The hybrid world is here to stay
WHAT A DIFFERENCE SIX MONTHS MAKE.
Since InfoComm SEA concluded its three-day stint at the BITEC, the exhibition has reemerged as InfoComm Asia within the Queen Sirikit National Convention Center (QSNCC).
As the professional audiovisual community continues to advance, it is hard to ignore the role around us that Covid-19 played in reshaping the world we live in. The classrooms, offices, hotels and public spaces of today have been repurposed to cater for the new norms of
remote lifestyles. Working alongside architects and interior designers, technology innovators have played their part in creating blueprints for hybrid classrooms, virtual healthcare and gyms, VR-powered enterprises, AR retail and holographic events.
For the sake of improved efficiencies and cost savings, remote and hybrid working practices are here to stay. As such, InfoComm Asia will continue to promote the technologies that enhance them. The new normal – and the hybrid
worlds we now live in – may have changed the way we live, work and interact, but the human touch takes precedent. Having been dazzled by 30,000-lumen laser projectors, captivated by immersive audio experiences, enlightened during engaging seminars and introduced to innovative new products, last year’s InfoComm SEA participants cited that their greatest takeaway was the in-person experience. Enjoy doing business at the show and the delights of this unique city!

AV on the network
AV NETWORKING HAS COME A LONG WAY AND IS moving into a mature, stable market. While there are still valid use cases for connector-specific applications like HDMI and XLR, many of the products revealed at ISE eschewed those legacy-style connectors in favour of only RJ-45 or USB-C. But while connecting devices to the network is increasingly approaching plug-and-play functionality, there’s still a lot of planning and consideration needed to run AV over the network successfully. Creating a converged network, with AV and corporate data running side-by-side, was the holy grail back in the day. IT teams often refused to add AV to the corporate network for fear of causing bottlenecks or disruptions. Now, we’re seeing a trend in that direction as AV devices evolve as good network stewards. There’s still a perfectly good use case for separate networks, especially if you’ve got a high level of AV traffic that needs to be managed, and it’s a significant part of your bandwidth.
One of the biggest challenges is the large number of manufacturers and myriad ways they implement networking. A classic fix for the interoperability challenge is the “walled garden” approach. The advantage is that the products work well together, but the disadvantage is that you’re limited to that one brand. If the manufacturer doesn’t have what you need or stops making something you like then you’re stuck, unless you buy new hardware to break out of the walls.
also leave the door open for enough interpretation to cause interoperability issues. An alternate case for interoperability is having a third-party develop a fully supported holistic transport solution. The advantage is
that if something goes wrong with the implementation, there’s a company that supports the platform, has a deep understanding of the technology and wants to help integrators and manufacturers alike.
The point of synchronising audio and video is to time-align what we hear with what we see. The human brain can withstand some mismatch watching people speak or play instruments, but only up to about 200ms before being impacted. Audio and video are often treated as separate streams because they have different processing requirements and are sent to different endpoints. But having separate streams and transport pathways greatly increases the chances of asynchronous AV delivery. An advantage built into Dante AV Ultra products is that they use the network PTP clock to keep the audio and video synchronised on the network, eliminating a large swath of issues. The primary advantage of a converged network is everything runs over the same cable, and you can use fewer software instances to manage the network. You plug in an endpoint and instantly have access to the needed AV resources in addition to getting to files and messaging systems.
Every network, converged or not, requires much planning to succeed. Designers need to draw out the system, note where the switches and the subnet boundaries are, and then consider how they’re going

