hermes x vans Whats worse than coveting some bad-ass shoes that you can’t afford? Finding out you can’t buy them at all, ever. That’s the case with these incredible bespoke Vans, which were made by Vans for Robert Verdi out of his personal Hermes scarf collection.

NIXON Leopard

Cambridge x Christopher Shannon

The 51-30 Chrono watch looks set to capitalise on this new, more experimental approach to menswear by taking the notoriously controversial leopard print and using it to re-work and revitalise its most popular model.

bluejob Blue - Blue is definitely the new black. From rich royal blues of Roberto Cavalli, Jil Sander, Missoni and Paul Smith to the deep navy from Prada, Diesel and Dior to the playful teals of Lanvin, Bottega Venetta, Jonathan Saunders, and Fendi, the color blue is sure to make you look and feel good.

no red, no right Red – Power. Love. Anger. Red is definitely a showstopper. Pick your red from the runways of Jonathan Saunders, John Paul Gaultier, and Paul Smith displaying crimson pull-ups and shirts. Maybe wine colored jackets and trousers from Hermes, Jil Sander, Prada and Kris Van Assche or the bright outburst of red-orange from Gucci.

18- BLANC MAGAZINE - THE MEN ISSUE

y3llohw pfowhz Yellow – Be it bright lemons like the ones displayed in Louis Vuitton, John Paul Gaultier, and Ferragamo or delicious mustards from Paul Smith, Jil Sander, Burberry, and Kenzo, yellow is the perfect splash of color for your everyday get-up for spring. You can also play it sweet with the pastels of Jonathan Saunders and T by Alexander Wang or you can go bold with a shimmering number from Ports 1961.

puto sikwate Black and white – The color (or not) present in every man’s wardrobe; black and white never goes out of fashion. You can layer it up like the ones in Alexander Wang and Givenchy or have it custom-made like the bespoke pieces from Kris Van Assche and Gucci. Go quirky like the looks from Rick Owens and Issey Miyake or super sleek in Paul Smith. It’s so versatile that you won’t go wrong.

BLANC MAGAZINE - THE MEN ISSUE - 19

WIDE AWAKE Shorts – Shorts are perfect for pulling off that casual look. Pairs from Dolce and Gabbana, Christopher Kane, Carven, Louis Vuitton and J.W. Anderson would be perfect for a walk on the beach. But shorts are not just for off-days. You can wear one to the office with Raf Simon’s short shorts or Ports 1961’s crisp white version.

Teach me how to Baggy Baggy - Punks not dead! The revival of the baggy clothes in Ann Demeulemeester, E. Tautz, Etro, Lanvin and Yohji Yamamoto. Tres Chic!

20- BLANC MAGAZINE - THE MEN ISSUE

Shamsuit Supsup Jumpsuits – We all know that jumpsuits look better when men wear them. Whether it is the muscled fight fighter, the chiseled plumber or the sweaty mechanic, we all love guys in uniform. Juun J, Lanvin, Les Garcons, and Walter Van Bierendonck displayed the classic jumpsuits while Pierre Cardin opted for something tight-fitting. Whether decked in lace like in J.W. Anderson, sleek like in JPG, or loose thanks to Rick Owens, jump in!

Flowerfuff Floral – “Florals for spring? Groundbreaking!” were Miranda Priestly’s immortal words from the Devil Wears Prada. And surely the brands heard her as f lowers are budding and blooming in the runways of Christopher Kane, Dolce and Gabbana, Paul and Joe, and Versace.

BLANC MAGAZINE - THE MEN ISSUE - 21

A LACE IN WONDERLAND Lace – Done to death by our female counterparts, Lace has decided to grace the presence of the menswear shows. See-through shorts at Frankie Morello, or delicate shirts from Carlo Pignatelli, Dries Van Noten, and Pierre Cardin, who says the men can’t have it?

Pag-shooooorts? Shorts – Shorts are perfect for pulling off that casual look. But shorts are not just for off-days. You can wear one to the office with Raf Simon’s short shorts or Ports 1961’s crisp white version.

