with its acceleration, the absence of wake, and the ease with which it picks its way through waves and chop. The single has seen only minor tweaks since it launched in 1997 as our first LapStitch boat; there has been nothing to improve. With more than a few thousand kits sold and the build-your-own classes always full, the Annapolis Wherry Single is a perennial favorite, the essence of a great DIY project. TM
The Annapolis Wherry Tandem came along in 2010 and works beautifully for two rowers, as well as providing an option for use as a large touring single or as a single with a passenger seated astern. (Wicker basket and parasol in hand.)

A great boat, they say, is one that makes you turn back for one last look as you walk down the dock. Neither a pretentious exercise machine nor a weedgathering sluggard, the Chester Yawl just does everything without fuss. She’s as pretty a fixed-seat pulling boat as you’ll find on the waterfront, but form follows function, and everything is there for a reason. (Calling a rowboat a “pulling boat” is like calling a horse a “steed.”) Features include three rowing stations, allowing solo rowing, tandem rowing, or rowing with a passenger. Full positive flotation is built in, and floorboards are standard. A rowing seat borrowed from L. Francis Herreshoff 's designs allows you to clear the interior to take a nap, or even camp-cruise overnight as many have. She’s plenty fast enough to benefit from a sliding seat if you like to break a sweat when you row.
15' x 42", 100 lbs, 450 lb max capacity
The kit is moderately intricate but still approachable for beginners. A complete refresh of the kit in 2013 eased assembly; now that all parts have matching slots and tabs, you don’t need to own a tape measure to build this boat.
It exceeded my expectations on how stable and easy to row it was. The grandkids couldn’t wait to go for a ride even though it was pretty cool [outside]. The smiles say it all. One of the grandkids now tells me that he wants to build a boat together this year. Great job on the design and how well everything fits. – Wally A., Eugene, OR

Eastport Pram/Nesting
Eastport Pram: 7' 9" x 48", 65 lbs, 375 lb max capacity
A truly great dinghy is as rare as a great general. If your idea of a tender is rubber and filled with air, you are missing out on an ancient aesthetic experience. A deflatable will putter from ship to shore, as forgettable as a rental car. A beautiful wooden dinghy does it in style, with an efficiency and grace that seems lost on the modern yachtie. Like “slow food,” printed books, and things you build yourself, a really fine tender urges you to slow down and enjoy the experience while you can. Both the standard 7'9" Eastport Pram and its "nesting" sister deliver the goods. Possessed of spunky good looks, a nice long glide under oars, multiple adult payloads, and riotously fun handling under sail, this is a dinghy for small-boat snobs. Nesting Pram: 7' 9" x 48", 75 lbs, 375 lb max capacity
Eastport Ultralight The Eastport Ultralight drops 21 inches of length, dispenses with most of the interior fittings (and a sailing rig) and has lighter scantlings. This reduces the weight to an easy-lifting 40 pounds. The perfect tender for smaller motherships. Eastport Ultralight Dinghy: 6' x 40", 40 lbs, 400 lb max capacity

Passagemaker Dinghy/Take Apart The Passagemaker’s ancestors are Scandinavian. Lapstrake prams like this have been used for work and pleasure along those rugged coasts forever. In 20th-century Sweden, racing classes grew up around finely-proportioned sloop-rigged prams much like this one. At the instigation of Passagemaker Magazine, I drew this dinghy as a rebuttal to the lowly inflatable. It would be an elegant boat that could hang in davits on a big trawler and still carry a 650-pound load safely. A competing stew of requirements, including sailing ability and the large payload, resulted in a serendipitous combination of stability and low wetted surface. The upshot is delightful sailing ability, fast and fun on all points. Indeed, far more of these have been built as family daysailers than are hanging in davits on big trawlers. It wouldn’t be much of a dinghy without decent rowing performance, and heaven forfend, the ability to ship a small outboard. In the Take-Apart version, the bow comes off to allow compact storage ashore or afloat.
The dinghy sails better than I ever would have expected. I used it for the first time a few weeks ago and there is little that can be improved on. It goes upwind very well, of course flies on a reach and goes dead downwind silently. – Martin S., Woodside, NY

