Welcome to Summer! to Summer!

THE GENSTAR SUCCESS STORY POWERING UP:

When GenStar Generator Services’ owner Lance Metcalfe sparked a conversation with his St. Johns River neighbor Edgardo Rodriguez, it led to renewed energy for his company. Metcalfe appreciated Rodiguez’s fresh insights and hired him as general manager.

Metcalfe, who has a degree in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Central Florida, became a generator expert when he worked for Main Line Electrical Contractors. As a result of the 2008 economic downturn, Metcalfe purchased the generator division from his mentor at the company, Chris Mahnken. Equipped with his expertise, grit, and a savvy administrative assistant, Pamela Lloyd, also from Main Line, Metcalfe launched GenStar. The business that started with just the two of them now employs 18.

Igniting Change

Three factors have contributed to the company's growth and success. One is Rodriguez’s vision. When the general manager was hired three years ago, GenStar had six employees and was what Metcalfe describes as a “mom and pop” business. “I can’t give Edgardo enough accolades. He had a vision for growth and did exactly what he said he would do,” said Metcalfe.

Rodriguez holds a bachelor's degree in Physics and has a diverse background as a Navy aviation electrician, research and development engineer, and sales and marketing director. Some of his GenStar vision, which is now a reality, includes implementing systems to improve service, establishing departments, and hiring a program manager to run installations. Another priority was fitting people into the right positions to match their skills. “I’m amazed when things come together. I really enjoy what I do,” says Rodriguez.

Empowering People

While formal structure comes at a cost for some companies, this wasn’t the case for GenStar. This is due to the second factor in their success: Metcalfe’s and Rodriguez’s commitment to those they serve. “Customer service is our biggest differentiator,” says Rodriguez. People don’t want to need a generator, but when the need arises, they are grateful because reliable power becomes a lifeline rather than a convenience. When a storm or hurricane

hits, GenStar’s technicians are on the road. After the last big storm, they had over 200 calls. “Our goal,” says Metcalfe, “is to make people safe and secure. I don’t want our customers to be in the dark.”

Customer service includes Metcalfe’s pledge that a live person always answers the phone. You never experience the frustration of listening to a long list of departments and which number to press. He says, “We want the customers to know that we always care.” Rodriguez adds, “Dealing with the customers is exciting, and we want to make sure they get the outstanding service they deserve.”

Rather than being a “my way or the highway” type of owner, he inspires loyalty, which is one reason for the extremely low employee turnover. “I don’t have unrealistic expectations,” says Metcalfe. However, he and Rodriguez have high standards, which is why the company can provide quality products and outstanding service to its vast customer base.

GenStar specializes in residential and light commercial generators. Their service extends to a fifty-mile radius around Sanford. Recently, they acquired the contract for ACE Hardware stores in Central Florida. The company also

supports the community through donations to Second Harvest Food Bank, sponsorship of Sanford Porchfest, and participation in the Winter Springs and Oviedo Christmas parades.

Their commitment also extends to the GenStar employees. “We have a great working environment,” says Rodriguez, “and we’re very proud of our team.” Because generators are electrical appliances, the company has a generous journeyman's electrician license program. The company pays for tuition and books during the four years it takes to become an electrician. Work schedules are also adjusted to accommodate school commitments.

Leading the Charge

The third factor for GenStar’s continued success is Metcalfe’s humble leadership style.

Generating Relationships

You never know. Sometimes, the best resources are closer than we realize. In a day and age when people rarely know their neighbors, Lance Metcalfe and Edgardo Rodriguez are a testament to what can be generated when you step off your porch.  n

ASSISTED LIVINGwith Love

Cultivating Compassionate Care for Seniors

It’s no secret that there is a growing demand for assisted living facilities in the U.S. to serve those who require help with daily tasks and healthcare services. According to the National Center for Assisted Living, in Florida alone, almost 3,000 assisted living communities serve 114,000 of our elderly. Sixty-five percent require help with bathing and forty-seven percent have been diagnosed with dementia or Alzheimers.

The statistics are dismal as we try to care for our aging population. Yet, at the heart of “assisted living with love” is treating each resident, not just as a patient, but as a valued individual worthy of attention, respect, and affection. It requires understanding that incorporating love and compassion into daily interactions protects their dignity and enhances their quality of care.