22- BLANC MAGAZINE - THE MEN ISSUE

38, 39, Sporty Sporty – Most men I know like to play sports but for the few who likes to play it cool in the bleachers, the sportswear inspired outfits will do. You can go diving with Louis Vuitton or skiing with DSquared. These looks will surely score you points whether you’re an athlete or not

Stripe tease Stripes – Horizontal or vertical, you won’t feel barred inside one of these looks from the menswear shows. Jonathan Saunders opted for the staple pinstriped ensemble while Armani showed slabs of skin (and nipples) with his delicate tops. My pick? John Paul Gaultier’s black and white look that sent f lashbacks of Gwen Stefani’s Sweet Escape. BLANC MAGAZINE - THE MEN ISSUE - 23

HAT IN HERRE! Hats – Either printed with f luffy clouds like in John Galliano or the classic fedora like in Marc Jacobs, hats will surely stay atop the heads of fashion-forward men. Enough with the baseball caps! Flamboyant top hats courtesy of Walter Van Beirendonck, turbans from John Paul Gaultier, and perforated fedoras from Henrik Vibskov will get all the love come spring.

Mer-shimmer-shimmer-shi Metallics - Ref lective candy-wrapper separates displayed in Burberry while Lanvin, Margiela and Roberto Cavalli opted for the classic sheen in matte jackets and bottoms. Versace’s gold pieces from jackets to pants to belly shields to models was a big hit, as well.

no, Dos, Dress Dresses – Dresses for men? An easier way of dressing, I say. Go ahead and take your pick. Breezy pull-ups from Versace, Vivienne Westwood and Rick Owens, an artsy take from Raf Simons, casual daywear from Juun J, structured goods from Comme des Garcon, Givenchy and Issey Miyake, and a white sheath from Carlo Pignatelli. Enjoy!.

EDITORS’ PICK

SPRING /SUMMER 2013 MENSWEAR

LANVIN Lanvin’s collection had a relentless drive from beginning to end. Defined by the tension between fashionable opposites: classic versus high-tech, linear versus rounded, detail versus no detail.

JUNYA WATANABE An earnest, sweetly urban collection from Junya Watanabe that’s not so far from his signature structured collections from the past. His bespoke jackets have a lot going on inside, with collared linings and interesting seaming.st sobriety to preppyon-acid.

GIVENCHY Religion and sex has been done to death but Givenchy’s Ricardo Tisci has a finely tuned sense of the power and allure of both saintliness and sin with this season’s collection. Tisci’s genius for graphic prints might make Virgin Mary as inescapable as birds of paradise are now, and rottweilers were then.

26- BLANC MAGAZINE - THE MEN ISSUE

MUGLER Mugler’s Nicolas Formichetti went under the sea for inspiration. Not literally, his aquatic theme focused on colors like oyster, sand, coral, and seafoam, And in materials like oily leather “jellyfish fabric”. Sharp exoskeleton tops revealing shards of skin with structured shoulders. The collection felt closer than it ever has to standing on solid ground

THOM BROWNE Thom Browne’s mythological staging matched his severe layered and cropped collection. Candy-colored ginghams and madras, beaded lobster appliqués, whale-print trousers, knee socks his palettes shifted from Calvinist sobriety to preppy-onacid.

J.W ANDERSON Provocative, J.W. Anderson’s Spring 2013 is a cross-pollination of his women’s Resort Collection, an extension of the madbad housewife women’s collection for Fall. The collection was downright feminine with fabrics like Organza and Taffeta. There was also this Pepto pink coat that buttoned on the bias

MENS FASHION MUST HAVES

By: Kiko Kintanar

Essential items every man should have.

First off one must have a pair of good shoes. “Boat Shoes” are a must have, It was a trend back then and now it’s getting pulled off again. Hit it off with neutral colors since they could never go wrong with any pair of normal jeans; this could be one of your everyday accessory.

Speaking of jeans, it’s nice to start off with one perfect pair of denims and experiment with different colors after. That’s another note to a must have.

Plain shirts can never go wrong. You can pull up any plain colored shirt if you want to play along the chill side; then again a splash of color in your wardrobe won’t get you arrested by the fashion police.

