Welcome to InfoComm Asia

INFOCOMM ASIA 2023 RETURNS

once again to Bangkok, but this time in the newly constructed Queen Sirikit National Convention Center (QSNCC). Featuring more than 40 first-time exhibitors and a 38% larger show floor filled with the latest AV technology launches and solutions, the show also expands its geographical reach with a new title of InfoComm Asia, reflecting its increasingly important role in providing a platform for global manufacturers interested in developing a strong presence in the

Asia-Pacific market. In a world undergoing major disruptions due to geopolitical and economic challenges, Asia shines as a bright spot within the global economy. The Gross Domestic Product (GDP) in Asia is currently worth US$41.78 trillion, accounting for 35% of the world’s GDP. By 2040, Asia’s GDP is expected to rise to around 42% of the world’s GDP, underpinned by the economic expansion of ASEAN, mainland China and India. At this year’s show, attendees will also find more industry and tech-focused learning

sessions than ever with the InfoComm Asia Summit, the pre-eminent educational platform for everything AV, plus the NIXT Summit providing a peak into how industries are engaging the power of emerging tech to secure their future. In 2023, delegates will have access to some 35 free-to-attend sessions delivered by experts, and industry leaders also have the opportunity to join the popular AV Technical Tour to see in-person digital signage systems installed within the QSNCC.

Will Video Conferencing be Replacing In-Person Meetings in Our Regional Business Conduct Post-Covid Era?

Video conferencing has been part of our daily lives since hunkering down during the pandemic. The Mega Trend of the Workplace, Hybrid Meeting

The pandemic reshaped our way of working. Although many people came back to the office after the pandemic, meetings at the workplace are not the same as before. Now people are attending meetings from anywhere on any device. So, it became crucial to help these people communicate with one another more efficiently than ever and that is the core of the hybrid meeting. This session will present the latest meeting trends, the best solutions to support these meetings and the successful cases of the companies that have stepped on this mega trend.

Jesse Chung, director (CTS, PMP), Jushin AVT Corp, South Korea

1200–1300

How to Maximise the Potential of the Microphone

Video conferencing is one of the fastest-growing markets. However, audio is the core of video conferencing. The issues that are bothering people the most are not normally from the video end, with issues such as feedback, echo, residual echo, double talk and reflections in the room causing the biggest problems. This session will touch on the following four points:

1. How to eliminate the feedback?

2. How to improve intelligibility with microphones processing?

3. How to improve the double talk performance?

4. What does AEC do in a meeting room?

Kane Zhang, CTS-D, vice president and CTO, EZpro International Technology Limited

1400–1450 Manageability in AV

AV and UCC systems directly impact customers’ workflow and business operations. To that end, customers seek SLA-driven support and definite uptime. This, however, is more easily demanded than supported – AV deployments continue to be complicated, challenging and made up of different (most of the times proprietary) technologies and products. The ability to monitor, manage and control large-scale AV deployments comes out as the #1 problem most solutions providers/systems integrator are dealing with today. In this session, we will talk about manageability, what it is today and what we expect will happen tomorrow.

Mradul Sharma, managing director, 3 CDN Workplace, India

1500–1630

AVL and Acoustics in Performing Arts Centres and Modern Houses of Worship: The Same but Different

It is common to find a setup so elaborate in today’s modern houses of worship that it blurs the lines between these types of installations and those found in performing arts centres. So where do the similarities end and what are the distinct differences that clearly draw the line between the two? This session looks at the right design solutions for audio, video, stage lighting and acoustics for each respective client.

SUMMIT SCHEDULE 08 | InfoComm Asia

Bringing benefits to control room operators

operators to display

see them

OVER THE PAST DECADE, DATAPATH HAS charted a new course towards AV-over-IP control technologies and solutions for creative multi-display videowalls, small- to medium-scale videowalls in business environments and command and control rooms of any scale. “The purpose of a control room is to draw together critical, paramount information that will allow operators to make key decisions,” explains Datapath CTO, John Storey. “Most of the information is visual in nature, ranging from fine details such as texts, spreadsheets and dashboards to big, overarching control applications with SCADA industrial control on a huge wall where the big picture can be monitored.”

Today, it is not uncommon for an operator to possess several 4K monitors, adding up to a similar pixel density as a large wall. With such a personal videowall, the operator will be more interested in the detail and the clarity of information because they are interacting with that media. Due to viewing distance, walls tend to be HD in resolution and the operator workstations are often 4K. Today, the size of the wall is more important than the actual resolution, so the trend has taken us from cubes to LCD panels and onto direct view LEDs, which are essentially a sea of pixels allowing for bezel-free, flexible displays containing the most essential sources.