Meaningful Connections

The “assisted living with love” approach prioritizes individualized care plans by catering to each resident’s unique needs and preferences. Whether assisting with daily activities, medication management, or companionship, every aspect is infused with empathy and understanding.

Research indicates that seniors in environments characterized by love and compassion experience better emotional well-being. A study published in the Journal of Clinical Nursing found that a nurturing environment can significantly reduce loneliness and depression among elderly residents.

It has also been found that a sense of

belonging and emotional support is linked to slower cognitive decline. The American Journal of Geriatric Psychiatry reported that social connections and emotional support are protective against dementia and cognitive impairment.

Seniors thrive when they feel connected to others and engage in meaningful activities. Opportunities for camaraderie, from group outings and recreational activities tailored to their interests, are essential. The goal is to create a supportive environment where residents can form friendships.

Healthy Interactions

Promoting holistic well-being is central to “assisted living with love.” Love and

kindness benefit mental and emotional health and have tangible effects on physical health. Studies have shown that supportive, compassionate care environments can lead to lower blood pressure, reduced risk of cardiovascular disease, and overall improved physical health.

Yoga, meditation, art therapy, and music sessions create a sense of purpose. Simple gestures like holding a hand, offering a listening ear, or sharing a heartfelt conversation also make a positive difference for someone navigating the challenges of aging.

Loving Environments

Many seniors find the transition to assisted living challenging, affecting their sense of identity and independence. However, research indicates that assisted living communities emphasizing compassionate care and involvement in meaningful activities can facilitate easier adaptation and promote a sense of autonomy and purpose.

By embracing the “assisted living with love” approach, we can ensure that seniors receive the care and support they deserve and enrich their lives with dignity, respect, and, above all, love. n

EXPLORING COMMUNITY SUPPORT IN SANFORD

Sanford is a city rich in history and community spirit, boasting a robust infrastructure dedicated to fostering community relations, and supporting residents through various programs. At the heart of these efforts is the Community Relations and Neighborhood Engagement Department (CRANE), a cornerstone in the city's strategy to enhance the quality of life for all its residents.

Community Relations and Neighborhood Engagement Department (CRANE)

The City of Sanford's comprehensive approach to community relations and neighborhood engagement underscores its dedication to enhancing the lives of its residents. Under the leadership of Nicole Osburn, the Community Relations and Neighborhood Engagement (CRANE) Director, the city ensures that all people are treated fairly and have equal access to opportunities in employment, housing and certain public accommodations. The Race Equality, Equity, and Inclusion (REEI) initiative, the My Brother's Keeper (MBK) program and vital support services like the Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) and the Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP) lay the foundation for a more resilient and thriving city that promotes fair treatment and full participation of all people, especially populations that have historically been underrepresented or subject to discrimination because of their background, identity, disability, etc.

My Brother's Keeper (MBK)

One of the flagship programs under CRANE is My Brother's Keeper (MBK). Launched in response to a national call to action by former President

Barack Obama, MBK aims to address persistent opportunity gaps faced by boys and young men of color. In Sanford, MBK provides mentorship, educational support, and career training, helping to pave the way for a brighter future for these young individuals. Through partnerships with local schools, businesses, and non-profit organizations, MBK creates a network of support that empowers participants to achieve their full potential.

Race, Equality, Equity, and Inclusion (REEI)

Sanford’s commitment to fostering an inclusive community is exemplified by its Race, Equality, Equity, and Inclusion (REEI) initiative. The REEI initiative works to ensure that all residents, regardless of their race or

background, have equal access to opportunities and resources. This initiative includes diversity training for city staff, public forums on race relations, and policy reviews to promote equity. By addressing systemic inequalities and promoting a culture of inclusivity, REEI strives to create a more just and equitable Sanford.

Community Development Block Grant (CDBG)

Another vital component of Sanford’s community support framework is the Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) program. Funded by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD), CDBG provides critical funding for projects that benefit lowand moderate-income residents. In Sanford,

CDBG funds are used for a variety of purposes: infrastructure improvements, economic development projects, public facilities improvements, housing rehabilitation, and social services. These projects not only enhance the living conditions for disadvantaged residents but also contribute to the overall vitality and sustainability of the community.

Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP)

The Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP) is another essential service offered in Sanford. Funded by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), LIHEAP helps low-income households manage the cost of home energy bills, ensuring that residents can maintain a safe and healthy living environment. The program provides finan-

cial assistance for heating and cooling costs, energy crisis intervention, and weatherization improvements. By alleviating the burden of high-energy costs, LIHEAP plays a crucial role in preventing energy poverty and supporting the well-being of Sanford's most vulnerable residents.

Nicole believes that thriving neighborhoods start with strong community connections. Her commitment to partnering with local social service agencies and residents creates vibrant, inclusive spaces for everyone. Join us in providing a brighter future one community at a time.  n

Summer can be a busy season in historic Downtown Sanford (DTS) with various events and festivities. DTS’s prime summer event is Star-Spangled Sanford, the City of Sanford’s sponsored fireworks event attended by tens of thousands on July 4th. But Sanford has other great events going on as well during the summer. Before you head to DTS on a weekend, we suggest that you check the City of Sanford’s Event Calendar at https://www.SanfordFL.gov to avoid any surprises—events can bring lots of people to DTS and cause traffic and parking delays. When such an event is going on, reservations, where offered, are often imperative unless you want to go hungry.

Residents of DTS know that reservations are recommended and often required on weekends for dining establishments that take reservations. It is always wise to call ahead. And if your plans change, do the right thing, and cancel your reservation so that someone else will not be turned away and can have your spot. It is the right thing to do and helps the business.

Florida’s summer weather is fairly consistent, unless a hurricane threatens. Hot days often brief pop-up afternoon thunderstorms. Here are several suggestions to help you enjoy your dining and drinking experience in DTS in the summer months:

• Mornings tend to be mild, pleasant, and dry, but by noon it will be heating up. Choose where you eat and sit based on these conditions.

Do not forget to bring your umbrella. Afternoon storms, driven by the collision of sea breezes, can mean that clear skies suddenly darken, clouds move in, and brief thunderstorms suddenly appear, occasionally with heavy rain. An umbrella is cheap insurance.

Historic Downtown Sanford SUMMER DINING TIPS

While it can be hot in the middle part of the day, and you may want to consider eating indoors in the comfort of the A/C, consider this:

o Some establishments have covered outdoor areas with fans or misting machines that can make eating and drinking outside very comfortable, even in the heat of the day.

o In old buildings, the A/C systems can work hard and unevenly, resulting in some areas being colder than others. Bring a sweater if you plan to eat inside.

o If you are dining or drinking comfortably outside, keep in mind that your servers are working hard in the heat to keep you happy. Treat and tip them accordingly.

Sanford is home to many great mom-and-pop eating and drinking establishments, and they work hard to take care of their patrons even in the summer heat. Following these simple suggestions can make your experience in DTS much more pleasant. Enjoy Sanford, and do not forget to tell your friends! n

He’s big into eating at local mom ‘n’ pop shops where high-quality ingredients, love, and a dose of home cooking make all the difference. While he occasionally eats at the big chains, he claims it’s only to remind him where a real quality dining experience lurks — in the small restaurants which are the heart and soul of every neighborhood and community.

“DOWNSIZING AND ORGANIZING YOUR HOME CAN BE A JOURNEY OF SELF-DISCOVERY, CLARITY, AND A TOUCH OF MADNESS. “

Ah, the joys of downsizing and organizing your home - a task that can be both overwhelming and oddly satisfying. As an interior designer with a penchant for solutions and creativity, I've seen firsthand the trend of people embracing a simpler and more organized lifestyle, whether it's to gain a fresh perspective in their current space or to prepare for a move to a new home. And let's not forget the allure of Florida, where many are flocking for a change of scenery and a taste of that sunshine state magic.

Now, let's tackle this daunting task with a sprinkle of humor and a dash of creativity, shall we? One fun approach is to assign a different color to each day of the week. Monday blues? Perfect! Focus on decluttering items with a blue label. Feeling fiery on a Tuesday? Target those red-labeled items with gusto. This color-coded system not only adds a bit of whimsy to the process but also helps you stay organized and on track.