28- BLANC MAGAZINE - THE MEN ISSUE

The other set of “Must Haves” are ones for the “Hipsters”. First off my list on the hipster lane is a pair of denim wears. I think denims are straight off hipster. A must have is a plain denim polo. It doesn’t matter if it’s raw denim or bleached, either way, a must have. Aztecs and Prints are also now getting my attention and certainly I need one in my own closet.

BLANC MAGAZINE - THE MEN ISSUE - 29

Off with the plaid and striped shorts! Another must have now are colored walking shorts. Color is the new game trend now.

In my own opinion, one can’t pull of a look without a good accessory and for me that’s a good watch or a pair of sunnies. I can never feel all set without my handy watch.

BLOGGER ’ H I G H L I G H T

GERD http://gerdperez.tumblr.com

How did you start blogging?

Normally, how long do you prepare yourself?

To blog about something in particular wasn’t my very intention when I first created my Tumblr account. My reason was as cliché as everyone else: to express and share my emotions. But even before everything else, I already love fashion so as time goes on– just literally out of no where– I posted an outfit photo of me. No particular comments was I looking for for me to continue posting my outfits. There I decided to make my Tumblr account a style blog.

Deep inside my subconscious, I know I can be prepared in 40 minutes. I don’t plan my outfit a day or a night before I leave the house (except for very special occasions/ events), I mix and match on the spot so it can take me a good 1 hour to prepare. If I feel unlucky, it can be an hour and a half. I’m guilty.

What makes your blog different from other blogs?

It depends. There will be a time when you need to dress up like when you will be standing in front of a crowd or will be meeting a person of importance. There will be times when you don’t have to, like another ordinary day at school, a quick lunch with your family or just visiting your neighbor. For me, it’s just about dressing nicely and smart. Just wear something you know people will like and won’t make you look stupid. Just always think that you might meet your future wife/ husband on the way!

Besides posting outfit shots, I see to it that I involve something different as well. I include my portrait sketches, my personal day outs and some really weird stuff about me like washing the dishes or stroking a cat’s fur. Who is your style icon? Michael Concepcion, Pelayo Diaz and (everyone’s favorite) James Dean. Do you get inspiration from styles on the internet? Definitely! It’s safe to say that it is actually my number one source of inspiration. To be very specific, people from Lookbook.nu are just plain amazing with their styles. I get to learn a whole new lot of combinations just by scrolling down my mouse. Again, they’re amazing! Other than blogging, what keeps you busy? I am a very sporty guy. If God gave me the blessing of being taller than what I am, I would actually pursue anything to get myself into basketball. I can’t even describe how I love the game and being in the game! Besides from basketball, I play anything that uses a ball. I’m a gamer as well so I spend (some would say “waste”) a lot of time playing games too. I love reading books as well. Are there brands who contact you to give give-aways and what brands are those? There are actually a couple, but it didn’t push through to make it happen. I don’t think I’m ready to organize a giveaway just yet. If you ask me why, the question would probably be stuck forever unanswered because I don’t know the answer as well haha! I’m planning to do my very first one on January 2013.

38- BLANC MAGAZINE - THE MEN ISSUE

Do you prefer dressing up or dressing down? Why?

What’s your favorite piece in your wardrobe? My denim jacket from Forever 21. I can wear it on a laid back day and I can wear it on events. It’s my favorite! Since you’re into clothes, would you consider opening your own clothing line in the future? It’s my dream! I’m actually thinking of getting another degree in business management after I graduate. And I already have a name for it. I’ll be taking it step by step to make this a reality. I’m excited! Do you thrift shop? If yes, how often? And what do you look for? Yes! but not very often. I know my style very well so I already know what I should be looking for. I often keep my eyes wide open for sweatshirts and jackets. There are many awesome pieces out there waiting to be discovered by a very wise and practical person. I hope I can get there before they do! What are 5 things in your bag you can’t live without? A pen. Lip balm. Coin purse. Oil film and iPod. My camera and the pen can always interchange depending on where I’m headed to.

