The Mission Of Patrick Henry Family Services is to provide a continuum of services to distressed children and families that will keep families together and children safe and successful. Our ministry began in 1961 as Patrick Henry Boys Plantation in Brookneal, VA. Over the years the ministry has grown to include a variety of other services. The Brookneal campus remains the site of our main offices as well as three of our residential homes for children. In addition we have satellite homes in Bedford, Cluster Springs, Rustburg and Wylliesburg. These operate as Patrick Henry Boys & Girls Homes. Patrick Henry Family Services has three Hope for Tomorrow Counseling Centers… one in Lynchburg, one in South Boston, and another in Farmville. HFT Counseling Centers serve the public as well as Patrick Henry residents and their families. From the Lynchburg location Hope for Tomorrow oversees Step Forward, a program which provides transitional living services for emerging adults ages 18-24. Patrick Henry Family Services also provides an Outreach Program that operates Hat Creek Camps and Conferences, Unbridled Grace equine program, and Patriot Sports. These are located in Campbell County. Patrick Henry Family Services is a Christian ministry, but is not affiliated with any particular church or denomination. Patrick Henry, a 501(c)3 tax-exempt corporation, operates on voluntary contributions from individuals, churches, businesses, organizations and foundations. No government grants are accepted and no family is ever turned away due to lack of financial means. For more information, please visit www.patrickhenry.org.

Looking Toward the Future

I

am firmly convinced that what people, and even organizations, think about their future is much more important to understanding their actions and attitudes than what they think about their past. I know that is counter to what is commonly taught from psychologists and behavioral specialists. None the less I stand by my premise. Don’t get me wrong. I love history. I am fascinated with almost all things historical. After all, we are who we are and we are where we are because of the people and events of the past, whether good or bad. It is appropriate, yes biblical, to honor and celebrate the victories of the past as well as to recall and mourn the failures. History is our mentor. There is much we can learn from it. It has been famously said that those who do not know the past are doomed to repeat it. That is certainly true and one very good reason to study history. H o w eve r, i t i s n o t i n k n o w i n g , understanding, or celebrating our past that endows us with a better future than our ancestors but it is in knowing, understanding, and celebrating our future that gets us there. Let me give you an example. When I was teaching college courses I came to recognized that my students’

academic success had little to do with “where they came from” but was more determined by “where they were going.” Bright kids from good families and strong schools often failed, or barely got by, while average kids from broken families and poor schools sometimes did very well. The difference was what the individual student wanted for the future. A nineteen year old who wants to be a doctor studies hard and usually avoids behavior and activities that will put that future in jeopardy. I witnessed so many privileged students wasting their time (and their parents’ money) not because they had such a horrible past

today because of history. But, we will be here tomorrow because of a vision for the future. As you read the pages of this news magazine (a periodical with a grand history itself) you will notice that there are many new things: names, ministries, activities. This emphasis on change is not because we do not honor the past. We do. We honor it and are honored to be a part of it. We make these changes in the effort to reach the future, to be here sixty years from now stronger and more relevant than ever. To embrace the future we must adapt to current realities and future trends. We

they couldn’t overcome but they had no concept of their future or what they wanted. Many wandered without purpose through their college years and beyond - failures of prosperity. But I also witnessed many students, from challenging backgrounds and with limited resources, excel because they knew exactly where they were going. They refused to be victims of poverty or a hurtful past. My own story of poverty, abuse, and neglect, gives testimony to the fact that where you are going is more important than where you have been. Organizations, like people, must grab hold of a future rather than suffer or, in some cases, glory in the past. The thing about history is that it exists in the past. Hope doesn’t live in the past. Hope lives in the future. One of the main reasons we work with children and provide services to their families is that we want to invest in the future. I am here today as the Executive Director of Patrick Henry Family Services because a group of visionaries started a ministry in this community sixty years ago but I will come to work tomorrow and every day after that, not because of those visionaries who started this work but because my own vision of what I want to leave to this community sixty years from now. We here at Patrick Henry are driven by mission, not by history. Mission expresses a goal not yet reached, a purpose not yet fulfilled, a hope not yet realized. Mission is what compels us into the unknown future with meaning and confidence. Yes, we are here