Passagemaker Dinghy: Eric & Linda Mihata sailing Timothy Lake, OR
Tenderly Dinghy Just a few years ago, if you wanted a traditional stem dinghy that looks like a British day boat from the 1920s, you were stuck building it over a mold using complex techniques. Instead, it’s possible to assemble Tenderly’s hull in about 50 hours. Total build time, including the finish, is around 200 hours. Rigged with a large, efficient balanced lug sail, she’s sporty and responsive on all points. She also rows well with one, two, or three passengers, and moves nicely with a 2hp outboard. Wood-epoxy composite construction ensures rugged durability.
My 21-year-old son has dreamed of sailing since he was a boy. In June 2017 we bought a base Tenderly boat kit and made many great memories building it together. This summer we purchased the sailing kit...Jack’s dream of sailing finally came to fruition. Thank you for a wonderful project we will both cherish forever.
10' x 52", 130 lbs, 425 lb max capacity
The basic hull weighs just over 100 pounds, making it heavier than its cousins the Eastport Pram and Passagemaker. The weight is average for a dinghy of this size, shape, and displacement. By increasing the beam and displacement a bit, we’ve made Tenderly a lot more practical as a working dinghy. The combination of nice lines and ample stability results in a terrific little sailing boat. There’s plenty of sprawling room for two adults or a bunch of kids. The boat is fast and stiff and in general a joy to sail. Not all builders will sail the boat, as it rows and powers with grace, but the base kit includes the daggerboard trunk and mast step to make the conversion easy if desired. “Spacered inwales,” solid timber breasthooks, and quarter knees are standard in Tenderly kits, among other upscale features. Traditional floorboards are an option, doubtless a very popular one.

Lighthouse Tender Peapod This design is modeled on the “peapods” indigenous to Maine. “Peapod” is a somewhat amorphous term for a double-ended rowing-sailing boat, used for inshore lobstering, fishing, and general utility such as tending lighthouses. Thus the design name: Lighthouse Tender. Peapods are stable enough to allow the crew to stand and retrieve heavy lobster pots over the side. Rowing qualities are central to the design, but sailing rigs were added whenever much distance needed to be covered. Stable and easily driven, they make fine sailboats. Here is all of the Maine peapod’s subtlety of shape and character synthesized into a kit that can be built easily using stitch-and-glue techniques, without a complicated mold or complex joinery. The Lighthouse Tender rows easily with up to three adults. Sailing qualities, with either single- or twin-masted rigs, are sublime, upwind and down. It’s stable and, like its traditional forebears, carries a heavy load. Though the Lighthouse Tender is 18" shorter than the Skerry, its payload is 45% larger, at 650lbs.

Skerry with Sprit Sailing Rig
Skerry Boats that both row and sail equally well are viciously hard to draw. Sailing and rowing each require many features that are mutually exclusive. The Skerry manages it. She sails as well as any boat in this size and weight class, but you can row her all day. While technically a Swampscott dory, the Skerry recalls many features of Scandinavian double-enders, especially in the flared sides, narrow bottom, and lapstrake planking. (In old Norse, “skerry” referred to a “small boat for two.”) Her skinny waterline means that she glides along under oars, but when heeled under sail she gains stability quickly. Driven hard in rough conditions, the Skerry dances with joy. Capsizes are very rare.
Skerry: Emmanuel Conrath, Brittany, France

Three rigs are available, from the simple Norse sprit sail to a sloop that turns the Skerry into something like a racing dinghy. Three-quarters of the builders choose the balanced lug, a great combination of performance and convenience.