PEREZ Growing up, were you already into clothes? Haha! NO. I wore those baggy shirts. An elephant pants (that’s what they call it that time), “buddha beads” and sneakers. A typical kid. A normal kid if I must say. What motivates you to keep blogging? People who express their thoughts about my blog and saying I inspire them. It can’t get any better than that. Meeting new people along the way is also what keeps me going. No one can have too many friends they say. Are you more of an expressive blogger or an impressive one? Expressive one. What are your plans for the future? What can we expect from you, say, 5 years from now? Would you still be blogging? Where ever this blogging wind takes me, I’ll let myself go with it. I plan to be in a good position in a very stable job 5 years from now. I want to open a business for me and make it grow for future generations that will be coming from me. And if blogging is a bridge for me to make this all happen, definitely I’ll be doing this for as long as it takes. Long term is what I always think about.

People who express their thoughts about my blog and saying I inspire them. It can’t get any better than that. BLANC MAGAZINE - THE MEN ISSUE - 39

DESIGNER ’ S P O T L I G H T PROTACIO What do you do when you’re not designing? When I’m not designing, my mind is still engaged in a continuous creative activity. I surf, watch fashion films or read fashion books and magazines. What is your educational and professional background and how do you feel it prepared you for a career in design? I finished a degree in Fine Arts upon which I owe all my knowledge in the basics of art principles. What drew you to fashion and specifically to starting your own line? Have you always wanted to be a designer? As young as five, I was already scribbling fashion images. Of course at that time I did not know it could lead me to a career. In high school, I already had this consciousness of what the whole industry is about. And I was so eager to get in. I made lots of sketches and was able to materialize some. Most of which if not all ended up in the closets of my sister and mother. Tell us about your first collection (When did you decide to start your line, how was the process like, the inspiration behind it, do you have a favorite piece) My first collection was not under my own label. As a student I was working on the sides as a designer for a department store. I was so lucky to have a boss who was so trusting. She gave me a chance to do an entire collection for one particular label the store handles. It was one of my happiest moments seeing my designs on display in the stores major show window. What’s your vice of choice when you are super stressed? No vice! I just go to a lot of physical activity when under pressure and stressed. Who have you dressed so far? And who’s you’re favorite? Do you have a muse? Among my clients I don’t play favorites. But there is this client whom I am most challenged. He normally gives me inputs that I can work on. He is never hard to please but I know he has a very discriminating taste so I always put my best foot forward when I do orders from him. I always love our collaborative work. It’s always fabulous. I’m talking about Andre Chang.

40- BLANC MAGAZINE - THE MEN ISSUE

What would you say is your style of design like? Can I call it “modern romanticism”? It is always about classic concepts in design. Trying to find its way into the demands of modern living. In so many ways it is nostalgic without having to feel like it comes straight from grandma’s chest box! What is a normal day for you like ever since you get into designing clothes? My day starts very early. I’m a family man not by choice so I drive my nephew and nieces to school. So I get to my office at 7:30 am giving me more than enough time to prepare for work. Mornings are usually spent at the workshop giving instructions of what has to be accomplished for the day. Lunch is still in the shop with my usual concoction of local leaves and veggies plus fish or a small slice of meat occasionally. Then I report to work in the afternoon to meet appointments and do fittings. Work ends at 6pm then I hit the gym. What is your design process like? When I entertain clients I conceptualize design by pen and paper. But when I want to explore new things I design with a pair of scissors and muslin. Would you consider going international/ work abroad? If yes, then where would you like to be based? At this point in time, no. Cebu is fast growing and I’m taking that opportunity. I still have plans of expansion and I still dream of having a place to display my designs on retail. What are you currently working on? I was so thrilled seeing Raf Simons new take on Dior. I got so inspired with the way he interpreted the classic peplum so I decided to do my own interpretation. I have always loved this detail but I never thought it could bring so many variations as I got to play with it. I have experimented on a few shapes and I intend to bring some more. Any other new projects you’re excited about? I got this invitation to participate in a show on September. So far I only have that to commit. Otherwise, I am now more focused on the business aspect in designing.