recognize that some of our efforts are little more than educated guesses, leaps of faith if you will, investments in something we hope will come to fruition. Anchored in core principles and driven by our desire to max out our timeless mission, we boldly launch out into the future, not unlike our founders did sixty years ago, believing that the Lord God has destined us to great things. Please join us as we move into the future. Make a gift today to us help get there. Enclosed in this issue of The Orator is a selfaddressed envelope for your convenience. Undesignated gifts to Patrick Henry Family Services are distributed to wherever the funds are most needed at the time. However you have the option, if you desire, to designate your gift to the ministry of your choice. Whether it is residential care, counseling, or camp, you can be assured that your gift goes directly to meeting the needs of that particular ministry. I want to thank you in advance for your generous donation and assure you it will be used efficiently. God bless you and please remember to pray for us. For the children,

Robert Day, Executive Director

Our Mission • Our Name • Our Logos As you read this special edition of The Orator, you will come to understand how our new name…Patrick Henry Family Services… and our various ministries fit together. Our logos will help guide you as you enjoy this issue.

ur mission is “to provide a continuum of services to distressed children and families that will keep families together and children safe and successful.” To fulfill that mission (and to help families contend with the dynamic challenges posed by our culture), we have built upon our original residential care concept with a series of other ministries, programs, and services. Each complements the other, and together, they help to create a foundation for healthy, secure families and communities. The steady expansion of our services has led us to change our name to Patrick Henry Family Services, reflecting the more comprehensive range of efforts in which we are now engaged. And with the help of generous and faithful donors*, we envision a time when our list of services may expand even further, enabling us to meet other growing needs facing children and families throughout the state of Virginia.

M Tomorrow

ore than 50 years ago, the ministry of Patrick Henry Boys and Girls Homes began as Patrick Henry for Plantation in a single brick cottage near Brookneal on the historic grounds of Patrick Henry’s Red HopeBoys Hill Plantation. In the following decades, the ministry has grown to comprise group homes for both boys and girls in five locations throughout the region. Together, our homes can accommodate more than 50 children ages 6 to 18. Each home is under the care of Christian houseparents, who model a loving family environment and encourage the children through all aspects of life and learning. We serve children who are victims of the many social ills of our time, whose parents are either unwilling or unable to raise them…kids who are going nowhere…or who have nowhere to go. Their parents or guardians place them with us in hope that someday their domestic situation may be stabilized. Ultimately, our goal is for the family to be reunited, or if that is not in the best interests of the child, for him/her to be fully prepared for independent living as a young adult.

amily counseling has long been a component of our services at Patrick Henry Boys and Girls Homes. Over the years, we have realized that many of the situations that led children to our care might have been avoided through counseling. That is why we began Hope for Tomorrow. Our Hope for Tomorrow Counseling centers, presently located in Lynchburg, South Boston, and Farmville are ready to provide discrete, uplifting assistance close to home. Whether ministering to individuals, couples, or entire families, our goal is the same: to bring peace and stability to lives in turmoil. Our licensed professional counselors seek to resolve conflict, mend relationships and restore families from a Christian perspective. In keeping with the ministerial aims of our organization, no one in need of our services is ever turned away due to inability to pay. AA M MIINNIISSTTRRYY OOFF

here are many families who may need some help in the upbringing of their children, but who may not be at the point of placing them in one of our group homes. To provide assistance to those families on a short-term basis, we created our Outreach ministry, the centerpiece of which is Hat Creek Camps and Conferences. Hat Creek is a 345-acre facility outside Brookneal that will provide children throughout Virginia (including those from disadvantaged homes) with Christian summer camp opportunities. In this scenic environment, children can experience the excitement and achievement associated with outdoor activities, while benefiting from the example of Christian mentors. Hat Creek also includes a lodge-style facility that can host a variety of events ranging from retreats to conferences to reunions.