Along with this capability, Datapath’s Aetria Workstation provides a “bespoke” videowall ability to operators, allowing them to display whatever sources they need, however they wish to see them. This means that operators can focus on their specific task with only their relevant information, and can share any content on the larger videowall when necessary (user rights permitting, of course).

Offering connectivity of content viewing, sharing and control, the Aetria Workstation solution can be scaled to operator requirements and connectivity preferences. Individual desktops can be partitioned into dedicated zones with the creation of a personal videowall for controlling any combination of sources available in Aetria alongside local applications. Screen layouts can be easily saved, accessed and shared with other operators.

Aetria draws all the elements of control room design, management, control and monitoring into a single interface. As a result, systems integrators and operators can design scalable, bespoke systems that include connectivity, videowalls, workstations and source management. The manufacturer has aimed to address the key requirements for current and future control rooms, including rooms spread across distributed sites, the increasing growth of data and rising demand of IP content together with 4K

a snapshot of how an installation will operate, allowing any changes to be made before impacting onsite. of templates and layouts. Preconfigured layouts can be deployed to videowalls and made available for workstations. Adjustments and updates of any content can be made remotely in real time with full access protocols. The Aetria package includes Aligo and Arqa, the former being an AVoIP solution that can transmit video over different networks in different resolutions

simultaneously, offering 4K content across a 10Gb network and simultaneous compressed streams on 1Gb. An HD version of a video can be shared, in real time, over a low-bandwidth network, while the quality of a 4K original can be viewed in UHD with no compromise. Meanwhile, Arqa is a KVM control room system that runs on a 1Gb network, providing access to multiple remote sources from a single workspace, without sacrificing video quality or round-trip latency, and can operate harmoniously alongside Aligo where larger project requirements dictate.

The manufacturer believes Aetria is a complex solution that cannot be ordered as a plug-and-play, one-size-fits-all product as there are many variables in number of sources, processor and hardware requirements, operator duties and quantity and location of displays. For each client, Datapath will discuss project requirements with their customers before drawing up suggested plans for what is very often a unique solution. The company also provides a popular “by your side” commissioning service option for peace of mind.

As a manufacturer of its own hardware and software, Datapath aims to ensure a seamless buying process. “As a full stack developer, Datapath specialist engineers develop circuit boards with programmable logic controllers, while other engineers dedicate their skills towards firmware, driver development and full applications,” continues Storey. “Datapath offers unique products because we are in control of that entire stack and handle a huge bandwidth. We are not just putting software icing onto the top of something quite plain as we have built up a large team that can bake the entire cake.”

Video over the network –AV-over-IP or IPTV?

WITH MORE ORGANISATIONS ADOPTING IP-BASED solutions to handle video distribution, there is often confusion about the difference between AV-over-IP (AVoIP) and IPTV technologies. This is perhaps not surprising given that both are IP-based video technologies with the primary goal of distributing a video signal over a network to enable playback, be that external television streams, internal video streams, digital signage content or other sources. Much has been said about the capabilities of AV-over-IP as an emerging option in recent years, while IPTV is a more established technology within the marketplace. There are, however, distinctions in the way the two technologies operate, which leads to variations in the potential costs involved in an installation, as well as the functionality available to end users. So, what are the key differences between AV-over-IP and IPTV, and what type of applications is each technology best suited to? What considerations should an integrator have in mind when specifying a system?

Network and bit rates

The network is the foundation of both systems, and so the first aspect to consider is the network to be used. An IPTV signal uses roughly between 3Mbps and 15Mbps of bandwidth for a video – an HD stream uses approximately 3–6Mbps, while a 4K stream could be in the region of roughly 15Mbps or more. With AV-over-IP signals, this is more likely to be measured in gigabits per second (Gbps); placing significantly more burden on the network. For an HD signal, it could be in the region of 800Mbps – 1Gbps, whereas for a 4K signal it could be up to 6Gbps or more.

an existing network and require additional network infrastructure investment from the start, while IPTV systems can generally run on an existing network.

Compression

To counter network overwhelm, IPTV reduces the size of video with high levels of compression. The misnomer is that with high compression you get less quality, but many are surprised to learn that there is so much information in a digital video stream that it can maintain very high

to broadcast for high-quality viewing. In many instances there is a negligible visible impact, especially given recent advancements in compression. AV-over-IP employs very little compression, or none in some cases, which ensures a high-quality signal, but this also explains why the bit rate is so high.

