CHRONIC JOINT PAIN?
HOPING TO AVOID CORTICOSTEROID INJECTIONS OR SURGERY?
Dr. Jose E. Barreto may have an answer. And it uses the body’s own resources to heal.
It’s the kind of treatment that gives hope where, all too often, traditional medicine does not.
What does he provide that his colleagues do not?
It’s called Regenomics, a new medical office in Lake Nona that offers a holistic treatment approach that “…helps people address their pain, joint injuries and arthritis by optimizing their own body’s ability to heal. This is done without drugs or surgeries and it allows them to get back on the track and field of life;” an integrative, whole person approach.
“Someone who is a smoker and obese may come into a practice with knee or back pain. Most physicians will do an exam, order an MRI and apply injections to help with the pain. At Regenomics, I will look at all factors. Without the proper environment, the body won’t be ready to heal. If I see a poor lifestyle: eating out of control, smoking and/or overall weakness, I’ll address those issues first before we start treatment. That way we’ll get the best possible outcome.”
Orthobiologics, one of the main services at Regenomics include different treatments such as Prolotherapy, PRGF and Lipogems. Prolotherapy (short for Proliferant Therapy), involves the injection of a solution of dextrose, lidocaine and saline into an affected joint, tendon or ligament to restart the healing process. In the case of PRGF blood is drawn from the patient’s veins and its platelets are separated from the red and white blood cells via centrifuge. This cre-
ates PRP or Platelet Rich Plasma. Dr. Barreto’s treatment takes this process one step further, however. By activating the platelets, they will release the growth factors, which are key players in the healing process. He then injects this Plasma Rich in Growth Factors (PRGF) into the affected area, eliciting both a more powerful, immediate response and a longer-lasting effect.
For more severe conditions, Dr. Barreto utilizes Lipogems treatment, an FDAcleared medical device which takes fat (adipose tissue) from the abdomen or buttock area (under local anesthetic), “cleans” it and then injects it (along with its attendant stem cells) into the arthritic painful joint or injured tendon/ ligament, in order to promote healing which might not otherwise be possible. He says this procedure is ideal for more severe sports injuries and those awaiting knee or hip replacement surgery, yet hoping to either delay, or render it unnecessary.
With Epigenetic Coaching, another service offered at Regenomics, Dr. Barreto’s team starts with a DNA screening process similar to that used by 23&Me or Ancestry DNA, but which also gathers genetic markers and other data that help them develop a plan of action to optimize every system and rhythm of the body. For example, one aspect of the Epigenetic Coaching assessment involves the client to wear a device for 3 days. The device will record the client’s physical responses to factors such as exercise, sleep, food consumption and stress, and provides a plan based on these measurements combined with the client’s genetic markers.
“By the end of the assessment, we have a complete physiological profile,” Barreto says. “It tells us how the body is working and whether the client is sleeping, exercising or eating correctly, and at the right times (based on their genetic makeup). This allows us to provide specific recommendations for optimal health and well-being. The client can turn on or off the right genes by changing how they eat or when they go to sleep. Their DNA is not their destiny, it is their potential.”
With a medical specialty in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation and a sub specialty in Interventional Pain Management and Regenerative Medicine, Dr. Barreto says that his love relationship with therapeutic healing began when, at 15, he sustained a back injury playing baseball: his passion.
“My life was baseball. But after the injury, I found something else I loved: rehabilitation and medicine. I loved the thought of using my hands to treat and help people. I felt hope. I felt re-energized. I felt excited about the new possibilities.”
He says he came to Lake Nona five years ago and found it to be the ideal community for a practice such as Regenomics.
“You feel the love and energy. The walking paths, trails, gym, pool—the community provides an environment that leads people to be more active and interactive. It’s a fun, enjoyable and stimulating place to be!”
The Regenomics Orthobiologics treatment plan includes the initial visit, a complete physical examination, diagnostic ultrasound, advanced Neuromuscular mapping with NeuFit (an electrical stimulation device that can be used for rehabilitation, fitness and/ or performance) and treatment recommendations. The initial visit is only one hour and costs $250, (as an introductory offer). His Epigenetic Coaching programs are available in three tiers and can include as many counseling sessions or labs as the client chooses. A Health-span and Longevity Medicine Program will be available soon. Payment plans are available, as these treatments and programs are not covered by any of the insurance companies.
