Global Learning for a Global Future

Introduction Welcome to Gateway and our association of leading schools in the United Kingdom. Our organisation was formed with the goal of extending to students from around the globe, the opportunity to further their studies and enhance their academic development. Our carefully selected association members prize both academic achievement and personal growth. They are focused on enabling global citizens who will not only play a full and active role within the school but also in life after graduation. Our role at Gateway is to provide support and nurture to the successfully selected students, by acting as guardian and guide, companion and carer. We pride ourselves on our partnership between pupil, parent and school. We understand both for child and parents how difficult life can be when separated by long distance and time zones, so we work without cease to support both of you. When a parent places their child within the care of the Gateway group they can be assured of our constant attention and consideration. As a father myself I know how much I wish for my own children, and it is our privilege and honour to help each and every family that comes to Gateway to help them realise their aspirations, and to take care of every student from the moment they set foot in the country to that very last moment when they leave - proud of their achievements and noted for their success. We very much look forward to being at your service in the near future.

Academic UK With schools in our association dating back more than 600 years there is no shortage of experience in dealing with the learning needs of generations of students. It is indeed the strengths of individual schools that contribute to the strength of the education system in the UK, from prep schools to sixth form, from early years education to the achievement of the A level gold standard. Our independent schools are committed to success for each and every one of their student body and as such, will make high demands on the academic strengths and personal achievements of their students. Once a student puts on the uniform of the school, they become an ambassador of that school and its values. Those expectations mean that a student will need to make a serious and meaningful choice both in terms of their school and their own expectations. Schools will expect potential students to undergo entry tests and interviews to assure themselves that the students are the right fit for their institution. Once a student is accepted by the school and has embarked upon their study path, the school will want the student to play a full and active part in the life of the school. Not only will the school need to see success in the classroom but also in the debating society, on the sports field or in the music room. Schools need to see achievement, enthusiasm and dedication.

6

Schools will involve each student in their “house” system, which means that within the broader school there are smaller groups of students who are organised under a housemaster or housemistress. The “houses” are the building blocks of a school, and form the basis of all competition, cohesion and compassion. As the student passes through their school life, every progress step will be monitored by the school and Gateway and fed back to the parents. This regular reporting forms the keystone of measuring a student’s development. The reports will be based on observation of the student in formal and informal assessment, attitude and approach and how much time a student invests in independent study. Parents can be assured that the discipline and dedication of school life will lead ultimately to a successful outcome and that students are guided towards the next important step in their academic career - university, and here again, the school and Gateway are here to help.

Accommodation The association of Gateway schools offers the discerning parent a choice of accommodation for their child during their academic studies in the UK. Traditionally the only option for international pupils studying at an independent school was boarding. This model is still as popular today as it was 100 years ago, and is for many students the most appropriate choice - one with which Gateway is happy to help parents. Alternatively and uniquely, Gateway works with a wide variety of day schools. This means that students join a school which has no boarding facilities and consequently a much lower number of international students. Students are placed with our network of carefully selected local host families, many of whom have children studying at the same school. There are advantages to both choices and we are happy to discuss them with parents so that they can make the best choice for their child. During the holidays Gateway provides alternative accommodation options for students if they cannot stay at school. Our network of caring hosts provide a home from home to all the students in our care.

8

Guardianship Gateway will be the student’s appointed and trusted guardian while they are studying in the UK. We are proud of the level of service we offer to our parents, students and schools - a level of service that covers the student from the moment of arrival to the last sad, moment when they leave us. The Gateway Service Promise covers all aspect of a student’s stay including: •

Advice and assistance on school selection

Meet and Greet services on arrival

Assistance with all travel arrangements throughout their studies

Support with visa applications and extensions

Representing the students’ academic interests

Attending all parents evenings

Regular feedback to parents on both academic progress and pastoral matters

Registration with police, the health service, banks and other official bodies

School visits to meet with the student at least once every two weeks

Own-language Guardians who mentor and support the student

Helping the student manage their finances

24-hour emergency response team

Gateway offers its Guardianship either as part of the package when choosing a Gateway association school or as an additional service to parents who have selected another educational institution.

It was founded in 1344, but has occupied its current home since 1890. “Our School has a strong reputation for pastoral care, and aims to nurture individuals’ self-esteem in a positive, mutually supportive and happy community. All pupils receive extensive guidance over higher education and careers. The education is grounded in positive traditional values, whilst also being dynamic and forward-looking. Teachers are all well qualified, dedicated and enthusiastic. Lying in the gentle folds of the beautiful Somerset countryside, the School occupies an impressive manor house as it has done for the last fifty years. These surroundings provide the setting for some very modern developments. Chilton enjoys a well-deserved reputation as a welcoming, friendly and unpretentious school. Class sizes are deliberately small and children, staff and parents really get to know each other. There is a strong sense of community, creating a warm and enabling atmosphere. Located in the beautiful city of Hereford, which is set in rich English countryside, the school is a thriving and successful co-educational institution for pupils aged 3 to 18. The School is located at the heart of the city, situated in and around the Cathedral Close and medieval cloisters. Though the school has an ancient academic tradition, it is not oldfashioned. It has wonderful brand new facilities including state-of-the-art science laboratories and sports hall. A unique energy and spirit prevails where expectations are high and pupils excel. Small class sizes, specialist teaching staff and strong pastoral care ensure that academic standards and examination results are excellent. The majority of sixth form students go on to study at Russell Group Universities, with some 8% going on to either Oxford or Cambridge.

How to book Gateway services can be booked directly with us or you may choose to use the services of one of our highly trusted overseas representatives. Long Term Students Each one of our associate schools operates their own admissions criteria. Admission to a chosen school will normally consist of a English and maths test, plus a review of previous academic history from the students current school. If the student has taken an IELTS test recently then that score will also be taken into account. Associate schools also like to interview candidates to find out more about them - so it is important that applicants are ready to talk about not only their academic achievements but what they have done outside of the classroom. Having a full extra-curricular experience - in sports, arts or music - can make all the difference to whether an application is successful or not. Gateway and our representatives will guide you through the application process and help you at every point. We will also be there to advise on visa applications and transferring to the UK to study. Contact our representative or ourselves to talk through the options available, and remember - our role is to be there for you. Summer Centre Students Working with our partners overseas, please feel free to contact them and enquire about the most up-to-date summer courses, programmes and locations - we are always working on new destinations and programmes so check what are our latest options.