How is designing menswear different from making womenswear? Which do you like better? There are fewer limits and boundaries in designing clothes for women unlike menswear which requires a lot of artistic discipline. In designing clothes for men, design has to be true to its form and function. In other words you only have two arms and two legs to work on; beyond that can scare a male client away. Can you imagine a men’s coat with sleeves that drags to the f loor or trousers with a bustle? What advice would you give a fashion newbie or student, looking to become a designer? Today’s young talents do not have to go through the same struggles my generation had. Information comes so easy. It is only one click away unlike in my time where in I have to save to buy the latest issue of Vogue. So, my advice is for them to explore all possibilities this information can bring and take new challenges

Ice Bergg Truth be told:

Hip Hop is not just a musical genre but a way of life. Bernabe Ponla IV, known as Ice Bergg or simply Beejay among his peers is a living proof. Down-to-earth and full of wit, like an ice berg, as the cliche goes, you only see the tip of it: you see the Hip Hop exterior but the passion runs just as deep and as solid as it could get. He lives for it. A child who grew up listening to the inspiring music of Eminem and Tupak Shakur, he realized that he wanted to keep the fire burning and eventually matured together with his craft. When asked to rap for a showband in one of the local bars in Cebu, everything else started from there and so far, the universe has successfully conspired with his dreams. Before the FlipTop craze was celebrated all-over the nation, he and his friends were already into friendly rap battles and people started to pay attention.

A young band at it's peak in the local music scene, Drop Decay has definately started to have the audiences and critics alike at buzz. Despite their busy schedule, Drop Decay still had a few minutes for a little chat: BLANC: Why the band name? DROP DECAY:Vince and I(Tony) were playing in this high school cover band and decided we wanted to take things a bit seriously in terms of music and our goals. So we came up with another band(without the lead singer whos name started with a "K") and decided to call our new found project Drop Decay from wordplaying with Drop "The K" hekhek.. B: Describe your music style and inf luences. DDCollectively we listen to a lot of very different things. You have me (Tony) who listens to pop-punk and even mainstream stuff, Kenneth and Vince who are into heavier bands, and Job who's into Jazz and is considerably good at the technicality of it all. I still believe though that the core of our sound is still generally Pop-punk. B: So what are you guys currently up to? DD: Aside from writing more songs, we just finished shooting our second Music video for the song charades with Southernlads Productions. We'll be f lying back to Manila late this month for a show too. Other than that, we try to practice & play as much gigs as we can and promote ourselves online. B: Highest point and lowest point as a band? DD: Highest point- It's a battle between opening for U.S. bands There for Tomorrow, Every Avenue, and William Beckett in Manila or making it to MYX. Lowest Point- We've had some gigs when we first started out when productions would simply walk over us and move our set time last minute to make way for these other bands. But then again, It's all good though. It's part of the process.

B: Who is your personal male role model/hero in the past and present and why? Tony: Jack Black. What can he NOT do? Kenneth: Jose Rizal becuase he saved our country. Vince: My dad because he supported me in my band stuff even if my grades weren't doing so well. B: What is your favorite toy and why? Tony: Bewbs. Kenneth: Dragon Ball Z toys. I play with them till I fall asleep ha ha! Vince: My car because I like driving around with it. B: Shout out to your fans? DD: If you're in a band, quit now. Get an education, Find a job, settle down because #YOLO. And yeah, We want you guys to please vote for our video "I Wanna Touch You" on myxph.com daily and watch out for our upcoming video "Charades". :) Drop Decay is composed of: Tony Alfonso- Guitars/Vocals Vince Lucero- Lead guitars Job Penalosa- Drums Kenneth Lim- Bass Visit Drop Decay's Facebook page : facebook.com/ dropdecay Twitter: twitter.com/dropdecayph Instagram: dropdecay Tumblr: dropdecay.tumblr.com

SOUTHERNLADS PRODUCTIONS Who are they? Steven Canete: "Taicho": it means 'captain' in Japanese, the engine starter and basically the group's manager Jhe Butawan: The "side-kick" Karl Lucente: The "direk" Neil Briones: The colorist, DP and editor Steven Atenta: Editor and DP Gale Osorio: Set/Production designer as well as the group's "mother" Back in February 2010, a group of friends who were Advertising majors and some who were soon-to-be Film students from the University of San Carlos were asked to cover an annual event called FAR (Fine Arts Rocks) by the students who belonged to the College of Architecture and Fine Arts. From a slew to of random skits, film projects for school and trailers, they decided to become a team in which today, is one of the sought-after production groups in the city. Time spent with these guys are chaotic; because not a minute goes by without a new idea popping into their minds and every second is an on-going brainstorm. What's unique about this group is that although the core members are composed of 6, they are an open group who's ready to collaborate with other friends and artists. Despite the demands in terms of school work and time constraint, they inspire each other, listen to each other’s idea and would lay on the table something more than what you envisioned. For sometime now, they have been collaborating with Sonic Boom events, local bands like Bethany, Shuff led, and Drop Decay, plans to enter the BINISAYA Film Festival and a music video for Piero Vergara and other short films in their sleeves, it's just the beggining of a long list of accomplishments and soon-to-be acheivements. BLANC ASKS, Who is your male role model and why? Steven C: In the past it was Spiderman, You know kids and superheroes but now my role model is myself - me who has acheived my fullest human potental in everything I'm capable and good at.

