InfoComm Asia Show Guide - Day 1

Asia Pacific AV emerges in Bangkok

PREVIOUSLY REFERRED TO AS an emerging market by most professional AV manufacturers, sales in the Asia Pacific region are leading the way in terms of growth and technological adoption. According to AVIXA’s 2024 IOTA Industry Overview, the global pro AV market is projected to reach US$325 billion in 2024, up from last year’s US$306.4 billion. This increase is primarily being driven by continued technological innovations, a growing demand for remote collaboration solutions and their integration into the education, corporate and entertainment sectors.

The integration of AV technology in business operations requiring enhanced communication and

productivity has been cited as a major driver. The rise in remote working and e-learning practices, especially post-pandemic, has further catalysed market growth. A walk through the three show floors of the QSNCC here in Bangkok confirms that the technologies employed for these practices are hardly a trend – they are here to stay.

Advancements in video technologies and immersive audio systems together with innovations in wireless technology and IoT integration are enabling increasing numbers of sophisticated and user-friendly AV solutions. Other trends driving the sales of advanced AV solutions include a rising demand for personalised and interactive

user experiences in addition to the integration of AI and machine learning for predictive analytics and enhanced user engagement.

Once again, AV professionals are uniting in Bangkok to celebrate the strengths of the immense Asia Pacific market. The significant improvements and technological adoptions witnessed in recent years owe as much to the ambition of the designers and users as the technological advancements that have taken place. In addition to the products and solutions displayed on the exhibition floor, the numerous summits, seminars, workshops and demonstrations will demand organised scheduling over the course of the three days.

on the block, Gaia, has adopted Sennheiser’s TeamConnect Ceiling 2 (TCC 2) microphone to improve the user experience for staff and students in the auditorium. The supplier, systems integrator and client were tasked to create an advanced hybrid teaching facility to enhance interactions between onsite and online participants. Nanyang Business School (NBS) is housed in Gaia and with the building design conceptualised before Covid-19, adapting to the post-pandemic world’s needs, accommodating a hybrid teaching format was imperative in transforming the way the school operates.

Creating hybrid AV systems

NTU facilities manager, Joe Chan, spearheaded a mission to convert and upgrade the teaching technologies with hybrid AV systems. By combining face-to-face classes with remote learning from students joining off-campus, the classroom required seamless communication between the instructor and students. In addition to making high-quality audio and video, the hybrid solution demanded speech clarity for both the instructor and the students participating in the session.

online participants,” explains Chan. The goal was for instructors and students to communicate in a hybrid setting where classes are conducted with a group of participants attending the classes remotely.

In early 2023, NBS invited key suppliers and installers to propose a design for a hybrid AV system for the Gaia auditorium. “We required an AV solution in the main 190-seat auditorium that would enable interactive teaching and exchange between onsite and

New interactive teaching solutions

“The over-reliance on physical microphones in a classroom setting has been a challenge due to their lack of flexibility,” explains Eileen Goh, general manager of AV solutions provider, AV Media.

“This also affects the rhythm of teaching, and the audio is sometimes compromised.” To mitigate this shortcoming, AV Media recommended Sennheiser’s TCC 2 microphones as an answer. The new solution introduces an interactive teaching mode using ceiling microphones and smart cameras, presenting a better audio and visual experience for participants. Comprising 28 electret condenser capsules, each Sennheiser TCC 2 ceiling microphone array is networked within a QSC Q-SYS ecosystem. Following two months

by Sennheiser together with the team from AV Media, a total of 12 TCC 2s have been installed in the Gaia auditorium. Two of the TCC 2s serve as the pickup of the entire 7.7m x 3.3m (WxD) stage, and another 10 cover the 11.7m x 17.6m (WxD) steeped seated area. The microphone and speaker status of the 32 digital audio channels is monitored, processed, transmitted and controlled by a Q-SYS Core 110f processor via the Dante protocol.

Planning design and application

Good planning was key to the project. “In the early stages, the team created detailed designs and ran simulations for the location, varying the quantity of microphones and speakers, and then further adjusted them according to actual application requirements,” explains Sennheiser business development manager, Spring Chong. “The initial design comprised 18 TCC 2s installed in the auditorium but, following a detailed analysis, this was reduced to 12. “Each TCC 2 microphone has a separate channel, so we adjusted the parameters according to the characteristics within the room and added an algorithm to carry out auto-mixing based on the pickup zones and speaker coverage,” he added.