Jimmy Skiff II A fine skiff to take you here, there, and everywhere: that’s the Jimmy Skiff II. Twenty years of producing the 1998-era Jimmy Skiff taught us a few things, including that rowing and sailing qualities are oh-so-nice, but an option for an outboard engine is always first on everyone’s list.
13'2" x 52", 150 lbs, 525 lb max capacity
There was a long gestation, but we pulled it off. The Jimmy Skiff II rows great, sails great, and has pleasant qualities under outboard power. Though the same length and beam as the first Jimmy Skiff, the new boat is faster, more stable, and carries a larger payload, over 500 pounds. Instead of sitting on the floor, you have bench seating. The benches, by the way, conceal ample flotation to exceed Coast Guard requirements for buoyancy in a powered vessel. Those looking for a super-versatile utility skiff will be hard-pressed to find a better design.

Northeaster Dory Today a family looking for casual recreation on the water might buy a Boston Whaler. A hundred years ago they would have bought a dory like this. Dories are an essentially American creation, developed as working craft, famous for long-line fishing in all conditions, then evolving into recreational craft around the turn of the last century. Dories were, and are, a lot of boat for the money. They carry big loads despite their compact size, even in rough waters. They're quick and inexpensive to build. The Northeaster Dory is a 21st-century interpretation of the “Nahant Dory” from John Gardner’s excellent historical text, The Dory Book. Instead of sawn planks and rivets, marine plywood is CNC-machined and glued together using our LapStitchTM scheme. The hull is assembled in two days. Layers of epoxy and fiberglass add strength and durability.
17' x 56", 100 lbs, 800 lb max capacity
Northeaster Dories have earned a reputation as reliable expedition craft. They’ve been rowed to Alaska, won their class in 300-mile Watertribe races, and camp-cruised in Maine. A handy and fast sailboat, the Northeaster Dory also rows with the best of its type as a single or as a tandem. Many are used in rowing club fleets for training and racing.

Southwester Dory After years of requests for a Northeaster Dory with an outboard engine, I finally did something about it. Tweaking the hull shape to handle the additional load and fitting positive flotation consistent with US Coast Guard rules resulted in a stretch from 17'0" to 19' 8".
18'10" x 62", 250 lbs, 800 lb max capacity
While payloads are similar to its smaller and simpler sister, the Southwester Dory is a much more expedition-ready boat. Fitted with a boom tent, two can sleep on the bench seats amidships. There is vast watertight storage for gear fore and aft. A proper pivoting centerboard allows you to sail blithely across the shoals. With its cat-yawl rig the Southwester Dory is fast and weatherly, a terrific daysailer or beach-cruiser. The outboard is mounted in a sturdy watertight well amidships, convenient to the skipper. (The outboard kicks up and the aperture is sealed for a clean bottom while sailing. For that matter, the outboard well is an optional standalone module; sailors and rowers don’t have to install it.) Leave the rig ashore and fit a canvas bimini, and the Southwester Dory becomes a classy motor-launch. The Southwester Dory’s efficient, slippery hull and one of the new generation of electric outboards make a killer combination.
The design is exactly as described and went together with a precision that speaks very well to your commitment to craft. –Gene S., Boca Raton, FL Base Kit Includes Computer-cut and drilled BS1088 okoume parts, hardwood rails and trim, thwart, fiberglass and epoxy kit, plus hardware including one set of oarlocks and sockets. PocketShip
14' 10" x 75", 800 lbs, 1600 lb max capacity
Waterfront homes average about $150/square foot in the US as of this writing. If you have your own mobile patch of waterfront in the form of a trailerable pocket cruiser, million-dollar views are yours at a steep discount. If you have the ambition to sail over the horizon but a budget that keeps you home, a PocketShip stashed in the garage is your ticket. Exactly fourteen years ago the first PocketShip emerged from the building shed. There had been no market research, no polls, no focus groups; it was simply a boat I wanted for myself. She was designed to weigh no more on the trailer than my 4-cylinder Honda could tow, and to have a roomy cockpit and cabin. Above all she was to handle well. REALLY well. PocketShip #1 has been sailed hard and is one of the rare designs I feel no impulse to improve. She’ll claw to windward when it’s blowing old boots, but ghosts along on a zephyr so happily that I rarely ship the outboard engine. With four adults in the cockpit (a payload I never anticipated) she seems to brush off physics and boils ahead, often embarrassing larger boats. In the presence of witnesses she has reeled off seven knots, a speed/length ratio of almost 2.0. The amount of sprawling room both in the cabin and on deck is unusual for boats this size. By my count there are 17 comfortable places on PocketShip for a tall adult to sit. It’s a commitment to build a boat of this displacement. Beginners should proceed with caution. Those who persevere will soon be off cruising for a lot less than $150/square foot.