current eighth grader at Rustburg Middle School, Raven decided to participate in track at school for the first time last year. Who would have guessed that she would set TWO new records for her school in long distance running? In addition, she received the Most Athletic Award at Patrick Henry’s awards ceremony in June. In July, Raven attended the High Performance Academy track camp at Virginia Tech where she was the youngest participant at the camp and left a lasting impression on all the track instructors. This camp is designed to enable track athletes to enhance their natural talents by improving stance, motion, and technique. Also, trainers and nutritionists support the athletes with proper stretching drills and healthy food choices. Raven said she enjoyed the camp and would like to attend again next year. Raven is extremely humble and does not inform others of her success. When asked how she did at a track competition (where she had set a record) she responded, “I did okay.” We congratulate Raven on her successes…she does far more than “okay”! PH

Patrick Henry Invitational GOLF TOURNAMENT CELEBRATES 35TH YEAR

T

he 35th Annual Patrick Henry Invitational golf tournament at Winton Country Club in Clifford,VA was held on July 29th and 30th. This tournament raises funds to support Patrick Henry Family Services (formerly Patrick Henry Boys & Girls Homes). Ryan Stinnett won his 7th handmade Patrick Henry corner chair as first place winner (again this year). Eighteen residents from the homes were present for the two day tournament. They earned tips by carrying bags, giving high-fives, and spotting golf balls in the fairways. Many of the seventy-nine golfers have participated all 35 years. J. D. Holton, who has played in the Patrick Henry Invitational for 30 of the 35 years, commented , ”this is the highlight of my tournament year!” Patrick Henry Alumni Coordinator Henry Carter thanked the golfers before the Sunday 9:00 a.m. shotgun start. “Twenty years ago I was one of the kids that many of you gave tips. Receiving a high-five and a few dollars was such an encouragement to me. It left an impression on me at that young age. Thank you for your kindness to me then and for your kindness to our kids today.” When one of the golfers was asked if he thought he might win, he responded to his friend, “the kids are the winners, it’s all about the kids.” PH

Counseling Center Offers Hope PATRICK HENRY FARMVILLE FACILITY OPENS By MARGE SWAYNE Reprinted with permission from the Farmville Herald

P

atrick Henry Boys and Girls Homes are continuing to expand their services in order to help children and families at risk. With the opening of the Hope for Tomorrow Counseling Center in Farmville on June 21, Farmville is now officially a part of Patrick Henry’s mission. When the first Patrick Henry children’s home opened in 1961 on a 1,000-acre parcel of Patrick Henry’s original Red Hill Plantation, the facility accommodated six boys. Today, Patrick Henry Boys and Girls Homes have facilities in Brookneal, Rustburg, Cluster Springs, Bedford, and Wyliesburg. “Patrick Henry has been caring for boys and girls for 50 years in our group home settings,” Executive Director Robert Day commented in a recent interview in Farmville. “Children come to us because there’s dysfunction in the home, there’s hurt, there’s something happening in the family. In our desire to max out our mission of rescuing these kids we recognize the key ingredients of a family, so we started a counseling center. We wanted to not only care for our children, we wanted to use counseling as a preventive. With one hand we’re parents of children in our homes, and with the other we’re trying to keep those children from coming to our homes.” The first counseling center opened in Lynchburg in 2007. “Hope for Tomorrow is the name of our counseling ministry,” Day related. “In June, 2011, we opened a second counseling center in South Boston. We thought it would do well, but we were surprised how well. Last year we cared for a total of 148 clients in the South Boston center, including 58 children under 18 years old. That’s exactly who we wanted to reach. As soon as we opened the door, professionals started sending us clients.” As with the other two counseling centers, referrals to Farmville’s facility, located in the former Farmville-Prince Edward Library building, will come from educators, doctors, and other professionals. Day sees Farmville as the perfect location for the new center. “We felt that the Farmville community would help us,” he said. “We have had a lot of support from the Farmville area in the past. It’s also ideal strategically since Prince Edward has become the hub for the counties surrounding it. If we offer services in Farmville, we can actually reach into seven counties.” “We offer professional, licensed, Christian counselors,” Day added. “We have the same commitment in our counseling centers as we do in our children’s homes in that inability to pay