The varying ceiling height ranging from 8.9m at the front of the auditorium to 4.5m at the rear posed a major design challenge to both AV Media and Sennheiser. The gradual 4.4m reduction in ceiling height

L–R: Lai Kiang Why, David Tan, Eileen Goh, Joe Chan, Spring Chong, Alex Chew and Phang Su Hui

over the 17.6m length between the TCC 2 units and the seats below was intricately programmed. “By adopting Sennheiser’s TruVoicelift and automatic dynamic beamforming technology, the varying levels were optimised,” furthers AV Media’s David Tan. “The noise gate function with the TruVoicelift algorithm blocks out undesired sounds such as air conditioning, operating projectors, opening doors and chair movements. With TCC 2, no matter where I speak, my voice can be picked up and conveyed clearly and intelligibly to everyone,” he added.

AI user experience

Panasonic’s SFA100W auto-tracking software combined with the Q-SYS PTZ camera system tracks the

the seated participants. The highprecision auto-tracking operating device within the Panasonic remote camera features Motion Detection and Face Recognition. This not only allows speakers and instructors to move freely in the room as they speak but also conveys students’ questions and answers clearly to everyone in the auditorium. In addition, participants joining in remotely are kept engaged with the contents, discussions and interactions onsite.

In addition to preventing feedback, TCC 2’s TruVoicelift function uses an advanced frequency shifter algorithm, which can automatically target the speaker, adding a few extra dB of gain while blocking noise in other areas to improve the clarity of speech and allowing the audience to hear better. TruVoicelift is used to ensure that the

person speaking via a microphone is clearly heard throughout the session, regardless of the speaker’s location within the auditorium. The primary objective is to bridge the sound level loss over the distance between the speaker and the listener.

“Additionally, designated areas within the room can be set as priority zones where audio is predominantly picked up, prioritising the speaker over any others who are talking in the room,” adds Chong. “This can be useful for covering the podium area in a classroom environment. Furthermore, different instructors desire different types of voice reinforcement. Some prefer to be slightly amplified, whereas others want to be heard at a more natural level. Therefore, profiles can be tailored to a specific purpose or environment.”

Moving forward with technology

A wireless tablet loaded with the Sennheiser Control Cockpit software provides system control and maintenance of the TCC 2 system. Depicting all status information on a single GUI, adjustments can be made very easily. “The audio quality is not only intelligible, but it also sounds natural without any hint of amplification,” concludes Chan. “As we roll out the TCC 2 technology to smaller teaching facilities on the campus, we can continue to reap the benefits of Sennheiser’s TeamConnect system.”

QUESTIONS & ANSWERS

Q&

What are the trends currently shaping the pro AV industry?

Nowadays, everyone is talking about connectivity – everyone wants to be connected in terms of the systems they use – and cloud connectivity is an emerging trend. Systems integrators also want to be connected so they can remotely manage the AV systems they are installing.

How is Powersoft addressing these trends?

MyUniverso is a cloud server that is connected to the amplifier 24/7. Also our Unica low power fourand eight-channel models and our Verso Gateway bring our entire product line-up onto the cloud.

What will you be highlighting on your booth this year?

We will showing our maritime kit for Unica which is compliant to all standards required for cruise ships along with all our other products that highlight our commitment to efficiency and sustainability. Why did you decide to exhibit this year?

We had a great show last year and met lots of overseas visitors from Vietnam, the Philippines and Indonesia and we want to continue engaging with these high-quality visitors again this year. APAC is a growing region so we hope that we will be able to engage with more clients again at the show.

What do you like about Bangkok?

The food is amazing – the people are very friendly – it’s the land of smiles. It’s a city that everyone enjoys visiting.

What trends are shaping the future of the pro AV industry?

We are seeing more demand for immersive experiences due to the increase in leisure travel – for example, we are getting more enquiries coming from tourist attractions such as art and history museums, airports, train stations and entertainment venues. There has also been an increase in corporations trying to encourage more customers into their experience centres. These venues can provide a wide variety of solutions, from simple, budget-friendly setups all the way up to high-end, interactive, RGB laser-based technologies.

