A Brief Introduction to 1decision What is

1decision is an interactive platform which provides student-focused safeguarding tools, embedded into a full Personal, Social, Health, and Economic (PSHE) programme for primary schools. In line with Department of Education guidance, the programme has been designed to assist schools in meeting requirements set within the curriculum, safeguarding and PSHE. Reassuringly, our programme is one of the first to receive the PSHE Association Quality Assured Kite Mark. The passion behind 1decision Hayley Sherwood, founder of 1decision, explains why she created the programme: www.1decision.co.uk What inspired you to create the 1decision programme? Millions of pounds are spent each year training adults to recognise safeguarding concerns amongst children. My own childhood experiences and countless life stories of others prove that this is still not enough. Society also shows us that personal, social, health, and economic education still needs to improve. Social issues such as violence, drugs, crime and obesity continue to dominate the world around us. For many years I worked within the secondary sector managing highly successful mentoring and prevention programmes. It was here that I came to realise that earlier intervention is vital in order to make a bigger impact on society. Society is fixated on finding the cure for our problems because we can see results; when a situation appears to be solved. We must stop searching for the cure, prevention is the key. It is essential that we give young children the confidence to speak out together with the knowledge and the skills that they need to make safe and positive choices throughout their lives. For the last four years I have studied and worked together with leading consultants, organisations, and schools to develop the most advanced resources for the subject of PSHE together with student-focused safeguarding tools for primary schools. What makes 1decision so different from other programmes? Statistics show that at least 65% of children born in the last century are predominantly visual learners (Visual Teaching Alliance, 2014) because of their significant exposure to technology. Therefore, it is essential that education provides a curriculum suited to their needs. 1decision is suited to all learning styles and has been designed to offer a unique learning experience, providing interactive videos, games and educational songs. Together with activity workbooks and teaching manuals, 1decision stands out above the rest.

David was extremely fragile, having been seriously bullied over a prolonged period. Why was he bullied? Partly that he was quiet, a bit chubby, not sporty, and liked to do academic work. Fear and worry about being constantly beaten and verbally abused made him ill. He dropped out of school and spent all of his time in his room, often with the wardrobe pushed across the door. Luckily, David found help through Northleigh House, an organisation funded in part by the Ben Cohen StandUp Foundation. David is now recovered and his exam results assured him a place at a local college, where he now studies full-time. The Ben Cohen StandUp Foundation raises awareness of the long-term negative effects of bullying and provides support to those organisations doing work on the front line to stop it.
