enjoi - A brief one sided history By Louie Barletta

In the late 90’s me, Jerry Hsu and Marc Johnson all shared a house together. We all rode for different companies, and all had different styles, but we all shared a common idea about skateboarding. Fun. One day Marc decided to start enjoi, and base the company around having fun. I think he wrote down on a piece of paper something like: enjoi spelled with an I instead of a Y. Why? Because an eye is better than a why. I was sold, so me and Jerry up and quit our sponsors and joined Marc over at enjoi. That was 14 years ago. The lineup back in those days was Marc, Rodney Mullen, Dave Mayhew, Jerry, me, Jose Rojo, Clark Hassler and Chris Dobstaff. Wow! A lot has changed over the years, but the one thing that has remained the same is the enjoi spirit. The vibe of just skating and having fun. This translates into all our ads,

our team, and our videos. Our latest video extravaganza is Oververt. Simply grab a beer and tilt your head back and gulp it down! Congrats you’ve just gone over vert or pad up and hit the full pipe, clock in at 9:05 and yes, you have just made it to over vert put those two words together though, and what you just made is the new enjoi video Oververt!!!! You will be pleased to know that it will be chalked full of familiar faces and antics you’ve come to enjoi and love, like Jose Rojo, Caswell Berry, Clark and myself. But we also have the likes of Cairo Foster, Wieger, Nestor Judkins and Jimmy Carlin(watch out for this one) but also this video is showcasing the

talents of the newest members of the team, Thaynan Costa and Blue Turner, along with the powerhouse duo of Zack Wallin and our boy from over the pond Ben Raemers. These kids are ripping hard and who knows, we may even have to award one of them with a pro model!?!?!? Stay tuned for that one! Last year I took over the brand. A funny thing there, we all took a vote on who should take over. 8 of the 9 voted for me, me being the only one who said MJ should come back. It is an exciting time at enjoi, with a breath of fresh air and new graphics. I can’t help but think enjoi is going back to the classic days of just a bunch of friends sitting on a curb talking about how they would run a company if they had one. We all talk about ad ideas and we all come up with the graphics. A great example of that is the Jose Rojo bmxican board. Clark came up with that one. And Jose came up with the video idea to back it up! It has been a slow process to get to be where we are now. But this catalog signifies the beginning of a new era for enjoi. The teams era! The era where we bring back the fun in our videos, graphics and skateboarding! Enjoy, er um enjoi!

STEP BY STEP

Oververt

Step 1. Acquire a beverage and place it in your right hand. Step 2. Take your left foot and cock it back behind you slightly. This will help with the balance. Step 3. Open beverage. Step 4. Take a deep breath and then start chugging. Step 5. Tilt your head all the way back. Step 6. As soon as the back of your head hits your shoulders (your drink should be at about 11 O-clock) arch your back. This is where step 1 is crucial. Step 7. As soon as your back is arched you should be at vert. Step 8. Now with your right wrist give your drink that little extra tilt. Step 9. You are now at oververt, hold it and down it! Step 10. Wipe off the excess foam and let the bragging begin! You just went OVERVERT!!!!

One day while I was picking my nose I came up with an idea. It was like an atomic bomb going off in my brain! ... fingers. And all the things you can do with them. Thom Lessner has 10 fingers. He used most of them to draw this series. My concept was simple. Imagine unimaginable imaginations, with famous people you would never imagine doing unimaginable hand gestures. Like hand in gloves, written words on papers, what are they worth? If a photo is worth a thousand words, imagine whats someone flipping you off is worth? Q&A with JAVIER MENDIZABAL When did you get into art ? I have been always drawing since I was a little kid... then I started to skate and started to look for videos to watch or magazines to see some other scenes. I believe I started to get influenced by Lance Mountain and Neil Blender doing their own graphics in the very beginning. Then they started this skate mag here in Spain called 360... and Fernando Elvira was the editor bringing a lot of art and cool music into the mag.... meeting him a few years later was a big big influence on me. We started to hang out everyday, he gave me my first photo camera, a Nikon Fm2... and introduced me to some other people doing different creative stuff... local artist or even Thomas Campbell or Coan Nichols.

How long have you been doing your grip art ? It started in 2007 when I had a studio in Barcelona with my friend Ivan... we used to spend a lot of time there fucking around with photos, paintings.. and some music too. It came really natural just setting up a new board and sticking the leftovers in the wall making some kind of a plant shape... Then, from being there and seeing it everyday, I realized there was some more different shapes to do.. so I started to play around until now.

No, I did some board graphics long time ago and a t-shirt design too... completely different from this ones! It was more than 10 years ago...

What size board do you ride? I normally ride a 8.25” board... and street as well.

Define Gypsy life… Wake up, try to figure out where the fuck you are and what happened last night... go for a walk to check what is around and find the WC while the others wake up. Breakfast... this is really freestyle... everyone has a different routines. I normally try to have my healthy moment here.. some others not. Then if it’s not raining we try to find skate spots and swimming spots too... the swimming spots are totally necessaries in this kind of life. If its raining its fucked up.. it means really long day.. so your mission is to find activities to make it shorter until next day or the sun comes back. And then, before it gets dark you have to find a sleeping spot... this is pretty funny, because by this time people have been drinking for awhile and we end up sleeping in places where you will never thought you would sleep.

When did you start on this Last Supper art and what was the whole concept around it ? The Bastard Store from Italy emailed me last year about doing another collab for them. I couldn’t think of anything for the longest time until I saw Jon Horner’s “Where’s Penny?” poster from Sidewalk Magazine. It was like Where’s Waldo, but with all the iconic skaters and characters from the 90s. After seeing that I got the idea.

Was the Leonardo da Vinci connection to Milan the reason you collaborated with the Bastard store ? Yeah, The original Last Supper by Leonardo da Vinci is in Milan, so it totally worked to do it as a collab with Bastard since they’re based in Milan.

Which character was the hardest to draw ? The Devil was kind of hard to get right. At first I had him facing more straight on and holding the baby from the original Natas board down and cutting its head off. But that ended up taking up too much space. So then I thought it would be cool to have him in the same position as Judas was on the original painting, but that didn’t work out either. Also, the color separations took a long time, since even on the heat transfer graphic all of the colors are spot colors with the same kind of transparent overlays that are used in the old silk screening process.

What do you miss about that early 90’s era?