CLC Teardrop Camper
CLC Teardrop Camper
CLC Teardrop Camper w/o ICC: 8' 1/4" x 66" x 45", 176 lbs
As cars get smaller, storage space more expensive, and recreational time more precious, a new appreciation is growing for the efficiency of really good teardrop campers. Teardrop campers are intended to be a big step up from tent camping, not miniature Winnebagos. Imagine pulling up to your campsite, and instead of wrestling with tent poles, you open the door, climb in, and you’re lulled Galley Module to sleep by the pattering of the rain on the roof and the gentle hum of the ventilation fans. The idea of a build-it-yourself minimalist camper is not new. I’ve seen articles about buildit-yourself teardrops as far back as the 1930’s. Noting that many resemble upside-down boats, it wasn’t much of a leap to design a sleek and lightweight teardrop that makes use of computer-cut kit technology and modern wood-epoxy assembly techniques. Everything clicked. As of 2021, we’ve shipped 700 Teardrop Camper kits. The CLC Teardrop Camper is designed around a 60" x 80" queen-sized camping mattress. Two tall adults may sprawl with ease in the airy cabin. Headroom is 41", so you’ll wait out nasty weather propped up with a good book and tunes on the stereo, enjoying the view out the big acrylic windows while five vents keep air moving.

designed specifically for the Teardrop. On this trailer, the all-up weight with typical outfitting is around 550 pounds. It tows so lightly that the effect on gas mileage is negligible. When the prototype was towed to Texas and back behind a 2008 Honda Fit, 31mpg or better was observed.
Integrated Cargo Carrier Kit or Plans
Other options include a cargo container fitted beneath the Teardrop (above), a storage box on the trailer tongue, a galley cabinet module, an interior liner, and a roof rack system for carrying boats, bikes, and gear.

Astern under the hatchback is the galley (or kitchen, for landsmen). With lots of storage and space for a stove and other essentials, this is another giant leap up from a tent. There's room for a 12-volt battery to run lights and fans while off the grid. We put a solar panel on ours, which keeps the battery topped up for a weekend, as well as an inverter for when plug-in power is available. The CLC Teardrop Camper is intended for amateur builders. Exhaustive efforts were taken with the documentation so that folks working with epoxy and fiberglass for the first time can plunge in with confidence. Computer-cut marine plywood parts are dropped into a simple building jig, stitched together with copper wire stitches, then reinforced at the seams with epoxy. Two layers of fiberglass on the exterior ensure a tough, durable finish that can handle gravel thrown at highway speeds. Assembly time averages around 250 hours, depending on the level of outfitting and how shiny you want the finish. Some are painted, lit with inexpensive lanterns, and carry a boombox for tunes. Others we’ve seen are varnished all around and sport flat-screen TVs and a refrigerated storage box. The trailer isn’t included in the basic kit. We designed the CLC Teardrop Camper to fit on just about any small trailer, whether it’s a cheap mail-order flatbed or an old boat trailer. We offer an aluminum trailer

Sophisticated Designs for Sophisticated Builders Over the last 25 years, CLC's design team have created, or been commissioned to create, larger and/or more complex boat designs. The boats in this portfolio have a variety of backstories and range from the tiny Nesting Expedition Dinghy to the 31-foot proa Madness. Since these designs are often well-documented in the press, we get many requests for plans and kits. The dilemma: many of these boats don't fall in with CLC's principles of easy-and-affordable-to-build boats. A dilemma! At length we settled upon a solution: For this fleet of designs, we would bring the plans and documentation up to a level of detail that meets or exceeds current standards of wooden boat plans. It took us several years. A combination of detailed architectural drawings, illustrated assembly guides, and full-sized patterns ensure that boatbuilders comfortable reading plans have all the information they need to build boats in our ProKit series. All of the boats in our ProKit collection are finished designs and have been tested extensively, often with multiple prototypes. Some will eventually acquire extensive assembly manuals, and thus graduate into CLC's main repertory. Meanwhile, those comfortable with wood-epoxy boatbuilding and working from drawings will find some real gems here..

