While Downtown Sanford is host to a number of great eating and drinking establishments seven days and nights a week, only a few offers brunch on the weekends, but they are well worth it if you enjoy fine food.

The Tennessee Truffle serves brunch every Saturday from 9-1. While their menu varies from time to time, you can almost always find their world-famous Biscuits & Sausage Gravy, or Chef Nat’s take on bacon, egg, and cheese on a biscuit, as well as a nice variety of other dishes. Of course, Thursday through Saturday they also serve dinner.

Every Sunday, The Old Jailhouse hosts brunch from 11-3, and they generally have quite a crowd. After all, where else can you eat brunch behind the bars of a real old jailhouse? I recommend you start with the Green Eggs & Ham; you won’t be disappointed. You can also choose breakfast, lunch, or in-between. The chicken salad and pork belly sliders are awesome, but then again, why not stick to a more traditional Chicken and Biscuits? Don’t forget to start it all off with a mimosa. Note that from Tuesday to Saturday evenings, plus Saturday afternoons, The Old Jailhouse has a fine dinner menu, too.

Also on Sunday, Buster’s Bistro has brunch, also from 11-3. You should try the southern favorite, Biscuits & Gravy, but you might also want Croque Monsieur, an open-faced sandwich with ham, Swiss cheese, and mornay sauce—don’t forget to add on some Frites! From Poutine to Ham & Cheese Benedict to Berry Waffles and Smoked Salmon, you’re sure to find something great to eat. By the way, you may want bottomless mimosas, too! Besides Sunday brunch, Buster’s Bistro has a great dinner menu from Wednesday through Saturday. Buster’s Bistro was selected at Best of Sanford as Best Brunch 2022.

The Colonial Room is a diner and has been a Downtown Sanford staple for many years. Good old-fashioned southern home cooking is their trademark, and they never disappoint. My favorite is the patty melt, but you can get an awesome omelet there as well as many other breakfast and lunch items. The Colonial Room is open seven days a week for breakfast and lunch. Caffe Di Riverwalk is a bit off the beaten path, in the Gateway building right on the Riverwalk—talk about a view! They serve breakfast all day, from a breakfast burrito to an egg bagel, as well as a nice assortment of lunch sandwiches. Caffe Di Riverwalk is also known for its coffees and smoothies and is a popular hangout with a solid crowd of regulars. Keep in mind that they are closed on Sundays.

So now you know where to find a decent brunch in Sanford on the weekend. Wherever you go, you will not be disappointed. n

He’s big into eating at local mom ‘n’ pop shops where high quality ingredients, love, and a dose of home cooking make all the difference. While he occasionally eats at the big chains, he claims it’s only to remind him where a real quality dining experience lurks — in the small restaurants which are the heart and soul of every neighborhood and community.
