Envisioning the Essex Crossing: Massing on the Site
Introduction The project site is in Manhattan’s lower east side in the former Seward Park Urban Redevelopment Area. In 1967, New York City leveled 20 acres on the southern side of Delancey Street and removed more than 1,800 low-income largely Puerto Rican families, with a promise that they would eventually return to new low-income apartments. Competing forces within the neighborhood and the development community long debated whether the area should be used to develop affordable or market rate housing, for commercial or cultural uses, or all of the above. The Essex Crossing development as currently planned, however, could be criticized for following a larger bulk zoning than ideal, as well as for not requiring the highest degree of innovative and environmentally proactive construction and energy use standards. Your research and design concept will response.

SITE LOCATION
㐀 ᤠ
The area around our site on Essax and Delancey has easy access from the rest of the city via public transportation, vehicular transportation, and pedestrian walkways. Delancey is highly traveled two-way road that eventually connects to Williamsburg Bridge which brings drivers into and from Brooklyn. The site has two metro stops located in direct proximities, which connect to the F, J, Z, and M lines.
TRANSPORTATION With the sites close proximity to the subway stations, there is a large amount of pedestrian traffic around the site coming from the large scale apartment southeast of the site. Pathways through the site to connect the housing to the subway is critical and can help cut down on the distant from apartments to the subway. The site it also located in close proximity to a large commercial and dining area which cause a large amount of foot-traffic around the site. With the addition of a museum and a market this will only increase.

GO WITH THE FLOW In this concept the focus is on utilizing the current circulation and transportation paths around the site and offer differing programs within the circulation. Strong research behind the surrounding buildings and how they function will help evolve this concept and have large impacts on the arrangement of the site. The concept follows the flow of through the site.

DINNER AND A SHOW In a city as diverse as New York City, the architecture needs to accompany that, and maybe without even leaving you home. This concept offers large gathering places and residential spaces with views north toward the heart of the city. A museum with a green roof and glass openings so then you can get a glimpse of Warhol in a new light.

THE DIVORCE Everyone knows that one couple that is just not meant to be together. They do not work well when paired, and they cause unwanted conflict. Yes I am relating this to architecture. In this concept I separate the museum away from the residential and market space and create a gathering space in between, this space might also be known as a divorce attorney.

Glulam Architecture This was the first part of the Timber in the city project. We were challenged to research a glulam system and then produce a prototype based off of it. This exercise was done to help us to analyze not only the advantages, potentials, but also the limitations of Glulam in terms of Construction and fabrication, structural system, and architectural tectonics, but also get hands on action and create a physical mode. We were then going to present our research and work at KPF Architects and Freecell in New York City. During this assignment I was challenged by the research regarding the precedent I chose, but because of the difficulties behind it I was forced to think creatively to produce a new use for glulam wood structure.
GLULAM CASE STUDIES
EDWARD BISHOP CHAPEL The use of wood in this project attracted me because of its simplicity style while still unique and ornate. The Edward Bishop Chapel central structural system is made up of glulam wood columns that transform into beams to create a unique waffle like structure to support the roof. When research this design it was very difficult for me to find a way to use it in a space that is more than one level while still keeping the beauty of the structure.
GYMNASIUM RÉGIS RACINE The Gymnasium RÊgis Racine have a very similar structure as the system used in Edward Bishop Chapel, but in a very different setting. Used in a gymnasium the wood has a rougher and tougher look, with a more spread out waffle structure and larger spans. During the early design phases of this project the clients made it clear that wood was to be used, resulting in the wood structure that leads into other structures around the building and into other buildings nearby.
CHARTRES CATHEDRAL While pondering the idea of how I could create a multi-story building using this type of wood structure I started to think of how renaissance cathedrals were built and noticed they had a similar structure to that of Edward Bishop and Gymnasium Regis Racine. Chartes, located in France, has a waffle-like structure and uses pressure from outside fources, as in flying buttresses, to stabilize the church. I utilized this type of structure in my prototype.

Glulam is a very versatile material that can be used in many different ways. During this exercise I explored the different ways it could be used in architecture. The glulam beams become very strong with the stacking effect the small pieces of wood takes. The beams are also lighter than reinforced concrete beams. The beams are created by smaller pieces of wood, instead of cutting down the large tree that would be needed for such size. It also can be coated so then it become fire resistant. The glue in the beams also help with the process. Because the wood beams are coated and treated many times their lifespans last longer than typical wood beams and structure. Glulam beams also uses less energy to produce compared to steel beams. The beams show of the innovative ways we can use, and has been allowing architects like Michael Green to create a wooden skyscraper. Something that once was only imaginary. Using my precedents I developed a method of stacking that mimics the classical buttresses used in Gothic Cathedral. The continuous beam and column structure allows for the weight to be spread out equally and not having too much stress in one area. When the smaller glulam piece meet the larger ones there are four smaller

Midterm Review Circulation is critical, but the spaces it creates is even more important. Circulation in buildings such as the Guggenheim is great, but the space in creates in the center is the reason it is as successful as it is. The circulation through the site can essential force people to see what you want them to see and this should be an important idea to focus on. What does the circulation cause to happen. The relationships between programs can create unique spaces. How does the museum work with the housing, how the housing works with the market, and how the market works with museum? All three can work together to create a space that is very unique in itself. Interlocking of programs. Connection between subway and Warhol Museum Housing and Museum Andy Warhol house Do not let the precedents limit the design. If the precedent does not work, do not use it, allow for exploration of different wood structures. Let the structure be simple.
Start to hone in and focus on a specific design. Currently there are many options but it needs to be narrowed in order for the project to be successful. Use the small diagrams to decide where you want to go next. Dinner and a Show How the programs work together, and what becomes the center piece for each area. Using the same modular but with different applications Work in section. The massing are a good start, but how can the space relate to each other better. How can one area change the mood, feelings, and atmosphere in others? Work in section Using other materials other than wood. How can I integrate other materials into my prototype while still having the main structure being wood/timber construction? Explore the possibilities Space is important. Simple can be best. Explore the prototype.