Outrigger Junior Designed in 2003 for a proposed youth sailing program that never gelled, plans for this lively 15-foot sailing machine languished for nearly a decade before being revived and updated for the 2013 launch of a pair of prototypes.
15' 5" x 144", 260 lbs, 450 lb max capacity
The Outrigger Junior is best described as a “Tahitian Outrigger,” which is to say a finely proportioned sailing canoe that’s asymmetrical, but that tacks conventionally. The famous Malibu Outrigger of the 1950’s and 1960’s is a major influence, but the Outrigger Junior is a more sophisticated and modern design. Docile to handle yet lightning quick, the Outrigger Junior is outrageous good fun on the water. The outrigger layout enjoys many engineering advantages. It’s lighter and less work to build compared to a catamaran of the same size and payload, yet the outrigger has more righting moment. This means more speed for less money. Lots and lots and lots of speed. Even with the outrigger layout’s economy, there’s quite a bit of boat to build. We’ve made it as easy as we can with a well-tested, tight-fitting kit, or full-sized plans and patterns. We offer several separate packages–hulls, rig, etc.–that plans or kit builders can purchase in any combination to suit their budget. Count on about 250 hours to put one of these together, followed by endless curiosity, admiration, and jealousy at the beach.
Base Kit Includes Computer-cut and drilled BS1088 okoume parts, bulkheads & webs, mast step, centerboard trunk, aka & bench parts, fiberglass, hardware. Includes a detailed builder's guide and plans. You’ll need the Sailing Kit, Running Rigging Package and Line (not included in the kit).
Estimated Build Time - 250 hours Sailing Specs: Sail Area: 165 sq.ft. | Draft (board up): 5" | Draft (board down): 30" Sailing Component Kit Includes Mast, boom, yard, centerboard, rudder, tiller, and lateen sail. visit clcboats.com/oj

18' 7" x 72", 600 lbs, 900 lb max capacity
The Guider John Guider has covered more than 10,000 miles in open boats, 8000 of them in the original Skerry Raid. In 2019 he returned for a new boat, this time to run in the Race to Alaska. In his honor we named the new design "The Guider." Compared to the original Skerry Raid (a modified, decked-in Skerry) that John Guider sailed and rowed around the Great Loop (and beyond), the new boat is bigger (18'7" versus 15') and heavier. The design brief included more storage, room to sleep aboard in comfort, and the ability to push the boat harder in rough and windy conditions. While the Guider is fast and handy under sail and oar, there's an emphasis on safety and camp-cruising comfort. There's plenty of room for two adults to sleep in the 6'6" long cockpit. This is a battle-tested design with a striking turn of speed under sail and oar, perfect for the expedition-racing scene.
Base Kit Includes Computer-cut and drilled okoume marine plywood parts, hardwood outwales, carlins, trunk spacers, a watertight foredeck hatch and deck plates, epoxy kit, stainless steel fasteners and copper wire, and fiberglass for the hull and deck. Base kits include the centerboard trunk, rudder trunk, and mast step. Includes a detailed builder's guide.
Estimated Build Time - 300 hours Sailing Specs: Sail Area: 125 sq.ft. | Draft (board up): 9" | Draft (board down): 36" Sailing Component Kit Contents CNC-cut 6061-T6 aluminum centerboard blade and complete balanced rudder assembly, which comprises CNC-cut parts for a rudder cassette, stainless steel shaft, CNC-cut airfoil rudder blade sections, a mahogany tiller, and stainless steel fasteners and tangs. This option includes staves for the hollow mast, timber blanks for the yard and boom, shaping templates for the spars, and a white sail professionally-cut from Dacron. Two rows of reef points are standard. Other sail colors are available. visit clcboats.com/guider