14

PAT R I C K H E N R Y. O R G

is not going to be an issue. We have a generous sliding scale.” Patrick Henry’s funding, Day explained, comes from a solid base of supporters. “We’ve been blessed over the last 50 years with a base of supporters,” Day noted. “We have resources that serve as an endowment that allow us to expand as we’re doing here. Right now when many non-profits are reeling back because they’re losing their government resources, we’re actually expanding.” In addition to their counseling centers, Patrick Henry also offers the Step Forward program, a transitional living program for emerging adults. “When our kids turn 18 they still need family,” Day said. “This program offers assistance with finding a job, writing a resume, or health care needs. For those who qualify we also provide housing. To be 18 with no real job experience and suddenly be out of foster care — that’s a tough transition.” Another Patrick Henry ministry that will be available next year is a summer camp for at-risk children. “Hat Creek Camp was a church camp in Campbell County,” Day said. “We’re getting it up and running now. Our goal is to open a summer camp there in 2013.” Patrick Henry homes and other ministries do not accept government funding. “The children in our homes are placed there voluntarily,” Day added. Patrick Henry group homes accept children between the ages of six and 18 and have an average population of 50 to 60. In recent years, Day has noted an increase in one population — children from overseas adoptions. “We currently have two from Russia, one from Thailand, one from Ethiopia, and one from Brazil,” he related. “Somewhere along the line the adoptive family has said — we’re not going to do this anymore.” Patrick Henry has two plans or tracts for the children in their group homes. “We care for two kinds of kids,” Day observed. “Kids who have nowhere to go and kids who are going nowhere.” “Children in the family reunification tract are those we believe can be reunited with their families,” Day explained. “Our second tract is what we call independent living. With these children our goal is to get them ready for living on their own because they’re going to be with us until they turn 18.” The preferred choice, of course, is reuniting the family. Patrick Henry homes schedule two breaks during the year, one after classes end in June and the other at Christmas.

“Even at Christmas we have to have an open cottage — one for boys and one for girls,” Day said. “We always have some children that can’t go home. That breaks your heart.” Patrick Henry’s executive director understands the group home setting better than most. “My first home was a group home,” Day related. “My mom was 16 when she gave birth to me. She was placed in a foster home, and I was later placed in the same home. When she turned 18 she left and took me with her. It was just one long life of dysfunction. I was in and out of foster care in a number of places, so I have a personal passion about it.” Day’s was a foster care success story. “I chose two careers,” he said. “I have a master’s in social work and later I received a master’s degree in divinity. Most of my professional life has been in child welfare-type agencies.” “When the position at Patrick Henry became available it felt like everything I had been doing both professionally and personally led me to this,” Day added. “I just celebrated two years there — it’s a great organization.”

Patrick Henry Boys and Girls Homes have their share of success stories as well. “We just held our award ceremony for the year,” Day said. “We bring in all the kids and as many of the family members as will come. There are a number of awards — like most improved and best academic. A lot of our alumni will come back for the award ceremony too.” This year’s speaker was a Patrick Henry graduate from 1999. “He told the kids, ‘It’s going to be all right. These people here really do love you, so don’t reject that,’” Day related. This year’s awards speaker, currently an EMT in Roanoke, is one of Patrick Henry’s success stories. “He received a hero’s award for saving a man’s life,” Day noted with pride. Saving lives is, in fact, the goal of all Patrick Henry ministries. “It takes all of us working together as a community,” Day concluded. “Our goal at Patrick Henry is making a difference — one life at a time.” PH

Meet Our New Trustees

We are pleased to announce that GREG BUCKNAM has been elected Patrick Henry’s FIRST ALUMNUS member to the Board of Trustees. Congratulations, Greg!

GREG BUCKNAM considers this “coming home” as he joins the Board of Trustees. However, this former resident of Stephens Cottage (1973-1976) has never really “left” Patrick Henry. He and his wife Tracy live in Richmond and have served on our Advisory Board for many years. They have stayed in touch with the Patrick Henry family by visiting campus to deliver homemade cookies and books for the children, participating in alumni contacts, speaking up for Patrick Henry wherever they find an opportunity, and supporting our ministries financially. In fact, the Bucknams have established a scholarship at Danville Community College (Greg’s alma mater) to benefit other Patrick Henry alumni. Greg is a Telecommunications Engineer Supervisor for the Virginia State Police and travels in his work which provides opportunities for him to spread the word about Patrick Henry Family Services throughout the state. Greg has succeeded as a responsible adult in today’s world, thanks to his self determination and the work ethic he developed at Patrick Henry. Welcome home, Greg!