Playback

IPTV uses ISO industry standard formats – such as MPEG-1, MPEG-2, MPEG-4/H.264 and HEVC – and playback is possible on TVs, computers and mobile devices. AV-over-IP devices can only play on a TV set, requiring a proprietary hardware decoder with an HDMI out into a TV. By using these industry standards, IPTV also allows the mixing and matching of products together. It’s possible to use a different manufacturer’s encoder in an IPTV system, for example, which can give integrators more flexibility. As AVoIP is proprietary, there is a tendency to be locked into a specific manufacturer, which could cause additional issues when looking to scale up a system.

Latency

AVoIP is known for having excellent low latency. It is essentially real time from encoder to decoder. With no compression, no heavy calculations must be made by the encoder and the decoder. There are some projects – such as a surgical application or competitive esports gaming –where this extremely low latency is vital to ensure exacting movements are timed with the image. Many applications, however, suffer no issues with the minimal latency (~350ms) introduced by compression in an IPTV system. There are also IPTV solutions – and VITEC has one – which delivers sub-frame latency, glass-to-glass real time, with very minimal delay.

Functionality

If recording video is a requirement for the project, IPTV solutions will record in a native format. With AVoIP, a third-party product is required to achieve this functionality.

If a facility wants to take in entertainment channels from the likes of Comcast, Spectrum, Direct TV and so on, those feeds are already compressed in industrystandard formats. An IPTV solution can take these feeds as they are and distribute them; all it takes is a gateway to receive and send the video out over a network. With AVoIP, a set-top box is needed that sends HDMI to an encoder in every case. All sources need to be re-encoded.

If a company wants to reach out to remote sites over the internet (via WAN streaming), this is not possible with AV-over-IP. With IPTV, as an industry standard supporting low bit rates, it’s very simple to stream to remote sites or mobile devices.

Summary

Before specifying an AV-over-IP solution, which can involve significant expenditure, planning and infrastructure upgrades, it is worth looking to see if an IPTV system can fulfil the use case required. Effective IPTV solutions have been implemented in many verticals, including corporate, healthcare, transportation, education, hospitality and sports venues.

There are some scenarios where a zero latency/low compression solution is critical and, in such cases, an AV-over-IP solution is likely the best option. However, the

additional benefits such as “time-shifting”, which allows the ability to pause streams on an individual device without pausing them across the entire network. IPTV offers further options to deliver an enhanced, customised experience for both management and end users, with the ability to stream to various devices, including computer desktops, mobile devices, set-top boxes and directly to SmartTVs.

existing IP network likely capable of handling streams, instead of requiring significant network upgrades. Choosing an experienced integrator partner with understanding of the respective technologies will help to deliver the right technology for the application at hand.

What’s changed in the last six months since InfoComm SEA in November?

In the days leading up to InfoComm SEA in November, we had invited all our APAC distributors to our AUDAC APAC distributor days in Bangkok. Not only did we have lots to share, but our distributors did as well. Seeing what our distributors had got in store for the next few years was extremely inspiring. And we are already seeing the results in the regions, with everything taking a positive turn.

What are your expectations now this has evolved into an Asia-focused show?

We hope to welcome more visitors from outside the Southeast Asia region. Asia is a diverse and rapidly growing market, and an Asia-focused show can provide a platform for companies to showcase their products and services to a wider audience. Who knows, InfoComm Asia may then become what ISE is to the European region.

Sebastian Chong, AUDAC Booth J21

Why does Bangkok work well as a hub for this exhibition?

There are several reasons why Bangkok is the perfect choice to be the hub for an Asian tradeshow. Strategic location: Bangkok is located in the centre of Southeast Asia, making it easily accessible from other major cities in the region. It is also wellconnected by air, with direct flights to major cities around the world, making it a convenient destination for international attendees. Infrastructure: Bangkok has a modern infrastructure with world-class exhibition centres, hotels and transportation facilities. The city is well-equipped to handle large-scale events. But it’s also about the cultural attractions. Bangkok is a vibrant city with a rich cultural heritage, offering a range of attractions and experiences for visitors. This makes it an ideal destination for attendees looking to combine business with pleasure.

What’s the focus on your booth for this year’s show?

We are launching the biggest project in the brand’s long history. At InfoComm, visitors can discover a completely new product family called Atellio focused on networked sound. The new product family consists–– of four major pillars: the Luna series audio matrix processors, the NCP series networked control panels, the NWP series networked wall panels and the NPM series networked paging microphones.

Why should a visitor come to your booth?

