There is true magic in fashion. From the mischievous twinkle in a McQueen sequin suit, to the cascading tulle train on a Dior dress, donning a drool worthy reaction from couture lovers around the world; fashion has the ability to fine tune creativity and craftsmanship into aspirational and wearable art. Whimsy and flights of fancy aside, fashion has a more important role in our lives. The clothes we wear are a direct reflection of our current social and economic moods. They are a beacon, expressing who we are and how we feel to the world, while connecting us to like minded folk. Without fashion, we are literally naked and without identity. During this unequivocal time of isolation, social distancing and economic uncertainty, creativity and a need to belong have never been more important. The group of students, designers and future tastemakers you are about to meet in this magazine come from all over the world with subversive sensibilities as diverse, interesting and beautiful as the places they come from. Blanche Macdonald Centre has a long history of nurturing unique talents. Our experimental approach to education and innovation has always been rooted in a place of love, compassion and a desire to see our students rise to their potential and find their footing in this truly special industry. Over the years, many talented and genuinely wonderful people have gone through our program, and they always hold a special place in our hearts. This past year however, the experience of working with these featured graduates was distinct. To put it candidly, it was an honour. Confronted with a plethora of obstacles that had most of the world hiding under their covers, the students in this magazine not only survived one of the most tumultuous years in our history, they thrived. Every day they channeled the anxieties felt around the world into a new craft, the craft of fashion design. Quickly adapting to unorthodox styles of learning, classes online and distancing restrictions, all the while acclimating to a fast paced program, these students showed up every day focused, excited and eager to learn, in earnest I might add. Day after day, month after month, we had the pleasure of watching these 22 novices blossom into fully realized designers. The clothing in this magazine was made with passion and a meticulous attention to detail, worthy of a luxury showroom; premium craftsmanship from the inside out. This is no small feat for even the most seasoned designers. Witnessing these students, many of whom had little to no garment construction experience prior to our program, produce this level of work, fills me with pride. Alongside Associate Design Director, Sara Armstrong, attuning into the role of mentor has been one of the greatest gifts of our accomplished careers. Without further ado, we proudly present the Blanche Macdonald Centre inaugural issue of our FD Magazine and the class of 2020 / 2021! Yours Sincerely,

Tyler Udall Executive Director, Fashion Design

Every year, three outstanding students are presented with the Blanche Macdonald Centre Award for Excellence. With so many remarkable graduates to choose from, it is never an easy task, but these three designers shone so brightly, they were impossible to ignore. Many contributing factors go into selecting these recipients: academic achievement, skill, dedication to their craft and program, growth and equally important, their voice and vision as a designer. These three graduates committed themselves 150% to their journey from student to designer. Each with such unique points of view and approaches, they all developed their collections with true curiosity, enthusiasm, passion and moxie. The Blanche Macdonald Centre Award for Excellence recipients will receive one year’s mentorship, access to Blanche Macdonald’s staff and resources and a fully sponsored runway show at Vancouver Fashion Week. Showing at Vancouver Fashion Week is a massive step into the industry, getting you in front of world leading editors and buyers. A solo show during an international fashion week is an achievement many designers don’t realize until much later into their careers… if ever. We feel confident that these designers will not only rise to the occasion, they will soar. Please join us in congratulating this year’s recipients: Daisy Cook, Amy Nunweiler and Rolla Summers! Congratulations to you three! We couldn’t be more proud and excited to watch you step into this next chapter of your careers.

daisy 1. Who are you? I’m Daisy! :)

2. Where are you from? England; from a small town called Tadley; not known for much.

8. What is your graduate collection about? I grew up in a quilting and crocheting household and knew that these traditional techniques were something I wanted to explore, but with delicate fabrics such as silks, chiffons and velvets. I guess when I think about it, my collection ended up being an unintentional ode to my grandmother and mother, using silhouettes they would’ve grown up with and techniques they taught me.

3. Star sign? Cancer!

9. Favourite part of your time at BMC?

4. Favourite colour? Bottle Green or a deep red ..or pink..maybe chartreuse…

Definitely when we all started making our collections as it was so rewarding to dream of something and then to see it realized, and to see what your classmates had created. There was just an excitement and you could all get swept up in it.