DR. GEORGE BLUME , a VA Tech Professor Emeritus, became involved with Patrick Henry in 1976 when the American Legion was asked to raise funds for the craft shop. More recently he served as Co-Chair of an American Legion committee to restore the craft shop. Dr. Blume developed an even deeper interest in Patrick Henry while serving as chauffeur for his wife Edna Earl on their trips from Blacksburg for Advisory Board meetings where she has served for more than 10 years. Following service in the Army in World War II, Dr. Blume continued his education by obtaining a BS from VA Tech. an MA from Louisiana State University, and a PhD from the University of Missouri. He then returned to VA Tech in a position with the Department of Agriculture and the State Cooperative Service where he worked with rural men, women, and the 4-H. During his service he authored numerous publications and received recognition at state, national, and international levels for his youth contributions in the areas of citizenship, careers, government, health and teenage marriage. We are grateful for both Dr. and Mrs. Blume’s commitment to Patrick Henry Family Services.

Shortcut High P

atrick Henry Family Services has established a partnership with Jerry Bower’s Shortcut High school bus. This Central Virginia “hotrod” icon helps promote our community outreach programs. The Shortcut High bus is appearing for Patrick Henry along with its builder and creator, Jerry Bowers, at many events this year. Bowers states he had been looking for a Central Virginia non-profit to form a team, but until now had not found the right fit. After meeting with Robert Day, executive director, he says that he has found the team he wants to partner with. Shortcut High began life as a 1949 Ford school bus. After losing seven feet in length and three and a half feet of height, getting a new 403 cubic inch Old’s engine and a Cadillac Eldorado frame, the glistening yellow bus appears ready to take on just about anything. Bowers has traveled the nation with the bus in the ten years since it was built. He has visited 45 states, attending numerous car shows. Shortcut’s You Tube videos have had over 6 million views. Shortcut has appeared on many TV shows as well. Discovery Channel’s Monster Garage featured

Shortcut High, as have ABC News, Fox and Friends and the Speed Channel. Mr. Day, is excited to bring Shortcut High to the Patrick Henry Family Services team. “We have many new initiatives to promote, and Shortcut High gives us great visibility at many of the events we attend.” If you are interested in having Short Cut High at your event, call Guy Stockslager at 434-239-1128 and schedule Shortcut High to come to your event. Patrick Henry Volunteers Recognized

P

atrick Henry Family Services is blessed with the generosity of many people in the community who want to reach out beyond themselves and serve others. On April 24, 2012, we sponsored our first Volunteer Appreciation Dinner. It was our intention to show each person in attendance how much he/she is valued as a volunteer to this organization. The dining hall on the Brookneal campus was beautifully decorated and a delicious hot buffet dinner was served, followed by a homemade dessert. Robert Day, executive director, addressed the group of volunteers with words of encouragement and thanks. Heather Bennett, volunteer coordinator, along with Kathleen

Lansing, former volunteer coordinator, also shared their appreciation for the invaluable work that is offered throughout the year. The continued enthusiasm, energy, and love our volunteers freely offer help make Patrick Henry Family Services a genuine place of hope for our children and their families. Volunteers were presented certificates of appreciation for over 9,200 total hours served last year. Special recognition was given to the volunteers who served the most hours: Sarah Hatcher, Tammy Preston, Dave Johnson, Greg Hains, Ella Hains, and Karen Day. PH

The Greatest Influence A TTENTION PARENTS:

As heard on one of Mr. Day’s recent broadcasts...

No one has more potential to influence your children than you. Because of your position and authority you have enormous influence to shape the lives of your children—more than teachers, pastors, coaches, more than their peers, even more than movie stars and American Idols. Here is why—you are the stewards of influence. You decide who and what will

influence your children—their character, their self-esteem, their attitudes and beliefs. You decide who and what has access to your children’s minds and hearts. That is enormous potential but with it comes enormous responsibility. Are you starting to feel a little pressure? Good. If parenting isn’t a little intimidating, then maybe you don’t really Understand how critical your role is.