INBORN He gazed at the panoramic view of the city, in a bar he managed located at Tops Cebu, he shared how he fell in love with art. “Comics may naginspire nako sa ako arts, sa una sa bata pa ko hilig gyud nako ang mga Pinoy Comics, ako sad to sundugon ang naa didto, diha gyud nagsugod sa illustrated novels or comics, diha ko na inspire… Unya na involve ko ug music kay ako maestro naka adto man sad sila sa gawas, magdala na sila ug mga plaka nga wala dri…” plaques brought by his mentors raised his interest to music. A multi awarded painter in his student days he transformed himself into an installation artist then later into performing arts then a songwriter and musician. “Naa man gihapon ang ako banda, naa pud and “Sigbin” ako studio kung asa ko mag-dj sa ako mga kanta” he shares. Budoy is known as the vocalist of the Cebu-based reggae band Junior Kilat. Together with one of his bandmates, he also co-produced and hosted the magazine show Ismol Tym, and endorsed products as well. “wala man kaayo kahibaw ang mga taw nga magpainting pud ko, naa sa website, naa didto ang ako mga artworks” Budoys artwork are visible in his website www.Budoy. com, is showcases his arts in different fields. His love for visual arts and music was born to him as time passed he drove to another aspect of his passion, film scoring. “Just recently nag venture kog movies, nag film scoring, magbutang kag music sa film… first ni nako nabuhat with Loy Arcenas usa ka film maker na nibalik karun gikan ug New York. Set director/designer siya unya iya ko gikuha as film scorer. The film “Requieme”, finalist of New Breed Full Length Feature Category from The 2012 Cinemalaya Film Festival and Competition. PANORAMA When asked about who bests the arts, man or woman, he stood and silently pondered. “Wala koy e-compare, di man mu matter tingali, murag dili naman sigro importante ang distinction kung male or female ba sa arts.

52- BLANC MAGAZINE - THE MEN ISSUE

Equal naman karun, ang tendency gud naa nay feminism, pero actually dili man necessary... bahala’g babae o lalaki kung maayo siya makita gyud na… Mao gihapon sa music di ma na mu matter. Abi kay ug babaye taga-an kag emphasis, kung maayo ka maayo gyud ka… kung lalaki ka unya dili ka maayo dili gyud ka maayo… depende sa style, bisag sa Japanese naa sila’y theater nga lalaki gyud ang mu act... mu act sad sila as babaye, dili man gani sila bayot…” he explained. His stand on art tore down the distinction of man and woman. As an artist he paved way the differences and sexes and believed that art is a passion and it is in everyone. “Dili nimo ma define ang artistry sa gender” he shared. Respectfully I looked upon of his views and opinions, yes, a different man is he. His views are as wide and as free as a panoramic view of the cityscape. BELIEF Men can do that is distinctly innate? “ang lalaki ra mang-ihi ug nag barog” Budoy laughs. When men have the “call of nature” he stands and sets it out, unlikely to the women ways. His smiles are like droplets of light that brightens his image, never thought how deep he is. Art is not what you see, but what you make other see. His beliefs may be mediate but what made man like him outstand are his beliefs and his ideas, his stand for the issues of gender, and his respect to nature and to art. In the cold wind he genuinely converse his experiences and his advocacyt. As a man, he contemplated how valuable his beliefs are and him being an artist he molded a new way of life. “Respect gyud ang akoa, kung tinuod ka nga artist dili ka mo follow sa na-uso, unsa imo gibuhaton, ang importante wala kay nasakitan, Respect.