What key products is Christie developing to meet these demands?

We’re in a very fortunate position in that we’ve always been at the forefront of immersive solutions. We can provide a wide range of solutions, starting with our powerful Pandoras Box media server that can drive highlevel graphics that can be blended onto any surface and delivered by our projection systems or combined with our display systems. We can satisfy any customer requirements, whether it’s a budget-friendly solution or a sophisticated, integrated setup. We also have our Terra AV-over-IP transmitter and receiver that can deliver content onto display devices at very high speed without losing any signal. Plus our intelligent cameras can compensate for the colour of the wall if it’s off-white. So we have simple solutions with free software on our projectors and we recognise the fact that there’s a wide range of requirements in the immersive market. But if customers have the budget and want more of a wow factor, we have our RGB laser projectors that can produce Rec. 2020 colour space which, coupled with Pandoras Box, can deliver a fully interactive and impressive solution.

What solutions is Christie showcasing at InfoComm Asia this year?

Our interactive “cave” will feature our 4K13-HS projectors with BoldColor+ that can produce high colour saturation. We are bringing a 3D temple from China to showcase our strength in projection mapping technology. The contents will be delivered by our Pandoras Box that can map content onto a complicated 800,000 surface that has been 3D printed for this event. We’ll also be using our Mystique auto alignment software to show customers how we can auto-align complicated projections in a matter of minutes rather than hours. In the high brightness arena, we are showcasing our Griffin 4K50-RGB laser projectors that can achieve Rec. 2020 colour space. We’re also launching our new 1DLP projector that is using the latest TI chips. Last but least, we are showing our high-end, versatile micro LED products as well as our budgetfriendly Core Series III LED videowalls. We are celebrating our 95th anniversary which is testament to how well Christie has done in the market and we want to thank all our customers for their support.

Where is the projection market heading?

There are different technologies that are available, it just depends on what the customer’s requirements are. For example, it’s still not possible to do cost-effective projection mapping with LEDs, so in that kind of space, projectors still provide the best solution. There’s room still for projection and LEDs/LCDs but it depends on how the setup is designed and put together. We’re even seeing immersive spaces where there is a combination of projectors and LEDs.

Today’s control rooms bring content to the operator like never before. It is not uncommon for information sources to be in the hundreds – with camera feeds, websites, satellite TV and bespoke software all requiring real-time monitoring and control for smooth operations and swift decision-making in times of crisis.

It is typical for control room operators to be assigned responsibility for a specific task in the organisation – monitoring drilling procedures on an off-shore oil platform, for example – where operators need all relevant data and information on “their area”, as well as an overview of information related to the running of the wider operation on a shared videowall.

It is here that Datapath brings an offering unique to the market, with a solution that empowers operators to have their own “personal videowall” at their workstation. Operators can easily populate their displays with any content available in the control room for monitoring and

instantly send content from their local workstation to any connected videowall.

What emerging trend do you think is the most exciting and why?

I think one of the most recent trends is incorporating AI in AV. And we are not talking about simply putting in algorithms to automate certain functions in the machines, but programming systems that one day will be able to learn and adapt to users to dynamically improve the users’ experiences. This includes methods such as data analysis and real-time adaptation, for example. This concept, although still in the early stages of development or implementation, is expected to improve efficiency and productivity of organisations.

Besides projectors, media and show control systems such as the Christie Pandoras Box play a crucial role in themed entertainment as a real-time video playback and processing system. It allows for seamless integration of various multimedia elements, creating cohesive and captivating shows. With its robust features, Pandoras Box enables designers to craft unique and interactive experiences that keep audiences engaged. Christie Mystique, an automated camera-based alignment and recalibration solution, simplifies the setup and maintenance of complex projection systems. This technology is particularly useful in themed entertainment venues where rides and attractions may require frequent

updates and adjustments. Mystique ensures that the visual alignment remains perfect, providing a flawless viewing experience for visitors.