How do we REACH and IMPACT the next generation?

H G U O R H T ! G N I P M CA

Patrick Henry Family Services has set its course and embarked on a new ministry: HAT CREEK CAMPS & CONFERENCES

T

he Christian community as a whole is struggling to remain connected with the next generation of children, teens and young adults. Generation what? You may have heard of “The Silent Generation” or the “Traditionalists” (1927-45), or the “Baby Boomers” 1946-64, and you may have even heard of the “Gen Xer’s or Busters” (1965-83), but are you ready for the “Gen Y’s or the Millennial’s (commonly known as the Mosaics) (1984-2002)? How do we reach the “Gen Z’s or the DG’s (Digital Generation) (2003-Current)? Gen Z kids will grow up with a highly sophisticated media and computer environment and will be more Internet savvy and expert than their Gen Y forerunners. If we’re already to Z, what could possibly be next? More to come on Gen Z... you might want to tune into our blog or latest tweet…what was that? Exactly! The faith journeys of children, teens and young adults are often challenging for many parents and faith leaders, who often misunderstand how and why young people become disconnected. Another aspect of teen culture is the prodigious influence of and access to media. No generation has had more entertainment choices — and none has spent more time taking full advantage of these media options. A recent study by the Kaiser Family Foundation shows that the typical Mosaic spends 8 1/2 hours each day using various media, including television, radio, music, print resources, computers, the Internet, and video games. That time is compressed into about 6 1/2 hours since they often use more than one media at once (for example, listening to music and spending time online). Still, teens today are spending more than an hour more every day consuming media than teenagers did just 5 years ago. There is no magic solution or formula for effective ministry to teenagers. The most important thing is to have a clear vision for ministry. Second to clear vision is being REAL. Young people today, now more than ever need the truth, the Truth that is only

found in the gospel message of Jesus Christ. We believe that camping is the way to reach the next generation, to expose them once again to the wonders of God’s creation, to pull away from the instant gratifications of society and technology, to silence our soul in the solitude of nature, all the while having FUN in a safe environment. Our desire here at Hat Creek Camps & Conferences is to provide another ministry for Patrick Henry Family Services and to be an outreach in the areas of Christian camping, conferencing and retreats to the local community, state and region that will fulfill, amplify and compliment the overall mission of PHFS. The primary mission of Hat Creek Camps & Conferences – A Ministry of Patrick Henry Family Services is to provide disadvantaged children with an opportunity to experience Christian camp, and to act as an identifier of family issues prevalent in our culture today. Our vision is to glorify Jesus Christ while honoring the traditions and values of Patrick Henry; exemplifying the great virtues of Christianity through the ministries of camping and conferences in a modern and relevant context. The history that surrounds Hat Creek is one filled with lore and rich tradition. One of the nine settlements on the Virginia frontier (c.1730-1740) was John Irving’s Hat Creek colony. He and his wife, Mary Boyd, and their eight children settled in about 1738 in the southeastern part of the present county near a small stream, afterwards known as Hat Creek. Together with other settlers the Irvings built a large log church on a prominent hill between the Little Falling River and Hat Creek. John Irving donated the land for this, and the present day Hat Creek Presbyterian Church occupies the same site next to the original cemetery. The camp’s property has been in family or church hands throughout the generations. By the 1840’s much of the property was owned by the Hammersley family. In 1846, Jane B. Hammersley gave about 100 acres to

Sam Williams Leaves $125,000 Bequest to Patrick Henry

S

amuel Haines Williams, Jr., who died in April at age 91, was a generous supporter of Patrick Henry Family Services for many years. He remembered our children when it was time to go back to school, when it was Christmas time and at birthdays. A Lynchburg native and Phi Beta Kappa graduate of the University of Virginia, Mr. Williams proudly served in the US Navy during World War II

before entering the banking business. He served as a Trust Officer and Vice President with First National Bank of Lynchburg (currently SunTrust) for more than 40 years. His sound knowledge of prudent investment, trust law, and estate planning, along with his scrupulous honesty, guided many of his fellow citizens through their careers and retirements. He was a lifelong member of St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, served as treasurer for 42 years and was a member of the choir for 69 years as well as serving several times on the vestry. While Mr. Williams enjoyed a wide variety of interests, he will be most remembered for his sense of duty to God and country and his commitment

