Racism is a major social justice issue in the United States of America. The discrimination of African Americans has been an ongoing and important social justice issue among the politicians in America. This social justice issue is spread throughout America, and is still prominent in modern society. Slavery was the original cause of the problem, as the African Americans were imprisoned and made slaves by the southern colonies of America. This was prominent between 1916-1865, with many White Supremacist groups, such as the Ku Klux Klan often killing and torturing the African Americans. This is shown on page 1, with the picture of a Ku Klux Klan rally. The social justice issue of slavery, which mainly concerns the first 10 articles of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, was abolished in 1865. President Abraham Lincoln fought for equality of the African Americans, and in 1865 freed them from slavery, with the historic Proclamation of Emancipation, which is shown on page 2. Even after Lincoln freed the African Americans from slavery, it was not the end of the racial discrimination. Racial segregation was a major issue between 1865 to the 1960’s. The African Americans were treated by both the government and society as an inferior race. They were often segregated from the white people, in all public areas, even schools and churches. This is evident on page 3, with the Rex Coloured Theatre which was one of the only theatres African Americans could go to. This changed due to the Civil Rights Movement of the 1960's, led by Martin Luther King Jr, Rosa Parks and other important figures. The racism of America was shown through the numerous African American arrests, most famously with Rosa Park’s arrest on December 1, 1955 which is shown on page 5. This fuelled the retaliation by the African Americans, with many protests and boycotts occurring after the event, as shown on pages 4, 6 and 7. Martin Luther King Jr was known for many strong, powerful and non-violent protests. He is known mostly for his speech that occurred on the 28th of August, 1963, the infamous “I have a dream speech.” This was during the March for Jobs and Freedoms movement in Washington D.C, shown on pages 8, 9 and 10. King was also running the first African American to run for Presidency of the United States of America. Barack Obama then became the first successful African American President, shown on the front and back covers. His inauguration speech of 2009, shown on page 11, was a very famous and pivotal point in American history, which somewhat gave equal rights and racial equality to the African Americans.