Wala koy e-compare, di man mu matter tingali, murag dili naman sigro importante ang distinction kung male or female ba sa arts.

“Ang lalaki karun pwede na mahimong babaye” he surprisingly answered when asked about his thoughts about men. Errol “Budoy” Mirabiles is a musician, songwriter, TV host and a recognized artist. Budoy as he is well known is easily recognizable among other artists because of his character, his upmost respect and beliefs, and his valued talents in music and visual arts.

should a guy always pay for a date? well i guess it depends on the scenario, i mean if you were to look at the changing role of woman in modern society compared to older times, woman have started feminist movements and are constantly lobbying for there rights, as the modern age shifts from industrial to service based work the role of the muscular man to make a living has gone, and a woman can equally make as much as a man, under these circumstances the woman should perhaps at least try to chip in so to speak.

The first Gastropub in Cebu and a contemporary oasis that serves to fill your days, your nights, and your stomach By: Michiko Nina Gandionco

Amidst the metropolis that is Cebu City, one place stands out—Irie Gastropubliko, the first Gastropub in Cebu and a contemporary oasis that serves to fill your days, your nights, your stomach (andmaybe even your liver). Whether you’re in for a quick tasty meal or a long chill drinking session, Irie does not disappoint. The word Irie itself means “positive emotions and peaceful vibrations, to be at total peace with your current state of being.” A Gastropub, serves both food and drinks but with a different, innovative angle. If you’re from a more “advanced” age group, you’ll remember Irie back in 2004 to be an Asian fusion lounge along Talamban. Becausethe area itself was already far for most people, soon enough, development started to rampage along the area, traffic became inevitable, parking spots got harder to find, and after two years, the original Irie closed down. Around the same time, Jan Rodriguez (executive chef of Irie) opened up the well loved,Ila Puti—a soulful restaurant which then took over the original Asian fusion food concept for Irie. Since then, Jan has been hoping to revive Irie, planning out every little detail of his business venture, right down to the location— he knew what he wanted, how to achieve it, where to establish it, and thus we have Irie Gastropubliko today. Irie is designed to be a simple, comfortable yet stylish Gastropub, with nearly matte black everything, gold and silver accents, and a soft warm lighting (to add focus to the food or drinks on the table). The walls of windows in Irie open up late at night, to mesh the interior with the exterior to truly make it a place for the public.Other than the architectural design of the pub, what also adds to the blissful atmosphere is the music, courtesy of the Onozawa brothers(Ken, Kaz and Koh) and their impeccable tastes in music. Expect a lot of Indie, variations of House music, and the occasional Dubstep while in Irie. While the design gives the impression of it being a pricey place, take note of the size of the dishes, the quality and taste, the quick and delightful service, the comforting ambience, everything else in Irie, add that all up and for sure your wallet wouldn’t mind more visits. As a pub, of course, Beer is assured. Though aside from that, their cocktails and mixed drinksare signature drinks only available at Irie. All mixed drinks are strong, made with fresh juices and top-