to manage multicast inside the areas of the network using an AV-over-IP system, ensuring there’s enough bandwidth in the trunks (switch-to-switch connections) to prevent a choke point. In a typical bespoke design, the trunk connections are 10Gb or faster, while the downstream connections are 1Gb.
Furthermore, many enterprise-level networks deploy parts on separate subnets to increase security and improve quality of service (QoS). However, it’s almost impossible to maintain synchronisation across subnets. If engineering is on one subnet and the auditorium is on another, passing audio will be complicated at best. Tools like Dante Domain Manager overcome the subnet synchronisation limitation, allowing transmission of synchronised AV across subnets without needing to modify switches or add hardware. It allows Dante networks to use unicast to bridge between subnets and creates synchronised clock domains allowing for one large network. Still, the behaviour is confined to the devices that use AV traffic, so there’s no impact on the rest of the network.
Today’s endpoint connections are primarily 1Gb and, while audio streams are tiny by comparison and require no compression, video is an entirely different story. An uncompressed 4K60 stream with HDR is approximately 35Gb/s, so nearly all networked video is compressed in some fashion. Different applications use different compression codecs, each with pros and cons for implementation and transmission. For real-time applications like live events, manufacturers will use visually lossless codecs like JPEG 2000 to compress the stream and make it bandwidth-friendly for the 1Gb portions of the network, then decompress it at the
output endpoint for display. Dante AV Ultra uses JPEG 2000 for its encoding and decoding – which requires more processing power – but the output is visually flawless.
Streaming codecs like H.26x are often easier to implement and support much higher compression rates but at the risk of introducing visual artefacts. H.26x is great (good enough) for lots of applications since endusers are used to it, and it’s inexpensive to implement because it’s been adopted everywhere for mediumfidelity video. Many video products use that technology, but not because it’s the best for a network. It has much
efficient. Because of this, Audinate introduced Dante AV-H, software designed to run on systems-on-a-chip to give them access to Dante control and management. Converged networks are gaining popularity as AV devices behave more intrinsically like IT endpoints. But creating a converged network and managing it effectively are two separate issues. One of the biggest keys to the success of any large, converged network is how easy it is to manage, so take the time to choose wisely.

Kramer refreshes its identity
AV solutions manufacturer Kramer is investing, growing and developing its products and building new partnerships along the way
FOLLOWING THE ACQUISITION BY FORTISSIMO Capital Fund in early 2021, Kramer has undergone a rapid transformation. Enabling intuitive end-to-end audiovisual experiences and technology innovations, the company recently unveiled a refreshed visual identity and brand vision. Today, a rapidly evolving Kramer has emerged that urgently demands a revisit.
40 years of experience
Founded in 1981 to enter the video era with innovative products driven by the professional market, Kramer would gradually solidify its position as an industry leader over the ensuing four decades. Having committed to the development of creative, reliable and value-oriented audio/video signal management solutions, Kramer successfully built a global presence with over 25 offices worldwide. With the growth of digital multimedia and AV technologies, the brand continued to innovate through cloud technologies, AV-over-IP and breakthroughs in wireless presentations, which enabled the company to become a more innovative, fast-moving and forwardthinking market player.
A majority interest in the company was acquired by Fortissimo Capital Fund in early 2021, a well-known private equity and investor in technology companies with a unique hands-on approach. Keeping the brand relevant, this second generation of the business aims to make Kramer more relevant than ever through software,
cloud-based and IT-driven technologies. Recognising that “hybrid” is here to stay, Kramer anticipates that the demand for office working should decrease at the expense of greater demand for smaller WFH and huddle room applications.
A physi-digi world
The advent of this “physi-digi” world has created global demand for platforms that drive immersive productivity, collaboration and connection. Kramer’s vision is to meet this demand by creating technology to power engagement through the world’s most intuitive end-toend audiovisual experiences. By focusing on the alwayson collaborative needs of our new hybrid world, Kramer is pivoting to navigate the intersection of the physical and digital and support stronger end-user engagement than ever before.
Kramer has identified a number of audiovisual trends set to propel the company and wider industry in 2023; an accelerated convergence between AV and IT, the transition from product to experience in the buying journey and a value shift from hardware to software. As an industry leader, the company is not only reacting to these market trends and customer needs but also leading them.
Kramer’s most recent product developments to address these opportunities include an upgraded version of VIA, a wireless collaboration and
any PC or interactive display into a one-click meeting space, and quicklaunch EDU, a similar solution built for the education market. In addition, it is launching a new series of interoperable audiovisual signal management products and the KDS-100, an open-standard 4K60 AVoIP streaming solution. Plus, Kramer CONNECT will introduce an extended portfolio of premium USB-C products, and an inaugural range of services like space design, installation and technical certification is also being unveiled to support Kramer partners.
Strong leadership
In February 2021, Kramer’s CEO Gilad Yron announced the establishment of a regional model for the Americas, EMEA and APAC to get closer to customers and build a strong global partner network. The company also opened an R&D centre in Noida, India, in November 2022 to support its global expansion and strategic investment in new software products and solutions. “This is an instrumental element in building a scalable organisation that, as we shift our centre of gravity towards the customer and have senior executives in the regions where our customers are, will deepen our market intimacy and increase our responsiveness to customer needs,” explains Yron.