Commemorative Patio Gets New Bricks

J

ust one year ago in celebration of our 50th Anniversary, we began offering commemorative bricks for donors to provide a lasting tribute to individuals and groups who are special to Patrick Henry. Each brick paves the way to Patrick Henry’s future and allows the donor to recognize a deceased family member or friend, honor a special person or people, or commemorate a special occasion. Commemorative bricks are installed in the Memorial Patio in front of the administration building on the Brookneal Campus. Already a number of individuals, organizations and churches have ordered bricks that are now in place in the Patio. Think about it, each time you visit the Patio, you will be reminded of those who have played an important role in the history of this special place. What better way to provide a lasting memory

on the Patrick Henry campus than to see the names of individuals, organizations, and others who have made their marks on the lives of the children and families served by this ministry. Please consider ordering a brick or bricks to honor those who are special to you. The proceeds from the bricks support the ministries of Patrick Henry Family Services. Naming dedication ceremonies are held at various times throughout the year. Each brick contains three lines of copy with up to 18 spaces in each line (includes spacing and punctuation). Each brick is $500 and may be reserved by completing the order form provided on the gift envelope in this Orator. For questions or further information about commemorative bricks, please contact Harriet Whitten at 434-6601873 or hwhitten@patrickhenry.org. PH

to the betterment of his community through his charity and moral example. “He was a generous person who thought it was his God-given duty to bless other people as he had been blessed,” said his niece, Elizabeth Hutter. “He never expected a thing in return for his generosity. Each day he thought ‘What can I do today to make better the lives of others?’” Mr. Williams was involved with more than 20 non-profits in Central Virginia. According to his niece, her uncle selected to support those organizations which he considered good stewards of their resources. His bequest to Patrick Henry Family Services was one of many he left as his legacy. Clearly, Mr. Williams led by example. PH

he following donors made honor or memorial gifts to Patrick Henry Family Services in recognition of those who have made a difference in their lives. These gifts not only help our ministry, but they also live on as a lasting legacy to those who are honored. In fact, many people have been introduced to Patrick Henry Family Services through honor and memorial gifts. When honor and memorial gifts are received, our office promptly notifies the honoree or the family of the deceased and provides the name and address of the donor of each gift. The following gifts were received from March 1, 2012 to July 31, 2012. PH

Annual Report

& Honor Roll of Donors 2011-2012

Annual Report

Dear Supporters, T

he 2011-2012 fiscal year was one of celebration, growth, and renewal. We gave thanks for fifty years of service, added new ministry locations and programs, and rekindled our passion for the mission. This Orator is dedicated to those of you who helped make our fiftieth year possible by your contributions of money, time, talent, and other resources.

2011-2012

As you can see from the chart below, we received very little income from those we serve. Payments and Fees (families supporting their children at Patrick Henry) and Hope for Tomorrow income (clients paying for services at Hope for Tomorrow) make up a very small fraction of our total income. While both categories are showing increases from previous years because of renewed efforts on our part, the relatively small amounts clearly illustrate our commitment to a promise the founders of this ministry made decades ago: we will not turn away any child because of an inability of the family to pay.

Thankfully, through the loyal support of our friends over the years we have a healthy investment and trust income that has become a cornerstone of our annual budget income. Donors who sadly are no longer with us still make a significant difference every day through their estate plans. What a blessing it is to this ministry.

AR2

When it comes to operating income, there are three things you should know about Patrick Henry Family Services: 1. We do not receive any government funding. 2. All administrative costs are covered by investment and earned income. So every dollar donated goes directly to ministry expenses. 3. We do our very best to make sure we run an Efficient operation in order that we might meet even more needs. In addition to monetary gifts we are blessed with an abundance of gifts-in-kind. These may come in the form of discounted or free services or goods from our vendors. Many of them come to us as material goods donated by individuals, businesses, churches, and organizations. Most of these gifts are used in the various areas of the organization and some are sold in order to raise additional income. No matter the form, gifts-in-kind are a crucial part of keeping this ministry going.