Waterlust Sailing Canoe
17' x 36", 115 lbs, 400 lb max capacity
This sailing canoe was drawn by Dillon Majoros for Waterlust, a watersports marketing outfit. The design takes its cues from classic sailing canoes of the late 19th century. Dillon has added a higher volume hull with fuller ends for increased carrying capacity, stability, and performance under sail. The hull design includes watertight compartments fore and aft, watertight storage forward of the cockpit, and stowage bins port and starboard in the cockpit that double as support rails for the seat. The cockpit extends under the aft deck, and may be used as a sleeping berth for the crew. The boat is powered by a yawl rig, which is traditional to the type and easy to manage, too. Among the more unique features of the design is an integrated Hobie Mirage Drive™ for auxiliary power. This drops into a trunk in the cockpit. Waterlust Sailing Canoes build quickly and inexpensively. Most are sailed in the traditional "canoe yawl" fashion, but the optional outriggers will appeal to sailors with less skill or rough itineraries.
Base Kit Includes Computer-cut and drilled BS1088 okoume parts, milled timber for the stringers and trim, copper wire, rails, hatch parts, rudder parts, centerboard trunk, drive trunk parts, epoxy, fiberglass, and hardware. Includes a detailed builder's guide.
Estimated Build Time - 160 hours Sailing Specs: Sail Area (lug yawl): 62 sq.ft. | Sail Area (mizzen): 19 sq.ft. | Draft (board up): 4" | Draft (board down): 32" Sailing Component Kit Contents Premium Dacron sails, masts, daggerboard, rudder, and six spars. Hardware sold separately. Outrigger Package Base Kit Includes Computer-cut and drilled BS1088 okoume parts, spar timber, and daggerboard. Includes a (separate) detailed builder's guide.

30' 8" x 240", 1400 lbs, 950 lb payload
Madness 31ft Pacific Proa Madness is John Harris's lightweight “Pacific” or windward proa, intended for fast cruising with two adults or daysailing with four. With a payload of just under 1000lbs, the pocket-cruiser accommodations are ideal for an adventurous couple intent on coastal cruising or island-hopping at multihull speeds. Madness has clocked sustained speeds of 20 knots. Madness was inspired by the work of proa guru Russell Brown, who also consulted on the design. The design brief was for an elegant, inexpensive, and relatively easy-to-build multihull for fast cruising. Much care was taken to simplify construction, making this stitch-and-glue design more accessible to the home builder than anything capable of the same speeds. As of this writing, five beautifully-rendered examples are sailing.
Hull Kit Includes Computer-cut and drilled BS1088 okoume plywood parts, and a detailed plans package.

Skerry Raid 14' 11" x 60", 140 lbs, 500 lb max capacity
Six inches wider than the stock Skerry, this variation has a deck, with watertight stowage fore and aft. A pivoting centerboard replaces the standard model’s daggerboard. In skilled hands this is an expedition boat fit for a wide range of conditions, from open water crossings to placid creek-crawling. John Guider sailed the prototype something like 8000 miles.
Hull Kit Includes Computer-cut and drilled BS1088 okoume parts, shear clamps and rails, centerboard and rudder assemblies, and epoxy and fiberglass. Sail(s), spars, and sailing hardware not included.

Mbuli Pacific Proa
20' x 144", 450 lbs, 450 lb payload
John Harris designed and built this Pacific proa at CLC in 2000. Mbuli (pronounced em-BOO-lee) is a lightweight beachcruiser, easy to build, capable of carrying one or two people around protected waters at 10 knots. Quite a few have been built around the world. Fortunately, only Hull #1 sported the massive wing masts, which proved unruly and nearly impossible to tame. In 2019 we revisited the design. While no changes were made to the proa, we spent a lot of time increasing the level of detail in the plans, making this simple boat more accessible to the average builder.
Hull Kit Includes Computer-cut and drilled BS1088 okoume plywood hull parts and detailed plans.