With almost 25 years of experience in the IT and communications industry, Marc Rémond now holds the role of Kramer APAC president after key positions at both Barco and Poly. The international business executive and entrepreneur possesses extensive knowledge in the AV and collaboration field and, given the latest portfolio of products to emerge from Kramer, Rémond’s expertise is playing a pivotal role as APAC channel partnerships are currently being forged.
Successful partnerships
While many brands strive to tie in customers, Kramer has an open ecosystem approach, meaning that all its
approach that is costly and less environmentally friendly. And as part of the company’s “open garden” approach to maximise value and flexibility for its customers, Kramer partners with leading innovators to accelerate the integration of advanced technologies in its products. To date, Jabra, Logitech, Netgear, Samsung, Sennheiser, Sony and Yealink have partnered with Kramer to provide complementary solutions with interoperability and a joint value proposition. Similarly, partner distributors have become an important part of Kramer’s new strategy. Rémond and his regional team are currently focused on creating a more efficient and scale go-to-market (GTM) model throughout the region. Focused on improving the competence and
training and servicing in addition to building sales networks of systems integrators, dealers, consultants, retailers and end users. A global partnership has also been agreed upon with Vega Global, whereby Kramer has granted the leading AV and IT communications business authorisation to design, install and support the entire Kramer solutions portfolio.
Powering real, human connections
Ultimately, Kramer’s new shoots appear to be growing exponentially with each additional manufacturer collaboration, distribution agreement and product development announced. Today, the company is investing,

Failsafe developments for Aetria
REINFORCING SYSTEM resiliency, broadening scope for KVM control in addition to offering secure mobile device control, Datapath has added several major developments to its Aetria solution.
Engineered specifically for critical 24/7 applications, the Aetria solution draws design, control and management of control room video within a single interface. To provide complete system resiliency, Aetria now supports automatic failover for the central network manager appliance. A secondary network manager is configured as a hot-standby, which is automatically invoked if the primary appliance fails.
Configuration, management and monitoring of both network manager appliances are performed in the centralised Aetria Command Center interface, where manual switchovers can also be invoked if required.
Furthermore, operations of the platform can be conducted from a phone, tablet or mobile device touchscreen. With Datapath’s secure user rights management applied, any pre-saved layout can be remotely loaded onto any connected videowall.
Aetria Workstation now supports direct monitoring and control of Arqa sources. Integration with Datapath’s Arqa AVoIP solution enables hardware-based access to multiple remote sources in Aetria. To enable this, an Arqa receiver is connected to a capture card in the workstation PC, after which Arqa sources are made available for viewing and KVM control from within the Aetria Workstation interface. KVM switching is performed automatically as the operator requests a specific source.

Powersoft launches cloud-based amplifier platform
UNICA IS Powersoft’s third-generation fixed-install amplifier platform. In Italian, UNICA means both Unique and Single, and this is what the manufacturer hopes the platform will bring to the audio industry: a unique and single new-generation amplifier series that is versatile enough to cover a wide range of applications, while at the same time delivering high-quality audio, reliability and efficiency. The platform has also been designed to deliver consistency across the entire family range of Powersoft amplifiers.
The UNICA range comprises three four-channel (UNICA 9K4, 12K4 and 16K4, with 9,000W, 12,000W and 16,000W respectively) and three eight-channel models (UNICA 2K8, 4K8 and 8K8, with 2,000W, 4,000W and 8,000W). In conjunction with Universo, Powersoft’s cloudbased platform, UNICA offers cloud-native connectivity and remote monitoring functions without the need for specific product registration or configuration. Cloud integration allows for the storing and sharing of projects online, keeping the amplifier’s firmware up to date, or simple integration in third-party systems through APIs.
UNICA’s power supply section has been designed to result in less power dispersed through wasted heat. The latest generation of single-stage power factor correction (PFC) and system-on-chip technology processing grant low power
Smart Rails Management (SRM) allows the supply rails to adapt in real time to the required output voltage to maximise efficiency and reduce idle losses. An Eco Mode reduces consumption when engaged, resulting in cooler racks and reductions in long-time running costs.
UNICA’s architecture allows high-quality amplification through newly designed input and output sections, reportedly boasting the highest signal-to-noise ratio on any Powersoft amplifier. Based on the latest system-on-a-chip technology, the DSP section is operable even when only PoE+ power is available, simplifying deployment and preconfiguration operations.
In addition, because each UNICA amplifier is able to automatically archive backups on a flash memory drive situated on the rear panel, users can easily replace a faulty unit with a new one in a matter of minutes, without any configuration or product knowledge. Networking is achieved through three Ethernet ports, allowing both AoIP and control
Sharing developed for the output section, with each output channel capable of delivering up to twice the power when loaded asymmetrically.