5. What is your favourite thing to wear?

10. What’s next for you?

Anything long and flowy perhaps in a floral!

6. Describe your aesthetic in five words or less. Eclectic, handcrafted, detail oriented.

7. If you were a fabric, what would you be? I like to believe I would be silk chiffon, but in reality, probably a bull denim.

Who knows?! I’m just going to continue doing the things I love and maybe other people will love them too.

BONUS. If you were going to figure skate in the Olympics, what song would you perform to? Shy FX - Gold Dust… something loud and fast so I can wave arms and distract from my 2 left feet.

amy 6. If you were a fabric, what would you be?

1. Who are you? My name is Amy Nunweiler, I am who I am, an all-around creative.

2. Where are you from? Medicine Hat, Alberta... Assuming that you’re unfamiliar, ‘The Hat’ is a small city in south eastern Alberta, Canada, made up of approx. 65,000 people.

3. Favourite colour? Overall, dark green or also called Viridian and deep red, aka Carmine also deserves an honorable mention. Concerning clothing, I gravitate most towards creams and blacks.

20 oz. duck canvas, unbleached. Canvas is most commonly woven with 100% cotton and notorious for small imperfections (which I believe should be better appreciated.) Duck canvas holds structure like no other cotton fabric and when unbleached it remains a beautiful creamy beige with tiny specs of brown throughout. .

7. What is your graduate collection about? ‘War Work’ can be simplified into the phrase “Something from Nothing.” Inspired by Women in the 1940s and the extent I imagine these women would have gone to make ends meet throughout war times

8. Favourite part of your time at BMC? 4. What is your favourite thing to wear? As previously stated, I feel most comfortable in variations of cream or black. I’m also a stickler for fiber content and I refuse to wear blended fabrics. Although if you’re looking for a specific garment or item, I’d say my Grandpa’s woven leather loafers – they’re stunning.

In simple terms, uncovering my design language. BMC truly left me with a solid foundation to build off of. One of my instructors, Sara, mentioned how we are a ‘master of nothing’ when we finish the program, but rather we have had a taste of everything and the experience needed to dive head first into the industry.

9. What’s next for you?

5. Describe your aesthetic in five words or less.

I am endlessly developing more skills and finding overlaps from one medium to another. Capsule collections will be the documentation of my learning.

Structured, simple, natural, & tonal.

rolla 7. What is your graduate collection about? Inspired by a woman’s nature and harmony. I wanted to express feminine beauty through structure by combining empathy and power with knowledge and the contrasting ideas of confidence and insecurity.

An adventurist; a person who is open to learn about life. To enjoy the good and the bad. I’m a big fan of art, music and innovation. Have a bachelor’s degree in psychology from University in my home country, Lebanon; now starting my dream in the fashion world!

My clothes are a representation of my feelings; to let go of any insecure energy in my body and to express my inner passion for making someone feel good. To me, it’s all about energy and how you come off. With each garment, I put every ounce of my focus into making the garment flow with the woman’s body. My clothing targets a younger generation of women who aren’t afraid to dress differently. I would love to see people on the street imagine them in different ways! I always see beauty in every woman’s face.

2. Where are you from?

8. Favourite part of your time at BMC?

1. Who are you?

Beirut, Lebanon!

3. Star sign? Leo: Belongs to the fire element; I have a warm perspective on life.

4. Favourite colour? I love bold colors... gold, orange, pink.

5. Describe your aesthetic in five words or less.

It’s been a long and emotional journey for me since my first day. I tried my hardest to push myself and get out of my comfort zone. As each day went by, I felt a flood of knowledge, especially with Peggy Morrison. I felt honored each time I attended her class, as she provides nothing but her wealth of knowledge about every fashion designer you can imagine. During my stay, I felt daily improvements in my education and personal life as I began to learn things that will certainly impact my future for the best. My favorite courses were pattern making and garment construction with Sara Armstrong. The trust and belief she and Tyler Udall had for me was a big motivation to prove and achieve my vision; I’m honored by their support.

Contemporary. Sensual. Opulent.

BONUS. If you were going to figure skate in the Olympics, what song would you perform to?

6. If you were a fabric, what would you be?

Love Me Like You Do by Ellie Goulding.

Silk, because I’m smooth and easy to talk to.