And who says decluttering can't be a game? Enter the "reverse yard sale" - the ultimate decluttering challenge. Instead of selling items, challenge yourself to give away one item each day. It's like a treasure hunt in reverse, where the real prize is a clutter-free home and a lighter heart. Plus, you get to spread some joy by passing on items to those who might need them more than you do.

Now, when it comes to deciding what should stay and what should go, remember this golden rule: if it doesn't spark joy or serve a purpose, it's time to bid it adieu. Say goodbye to those mismatched socks, that dusty collection of knick-knacks, and that questionable kitchen gadget you've never used. Keep what matters, let go of the rest, and watch your space transform into a sanctuary of simplicity and order.

But wait, there's more! Organizing your current home doesn't have to be a chore. Start by decluttering one room at a time, creating designated spaces for different activities and items. Embrace the power of storage solutions - baskets, bins, shelves - to keep things tidy and within reach. Remember, a well-organized home is like a well-oiled machine - it runs smoothly and efficiently, making your daily life a breeze.

And what about that empty room that's been begging for a makeover? Fear not, for A.Clore Interiors is to here to transform that blank canvas into a masterpiece tailored just for you! Whether you dream of a cozy reading nook, a home office that sparks creativity, or a relaxation retreat fit for royalty, we've got you covered. Our team specializes in turning empty spaces into functional and unique areas tailored to your needs and style. Let's turn that dream into a reality that's one of a kind, just like you.

FROM GLOBAL STAGES TO LOCAL STREETS: Benny Crosby’s Transition from U.S. Secret Service to Sanford

Benny Crosby, a “simple guy from Mississippi,” feels at home in Sanford. But before settling into this peaceful chapter of his life, he had a distinguished career as a Secret Service agent.

Call of Duty

“As long as I can remember, I always wanted to be a cop,” Benny said. After completing a stint in the Navy, he attended college in Mississippi, his home state. After graduating, the Sheriff in Attala County, Mississippi offered him the chief deputy position. However, he soon found that the mix of politics and law enforcement was not for him.

During his time with the sheriff’s office, he befriended two federal agents who encouraged him to take the Treasury Law Enforcement exam to become an agent. He passed and applied to the U.S. Secret Service. Several weeks later, he was sworn in as a special agent of the U.S. Secret Service and stationed in Nashville, Tennessee.

Life of Service

Marked by unique experiences and frequent promotions during his twenty-seven years, Benny attributes his success to the values his parents taught him: “I rose through the ranks simply because I wasn’t afraid of long hours, and hard work.”

One of the many highlights of Benny’s career was being on the team (selected from the Presidential Protective Division) to protect Dr. Henry Kissinger, the National Security Advisor at the time. Kissinger secretly traveled to Peking to meet with Chinese leaders Mao Zedong and Zhou Enlai. The trip set the stage for President Nixon’s visit to reestablish U.S. ties with China. On the return trip, they flew to the presidential compound in San Clemente, California, where Kissinger briefed the president. They then traveled to Los Angeles, where Nixon announced his plan to normalize relations with China.

ing the Ten-Minute Medicine Program, which trained agents to provide medical assistance for the people they were responsible for protecting if the situation arose. One of his trainees was Special Agent-inCharge Jerry Parr (Presidential Protective Division), who applied what he learned to save President Reagan’s life after he was shot by John Hinckley, Jr.

Another contribution Benny made to the Service was contributing to the curriculum for and teaching at the first Sky Marshal Academy, a program developed to protect the public on commercial flights.

nine grandchildren spread throughout the country and the Dominican Republic, so living near an international airport was a must. In addition to a safe, convenient location, Sanford has offered the couple “an increasing number of friends, great neighbors, and fresh challenges.”

One fresh challenge came when the Sanford City Commission appointed Benny to the Sanford Airport Authority Board (still actively serving). The appointment was a natural culmination of his commitment to service and passion for aviation. Benny is a certified flight instructor and has a commercial pilot’s license.

Later in his career, as Special Agent-in-Charge of the Houston field office, Benny oversaw investigations in sixty-seven Texas counties and the security for the 1992 Republican National Convention. When President George W. Bush left office a year later, the former president's protection detail was placed under Benny’s supervision.  During this time, Benny was promoted to the Secret Service’s Senior Executive Service.  He was also elected President of the Houston Federal Executive Board.