What is the focus at this year’s exhibition?
At PPDS, we make a difference to our customers globally by bringing total solutions – Philips professional display products facilitated by our Android SoC, our PPDS Wave remote display management ecosystem and by our amazing network of partners. Partnership is also very important for us at PPDS and exhibitions are a great place for us to make those connections. So, as well as showcasing our full line-up of displays, including the award-winning, zero power Philips Tableaux Advanced Colour ePaper – our theme is Open2 –Open technology that is Open to you. And visiting our stand, you will find that it is incredibly open and inviting – with us, there are no barriers.
Why should a visitor come to your booth?
Everyone is welcome on the Philips booth, where visitors will find our full product line-up displayed – LED, digital signage, ePaper, interactive, videowalls and professional TVs – as well as solutions that have been selected, specific to industries, to inspire and offer new opportunities. Retail,
Martijn van der Woude, PPDS Booth F01
corporate and control rooms. Education, hospitality and food and beverage (including our café and relaxing “outdoor” zone) are all included, and we are looking forward to having many open discussions about working together.
What has been the greatest breakthrough in audio, video or lighting over the past decade?
Breakthroughs are happening all the time and, as priorities change and technologies advance, new barriers are continually broken. As a part of the largest display manufacturer globally, we are in a strong position to bring new technologies to market at the right time for our customers. Across the whole industry, dvLED definitely continues to make changes to the products that make a difference in the professional display world, and we will all continue to see this advance, with finer pixel pitches and better price points.
For us, at the moment, though, our Philips Tableaux is a true game-changer – offering a full colour, sustainable substitute for paper posters and POS and digital displays
showing static content that doesn’t need to be refreshed regularly. It doesn’t use a single watt of power while showing an image, and only very minimal power is needed to change the content. So, with the whole world taking more care of the environment and with a keen eye on energy consumption, that is a big breakthrough, creating a whole new display category for a more sustainable future of our industry.
Favourite three letter anagram
I’m not a great fan of acronyms, but I guess RDM – Remote Display Management – is creating a buzz at PPDS at the moment as our PPDS Wave ecosystem continues to advance. Officially launched at ISE in Barcelona, Wave is bringing real business benefits both for our system integration partners and for end customers. The results of RDM speak for themselves … easy to integrate, manage, control and support display fleets, saving time, money and environmental impact. And visitors to the Philips booth can see and play with PPDS Wave for themselves in our dedicated zone.

What’s your focus at this year’s exhibition?
For this year’s InfoComm, we are focusing a lot more on the future of work. In the past few years, work has been at home. But now everybody is experiencing a hybrid setup –you can go back to office, or you can work at home. So, are we ready for that? How can we make it more immersive and how can audio – which has been very important in Covid times – be more immersive for everybody? How can we work better and improve on communications with all the different new technologies that are coming up. So, for InfoComm, we will be doing a lot more technology sharing and we will also be having panel discussions with some of the top people in the industry looking at what work will be like in the future and how systems integrators or leaders should blend the future of work.
What aspects of your business have changed since you last exhibited in 2019?
Everything has become more immersive. Audio is now more important for everybody. In the past, we have always been focused on video but when Covid hit we realised how important it is to get everybody heard properly when you’re streaming your voice. How can you hear everybody without having feedback? How can you make things work in terms of different workspaces when you’re not in the same room? Hearing is just as important now as seeing. We
have the BP3600 immersive capsule microphone that we developed for the Winter and Summer Games and Moto GP. We are also using it for movie projects which have asked for immersive audio. Audio-Technica has been doing a lot of work with trying to make things easier for engineers and content creators.
Why should a visitor come to your booth?
We will have some interesting panel discussions and live showcases of some new technologies. We’ll be showcasing Microsoft Teams room setups that could be ideal for your business or if you’re an integrator, we can showcase how this can be part of your integration.
Does the demo make the sale?
You want to see the product and feel it and make sure it fits in with your plan before you buy it. In Southeast Asia, lots of people like to try the product before they buy it because they need to be accountable for their decision.
What’s been the biggest breakthrough in audio in the last decade?
I think it’s networking such as Dante. We’ve been using XLR cables for a long time, but digitisation has been happening. Manufacturers are using RJ45 cables to transmit audio through Dante and that has been something that’s been
developing for audio and is likely to become the norm in the future but, as AV meets IT, a lot of people are trying to make everything even more seamless so you’re going to see a lot more products having just a Cat5 cable to connect everything through your system and Dante is doing that right now. We’ll be seeing more networking solutions and more AI being implemented. We need to be smarter – to make sure there’s no ChatGPT to replace us. In fact, we need to be the next ChatGPT – we need to anticipate what is going to happen, which is what all the smart DSPs and smart microphones are doing – anticipating whether there’s a voice or a noise – so we are moving forwards in ways that are far beyond what we could in the past. It’s going to be fun.
What your favourite Thai meal?
It’s fried basil with pork or chicken. It has a spiciness, but it’s savoury and very nice.
What aspects of Bangkok do you most enjoy?
The people are very friendly, they are nice and genuine, and they laugh and they smile – it’s the land of smiles! They are cheerful and you really feel it. They have such a lovely culture in the music and a lot of pride in the things that they do. We must learn from Bangkok and Thailand – their love for their culture, but they’re also embracing modernisation with all the skyscrapers.