Transforming exhibition spaces

Museums are increasingly adopting immersive technologies to enhance their exhibits and provide visitors with interactive learning experiences. Projection systems and direct-view LED videowalls can transform ordinary spaces into immersive environments where history, art and science come to life. Whether it’s a large-scale projection mapping on museum façades or detailed LED displays inside galleries, Christie’s solutions ensure clarity and precision.

Christie’s LED videowall solutions are perfect for indoor applications like museum spaces. From awardwinning premium options such as MicroTiles LED for critical viewing to the budget-friendly, versatile Core Series III, these LED options are ideal for engaging and entertaining customers with spectacular images.

Creating an impactful impression

In the corporate world, creating immersive environments can significantly enhance presentations, meetings and events. Christie’s full range of laser projectors deliver crisp and clear visuals that make corporate interactions more impactful. These projectors are ideal for large auditoriums, conference rooms and training facilities, where high brightness and reliability are essential.

The Christie Terra SDVoE solution facilitates AV-over-IP systems, allowing for seamless content transport, processing and control

over 10G Ethernet networks. This technology supports the distribution of superior video and audio signals across large corporate campuses, ensuring that every presentation is delivered with the utmost clarity and precision.

Elevating learning journeys

Educational institutions are increasingly leveraging immersive

technologies to create engaging learning environments. VR laboratories, interactive classrooms and digital libraries are just a few examples where AV solutions can make a significant impact. Christie’s laser projectors and integrated solutions such as Widget Designer and AirScan enable the creation of virtual environments where students can interact with content in a more meaningful way.

QUESTIONS & ANSWERS

Q&

What trends are currently shaping the pro AV industry?

From a market standpoint, meeting spaces are changing and these changes are here to stay. Today, the meeting space is more fluid and more hybrid but, as we evolve and meet these needs, how can we also ensure we are providing meeting equity? From the end user perspective, customers want to have greater visibility and control. With more and more equipment being enlisted, we need to make sure our products are seamless and easy to use so that the meeting is successful.

How is Shure addressing these trends?

Over the past year, Shure has developed a variety of new options for our successful MXA920 ceiling array microphone. We have launched the MXA901 to cater for the different aesthetics of a room and is a smaller, round-shaped version, while the MXA902 with its integrated speaker is suitable for audio conferencing in small and mid-sized rooms. We have also enhanced our IntelliMix software to provide greater security as well as improved echo cancellation and acoustics, which results in a superior meeting experience.

Why should a visitor come to your booth?

We will be holding demonstrations of our MXA microphones where customers will be able to see all three ceiling microphones in action – the MXA920, MXA901 and MXA901. We have been working with different technology partners to incorporate camera tracking into our products so that our end users can be seen and heard equally.

What do you like about Bangkok?

It’s a very affordable venue with eating places and nightlife. I was just looking through a list of top 50 Asian restaurants and nearly half of them were in Bangkok – visitors can also find some of the top Michelin-star restaurants in the city.

What are some of the highlights on your booth this year?

We have designed our booth in such a way that it will be able to demonstrate a lot of the different products that we have. For example, we are going to be demonstrating the new TiMax system, along with Martin Audio, so we will be able to show the tracking of the systems. Additionally, we have LEA Professional doing the Asia launch for its Half-Rack series amplifiers, as well as a few more software updates that we are launching as well. We also have NST Audio which will be showing off its latest products and software. And we have Sonance on board which will showcase on a “live” booth, so visitors will be able to hear some of the audio at low levels, so people can see how the products perform. Additionally, we will have some of the commercial products from HH Electronics and, with Optimal Audio, we are going to be showing off the latest updates on its Zone software, which will be exciting because up until this point it has only done local distribution.

What emerging trend do you think is the most exciting and why?

We are going to be demonstrating two trends on the booth, one of which is immersive solutions. Immersive technology is becoming a big deal – it’s an emerging trend still, but it is becoming bigger and bigger within the region. I have seen more projects and many more enquiries from customers wanting an immersive-type solution. So that is something we are trying to show as much as possible on the booth. For example, we have a full TiMax solution installed in Singapore and we have multiple customers coming through experiencing what TiMax can do. And, of course, the company was one of the first to bring out an immersive solution two decades ago, and they now have many systems around the world.

What are the most pressing challenges being faced in the market and how are you addressing them?