Obviously to come and discover the Atellio product family. Visitors will be amazed at all the functionalities we have managed to put into these products and how they can be used in a wide range of projects. We will also have live listening sessions of different loudspeakers on the stand where we hope visitors will be blown away by our sound quality.

Muhammad Farhan Pulroh, Bose Professional Booth F13

Where are we going now – is it in-person or virtual?

It’s going to be a mix – it’s going to be hybrid. And the good thing is that we’re working with partners like Lenovo and Barco to create hybrid solutions. For example, with our Videobar VB1 we’re working with technology partners so that the solution covers all the different aspects that the customer needs in a meeting room space. We are Microsoft Teams and Zoom certified for both Videobars VB1 and VB-S, and we want so show our customers that we don’t just offer the Bose Professional ecosystem – we want them to know that we are flexible and that we can integrate with other brands.

Why should a visitor come to your booth this year?

I think this year there’s going to be a lot more focus on hybrid solutions and we have some products in this area we want to highlight at the show. Not forgetting our bread-and-butter products in installed sound of course, as we have some new amplifiers and software that will be on display. It’s going to be much more interactive and we’re going to engage more with our customers with dedicated meeting spaces. There’s definitely exciting times coming soon.

What are the current trends in the industry?

I think it’s a mixed bag at the moment for all the

verticals, such as education, hybrid meetings and the commercial sector. But we’ve noticed that government, the police force and even the prisons are actually investing more in videoconferencing so they can stay in touch with people without having to physically see them. It’s a different ball game now –everyone is looking into camera technology.

What aspects of Bangkok do you like the most?

I like the food – the Thai food in Singapore is good but if you eat in Thailand, it’s really different and more spicy. The people are really friendly and I also like the culture.

What’s changed in the last six months since InfoComm SEA in November?

It’s amazing how fast our industry moves and the past six months since InfoComm SEA is no exception. Firstly, the world was only just starting to recover from the Covid-19 pandemic back then and business activities were relatively measured; now we are seeing business activities that are comparable to pre-Covid times. Additionally, the supply chain issues that were affecting the industry have mostly improved as the world resumes normal operations. These developments are positive for us and our clients, who can now better plan their budgets for the coming year.

Moreover, there has been an increase in collaboration between different manufacturers, especially as the industry continues to expand in the area of hybrid unified communication and video conferencing solutions. This trend is likely to continue, as companies seek to provide integrated solutions that meet the evolving needs of their customers. Overall, the industry is adapting and innovating in response to the changing business landscape, and we expect to see further advancements and collaborations in the coming months and years.

What are your expectations now this has evolved into an Asia-focused show?

Since the evolution of InfoComm SEA into an Asiafocused show, our expectations are high. We anticipate seeing an increase in hybrid digital workplace technology deployments being adopted in the US/EMEA regions into APAC regions. By expanding the show to cover the hole APAC region, InfoComm will attract a critical mass of participants and attendees to learn about new technologies trends first-hand and explore new business partnerships and collaborations.

Another expectation is that the technology showcased at InfoComm will be more APAC-centric, reflecting the unique complexities of the region. This will enable attendees to gain a stronger understanding of how technology can be adapted and customised to meet the specific needs of the APAC market. We also anticipate that the show will facilitate greater networking opportunities among industry professionals, leading to new business relationships and collaborations. Overall, we are excited about the future of InfoComm as an Asia-

Describe the recent changes that have taken place at Sennheiser?

In March 2022, Sennheiser completed the sale of our consumer division to hearing care specialist Sonova. This allows the company to solely focus on the professional audio business, which is now divided into three different business units. These are professional audio, business communications and Neumann. These three segments all represent great potential for growth and are characterised by different customer groups, product life cycles and market dynamics. We will be presenting our range of business communications solutions in Bangkok at the InfoComm Asia exhibition.

Has Sennheiser enhanced the Business Communications portfolio recently?

We launched the TeamConnect Ceiling Medium (TCC M) at ISE 2023 in Barcelona. This latest ceiling mic solution is tailormade for mid-sized meeting rooms. As the original TCC 2 was engineered or bigger boardrooms up to 80m2 in size, we knew that we had to engineer a version delivering all the features of our award-winning TCC 2 for mid-sized meeting rooms, lecture and collaboration spaces.

Petteri Murto, Sennheiser Booth B07

Coming out of the pandemic, will hybrid

Definitely. The pandemic greatly accelerated the hybrid workplace and made it acceptable. Audio has become an important key driver in the hybrid work environment. It’s no longer all about the video, as the most common questions now relate to audio and being able to hear everyone online. Many people spent multiple hours a day working in hybrid meetings whereby they had to endure poor quality audio. As a result of this, many companies are now investing in good-quality audio solutions. Sennheiser is supporting them by providing crystal clear audio not just in their meeting rooms, but additionally in their hybrid work environments.