What’s changed in the last six months since InfoComm SEA in November?
The pace of economic recovery has accelerated as more countries reopen their borders. This has led to an improvement in business sentiment and an increase in enquiries about our products. We are also seeing our partners and customers in the region resuming work on previously stalled projects or embarking on new ones. The reopening of China and Hong Kong is anticipated to create even more opportunities as we move away from the shadow of the Covid-19 pandemic.
What are your expectations now this has evolved into an Asia-focused show?
I would expect the show to attract more visitors and exhibitors from various parts of Asia, not just from Southeast Asia. This will enable businesses to gain access to a much bigger market that includes North Asia, South Asia and Indo-China, which further adds to the appeal of this regional pro AV event. The anticipated higher traffic will likely translate into higher sales and greater opportunities for AV manufacturers and systems integrators to develop a stronger presence in the Asia Pacific market. It is definitely a move in the right direction.
Jason Yeo, Christie Booth G04
Why does Bangkok work well as a hub for
Bangkok is strategically located in the heart of Southeast Asia with world-class facilities and a well-developed transportation infrastructure, making it easily accessible for attendees and exhibitors from around the region. The AV industry in Thailand is also rapidly growing, with more local companies emerging as prominent players in the market. This has led to an increase in demand for AV exhibitions and events in the region, making the Thai capital an attractive destination for such events. This will, in turn, enable companies to reach out to a more diverse set of customers and further expand their presence in Indo-China.
What’s the focus on your booth for this year’s show?
We are showcasing a range of our latest display and integrated solutions that open up a world of possibilities and inspire our customers to deliver unparalleled visual experiences. These
check out an updated version of our powerful yet versatile Pandoras Box Version 8 software licence that enables users to create anything they want, any time, with any hardware.
Why should a visitor come to your booth?
We have an expansive range of products and solutions that empower our customers to create brilliant, shared experiences and solve AV challenges, regardless of their requirements and budget. From projection and direct-view LED videowalls to content management, image processing and AV-over-IP solutions, our products are specifically tailored to enable customers to get the most out of their investment.
What trends and themes do you expect to dominate in the coming year?
As the global economy gradually recovers from the Covid-19 pandemic, business confidence is slowly being restored as China reopens its doors. And as China’s digital economy continues to gain momentum, Southeast Asia stands to reap the benefits with a resurgence in commodities, tourism and manufacturing. This promising trend bodes well for the recreation and entertainment sector, with an expected revival of projects in various markets, including theme parks, immersive environments, live events, and meetings, incentives, conferences and exhibitions (MICE).
Peter Er, Danacoid
Why does Bangkok work well as a hub for this exhibition?
I think that this will be a great show for the Southeast Asian market with Bangkok as the venue – it’s an exotic location with economical flights, food and hotels and it’s a favourite venue for Asian visitors.
What’s the focus on your booth for this year’s show?
For us, it will be a great opportunity to meet up with all our Southeast Asian partners rather than having to travel around on lots of short trips to meet up with our customers.
Why should a visitor come to your booth?
I think we are one of the fastest-growing Chinese
What are your expectations now this has evolved into an Asia-focused show?
Our presence in Asia is already well-established but
still we need to improve our brand awareness and this show is just the right platform for the region.
What trends and themes do you expect to dominate in the coming year?
For us, it will be international growth. We have already expanded into Singapore to have more of a presence on the international scene and we wouldn’t have done that unless we were performing well in our home territory. We are already selling our products to most Asians countries, as well as Europe, the Middle East and we have a sales office in the US.
What’s your favourite Thai meal?