Nesting Expedition Dinghy
10' 6" x 42", 150 lbs, 400 lb max capacity
This cruising dinghy is intended for people who like exploring in small boats but don’t have a big shop or storage space. Designer John Harris calculated the smallest possible footprint for a boat that would sail and row well, allow a single person to sleep aboard, and carry a week’s worth of supplies. This water-ballasted 10'6" hull sails well on all points, and athletic skippers can manage rough coastal conditions. The bow and stern can be unbolted to store in the center section for storage, or shipment to exotic locales.
Hull Kit Includes Computer-cut and drilled BS1088 okoume plywood parts, and a detailed plans package.

18' 5" x 60", 1500 lbs, 2200 lb payload
Autumn Leaves Autumn Leaves is John Harris’s riff on the century-old "canoe yawl" theme. The classical canoe yawl, more of a small boat cruising philosophy than a specific boat type, emphasized self-sufficiency and sailing qualities. A good canoe yawl should be capable of coastal cruising, and handy enough under sail that an engine is not missed. Autumn Leaves is straightforward and cost-effective for amateur construction. Several are sailing now and have proven to be stiff and handy under sail. Weighing about 1500lbs on the trailer, she tows easily behind medium-sized cars.

Faering Cruiser 17' x 56", 100 lbs, 800 lb max capacity
This started as a design commission for a sleek singlehander that could be sailed, or rowed with a sliding seat. We adapted the slippery shape of a Norwegian faering as the best fit for that combination. To accommodate a sleeping cabin, the cockpit is in the center above a water ballast tank. The Faering Cruiser was commissioned as a singlehander, though two adults may daysail in comfort. Intended for coastal work, this is a great step up in comfort for someone who has been camping out of a kayak or dinghy.
Hull Kit Includes Computer-cut and drilled BS1088 okoume plywood parts, timber for rails, stringers, rudder and centerboard, epoxy and fiberglass. Includes a detailed plans set.

Whitby Pilot Gig
32' x 58", 725 lbs, 1600 lb max capacity
The Whitby Fisherman’s Amateur Rowing Club commissioned this stitch-and-glue rendition of a traditional six-oared Cornish pilot gig. The design of these fast rowing boats dates well back into the 19th century. No one has ever tried a stitch-and-glue Cornish pilot gig, and at 32 feet long it’s certainly among the largest quick-assembly stitch-and-glue projects out there. The beautiful lines of the original gigs are preserved; from a boat-length away, the composite construction is invisible. With LapStitch™ construction, very little in the way of a mold is needed, just a few cradles during the hull assembly operation. Ten structural bulkheads add great stiffness to the hull and support a variety of fixed-seat rowing geometries, depending on the racing ambitions of the crew. Whitby Pilot Gigs built on both sides of the Atlantic are proven race-winners.

Team Dory
23' 9" x 56", 210 lbs, 1000 lb max capacity
In 2012 we built the first 23'9" CLC Team Dory with a group of volunteers from the Independence Seaport Museum in Philadelphia. Many more have been built, and the feedback has been uniformly positive. Shown here fitted as a "coxed pair," seating also accommodates four rowers and a coxswain. Max crew weight is about 900lbs. The CLC Team Dory is easy to build. A team of volunteers can build the hull in about 50 hours, plus a couple weeks of part-time sanding and finishing. Total build time of 120-150 hours, easy construction, and a kit cost of roughly $3,500 make this an accessible and versatile fleet trainer.
Complete Kit Includes Computer-cut and drilled plywood parts, timber, epoxy, fiberglass, and hardware, and a step-by-step illustrated building manual. Also included are full-sized templates for 10'6" sweeps and oar building instructions.