Earlier in his career, Benny was assigned to the Secret Service Office of Training, and during that time he was also instrumental in co-author-

Blessings of Connection

When Benny retired from the Secret Service, he transitioned from public service to corporate life. As the Director of Corporate Security for Halliburton (worldwide), he spent much of his time traveling the world to countries such as Algeria, Saudi Arabia, Colombia, the Pacific Rim, and Europe. After years of constant travel, he decided to retire again.

Benny Crosby’s desire to live his retirement years away from “a big city, crime, and traffic” eventually brought him to Sanford. He and his wife of seventeen years, Perla Bello Crosby, have a combined family of five children and

“I have been blessed throughout my career and life,” he admits. One unexpected blessing came when friends introduced him to Perla. Although reluctant to be set up, “It was love at first sight” and both agree, it was also meant to be. The two discovered that their meeting could have come years earlier when they were in Rome on business and staying in the same hotel, but they did not meet then.

Benny Crosby’s inspiring life of service exposed him to intriguing experiences and dangerous missions around the world. Now, however, he’s grateful to live in this community with the love of his life.  n

OFTEN CALLED, ALWAYS CHOSEN:

How Chris Anderson’s Life Journey Prepared Him for Leadership

Chris Anderson's life journey has been influenced by his time in the military, his upbringing, and the values instilled by his family. Serving in the toughest basic training unit in the nation right before being deployed to fight on the frontlines of Operation Enduring Freedom taught him about dedication and resilience. Witnessing firsthand the impact of his service in Afghanistan and standing up against leadership further molded his principles. Despite setbacks and suffering consequences for speaking out, Chris remained steadfast in doing what he believed was right—and eventually earned recognition for his national acclaiming leadership skills, including one he is most proud of, the Army achievement medal.

Growing up, Chris experienced divorce, frequent relocations, and financial difficulties. However, his godparents provided stability. They introduced him to politics, sparking his interest in the field. Despite facing adversity and witnessing his father's struggles, Chris learned the importance of work. His great-grandfather's role as a civil rights advocate and the wisdom passed down from his grandparents instilled in him a respect for his heritage and a strong sense of Christian faith.

In 2019, when Chris’s grandmother attended his swearing-in ceremony for Supervisor of Elections of Seminole County with the governor, it reminded him of the significance of honoring one's roots. “Being a black American in charge of the most important thing in your wallet, your voting card, your voice is so significant, it’s profound,” Chris said. “My grandmother told me, ‘I never thought I would see the day where my very own grandson was in charge of the process that was denied from so many of us.’”

His wife, Ebony, holds a place in his heart, being both his best friend and soulmate. He values every moment spent with her and their three children.

Throughout his 13-year career in law enforcement, Chris has taken on many roles, including that of homicide detective. Regardless of his position, he has consistently been recognized as a leader. Chris often reflects on his life journey as “Often called, always chosen.”

As the first African American constitutional officer in Seminole County, Chris aims to continue serving as a role model for the area while consid-

ering other political endeavors in the future. “The adversities I have experienced as a child and a young man are the tools that built my character,” Chris said. “Without those things, I wouldn’t be able to weather the storm that comes with the job.” n

JAKSON ' S BASEBALL STORY:

A 13 -Year-Old Champion

Building Community Connections

Idiscovered my love for baseball at the age of three, spending countless hours at Chase Park in Sanford. With the help of my awesome parents, who were my coaches, I improved my baseball skills and made lifelong friends with my teammates, who felt like my own family. Playing the game taught me important things about life. I learned how important it is to work together with my team mates and to be fair and respectful to everyone, even the other team. The years I spent playing for the City of Sanford have had a big impact on me and helped shape my character.

After winning a championship, I wanted to improve my skills even more, so I joined a local travel ball team. Since then, I have seen myself grow and get better. Now, I have the amazing opportunity to coach t-ball for my younger brothers at the same park where I started my journey. It has been

so rewarding to watch them improve and succeed with my help. Being a supportive older sibling is something I really value, not just for my brothers but also for other kids who may not have someone to cheer them on.

My mom always taught me the value of giving back to the community, and that’s why coaching t-ball is so important to me. It’s my way of paying it forward and helping young athletes, no matter their background. I hope that my experiences inspire others to try new things, build community connections, and find joy in everything they do. n
