DAEWON SONG: 20 YEARS STRONGER

In 1988, Daewon Song began skateboarding on a cheap discount store complete. He spent a year honing his launch ramp skills and pinning pictures of pros on his bedroom wall. He had upgraded his board control and his board by the time he bumped into Rodney Mullen at a local spot the following year. The Mutt, who impressed Daewon not only with his blistering skills but also his Camaro muscle car, recognized a kindred spirit and put the teenager on World Industries. The two bonded over furious dedication and creativity that they channeled into their skateboards. Daewon turned pro in 1992 and slowly became one of the most respected technical street skaters of his generation. The following year, he scored a Big Brother cover (see catalog cover) and a rep for skating longer and harder than a Mtn. Dew fueled teenage skate rat. But five years into his pro career, a broken ankle and low-rider distractions pulled him away from skateboarding. It still appears to traumatize Daewon as he recounts how close he came to quitting skateboarding. “In ‘97, I broke my ankle and it took awhile to get back,” he says. “I bought a Makita cutter and started dropping cars. I loved dropping cars. I don’t know what happened. Skateboarding was everything and I got lazy and I wasn’t 100% and filming for video parts turned into a job. Rodney told me later that World Industries was considering kicking me off.” It wasn’t the thought of losing his skate paycheck that awakened Daewon—it was losing a friendship born in the skateboard trenches. “A lot of the riders left Plan B and Rodney was seriously bummed out. It almost killed the company and just seeing Rodney go through that pain made me realize that I have to support him. He had always supported me. That’s when I woke up. I said, ‘Rodney, I promise you that I’m going to skate more and we’re going get through this. I guess it’s just me and you.’” Two of the world’s most influential skaters also happen to be two of the most obsessive and they fed off each other’s buzz. In 1997, they openly mocked their non-competitive habit of feeding off of each other and started the iconic Rodney vs. Daewon series of videos. In 2003, they stopped screwing around and finally created a brand together. (That would be ALMOST … the company that made the catalog you’re reading right now.) But perhaps we have Daewon’s brief affliction of indifference to thank for his Energizer Bunny approach to skateboarding. Grateful to have skating in his life, he approaches each daily session with the same joy and energy as when he was skating his launch ramp outside his childhood home. “All I wanted to do was eat and skate,” Daewon says. “Skating gave me a weird sense of control. It was my thing—I was going to do it when I wanted, and how I wanted. Even today, the feeling I get when I learn something new is the equivalent that somebody else would feel if they win the lottery. Skating is such an outlet. Nobody can understand skateboarding until they are actually a skateboarder. You can’t explain it. I wouldn’t be able to get by without skating. It makes me a better person.”

Here’s a series of colorful characters. I like the contrast of pastel colors with the raw brown paper bag canvas. Nice touch.

We found Lucas from his amazing illustrations painted over top some of our advertisements in a variety of magazines. He’s been known to paint his interesting little posse over all sorts of skateboard and snowboard magazines. I think he’s from France.

This piece has a two headed character set on top of a cat that seams to be held up by someone. I would only assume this person would be the cats owner. Is the cat sad or tired? This is a statement piece where human, feline, and cartoon character all come together as one. Oh yeah, he has a knife.

It looks like the plant is wilting by the alien, and I wonder if he is causing this. Notice the magnificent sheen on the plant pot— if I was the TV watcher instead I would be watching the pot! The people shouldn’t be so alarmed. After all, the alien didn’t steal anything more than a Pepsi, and but maybe his slime has already stained the upholstery. Let’s start this off...ripping a slash (5-0) on a ramp is the best thing! I love skating street though because it’s always an adventure with the friends! Nothing beats a solid mission with a crew!!

Being that you’re from Lowell, MA... which has harsh winters and windy fall weather... what motivated you To skate through-out those conditions? Friends and learning new tricks!! We had a pavilion that we would go skate flat. It had a 4 crack in the ground that we would play games of skate over. So many good times with the homies, making something out of nothing! The real mission was getting someone with a truck to bring that flat bar or box out! People assume that we both are from Florida, are we? Haha... run us down memory lane The good ol’ south! Seven years spent running from the winters!! We basically are haha. Every November we would pack up the car with all of our skateboards and drive south. We would start the drive with sweatshirts and jackets on and as we drove south our articles of clothing would be slowly getting tossed to the side, along with the windows going down further from state to state... it was the best! What happened to you on that trip you decided to bring a portable bike? We went on an 18 day tour throughout 5 countries. I was getting into biking when I was too sore to skate. I loved that you could see more random streets than you would with a car. I decided to buy a bike that would fold into 15 inches and pack it for this trip... [Turned out the bike broke several times,] with the overall mark being $950 bucks spent on dead weight and the last day of the trip we were all drinking beer at the bar and this guy comes up to all of us and asked if one of us wants to buy his bike for $12 bucks. Everyone on the trip will never let me live this shit down! Rent a Bike! What’s the best thing about your backyard besides the cartoon drawing of me on your wall?! Haha you’re always just chilling in the backyard!... I have built myself a little oasis

Q: What is your favorite thing about riding for Blind?

A: Yeah, I had a part in the OUS Chegando Junto video and also one in Tropicalients’ NA BRASA video. Working on the OUS project was really important to me; I have always wanted to ride for that brand. When we were working on the video, I remember I was tripping out because I had to act like I was in a Hollywood movie: there were a bunch of cameras around, light guys, full script, etc. It was unlike anything I’d done before.

A: Skating for Blind has allowed me to accomplish my dreams as a skater. We have such a great team right now, and it’s just like one big family when we are together. It’s awesome!

Q: You’ve alway had really gnarly video parts, what motivates you to do all that crazy shit?!? A: Skateboarding. I love what I do and everytime I’m working on a new video I try to give it my all, and just try and make it look as good as I can.

A: Thank you. It felt great! I had never won a pro contest before so I was really stoked. Yeah, that skatepark is pretty much where I’ve grown up skating and watching dudes skate. I used to go watch the pro contests and now I’ve won one as well. I am very thankful; winning a contest in your hometown with all your friends and family there is amazing.

Q: Your new Medoobsa graphic is sick!! What do you think of all the new graphics coming from Blind lately?

Q: Blind is rumored to have a new video in the works for late 2015 called “UNLEARN”. What are your plans for filming on that?

A: I love it man! It put a big smile on my face. Sincerely, amazing series! Every new graphic I see is full of life and colors. That’s the way I like my boards to be when I’m skating...crazy and colorful graphics get me hyped.

A: Yes, we are working on a new video project. It’s been a busy year of skating for sure. I should also be getting my first pro model shoe from OUS and OUS is also making a video. So my plans are to skate, skate, skate...

Q: You took home 1st Place at the Drop Dead Skate Pro. Congratulations! How did that feel? It’s near where you grew up, correct?