Rhode Runner CLC Runabout 1950s-era runabouts have looks–and performance–that never age. We wanted one for ourselves, so we designed this small runabout with a nod to the classics. It was also an opportunity to apply what we’ve learned about prefabricated stitch-and-glue boatbuilding to the complex (and beautiful) hull shapes of the past. This perky 14'9" runabout was the result. 14' 9" x 5' 5", -350 lbs, 25hp outboard, 12 US gal fuel capacity, seats 4 adults, 1000 lb max capacity
A 25hp outboard (max) yields a top speed around 24mph. The boat doesn’t skid in turns, is well behaved in general, and is not much slowed by a crew of three adults. The name “Rhode Runner” references the nearby Rhode River, site of decades of CLC prototype launches, photo shoots, and small boat shenanigans. For now, the Rhode Runner will be sold as a CLC ProKit, suitable for confident builders with a couple of stitch-and-glue boats under their belts.
Base Kit Includes Computer-cut BS1088 okoume marine plywood, all holes pre-drilled and frames located by mortises, complete epoxy and fiberglass kit, and basic hull assembly hardware. Includes a detailed builder's guide.

CLC Toolbox Kit Finished Tool Box dimensions: 25" x 10" (approx. 9" tall)
The CLC Tool Box is the boatbuilder's interpretation of the classic "tab-and-slot" type, favored by woodworkers for its ease of assembly and flexibility. As the name suggests, the tool box goes together with mortise-and-tenon joints, with two locking "keys" to hold the whole assembly together. And since it's made of premium marine-grade plywood, just like our boat and camper kits, the CLC Tool Box is rigid and durable. How you finish your tool box is up to you. Either tab the parts together and call it a day, or coat the assembly with epoxy and varnish it for extra durability. Stain it or paint it if you'd like! Aside from serving as an excellent organizer for your boatbuilding tools, the CLC Tool Box is a great introduction to plywood kit construction.

Okoume
Okoume Marine Plywood – 3mm, 4mm, 6mm, 9mm, 12mm & 18mm Okoume, aucoumea klaineana, is a fast-growing tropical hardwood. Okoume’s clear, beautifully- figured grain has a golden, honey-colored hue beneath epoxy and varnish, while its low density yields ultra-lightweight hulls. Chesapeake Light Craft’s okoume is manufactured in Europe’s finest FSC-certified mills to BS1088 and Lloyd’s of London rules. High-quality okoume is essential for homebuilt kayaks and smallcraft, but it’s very difficult to get locally in most places. CLC has developed a specialty in shipping plywood all over the United States. Careful packaging and our long relationships with national carriers allow us to ship small plywood orders right to your door. Due to variations in currency exchange and shipping rates, plywood prices may change without notice. Special shipping rates apply.

Selected by Boatbuilders for Boatbuilders You can order the same superior lumber we use in our kits and display models, from the same stacks we pick over for our own projects. Order lumber in any quantity–no order too small–and in a wide choice of species. Your order will be hand-picked by our boatbuilders. We have worked very hard to keep the prices low, and we have sorted out how to ship small or large quantities. For larger orders, or lengths over eight feet, we have arranged to have the lumber shipped directly from the sawmill. Most shipments under eight feet will ship very affordably via FedEx. Please allow a couple of weeks for your order, as lumber doesn’t grow–and isn’t stocked–in convenient multiples of 8 feet. We may have to mill the timber to your specs, and/or wait for those sizes to come in. Cypress

We especially like their 207 Hardener for blush-free coating and clear fiberglass work, and their Six10 adhesive for filleting and bonding work. How We Ship Boat Kits Boat kits and oars and plywood and things are bulky! The packaging varies from one boat to the next, but most comprise one or two large cartons the shape and size of an eight-foot-tall door, accompanied by one or two smaller boxes with your epoxy kit and peripherals. The largest carton is rarely more than 60 pounds. We use a freight company for kit shipping. In most cases, a UPS-sized step-truck will pull up to your house to unload the boxes. We will email a tracking number so you can follow the progress of your kit in transit. On the website you’ll find tools that allow you to type in your zip code and calculate kit shipping prices, and more information about how we ship. Unlike Amazon, which mainly ships small things, we have to grapple with big, awkward things! Less bulky accessories ship via FedEx. Accessories will be shipped separately from your kit packages, so a boat kit and accessories may