Any report would be incomplete if we did not give credit to our volunteers. Last year nearly 200 individuals served an amazing 11,762 hours in some area of our organization: mowing grass, cooking meals, tutoring residents, and a host of work projects just to name a few. Based on a low figure of $10.00 an hour, these dedicated volunteers added $117,622 worth of value to Patrick Henry.

But the story doesn’t stop there. As the chart below demonstrates we are meeting other needs as well through our equine program (Unbridled Grace), transitional services (Step Forward), and our various outreach programs.

of Hope for Tomorrow. The multiplying effect of this ministry to future generations makes it a terrific investment. Of course, all this costs money. Our full operating expenses for this fiscal year were $3,339,203. While all our various programs cost money to run, the lion share of our annual expenses goes to operating our seven group homes. Things like maintenance, utilities, food, clothing, staff salaries, transportation, recreation, and the special needs of the children such as medical and dental care quickly add up.

Annual Report

The sacrificial support of our donors and volunteers has benefited a number of children and their families this past year. Patrick Henry Boys and Girls Homes (PHBGH), our legacy ministry, provided 24/7 care and intervention for fifty-four children. This makes Patrick Henry one of the largest children’s homes in the state of Virginia.

On average it costs us about $225,000 to operate just one home. To put this in perspective, that figure is lessened when we consider that the state pays about $79,000 for one child in a group home for one year. Our cost is closer to $27,000 per child. With the families of our children paying only about 10% of the cost (many not paying anything) and the fact that we do not take state funding, we must by necessity secure funding from other sources. Our Hope for Tomorrow ministry showed significant growth last year as we added more locations and increased the number of clients served.

As I close let me assure you that the trustees and staff of Patrick Henry Families Services is committed to making the 2012-2013 fiscal year even more successful. We do this with the full faith and knowledge that our efforts result in meaningful and lasting help to those we serve. Please join us, partner with us, to meet our current commitments, expand our services, and reach more children and families in need. Thank you very much,

In addition to our residents, 435 adults, adolescents, and children from Virginia communities were helped through the counseling services

Honor Roll of Donors ANNUAL DONOR LIST JUNE 1, 2011–MAY 31, 2012

T

his Honor Roll of Donors recognizes gifts to Patrick Henry Family Services made in the 2011-2012 fiscal year (June 1, 2011 through May 31, 2012).

We thank the many donors, which include individuals, churches, organizations, businesses and foundations. This support makes a significant difference in the lives of the children and families served through our ministry. Every effort has been made to include all donors. If your name has been omitted or recorded incorrectly, please accept our sincere apology and contact Mary Lynn Hawkins at 434-376-2006 or mlhawkins@patrickhenry.org.

Founders Society

F

rom the very beginning, planners and founding leaders of Patrick Henry Boys Plantation (now Patrick Henry Family Services) were business owners, men and women of finance and industry, merchants and manufacturers, ministers and civic leaders, who came together committed to helping children and families in distress. Now 50+ years later, more than 1,000 children have been served and cared for by the supporters and the volunteers of Patrick Henry Family Services. As we embark on the next half-century of Christian service to children and families, we honor our founders-past, present and future by establishing a Founders Society in support of the children. By joining our Founders Society, donors honor the original founders while ensuring the financial support so necessary for the children’s well being today. Membership in the Founders Society is based on the total giving of $1,000 or more in a fiscal year-June 1 through May 31.

2011-2012

While our Founders Society giving levels have been established, we request your help now in naming the gift levels. Originally, we thought it fitting to name them in recognition of the first leaders of Virginia; now we believe it more fitting to name our giving levels in honor of our own Founders of yesteryear and even those of recent influence. As so many people have been meaningful in our growth and success, we hope you will help us name our gift levels. Please send your suggestions to Patrick Henry Family Services, 860 Red Hill Road, Brookneal, VA 24528 or email info@ patrickhenry.org. We encourage your input, so please let us hear from you soon.