Supply chain problems overshadowed the efforts of all manufacturers in 2022. How did Sennheiser fare?

As a manufacturer of its own products, Sennheiser has managed to navigate these supply chain issues better. In doing so, we have maintained a consistent supply of products in a timely fashion to our partners and end users.

How important are strategic partnerships for the business communications unit?

We have maintained an agnostic open protocol and as such we have many industry collaborations with different partners. This gives the end user the freedom to decide which combination they wish to use and that seamless integration of products will create a unique experience for our customers. We are currently working with companies such as Barco, Kramer, QSC and Xilica.

Why should a visitor come to see Sennheiser at InfoComm Asia?

Following the launch of TCC M, we decided to demonstrate the quality of our Sennheiser audio solutions. Being an audio solutions provider, the key element to demonstrate is the audible qualities of our products; therefore, we have created a listening booth in Bangkok.

Is Bangkok a good hub for Asian visitors?

I believe so, especially for those coming from Southeast Asian countries. It is also an interesting place for people to visit because of the nightlife, the history and the cuisine of course.

Eric Ong, Shure Booth A04

How do you feel last year’s InfoComm SEA went?

The last show went really well for us. It was heart-warming to see the crowds coming back, especially as the region is just coming out of the pandemic situation. There’s a good recovery of activities and people are willing to get more engaged, up close and personal which, in general, led to the successful event.

Do we need to be in-person or can we get away with virtual?

It needs to be a combination of both. There’s an increasing change in consumer behaviour – having gone through this pandemic situation, there’s a better understanding of how we can be more efficient when we work in a hybrid setting. But of course, as we exit the pandemic, people want to get more engaged with their stakeholders, and there’s an increasing demand for more activities, events and concerts, especially in our AV industry. I think people in general are enjoying more face-to-face engagement, so I’m anticipating another good turnout at this coming InfoComm event.

What do you feel the visitors to last year’s show were looking for on your booth?

The majority of the visitors at our booth were looking for conferencing solutions that are flexible and scalable. The

hybrid workspace arrangement continues to be an increasing trend in the industry. So this will continue to be a key focus for us in terms of the changing market behaviour.

Have we become over obsessed with ease-ofNo, I don’t think so. It comes down to the evolving consumer behaviour which is more dynamic nowadays because technology is evolving and the understanding of technology from a layman’s point of view has also changed progressively. The accessibility of technology and information on the internet has expanded end users’ knowledge, which has actually elevated the standards for the industry. I think that ease of use is not something that has been overdeveloped, but something that has progressed naturally to a certain level in the industry today and end users are welcoming it as part

What are the main trends in the industry at the

I think getting up close and personal continues to be the key to understanding the dynamic customer’s demands. Events and performances are coming back and that shows a recovery of the market dynamics and economy around the region. It’s also an opportunity for us to reconnect with the

industry and show what we can actually offer in terms of our products and the value that we can provide to these different kinds of end users and how we can solve their problems, whether that’s in conferencing or in live events.

What aspects of Bangkok do you like the most?

In general, it’s a very friendly culture and geographically it’s quite centralised within the Southeast Asian region, which makes travelling and accessibility around the region easier.

What will be your focus on the booth this year?

We want to focus on our product solutions, in particular our Microflex ecosystem and the Stem ecosystem in the AV conferencing domain. And, on top of that, we also want to showcase our technology partnerships which continue to be a key factor as part of ease-ofuse solutions that we offer to end customers. With the increase in live events, this is also an opportunity for us to highlight our digital wireless solutions and how they can be used in challenging environments. As an example, Shure has been involved in the new Queen Sirikit National Convention Center where InfoComm is being held and more than 50 channels of QLX-D and ULX-D wireless products have been installed there.

Have we compromised AV quality to gain

The AV industry as a whole and Harman Professional networks to converged networks. Network speeds and bandwidth aren’t at the premium that they once were, and compression technologies have developed at pace. Technologies such as the MWC Motion wavelet Compression or JPEG used in our AMX video distribution products allow for visually lossless compression. The bigger challenge in moving from dedicated AV networks to converged networks is security. This is an area that Harman is investing heavily in as you will see from our recent product launches such as the N2600 which will be certified for JITC certification. With the wide range of products available today, customers can determine what is the required quality, based on their use case and requirements.