I think that the challenges are changing over time, such as the challenge of a post-Covid-19 world on supply chains and timelines that are all good on one day but out the window the next. Everything is moving around and changing, and just working on tackling that is definitely one of the biggest challenges and everyone is still dealing with that today. But it has been getting a lot better, and businesses are growing quickly around the region in different areas – some markets are hot, some markets are slower, and managing the delivery in each different market at different times will continue to be a challenge that everyone tackles.

Will you be doing any running while you are in Bangkok?

I am hoping to squeeze in a few runs – Bangkok is a nice place to go because there are lots of nice parks. But you have to watch out for the big lizards.

Venue futures

David Claringbold, former director, theatre and events/technical director at Sydney Opera House and chief marketing officer at d&b audiotechnik, examines the different forces that are combining to define a new kind of performance space in today’s changing global environment

AS IMAGES FROM ANCIENT times remind us, the concept of a seating bank facing a performance zone has been with us for thousands of years. However, while many functional principles remain, venue design and use models continue to evolve in response to the way cities are designed, cultural entities operate and our social habits change. And technology is playing a key role.

Cities have experienced dramatic change to their economies due to the continuing work from home and hybrid technology trends. The “war on the couch” – which used to be an exclusively entertainmentcentric consideration – is now a macro economic reality for our urban centres. Governments are sensitive to this and see arts, culture and hospitality as central to increasing the value proposition

engagement programmes and sophisticated technology systems that are intrinsic to enterprise functionality, customer experience and the artistic vision. The future venue will be sustainable, universally accessible, AI-enabled and emotionally intelligent.

So, how will future venues look and what is driving the change?

Arts and culture venues are being influenced by three macro trends in global urban development. First is place definition, with Greater China, India, Africa, the Middle East and Southeast Asia all undergoing the fastest pace of urban development. Meanwhile, place restructuring is seeing established urban centres responding to changed work and living dynamics. Thirdly, societal developments including digitisation, sustainability, diversity and accessibility will have their own profound effects.

of a city as a place to work and visit. Therefore, what was once a fragmented approach to urban design and place making is being reimagined as integrated precincts, where transitions between work and lifestyle are seamless. New civic developments will focus on creating experiences that people can’t get at home or online, by putting art and culture at the centre of their design. In a relatively short space of time, venue models are transitioning from mono economies, with fixed architectures and low technical capability, to being destinations

Together with these global influences, the arts and culture sector is responding to changed audience behaviours and social dynamics that are creating seismic shifts in their identity and purpose. We are already seeing the emergence of programming matrixes such as art galleries presenting music festivals, museums with expansive hospitality offerings and performing arts centres with curated digital channels. All of these are designed to attract customers across a 24/7 cycle, develop business resilience and enhance community relevance –onsite, offsite, online and virtually.

the ability to create bespoke and interactive experiences and allowing the venue manager to dynamically repurpose their offerings, according to the programme and time of day. Venues will utilise technologyenabled storytelling to deepen a person’s relationship with a space, putting human emotional connection at the centre of their content and design thinking to increase customer dwell times and provide opportunities for interactive engagement, all the while capturing data to inform the ongoing curatorial evolution of the customer experience. This will mean the ongoing evolution of venues and cultural organisations from fixed classical modes to contemporary experiential modes. Every room – not just the stages – will be designed with performance capability, and the gap between acoustic design and desired performance modes will continue to widen, requiring variable room configurations and acoustics. Immersive will drive innovation across the sector as experiences become increasingly interactive and user-definable. Hospitality will be curated as a cultural programme and a revenue driver. The role of venue design in arts and culture is to facilitate conversations between people, place and the art, to elevate our consciousness. The venue of the future is a living organism, reflective of its community and the vision of a place. No longer constrained by the constructs of the past, we are headed into a future of vibrant possibility; one where the walls between performance spaces, audiences, surrounding precincts, borders and market verticals become increasingly transparent. Technology will be a key driver of this vision, a platform where content, community and enterprise are intrinsically intertwined. None of this spells the end of live performance and the humanity of creativity and social exchange as we know it. These fundaments have endured over thousands of years, across cultures and continents well before electricity and the internet came to be, and they will endure for many more.
