From live entertainment to authentic cuisine, El Zócalo brings a taste of Mexico to Downtown Sanford. Owner and manager, Lurys Alcántara, was the restaurant's accountant for years before buying it in 2020. Since her purchase, she has made some extensive changes to the business.

"I wanted to create a fun, more pleasant atmosphere that is welcoming to families and larger groups," Lurys told us.

Last year, Lurys bought the building next door to El Zócalo on Sanford Avenue. She added another bar with more seating, renovated and expanded the kitchen, and hired additional staff.

"It's a lot of work to run a restaurant. My employees get here at 5 am to make chips and tortillas from scratch, seven days a week," she said. "But we are making it work and absolutely love being here."

Lurys told us that the best part about running a restaurant is becoming part of the community. She said she loves hearing everyone's story and getting to know the town.

"Sanford is becoming more diverse with culture, so there is room for everyone," said Lurys. "It's growing into a melting pot with businesses from all backgrounds, giving an opportunity for minorities who are looking for work."

There is so much you can find to eat and drink at El Zócalo. They pride themselves on fresh ingredients while creating signature dishes paired with cocktails.

However, there is more to El Zócalo than just authentic Mexican food. The bar and lounge are open every Friday and Saturday night until 2 am with live music and entertainment.

Looking forward to 2023, Lurys plans to cover the back patio and add some games for families to play while visiting El Zócalo.

"Small businesses are driving Sanford right now," Lurys said. "You can find places so different from each other and have a good time anywhere downtown. It's a great time to be here." n