shelf liquor (and for future reference, Wednesdays are Ladies Night!)From afar, Irie simply looks like a drinking place, but while they do have a pretty wide drink selection and well-stocked bar, most people go in for the food. The menu in Irie may seem short and simple, but what they may lack in choices, they make up for with f lavor. When it comes to food, they do not skimp on ingredients. Every dish on the menu is an Irie recipe, made with only the best and natural selections. The only difficulty customers will find on the menu is which dish to eat first. Food-wise, the main attraction is the filling and f lavorful burgers—a 1/3 pound US Sirloin beef patty in between a Brioche bun. Now, why such a fancy bun for a burger? Jan shares with us that “the bun is like a sponge, and it’s basically just a vessel to carry the patty” and while other burgers load up on bread, Irie makes sure that you get a full taste of the meat, which is really what makes a burger, a burger. With a “personalize it” option, Irie’s burgers will never get dull. Feeling spicy? Add some chili or jalapenos! In the mood for a different kind of cheese? Mozzarella or Gruyere, take your pick. Oh, it’s your cheat day? Add some bacon. Not on a diet? Add some bacon. Are you human? Add some more bacon. Aside from the burger, the chicken wings are also a big hit and come in three different f lavors you can choose from: Buffalo, Jamaican Jerk, and House Barbecue (the chef’s personal favorite!) The fall-off-the-bone, baked then grilled Rack of Ribs only cost—wait for it—350 pesos. Irie’s Truff le pasta is made with organic and different kinds of mushrooms, and of course, truff les. Vegetarian? Dieter? Irie’s got you covered. The French Onion soup and Tomato soup are homemade, all natural, without beef or chicken stock. As for dieters, have no fear, for salads are here! With your choice between the classic Caesar salad and the more upscale Smoked Salmon Salad, at the best price with an even better quality. Everything in Irie is homemade, and pretty soon, even the ketchup. And to keep things even more interesting, Irie will be having monthly specials, so that’s definitely something to look forward to. Have you ever noticed that Irie doesn’t have a sign up yet? Jan says, “I intentionally planned that. I want it to be a place to be discovered.” Irie is many things: it’s the hangout place where you and your friends meet so you can catch up on old times, it’s the restaurant you go to when you’re in need of a homemade food fix, it’s the pub you and your coworkers like to relax at after a shift, for whatever reason, Irie is the place to be and is definitely here to stay.

Menswear has always fascinated me, maybe because there’s a multifaceted line between tyle and masculinity. The silhouettes are harper, structured and more complexed. Its has always been a challenge for fashion tastemakers to create something not only relates to men but can be functional as well and for a guy to be style worthy, its a big thing, balancng out aesthetic consciousness and machismo on the side. This 23 year old style maven got most of his fashion inf luences from skateboarding. He believes that skateboarding isn’t just a pastime by kids who listen to heavy metal or omething to look cool with, for him it’s more han a lifestyle, its a culture. You often see him donning plaids, chambrays, gray jeans and his trusty sneaks, all those look inspirations ome from his love of skateboarding. Words by: Yoanna James Shell was excited to launch in Cebu last August 3, Friday at the Ayala Center, its latest generation of premium performance fuels – Shell V-Power Nitro+ Gasoline, Shell V-Power Nitro+ Racing, and Shell V-Power Nitro+ Diesel. Formulated to help improve engine performance and deliver more power and responsiveness, these fuels will directly replace the Shell V-Power fuels and Shell Super Premium still at the same price. “We have around 120 passionate fuel scientists and specialists across the globe working on fuels innovation, development and implementation to met the evolving needs of customers and their cars, “ says Mae Ascan, Fuel Scientist from Shell Global Solutions. “At Shell, the development of fuel technology is an ongoing process. Shell V-Power Nitro+ is the latest example of this; the next step in the Shell V-Power performance fuel technology story." she said. Over the years, car engines have evolved, as have the customers’ needs. Shell V-Power Nitro+ fuels are formulated to act instantly when they hit engine and to help control and eliminate the build-up of deposits for a better performance and engine power. Shell also introduced its most advanced fuel economy and standard fuels – Shell FuelSave Unleaded and Shell FuelSave Diesel which will replace Shell Super Unleaded and Shell Diesoline Ultra respectively. “In a time when people have become more conscious of fuel costs and energy 230- BLANC MAGAZINE - THE MEN ISSUE

conservation, petroleum companies are increasingly being challenged to adopt and respond to the various needs of motorists. Shell FuelSave is one way Shell helps the Philippine motorists get more out of their fuel.” says Arlene Manalo, Shell Marketing Advisor for Asia. With Shell’s endeavor to help costconscious motorists improve their fuel economy, it also launched Target One Million. This is to help one million motorists across the world learn how to save fuel. They developed a series of interactive, online mini-games for people to complete at www.shell.com. ph/targetonemillion. These games have been created to give the motorists an idea that choosing the right choice of fuel and good driving habits can help them reduce fuel consumption and their fuel costs.

“All fuels are not the same. Your fuel economy can be improved through a combination of good driving habits and using the right fuel. When combined with the Shell FuelSave Tips, Shell fuels with Fuel Economy Formula (such as Shell FuelSave) can help you reduce your consumption and fuel costs by helping you get more out of every tank,” Manalo said.
